We are doing a 5-part Book Discussion on Brené Brown’s book “The Gifts of Imperfection” at Keystone restaurant in Hyde Park in September and October on Mondays from 7:00-8:30pm.

Sociologist, researcher, Ted Talk storyteller Brené has spent the past two decades studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy.

In her first New York Times best-selling book, “The Gifts of Imperfection”, Brené’s “ten guideposts” are benchmarks for authenticity that can help anyone establish a practice for a life of honest beauty—a perfectly imperfect life. Now more than ever, we all need to cultivate feelings of self-worth, as well as acceptance and love for ourselves. A new way forward means we can’t hold on too tightly to our own self-defeating thoughts or the displaced pain in our world.

Instead, we can embrace the imperfection.

The discussion will be framed in such a way that even if you haven’t had a chance to read the material, you will be able to participate in a meaningful way. Also, even if you haven’t joined us for previous chapters, anyone new is welcome to jump in where we are.

Fall Reading List Grateful: The Transformative Power of Giving Thanks

by Diana Butler Bass Research has shown that a regular practice of gratitude decreases stress, anxiety, and depression; improves relationships, sleep, productivity; and, increases resilience. Q. How have you been involved in the life of the church?

A. Attending worship every week @ 9:30. Past and present involvement: Staff Parish, Lay Leadership Development, Hospitality, New Member Leadership, Welcome Desk Greeter, Connect Group, Thanksgiving basket assembly & drop off, Stephen Minister & Stephen Leader.

Q. How has God impacted your life?

A. I grew up in the UCC church, became Presbyterian at one time and settled at HPCUMC after being in an abusive marriage for 19 years.

Through the grace of God, Pastor Suzanne Fontaine and my Stephen Minister walked with me through an attempted suicide, PTSD and a full recovery. I am grateful every day for God’s love and guidance.

Q. What is your favorite thing about being a member of HPCUMC? A. The sense of family, hospitality, possibilities to learn and grow in God’s love, community involvement, loving and excepting EVERYONE are just a few ways HPCUMC means the world to me.

Q. How long have you been a member of HPCUMC? 4. I think I joined in 2001 or 2002, about 18 years.

1. When did you first feel called into ministry?

Sadell: When I was about 5 years old, I began to sing in the children’s and youth choir. At 11 I was in an itinerant Gospel group that traveled throughout the Philadelphia region and to other states. I continued to lead in various contexts throughout my youth through adulthood. I’ve served on the Staff of two other churches and planted out New Life Covenant Cincinnati with Sherman. Every appointment I’ve had has had elements of ministry, whether or not they were in ostensibly Christian organizations.

Sherman: I was at a small baptist church in OTR on the corner of Finley and Elm Street, formerly named New Prospect Baptist Church. I was active working on behalf of the social issues plaguing the OTR community in the late 90’s a few years before the 2001 uprising.

2. Explain how you came up with the name The Warehouse.

We sat down with Sadell and Sherman Bradley to learn more about them and their vision for The Warehouse. Their energy and excitement about ministry is contagious.

Sadell: The name The Warehouse was a Holy Spirit download. A warehouse is a large building where raw materials or manufactured goods may be stored before their export for distribution.

According to Scripture, God is our Manufacturer, the Maker of Heaven and earth. (Psalm 95:6; 121:2) He has created and formed us in His image and after His likeness. (Gen. 1:26) We are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for the good works He’s prepared for us. (Ephesians 2:10). The Warehouse will be a place where we will gather as our raw selves and be be shaped by the Word of God, in the presence of God, along with a loving community. We will be equipped and deployed for the LORD’s Kingdom purposes, with leaders going in and out spreading the Gospel in places where it has not been. (Romans 15:20) The Warehouse is a multi-ethnic, inter-generational, multi-class community that will thrive in the heart of OTR, but have impact beyond the walls of 1310 Race Street and even beyond Cincinnati.

Multi-Ethnic - Martin Luther King, Jr. said that it’s appalling that 11am on Sunday morning is the

most segregated hour in America. That was in 1960 and 59 years later, 86.3% of US churches are still monoethnic. This is the deepest divide in our Country, City and unfortunately in the Church and does not reflect the teaching of Jesus. We believe that UNITY in the Body is the prayer that Jesus prayed for (John 17:20-23). In Heaven worshippers from every tribe, language, people and nation whom Jesus has purchased with His precious blood.will gather before the throne. (Rev. 7:9; 5:9) Inter-Generational - The US church also separates by generation, particularly with music (traditional and contemporary) and experiences. Scripture expresses the value that is present in all generations: the strength of the young and the wisdom of the old. (Prov. 20:29) It declares that, “One generation will commend your mighty works to another; they will tell of Your mighty acts.” (Psalm 145:4) Multi-Class - The work of Jesus and His Apostles did much to close the class and status gaps of the day: ethnic and racial, class and gender. These are still prevalent in our society. The Word humbles and challenges those in positions of power, and dignifies the weak and disenfranchised. There is neither Jew nor Greek, bond nor free, male nor female, but ye are all one in Christ Jesus. (Gal. 3:28) We are blessed when we consider the poor. (Psalm 41:1-3) Those that are rich in this world have a responsibility to share and do good works.

Lundon (34) and our two grandchildren Robert, Jr. (7) and Rylan, who was born on July 5th. Shaniqua (31) who lives in the UK (Newburry, Berkshire), and Whitney (29), who lives in Denver, CO with our grandson Jaxon (9).

That’s a synopsis of The Warehouse. We believe that God will add to the church daily those who are being saved, (Acts 2:47) and we solicit your prayers for more laborers for this ripe harvest. (Matthew 9:37-8)

Sherman: Both my parents. My father for his constant reinforcement of a positive mental attitude. My mother for her faith in Jesus Christ but most fondly is my grandmother who assisted me during the time of my parents divorce. She kept me for periods of time and nurtured me and loved me unconditionally at a time when I wondered about my parents love for me.

3. What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

Sadell: I’m most looking forward to having a space to create an atmosphere of worship where the presence of God is tangibly felt, where healing, miracles, signs and wonders can take place and the anointing of Jesus in Isaiah 61:1-3, and Luke 4:18-19 can be experienced by all.

4. Tell us about your family Children? Grandchildren?

Sadell: We have a blended family of 3 children Robert (36) who is adopted after his emancipation from foster care into our family and now lives with with his wife

5. Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

Sadell: Outside of Jesus, I’d have to say my mother. She adopted me as a toddler and ensured not only that I was sheltered, fed, and clothed, but that I received an excellent education, was well loved and most important, came to know Jesus Christ as my LORD and Savior.

6. Is there something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Sadell: I am very introverted and I love solitude and quiet. I attended Friends Central School, a Quaker School in Merion, PA from first through twelfth grade.

Sherman: Well most people are surprised by my age and that I am a grandfather of now 3 children (Jaxon 9, RJ 8, Rylan 6 weeks) . I have been on 8 cruises in 17 years.

What’s the simplest thing you never learned to do? Sneeze quietly. After years of trying unsuccessfully to quiet my sneezes or relearn the art of the sneeze, I’ve resigned myself to accepting that some people just sneeze louder than others.

What are we most likely to find in your refrigerator? Iced tea, goat cheese, and Pine nuts.

Written by Christine McHenry Christine has been a member of HPCUMC for over 35 years. She is a retired pediatrician with a masters degree in theology from United Theological Seminary. She is a trained spiritual director and supervisor, a trained labyrinth facilitator, and a retreat leader.

Beholding

With the change of seasons, especially from winter to spring and from summer to fall, I become more aware of the trees that inhabit my environment. There are the coniferous trees, the ever stately evergreens and the deciduous trees which lose their leaves in due season. In the spring, I wait for the baby green to appear that heralds waking-up and new life. In the fall, I am in awe of the brilliant colors that signify the beginning of a time of rest.

I have been reading a fascinating book by Peter Wohlleben entitled “The Hidden Life of Trees.” Did you know that trees in a forest live in communities and families and support the young and the weak? Did you know that they communicate with one another by means of olfactory, visual, and electrical signals. Did you know that trees develop friendships with other trees and other living organisms? And did you know that trees register pain when a predator attacks? WOW! Several years ago, I was on a retreat during the early fall in southern Indiana.

During our opening session we talked about contemplation - what does it look like? smell like? feel like? sound like? even taste like? We were then asked to go onto the retreat grounds and find a tree to contemplate. (Contemplation is most often defined as taking “a long, loving look at the real.” This is not just a quick judgmental glance but a long look - and, indeed, smell, feel, taste, listen - without preconceived notions or judgments. We take this long, loving look at what is before us so that we might see and hear and feel and smell and taste the Real or the Sacred within the real.) I remember going out onto the retreat grounds looking around at the various trees from very young saplings to mature trees. There was this one tree close to the drive into the center that caught my eye. It was a mature tree with a number of scars. Some limbs had been broken off probably by the wind. Others had been sawed off because they interfered with the driveway. As I stood there gazing at this tree, I was all of a sudden filled with sadness and overwhelmed by the pain this tree had experienced because of nature and because of humankind. It made me reflect on how it is that the chances of our natural world wound us and how it is that we wound one another and for what reasons. I felt the bark of the tree which was rough and had patches of lichen and smelled the leaves and listened to the leaves stirring in the breeze, but I have to say I did not taste the tree! Trees, according to the research sited by Peter Wohleben, communicate with one another and God certainly communicated with me through this tree.

The practice below comes from a book by Fr. Richard Rohr entitled “Just This: Prompts and Practices for Contemplation.” Contemplation or beholding is a different way of seeing, one in which you notice, savor and appreciate, and then respond. I invite you during this season of change and throughout the year to take time to shift your seeing to beholding and to experience the Sacred not just in the extraordinary but also in the ordinary.

2019- 2020 Beholding Have you ever noticed how many of the apparitions in the Bible begin with “behold - an unusual word hardly ever used in common conversation? It is usually uttered as a command, and invitation, or perhaps a call to a different style of attention. In a sense, it is a giveaway that, in fact, you can and need to “switch gears”once in a while to be ready to perceive what is about to come at you.

Concert series

When I have sent people into the woods on retreat, I tell them to draw a symbolic line in the sand somehow and truly expect things on the other side to be special, invitational, or even a kind of manifestation. It always works. On the other side of that log, or lawn, or “line in the sand,” they start beholding. Someone who is truly beholding is, first of all, silenced with the utter gratuity of a thing, a tree, a bird, even an insect. You find yourself giving it voice, allowing it to have an inherent dignity, and you let it give you a leap of joy in the heart and in the eye.

What has happened is that you have begun to meet reality subject to subject instead of subject to object, I and Thou instead of just I and it. Once you can change your actual expectations, the resonance between you as seer and what you can see will also change. To behold is to allow and to taste the awe and wonder. …

Once you decide to behold, you are present to what is, without the crutch of your preferences or the false ledger of judging things as important or not important.

Nothing needs to bother you and nothing is insignificant. A much broader, much deeper, and much wider field of perception opens up, becoming an alternative way of knowing and enjoying. The soul sees soul everywhere else too; “deep call unto deep,” as the Psalmist says (42:7); center knows center, and this is called “love.”

Beholding happens when you stop trying to “hold” and allow yourself to “be held” by the other. You are completely enchanted by something outside and beyond yourself. Maybe we should speak of “behelding” because, in that moment, you are being held more than really holding, explaining, or understanding anything by yourself. You feel yourself being addressed more than you addressing something else. This radically changes your situation and perspective. … walk into some new areas today and “behold” some things! You will seldom be disappointed. Look at a tree, for example, until you see it in its “absolute truth” as one instance of the eternal self-emptying of God into creation. When you behold the tree in this way, you move beyond its mere “relative truth” as either a beech or an elm, big or small, useful or useless, healthy or dying, yours or not yours, hardwood or soft wood, etc. You are allowing the tree to reveal its inherent dignity, as it is, without your interference or your labels. It becomes an epiphany and the walls of your world begin to expand.

“A HUGE ‘O SNAP’ TO THE SUMMER IMPACT LEADERSHIP TEAM.” –ADULT LEADER

The next time you are at church, be sure to check out some of the impact the groups left behind this summer as you take the stairs down to the refectory.

Each week, one of the first experiences each group had was worship focused on the revelation and response of how God loves and calls each of us. Each person was given a vinyl and CD with four colors (white, yellow, blue, red) for paint pouring and ALL of them turned out so beautifully and different than all the others. They took the vinyl home but left the CD, and in doing so, shared their hope and prayer for Cincinnati during closing worship on the last evening.

This art installation serves as a tangible reminder of how we are all a one of a kind creation of God and how our call and journey with Jesus is also unique.
