Dear Friends,

I

n my role at Hobart and William Smith, I have the good fortune to know a number of students who have had impressive careers at the Colleges, excelling in academics and athletics, and committed to civic engagement and global perspectives. My colleagues in Alumni House report that in 14 years at HWS, I have handed diplomas to about 5,600 Hobart and William Smith graduates who are now working in every possible field around the world as architects, doctors, teachers, lawyers, Peace Corps volunteers and business leaders, among others. Many of these former students return to campus to visit during Reunion or to assist current students with career advice. Others, when making an Annual Fund gift or volunteering for Admissions, pick up the phone or send an e-mail to let us know how they are doing. And in traveling across the country, I often have wonderful discussions with these young men and women at HWS events and – you’d be surprised how often – at airports.

The future of Hobart and William Smith relies heavily on the philanthropy of alums and parents, our ability to attract and retain exceptional students, our capacity to offer competitive financial aid packages, our agility in evolving an innovative curriculum, and the degree to which we can create a stimulating environment for teaching, learning and collaboration.

So in this issue of the magazine, we profile some of the faculty, staff and coaches who are devoting their lives to students. These are just a few of the many people who inspire, teach and mentor our students, providing them with the counsel and instruction necessary to explore the world and prepare for lives of consequence.

I always ask each one the same question: how well prepared do you feel? Without exception, the responses are an affirmation of the liberal arts education we are offering at Hobart and William Smith, one that no matter the major or career trajectory emphasizes critical thinking and effective communication, quantitative reasoning and scientific inquiry, artistic expression and global understanding, and social justice and ethical judgment. In my conversations with these alumni and alumnae, I am reminded of their great promise as well as the grave responsibility we have to them and to future generations to ensure that the Colleges are positioned for success.

As part of the article “HWS at Work,” (page 16) my office as well as the offices of Professor of Sociology Jack Harris, Associate Professor of Education Mary Kelly and Professor of Dance Cynthia Williams were photographed to provide a glimpse of colleagues at work. As you will observe, the creativity, successful careers and commitment to students is evident in the three faculty members’ offices. In my office, the Pulteney Street Survey editor asked students in the course I co-taught last semester to reflect on an item for this magazine. I was delighted to see that their selections also have great meaning to me: the drawing of my family by my then seven-year old daughter Kathleen or the letter from Sargent Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps, congratulating me on legislation that was approved. The article “HWS at Work” is a testament to the talent and commitment of our faculty and staff. Each day they work hard to maximize the student experience and the articles in this magazine provide an interesting window into the lives of some of our valued colleagues.

he Office of the President is located on the second floor of Coxe Hall, just above a classroom and down the hall from the balcony of the Bartlett Theatre. Overlooking the Quad and Medbery Residence Hall, the background noise is most often the lively conversations of students talking about exams or playing Ultimate Frisbee. Against this backdrop, Gearan meets with faculty, staff, community members and, every day, students. We asked some of the students in the course “Elections and Campaigns,” which Gearan coteaches with Professor of Political Science Iva Dutchman, to select their favorite objects from his office.

But in my time getting to know President Gearan, I’ve learned about his impressive leadership background working in the White House and his time as director of the Peace Corps. Once you know him, you learn how humble and personable he is. We have very different political views and that makes for interesting conversations.”

Campaigns & Elections: Rules, Reality, Strategy, Choice by John Sides, Daron Shaw, Matt Grossmann and Keena Lipsitz “So much of the “Elections and Campaigns” course was about the people who called in, like CNN Chief National Correspondent John King and Republican Strategist Mary Matalin.

So, for example, we read a chapter of this book on the presidential campaign of Michael Dukakis and the next day, Dukakis called in to class and we were able to ask him questions directly. That was pretty amazing.”

MANRING WINS NATIONAL POETRY PRIZE Assistant Professor of English Caroline Manring won the prestigious 2012 National Poetry Review Book Contest for her collection of poems “Manual for Extinction,” a work that illuminates the complicated links between humans and nature. Manring’s manuscript will be published by The National Poetry Review Press, the printing division of the California-based literary organization.

Facilitated by the student-led group Project Nur, an opening reception for the Muslim Student Center, the newest space at the Colleges for prayer and community engagement, was held on Feb. 15. The center is open to all and designated as a space for meaningful dialogue among faiths.

DOPPLER-ON-WHEELS ON CAMPUS

Thanks to a National Science Foundation grant, the Geoscience Department brought the Doppler-onWheels mobile radar system to campus for two weeks. About 70 HWS students participated in a combination of fieldwork and coursework, immersing themselves in the study of meteorology, and participating in educational outreach events across central and western New York.

JAMES CARROLL LAUNCHES FIRST FARASH LECTURE

Drawing hundreds to his lecture, distinguished scholar and bestselling author James Carroll gave the inaugural Max and Marian Farash Community Lecture. Titled “No War is Holy: Saying No to God-sanctioned Violence,” Carroll’s lecture underscored the relationships among the world’s three major monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The rankings consider colleges’ contributions to the public good, taking into consideration social mobility, research and service.

GEARAN JOINS BIPARTISAN COMMISSION

HWS NAMED ACLS PUBLIC FELLOW HOST

President Mark D. Gearan has been appointed to a national commission focusing on electoral system and congressional reform, and encouragement of public service. An effort of the Bipartisan Policy Center, it is chaired by Senators Tom Daschle, Trent Lott and Olympia Snowe, and Secretaries Dan Glickman and Dirk Kempthorne.

Hobart and William Smith Colleges’ Center for Global Education was among only 19 organizations selected as a host institution in the 2013 American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Public Fellows Program. HWS is the only academic institution among this year’s hosts. In recent years, the Colleges have been recognized for their efforts to promote international education as one of five recipients of the 2010 Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization from NAFSA: Association of International Educators. Additionally, the Colleges rank nationally in terms of the percentage of students who participate in off-campus study.

A photograph taken by former Hobart sailor Amory Ross ’06 was named one of the “Pictures of the Year” by Sports Illustrated. The photograph was one of a handful of stunning sports pictures featured on the magazine’s website - and was the only sailing photograph to earn a “Picture of the Year” title. Olive Prince Dance, a dance company founded by Olive Prince ’99, was in residence at HWS from Feb. 4 - 8. Prince, who has been commissioned to create site-specific pieces throughout Philadelphia, created “twine: a celebration of power” to honor the 40th anniversary of women’s studies at the Colleges.

You’ve come to love a place and value the relationships you’ve made and, in many ways, you don’t want it to end. The Cook Parents Circle is a way to extend that from a financial perspective but also an emotional level.” n

The Buckleys are co-chairs of the HWS Parents Executive Committee and are among a growing number of non-alum families who have made cumulative commitments to the Colleges in the amount of $25,000 or more. As such, they are part of the unique and dedicated group recognized as members of The Cook Parents Circle.

Established in 2012 in honor of former Trustee Langdon P. L.H.D. ’12 and Lyn Cook P’99, P’05, themselves the parents of two Hobart men - Whitney ’99 and Freddy ’05, The Cook Parents Circle encourages other families to provide sustained support to HWS. The Cooks were recently responsible for one of the largest donations the Colleges have ever received from non-alum parents.

For the Buckleys, daughter Madeline ’15 is the first child to attend HWS, but Jerry grew up in Geneva and the family returns often to a house on Seneca Lake. A number of other family members attended the Colleges, including his aunt, Catherine Buckley, who graduated in 1937.

He explains that William Smith was Madeline’s first and only choice, partly because of the soccer program, and he and Anne have formed friendships through the team. Numerous trips to home- and away- games and dinners with parents, players and coaches afterward have helped form a bond. So much so, he notes, that the end of Madeline’s first season left many parents of younger students realizing they were going to miss the graduating seniors’ parents as much as

PIECE OF CAKE Ellie Molina A life-long resident of Geneva, Ellie Molina has been working for the Colleges Dining Services on and off since the age of 15. “My dad told me I needed to learn how to earn my own money,” she says. “I started serving food, refreshing the condiments and waitressing for private functions and events under the direction of now-retired Dining Services Catering Manager Pat Heieck P’88, L.H.D. ’10.”

Molina found her passion for food service in the great hall of Saga, and was inspired to pursue a career in the industry. With encouragement from her parents, Molina took an internship with Walt Disney World and later enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America. From there she moved to California where she worked in some of the finest restaurants in Santa Rosa.

In 2006, the Colleges had an opening for a baker, and Molina jumped at the opportunity to come back to where it all began. Now head pastry chef, Molina begins most days at 6 a.m. with colleagues Becky Mills and Wayne Nicholson, baking 100 dozen chocolate chip cookies, 12 dozen muffins, 30 cheesecakes and dozens upon dozens of finger desserts.

LASTING IMPACT Craig Rimmerman “My students have been and will always be my first priority,” says Professor of Public Policy and Political Science Craig Rimmerman, who arrived at HWS nearly three decades ago. “I’ve been honored to work with highly motivated students who wish to make a contribution beyond Hobart and William Smith. What inspires me most is watching them thrive and grow.”

This spring, Rimmerman is teaching three courses, including two sections of “Democracy and Public Policy” and “Sexual Minority Movements and Public Policy,” which has its largest enrollment since he began teaching the course in 1994.

“Issues of sexual identity are not as big of a deal as they were in 1986 when I started here. The enrollment numbers reflect a growing acceptance on our campus, which

mirrors changes in the larger society. But much like on the national level, there is more work to be done,” says Rimmerman, who in 2012 received the faculty prize for scholarship.

Outside of the classroom, Rimmerman has an impressive record of scholarly achievement including an international reputation in three fields – gay and lesbian politics, civic activism and service learning.

He is the author of eight books focusing on ongoing urgent social issues including From Identity to Politics: The Lesbian and Gay Movements in the United States, Gay Rights, Military Wrongs and Politics of Gay Rights. As a trendsetting researcher, he is an authority on youth activism, which he has detailed in his book The New Citizenship: Unconventional Politics, Activism, and Service, now in its fourth edition. Next year, he will release the second edition of The Lesbian and Gay

Movements: Assimilation or Liberation? with a focus on what has and hasn’t been achieved during President Barack Obama’s tenure.

Rimmerman’s expertise, especially at the intersection of LGBT issues and politics, is regularly sought by the national media including the New York Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, CNN, Christian Science Monitor, Philadelphia Inquirer and the Los Angeles Times.

The Pulteney Street Survey recently caught up with Rafe Mattingly ’08 and Sue Willard ’99, associate directors of admissions, as they work to recruit even more impressive Classes of 2017.

Why did you choose HWS as a prospective student?

Mattingly: I wanted to play Division I lacrosse and study to be a high school chemistry teacher. I did all of those things, spent a semester abroad in New Zealand and participated in Koshare Dance. Those experiences placed me well outside of my comfort zone but were two of the best memories of my time as a student.

Willard: I attended basketball camp as a sophomore in high school and fell in love with the food. A year later I was being recruited to play soccer. William Smith Head Coach Aliceann Wilber P’13 was the first coach who truly cared about what I wanted to accomplish

You’re on the road recruiting students 12+ weeks out of the year; what’s a typical day on the road?

Mattingly: I’m usually up at 5:30 a.m. to pack because I rarely stay in one place for more than a night, making for lots of lost toothbrushes. Coffee is an absolute must. I am at my first school visit by 7:30 a.m.—unless I get a flat tire or get lost. I visit at least four schools a day and in between, I set up shop at a Starbucks to catch up on e-mail. Lunch is usually with a high school guidance counselor and dinner is a pizza party for prospective students followed by onsite interviews. I’m back at the hotel by 10 p.m. and ready to do it all over again.

Willard: A typical day involves visiting a bunch of schools, meeting with guidance counselors, prospective students, parents and alums while doing my best not to get lost. I’ve learned that the GPS is correct most of the time, except when it is taking me into the Long Island Sound. Every day is an adventure.

What’s a typical day when you’re not on the road?

Willard: No two days are the same here.

When you work for Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admissions Robert Murphy, there’s never any down time. Our office plays an important role in shaping how the Colleges are going to look in the future.

The goal is to get a better class than we did last year.

Mattingly: Before I get out of bed in the morning, I am running through the list of things I have to accomplish. I usually give three information sessions a day to prospective families, interview prospective students, respond to e-mails and answer phone calls.

What’s your favorite student essay?

Willard: A student wrote about her personality through her freckles. It told me so much about her character and creativity.

So many times students think they need to write about profound accomplishments or even tragedies, when sometimes it’s as simple as making me laugh and telling me something I can’t learn from a transcript.

Mattingly: A very simple essay about how the student’s family gets together for dinner one night a week and what that means to him. It was a window into how the student would fit at HWS. How many interviews and college fairs do you average in a recruitment cycle?

Mattingly: 190 interviews and 15-25 college fairs.

Willard: I’m competitive; I’ll go on the road an extra day to have the highest numbers.

What motivates your work?

Mattingly: HWS is a personal place and that informs how I do my job. There’s nothing better than seeing a student I met in the fall of their junior year walk through the matriculation tent at Orientation. There are so many great colleges out there and the fact that they’re choosing us gives me a sense of pride as an alum.

Willard: I love working with students, whether they’re a prospective student or current student. I joke that if I applied to HWS now I wouldn’t get it. We’re bringing in incredible students and becoming more selective. As an alum, that’s all I can hope for.

Do you have a work philosophy?

Willard: Enjoy what you do, take pride in your work and don’t ask anyone to do what you wouldn’t do yourself.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Alejandra Molina The values of equity, cultural acceptance and openness are at the heart of a liberal arts education, and the Office of Intercultural Affairs (ICA) is at the center of Hobart and William Smith. Led by Alejandra Molina, the ICA promotes racial and ethnic pluralism by fostering interaction among people of many cultures and by providing opportunities for all HWS community members to celebrate their cultural heritage.

Along with directing Intercultural Affairs, Molina serves on the Colleges’ Commission on Inclusive Excellence, and works daily to bring Latino awareness to campus through connections with Geneva’s Latino PHOTO BY KEVIN COLTON population. Her efforts model engaged citizenship for the students she works with every day.

Born in Guatemala, Molina joined the HWS faculty in 1995. She received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in Spanish American Colonial Literature at Cornell University.

WALKING TO WORK John and Kathryn Vaughn P’08 “Walking to work is one of the better things about moving to a small community,” says Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science John Vaughn P’08 as he and his wife, Visual Arts Curator Kathryn Vaughn P’08, exit their Washington Street home and head for South Main Street.

The couple moved to Geneva from Chicago nearly 30 years ago after John earned his Ph.D. in mathematical logic from the University of Illinois at Chicago and landed a job in the mathematics department at Hobart and William Smith. Kathryn, who is a graduate of the University of Chicago and had been working at the Art Institute of Chicago, began working in the HWS art department a year later, after the birth of their daughter Jessica ’08. And every day since then they have walked to work, minus a few days when their daughter was in high school and they had to carpool, or on the days when the sidewalks are too icy.

“Our neighbors tell us they look out their

window when we go by to see what we are wearing to know what the weather is like,” says Kathryn.

The approximate three-mile roundtrip hike each day to John’s Lansing Hall office and Kathryn’s Houghton House office is, as John explains, a transitional period allowing them to “…leave work or home behind and get ready for the next place.” The couple has enjoyed the exercise, but more so the routine has allowed them to know their neighborhood. They greet students jogging past and wave to residents along the way as they stop by Opus, one of Geneva’s coffee shops, for a cup of tea. Their conversation mostly stays focused on their surroundings and rarely do they discuss work or home matters.

“Over the years we’ve watched as the landscape has changed; the windmills and smoke stacks that have popped up along the lake. We’re grateful for the renaissance that is going on in downtown Geneva, the revitalization of the historic row houses, and the many improvements that have occurred on South Main,” says Kathryn, noting that their favorite stop is near the benches on South Main overlooking the Bozzuto Boat House. n

John Vaughn’s recent research involves embedded computing microcontrollers like those that are found in the iPhone or a Wii game controller. He recently authored The Microcontroller Recipe Book as well as a research paper with students called “Open Source Hardware Development” that will be published in the journal Circuit Cellar this spring.

John’s next project will examine the Xbox Kinect and adaptations with robots. He has led programs abroad to Italy, England and Japan and volunteers with the HWS Prison Education Project teaching mathematics to inmates.

As the visual arts curator, Kathryn Vaughn is responsible for the Colleges’ art collection –The Collections of Hobart and William Smith Colleges –and oversees the operation of The Davis Gallery at Houghton House. Her recent exhibitions include “Double Vision: Woman as Image and Imagemaker” (2013) and “Domestic to International: Art from the Home of President Gearan” (2012).

In collaboration with faculty, she is developing an educational outreach program to make the Colleges’ exhibitions of modern and contemporary art available to local high school students.

AT THE HELM John Nichols When John Nichols introduces himself as captain of The William Scandling, the Colleges’ 65-foot, steel hulled vessel, he’s often met with confused looks and additional questions.

Used for teaching and research, The William Scandling provides a mobile platform for students and faculty to investigate the physical, chemical, biological and geological properties of the lake.

It’s believed to be one of the only floating labs in the United States dedicated to undergraduate research.

“I retired from my job with the Monroe County, New York Sheriff’s Department and saw an advertisement in the newspaper for captain of The William Scandling,” says Nichols. “I thought it would be an interesting second career that would allow me to continue being at the helm of a boat.”

At the Sherriff’s Department, Nichols was assigned to the Monroe County Marine Unit where he patrolled the coastlines of Lake Ontario and Irondequoit Bay as a marine sergeant until his retirement in 1994. “I enforced state statutes, performed boat safety inspections and livery inspections, and patrolled the marinas during the summer months,” he says. “I was also involved in search, rescue and recovery operations and worked closely with the Sheriff’s dive team in training and emergency situations.”

Nichols obtained a Coast Guard Master’s license through the Sheriff’s Department, which required him to spend at least 90 days at sea in a vessel, pass an intensive exam and take continuing education courses. “Because Seneca Lake leads to the Cayuga-Seneca Canal and the Canal connects the Erie Canal to the Great Lakes and ultimately, the Atlantic Ocean, I’m required to maintain my Coast Guard license as captain of The William Scandling.”

“If you want a job doing this for the love of boating, you have the wrong career,” says Nichols. “This is often tough work and Seneca Lake is as challenging as Lake Ontario at any given time with changing winds and short, rough waves; my job is to make sure no one gets hurt.”

COMMUNITY CONNECTION Walter Bowyer In more than two decades at the Colleges, Professor of Chemistry Walter Bowyer has collaborated with students on scholarly papers, offered them research opportunities, and worked with them in the laboratory through the summer months. No matter the setting, he is dedicated to ensuring their success.

An expert on sustainable chemistry who routinely secures external funding, Bowyer researches new ways to produce manmade chemicals used for pharmaceuticals and plastics that are not harmful to the environment. But his work doesn’t stop in the lab.

Beyond campus, Bowyer is deeply committed to enriching the lives of young people through education-based volunteer work.

“So many members of the campus community participate in service projects,” Bowyer says. “Volunteering makes me feel that much more connected to HWS students. It’s so important to them and to me.”

Bowyer first began serving the community by coaching basketball for the Boys & Girls Club of Geneva. But it was on two study abroad trips to Ecuador and Peru that Bowyer realized how he could really make a difference through service. On those visits, he volunteered at a specialized facility that offers daycare services for low-income women facing personal hardships.

“Seeing the children of these young women endure such difficult circumstances really struck me,” Bowyer says. “That experience reinforced my desire to continue to serve the community at home and spend more time helping local children.”

Back in Geneva, Bowyer began volunteering with the Geneva Agri-Business Child Development (ABCD), a local nonprofit dedicated to providing educational services, such as Head Start programming. He was

immediately impressed by the vibrancy of the children, as well as their desire to learn.

Now, Bowyer heads to ABCD once a week to read books to students and encourage learning through play.

“Personally, community service is an important part of what I do and volunteering with young people can be a lot of fun,” Bowyer says.

In 2005, Bowyer and former Trustee Horace Allen ’85 joined together to create the HWS Summer Academy. The program brings the most talented and ambitious minority students from Geneva High School to the Colleges for two weeks each summer.

From chemistry to English, students in the program participate in a range of academic programming offered around campus.

Summer after summer, Bowyer says he’s happy to work with local high school students and enjoys seeing them receive the support of their family and friends when they complete the program.

“Being a part of the Summer Academy has been great,” Bowyer says. “It’s just so rewarding to see the students succeed.” n —by Steven Bodnar

ROWING REWARDS Sandra Chu Written on a 3.5 index card that Sandra Chu keeps with her at all times, is a mission statement:

“To inspire others to exceed their potential and relentlessly pursue excellence by being a touchstone of encouragement and confidence, an innovative architect of opportunities and a passionate educator in the sport of rowing.”

She reads it every day, sometimes multiple times, to keep herself grounded as she guides the Heron Rowing Program.

“I wanted to get into coaching because I wanted to work with students who are in a formative time, who have so much untapped potential,” says Sandra Chu, who was named head coach of William Smith Rowing in 2002 following three seasons as an assistant coach of women’s rowing at Kansas State. “Helping students make decisions that are right for them is important to me.”

A 1991 graduate of Princeton University, Chu competed as a coxswain for the Tiger varsity crew from 1988 to 1991. She was an All-Ivy League selection, earning medals at the EAWRC Sprints Championships in 1989 and 1991 and at the Head of the Charles Regatta in 1990.

Chu was completing her master’s degree in English and creative writing at New York University when she realized how much she missed being on the water. “I couldn’t row at NYU, and I began to understand how important it was to me.” Chu decided to take a risk and devote her career to coaching full-time. “I took an unpaid coaching internship at Princeton University and loved every second of it,” she says. “I worked six jobs to keep afloat but going down to the boat house everyday was worth it.”

Though Chu was looking for an opportunity to run her own program, what attracted her to William Smith is what often attracts her students to the Colleges. “I wanted to work with ambitious, competitive- spirited women in a challenging liberal arts setting,” she says. “William Smith women are drivers—they get things done. I really thrive working with that kind of student.”

Last fall, Chu guided the Herons to one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. The varsity eight put on an impressive performance during the world’s largest regatta, bringing home a silver medal in the women’s collegiate eights at the Head of the Charles in Boston. It’s the second time the Herons have medaled at the Charles, but the first in this event category.

The Herons’ spring 2012 season was equally notable—they won the Liberty League Title, the NYS Title, and placed every boat on the podium at the NYS Championships. The Herons earned a bronze medal at the ECAC Championships and NCAA Championships in the Varsity 8, which helped the team place fourth in the nation. Following the season, Chu was named Liberty League Coach of the Year, ECAC Coach of the Year, CRCA (Collegiate Rowing Coaches’ Association) DIII Coach of the Year and the Joy of Sculling Collegiate Coach of the Year.

Perhaps more impressive than the team’s on-the-water accomplishments are William Smith’s academic accolades. Chu’s Herons have earned 87 Liberty League All-Academic nods, 27 CRCA ScholarAthlete awards, and two CoSIDA Academic All-Americans®.

“I see myself as a mentor,” says Chu. “Academics and life skills are a big part of what we do. One of my favorite parts of this job is watching students grow over four years. Helping them to realize their potential is rewarding.”

An active member of the campus community, Chu serves on several committees, including the Middle States Accreditation Committee and as an instructor for the Hobart and William Smith Leadership Institute.

“Whether on the water or in the classroom, the hallmark of our program is to complete the work the hard, right way every single time,” says Chu. “There are no shortcuts, and hard work pays off in the end. “In many ways the transition from Kodak to HWS was seamless. Buildings and Grounds recently partnered with the Office of Sustainability to form the Energy and Climate Committee to better integrate efforts and inform decisions in new construction, renovations and general physical plant management.

Adams helps monitor the environmental aspects of residential living spaces, such as energy use, recycling, broken fixtures and open windows. “This job is a great balance between working in the field and on the computer,” says Adams. “I am always learning something new and I’m never bored.” n —by Jessica Evangelista Balduzzi ’05

Mary Kelly Since joining HWS in 2007, Associate Professor of Education Mary Kelly has helped launch an annual festival celebrating inclusion and the arts. Now in its fourth year, the festival provides an opportunity for participants, including people with and without disabilities, a means of expression.

STUDIOUS SERGEANT Maurice Harling P’16 Campus Safety Sergeant Maurice Harling P’16 isn’t your typical HWS student. Or campus safety officer for that matter. The former semi-pro football player, husband and father of four teenage daughters, including a William Smith first-year, Harling never pictured himself writing a thesis on the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther.

“I didn’t know I had that in me,” says Harling. “I want to get a foothold on some of the education I’ve missed over the course of 30 years.”

While on patrol one afternoon last year, Harling ran into Associate Professor of Religious Studies Richard Salter ’86, P’15.

Always intrigued by philosophy and theology, the pair struck up a conversation, and before he knew it, Harling was enrolling in a 300-level religious studies course.

“I’ve always thought of things as very black and white,” he says. “But when talking about theology, religious studies and philosophy, there’s no right or wrong answer.

I find it fascinating to be immersed in grey.”

The ability for Harling to take classes at HWS while maintaining his role with Campus Safety is due, Harling says, to Director of Campus Safety Marty Corbett. “Marty went to the Deans Office and to Human Resources to work out a way for me to attend class while maintaining my position with the Office of Campus Safety,” says Harling. “The entire HWS community has been incredibly supportive of my endeavor.”

This fall, Harling took a European studies course with Associate Professor of English Laurence Erussard. “Not only am I learning from the text, I am also learning from the students,” he says. “Some of the very brightest HWS students are in my classroom.

I am in awe of their ability.”

While Harling tries his best to blend in with the other students, he’s become

somewhat a surrogate parent to some. “I am always telling the students; ‘hey be careful this weekend’ or ‘make sure you call your mom!’” he laughs.

Balancing the role of campus sergeant, parent and student comes with its challenges, but the role of student has certainly helped him with his day job. “Paper work has always been a chore, but it is not as daunting of a task now that I write theology papers!”

Harling gets homework help from daughters Sarah, Ashley, Kayli and Emily, too. “Just the other day, Emily taught me how to save my papers to a flash drive.”

This spring, Harling is taking “Torah and Testament,” a religious studies class taught by Salter and Professor of Religious Studies Michael Dobkowski, and he’ll audit an aesthetics class with Assistant Professor of Philosophy Carol Oberbrunner. And in the summer he’ll pursue a 450-level philosophy and metaphysics independent study under the advisement of Hobart Dean Eugen Baer HON’07, P’95, P’97.

Since taking classes at HWS, Harling finds it hard to turn off the material. “When studying philosophy and theology, you can’t think about the world the same way. You’re changed.”

Ultimately, Harling’s goal is to one day walk across the steps of Coxe Hall to receive a degree. “One of my grandkids might push me across the steps, but I’ll get there,” he jokes.

“You get out of life what you put into it, says Harling. “If you work hard, it will pay dividends. It might not come in a monetary form; it may come in respect, or the ability to pursue an education.” n —by Jessica Evangelista Balduzzi ’05

SEEKING BALANCE The Venerable Tenzin Yignyen

In a ceremonial gesture, The Venerable Tenzin Yignyen, instructor of Asian languages and cultures, pours sand from a glass vase into the water of Seneca Lake.

Encircled by students, Yignyen concludes the sacred practice of creating and dismantling a Tibetan Buddhist sand mandala, an ancient tradition that symbolizes life’s unwavering march from beginning to end. For centuries the ceremony was shared only among Buddhist practitioners.

The lakeside ceremony, which was conducted during one of Yignyen’s much sought-after “Tibetan Mandala Painting” classes, was a consequential moment that captures the essence of the Tibetan-born monk’s important educational work at Hobart and William Smith.

“I don’t teach ‘Mandala Painting’ strictly as a religion course or strictly as an art course,” says Yignyen, whose lectures also focus on Buddhist philosophy and meditation. “It’s about beautifying yourself through ethical disciplines. It’s a spiritual practice which helps one learn how to develop or grow internally through compassion, love, responsibility, kindness, respect and selfdiscipline.”

Ordained as a Buddhist monk by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, Yignyen is a member of the Dalai Lama’s personal monastery. Yignyen has been invited to construct and lecture on mandalas across the country and holds a “Master of Sutra and Tantra” degree with highest honors, which is equivalent to a Ph.D. At the Colleges, he has taught Tibetan mandala painting and Tibetan Buddhism for more than a decade during which Yignyen leads students on the collaborative creation of a vibrant and colorful sand mandala. Each semester, the sand art is produced on a platform in the atrium of the L. Yignyen says students who take the mandala course learn much more than Buddhist history, art, and philosophy. In the classes, Yignyen shares the principles for living a balanced, peaceful, compassionate, and loving life.

“The education of the mind must coincide with the education of the heart,” he says. “We want to be happy and healthy, and we should seek balance. The ultimate happiness of life can be achieved through developing a good heart and a good brain.

Unifying these two is essential.”

Yignyen extends that philosophy beyond the mandala class and even beyond his work at the Colleges, bringing his spiritual beliefs into his everyday life.

“All of life is precious,” he says. “It is wonderful to have a happy life, but we can break it down to happiness in the second, the hour, the day, the week, the month and the year, as well. Living in the present moment is important because it is a gift.”

Through his teachings on campus, Yignyen demonstrates the importance of seeking peace and relaxation outside of the classroom and work. He says that students understand his philosophy on life and are welcoming of the mandala painting experience.

“The students learn about what makes you a happier and more balanced person in your everyday life,” Yignyen says. “The class is a medium through which students can be reminded of the good qualities that make life easier and learn how to handle difficulties.” n —by Steven Bodnar

SHIELDS UP For nearly a decade, Associate Professor of Classics Leah Himmelhoch has invited her students to do a close reading of the great classics such as Homer’s epic poem Iliad.

At first the translated text written in dactylic hexameters can seem foreign to students until she asks them to stand, grab a spear and practice the warrior’s maneuvers from the great Greek battles.

“The Iliad is hard enough to read; it can intimidate,” she says. “I want to teach students to connect with the writings; these were people and I want my students to have sympathy and empathy for their experiences. I want them to see that the text is lively, the characters are engaging, and the stories are head scratchers.

I want them to ask themselves ‘What would I do?’ as they read about the dilemmas of the ages.”

Throughout her education—first as an undergraduate at Yale University and then at the University of Texas at Austin for her masters and Ph.D. —Himmelhoch has learned by doing. Starting her career as an archeologist, she is drawn to historical artifacts that reveal the story of past lives and how people actually lived. Her third-floor office in Smith Hall contains bookshelves filled with a library of the classics but also swords, shields and statues.

“I believe if I am teaching about the weapon, I should be able to use it. When you read about a spear in literature, I think, “How do you use the spear? How does it work?” says Himmelhoch, who in addition to teaching Greek and Latin Literature, Greek Archaeology and Ancient Gender and Sexuality, is also a martial artist.

Trojan War, Himmelhoch brought her students closer to Dark Ages and Archaic warfare, and their understanding of the first great book of warfare, by taking them to Smith Lawn to form a phalanx. As once a contingent of 8,00010,000 warriors would form a line of defense, students in her “Ancient Warfare” class stood shoulder to shoulder with long wooden spears drawn, and their wooden shields overlapped to reenact the ancient battle scenes. They also experiment, trying out the different proposed theories about what an ancient phalanx may actually have looked or functioned.

What drives her work? She has a natural curiosity about where everything comes from, a determination to do empirical research, and a passion for ancient language. “Poetry is also history, written so it could be memorized and repeated,” she explains. “By reading ancient texts, we can talk to dead people. So when I started teaching I approached it with my students as taking a look at how we speak to each other.”

The texts are engrossing. “Iliad, the first text written in the West is about war, why?”

Himmelhoch asks. “The hero is Achilles and the text celebrates his death. We learn from the

Iliad about class and gender issues, and we learn that warfare is a means to immortality.”

And what drives her teaching? “I consider myself a liberal arts professor. Classics were once the only educational degree of the time, imparting the skill sets of citizenship which included the ability to write and critique.

Learning those things requires brain push-ups.

I want my students to know what the liberal arts are.”

“Literature talks about things that are foundationally important in life, such as death and love. By the Iliad’s end, Achilles, the greatest warrior ever, only wants his dead friend, Patroklos, back, but he especially wants to go home to his father, whom he has just realized he will never see again. So I ask myself, how do I get students to read closely?

Since arriving at the Colleges in 2010, Scott MacPhail, assistant director of health professions counseling and fellowship advising, has been instrumental in assisting HWS students and alums compete for the most prestigious and highly coveted fellowships, scholarships and grants in the world.

“Fellowships support international study, research, graduate study, and a wide range of service, internship and learning experiences,” says MacPhail. As the fellowships adviser, MacPhail works closely with students to help them identify opportunities and develop strong applications.

Applying for a nationally competitive fellowship can be a rewarding and valuable experience in itself, he says. “For many students the process is unlike anything they have done before. It can help clarify goals and ambitions, improve writing and presentation skills, and offer preparation for competitive graduate school and job applications.”

In addition to his role as fellowship adviser, MacPhail serves as assistant director of health professions counseling. “Hobart and William Smith Colleges is an ideal place to prepare for a career in the health professions,” he says.

“Over the past five years our placement rate for medical, dental and veterinary school applicants has exceeded 80 percent, well above national averages.” Many recent graduates are also now successful physical therapists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, and a variety of other clinical practitioners, he notes.

Furthermore, each year at least two or three HWS students are accepted into the early assurance program at SUNY Upstate Medical University through the Blackwell Medical Scholars program. HWS students have also gained acceptance to the early assurance programs at SUNY Upstate and the University of Buffalo as college sophomores. Last year, Maria Mangine ’14 was accepted to the early assurance program at the University of Buffalo Dental School and Guanqun Li ’14 was accepted to the medical school program at SUNY Upstate.

Prior to joining HWS, MacPhail was an academic adviser at the University of Rochester specializing in health professions advising. 3-D Project The poster was created by Karen George ’09, a dance major who did an independent study project with me on dance and gender. To represent the various fields of research she was connecting, we thought a multi-dimensional display would work the best. As one spins the top circle, those categories line up with a second circle, and then a third layer. Thus, any three categories could be in combination, such as dancers, body, and media, and Karen would have examples, research and opinions about those correlations. It was a brilliant final project to demonstrate her learning throughout the semester’s research.

For more than 25 years, Professor of Dance Cynthia Williams has ensured that dance education is a vibrant component of the Colleges’ academic curriculum. A tireless advocate for performing arts both on and off-campus, Williams routinely arranges for and participates in professional dance programming, presentations and workshops. HAT TRICK Skylar Beaver ’08 On a mild fall day in October, you can find Skylar Beaver ’08, director of the Annual Fund, darting off to one of three places: the Office of Advancement, McCooey Field or The Cooler.

“There is a time of year when field hockey and ice hockey overlap,” explains Beaver, a part time assistant field hockey coach and the William Smith club ice hockey coach. “I work in the Office of Advancement from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., rush off to field hockey practice for two hours, grab a quick dinner and I’m on the ice by 9 p.m. But no matter how busy the work day is, there’s something special about lacing up my skates or sneakers, hitting the ice or turf, and being surrounded by students.”

While in high school, Beaver was determined to play field hockey at a Division I school, but fate intervened when she met William Smith Field Hockey Coach Sally Scatton P’02, P’06 at a camp. “We just clicked,” she explains. “I immediately felt like HWS was home.”

In addition to her role as a studentathlete on Scatton’s field hockey team,

Beaver was a member of the William Smith club ice hockey team, coached at the time by Jared Weeden ’91, assistant vice president of Alumni Relations and Annual Giving, and Casey Peterson, director of Leadership Giving. Weeden and Peterson took her under their wings, offering her a job in the Office of Advancement stuffing envelopes.

“I’d take envelopes home to stuff during Oprah,” she jokes. “By senior year I was working 15 hours a week on the Annual Fund and staying active as a member of the Stewardson Society. I have a passion for making a difference and I realized I could achieve it through a career in development.”

A month after earning a sociology degree, Beaver accepted a position as an assistant director in the Colleges’ Office of Advancement. “It all fell into place,” she says.

“I looked at one apartment, handed them a check and moved back to Geneva a month after graduation.”

Beaver is now in her fourth role at the Colleges, advancing from assistant director to associate director, and later director of reunion and class campaigns. She has been

director of the Annual Fund since July 2012, overseeing the Stewardson Society, Class Agent and Reunion campaigns, young alumni and alumnae initiatives, the phonathon and overall management of the Annual Fund.

The office’s strategic mission is to increase participation to 36 percent by May 2015, a challenge Beaver isn’t afraid to take head on. “It’s my job to remind alumni and alumnae why they chose HWS.” Being an alumna has certainly led to success.

“Whether the alum graduated two years or 40 years behind me, we have a shared experience.”

And it’s the relationships with her fellow alums that give her work purpose. “I can have a bad day and come home to a card in the mail from Eric Hall Anderson ’59. It’s these types of relationships that keep me going.”

ROCKING THE BOAT Scott Iklé ’84 Every day since he began serving as the head coach of the HWS sailing team in 1993, Scott Iklé ’84 has commuted to sailing practice by boat. Currently he travels to practice on a 17-foot Zodiac inflatable boat with Tucker, his third Portuguese Water Dog during his tenure.

The three-mile ride from his home on Clark’s Point on Seneca Lake “is one of the best benefits of the job,” he says. “It’s 15 minutes when I can clear my mind. On the ride in, I start to focus on practice, while the ride home allows me to wrap up my day and enjoy the sunset. Because of the ever-changing weather, every sunset over Seneca Lake is just a little different and always spectacular.” n

WORKING TO PLAY

I

t’s a feeling that’s nearly impossible to describe – that fleeting trip down the chute of a slide; the anxiety in the pit of your stomach as you jump from rock to rock, eluding lava. For a five year old, a playground is a realm of infinite possibilities: a pirate ship, a space station on a collision course with an unexplored planet, a mansion with twisting staircases and hidden rooms. To put it very simply, it is magic.

It is this magic that Hobart and William Smith and the Geneva community sought to ignite in the community’s children with a project rooted in collaboration: the Geneva Lakefront Community Playground. Perched just next to Seneca Lake, the play set occupies a prominent place between Routes 5&20 and the Long Pier.

“What better backdrop than the shore of Seneca Lake to demonstrate a community working together?” asked City Manager Mathew Horn as he stood before the giant ribbon at the official opening of the space. “This playground represents the best of Geneva.”

Indeed, the neon slides and intricate twists of rope symbolize the labor of more than 250 HWS and Geneva community members who worked to install the playground, the impressive collaboration among the City, the Colleges and the Geneva Community Projects committee.

Previously, the Colleges helped to build a new playground at West Street Elementary School with national playground building initiative KaBOOM! in the fall of 2011 – and renovated two more. The experience was so successful that the Colleges hoped to take on a similar project at a much larger scale.

“Play is critical to the success of children,“ says Darrell Hammond, the founder and CEO of KaBOOM! “When children can play in a free environment, they will build important tools for adulthood, such as leadership and diplomacy.”

So, working together, the Colleges and the entire Geneva community began fundraising for a centrally located and large playground.

During the process, Geneva was named a “2012 Playful City USA” community by the KaBOOM! organization. The Let’s Play group, a community partnership led by Dr. Pepper Snapple Group to get kids and families active nationwide, awarded the community a $20,000 grant to be used toward the project – one of only two granted in New York State.

“No one’s doing what Geneva’s doing,” explains President Mark D. Gearan. “Working together in a collaborative spirit, we did this together. It’s what this community is becoming known for.”

Belinda Venuti, president of Geneva Community Projects, echoed these sentiments, praising the strength of the shared effort.

“We did this collectively; we worked alongside students, community members and government employees – and not just in the construction, but in the planning process – to accomplish a major goal. Many of us made new friends,” explains Venuti. “I drive by the lakefront every day, and even in the cold weather, I see kids and families enjoying the playground; and I think it is just going to get busier.”

Students came in droves on the build date in mid-October, eager to create a meaningful space. Members of the Hobart basketball team did heavy lifting, and William Smith lacrosse were the last volunteers to leave, with only the car headlights of volunteers to light their work. “I like to believe that these students will always remember how they worked together to make this happen,” says Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning Katie Flowers. “I hope when they come back for Reunion, they will return to the playground and tell their own children ‘yes – I built that.’”

“Although we are constantly at work with Geneva – through mentorships, tutoring and volunteer work – I think this is particularly impactful because it is tangible,” explains Flowers.

“It is a physical resource that

is for the entire community – regardless of income; it is for everybody.”

With the playground fully constructed and a daily crowd of enthusiastic children climbing the complicated twists of the ‘double bobble rider,’ the space remains a canvas of continued growth. Before construction even broke ground, the initial $100,000 goal was exceeded, and revised to make an expansion of the project possible. Already, two more pieces have been fully funded, with a goal of five unique additions this spring. n —by Sarah Tompkins ’10

DOWN UNDER In the fall, 32 students from HWS and Union College joined Professor of Economics Tom Drennen and Associate Professor of Biology Meghan Brown for a science and sustainability-focused experience in Australia and New Zealand. Students spent three months taking classes with related field trips in marine biology, terrestrial ecology, Australian culture and history, and sustainability. Among the highlights were a giant wind farm, a hydro plant and a geothermal plant, swimming in sulfur pools, staying three days in a traditional ceremonial house, and hiking up Mount Ngauruhoe, (known as Mount Doom in “Lord of the Rings.”) n —by Cynthia McVey

GOLDWATER ON THE GO Samuel Schneider ’13 Samuel Schneider ’13 first knew there was something special about HWS when he visited during a college tour. “I’d already visited Cornell, Syracuse and Rochester when I came to HWS and sat in on a class with Associate Professor of Chemistry Erin Pelkey. I gravitated toward his teaching style and the inclusiveness of the classroom. The whole place felt right.

So I applied.”

When he returned for an Accepted Student Open House, he met Professor Emeritus of Biology Thomas Glover, who emphasized the collaborative nature of the faculty. “The more I learned, the more I realized the research I could do and the kinds of outcomes I could achieve,” says Schneider. “I understood that at Hobart and William Smith, I would be more than a number. I would get personal attention.”

Now in his senior year, the chemistry major is working on his Honors project in the lab of Assistant Professor of Chemistry Kristin Slade, looking at how the cellular environment affects enzymes.

“The research we are doing could one day have an impact on protein diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” says Schneider. “I want to make a difference in the understanding and treatment of these diseases and produce research that will have a lasting impact.”

In all of this work, he’s been surrounded by faculty members who’ve taken an active interest in his education– including the team who helped him apply for and ultimately receive a highlycompetitive 2012 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. More than just a financial award, the Goldwater will open doors and set Schneider apart as he pursues his Ph.D. in chemistry after graduation. Says Schneider: “Hobart and William Smith is the kind of place where your professors believe in you and work with you, where they make your future a priority so that when you graduate, you are prepared for life.” n —by Catherine Williams

It’s 6 a.m. While most of campus is still sound asleep, Anna Dorman ’14 is sitting in her bedroom with a big cup of coffee. And her planner.

You’ll find her here just about every morning, thinking about her day and plotting her next 24 hours with meticulous organization. “Every year, I go into The College Store and buy the biggest planner they have,” she says. “I lost it once and it was the most stressful two hours of my life.”

No matter what she has going on that day– whether it’s a test, organizing a debate tournament, volunteering with Big Brothers, Big Sisters or all three and more–Dorman doesn’t sweat it. “My time is structured,” she says. “There isn’t a lot of room for spontaneity, but I never feel rushed or pressured. I have my priorities, and I follow through with them.”

The daughter of Dr. Jan McGonagle ’87 and Dean Dorman ’87, she is double major (economics and international relations) and double minor (environmental studies and Middle Eastern studies), with a variety of academic interests. She typically takes five courses each semester.

“I love the small classes and the interdisciplinary focus of my studies. My professors are funny, passionate and above all smart and supportive,” says Dorman, who also holds down jobs as a writer in the Office of Communications, a civic leader in the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning, and a note taker for the Center for Teaching and Learning.

IN STYLE Shane Samuel ’13

There’s something timeless about the way that Shane Samuel ’13 dresses, making him look like a figure cut from a 1960’s photograph and transposed onto the steps of Coxe Hall in 2013.

His crisp, plaid shirt and navy cardigan look so earnest paired with wingtip loafers that one almost misses the rolled pant cuff revealing a bright, wildly striped sock – the anachronistic evidence of Samuel’s status as a member of the Classes of 2013. “I remember one day I looked down and I just looked like everyone else,” says Samuel. “I thought, ‘that has to change.’”

So Samuel ditched the predictable, pleated khakis, picked up his laptop and began to blog under the header “Men in Style Society.”

A sprawling stylebook for young men, the blog highlights men’s apparel, shoes and accessories which Samuel pairs effortlessly together to create something that is both classic and fresh.

“Men in Style Society” is an homage to Samuel’s well-honed style: seamlessly stitching together formal photo shoots featuring his friends and HWS classmates and candid snapshots of fashionforward civilians who willingly climb onto postboxes or stop to pose moodily in SoHo foot traffic – all captured through the eye and lens of Samuel.

Samuel crafted his effortless style while interning at renowned fashion magazine GQ during winter break 2011.

“That magazine was what really inspired me, and interning there opened my eyes – it opened me up to take risks. It inspired me to try to create something different.”

Samuel caters to all financial budgets – mixing designer clothing with pieces from affordable department stores. His efforts have caught the eye of numerous companies including Land’s End, French Connection, SLVDR, Bass and Cheap Monday, who have been in contact with Samuel, sending samples, providing information on current and upcoming lines and, on occasion, inviting Samuel to showrooms and events.

“I look at fashion as art,” reflects Samuel.

“Style is ambiguous; it never remains the same and thus it avoids definition - the only consistent thing about fashion is that people want to follow it.”

After graduation, he plans to take his artistic passion for button-downs, knit ties and letterman cardigans to the vibrant world of glossy magazines. “I see myself on the editorial side of fashion,” he says. “I see myself sitting in the front row at runway shows.”

In the end, Samuel hopes that “Men in Style Society” acts not only as an outlet for his passion, but as a key to free those kept from their style aspirations by fear or doubt.

Between classes, lectures and lunch, Dorman is often carrying her iPhone. “I do a lot of dangerous walking and e-mailing,” she jokes, checking her notifications as she talks. “It’s probably not safe, but I’m pretty proficient at this point.”

After 5 p.m., you can find Dorman at club meetings, attending President’s Forum lectures, leading the Colleges’ national championship debate team through three weekly practices, laughing with friends at an Americans for Informed Democracy meeting, or defending her ideas before William Smith Congress. “I’m literally never not doing something,” says Dorman, who is also a Trustee Scholar.

Tuesday evenings she leads a debate program for students at the Geneva Middle School. On Wednesday nights, she volunteers at the Boys & Girls Club. And she has class president meetings at least once a week. “I also try to help plan or organize one or two special events each week, like the HWS Votes election party,” she says. “There’s always something going on.”

After an evening of organizing and leading, she starts in on her homework around 9 p.m. “I have my secret study spots,” she says. “But I can tell you that the back corner on the third floor of the library and the Blackwell Room are two of the best places for productivity on campus.”

You might think the weekend would bring respite from the fast-paced schedule, but no. Dorman travels to debate tournaments at other colleges and universities most weekends, and during those rare Saturdays when she finds herself on campus, volunteering in the community is her number one priority.

“Lately, I have been all about HWS Responds and Hurricane Sandy relief, but my favorite organization is the Boys and Girls Club,” says Dorman.

On Sunday nights, you can find her right back in her dorm room, communing with her planner and a giant, wall-sized calendar, going through her upcoming week with a fine-tipped pen, setting her priorities and making to-do lists.

“At HWS, I’ve had opportunities that I wouldn’t have had anywhere else–from studying abroad in Amman, Jordan, to attending both the Public Leadership Education Network Conference and the Clinton Global Initiative University,” she says. “If I’m not organized, I might miss something spectacular, and I want to take advantage of everything the Colleges have to offer.” n

To date, One Bead has raised nearly $40,000, including a $10,000 grant as winner of the Colleges’ “The Pitch” entrepreneurial competition, a program that pairs students who have big ideas with the mentorship of alums.

The grant allowed Wroblewski to register the organization as an official 501(c)3 non-profit.

Since those first beads, Wroblewski has twice returned to Oloosirkon, and her operation has grown beyond HWS; One Bead has customers around the world, thanks to a thriving website and blog. “It’s been amazing to see my college stand up with me, to see them give back as a community and support me,” says Wroblewski, who just completed a 1,200 bead order for William Smith Congress.

The most rewarding aspect of Wroblewski’s work is creating a meaningful bond between customers and the children. “I’m not just a girl with an idea anymore,” says Wroblewski as she carefully strings a glass bead. “I’m part of something that is much bigger than myself.” n —by Sarah Tompkins ’10

Sitting on her Odell’s bed, Sara Wroblewski ’13 is changing the world. The jars of hand-blown glass beads, yards of leather lace and clusters of tags that surround her constitute her immensely successful One Bead organization.

What started as a seedling of an idea to support a primary school in Nairobi has taken root and flourished into a thriving non-profit organization.

During the summer of 2011, while on a trip to Kenya to visit the family of a William Smith classmate, Wroblewski was presented with the opportunity to shadow Anselm Croze, a local glassblower and philanthropist. It was through Croze that Wroblewski was introduced to the children at the Oloosirkon Government Primary School: vibrant faces, enthusiastic for their studies – but without pencils and books.

“Seeing the children for the first time, I was introduced to the concept that one could have so little, but still have so much,” she says.

Driven by the need to give back, Wroblewski conceived One Bead. With the assistance of Croze, she began selling beads made of recycled glass – each handcrafted by Croze – to earn enough money to fund the purchase of books and supplies.

In weeks, Wroblewski had sold enough beads at $12 a piece to surpass her goal,

“It’s hard to put into words how much my time at the Colleges has come to define me,” says Taylor Jones ’13, a Hobart soccer standout from Fuquay-Varina, N.C. “There have been so many new experiences, new friends, new interests, and most importantly, new knowledge.”

Though he may have been different four years ago, even as a high school senior, Jones knew what he was looking for in a college.

“I wanted a school that provided a unique academic atmosphere,” says the public policy and English double major, with concentrations in technology and creative writing. “Whether it’s going into office hours, talking after class, or even just chatting as we pass on the Quad, the relationships I have built with my professors have certainly been special.”

As a public policy major, he works closely with Professor of Public Policy and Political Science Craig Rimmerman. “My courses have been incredible, but Professor Rimmerman’s “Democracy and Public Policy” course opened up my mind to new areas of study,” he says.

Salter ’86, P’15 told us that you have to give a part of yourself to a place in order to call it home,” says Oliveira.

“It’s a sentiment that I’ve kept in the back of my head here every day at HWS.” As co-head of the Hobartones a capella group, member of the Chimera Honor Society, student editor of the H Book and former student government president, Oliveira has helped HWS stay true to its roots while shaping his own future. “My involvement on campus has been incredibly enriching and has opened doors to new opportunities.”

As Oliveira reflects on his time at the Colleges, it’s the countless intangible moments that have defined his experience.

“It’s the things that happen in between the lines that begin to color the personality of my time here in Geneva: developing close friendships, late nights rehearsing with the Hobartones in St. John’s Chapel, the rewarding feeling of leaving a class you love to attend, warm fall afternoons sailing out across the lake, sitting up front to listen to Professor of History Clifton Hood lecture, watching the sun set over campus from the top of St. Mark’s Tower, talking with Hobart Associate Dean Chip Capraro about everything from music to history over a long lunch in the faculty dining room,” he says.

“There are few individual instances that defined my career, instead a collection of memories and experiences that have shaped my time here.”

Oliveira hopes that during the final months of his time on campus, he can reenergize the H Book. “If there’s any sentiment I want to leave behind on campus it is that we are all a part of what came before us, but also a part of the living history that we create every day for the Colleges and for ourselves,” he says. “It’s important to preserve and curate our history and culture; it is after all what makes us who we are.” n PHOTO BY KEVIN COLTON

decision. “I was looking for a quality soccer program,” says Jones.

Hobart College turned out to be the right choice. “I came here because of the balance of academics, community and athletics, and it was the best decision of my life,” says Jones, who was a member of the Liberty League All-Academic Team in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

“Since I’ve been here, one amazing opportunity after another has opened doors for me.”

One of those doors opened into Prague, Czech Republic, where Jones spent a semester abroad. “It was one of the most memorable experiences of my entire life,” he says. He traveled throughout Europe and even found the time to run in the Hervis Prague Half Marathon with more than 8,200 other athletes.

Jones has also enjoyed opportunities through Hobart Athletics. He is a Hobart Athletics Liaison for the Stewardson Society, the student director of the Statesmen Athletic Association, and the Liberty League Representative of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee. This semester he is interning with Strength and Conditioning Coach Bobby Fisk in the Raleigh-Foley-Kraus Varsity Strength Training Center. “I’ve also been able to build relationships with Athletic Director Mike Hanna ’68, P’99, HON ’04 and Trustee Tom Poole ’61, P’91, L.H.D. ’06.”

He also works in the Office of Admissions as a tour guide, introducing the Hobart and William Smith campus and community to prospective students and their families. “It may technically be work but I truly enjoy showcasing the school,” he says.

As Jones’ HWS experience draws to a close, he’s been working closely with staff from the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development. Over the past several months, Jones has connected with alums at companies all across the country, including Yahoo!, Octagon, Yelp, the Bozzuto Group and EMC Corporation, where he has interned both in product management and inside sales. “I’m hoping to work in marketing and I know Career Services will aid me the entire way,” he says.

Relationships are, for Jones, what sets HWS apart. “In looking back, it’s the people that differentiate an HWS education,” says Jones. “From Coach Griffin to Professor Rimmerman, it’s the relationships that have defined my experience.” n

Andrew Oliveira ’13 “I can’t walk 10 steps on campus without feeling the weight of history around me,” says Andrew Oliveira ’13, sitting on his bed in his Chi Phi fraternity room. Oliveira has filled his room with what he calls “old Hobart treasures” culled from local antiques shops and eBay. They include a large collection of Hobart postcards, a Hobart commencement program from 1852, a small library of yearbooks dating to the early 20th century, a 1940’s Hobart Glee Club pin, an old Hobart song book, and a variety of other artifacts and documents.

“Whether it’s browsing the pages of old year books or reading the post cards of students from either century, these relics help me understand what it is that I’m a part of,” says Oliveira, an architecture and English double major. “By collecting and unearthing pieces of the Colleges’ heritage, I’ve come to understand and appreciate today’s Hobart and William Smith.”

Colleges to Add Women’s Ice Hockey and Volleyball

H

obart and William Smith Colleges have set in motion plans to expand varsity sport offerings with the addition of women’s ice hockey and women’s volleyball during the next six years.

The two additions will bolster the William Smith athletics lineup to 13 intercollegiate teams. The Colleges anticipate competing as members of the ECAC West for women’s ice hockey and the Liberty League for volleyball.

“The addition of these two varsity sports allows us to respond to a growing desire on the part of our students for greater offerings in women’s athletics,” says Vice President for Student Affairs Robb Flowers. “By adding these sports, we are expanding the Colleges’ ability to draw top students who are seeking an academically rigorous education that includes a strong athletic program with a diversity of offerings.”

Women’s ice hockey has become a collegiate draw over the past decade as more youth leagues have made the sport available to young women. William Smith students

have been playing ice hockey since the early 1980s when an ice hockey club was formed on campus. Since 2004, the club has become very strong, maintaining a roster of more than 20 women who place well among a competitive schedule of teams from Cornell, Oswego, Geneseo, Syracuse, St. Lawrence, and others.

The Herons anticipate joining the competitive ECAC West, which includes schools such as Elmira, Plattsburgh State, Neumann and Buffalo State.

Since the first NCAA women’s volleyball championships were played in 1981, volleyball has become increasingly popular with an estimated 46 million Americans playing the sport. From 1962 through 1974, volleyball was a varsity sport at William Smith. Today, it is one of the highest participation intramural sports with approximately 90 William Smith participants each year. In the Liberty League, the Herons will compete against a slate of highly competitive teams, including Skidmore, Clarkson, Vassar and RIT.

“We have long known that student-

athletes are among the most academically accomplished and civically engaged on our campus,” says President Mark D. Gearan. “As we prepare to launch these two new sports, we are also launching new opportunities for our students to take on leadership roles and to learn the lessons of teamwork and time management that are inherent in athletic competition.”

The average grade point average of William Smith student-athletes is 3.4. During the 201112 academic year, Hobart and William Smith athletes earned 154 all-academic awards at the conference, regional and national levels.

“This is an incredible time to be a Heron,” says William Smith Athletic Director Deb Steward. “With such a long history of participation in ice hockey and volleyball at the club and intramural levels, we are eager to see our two new teams achieve varsity status and to join the culture of success that defines William Smith athletics.”

The search for an ice hockey head coach is underway. This marks the Colleges’ first addition to its intercollegiate athletic programs since the Herons added golf during the 200304 academic year. Ice hockey and volleyball will join William Smith’s basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, sailing, soccer, squash, swimming and diving, and tennis teams.

Since William Smith teams began competing in the early 1970s, the Herons have enjoyed notable intercollegiate success.

The Herons’ 11 varsity teams have received 133 invitations to NCAA or other postseason competition that have resulted in six national championships, 13 second place finishes and 18 third place finishes as well as six ECAC Championships and 44 Liberty League championships. William Smith boasts some of the finest student-athletes in the nation.

Collectively they have earned 235 All-America awards and 340 All-Region Awards. Since 2000, 17 student-athletes have been named to the prestigious Capital One Academic AllAmerican Teams, several more have earned Academic All-District honors while dozens have been listed on their conference’s academic honor roll. n

Hockey Trio Honored For the first time in Hobart hockey history, three Statesmen earned a spot on the American Hockey Coaches Association All-America teams. Goalie Nick Broadwater ’13 garnered first team honors, defenseman Brad Richard ’13 second team, and forward Frank Salituro ’13 third team. Broadwater is just the third Statesman to earn first team honors on the ice, joining Keith Longo ’09 and Matt Wallace ’11.

Overall eight Statesmen have earned nine All-America awards.

Broadwater finished his collegiate career with a record-breaking senior campaign. He eclipsed the Hobart season marks for goals against average (1.66), save percentage (.939), and shutouts (4).

Broadwater’s 15 wins in net this year rank second in Hobart history.

He led the league and was second in the nation in GAA and second in both the league and the nation in save percentage. A three-time All-ECAC West selection, Broadwater sits first on the Hobart career lists for shutouts (11) and GAA (2.25) and ranks second in wins (45), saves (2,275) and save percentage (.927).

A two-year captain, and four-time All-ECAC West honoree, Richard was named the 2012-13 ECAC West Defensive Player of the Year. He anchored a defense that ranked first in the conference and fifth in the nation, allowing an average of just 1.85 goals per game.

Richard played in 20 games, and recorded four goals and seven assists. He logged game-winning goals against Geneseo and Elmira.

In 97 career games, Richard registered 22 goals and 42 assists for 64 points. He garnered ECAC West All-USCHO.com honors twice and was named to the ECAC West All-Tournament team after helping the Statesmen to their second ever ECAC West Tournament title in 2012.

A co-captain and All-ECAC West first team selection, Salituro played in all 26 games and led Hobart with 31 points (14g,17a). He tied for first in the nation with nine power-play goals. Salituro was second in the league in points and goals. He notched the gamewinning goals against Cortland and Nazareth. Salituro garnered All-ECAC West honorable mention and was named to the ECAC West All-USCHO.com second team in 2011-12. He completed his career with 36 goals and 38 assists for 74 points.

Nationally ranked throughout the season, Hobart finished the year with a 19-5-2 overall record and an 11-3-1 mark in the ECAC West, sharing the conference regular season title. Only two teams in Statesmen history recorded more wins than this year’s team.

Thompson and Bonney Dominate It was another banner year for the Hobart basketball team. The Statesmen recorded their fourth straight winning season, third straight 20-win season, and captured both the Liberty League’s regular season and tournament championships. Between Jan. 22 and Feb. 23, Hobart won a school record 13 consecutive games. The Statesmen will also carry a 12game home court win streak into the 2013-14 season.

Leading the charge was the highly Stefan Thompson ’13 decorated duo of guard Stefan Thompson ’13 and forward Richie Bonney ’14.

Thompson’s impressive resume includes the first National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America award in Hobart history (second team) and the first appearance by a Statesman in the Reese’s Division III College All-Star Game. A twotime All-East pick by both the NABC and D3hoops.com and a fourtime All-Liberty League selection, he is just the third Hobart player to capture the Liberty League Player of the Year award.

Bonney netted second team All-East praise from both the NABC and D3hoops.com. He also became the first Hobart basketball student-athlete voted to the Capital One Academic All-America first team. Derek Dominici ’87 is the only other Hobart cager to receive Academic All-America recognition, earning honorable mention in 1986.

Thompson was second on the team in scoring this season, averaging 15.6 ppg. He led the Liberty League in assists (150), assists per game (5.4), and assist-to-turnover (2.3). Thompson reached double digits in the scoring column in 21 of 28 games, netting a career-high 30 points in a double overtime win against Union.

Thompson is the only player in Hobart history to score more than 1,000 points and record more than 400 assists. He’s second in career assists with 492 and fourth in career points with 1,643.

Like Thompson, Bonney was a unanimous first team All-Liberty League selection. He averaged 19.5 ppg and 8.7 rpg, second in the league in both categories. Bonney›s .624 field goal percentage broke the Hobart season record, led the Liberty League and ranks 12th in the nation. He scored a career-high 40 points in a win at Rensselaer, the most points scored by any player in the conference this year. Bonney produced 22 points and a career-high 19 rebounds at 13th-ranked Rhode Island College in the first round of the NCAA tournament, a 62-59 overtime loss for the Statesmen.

In 85 career games, Bonney has accumulated 1,147 points (14th on the all-time list) and 633 rebounds.

D’Addario Receives NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship William Smith Heron Emily D’Addario ’13 was one of just 29 female fall sport studentathletes across all three NCAA divisions to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

D’Addario is just the 10th Heron studentathlete to receive the prestigious scholarship.

A soccer player in her first two years at William Smith, D’Addario switched to cross country in her junior year due to an injury.

Despite having never run cross country, she became one of the most outstanding runners Emily D’Addario ’13 in Heron history. D’Addario won her first three races and finished her career with a total of nine victories. She set course records on five different occasions. D’Addario garnered All-Liberty League cross country honors twice and was named the 2011 Liberty League Cross Country Rookie of the Year. She earned USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region honors and became just the second Heron ever to run in the NCAA Division III National Championship.

“This scholarship is a wonderful way to be recognized for my hard work in both academics and athletics,” said D’Addario, who will receive a grant of $7,500 to continue her education by pursing a master’s degree in speech language pathology. The health sciences major has also received numerous academic honors. She was a threetime Liberty League All-Academic selection and earned a spot on the 2011 Capital One Academic All-District team. D’Addario was also named a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree in 2011 and 2012. n

The Hobart lacrosse program has been placed on probation by the NCAA for self-reported violations involving ineligible participation, failure to maintain squad lists, and lack of institutional control.

The penalties include: public reprimand and censure; three years of probation through January 5, 2014; designated Colleges’ employees will attend an NCAA Regional Rules Seminar; vacation of wins from 2006; postseason ban for the 2011 season; a monetary fine; and external review of Hobart’s compliance system.

I’m up in Geneva for a quick weekend visit, wishing you all were back here with me! New York City is certainly a hotspot for HWS Alums. Mackenzie Leukart is living in NYC while pursuing dual master’s degree in historic preservation and architecture at Columbia University. Kiersten Hamilton also calls NYC home and has been working diligently at Bank of America since last June. Meghan Brooks and Carrie Stevens both began new jobs in the Big Apple. Stevens is working for a fitness magazine and Brooks is an account assistant at Greater Than One, a digital communications agency. Caley Goldblatt also joins the NYC crowd as a charting and trafficking coordinator at JCDecaux, one of the world’s largest outdoor advertising corporations.

Further upstate, Colleen O’Hara is busy working for the New York State Department of Labor as a labor services representative.

While Christina Hom is enjoying her time as an instructor at Wings Over Water: School of Swimming in Brewster, N.Y. Far, far away from New York, Courtney Good is settling into life on the West Coast and is now an admissions counselor at UC Santa Barbara.

She is working with undergraduate admissions and is in charge of merit scholarships.

Caroline Dosky and Hannah Hood have both been accepted into Teach for America.

Congratulations! That’s all the news for now. I certainly don’t expect to see much sunshine when I return back to Ireland, but I hope you all start to see some wherever you are! If anyone makes the jump across the pond for a visit, be sure to let me know.

Hobart W. Thomas Sprentall ’38, of Canandaigua, N.Y., died on Sept. 24, 2012. William earned his B.A. in economics from Hobart, where he was a member of the Delta Psi Omega fraternity and the Board of Control. He went on to become a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Following the war, William worked at Eastman Kodak Company, retiring in 1981.

He is predeceased by his wife, Lillian; son, William; and brother, H. Robert Sprentall ’36. He is survived by his children, Patricia, John, Curtis, Dede, Tracey and Lisa; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and cousin, Edward T. Hanley ’51.

Sylvester J. Zicari ’39, of Rochester, N.Y., died on Nov. 4, 2012. He received his B.A. from Hobart, where he participated in boxing, lacrosse, the Intramural Board, and the Schola Cantorum. Upon graduating, Sylvester went on to form his own accounting firm, S.J. Zicari & Co. He also served a term as Irondequoit Town Councilman in the late 1960s. He is predeceased by his granddaughter, Nancy. He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Lucille; children, Bruce and Craig; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and brother, James.

Charles M. Abbott ’41, of Lancaster, N.Y., died on Nov. 7, 2012. Charles graduated from Hobart with a B.A in chemistry. He was a member of the Phi Phi Delta fraternity, and also was a member of the Newman Club and lacrosse team. Following his time at Hobart, Charles worked in various wartime defense industries. After the war, he was employed as an adhesives technician at Pierce and Stevens, Inc., in Buffalo, N.Y. In 1951, Charles was recalled to active duty in the U.S. Air Force and served for a year in Japan and Korea. As an alumnus, he was a class correspondent. He is predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and daughter, Mary. He is survived by his children, Charles, Thomas and Louise.

Frederick A. Tanner ’41, of Cayuga, N.Y., died on Nov. 19, 2012. Frederick served as an engineer in the U.S. Army, working for the Petroleum Distribution Company in New York City, before graduating from Hobart with a B.S. in chemistry. He then went on to establish a successful career as a chemist, working for Allied Chemical & Dye Corporation in Syracuse, N.Y. He capped off his career at Drainage and Sanitation in Onondaga, N.Y. He is predeceased by his wife, June.

Robert B. Windsor ’41, of Canandaigua, N.Y., died on Dec. 2, 2012. Robert graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in science

and went on to receive a Ph.D. in physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Later, he taught at Johns Hopkins University and also was involved in defense work at Westinghouse, RCA and MITRE Corporation.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucy; nephew, Kenneth and his wife, Susan, and their children, Christopher, Erin, and Laura; and Jonathan R. Pulver ’01.

The Rev. A. Royston Cochran ’42, P’73, P’79, GP’09, GP’14, of Wakefield, R.I., died on Sept. 17, 2012. Roy graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in sociology. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa fraternity, and also was an active participant in band, the Christian Association, and Chimera.

Upon graduating, he went on to study at the Virginia Theological Seminary, Brown University, and Boston University. An avid community activist, Roy volunteered for the AARP Tax Aide Program, served on the Seniors Helping Seniors Board, North Kingstown and Exeter F.I.S.H, and Meals on Wheels. He served at many churches in the Boston area, including the Christ Church in Cambridge, Mass.; Trinity Church in Pawtucket, Mass.; and served as the interim Rector of the Church of Ascension in Wakefield, Mass.

He is predeceased by his wife, Catherine.

He is survived by his children Janet, John B. Cochran ’73, Catherine A. Cochran ’79; his stepchildren, Thomas, William, and Mary; and grandchildren, Emma M. Cochran ’09 and Bryson Z. Cochran ’14.

Edward E. Harrison ’43, of Aventure, Fla., died on Nov. 10, 2012. During his two years at Hobart, Edward was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity and a member of the football, lacrosse, and ski teams. Following his time on campus, he went on to join the U.S. Air Corps during World War II. Edward is the former president and treasurer of the Coulter and MacKensie Machine Co. Edward also founded the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation in 1967 and served as its director. He was a member of the Bridgeport Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his volunteer and financial contributions to the club.

Edward was active in many other volunteer services. He served as a class correspondent for the Colleges. He is predeceased by his first wife, Jane Maddever Harrison ’41. He is survived by his wife, Myrna; and sister, Eleanor Harrison Smith ’44.

Charles D. Snyder ’46, of Penfield, N.Y., died on Dec. 27, 2012. Charles attended Hobart for three years where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. A veteran of World War II, Charles served in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; children, Sheryl, Judith, Charles and Todd; and two grandchildren.

Irwin F. Fredman ’48, M.A.’51, of New York, N.Y., died on Nov. 26, 2012. Irwin earned his B.A. in English, and later his M.A., from Hobart, where he was the president of the Delta Psi Omega fraternity. He also was the president of the Temple Club, a member of Little Theatre, served on the Board of Control, wrote for The Herald, was a member of the International Relations Club and an editor of the Hobart Review. Upon graduating, he went on to become an instructor at HWS, teaching courses in western civilization. He then spent 20 years working in advertising.

As a devoted volunteer, Irwin served as chair of Great Neck United Fund and president of the Putnam County Libraries Association. In 1996, he was named Trustee of the Year for New York State Libraries. He is predeceased by his wife, Alice. He is survived by his daughters, Lisa and Catherine; and nephew, Ethan E. Neuburg ’79.

Charles A. Lininger ’48, of Miami, Fla., died on Oct. 30, 2012. At Hobart, Charles majored in economics and political science, and was a member of Gamma Omicron Tau. He later earned a master’s degree in political science and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago. He held a career working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. As an alumnus, he served as a class correspondent and a career counseling volunteer. Charles is survived by his wife of 27 years, Melody A. Trott; three children; and four grandchildren.

Gregory J. Magratten ’48, of Pinehurst, N.C., died on Jan. 16, 2013. At Hobart, Greg majored in economics, was a Sigma Chi brother, and a member of the Board of Control, Newman Club, basketball team and Intramural Board. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946 aboard the USS Papago in Pearl Harbor and the Atlantic. He also attended Columbia University for graduate studies. Greg was senior partner in the Wellisch/Magratten Agency for 34 years. He also served on the boards of Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and Myers Community Hospital, and was a senior warden in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Newark, N.Y. Greg is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Russell Magratten ’50; children, Gary, Darcy and Brooks; three granddaughters; and relative, John M. Nolan ’04.

James B. Huftalen ’49, of Hendersonville, N.C., died on Jan. 3, 2013. James graduated with a B.S. in biology and chemistry, and later earned a M.A. from Syracuse University. He also attended the Citadel, and served in European Theater in the U.S. Army.

James worked as a research scientist for 36 years for Bristol Myers in Syracuse, N.Y. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Inez; children, Jean, James, David, Judith, Richard and Susan; 16 grandchildren; and 16 greatgrandchildren.

Vito L. Misiti ’49, of Medina, N.Y., died on Aug. 25, 2012. Vito graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in mathematics. Prior to his enrollment at Hobart, he served as a medical attendant in the U.S. Army for three years.

Vito went on to become a math teacher. He is survived by his wife, Louise.

Harry P. Ruske Jr. ’50, of Pittsford, N.Y., died on Nov. 13, 2012. Upon graduating high school, Harry entered the U.S. Navy during World War II. He went on to study sociology and economics for three years at Hobart, where he was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and the Glee Club. Harry spent his career working for Gannett as a circulation manager. Upon retirement, he took up school bus driving in the Pittsford Central School District until he was 80. As an active community and church member, he volunteered to drive for Elderberry Express, Meals on Wheels and the Open Door Mission. He also served as a Pittsford Village Trustee. In September 2012, Harry took part in a veterans honor flight to visit the nation’s capital and monuments. Harry is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pat; children, Nancy, Ross and Paul; and four grandchildren.

Otto G. Berk Jr. ’51, of New York, N.Y., died on Dec. 21, 2012. Otto graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in economics. He was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity, the sophomore class vice president and played for the lacrosse team. An active participant in campus activities, Otto also was a member of Druids, Chimera, Board of Controls, Orange Key, Echo and Pine, and was on the Dean’s List. Following his time at Hobart, Otto served as the president of Haywood-Berk Floor Company. He also was a longtime member of the N.Y.A.C. Otto is

Philip J. Christ ’51, of Aptos, Calif., died on Aug. 31, 2012. Philip received a B.A. in economics from Hobart and was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity, where he was the house manager. He was a member of the sailing team and played lacrosse. He also participated in Canterbury Club, yacht club, Schola Cantorum, and was a class historian.

After graduating, Philip served as a U.S. Army lieutenant during the Korean War and saw extensive combat. Following his military service, he worked for the New York Telephone Company where he was district manager and held various other management positions. In his retirement, Philip served as a commissioner for the Santa Cruz County Fish and Game Commission and as the master of ceremonies for an entertainment company for seniors. As an alumnus, he served as an admissions volunteer. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jean; daughter, Julia; stepchildren, Melissa and Michael; four grandchildren; cousin, Jean Hughes Terhune ’54; in-law, E. Robert Terhune ’55; and niece, Elizabeth Bernard Khalifa ’78.

Pieter P. de Kadt ’51, of South Norwalk, Conn., died on Dec. 25, 2012. Pieter graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in economics.

On campus, he was a member of the Sigma Phi fraternity and received an Alumni Association Award. Pieter also was a member of the football team, The Herald, the Intramural Council and Kappa Beta Phi. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army, spending two years in Alaska during the Korean War. In 1968, Pieter founded de Kadt Marketing & Research, Inc. in Greenwich, Conn.

He led the company for 33 years, until his retirement in 2001 when he became chair emeritus. As an alumnus, Pieter served as a volunteer for the Campaign for the Colleges, a class agent from 1956 to 1959, the gift chair of the 40th Reunion from 1990 to 1991, and as treasurer and program chair of the Hobart Club of New York. In 2006, he received an Alumni Citation. He is survived by his children, Sharon, David, and John; two grandchildren; his companion, Elizabeth Shiller, and her sons, Jim and Pete; and his sister, Mathilde Rica VanPerlstein ’46.

Lawrence D. Urban ’51, of Buffalo, N.Y., died on Dec. 19, 2012. He graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in history and economics.

He was a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and was involved in Canterbury Club and the Young Republicans Club. As a dedicated alumnus, Lawrence served the HWS Buffalo Club. He retired from Urban Rent-All, where he had been the owner and manager. He is predeceased by his uncle, William P. Urban 1914. Lawrence is survived by his brother, Raymond and sister-in-law Elizabeth; nephews; great-nieces; and several cousins.

Frederick L. Davis ’52, of Buffalo, N.Y., died on Jan. 7, 2013. He earned a B.A. in economics from Hobart, where he was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity.

At the Colleges, he was a member of Canterbury Club and Kappa Beta Phi. Following his college years, Frederick, who went by the nickname “Spider,” would go on to become an executive of several Buffalo industrial supply firms. He also served as president of S & B Industrial Sales Inc., from which he retired. An avid sailor, Frederick enjoyed racing and cruising sailboats in the Great Lakes and Caribbean. He was the director of the Buffalo Yacht Club and rear commodore of the Buffalo Canoe Club. As an alumnus, he

was a member of the Hobart Club of Buffalo. Frederick is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Bredfeld Davis ’53. He is survived by his children, Peter and Lissa.

The Rev. C. Leland Udell ’52, of Shelburne, Vt., died on Dec. 29, 2012. Leland graduated cum laude in English from Hobart where he participated in Phi Beta Kappa and served as president of the Outing Club. He later earned a M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary and was ordained an Episcopal deacon. Throughout his career, he served as chaplain in several New York City hospitals and as first director of clinical pastoral education at Fletcher-Allen Hospital in Vermont. He also hosted a weekly show, “Struggles of the Spirit,” on the Burlington area public access television station. Leland is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susanne; and children, Lili and Nathaniel.

W. Lee Highmore Jr. ’53, P’89, GP’08, of New London, Conn., died on Oct. 9, 2012.

Elected to Delta Chi, Wilson graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in economics.

On campus, he was an active member of Canterbury Club, St. John’s Guild and band. Following graduation, he served as a captain in the U.S. Army. Wilson went on to work as a sales manager for 50 years before retiring in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Mary Moest Highmore ’56; daughters, Mary Sue, Anne, Elizabeth and Sarajane Highmore Schmidt ’89; and seven grandchildren, including Lee Highmore Dickinson ’08 and relative, Judith Haslam Cross ’52, P’85, L.H.D.’00.

Lysle R. MacKeraghan ’53, of Casselberry, Fla., died on Jan. 6, 2013. Lysle graduated with a B.A. in English. On campus, he was a member of Kappa Sigma and a member of The Herald. He went on to earn a M.B.A. in marketing from Rollins College, an Ed.D. in educational administration from the University of Florida. Lysle retired as an educational specialist with the U.S. Navy.

As an alumnus, he was a career counseling volunteer. Lysle is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary; children, Deborah, Karen and Lysle Jr. David S. Newman ’53, of Pittsford, N.Y., died on Nov. 16, 2012. David earned his B.A. in biology and chemistry from Hobart, where he was a member of the Phi Phi Delta fraternity. He also was a member of the Temple Club, Echo, and wrote for The Herald. He went on to graduate from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, and practiced dentistry in Rochester for 44 years. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Lynda; and children, Lisa, Jackie and Michael.

Wesley H. Hayes ’54, of Lake City, Fla., died on March 16, 2011. Wesley graduated from Hobart with a B.A. and was a member of the band.

John B. Rees Jr. ’54, of Athens, Ga., died on Sept. 26, 2012. John graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in English. While at Hobart, he served as secretary and vice president of the Sigma Phi fraternity. He also was a member of the Debate Team, WEOS, “The Pot,” and was on the Dean’s List. Following his time at Hobart, John went on to receive his J.D. from University of Virginia Law School. He spent 45 years at the University of Georgia as a professor of law, winning several awards for his excellence as an educator, including the 1997 Distinguished Service Scroll Award from the UGA Law School Association. As an active member of the community, John helped the

St. Joseph School in Athens weather a period of crisis in the late 1960s by assisting them through a troubling financial period.

He is survived by his wife Elinor; children, John, Mary, Jenifer, David and Richard; and four grandchildren.

Douglas D. Fenn ’56, of Charlottesville, Va., died on Oct. 5, 2012. As an honors student, Douglas graduated from Hobart with a B.A in philosophy. On campus, he was a member of the Canterbury Club, Phi Beta Kappa, AFROTC, a sports editor for The Herald, and was on the Dean’s List. In 1956, following graduation, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and began his career as a meteorologist with the Air Weather Service. Douglas worked in meteorology for the remainder of his career, coauthoring several hydrometeorological reports for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As an alumnus, he served as a special gifts volunteer. Douglas is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan; and children, Katy and Andrew.

Stephen H. Karelitz ’56, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died on Nov. 26, 2012. Stephen graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in economics. On campus, he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, captain of the golf team, a member of Echo and Pine and French Club, the business manager of WEOS, and a member of Orange Key. Stephen went on to establish a successful career in the investment industry. He landed his first job as an account executive with Hornblower & Weeks. Later, he served as senior vice president of Shearson Loeb Rhoades, Inc. Stephen was very charitable, contributing significantly to the Haverhill Public Library, Boys Club of America, UJA, CJP, and The Salvation Army. He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, William and Neal.

Joseph C. Mason Jr.’59, of Laceyville, Pa., died on Dec. 16, 2012. Joseph served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy before attending Hobart for four years. On campus, he majored in psychology and participated in St. John’s Guild and Canterbury Club.

Joseph held a career as a salesman working for R.T. French Co., Lily Tulip, Pennsylvania Life Insurance Company, and several sporting goods companies. He was an instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission, a member of the American Legion, and past chaplain and member of the LaSociete Des in Bradford, Sullivan and Wyoming counties.

He was predeceased by his wife of 29 years, Charlotte, and a daughter, Tiffany. He was formerly married to Mary Wilson Mason ’59.

He is survived by his children, Joseph, Anne and Elizabeth; step-children, Laurie, Patty, Michael and Joseph; and several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

J. Trumbull Rogers ’61, of New York City, N.Y., died on Sept. 4, 2012. Trumbull earned a B.A. in English from Hobart, where he was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. On campus, he was a member of the Honorary Literary Fraternity and was editor of the Hobart Review. Upon graduating, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserve, with two years of active service mostly on the USS Thor. Following his military service, Trumbull began an editing career with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Later, he would serve as one of four copy editors for “The Random House Dictionary of English Language, Second Edition, Unabridged.” His copy editing work includes the writings of Stephen Hawking, James Michener, and Sylvia Porter, among others. In 1977, he joined the Editorial Freelancers Association, serving in various leadership roles, including on its Board

of Governors. His passion for supporting aspiring and new copy editors, includes the publication of his book, “Editorial Freelancing: A Practical Guide” (1995). Trumbull is survived by his siblings, Grace and Danforth; several nieces and nephews; ex-wife, Marian; step-daughters, Rebecca and Christy; and two step-grandchildren.

Dr. Raymond G. Endreny ’66, of Providence, R.I., died on Oct. 11, 2012. Raymond graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in European history. He was active in many campus activities, including Echo and Pine, Interfraternity Council, The Herald, and was a member of the swim and crew teams. He also was a member of Sigma Chi. Raymond continued his education at Columbia University and went on to receive his M.D. from Hahnemann Medical School in Philadelphia, Pa. As a committed physician, he practiced nephrology with Nephrology Associates in East Providence for 34 years where he was loved and respected by his patients and colleagues. Raymond is survived by his wife of 39 years, Patricia; children Danielle, Matthew and Michael; and three grandchildren.

Frank H. Frissell ’66, of Cape Coral, Fla., died on Jan. 9, 2013. Frank earned his B.A. in psychology from Hobart. Following his time at Hobart, Frank went on to work as a medical technologist, as well as a pharmaceutical representative for Sandoz Pharmaceuticals. Later, he became a realtor and certified residential appraiser, working at several real estate companies, including Frissell Realty. As an alumnus, he served as a career counseling volunteer. He is survived by two daughters, Carrie and Kristen; and six grandchildren.

Evan Kalenik ’73, of Belle Mead, N.J., died on Oct. 2, 2011. Evan graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in political science and was a member of WEOS. After graduating, he earned a M.B.A. in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Evan worked in New Jersey as a purchasing manager for Johnson & Johnson, Sterling Drugs and Ciba-Geigy, as well as an instructor with IBM. With a deep passion for the Russian Orthodox religion, Evan was a former parishioner of Saints Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, Orthodox Christian Fellowship Chapel of the Transfiguration at Murray Dodge Hall at Princeton University, and was a founding member of Our Lady, Mother of God, the Joy of All Who Sorrow Church. In 1986, he was knighted by the Order of the Knights of Malta. Evan is predeceased by his sister, Paula Kalenik ’71. He is survived by his aunt, Marilyn; uncle, Harry; and loving cousins.

Stephen J. Rhodes ’75, of Houston, Texas, died on July 26, 2012. Stephen graduated with a B.A in anthropology and sociology from Hobart. He went on to earn his M.B.A. from University of North Florida. Stephen established a career as a consultant in the relocation management field. As an alumnus, he served as a career services volunteer. He is survived by his son, Joseph; mother, Patricia; and sister, Diane Rhodes Warner ’77.

David Lee Arnoff ’82, of Kensington, Md., died on Sept. 21, 2012. David graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in political science.

On campus, he was a dedicated member of the sailing team. Upon graduating, David landed his first job as a law clerk in New York City. He then went on to establish a career in information technology, working in the field for the remainder of his professional career. David is survived by his wife, Melissa; and sister, Robin.

Obituaries Courtney R. Smith ’84, of Geneva, N.Y., died on Dec. 23, 2012. Courtney attended Hobart College and Finger Lakes Community College. He worked as a firefighter for the Geneva Fire Department and was very active with the Hydrant Hose Co. No. 1. He served on its board of directors in 1986, and again, in 2006 through 2010. Courtney is survived by his wife, Susan; his parents, Raymond and Charlene; sisters Carolyn and Marcia; and his companion of the last few years, Beth.

Eugene D. Starr Jr. ’85, of New York, N.Y., died on Nov. 21, 2012. He graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in political science. On campus, Eugene was a member of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. Eugene went on to become founder and chief executive officer of E.D. Starr & Company, an executive search firm for the management consulting and financial services industries. Prior to that, he held various recruitment positions at RareMedium Inc. and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Eugene was an active member of the Union League Club and Hudson fam. He also volunteered for Achilles International. As an alumnus, he served as a career counseling volunteer. He is survived by his brothers and sisters, including Maryanne Starr-Garber ’91; nephews; and many friends.

William Smith Jean Gray Micks ’42, of Northfield, Vt., died on Feb. 19, 2010. Jean earned her B.A. in modern languages from William Smith, where she was involved in many activities, including Student Council, Debate Team, International Relations Club, yearbook and Delta Phi Alpha. Leading a life dedicated to service, she was an active volunteer in the community and displayed her passion and love for animals by supporting the SPCA. Jean also was a longtime environmentalist.

She was a bibliophile and supporter of the Brown Public Library in Northfield. She is predeceased by her husband, Philip R. Micks ’38. She is survived by her nephew Robert and his wife, Earlene; two grandnephews; sister in-law, Claudia; and several dear friends.

Ann Winn Bacon ’45, of North Haven, Conn., died on Nov. 10, 2012. Ann earned her B.A. in business administration from William Smith, where she was a member of the field hockey team, worked for The Herald, participated in the Outing Club, and served as freshman class president. She was a librarian at the North Haven Memorial Library and was a longtime volunteer for the Friends of the North Haven Library. Ann also volunteered as a docent at the Yale Peabody Museum and was a member of the Spring Garden Club. Every year, Ann spent part of the summer in Deer Isle, Maine, at the Winn family homestead, “The Larches.” On the island, she volunteered at Chase Emerson Memorial Library. As an alumna, she served as a class agent from 1972-1990, a reunion volunteer, newsletter editor and was part of the Connecticut chapter of William Smith.

She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas; sister, Barbara Winn Long ’50; and aunt, Marcia W. Winn L.H.D. ’70. Ann is survived by her sons, John and Wilson; two daughter-inlaws, Carol and Leslie; and grandchildren Julie, Scott and Neil.

Joyce Tooley March ’52, of Watertown, N.Y., died on Sept. 17, 2012. Following her time spent at William Smith, Joyce went on to receive her teaching degree at Potsdam State Teachers College. She worked as a thirdgrade teacher at Indian River Central School,

and a reading specialist and vice principal at the Evan Mills Elementary School. After 32 years of teaching, Joyce retired in 1985.

She is predeceased by her brother, Jack.

She is survived by her son, Michael; two grandsons and a great-grandson.

Irene Ssu-Chin Hou ’55, of Silver Spring, Md., died on June 25, 2012. Irene graduated from William Smith with a B.A in home economics. She had studied traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy since 1970, becoming a successful and widely acclaimed painter. Her instructors included some of China’s most renowned artists, such as Masters Chang Ku-nien, Hu Ko-min, Yu Chang-lin, Chen Tze-lo and Chen Chichuan. Irene had successful exhibitions of her work in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Taipei, Taiwan.

She was instructor of Chinese Painting at the School of Art, Munson-WilliamsProctor Institute and a volunteer bilingual tour guide at the National Palace Museum, Taipei, Taiwan. She also authored “The Chinese Paintings of Irene Hou” volumes I, II and III. As an alumna, she served as an admissions volunteer. She is predeceased by her husband, Chi-ming Hou. Billie Horton Campalans ’58, P’87, of Henderson, N.Y., died on Nov. 5, 2012.

Billie is predeceased by her husband and Kappa Alpha sweetheart, Luis M. Campalans ’56. She is survived by her sons, Luis M. Campalans Jr. ’87 and Alfonso; and four grandchildren.

Nancy-Page Perkins Harvey ’59, of Dennis, Mass., died on Jan. 18, 2013.

“Page,” as she has always been known by her HWS friends, graduated from William Smith with a B.A. in anthropology. She was enthusiastically involved in campus activities, including: member of the Athletic Association, WEOS, Little Theatre and the Young Republican Club. In addition, she was photography editor of The Pine and captain of cheerleaders her senior year. Following graduation, Page briefly worked in the fashion industry before meeting her husband. Over the years, she often volunteered and was active in Beta Sigma Phi and the Cooley Dickinson Hospital Auxiliary, as well as serving as a Girl Scout leader.

On Cape Cod, Page was involved in D.A.R. and the Village Garden Club of Dennis. She enjoyed cooking and loved entertaining. As an animal lover, Page and her husband had a menagerie, including German Shepherds and Irish Wolfhounds, (one who rang the front doorbell when she wanted to enter the house). As an alumna, Page served as class agent for several years. She is sorely missed by many classmates who have remained in close touch with her since college days. Page is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Wendyll Caisse; sons, Todd and Kurt; two daughters-in-law; one son-in-law; and six grandchildren.

M. Sandra Morse ’63, of Timonium, Md., died in Dec. 2012. Sandy graduated from William Smith with a bachelor of science in mathematics. She participated in Motet Choir, Schola Cantorum, William Smith Athletic Association and served as treasurer of Class Council and president of Psychology Club. Sandy also played on the hockey, swimming, tennis, volleyball, basketball, ski and lacrosse teams. She later earned a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University, and worked as director of financial aid at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. As an alumna, she served on the President’s Alumni Advisory Conference and as an admissions volunteer.

Carol Bettinger Porter ’65, of Ridgeland, S.C., died on June 22, 2011. Carol studied at William Smith for two years before earning a B.A. in medieval history from the University of Illinois in 1966. She went on to work as a consultant for Carson, Pirie, Scott & Co. Nancy Bernkopf Tucker ’70, of Potomac, Md., died on Dec. 1, 2012. Graduating from William Smith with a B.A. in history, Nancy was greatly involved in extracurricular activities on campus. She was a member of Colloquium, The Herald, the International Relations Club, and William Smith Congress.

She also served as the chair of the Student Academic Affairs Committee and a student representative for the Faculty Academic Affairs Committee. In the classroom, Nancy’s efforts earned her a place on the Dean’s List all four years and a place in Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Gamma Mu, where she had served as president. She also was awarded the John Milton Potter Prize for a distinguished academic record in humanities, the Pi Gamma Mu Memorial Scholarship, and highest honors in history. Her outstanding academic achievements earned her a spot in the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”

In 1986, she was awarded (along with Condoleezza Rice) the Council on Foreign Relations Fellowship, which enabled her to serve on the China Desk of the Department of State and in the American Embassy in Beijing, 1986-87. Nancy went on to become an authority on U.S. diplomatic relations with Taiwan and China and a professor of history at Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. She was the nation’s first Assistant Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Analytic Integrity and Standards, a post she held in 2006 and 2007 while on leave from Georgetown. For her service in the intelligence community, Nancy was awarded the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement in 2007. Throughout her career, Nancy wrote hundreds of articles and was the author or editor of eight books, one of which, ‘‘Uncertain Friendships: Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the United States, 1945 to 1992’’ (1994), received an award from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations.

Shortly before her death, Nancy endowed the Nancy Bernkopf Tucker and Warren I. Cohen book series on American-East Asian Relations at Columbia University Press. The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C., has established the Annual Nancy Bernkopf Tucker Memorial Lecture in American-East Asian Relations.

The inaugural lecture will be given April 18, 2013, by Ambassador Winston Lord. Nancy is survived by her husband, Warren Cohen.

As an alumna, she served as a volunteer for career services. She is survived by her children, Brian and Mary; parents, Edwin ’59 and Joyce Dailor; siblings, Pete, Mike and Toni Dailor Greenlee ’82. She was formerly married to Howard B. Matthews ’84.

HWS Community Professor Emeritus Dwight H. Gardiner, of Rochester, N.Y., died on July 16, 2012.

Dwight was a psychology professor at Hobart and William Smith and a member of the HWS faculty for 35 years, serving as head of the Psychology Department and a member of the Committee on Faculty. A gifted and dedicated teacher, he continued to teach at the Colleges after his official retirement. Dwight received his bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees in psychology from the University of Rochester, where he later became an instructor at the Prince Street Women’s Campus. An avid downhill skier and golfer, Dwight was a member of the Geneva Country Club, an assistant at the Genesee Valley Golf Course while a graduate student, and technical director of the Swain Ski School in the 1960s. He also served in World War II in the Navy. He is survived by his life partner, Barbara Evelyn Herr ’66; cousin, Elaine Pugliese, and her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.

Jacqueline A. Forshee ’71, of Chicago, Ill., died on July 16, 2012. She graduated from William Smith with a B.A. in political science.

After graduation, Jacqueline went on to receive her M.A. in political science from the New School for Social Research in 1975. She worked nearly 40 years at Wolters Kluwer, an informational services firm in Chicago. Jacqueline was a passionate, longtime member at the Episcopal Church of the Atonement.

She is survived by her sister Karen Forshee Ford ’73; and beloved dog, Shadow.

Lisa Dailor Matthews ’80, of Pittsford, N.Y., died on Dec. 15, 2012. At William Smith Lisa majored in psychology, and participated in Koshare, Canterbury Association, served as co-chair of Newman Club, treasurer of Amarunth, and as a peer adviser. She was the recipient of the Lenore K. Weinstein Social Services Award. Lisa earned a master’s in rehabilitation counseling from Syracuse

D’Angelo Celebrated at Reunion

T

he late Professor of Music Nicholas V. D’Angelo P’98, HON ’59, has been named as the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Faculty Award (DFA). On Saturday, June 8 during Reunion 2013, D’Angelo will be honored by the Hobart Alumni Association and the William Smith Alumnae Association.

“The selection committee was struck by the overwhelming number of responses from former students who stated Professor D’Angelo was the reason their careers are in music,” says DFA co-chair Julie Bazan D’Angelo ’93 (who is not related to Professor D’Angelo). “So many alums wrote that he was ‘a great role model,’ ‘extremely inspiring’ and ‘he made music come alive.’”

D’Angelo came to the Colleges in 1955, and his career spanned 56 years at Hobart and William Smith. During this time, D’Angelo served as chair of Music Department and led off-campus programs abroad in London. A dedicated member of the HWS and Geneva communities, he was an exemplary leader on several faculty committees and an active member of the regional arts community.

He also founded the Colleges’ jazz ensemble and was instrumental in creating the first National Symposium on Black Music, which was held on campus in 1969.

Born in Erie, Pa., D’Angelo was a veteran of the Korean War as conductor of the Air Force Band. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and went on to receive his master’s from Syracuse University.

Gifted in musical composition, he was the recipient of numerous awards including the First Prize at the New American Music Festival, the Sheena Meeker Memorial Award for a new work for chamber orchestra, the University of Georgia Bicentennial Prize for new chamber work, and the Michigan State University performance award. In 1985, D’Angelo was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in music. He was given the 1976 HWS Faculty Prize for Distinguished Research and Scholarship.

D’Angelo’s compositions have been recorded and played throughout the world, with notable performances in the U.S., Mexico, England, France and Italy. ●

Morrison P’07 and McMahon P’10 Recognized

I

n gratitude for their significant efforts in support of HWS students through the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development, Brian McMahon P’10 and Don Morrison P’07 were presented with the HWS Career Services Award at the New York City holiday gathering on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Both have generously donated their time and expertise to help students make informed career decisions and gain valuable, real-world work experience.

In his son James’ first year at Hobart, McMahon, president and chief executive officer at ORION Holdings, accepted two interns and hired two graduating seniors for full-time employment.

He has served as a Professional in Residence speaker on campus and annually hosts HWS students at his firm as part of the advertising, public relations and media professions days in New York City.

Morrison serves as the U.S. chief operating officer for Brand Programming Network, one of the three worldwide networks within IPG Mediabrands. A valuable resource to career services, Morrison has hosted annual site visits for students as part of advertising, public relations and media professions days, and allowed students to participate in job shadowing opportunities. Last year, he helped with the hiring of a graduating senior. Morrison is a Parents Fund volunteer.

In 2009, the Colleges’ Board of Trustees introduced the Career Services Award to honor and celebrate alumni, alumnae, parents and friends of the Colleges whose commitment and effort through the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Professional Development have transformed the lives of HWS students. Past recipients include Aileen D. Gleason ’85, senior vice president of Global Product Solutions at Bank of America Corp., and Edward J. Brennan P’06, P’09, chief executive officer and chair of DFS Group. ●

Herbert J. Stern ’58, P’03, LL.D. ’74 was sworn in as an attorney at the age of 25, beginning his career as an assistant district attorney in New York City. At 37, he was sworn in as the youngest federal judge in the country. In the time between, he waged a war on corruption and bribery in the State of New Jersey. Among those he prosecuted were a number of members of the mafia, including Angelo “Gyp” DeCarlo (Frank Sinatra’s cousin and now a character in the Tony Award winning Broadway show “Jersey Boys”); Ritchie and Anthony Boiardo and Anthony Russo (all of whom were used as source material for the HBO Series “The Sopranos”); executives of the Colonial Pipeline Company, wholly owned by nine major oil companies; the mayors of Jersey City, Newark, and Atlantic City; a U.S. Congressman; members of the administrations of two successive governors; and the head of the French CIA.

Why did you write this book?

n a career that so far spans 50 years, Honorary Trustee Herbert J. Stern ’58, P’03, LL.D. ’74 has grown from an inexperienced ADA eager to learn from the legal legends in his midst to the man responsible for taking down the mob, corrupt politicians and even the head of the French CIA. And that was all before he became the youngest federal judge in the country. In Diary of a DA: The True Story of the Prosecutor who Took on the Mob, Fought Corruption, and Won, Stern takes readers on the journey that was his early career.

Stern graduated from Hobart with a B.A. in history, and went on to complete his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1961. He was awarded the Hobart Medal of Excellence in 1990, and was lead donor for Stern Hall. He is currently in private practice as a partner and founding member of the law firm of Stern & Kilcullen, in Florham Park, N.J.

Through this book, I wanted to – without lecturing but rather by examples from that time – draw some conclusions for those interested in the way the administration of justice works. Among these conclusions is that you can’t banish human discretion in the process. It doesn’t work.

You tried some dangerous people; were you ever afraid for your life?

No. I was young, in my early 30s, and didn’t believe I was ever going to die. My philosophy was that I was chasing them; they weren’t going to chase me.

What case had the most impact on you?

The bribery case in which we tried executives of The Colonial Pipeline Company. It’s where I learned my craft and where I learned how to investigate. I stumbled along until I figured that out.

What case had the most impact on the people you served?

The destruction of the longstanding political machine in Hudson County, which includes Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and West New York. It was a publicly open joke where even the public employees had to kick back

three percent of their salary. That probably had the greatest impact on the greatest number of lives.

Did you ever stop being surprised by the corruption you found?

I was never surprised that something bad was going on, I was surprised we found it. Whatever we stumbled upon happened after we stuck a pole in the cage and shook things up; we went looking for it.

Why was corruption so prevalent in New Jersey?

The underbelly had seized control. I don’t think you could find anything anywhere else like what we dragged into light in just three or four years.

We were young and in a hurry and we knew time was not our friend so we went at it.

After the extortion-conspiracy trial of Newark Mayor Hugh Addonizio, you said you’d had all the trial work you needed and more. Did you eventually ever miss the trial work?

I was very happy to do the next thing.

Music has always been a big part of my life; I was the pianist for the Colleges chorale while I was a student at William Smith. The Rolling Stones are one of my favorite bands, and no one has lived more than Keith Richards. I appreciate how candidly he relates the events in his life. There is an introspection and self-awareness in his writing that is truly moving and fascinating.

I purchased the book in Istanbul while visiting my son, Jack. The book portrays a Turkish family experiencing the opulence of the Ottoman Empire, the ravages of World War I and II, the ups and downs of economic uncertainty and devastation brought on by historical events that the family neither controlled nor completely understood.

It’s a poignant portrayal of life in 20th century Europe.
