BUSINESS UPDATE

The Red Devils and Staying The Course During Covid -19 by Janice L. Wilson

Supporting Maryland Breast Cancer Patients and Their Families Unless you’ve been personally touched by breast cancer – your own diagnosis, a family member, friend or acquaintance – the disease is not part of your daily consciousness until you see the prompt of a pink ribbon. It’s fair to say that now, because of COVID-19, most of us live with a heightened awareness of how fragile our health is and how quickly our circumstance can change.

Imagine, what impact the current coronavirus climate is having on families living with breast cancer. With immune systems already compromised because of treatments, and family finances oftentimes stretched to the limit, many of them find themselves precariously perched as they face health and economic insecurity. Those fortunate enough to benefit from family support and/or safety net programs and legislation have a more optimistic view but do worry about their future. Those less fortunate are experiencing a different quality of life living with breast cancer in the age of COVID.

Regardless of where a family finds themselves on that spectrum, The Red Devils is here to be a part of that journey. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families. The cascading effects of breast cancer make the inclusion of family vitally important. For 18 years we have been a safety net for a vulnerable population. Today’s threats bring our role into an even sharper focus.

BEAUTY

Helga Surrat on The New Face of Fall by Halle von Kessler Photo by 8 Boxwood Lane Creative

Beauty Amidst a Pandemic. Changes of season also means changes in trends. And this fall, isn't any different. Except for the fact that we are amidst a national health pandemic. About Faces founder and local beauty expert Helga Surrat- and long time supporter of The Red Devils - has had to take a new fresh look at what beauty means amidst a time we have never seen in our lifetimes. Keep reading for a quick Q&A with Helga to see what she is doing to keep herself sane and beautiful this fall.

HvK: Obviously with the current pandemic, business has changed. What does "beauty amidst a pandemic" mean to you, personally, during this time? HS: I think, good skincare has become even more important since we are wearing a mask most of the day. I am now using an exfoliator at least every other night. Switching off between a scrub and an alpha hydroxy exfoliator. My favorite night treatment is GM Collin’s Stem Cell products: eye creme, serum and super hydrating treatment crème. HvK: What tips do you have for maintaining a sense of beauty and well being while being hunkered at home and or on zoom calls?

BEAUTY

Beauty Amidst a Pandemic Continued. HS: In my case, to help me maintain a positive outlook and a sense of normalcy during these very unusual circumstances I need to keep up some of my regular routines. Even under lockdown I got dressed and kept up with my morning beauty routine. HvK: What are you finding to be on trend or important for hair styles and make-up this fall?

HvK: Do you have some favorite products right now? If so, what are they and why do you like them? HS: Recently I added GM Collin’s Daily Ceramide capsule for extra hydration under the mask. I'm still applying tinted moisturizer all over. Of course the eyes are a top priority. For me an under-eye concealer is a must. I use a neutral color palette with emphasis on the eyeliner and brows. Another must have...a lip color handy for any zoom calls!

HS: The pandemic has changed all of our lives. Staying up with beauty trends at this time is not as important as staying well and healthy.

HvK: Looking ahead to fall, what is a look or fashion piece that will be important to your wardrobe this season?

At the same time we need to keep our spirit up for ourselves, as well as for our families and businesses.

HS: Ray, owner of Ruth Shaw recommends an oversized sweater.Comfort is in! I also think, masks will become a fashion statement. Ella Prtisker has been at the forefront of this trend.
