CARVING WORKSHOPS Volunteers

Ladew Gardens runs carving workshops during the week of Garden Glow. Volunteers come to our sheds and carve. Some people carve one, some people carve many. Some only gut the pumpkins as a way to join in the fun. And some just like to carve. The community comes out in droves. Everyone is welcome. Corporations even shuttle employees out in groups for an afternoon as a way to involve their teams in community initiatives.

IT IS OUR AMAZING VOLUNTEERS THAT CREATE THE BEAUTIFUL FIELD OF OVER 800 GLOWING JACK O'LANTERNS WHICH IS A TRUE HIGHLIGHT OF THE EVENT.

JACK O' LANTERNS

TRUE PUMPKIN ART

In addition to our amazing volunteers that come out to carve our pumpkins and or donate carved works, we also partner with true artists and "artist types" who also come out to create carved art for all to enjoy

SPECIAL CARVINGS

Ladew provides inspiration, tools and pumpkins for those who want to join in the carving fun. Chosen artists are invited to carve 1 of 20 extra large pumpkins that are made available to more serious artists.

EXQUISITE DETAIL

The level of detail in many of the pumpkins is a sight to be seen.

500 + PUMPKINS

As noted earlier in our volunteer highlights, a pumpkin patch of over 800 carved, glowing pumpkins continues to be an event favorite! For 2023 we are introducing a new different type of dynamic pumpkin display

ARTISTS

EVERY YEAR WE PARTNER WITH A NUMBER OF FABULOUS ARTISTS WHO WOW OUR VISITORS WITH THEIR CREATIVE TALENTS BY CREATING GLOWING ART INSTALLATIONS.

SCOTT PENNINGTON

Pennington's installation from 2021 was so popular he doubled the size of his new one for 2022. His carnivalinspired piece could be enjoyed from many different areas on the garden because of its sheer size alone!

SOOKKYOUNG PARK

Towson University student Sookkyoung

Park joined us this year with her "Blooming Garden installation that had been living at the Peale Museum before it made its way to Ladew Gardens Its mixture of rotating color, decorative papers and fairy lights proved to be magical for both parents and children alike.

KEITH HOLT

Another crowd pleaser, artist Keith Holt created magnificent concrete moons, which could not have found a nicer home than in our gardens.

MOLLYE BENDELL

Bendell joined us again in 2022 with an expanded exhibit of growing botanicals through her augmented reality software Bendell's installation continues to be a very innovative approach for guests who experienced garden foliage growing through the screen of a tablet.

MARIANNE MCLAUGHLIN

A wonderful new addition to Garden Glow, McLaughlin created a moth screen Hand painted moths by McLaughlin were a hit while at the same time reminding us all about the importance of moths in our ecosystem

LISA DILLIN

Dillin joined us for a second year with a new thought provoking installation Per Dillin, "Barriers abound in the built environment guiding our movement through space I am interested in the cumulative psychological and social impact of this common practice – does it stunt the creative use of our bodies in space? How does it impact community building?"

DAN VAN ALLEN

A fixture at the Lantern parade at other art events around town, Van Allen has entertained us with his giant lit puppets every year. In addition to his large glowing puppets he also frequently contributes other pieces to the event such as carved gourd scuptlures

MICHAEL BOWMAN

We were so excited to have Michael Bowman join us at Glow this year A local light artist, Bowman has participated in Burning Man and completed a number of installations over the course of his young career His LED light installation was pure "eye candy," no pun intended.

8 BOXWOOD LANE CREATIVE

Creative Services consultancy 8 Boxwood Lane Creative, joined in the art fun this year by creating a projection art installation that featured a mix of a rotating graphics collection that projected up against the side of the barn wall

KATHERINE FAYHE

Katherine Fayhe continues to make a name for herself creating "crankies." Fayhe presents gorgeous vintage style puppet shows each night featuring different story lines appropriate for a variety of different age groups. Fayhe's crankie puppets are a favorite year after year!

KYLE MILLER

Kyle's illuminated pendulum -againalways an event favorite - leaves guests mesmerized as the glowing orbs following synchronized motion patterns

PATRICIA BENNETT

Live event painter, Patricia Bennett painted her 4th outdoor "live" night time painting at Garden Glow this year. This piece will be auctioned off to raise additional funds after the event.

FAMILY FUN

LOCAL GOODNESS

Live music, eats and drinks finish off the event The Ladew team works hard to find local vendors to provide our guests with deliciousness and eye candy throughout the event. Jasmine from The Local Oyster charbroils grilled oysters, a guest favorite.

Homemade apple cider donuts prepared by Maryland's Millburn Orchards are a crowd pleaser and sell out every year.

GLOWING ENTERTAINMENT

Magical, glowing stilt walkers, jugglers and hoola hoopers stroll the grounds throughout the evening

LIVE MUSIC

For 3 nights in 2022, Hot Club Baltimore played their hearts out despite chilly temperatures. This year we are excited to annouce a new twist to our music offerings In an effort to to elevate our music and to highlight those excelling in the world of music, we are showcasing a different music artist or group each night. Each evening will also feature an opening act and “top billed” group each night!

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITES

In addition to the amazing jack o'lanterns, glowing installations and amazing food, Ladew's Garden Glow showcases other interesting educational partners Here, a rare curcabit sample provided by Tommy Andres, a gourd expert affiliated with the New York Botanical Garden- is cut open to show visitors the interesting aspects of this particular variety

"Creepy Crawly Creatures of the Night" is a can't miss exhibit featuring all kinds of animals, bugs and reptiles.
