One of the goals for this magazine is to provide you with information and resources to help you connect with others in your faith community by learning more about our ministries and church family.

Many of us are curious about other cultures and have a desire to share our faith with people outside of our own community. In our feature article, We’re on a Mission: Changing Our World & Ourselves, staff member Sarah Putman shares the story of how her first mission trip to Romania changed her life. We hope this will inspire you to explore whether you are called to share your gifts through joining a mission team or maybe helping others take that leap.

On October 15th, we welcomed Pastor Kate Smith to our staff as our Pastor of Youth and Young Adult Ministry. Kate is originally from Dayton, Ohio and attended Wright State University earning a B.S. in Organizational Leadership with a minor in Communication and Urban Affairs. We sat down with her so that we could share part of her story with you.

Q. When did you first realize you wanted to work in ministry?

A. At the age of 14, I went on my very first mission trip to Tijuana, Mexico to serve at an orphanage. I had just started going to church and this was one of my first opportunities to learn about Jesus. Not only did I experience the love and grace of Jesus, I was able to witness followers of Jesus living out their faith. I was hooked; I was eager to learn more about what it means to be a Christian, study the Bible, and serve in my local community. At the age of 17, returning for my 4th trip to Tijuana, Mexico, my youth director called out gifts to ministry.

She explained that she saw passion and excitement while engaged in ministry and encouraged me to explore ministry as vocation.

Q. What are you most looking forward to in your new role at HPC?

A. I’m most excited about journeying with young people through this stage of their life. Being able to witness people explore and grow in their faith and having “aha moments” through conversations and questions, living out our faith through action and service, and getting out in the community and the world is a privilege.

Q. Is there something people might be surprised to learn about you?

A. My grandparents were very involved in raising me and they were avid sailors. We spent weekends in the summer on their sailboat in Lake Erie. This past May, I took a sailing class in order to (re)learn how to sail and had a blast meeting new people, being outdoors and on the water, and learning a new skill (only 1% of the population knows how to sail).

Q. What is your favorite thing to do on your day off?

A. Something adventurous and new! Since 2014, I have been working to complete 30 goals that I set for myself to complete by the end of this year. While I won’t hit all 30 goals, it has been an adventure of traveling, learning new things, cooking, reading, going to concerts/ musicals/shows – just to name a few.

Q. Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

A. Ironically, my youth directors have had the greatest impact on my life and a big reason why I am in ministry today. My first youth director instilled in me the love of service, my second encouraged me to always take on the posture of being a disciple of Jesus, and the third empowered me to take on leadership and encouraged me to explore a call into ministry.

Q. What is the best book you’ve read?

A. One of my favorite books is Tina Fey’s Bossypants. I flew through reading it the first time and have listened to her reading the audiobook twice. Her humor makes me laugh until I cry!

Who loves me?

God loves me!

God made me and wants to be my friend forever! These are the three simple truths our preschool students are learning each year in Chapel during the school year. It brings us great joy as a ministry to share the love of Jesus through singing, dancing, interactive Bible stories and prayer time with all of our precious preschoolers.

We are thrilled that Dana Calhoun, our Director of Children’s Ministry, is partnering with us to lead Chapel for the preschool students twice a month.

“It is the greatest feeling in the world to look at the children’s faces light up as I teach them about the wonder of God!” says Dana about her time in Chapel.

We PRAISE God. We SING songs.

We learn BIBLE stories. We PRAY together!

The children look forward to learning about biblical characters and truths through Dana’s hands-on lessons. The classroom teachers play an integral role as they continue the learning in the classroom environment.

Preschool families are encouraged to worship with us during their child’s chapel experience.

CREATING A

CHURCH CULTURE Due to the many changes that OTRCC has undergone in the last 5 years, it has been crucial to begin developing a church culture that is made up and owned by the people who call OTRCC their home. Culture has the power to foster relationship, motivate mission and create a sense of stability. Over the last year we’ve seen this culture begin to materialize in various ways.

For example, on July 16 we launched the second round of our church catechism.

Catechism is a four part process for people interested in joining the church or learning more about the community to learn the context of our congregation as well as tools to help in participation. Each part consists of 3 hours after worship where we eat a meal together and then dive into a curriculum around the history of our context, both geographical and ecclesiological; power dynamics around class, economics and race; and how we are seeking to build a genuine and meaningful community within these realities.

We held round 1 through the months October-December of last year where we had a total of nine individuals participate. Round 2 just finished the fourth and final Part in October with a total of 15. It is truly encouraging to see not only the number of people within the church community growing, but also the level of dedication and excitement around investing in this church body in truly meaningful ways.

Additionally, on October 4-7 a group of 12 of us traveled to Detroit, MI for the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) Annual Conference. Our time in Detroit provided a wonderful opportunity for us to learn from other churches and organizations around the country engaged in similar work as our own. Through daily plenaries and breakout workshops, we joined with thousands of other people in educating ourselves around topics like social enterprise, multi-cultural/anti-racism best practices, urban farming, strategic partnerships, urban church-planting, and many others.

On top of being practically beneficial, our time in Detroit was a remarkable bonding experience, where dedicated members of our church were able to gather together across age, race, class, gender and educational background, and work together to further discern where God is leading us in the next 1-3 years.

One major outcome from the conference will be our upcoming 3 year strategic planning session. We’ll invite 14 members of the church into three separate conversations from November through January to discuss where we have come, the current state of our congregation, and where we believe God is moving.

Changing Our World & Ourselves Being a Christian comes with the responsibility and the privilege of sharing faith and community with our neighbors.

Just as we reach out to our brethren across the city with our partner churches in Price Hill and OTR, our global outreach program is a part of that privilege. Here at HPCUMC the Volunteer in Mission (VIM) team is a group of volunteers who aid the congregation in carrying out the church’s mission of outreach in terms of ministering to the poor, developing Christian leaders, creating and revitalizing congregations, and improving global health through medical interventions.

Senior Pastor Doug Johns believes “Short Term Mission Trip opportunities are intentional ways of developing relationships with people beyond our norm, engaging in a culture unlike ours yet just as rich and valuable. Thus, immersed in the lives of others we honor and value the individual we are in relationship with and their culture, while and at the same time meeting the actual needs that others tell us they have.”

HPCUMC has Christ-centered, life changing mission experiences in Samara, Russia and Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti in the coming months. Both of these areas have many challenges that make Christian living and worship difficult.

They need our help to understand how to be a community, with leadership within the church, and how to persevere in the face of adversity. Many also are living in poor housing conditions, without enough food or medicine to sustain them physically.

Our contribution to these communities is invaluable. “Our brothers and sisters in Christ yearn for relationships with other Christians who are willing and able to walk alongside them as mentors, developing leaders and offering Discipleship Pathways, growing deeper in their relationship with God, one another, and the community they serve.”

The basis for mission work lies in the scripture. Romans 12:4-5 exclaims, “For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

We are one in Christ and he calls us to this ministry. The VIM team asks only that volunteers have a passion to serve, a willingness to share your faith and time, flexibility to help in

a variety of ways, and the ability to ask the church and others for support (emotional and financial). The only skills required are an openness and appreciation of cultural differences, people, food, and a basic level of fitness that will allow you to walk long distances and climb stairs. There are regulations we must follow such as immunization records, passports, and team meetings, but these are but details in the larger picture of service to God and to the church. There is some cost to the volunteer, but financial assistance and support are available.

Many of our missionaries have expressed how the experiences they’ve had in working with other cultures, meeting people of faith, helping to grow communities in worship and Christ’s love, and ministering to the sick and the poor has transformed them. The people are generous and eager to have fellowship with Christians and help in becoming leaders within their communities.

Jeff and Mary Sheldon, missionaries to Samara in the summer of 2016, are excited for their next trip to Samara in the coming months. “Our mission trip was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. The trip was more of a spiritual experience than we could have imagined. Russian people “love big” and we witnessed the spirit of the Lord every day.”

Mission work offers us new ways to accomplish the ministry of Jesus Christ. It offers a spiritual journey that broadens perspective, and a new way to experience Christ’s love by experiencing genuine faith. Now’s the time for an experience that will challenge and change you. Something that will show you what it means to serve and love others—a kick start into the life God has called you.

The life you change, may be your own Falling in Love with Romania: A Journey, Sarah Putman Growing up, I was the kid who didn’t want to be away from home for long periods of time. I didn’t go to camp or on trips with friends. In fact the only traveling I did was with my grandparents. Family was safe, and so being at home with my family was where I wanted to be. The college I attended was 10 minutes away from my family and I still had some significant adjustment issues. Suffice it to say, I was a quintessential “homebody.”

God changed all of that. During Cedarville University’s mission-focused week, my junior year of college, a woman came to speak. At the end of her talk, she passed out commitment cards to each student and invited everyone to sign the card if we “were willing to tell God we would go wherever He called.” That moment was a pinnacle game changer in my life. I knew the Spirit was moving. In obedience to the calling I felt from God, I signed the card and left chapel expecting to be called to the middle of nowhere where I would forever be hot, hungry, lonely, and miserable (not my finest moment, I will admit). God did nothing with that commitment for four years.

In my second year of teaching at Miami Valley Christian Academy I had the opportunity to teach a Discipleship class.

In January of 2009, I was cleaning dishes and reflecting on the Discipleship class when I felt the Spirit tell me to call Shawn (my teaching partner). Without hesitation, I called and committed myself to the next mission trip to Romania. I know that my commitment to trusting in God’s will and signing that commitment card during chapel 4 years earlier had set in motion the journey that led me to Romania. God knew my heart and knew it would take 4 years for me to be ready to leave the comfort and safety of home.

During preparation for the trip, I admitted to my fellow missionaries that the miserable trifecta for me was being hot, hungry, and tired. My expectation was that during this month in Romania I would feel all of those things, as well as profound homesickness. Expecting this to be a once in a lifetime trip (spoiler alert – God had other plans), I decided to suck it up and trust in God’s plan for me.

While I did experience some homesickness, as well as periods of being hot, hungry, or tired (not usually all three), the profound experiences of the trip forever altered my future. I lost my heart and soul to Alex, a small 3 year old Roma boy with Down Syndrome. Alex was unable to walk, crawl, or communicate. We were inseparable during that first trip and I went back to Romania the next summer specifically to see him.

I had numerous friends in addition to Alex and spending the summer in Romania became a tradition. I returned in 2011 and 2012.

In 2013, I was disheartened to find out that our team would not be going to Romania in the summer. I worked hard to make peace with this fact. It was about this time that I felt the Spirit move in my life again. When each of my sisters, on separate occasions, told me, “You have to go, even by yourself,

because you are never more alive than when you are talking about Romania.” With faith in my Romanian friends and in God’s plan for me, I went without a team that year and watched as Alex learned to walk at 7 years old.

During the course of 2013 – 2015, I spoke and prayed with my missionary friends about the dream God had been growing in my heart. Romania needed more mental health counseling and it was my calling to fulfill that need. The men, women, and children that we served surely could use mental health counseling, however there would not be a full time opportunity for me, as counseling was contradictory to their cultural values.

My friends and family kept praying that the answer would present itself. So, I began my counseling program at Xavier in the fall of 2015.

Around the same time, Barb Fillion, a member of Hyde Park Community UMC and networking queen of all things, noticed that a Facebook friend from Reynoldsburg UMC in Columbus was set to take a trip to Cluj, Romania in February 2016, and needed volunteers. She shared the post to my wall with the message: “Thought this might be of interest to you since your heart is in Romania. Maybe you could go with them.”

Through some affirming blessings, and an attitude of “might as well network,” I committed to the trip. I went to a city I barely knew, to work with a group of people I had never met.

Our first night there, Pastor Rares, of the church in Cluj, said out of nowhere, “It is my dream to start a counseling center in conjunction with the church here.” This was it. God was leading me to Cluj.

In the year and a half since that profoundly important moment, I have continued to build my knowledge of the culture, my love for the people, and my joy in following God’s plan. American friends from HPCUMC went to Cluj in March 2016, and decided to partner with the church for a minimum of 5 years. I don’t know the details of where this journey will ultimately lead me, but I’ve made plans to move to Cluj in the winter of 2019. It is amazing to me that I, a self-proclaimed homebody, am excited to move 5,000 miles away from my family. It will be heart wrenching to leave my home, but my excitement serves as my proof that God changes hearts. If He had told me I would be moving to Romania during that commitment chapel in college, I would still be hiding under a rock. But rather, at each turn in this journey, God showed me the next step and prepared me for the one that would follow.

He is good. He is faithful. And His plans are greater than ours.

WE’RE ON A MISSION: Changing Our World & Ourselves

Be Still:

Imagine Several years ago, Pastor Doug preached a Christmas Eve sermon I will never forget. We all know the Christmas story, so what was so remarkable about this sermon? Pastor Doug began by having us think back to a time when a new mother asked us if we would like to hold her newborn baby. How did we feel? Were we anxious? Were we afraid we might “break” this little human? Were we delighted? As Pastor Doug continued, he had us imagine what it would have been like those many years ago in a small town called Bethlehem.

A young man and his pregnant wife were looking for a place to stay but the only place available was a stable. So, surrounded by animals, they made their bed in the straw.

That night, it came time for the young woman to give birth and a healthy baby boy was born. We all know this young couple to be Mary and Joseph and the baby boy to be Jesus.

Through our imagination, Pastor Doug had us right there in the stable experiencing this miraculous birth. And then he had us imagine Mary saying to us, “Would you like to hold my baby?” WOW! Would I like to hold the Savior of the World? Would I like to hold the one who came to set me free, who came that I might have life abundant, who came to show me how to live? What would I say to Mary? Would I be anxious and afraid? Would I feel unworthy? Would I gently take the baby in my arms and look at him in awe? In writing about this experience, I am brought to tears once more, for in my imagination I was holding the Savior of the World and he looked at me and smiled at me and took delight in my presence!

Imagination! God can use our imagination in powerful ways. Inigo Lopez, otherwise known as Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), found that to be true. Inigo grew up in Northern Spain, the youngest son of a noble family.

He had military training and was somewhat “a man about town” until his leg was shattered in a battle between France and Spain. He spent months recovering from his injury.

Daydreaming and reading occupied his mind during this time. Though he would have much preferred romantic novels or an adventure story, the only books available were one on the life of Christ and another on the lives of the saints. Inigo found that when he daydreamed about the ladies and winning great battles he would be left feeling more disgruntled than ever. But when he imagined being more like the saints who gave their all for a worthy cause, he felt alive and energized. For Inigo, this was the beginning of discernment. He also discovered another way of exercising his imagination. He began to imagine himself in the stories, scenes, conversations in the Gospels and he began to participate in these stories. This participation in the Gospel stories became a powerful means of deepening his personal relationship with God.

She is a retired pediatrician with a masters degree in theology from United Theological Seminary. She is a trained spiritual director and supervisor, a trained labyrinth facilitator, and a retreat leader.

The use of imagination is an important part of Ignatian spirituality. This is what Pastor Doug had us do in his Christmas-eve sermon. And it is something we can do individually or with a group to make the stories in the scriptures come alive and to deepen our relationship with God. During this period of Advent, I invite you to read the birth narratives in Matthew 1:18-2:12 and Luke 2:1-20 and to place yourself in the story.

1. Spend a moment to quiet your mind and your heart by focusing on your breath. Taking several deep breaths and noticing the flow of air into your nostrils, down into your lungs, and out again helps you to be centered in the moment. Ask God to be present in your hearing of the Gospel story and to open you to God’s truth.

2. Choose one of the narratives.

• If you are doing this prayer exercise individually, be sure you read the story slowly, pausing where appropriate.

When you pause, notice where your imagination takes you. Read the passage several times. You may want to read it out loud.

• If you are in a group, have several people read the passage out loud. Again, read it slowly and pause where appropriate.

3. As you are reading the story or as you are hearing the story being read, place yourself in the scene.

• Who are you in the story? One of the main characters?

An on-looker? Maybe one of the animals?

• What are you seeing? Smelling? Feeling? Tasting?

Hearing?

• Do you enter into conversation with anyone? If so, what is the conversation about?

• Dwell there in the story and see what God may be revealing to you.

4. End your time with silence and a prayer of thanksgiving for how God has been made known to you through the power of your imagination.

Our imagination is a powerful, God-given part of who we are. It can be used to our detriment, bringing sadness and hardship, or it can be used to our benefit, bringing joy and life. Just ask Inigo! As you journey through this Advent season expectantly waiting for the birth of the babe who changes everything, may you be filled with hope and joy and peace. And may you use your imagination to deepen your experience of and relationship with God.

Mark 10:45 Why serve? As Christians we are called to

serve others. Jesus called each one of us to be a disciple. What does this really mean? The definition of disciple is to be a follower of Christ. Believing is only the start. As a true follower of Jesus Christ it is important to not only learn about the gospel and Jesus’s teachings, but to emulate our great teacher through action.

Through our many partners in the local community and the world our church continues to strive to make a difference, no matter how big or small. We want to share with you some of the many blessings our own community has had from serving others: Rothenberg’s Missional Impact on the Mission Workers Working with Rothenberg students is like exercise for the spirit. Sometimes you don’t want to go and other times you’re anxious to get there and get going! Sometimes you’re thrilled and excited and other times you’re disappointed. But always, you know it’s a good thing, making a little impact on the “health” and “quality of life” of both you and our greater community.

Having mentored a student from second through sixth grade and, last year, a sixth grader, I am humbled by the experience.

I have grown by being exposed to a different world of values, culture and learning development, which has broadened my understanding of how poverty influences academic achievement and how intervention can have a significant impact. – John Fillion Tutoring is both challenging and rewarding. The learning goes both ways. – Karen Webster Every time you enter the doors at Rothenberg Academy you are heading into an opportunity to enrich the students’ lives.

But more importantly you receive a gift. You will feel better every time from the tutoring experience through helping the students succeed. You might feel tired or stressed when heading into tutoring but I guarantee afterwards you will feel better from the hour spent at Rothenberg.

The church staff leads by example by getting out of our offices and serving as a team three to four times a year. Sarah Putman, our Community and Global Outreach Coordinator, reaches out to different ministry partners creating these opportunities. In service, we have tied blankets, prepared testing treat bags, cleaned and reorganized at MEAC, prepared meals for the residents at the Center for Respite Care, and prepared soup for our Lenten conversations.

On September 20th, the staff went outside the walls of HPCUMC to work with the Jubilee Project. Rev. Thomas Hargis began his appointment, as a new church start minister at Project Jubliee, with the vision to have a church where the neighborhood comes together to meet the needs of the people in the neighborhood.

system and picked up trash from the lot, while workers hung the chain link fence. Currently there are four lots in the neighborhood that will grow different types of fresh produce to then be sold at the market so that the neighborhood might benefit from affordable fruits and veggies. The staff is blessed that they could be a part of transforming people’s lives by helping build an orchard in a neighborhood in need of hope.

THANKSGIVING BASKETS

This year over 550 Thanksgiving baskets were packed and delivered by our church family.

In a word, it is humbling. Blessed are those that have means to give, but Thanksgiving woe falls on those who have little.
