When we started the academic year last August, our goal was to do everything possible to allow for in-person instruction, a hallmark of a Hobart and William Smith education.

YOUR

gift to the Annual Fund allowed the Colleges to do just that, giving us the extra support we needed to ensure the safety of our community. We were able to respond to the immediate needs of students during the pandemic, making sure they were taken care of when they needed it most, so they could focus on their studies and their futures.

The three student stories included in this brochure tell the tangible story of your gift to the Annual Fund. Thank you for helping our students reach new heights.

This past academic year, your support of the Annual Fund helped in so many ways. Here’s a few: • Because of you, 90% of students were able to receive assistance, giving them continued access to an HWS education.

• You gave our extraordinary students the sendoff they deserve by helping to support two Commencements on the Quad - one for the Classes of 2021 and the other for the Classes of 2020 – with all the pomp and circumstance we all know and love.

• Thanks to you, more than 600 students had an internship or research opportunity, some held in person and others completed remotely. Your gift helped provide stipends for unpaid experiences, allowing more students the ability to test out a career path.

• You helped us invest in the health and safety protocols that gave our students an in-person education.

A pandemic was not going to limit her college experience!

EMILY TANG ’24 MAJOR: Will most likely declare biochemistry in her sophomore year YOUR GIFT IMPACT: Emily was the recipient of an Annual Fund scholarship for an academically qualified and financially deserving William Smith student.

This scholarship helped make HWS affordable and solidified Emily’s decision to attend HWS. Annual Fund scholarships help many students realize the dream of a Hobart and William Smith education.

Emily Tang’s first year at Hobart and William Smith was different due to COVID-19. It was harder to make friends and find her footing.

Thanks to supportive professors and classes that were thought-provoking, Emily flourished academically. She made the Dean’s list her first semester.

As a life-long dancer, Emily looks forward to the time when she can perform in Deming Theatre in the Gearan Center for Performing Arts. Until then, she has joined the Kinetic Dance Collective (formerly known as Koshare) to get to know other students and work together to choreograph a performance.

Emily is thankful her scholarship helped make her dream of going to college possible.

Going into her sophomore year, Emily is exploring a biochemistry major. She has always been a good science and math student and hopes to go to medical school after graduating from Hobart and William Smith.

His bright career future started early at HWS. DARIUS BRUMMELL ’21 MAJOR: Double major in Economics and Asian Studies YOUR GIFT IMPACT: Your support of the Annual Fund helps support The Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education. You help make internships possible through the Guaranteed Internship Program and jumpstart careers for ambitious students like Darius.

Darius Brummel ’21 started at Hobart and William Smith eager to explore a career in finance. Right away he tapped into resources at the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education.

He completed two internships before accepting a spot at Citibank’s Early Identification Leadership Program in his sophomore year. In his junior year he participated in the NYC Finance Experience, a four-day immersive networking excursion, and then completed another internship at Citibank as a Summer Analyst. The result of his experiences? A full-time job offer from Citibank at the start of his senior year.

A Dean’s list student, a member of the International Honor Society in Economics and copresident of the HWS Investment Club, he’s enjoyed both his studies and activities at HWS. He studied abroad in Taiwan and set a personal goal to improve his conversational Chinese.

Darius is grateful for all the opportunities you’ve made possible for him at Hobart and William Smith.

Thanks to your gift an average of 60 students spend their summer on campus doing research with a faculty mentor.

Her future protecting and preserving water started at HWS. AMELIA “MIMI” SMITH ’21 MAJOR: Biology YOUR GIFT IMPACT: Your gift to the Annual Fund ensures that The Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education and the Center for Global Education provided opportunities that helped Mimi find her passion.

Amelia “Mimi” Smith ’21 found her calling after taking a first-year biology class. She immersed herself in the aquatic biology field taking every opportunity to learn in the classroom, on the water and at the Colleges’ nearby Hanley Biological Field Preserve.

She completed three water-related internships, one of which was a nationally competitive position at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Internship program as a Summer Student Fellow. Mimi also studied abroad in Queensland, Australia doing hands-on marine biology research on Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.

She completed an Honors research project assessing the lake trout population. There has been a decline in the population of this crucial species in the Finger Lakes and Mimi is trying to find the cause.

Mimi recently landed an internship with the House of Representatives Committee on Natural Resources, where she hopes to affect environmental policy on Capitol Hill. She’s planning to use her HWS education to bridge the gap between water-related research through environmental policy, restoration and community outreach and education.
