Hudson Valley Shakespeare operates on the ancestral homelands of the Lenape, Munsee, and Wappinger people. We gratefully acknowledge their stewardship of this land, in the past and the present.
HVS offers this land acknowledgement as a formal statement to recognize and respect the Indigenous Peoples who are the traditional stewards of the land on which we operate and their enduring relationship with this place.
If you looked towards the river as you entered the HVS campus, you might have spotted the roof of the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center rising on the hill. The dream is quickly becoming a reality. We will be producing a season of plays in the Scripps Center NEXT SUMMER, and we can’t wait to welcome you, our faithful audience, to your magnificent new home. (You can find more information about the new theater on pages 52 and 53 of this program, or join us for one of our “Hard Hat Chats” on Mondays before the show.)
Moving to the Scripps Center next summer means that this season is our last in our beloved tent, our home for almost twenty years. The tent has forever shaped our artistic identity. It feels closer to a pop-up music venue than a Broadway theater. It reminds us of the excitement of the circus coming to town, as it goes up every spring, and comes down every fall. The stage is sand. The actors are literally climbing the columns. A family of raccoons has been known to make themselves at home in it.
Despite all that, or maybe because of it, this tent has also been the occasion for so many unforgettable instances of theatrical magic, sublime moments when the energies of the actors, the audience, and the natural world align in ways that could never be planned or replicated. This summer is our chance to honor the indelible memories we’ve shared under the tent, and to look forward to what’s ahead, as we carry the joyous freewheeling energy of the big top with us when we move up the hill.
THANK YOU for being here to help us put a celebratory capstone on one era of Hudson Valley Shakespeare, as together we embark on a thrilling new chapter.
Warmly,
Davis McCallum, Artistic Director

“I to the world am like a drop of water That in the ocean seeks another drop.”
ONE OF SHAKESPEARE’S MOST MADCAP COMEDIES, the play follows two sets of identical twins, separated at birth, who unknowingly cross paths many years later. Their encounters spark a whirlwind of mayhem, leading to a series of escalating comic misadventures. With sharp wit, slapstick humor, and the special kind of heartache that comes from searching for your soulmate in a world turned upside down, The Comedy of Errors is a timeless celebration of human folly, in all its wondrous forms.

“I
to the world am like a drop of water That in the ocean seeks another drop, Who, falling there to find his fellow forth, Unseen, inquisitive, confounds himself. So I, to find a mother and a brother, In quest of them, unhappy, lose myself.”
— ANTIPHOLUS OF SYRACUS
“For know, my love, as easy mayst thou fall A drop of water in the breaking gulf, And take unmingled thence that drop again Without addition or diminishing, As take from me thyself and not me too.”

ADRIANNA
Reading, rehearsing, and giving away this particular play to an audience in 2025 is a joy. It reminds me of why I was first drawn to theater as a child. Much like my favorite stories growing up, The Comedy of Errors is wildly funny, full of heart, and filled with broad characters who continually find themselves in more and more hot water. The incredible absurdity of the farce begs us to forgo the practicalities of what is probable, in favor of the fun of what is possible.
Our process then stands on the soapbox of silly, treating hope as high art, and valuing the vulnerability of unabashed play. Especially now, I’m finding that the beauty of this story lies in its ability to illuminate joy, hope, and family, and its power to make us laugh through the chaos.
And the chaos in this play is wild. WILD! Our characters are dragged through the ringer, having their sense of self and what they know is true about the world beaten out of them. Their reality is reflected back like a grotesque funhouse mirror, where everything they know is distorted. The more they cling to what they think is true, the deeper they sink into absurdity—and the more we laugh. How unnerving it must be to feel like the only sane person in an insane world, and, if your reality can’t reflect what you know to be true, then how do you know who you are? Maybe you need to lose yourself only to discover yourself? But then, can you be both the individual “drop of water” and“part of the ocean?” Comedy of Errors suggests that the best way to understand ourselves might be to live in the chaos of being mistaken for someone else, so that our truest self can be reflected back in the eyes of someone who loves us.
Through this connection, our characters find what they’ve been searching for: each other. And in doing so, they find themselves. A reaffirming revelation that in finding the right partner, we are not diminished; we are made whole. We cannot separate drop from drop; instead, we become one. A true union doesn’t subtract from who we are—it adds to us, completing us in a way that only love and home can.
This is the magic of The Comedy of Errors. In the chaotic funhouse, in the vulnerability of losing ourselves in the pursuit of connection, we often find the truest parts of who we are — like losing ourselves in a night of theater. As we prepare to close our time under the beloved tent this year, finding family is particularly resonant. For over 30 years, the tent has been home to many—a magical space where artists and patrons have gathered, laughed, and become family. Next year, the “play” moves up the hill to an extraordinary new space, and the excitement for the future is palpable. Yet the tent is where we’ve all “lost” ourselves at times—in the stories we’ve told, the performances we’ve given, and the shared experiences we’ve had. It feels fitting that The Comedy of Errors is part of our farewell party to send us up the hill, with the hopeful reminder that family awaits at the end of our journey to a new home.

There comes a moment in everybody’s life when he must decide whether he’ll live among human beings or not — a fool among fools, or a fool alone. As for me, I’ve decided to live among them.”
SET BETWEEN A SLEEPY HUDSON RIVER TOWN and the bustling metropolis of 1880’s New York City, Thornton Wilder’s comic masterpiece is a delightful exploration of love, adventure, and the pursuit of happiness, set against the All-American backdrop of business and commerce. Davis McCallum directs this big boisterous production of the play that inspired the musical Hello, Dolly! featuring HVS favorites Nance Williamson and Kurt Rhoads as Dolly Levi and Horace Vandergelder.

Just to come right out and say it: I think Thornton Wilder is the greatest of all American playwrights. (That’s GOAAP, for those who love an acronym.) HVS staged a really terrific community-driven production of Our Town in 2016, directed by John Christian Plummer, and I’ve been eager to present another of Wilder’s plays since then. So, in some ways, this summer’s revival of The Matchmaker is long overdue.
It’s also right on time, as it feels astonishingly resonant in our current moment. Sure, you can just enjoy it as a farce, and why shouldn’t you? It’s one of the funniest and most delightful of all American stage comedies, complete with eye-candy costumes from the Gilded Age of the 1880’s. But if you listen carefully, you’ll also hear in the play a pointed critique about the way money warps our relationships, and limits our ability to live freely and authentically in the world. Wilder’s stage directions suggest that Dolly Levi is carrying a paper bag in her first scene, and I think it’s because Dolly is the quintessential New Yorker – an Irish girl whose late husband was an immigrant from Vienna. Now she’s a widow, and she knows what it means to hustle to make the rent. “Two and two make four, Mr. Kemper, always did,” she says. When she arrives in Yonkers, she doesn’t even have her train fare back to New York. What’s in the paper bag? My guess is a tuna fish sandwich and a pickle.
If this production is timely, it’s also practically site-specific, as the first act is set in a small Hudson River town, an afternoon’s train ride north of New York City. Sound familiar? There’s even an additional layer of hyper-local interest, as Wilder’s play was later transformed into the Broadway musical Hello, Dolly!, which was later made into a 1969 movie, some of which was shot on location right here in Garrison. Today, the restaurant on Garrison Landing is called Dolly’s in homage to that particular piece of local history.
But The Matchmaker is so much more than the play that was later made into the famous musical. Wilder wrote in a letter that the play was about “the aspirations of the young (and not only of the young!) for a fuller, freer participation in life.” Wilder’s weird and wonderful fourth act (cut from both the musical and the movie!) brings the play’s eclectic gallery of characters into one bohemian woman’s Greenwich Village kitchen. There, coffee and gingerbread are served in the wee hours of the morning, as one long and wild night of adventures and misadventures approaches dawn. Having put his characters through the comic wringer of terrifying escapades and narrow escapes, Wilder celebrates each of them for finding the courage to risk falling in love, and choosing to live out their lives as “a fool among fools, rather than a fool alone.”
— DAVIS McCALLUM
DAVIS McCALLUM is in his eleventh season as the Artistic Director at HVS, where he has directed productions of Henry V, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play, Cymbeline, Richard II, The Winter’s Tale, Measure for Measure, and the rolling world premiere of The Book of Will. Notable productions in New York include Greater Clements and The Harvest (Lincoln Center Theater); Lewiston/ Clarkston (Rattlestick – Drama Desk nomination for Best Play); Stupid Fucking Bird (Pearl); Fashions for Men and London Wall (Mint - Drama Desk and Lortel nomination for Best Revival); The Whale (Lortel Award for Best Play, and Calloway nomination for Best Director) and Pocatello (Playwrights Horizons); Water by the Spoonful (Second Stage – Pulitzer Prize for Drama); and February House (The Public). Other NYC credits include Signature Theatre, 13P, Clubbed Thumb, Play Company, Page 73, and the New Victory. Regional credits include the Denver Center, Dallas Theater Center, South Coast Rep, Old Globe, Guthrie, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the O’Neill, Williamstown, Humana Festival, others. His work on this production of The Matchmaker is dedicated to Penny Cherns.
THORNTON WILDER (1897–1975) was a novelist and playwright whose works celebrate the connection between the commonplace and the cosmic dimensions of human experience. He is the only writer to win Pulitzer Prizes for both drama and fiction: for his novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey, and two plays, Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth. His other novels include The Cabala, The Woman of Andros, Heaven’s My Destination, The Ides of March, The Eighth Day and Theophilus North. His other major dramas include The Matchmaker (adapted as the musical Hello, Dolly!) and The Alcestiad. The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden, Pullman Car Hiawatha and The Long Christmas Dinner are among his well-known shorter plays. He enjoyed enormous success as a translator, adaptor, actor, librettist and lecturer/teacher and his screenplay for Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of a Doubt remains a classic psycho-thriller to this day. Wilder’s many honors include the Gold Medal for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. More information on Thornton Wilder and his family is available in Penelope Niven’s definitive biography, Thornton Wilder: A Life (2013) as well as on the Wilder Family website, www.thorntonwilder.com

FROM THE CELEBRATED AUTHOR OF Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 comes a hauntingly original new musical about the search for human connection in the digital age. Featuring rich harmonies and intricate vocal arrangements, Octet finds compelling human drama in our middle-of-the-night anxieties about the impact of technology on the nature of our relationships. The HVS production is the first to follow the original Off-Broadway version, which won the 2020 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical.

The Internet, the Web, the Cloud; Dark web, Deep web, TOR, 4chan; spoof, spam, dox, swat; DDoS, hack, alias. Online, offline. IRL. URL. The Internet.
To put it simply: the internet is an interconnected network of machines. These machines exchange information in ways it can be difficult to understand. A person in Anaheim writes an email, hits send, and it arrives just moments later in Zagreb. Thanks to the advantages of technology, people can now connect with each other over vast distances - knowledge can be shared, relationships forged, businesses run — and it’s all conducted from a machine in a home, or a cafe, or a pocket. Desktop, laptop, tablet, smartphone, smartwatch: we can stay connected from (nearly) anywhere on earth that we might choose to go. Connected to our work, families, friends — connected to our money, our health records, our personal data; connected to, well…anything we’ve ever shared or bought or sought. Opinions, photos, information, secrets, recipes, funny stories, homework, reviews, bank records, calendars, work documents, contracts: where we’ve been and how fast our hearts were beating when we got there. Anything and everything about us now floats within easy reach through this unimaginably vast and fathomless ocean of data. Having so much life at our fingertips is amazing and beautiful and dangerous and addictive; it’s all of these, and all at once. The interconnected network never sleeps, never really forgets, and often masks the true intentions of those who seek out mayhem.
In the printed materials for Octet, author/composer Dave Malloy shares this quote. I’d like to leave you with it: it’s from Sophocles’ play Antigone: “Nothing vast enters the lives of mortals without a curse.”
That sounds about right, doesn’t it?

Hudson Valley Shakespeare (HVS) is a professional non-profit theater company that presents a rotating repertory season of both Shakespeare and more contemporary plays and musicals in an open-air theater overlooking the Hudson River. Founded in 1987, HVS’s critically acclaimed body of work is forged from the most essential of elements — actors, audience, language, and landscape. The company’s spectacular 98-acre campus serves as a vibrant hub for the local community, a cultural and educational anchor for the region, and a national model for environmental sustainability in the performing arts. After 38 years of performing in a seasonal tent, in the summer of 2026 HVS will welcome audiences to its first-ever permanent home — the Samuel H. Scripps Theater Center, designed by the celebrated architecture firm Studio Gang. Protected from the elements but open to the landscape, the Scripps Theater Center will be the first purpose-built LEED Platinum theater in the United States.
Rooted in the landscape of the Hudson Valley, with the plays of William Shakespeare as our touchstone, HVS engages the widest possible audience in a theatrical celebration of our shared humanity.
We are a classical repertory theater that embraces the present moment, and our work springs from the most essential of elements — actor, audience, language, and landscape. As both a local community hub and a national arts destination, we foster meaningful human connections at the convergence of nature and culture.
Annually, tens of thousands of people attend HVS’s summer plays and performances, as well as our year-round education programs and a wide range of community offerings. We are so proud to reach diverse audiences, students, teachers, neighbors, and families, and it’s in large part thanks to your generosity.

62 | Hudson Valley Shakespeare 2025
Founding Artistic Director
Terrence O’Brien co-founded HVS with actress Melissa Stern in 1987, and for 27 years, O’Brien was HVS’s artistic leader. During that time, he directed more than 30 of HVS’s productions, garnered significant critical acclaim in major press nationally, and built a very loyal audience who enthusiastically returned to our tent theater year after year. He co- authored, with Stern, HVS’s original Statement of Purpose, he developed and evolved HVS’s signature performance style, and he remains deeply dedicated to the idea that Shakespeare’s plays can be made accessible without sacrificing any of their depth and integrity. O’Brien was instrumental in developing the design of the HVS tent theater and in integrating HVS’s acting style with the theater space. Over several years he developed an informal company of actors and artists, many of whom have developed lasting friendships, marriages, and in some cases, have had children. He performed his original one-man play, Popular Mechanics, for Bedlam in New York City. Under the auspices of Rehabilitation Through The Arts, he facilitated workshops and directed a cast of prisoners in his own adaptation of On the Waterfront at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. He directed Pimm’s Mission and The Memory Exam for Oberon Theatre Ensemble at 59E59. He directed The Absolute Brightness of Leonard Pelkey for Middlebury Acting Company. He and his wife, Jane Praeger, live in Manhattan.

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare receives many donations under $500, which we gratefully acknowledge. All gifts to HVS are extremely appreciated and are essential to our theater in helping us to support artists and to present exceptional plays for generations to come. Thank you for your support.
