Happy New Year!

We have had a wonderful time celebrating the Advent of Jesus Christ, reflecting on and singing the Songs of Advent and Christmas.

As we have proclaimed the songs of Hannah, Zechariah & Elizabeth, Mary & Joseph, the Angels, and Anna & Simeon in worship, we have heard one constant theme echoing through the generations: God’s plan of salvation is for all people, especially the most vulnerable.

God’s salvation turns things right-side up, heals wounds, and straightens up what has been messed up. God’s salvation is hope made real through healing actions in the world.

As we move into this new year, we hear God calling us, personally and as a church, to be a part of God’s healing and saving work of making all things new.

God invites us into the healing of creation, the healing of relationships, the healing of the institutions that help us navigate as a community. We have the opportunity to turn things right side-up, to help heal wounds, and to straighten up what has been messed up. God is with us as we do so, bringing about the salvation that heals hearts, lives, and communities, through unconditional love and grace.

As Hyde Park Community UMC, we seek to embody the hope and love of Jesus Christ through service, worship, and companionship. In each of these components we find opportunities to continue singing the songs of God’s salvation for all people, especially the most vulnerable. What a blessing and opportunity!

In this new year, we’re looking forward with expectation for all of the ways we will join with God in singing this hope filled song of salvation and healing the world with you HPCUMC! Blessings, Pastors Suzanne, Todd, & Kate

Sermon Series | Reset and Resist January 7 - January 28 Our sermon series in January focuses on The United Methodist Church’s Social Principles and Baptismal vows that we share as a community of faith. As we begin the New Year, we remember our work with The Solution Consulting Co and our strategic plan as we reset and resist. We reset by allowing ourselves grace for a new start. We resist by continuing to enter into discomfort and hard conversations for growth. Through the study of Philippians and Matthew, we will reset and resist together as a community striving for peace, justice, and equity for all people.

Lent Sermon Series| Tattered and Mended February 18 - March 24 Bishop Desmond Tutu believes there is nothing that cannot be forgiven, and there is no one undeserving of forgiveness. There have been times when each of us has needed to forgive and also times when each of us has needed to be forgiven. And there will be many times again.

With each act of forgiveness, whether small or great, we move toward wholeness. The quality of human life on our planet is nothing more than the sum total of our daily interactions with each other and the Divine.

Each time we help, and each time we harm, we have a dramatic impact on our world. Forgiveness is the way we mend tears in the social fabric and stop our human community from unraveling.

The path of forgiveness is not any easy one. On this path, we must walk through the muddy shoals of hatred and anger and make our way through grief and loss to find acceptance that is the hallmark of forgiveness. This Lenten season, we will move through Bishop Desmond Tutu’s Fourfold Path of Forgiving. We invite you to join us on this healing, transformational journey as forgiveness is nothing less than the way we heal and bring peace to ourselves and our world.

The 2024 Altar Flower Calendar is Open You are invited to donate flowers for Sunday morning worship to honor loved ones and special celebrations in your life such as birthdays, anniversaries, and other occasions. You can also donate flowers in memory of loved ones. For the Sunday morning that you choose, a notation will be included in the bulletin.

The altar flower donation is $50. You can pay online thru Realm or by mailing/ dropping off a check to the Church. Please note altar flowers in the comment section of your check so that we know where to apply your donation.

If you would like to share your gifts with your church family through providing flowers, please review the available slots in the Sign-up Genius link and use the QR code to sign up: You may also contact Amanda Kern in the church office. She will secure the date for you and provide helpful details.

We will order the flowers from Amelia Florist. The Flowers are then delivered to the church on the Saturday prior to the Sunday you choose. You are welcome to take the flowers home with you at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday morning, following the 11:00 a.m. worship service.

Let’s Get Real | Parlor Let’s Get Real is made up of people between the ages of 30-45, including parents of young children (infant-middle school aged). This group is discussion-based and focuses on the hard questions of our faith and why we believe what we believe in a safe, inclusive, and honest environment.

Join Meredith Menius, Director of Connecting and Discipleship Ministries, as we start a new class, Current Events and Faith, at 11:00am in the Parlor for the 2023-2024 year (September-May)!

This class is focused on current events and topics, including but not limited to, gun violence, inclusivity of LGBTQIA+ persons, current legislation in our state and country, and other social justice concerns we face as Christians. We will use books, videos, podcasts, and other forms of educational resources to lead this discussion-based class.

Tuesday Morning 10:00 a.m. in the Refectory The Book Your Church Doesn't Want You To Read, Tim Leedom The Editor and authors who have spent years of study, research and investigation share in a general point of view - the view that the religious beliefs held by many people in the United States and other countries, are totally unfounded. The foundation of the book is the spirit of free inquiry, from the ancient Greeks - Pythagoras, Socrates and others. This book is an enquiry into crucial issues of today. These issues need examination, for we are now all villagers in the global electronic village of the world, of which social commentator Marshall Mcluhan spoke of 30 years ago. This is not an anti-religious book. The search for the meaning of life started long before Moses and, Jesus, Mohammed or organized religion. This book is a reference guide that is meant to be challenging and informative.

During the pandemic a lot changed for many of us. Life slowed down and the pain in the world became glaring. Often in these moments, the body desires to jump into action, into care and support. However, the steps of care can feel daunting or we feel we have a lack of tools to be a source of support and care. If this describes you in any way, I think becoming a Stephen Minister might be the next right step for you.

Stephen Ministers are lay congregation members trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life such as grief, divorce, job loss, loss of a loved one, chronic or terminal illness or relocation. Stephen Ministers come from all walks of life and they all share a passion for bringing Christ’s posture of love and care to people during a time of need. Sometimes taking the first step looks like learning and providing support for one person at a time.

HPCUMC is partnering with The Episcopal Church of the Reedemer in training new Stephen Ministers for both communities. The training sessions will start at the end of January. We welcome those who are joining the Servant Leadership Board in 2024. They submitted an application to our Nominating Committee and were recommended and affirmed at this year’s Charge Conference on November 13, 2023. New members include Stuart Burton, Roxanne Hamilton, Peggy Schmitt, and Rod Cober. We are grateful for their willingness to serve.

Paul Bolster and Jason Abbott also joined the SLB mid-year, filling vacant positions, and will continue to serve as SLB members in 2024.

Jeff Sheldon will serve as the SLB chair for the 2024 term.

Strong lay leadership is critical to having a healthy and thriving church.

Those in lay leadership bring skills, ideas, and energy from their various backgrounds, increase communication and connection within the congregation, and help the church to stay focused on mission and strategic priorities.

We want to offer a special word of thanks to those who will be completing their term on our Servant Leadership Board at the end of 2023. David Harpring and John Fillion have both served with excellence as SLB chairs and members of the property and finance teams. We appreciate their faithfulness in leading, especially during the years of Covid-19 and pastoral transition. Donald Morehead has also served faithfully as the representative for The Warehouse.

The Servant Leadership Board (SLB) is the lay leadership board of Hyde Park Community UMC. The SLB is made up of 12-15 lay members along with the pastors and the key program ministry directors that make up the Equipping team of the church.

Lay members of the SLB serve for a 3-year term and are a part of one of three teams that make up the SLB: Personnel, Property, and Finance. The term year begins in January.

Kaitlin Curtice Recap

Reflection of the Lecture with Kaitlin Curtice

by Sarah Knapton In 2020 the book Native by Kaitlin B. Curtice came out. I distinctly remember pre-ordering Native and awaiting its arrival. Her book came and it was introspective, heavy, and eye opening. Throughout Native I heard the yearn in Curtice’s voice, I heard her journey of reclaiming, loving, and cherishing her relationship with self, mother earth, and her heritage. It was a mere blink into the realities of Indigenous people, that I had 25 years of privileged ignorance.

Jump to 2023, Curtice came to HPCUMC on her book tour for her new book, Living Resistance. During the morning lecture, she spent time discussing the importance of interfaith relationships. She presented the image of a tethered line between each one of our hearts to one another as well as to the earth and our ancestors. Potawatomi culture believes in the Seven Generations, meaning that they believe that the things we do today will affect those seven generations after us. And in the same way, seven generations before us, our ancestors, believed the same thing when they were journeying this earth. It is a beautiful connection of value in people before and after one’s life. But when looking back at my own ancestor’s lives, I see silent grief, undiagnosed mental health and

poverty seeped in white privilege. I see gendered boundaries in careers, homes, churches, and family dynamics. There is harm to my bloodline, and there is harm done to others from my bloodline. Curtice says in Native, “Decolonization, doesn’t mean we go back to the beginning, but it means we fix what is broken now, for future generations.” Decolonization helps ask questions about systems, mindsets, and spaces we grew up in that were colonizing in hope for something better for all. In the end we are all connected to something bigger than ourselves.

Reflection of the Workshop with Kaitlin Curtice

by Eric Riggs A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend a workshop at our church that author Kaitlin Curtice created. I was enamored at the chance to attend such a workshop and had the distinct pleasure of attending with my two older children.

In my current spiritual journey, I am embracing diverse topics and working to strip away toxic thoughts and practices. Kaitlin’s book, Native was a great help to me in decolonizing my faith. As a member of the Potawatomi Nation, Kaitlin has wrestled with what it means to share in a faith that has its roots in a colonizing European tradition while embracing her indigenous heritage.

The topic of the workshop was holding space, and exercises were broken out into holding space for yourself, for Mother Earth and for others. The prompts were evenly split between journaling/reflecting and group discussions. Each prompt was thought provoking and engaged my kids and me at many levels and provided rich discussion.

My biggest takeaway from the experience was gaining an understanding of how self-reflection and introspection can be a form of worship. Holding space for thoughts, conversations, and awe can all be sacred and nourishing.

I would encourage you to seek out some of the authors that our church has highlighted, featured, or promoted as many of these authors have wide ranging perspectives that may enhance your faith. Consider attending a lecture, workshop or group, and be open to words or insights that might differ from your own. Engage in conversations, work alongside our members and attendees and broaden your worldview and empathy.

To participate in the march, we will gather outside the Freedom Center (50 E Freedom Way - meet at the corner of Rosa Parks St. and Freedom Way - look for the United Methodists Against Racism banner) by 10:15am for an interdenominational prayer service which begins the solemn and spirit-filled re-enactment of the civil rights era marches for equality, dignity, and justice. The march (about a mile) concludes at Washington Park with an additional prayer service. The complimentary Rosa Parks Bus provides rides for those who cannot walk the mile uphill in the cold.

You can either walk back to the Freedom Center or you can take the (free) Connector.

You are also invited to attend the commemorative program in Music Hall starting at 12:00pm featuring the award-winning MLK Chorale, guest performers, and inspirational speakers. Did you know that up to 71 people can show radical hospitality to Found House families during each host week? There are also multiple opportunities to provide support and care behind the scenes by providing food for the week. In 2024, we will be hosting up to 4 families 5 weeks throughout the year.

Through our partnership with Found House we are working to ensure families are able to stay together having access to temporary shelter and connect families to the housing they deserve. We invite you to consider being part of the host team by signing up to provide donations for meals and supplies and/or be onsite with the families in the evenings.

riday Fellowship First Friday Fellowship is back starting Friday February 2, 2024!

A new group has started!

Sunday Connect Group This group is made up of people who have college-aged children and older who are interested in discussing current events and growing in their faith through books and guest speakers, as well as participating in service projects together to build community. The group meets the first Sunday of the month until May at 5:30pm in the home of David and Jill Colaw.

We will have Jennifer Wessel from Life Enriching Communities, Confident Living and Nina Creech from Whole Home. They will be coming to bring insight for downsizing, decluttering, and safety measures for aging in place. Downsizing has been a common denominator among many and we wanted to get some experts in to talk with, empower and promote quality of life no matter what next steps are in your future.

As always a delicious meal from Jeff Sheldon will be presented and enjoyed. Fellowship starts at 11am, lunch at 12pm in the Welcome Center followed by a program at 1:00pm in the Welcome Center. RSVP $10.00 per person by Tuesday, January 30, 2024, to Peggy Schmitt.

Lisa is very happy to have found her church home with the curious, courageous and connected members of HPCUMC. She enjoys the First Friday Fellowship and the many opportunities to serve the community. She is thrilled that her three granddaughters are excited and happy to come to Sunday School. Volunteering with Super Serve Saturday at Meals on Wheels in October was a rewarding experience for the whole family. Lisa retired last year after 24 years in social services working with impoverished families and advocating for abused and neglected children in court. She is looking forward to where the Spirit will lead on this new journey.

This series honors Emerson and Jane Colaw who served at HPCUMC from 1961 to 1980 at which time he was elected Bishop and served the Minnesota Annual Conference for 8 years. After serving as Bishop he spent a number of years at United Theological Seminary where he taught Homiletics and Church Administration and served as interim President. Dr. Colaw’s legacy at both HPCUMC and United Seminary are remembered by scholarships that support the ongoing ministry that he nurtured. If you have been impacted

by Dr. Colaw’s ministry and would like to contribute to the continuing legacy of his ministry there are two opportunities.

Gifts can be made to HPCUMC for the “Colaw Lecture Series”. These gifts would allow HPCUMC to continue to bring outstanding speakers to our community.

A gift can also be made to the “Colaw Scholarship”. The children of Dr. and Mrs. Colaw have seeded a scholarship at United Theological Seminary to support young students entering ministry. Students from a United Methodist background can apply for a scholarship from the earnings from this scholarship.The initial investment will remain in perpetuity.

Gifts to either of these funds can be made through the Church office with a note in the memo line as to the designation.

You are invited to the annual Found House Faith in Action

Breakfast on Thursday, February 15th starting at 8:30 AM. The event will include a panel discussion on the role faith communities play in securing housing for all. Found House IHN’s mission is to provide shelter, housing, and support to families experiencing housing insecurity and to strengthen those services through interfaith and community partnerships.

Start your week off enjoying your favorite beverage and meaningful conversation with other young adults. On Mondays starting January 8th through February 12th, meet at the downstairs large community table of Beans and Barley (Madison Rd.) from 7:00p-8:30p to discuss an episode from The Faith and Work Podcast. Each week stands on its own - come when you can.

The Faith and Work Podcast explores our everyday work in God’s world.

Through conversations with organizational leaders, frontline workers, and scholars across industries, we will tackle common workplace challenges, broaden our vision for how God is at work in our communities, and offer tools to deepen our experience of God on the job.

The Young Adult Ministry doesn't shy away from doing and talking about hard things and getting vulnerable. This Young Adult Lent Study will parallel the sermon series exploring the path of forgiveness. On Mondays starting February 19 through March 25 from 7:00p-8:30p at Bean and Barley, start your week off enjoying your favorite beverage and meaningful conversation with other young adults. This study will guide us on a healing, transformational journey as forgiveness is nothing less than the way we heal and bring peace to ourselves and our world.

Serve along side our partners, build relationships, help those in need & do good work…

Serve alongside our partners Tijuana Christian Mission (TCM), a children’s home with campuses in Tijuana and Rosarito and Women with Purpose, a women’s shelter in Rosarito (next door to TCM’s campus).

This trip is for middle school students (going with their parents/guardians/grandparents), high schoolers, young adults, and adults who have a heart for serving children, teenagers, and women. What we do with TCM and the women’s shelter will depend on the gifts of the team that forms (like capital improvement projects at the children’s home) but will definitely focus on building relationships with the children, teens, and women.

Intergenerational Global Partner Visit Tijuana Christian Mission and Women with Purpose

Mexico | July 6-11, 2024

“People should consider going to TCM because the experience is truly inspiring. The staff and kids are amazing and the environment is new and different, which will help you grow and learn more about different cultures and about yourself. It’s safe and a great way to help others who need it and who do good work.

This past visit was special to me because it was an opportunity not only to revisit (from 2019) an amazing place, but I got to go on my own and build relationships by myself and really stretched myself by putting myself out there, which I’m not used to do too much.”

More than 2,000 years ago, Jesus fasted in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights according to the Gospels.

Today, many of our neighbors are at risk of hunger and fasting is not a choice. During Lent (February and March), you are invited to support our community partners Madisonville Education and Assistance Center and State Ave. UMC’s food pantries by taking, filling, and returning a Project 5000 food bag. The orange bags with shopping lists attached can be picked up and dropped off in the Social Hall (attached to the Welcome Center) starting in February through the end of March as a way to honor the season of Lent and Easter. This would be a great way for families (especially with children) to shop and serve together!

Another way you can support our partners and neighbors is by writing a check payable to HPCUMC with “Project 5000” on the memo line for the food (each bag cost approximately $25 to fill) or you can give online by scanning the QR code.
