Someone is on your side. No one is alone. INTO THE WOODS, "No One Is Alone"

DEAR FRIEND, Welcome to the 2019 Season of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival! Every spring for more than three decades, people in this community have welcomed the return of the HVSF tent to the magnificent grounds of Boscobel House and Gardens. Folks might catch a glimpse of it from the train, or spot it from across the river at West Point, or crane their necks while driving by on Route 9D. It’s an annual sign that another long winter is behind us, and that summer will soon be here. It’s also a perfect example of the ways in which this theater company has become an integral part of this community, and vice versa. This tent is a communal space, a place where we are present together. Take a moment right now and look around you. Throughout the performance, you will be sharing time and space with other audience members, measuring your own reactions against theirs, laughing together at the same jokes, or perhaps responding quite differently to certain moments. In this space, we are constantly reminded that no one is alone. Each person’s unique perspective is just one of many. We are each part of a larger whole. Our 2019 Season is bursting with humor and heart. These classic stories are not merely frivolous, nor are they all doom and gloom. Though centuries old, they speak to our current fraught American moment. What solace, inspiration, or wisdom might they offer us today? A wider perspective is often a powerful antidote to seemingly intractable problems. Or, at very least, is a reminder that others have been here before us, and we’re all in this together. On behalf of Managing Director Kate Liberman, our company of artists, our staff, and our Board, I want to thank you for joining us under this big, beautiful tent. Whether it’s your first time, or you’ve been a part of this community for decades, this theater belongs to you, and we are delighted you are here. Enjoy! Warmly,

Davis McCallum, Artistic Director

Thou and I are too wise to woo peaceably. Benedick, Act 5, Scene II

Synopsis

Cast

Don Pedro makes a triumphant return home from the war with two of his soldiers, Benedick and Claudio, in tow. When they attend a celebratory masked ball at the home of Duke Leonato, Claudio falls for the Duke’s daughter, Hero, and Don Pedro agrees to woo her in disguise on his behalf. Claudio and Hero’s marriage is soon arranged.

Margaret . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Kendall Cafarocc

Hero’s cousin Beatrice and the dashing Benedick, on the other hand, are fiercely opposed to love, swearing off marriage and railing against courtship in all forms. The two resume their long-waged war of wits, and as insults fly, Benedick and Beatrice’s friends hatch a scheme to warm the hearts of the bantering foes.

Antonio, Sexton . . . . .Stephen Paul Johnson*

Meanwhile, the prince’s misanthropic brother Don John hatches a deceit of his own, leading Claudio to believe that his beloved Hero has been unfaithful on the eve of their wedding. As tensions rise and scandal abounds, the chaos created in pursuit of true love is exposed for all to see.

Director's Note One of my deepest, guiltiest pleasures is watching romantic comedies — When Harry Met Sally, Crazy Rich Asians — I’ve seen them all to the point of memorization. It’s a guilt-inducing pleasure because shouldn’t I as a strong, independent feminist be more interested in seeing a story about a woman achieving great feats instead of focusing on the whether or not she gets a man? It’s with this same torment that I approach Much Ado. I am entranced by this deliciously agonizing story of people so entrapped by their own foibles that the vulnerable act of falling in love seems out of reach. But how does one approach this romantic comedy when its primary plot hangs on an emotional and slanderous abuse in this era of #believewomen? ‘O God, that I were a man!’ cries Beatrice after her cousin, Hero, has been wrongly accused and slandered. Beatrice, our modern feminist heroine, cries out against a patriarchal system wishing that she were entitled to the same attributes that men are not only allowed to have but are celebrated for – vengeance, wit, intelligence, defiance, and sexual prowess. Shakespeare exposes the double standards of Elizabethan society, which still exist in to the present day. A woman is “too curst” if she is ambitious; “too contemptible” if more willing to choose what pleases her, rather than what pleases society. We set our production in our version of 1950s America — an era in which the burgeoning feminist movement clashes with the traditional idea of femininity. By setting it in a familiar time in American history, we aim to more deeply examine the larger theme of gender and power. With a veneer of levity and colorfulness of the time, the production aims to contrast with the darker underbelly of patriarchal culture. The controversy, or “much ado,” arises over a woman’s place in a world in which strict gender roles must be adhered to. Perhaps what keeps this Elizabethan romantic comedy relevant is the sly acknowledgment that the “much ado” is truly over “nothing,” and that the societal structures are indeed baseless, and can be challenged, even changed.

Fortune brings in some boats that are not steer’d. Pisanio, Act 4, Scene III

Synopsis

Cast

Princess Imogen, sole heir to Cymbeline, King of Britain, secretly marries Posthumus (a poor but worthy gentleman), without the King’s knowledge or blessing. Cymbeline is newly married to a wicked Queen, who is plotting to marry Imogen to her own son, Cloten, thereby setting him up to inherit the crown. Enraged by his daughter’s marriage, the King imprisons her and banishes Posthumus.

Posthumus’ Mother, Roman Senator . . . . . . . . . . . . Kendall Cafarocc

Posthumus gives Imogen a bracelet to remind her of their love. In exile, he is baited into a wager by the villainous Iachimo, who is determined to prove Posthumus’s confidence in his wife’s fidelity is misplaced. Iachimo comes to Britain in a failed attempt to seduce Imogen, but succeeds in stealing her bracelet. He presents this to Posthumus to convince him of Imogen’s betrayal. Enraged, Posthumus tries to instigate her murder, but his servant Pisanio helps the Princess escape in boy’s attire under the name “Fidele.” Twenty years earlier, Cymbeline’s two sons (an infant and a toddler) were stolen from court by Belarius, a once-beloved, unjustly banished courtier. Long assumed dead, the trio have been living as hermits in the Welsh countryside, where “Fidele” must now travel to find Posthumus, trailed by Cloten… Confusion escalates before a divine power intervenes and all is revealed. 14

Director’s Note Cymbeline defies description and categorization. Combining elements of comedy, tragedy, and history, the play balances absurdity, horror, humor, and heart. As we shuttle back and forth between the British court, Imperial Rome, and the wilderness of coastal Wales, the audience is enlisted to help weave together a complex tapestry of action and event. At the very center is Imogen, the original rebel Princess, who kicks off the play by secretly marrying Posthumus, a poor but worthy gentleman. This radical act upends the world of the play, and sets the story in perpetual motion. So, it’s a kind of 17th century punk rock love story, even if the lovers spend almost the entirety of the play apart. Posthumus and his chief rival for Imogen’s attention, the dunderheaded Cloten, are at first glance polar opposites: one is the good guy and one is the bad guy. But under intense pressure, they are revealed to be cut from the same cloth of male insecurity. In our production, Posthumus and Cloten are played by the same actor. Confusing? Not really. Until it is. Even for Imogen. In the magnificent final scenes, Shakespeare seems to be asking: Are there some crimes that are beyond forgiveness? We are presented with a man who has done unforgiveable things, and yet is unexpectedly absolved of his crimes. The question for me is not should this man be forgiven (he should not), but rather: what makes possible this miraculous act of grace—forgiveness that is given, but not deserved—and how are we meant to feel about it? When Imogen goes into disguise, she adopts the name Fidele (“The Faithful One”). The play is deeply interested in questions of faith — not in the religious sense, but in the interpersonal sense. What does it mean to be faithful in love? How do we keep faith when all seems lost? What courage does it take to entrust another person with your whole heart? And how do you weather a crisis of faith when all that you’ve known to be true turns out to be false? At its heart, Cymbeline dramatizes the deep human need to believe in that which we cannot verify with our eyes, but still perceive all around us: faith, hope, charity… and the greatest of these is love.

My heart will still be beating, stirring the soil, spinning the earth, for you. Cyrano, Act 5

Synopsis

Cast

A revered soldier in the French army, Cyrano de Bergerac carries a rapier-sharp wit, passion for poetry, and outsized confidence… in most things. The wordsmith’s greatest weakness — his embarrassingly prominent nose – keeps him from telling his childhood friend, the brilliant and beautiful Roxane, how he really feels about her.

When Christian, a handsome new cadet, joins Cyrano’s regiment, Roxane falls for him immediately and asks Cyrano to watch over the young soldier. Meanwhile, Christian—as inarticulate as his supervisor is eloquent — asks for Cyrano’s help in crafting love letters for Roxane. A third suitor, the pompous Count DeGuiche, is enraged when Roxane rebuffs him, sending both men off to war. Months pass and, unbeknownst to Christian, Cyrano has continued writing to Roxane, criss-crossing the battlefield to hand-deliver notes. Roxane finds her way to the trenches, bringing hope and inspiration to the war-worn battalion. The men’s ruse is almost revealed in a moment of calm, but tragedy strikes, leading Cyrano to maintain the secret. Can the poet with panache ever find the courage to own his words?

Playwrights’ Note Jason O’Connell I’ve always loved Cyrano. The notion of a hero whose brilliant wit and romantic soul are encased in a less-than-perfect physical package has always appealed to me. Perhaps this is because I was still a kid when I first encountered the character (via Derek Jacobi’s portrayal and Steve Martin’s Roxanne), and fantasies of taking out a hundred lesser men with gymnastics both physical and verbal were de rigueur for a teenage boy obsessed with superheroes and stand-up comedians in equal measure. I’ve always wanted to tell this story, and I’m so grateful the stars aligned to allow me and my dear friend Brenda to create our own small-cast, stripped down, gently irreverent, and deeply affectionate adaptation. So much of Cyrano is about the poetry of the individual soul, the artist inside each of us that yearns to create and express no matter our job, our background, or our appearance. Cyrano de Bergerac may have been a very real man, but Rostand’s (and Derek Jacobi’s, and Steve Martin’s, and our own) version of him is, at his core, Everyman. He contains multitudes – the power and beauty and insecurity and hope that lie within each and every one of our teenage fantasies.

Brenda Withers While putting together our Cyrano, Jason and I discovered that Edmond Rostand’s classic was an adaptation in its own right, a sort of fantasy biopic imagining the highs and lows of Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac, a celebrated figure known throughout Paris for his satires, swordplay, and yes, unusually large nose. Rostand mixed certain fact with probable fiction to sharpen his play’s stakes — the real-life swashbuckler did fight valiantly with the Gascony Guards at the siege of Arras and met his end in the way the playwright suggests, but the legend of his hidden love is likely an invention (albeit one a romantic like Cyrano might have enjoyed!). If adaptation is, as famously suggested, the highest form of flattery, we’re hopeful our reworking is as faithful to Cyrano’s spirit as our predecessor’s, and as affectionately imagined.

Director’s Bio Meredith McDonough was the Associate Artistic Director at Actors Theatre of Louisville for the past seven seasons where favorite directing credits included both parts of Angels in America, Peter and the Starcatcher, and The Last Five Years. In the Humana Festival, she directed the premieres of Marginal Loss, Dot, brownsville song (b-side for trey), and Airness, among others. Regionally, favorites include The Lily’s Revenge with Taylor Mac (Magic Theatre), Noises Off (Guthrie), Fair Use (Steppenwolf), Eurydice (Williamstown), the musical Summer of ’42, and the US premiere of NSFW (Roundhouse). She was the New Works Director for TheatreWorks Silicon Valley and for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre. education: Northwestern; mfa: UCSD.

You’ve changed. You’re daring. You’re different in the woods. The Baker’s Wife, “It Takes Two”

Synopsis

Cast

As The Narrator draws us into the woods, we meet familiar favorites: Cinderella wishing to attend the King’s festival; Jack wishing that his cow would produce some milk; Little Red wishing for bread to take to Grandmother’s house; the Wolf wishing for his next meal; Rapunzel wishing for her freedom; and two charming Princes wishing for their Princesses.

Rapunzel . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Kendall Cafaro cc

We also meet new friends–The Baker and The Baker’s Wife–wishing for a child. Their neighbor, a vile old Witch, cursed the family with infertility after uncovering the sins of The Baker’s father. She agrees to lift the curse if the couple can supply the ingredients for a potion she’s cooking up in short order.

Rapunzel’s Prince . . . . . . . . . . . . Luis Quintero*

The Baker and his wife set off to assemble the materials, employing a bit of trickery at every turn and struggling to justify their deceits, while our fairytale favorites begin complicated journeys of their own. Wishes eventually come true and the promise of wealth, romance, or Happily Ever After seems near for all. But as the lights come up on Act II, everyone is jolted into the woods again and the community must unite to face the unimaginable consequences of their insatiable appetite for more.

Director’s Note “Witches can be right, giants can be good.” Once upon a time, it seemed I would always be Little Red Riding Hood. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I loved her (being her, playing her). As a young actor, that precocious combo-platter of sass and “worldly” wisdom was my successful calling card. Disobedience and curiosity defined much of my early years — at least onstage. And Red was always there for me, my signature role. That cape as red as blood, that switch-blade, twitching in my pocket — ready and waiting for any wolf who dared to come my way. And then I grew up — or older, anyway. And found myself yearning for new adventures and responsibilities. I shifted professions and became a director. I became a mom. Now I was in charge of the storytelling, no longer skipping around the woods but expected to answer the questions, not ask them. To preside over the chaos, to manage, to plan, to execute. I loved that too. I never looked back. That is, until Davis so kindly asked me to direct Into The Woods here — in the woods. And then, it seemed, all I could do was look back. Even in my excitement and anticipation, this gorgeous, whip-smart, brilliant bricolage of a fairytale — that I’d known so well for so long — seemed suddenly, violently brand new. And newly terrifying. Sondheim’s familiar, diamond-sharp lyrics demanding fresh ears and a wide-open heart. Each iconic character vigorously reintroducing themselves to my softer, less certain, middle-aged self. Unexpectedly, it was the Witch’s alienation and moral skepticism that spoke the loudest, Cinderella’s self-aware ambivalence, The Baker’s relatable fear. My thuggish, confident inner Red; silent. Disappeared. And then I remembered; stories find us. The enduring, important ones crop up time and again at different stages in our lives. The bedtime story we were read is the one we are reading, or the one we still wish to be read. And maybe if we’re brave, we can meet these stories exactly where we are. Not looking back or ahead. Whatever age, whatever experience we bring, as long as we are armed with a few good friends we can take comfort in the knowledge that all paths through all woods weave together calamity and heartache with hope and humanity. And if we’re really paying attention, maybe a little magic, too. Meet you in the woods!

Men at some time are masters of their fates. Caesar, Act 1, Scene II

Inspiration A charismatic war hero on the brink of kingship, Caesar is celebrated by the people of Rome – but mistrusted by some of his closest friends who fear his popularity will throw the country into chaos. In our immersive, 90-minute touring production, audiences will help bring this anachronistic tale of violent betrayal to vivid life, constructing a dystopian world of power and consequence.

Director’s Note “The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones.” Julius Caesar, Act III, Sc ii I am thrilled to bring this power play of politics off the page and into schools and venues for an immersive theatrical experience where audiences are encouraged to actively participate. Julius Caesar takes off like a runaway freight train. After Caesar’s murder, the mob has taken over. Who’s there to stop them from burning Rome to the ground? And whose side are you on? In this dystopian setting, a fragile Rome feels like it is on the brink of collapse. It is a world of secrecy and fear where the walls have ears. Layered costumes allow weapons to be easily hidden and dark hoods cover true identities. Rebellion happens in the dead of night, and secret greetings and coded language distinguish camps. A line is drawn. By encouraging active participation, this production challenges the audience to be complicit in the storytelling. Driving, percussive live-foley and stylized choreography give a powerful presence to the mob and protestors, while bold flashes of red bring the play’s brutal themes to the surface. The conspirators’ brand themselves murderers as they pour into the streets — red-handed — proclaiming, “Liberty! Freedom! Tyranny is dead!” For me, this story has never been about good versus evil, but about testing our moral convictions. Caesar explores the ambition of power and what this ambition may drive us to do. I began my own investigation of Shakespeare’s text by asking many questions: Who holds power in this world? Who inherits power? And how is Caesar’s world different at the end from when the play began? I invite the audience to ask themselves the same questions as they embark on Caesar’s journey with us.

HVSF 2 AT THE DEPOT THEATRE The tenth season of HVSF’s popular new works series kicks off in August! Discover new stories and old friends in an intimate theater setting: The Philipstown Depot Theatre inside Garrison Landing’s historic train station.

Hook’s Tale By John Leonard Pielmeier Directed by Anna Strasser

Tuesday, August 6 7:30pm

All Tickets $20. The Philipstown Depot Theatre 10 Garrison’s Landing Garrison, NY 10524 3 miles south of HVSF

The “Dastardly Villain” of Peter Pan fame gets his turn at the helm in John Pielmeier’s charming, coming-of-old-age tale. A host of characters lead our antihero, Captain James Hook, along life’s weighty arc–from Youth through Maturity and inevitable Mortality–and the notorious pirate’s story begins to look far different from that penned by J.M. Barrie. Hook’s Tale will have its world premiere in the Spring of 2020 at Stages Repertory Theatre in Houston, TX. This Presentation is made by Special Arrangement with Donald Corren.

Scarlet Letter By Kate Hamill Directed by Sarna Lapine

Friday, August 9 7:30pm

The Face Of It A Storyhorse Documentary Theater Piece Written by Jeremy Davidson Directed by Mary Stuart Masterson

As the adulterous Hester Prynne faces a raging public and a vengeful, long-lost husband, Hamill (Pride and Prejudice playwright and adapter extraordinaire) sheds new light and laughter on the sin, shame, and utter insanity of a puritanical society not far from our own mad, modern world. Adapted from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Storyhorse Documentary Theater’s collection of three one-act plays was inspired by transcribed conversations, historical documents, and other primary sources, and focuses on the social, political, environmental, and medical issues faced by Hudson Valley citizens.

Sunday, August 11 7:30pm

Bewilderness By Zachary Fine Directed by Davis McCallum

Wednesday, August 14 7:30pm 42

Did you know that Henry David Thoreau wrote a flop of epic proportions before penning his American masterpiece, Walden? In this buoyant new work, writer/actor/director and consummate clown Zachary Fine offers a hilarious celebration of one of America’s greatest authors, and the stunning, catastrophic failures we all must face on the road to our biggest creative revelations.

THE PERFECT PICNIC Former HVSF board member Katherine Whiteside is an internationally published author and journalist. She and Peter Gergely (local pediatrician, artist, and HVSF Advisory Board member) have collaborated for eight years on “Gardening Gusto” a weekly, opinionated gardening and cooking column for The Putnam County Courier and The Putnam County News & Recorder.

Local journalist and longtime HVSF fan Katherine Whiteside loves a picnic, especially if it features the promise of a performance under the HVSF Theater Tent, a lazy sunset on Boscobel’s Great Lawn, and one of her mouthwatering recipes. Bring along this seasonal cocktail on your next visit!

Champagne Cocktail with Homemade Hibiscus Bitters To Make the Bitters

To Make the Cocktail

Do this two weeks in advance: Put ingredients listed below in a wide-mouth lidded jar. Screw on lid, shake until sugar dissolves, and store jar at room temperature.

Quickly, deftly dip a sugar cube into the bitters. Drop bittered cube into a Champagne flute. (Glamorous glass or picnic plastic? Your choice.) Fill the flute with chilled Champagne. The hibiscus bitters will tint the Champagne a pale-pink and add a refreshing zing as the sugar cube bounces up and down with joy.

• 1 c. Vodka • 1 Red Zinger tea bag (this Celestial Seasonings tea contains hibiscus) • 1 2-inch Cinnamon Stick • 3 tbs. Orange Peel, cut into chunks • 6 whole Cloves • ½ tsp. Ground Mace • 6 whole Cardamom (green) • ½ tsp. Ground Nutmeg • 1 2-inch Vanilla Pod • 8 whole Allspice • ½ Bay Leaf • 2 slices Ginger (fresh) • ½ tsp. Raw Sugar

CASTING A SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION Carl Howell, Actor and HVSF Teaching Artist who previously appeared under the Theater Tent in 2012 as Romeo, discusses the power of Shakespeare performance to ignite student imaginations… The Chappaqua Summer Scholarship Program (CSSP) is a three-year, by-application-only summer school for motivated students from under-resourced New York City high schools. With a focus on academic and cultural enrichment, CSSP offers its students a wide array of creative experiences, including workshops led by HVSF teaching artists. In 2018, our program focused on The Taming of the Shrew, and I witnessed 22 students become more themselves. They found identity and ownership and community through the words, ideas, and themes set forth in the play.

I’ve devoted a large portion of my life to reading, performing, and teaching Shakespeare, and I’d love to share a little of what I’ve learned:

Reading it can be hard,

Shakespeare is science.

especially if you’re 15 and this is the first time you’ve ever looked at a Shakespeare play. It’s a bit like learning a new language.

Before you can act it, you need to investigate the words you’re actually saying.

It’s not boring at all.

Hamlet says, “suit the action to the word, the word to the action.” It’s not just your voice and some text; it’s a full-body expression of a feeling that’s so much larger than anything you’ve felt. It takes cardio, articulation, imagination, and energy!

Even though this is a common misconception by students (and some adults!). Here’s why…

Shakespeare is math. He writes in a rhythm, in a set structure. With practice and courage, if you allow your brain and heart to sync up with that rhythm, it immediately becomes more clear and more exciting.

46

Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival 2019

Shakespeare is gym class.

When you get it, you get it.

At CSSP this past July, they got it. I’m reminded of two students, Joshua Oppong-Peprah and Lisa Haye, who performed an amazing Kate/Petruchio exchange from The Taming of the Shrew in front of the class—with about 45 seconds of preparation. We read the scene once, gave them an overview of who they were and what they were trying to achieve, and they flew. Through their own instincts, intelligence, and courage, they perfectly embodied a sense of competition in the language, the need for listening before you can respond, and that words are full of power and possibility for change. The class went wild… the good kind of wild. They heard it, saw it, felt it, and were moved by it. There was shouting, cheering, real laughter. There were gasps. It was one of the best moments of my creative life. On the final day of the program, we performed for students’ host families and CSSP faculty. We also assigned third-year students to emcee, introducing themselves and their classmates, and leading a public discussion on the more complicated themes of the play: gender roles in marriage, a woman’s “duty” and obligation of “obedience” to her husband, a man’s tendency to “tame” a woman into submission. What initially frightened them (“what do you mean, our opinions on the play?!”) challenged them to speak up. What’s more, it forced them to make decisions about complicated issues and defend them against their classmates in a respectful, yet passionate, manner. I saw first-hand how Shakespeare’s body of work can teach, inspire, and ignite imaginations for good. Sheila and her husband Tuck traveled to the Hudson Valley for over 20 years where they hiked, climbed, and flew throughout the highlands — and made HVSF their theatrical home. Because of this, it was important to Sheila to recognize HVSF in a special way. If HVSF has made a difference to you and your family, we hope you will consider remembering the Festival in your estate with a legacy gift. Your support will ensure the vitality of theater in the Hudson Valley for years to come!

ABOUT HUDSON VALLEY SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL

Our Mission

Now celebrating its 33rd summer season, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF) is a critically acclaimed, professional, non-profit theater company based in Garrison, NY. The Festival has established a reputation for lucid, engaging, and highly inventive productions staged under this iconic, open-air Theater Tent overlooking the Hudson River at historic Boscobel House and Gardens. In recent years, the Festival has also ventured beyond the Tent, touring its work to other venues throughout the Hudson Valley, transferring productions to other theaters, engaging its community through radically participatory art-making, and reaching over 50,000 students and educators annually through its year-round Education programs. Over the years, HVSF’s exuberantly irreverent productions have gained a devoted following. Critics from The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Wall Street Journal have applauded the clarity, energy, wit, and imagination of our productions, and the unique and playful nature of the actor-audience relationship under the tent. Every summer, over 35,000 friends and supporters come together under this tent to enjoy vibrant productions of the greatest plays ever written in one of the most unusual and exciting performance venues in the American Theater. Thank you for being among them this year.

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival engages the widest possible audience in a fresh conversation about what is essential in Shakespeare’s plays. Our theater lives in the here and now, at the intersection between the virtuosity of the actor, the imagination of the audience, and the inspiration of the text.

As a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and a public trust, our theater belongs to you.

A BRIEF HISTORY HVSF was founded by Melissa Stern and Terry O’Brien in September 1987 with an outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Manitoga, home of industrial designer Russell Wright, in Garrison, NY. The following year, Boscobel House and Gardens agreed to host HVSF’s mainstage season on the estate’s expansive grounds, and that summer’s production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It was performed under a tent overlooking the Hudson River. Under O’Brien’s leadership, and with the enthusiastic support of our Board of Directors and community of patrons, HVSF grew dramatically. In 1994, we added a second show to our season. That same year, HVSF deepened its impact on the region by offering hands-on, performance-driven education programs to area schools. In 2004, we began to tour innovative Shakespeare productions to middle and high schools. In 2006, HVSF acquired a spectacular, custom-designed, open-air theater tent with seating for 540, establishing a performance venue unlike anything else in American theater. HVSF has served more than 500,000 patrons since our first season in 1987. Terry O’Brien led the theater for 27 years, directing more than 30 productions, and stepped down as Artistic Director in December 2013. After a nationwide search for his successor, HVSF’s Board appointed Davis McCallum as Artistic Director in May 2014.

Sean McNall and Kurt Rhoads in 2017’s TWELFTH NIGHT directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel

In 2015, HVSF’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream transferred to The Pearl Theatre Company in New York, where it earned rave reviews and garnered the company’s first-ever Drama League Nomination. In 2016, HVSF celebrated its 30th anniversary with its largest single project to date, a citizen-driven production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, followed two years later by a citizen-driven world premiere of Seth Bockley’s Rip Van Winkle; or, Cut the Old Moon Into Stars. In 2017, the Festival produced its first ever world premieres — Kate Hamill’s Pride and Prejudice (a co-production with Primary Stages in New York) and Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will. This season, HVSF goes even bigger and bolder with its first-ever musical, Sondheim’s critically acclaimed Into the Woods (see pages 21-23).

2017 Production Interns with their supervisors

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING HVSF’s professional training programs (“Generation Next”) are immersive, summer experiences for early-career performers, designers, technicians, and managers that emphasizes hands-on work, mentorship, professional development, and collaboration. Our ultimate goal is to create secure pathways to future employment for aspiring actors, production professionals, and administrators. And while most theater training programs are unpaid or charge tuition, participants receive an educational stipend and — in most cases — local housing, reducing barriers to employment in the arts for those in financial need.

MEET THE HVSF TEAM DAVIS MCCALLUM Artistic Director Davis is in his fifth season as HVSF’s Artistic Director, and is honored to lead the company alongside Managing Director Kate Liberman. Under their leadership, HVSF established HVStories, a multi-year programming initiative to tell the stories of the Hudson River Valley; and FULL CIRCLE, a year-round community engagement program inspired by 2016’s citizen-driven production of Our Town. His extensive background with Shakespeare and the classics includes productions at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Guthrie, The Old Globe, The Pearl, the American Shakespeare Center, and The Acting Company. A graduate of Princeton, he studied Shakespeare at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and trained as a director at LAMDA. He has taught acting and directing at Princeton and The New School for Drama. He is the father of two sons, Thomas and Angus.

KATE LIBERMAN Managing Director Kate joined HVSF as Managing Director in 2015. She is honored to lead HVSF in partnership with Davis McCallum. Previously, she served as General Manager at The Laguna Playhouse, where she worked on strategic planning, a fiscal turnaround, and capital improvements. Prior to The Playhouse, she served as Associate Managing Director at Yale Repertory Theatre, Managing Director of Yale Summer Cabaret, and Managing Director Fellow at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Kate was Associate Manager of Development at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC where she executed a successful $10M campaign for the 2008 festival, Arabesque: Arts of The Arab World. She holds an MFA in theater management from Yale School of Drama and an MBA from Yale School of Management, and a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude. At Yale, she was the recipient of the Morris J. Kaplan Prize for recognition in theater management. She is a recipient of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship and served as President of the Truman Scholars Association. In 2017, Kate received the Business Council of Westchester’s 40 Under 40 Rising Star Award. She proudly serves as the immediate past president of the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce. Originally from the Boston area, Kate lives in Peekskill with her wonderful husband, Eric, and her son, Toby.

TERRENCE O’BRIEN Founding Artistic Director Terrence O’Brien co-founded HVSF with actress Melissa Stern in 1987, and for 27 years, O’Brien was HVSF’s artistic leader. During that time, he directed more than 30 of HVSF’s productions, garnered significant critical acclaim in major press nationally, and built a very loyal audience who enthusiastically returned to our tent theater year after year. He co-authored, with Stern, HVSF’s original Statement of Purpose, he developed and evolved HVSF’s signature performance style, and he remains deeply dedicated to the idea that Shakespeare’s plays can be made accessible without sacrificing any of their depth and integrity. O’Brien was instrumental in developing the design of the HVSF tent theater and in integrating HVSF’s acting style with the theater space. Over several years he developed an informal company of actors and artists, many of whom have developed lasting friendships, marriages, and in some cases, have had children. He performed his original one-man play, Popular Mechanics, for Bedlam in New York City, in Garrison, and in Gainesville, GA. Last May, he directed a cast of prisoners in his own adaptation of On The Waterfront at Sing Sing Correctional Facility. He is currently adapting Investigating Sex into a theatre piece, and he’ll be doing studio work on that project at the Baryshnikov Arts Center this summer. O’Brien is the director of the New World Shakespeare Lab in New York City, a group that seeks to evolve a more spontaneous style of acting Shakespeare. He and his wife, Jane Praeger, live in Manhattan with their daughter, Jenne, and son, Leo.

(In alphabetical order)
