aders, Dear Re
We hope you have had a brilliant summer and some well-deserved time away from the usual day to day stuff. Both Dawn & I have had lovely breaks away with our families after all the hard work we have put into the Diary, and we are celebrating our first anniversary as Editors! It seems almost impossible that this time last year we were publishing our first ever Diary and we couldn’t be more pleased with the support we’ve had from our readers and advertisers. THANK YOU so much to our readers for reading & contributing to the Diary, our advertisers for covering the cost of production and our BRILLIANT volunteers who deliver to you, rain or shine. This month sees some food for thought on climate change issues in Wealden. The village has already been making great use of our fantastic, new skate park. Can we remind everyone that uses the park or playground to use the litter bins, or take their litter home with them. Here’s hoping, when you read this, the staff in Horam Co-op are once again able to see daylight. Good luck to new starters…….. whether it’s pre-school, reception at our outstanding local school or secondary school, new job, new home, new hobby, new friends -wherever you are, whatever you are doing, let’s enjoy the last of Summer in our beautiful part of East Sussex. Best regards,
cy Dawn & Lu xx Joint Editors 2

Dog Food................Part 1 Commercial pet food has advanced considerably in recent years, but it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the choice. Over the next two months I will look at the different categories of commercial pet foods that are currently available and some of their associated pros and cons. There are really two main ways of classifying foods - the first relates to whether the food contains everything your dog needs- ie “complete”. The second describes how the food was prepared. Complete foods are by far the most popular choice for dog owners in the UK. They come in many forms including dry, wet and raw. In order to be legally labelled as 'complete', a food must contain every nutrient required by a dog in sufficient amounts to keep the dog healthy. Complementary foods are usually wet or raw foods that don't contain the full range or the right balance of nutrients and have to be fed alongside other foods. For some people wet foods represent a more natural and appetising choice. More care should be taken to brush the dog’s teeth when giving it a totally wet diet. Raw feeding is regarded by many as the most natural way to feed a dog. Owners research and prepare their own, or buy a complete or balanced diet. Raw feeding is by no means free from criticism. Some vets and industry experts have raised concerns over the safety and nutritional balance of raw foods. More care needs to be taken handling the raw meat. Raw feeding is often a topic of heated discussions! One other category of pet foods has just started to emerge - fresh complete foods. These provide a convenient version of home cooking and include a balanced selection of high-end fresh ingredients. With fresh ingredients and a low level of processing, fresh complete foods are likely to retain a high proportion of their natural nutrients, at least compared to conventional dry and wet foods. Information taken from www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk. Once you have decided which category of food you would prefer to feed, use the filters in the website above to find the best options for your dog. If your dog has any health problems you should consult your vet and/or a canine nutritionist for advice. Maynards Green Primary School In conjunction with Rachel from High Weald Heroes, Year 5 Ravens Class at Maynards Green School recently went on our specially designed school ‘welly walk’.
Did you know you can use a dandelion stalk as a straw?
We used our mapping skills in real life!
Even though it was a grey day and a bit wet, we loved exploring the local area!
We found out about pig tracks and iron making in the woods
We came back to school over the stream through Sapperton Woods.
This circular walk started and ended at the school gates and travelled through many areas of historical and natural interest in the High Weald Area of Natural Beauty. We look forward to using the walk on many other occasions in he future. 8

Climate change & South Wealden You will have noted from our updates from a group called TN21 Environment Aware about their concerns with air pollution; recent articles about how we can all become more environmentally aware and the benefits of electric cars; our regular Planning Update column that the Diary have concerns about the over development of Wealden.
Climate emergency declared in Wealden The Diary joined Ashdown Forest & Hailsham Extinction Rebellion groups at the end of July for action outside Wealden District Council’s Climate Emergency declaration meeting. It was a very warm day, but there was a great turnout with a peaceful protest of ‘die-ins’, home baked biscuits and cold water supplied by council staff. Wealden Council declared a climate emergency (following Lewes Council’s recent declaration) but only to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Whilst we commend them for making the declaration, it’s simply too far away. To avoid unrecoverable damage, the campaign group urged the council to have a target of 2025. The issue is the lack of ownership. The government state they are doing all they can to mitigate climate change and yet are calling for thousands of houses to be built across the country. In supporting development of thousands of homes across South Wealden, WDC use electric cars as an effective mitigation against pollution in the area (Eastbourne’s levels of air pollution are one of the worst in the UK) regularly approving applications for huge estates and concreting over precious farmland with electric car charging points on all new estates, sadly recently this has been revealed as ineffective. The Times newspaper has been campaigning hard for cleaner air across the UK, as our cities have some of the worst pollution in Europe. One solution was a move to electric cars but a Times event was told last month, that they still deliver about three quarters of the pollution of conventional models through their tyres and brakes. It seems the simple answer is cleaner public transport ,more cycling and walking; less over population and over development! In addition to this, last month our local beaches were red-flagged for a few days, due to an incident at the Eastbourne waste treatment plant which led to effluent being pumped out to sea. Stephen Lloyd, Eastbourne’s MP wrote on his page: “this was bad on so many levels, not least as it’s meant our beaches have been red-flagged for a few days at the start of our holiday season, which means no swimmers etc due to likely harmful effects. Not good. I have already written to Southern Water’s Chief Executive demanding a meeting so he can explain how this happened, what steps were taken to mitigate the impact and what can the company do to ensure it doesn’t happen again. In addition, I will also him about an allegation which has come my way - that their pumping station in Hailsham South is so stretched, they’re transporting sewage to the Eastbourne plant by lorry on a weekly, sometimes daily, basis! My first question will be why wasn’t I told about this if it’s true, and my second is how on earth are Southern Water going to cope with the new homes Wealden District Council are planning to build in Hailsham, as well as the many hundreds more in and around Willingdon and Polegate? It just doesn’t stack up to me, infrastructure wise...” The Diary wholeheartedly agrees with Stephen Lloyd!!

Did you know there is a Post Office within East Hoathly Village Stores? Horam have been left without a Post Office and for some of us without our own transport, this is very inconvenient. Most of us have been using the Heathfield, Broad Oak or Rushlake Green ones, but did you know there was one in East Hoathly, less than 5 miles away? Here’s a reminder of some of the varied services they provide at their village Post Office.
NEW Banking Services and Cash Withdrawals. They now offer banking services for both personal and business accounts. You can now deposit cash, normally by using a chip and pin card and pay in cheques with a slip from your pre-printed paying in book. And you can withdraw cash with no charge. With 1,000 bank branches closing in 2018, the banks are encouraging their customers to use the Post Office for banking. They need you to use these services to keep a Post Office in East Hoathly.
Travel Services. A stock of Euros is always held at their Post Office. If you can ‘club’ together with others in your group, there are better rates for over £500 and for over £1,000 in the value of purchases. Other currencies may be ordered as well, and can be available 24 hours after ordering. During the summer, and peak times, the Post Office offers ‘Summer Sizzlers’ with a variety of currencies being given special increased rates. The Post Office’s Multi-Currency Travel Money Card, is a safe, secure and convenient method of taking currencies on holiday. Euros, dollars etc. can all be pre-loaded onto this chip and PIN card, and then it may be used at all Master card outlets around the world. Top ups can be made in branch, by app or online. The Post Office has been awarded again ‘Best Foreign Exchange /Travel Money Retailer’ in 2018. Currency ordered online can also be collected at the Post Office. Other services include VEHICLE TAX, MOBILE PHONE TOP-UPS, GIFT CARDS, SAVINGS ACCOUNTS, INSURANCE, HOME PHONE AND BROADBAND & NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH TICKETS. If it is more convenient, post and parcels can also be arranged with Royal Mail to be picked up here. They also accept ‘Labels to go’ and many types of post returns. Please do ask Verne or Carol at East Hoathly Post Office about these and other changes happening in your local Post Office. They are always pleased to help.
PLEASE USE US OR YOU MAY LOSE US! P.S. Please write to our MP asking her to support the movement asking for the Government to increase services through the Post Office. Opening hours are :

The Diary of a Villager Making Cider from your Garden Apples As autumn looms, many customers with apple trees in their gardens fancy having a go at making cider. Does this sound like you? If so, this is our ‘quick and dirty ‘ cider making guide.
What you need Apples, a knife & chopping board, a bucket & a fence post/potato masher/way of smashing the apples up. A fruit press makes this process much more efficient, ensuring maximum juice is extracted from your apples. But you can live without it. You will also need cleaner/steriliser, a sieve, a funnel, a clean tea towel, a clean demijohn, campden tablets, a bung & airlock and a sachet of yeast. And eventually, once the cider is finished, you’ll also need a syphon and some clean, sterile bottles. Never be tempted to take shortcuts with sterilising. A clean, sterile demijohn, bung and airlock are nonnegotiable otherwise your whole cider batch could be spoiled before you’ve begun.
What you do 1. Wash and chop your apples. Press/mash/juice them. 2. Sieve your juice through a funnel lined with muslin into your clean, sterile demijohn. If the apples don’t make enough juice to fill the demijohn to just below the ‘shoulders’, top it up using either pressed apple juice that you’ve bought from the shop (fresh rather than from concentrate), or with cold, preboiled water. 3. Crush a campden tablet with the back of a spoon, put it in the demijohn, swirl it around. Leave for 24 hours, then sprinkle the yeast over the surface of the juice in the demijohn and swirl it again. There must be 24 hours between these two steps to avoid the campden killing the yeast. 3. Fit the sterilised airlock and and bung with water added to the airlock. 4. Wait. Your juice will start fermenting at some point. 5. A month later (or many months depending on lots of factors), the fermentation will completely stop, your cider will be clear and it is ready to bottle. The lowest cost option will be old fizzy drinks bottles, reusing their screw caps. You won’t impress your friends, but you won’t have to buy anything either. If you want sparkly cider, you’ll need some granulated sugar which you probably have in your kitchen already. You will be adding about one teaspoon per bottle before you screw the caps on. People say that, when it comes to cider: make it in October, it will be alcohol by Christmas, bearable by Easter and drinkable by summer. The longer you leave it, the better it gets. Horam Manor Farm, Horam TN21 0JB Behind the newly built Merrydown Village Housing Estate in Horam lies Horam Manor Farm, where you can discover an array of small businesses to delight including Lakeside, a café, bistro and bar. This converted barn from Penrose Farm was blown down in the 1987 hurricane and re-erected where it is today. It now offers a relaxing and slightly quirky venue for home cooked meals with a view over one of the many fishing lakes and woodlands. Martin and Rachel took over in 2010 and have enjoyed growing the business and meeting so many of the villagers and the local businesses on the estate, but still to this day new customers say “We never knew you were here!” to the staff, even those who have lived in Horam for years! How wonderful, that they have found Lakeside at last. An Ideal Venue Lakeside is also available for private hire after closing and is a great venue for a family party with a bar offering a selection of draught lagers and ciders, Sussex best bitter and a selection of spirits including Opening Times a wide variety of local and speciality gins. Food service until Buffets or seated dining is available. Monday 9am ~ 5pm 3pm Speak to Martin about your requirements. Tuesday 9am ~ 5pm 3pm Book early for Christmas! Horam Fun Day 14th July 2019 What a great Day, the weather was just right for all, the dog show and the new dog agility course for dogs of any age and breed were well supported. The rearrangements to the layout seemed to have worked well, with all the food outlets near the village hall. The new Horam home bake off was well supported with around 60 entries, thanks to Janette of Horam Home Kitchen for organising and sponsoring the event, also to the entrants for donating their cakes to be sold with the refreshments, all adding to the success of the day. The arena was filled with entertaining events, with Wealden Brass playing in the back ground, snail races and pet show were again popular, but unfortunately the Fancy dress competition only had 4 entrants, while the Maynards Green School Choir and the Pevensey Ukulele group made great entertainment to those enjoying refreshments at the seating area in and outside the village hall. So far £3000 is to be distributed between the Friends of Maynards Green School, Horam Pre-School, Horam Village Hall, Horam Scout Group, Horam Guides, Christ Church, H&BO Football Club and Sussex 4x4 Response, who did a superb job for us manning the car parking. The committee wish to thank everyone who supported the Fun Day, especially those who donated prizes and those who set up /took down /put away and cleared the recreation ground at the end of the day Next Year the Horam Fun Day will be on Sunday 12th July 2020, plans have already started. My thanks must be added to all the committee and back room helpers who make the day a great success. If you would like to join the team please contact me, Dave Sutton on 01435 812462/07889 652586

September Gardening Diary September blow soft 'till the fruit's in the loft ' The daylight depredations of small two-legged mammals in the garden are a known evil to be suffered in tight-lipped silence, but we are now entering the season of the nocturnal visits of other mammals, four-legged. Bloody Bill Brock, why must he deracinate the whole nine yards of roots at once, why cannot he be content with snacking? Why must Reynard the fox inflict a uniform holocaust upon the poultry? We suppose it is the same idea as with Hillary and Everest; Because they are there. Time and care and maybe even quiet enjoyment may be taken in thwarting this wanton pillaging of our goods and chattels, sadly the days of the centenarian spinster sallying forth with the twelve bore are no more. A single strand of electric sheep fencing or a thirty inch picket fence will deter Bill Brock, and Reynard will turn his bloody muzzle away from a well constructed and dug-in wire enclosure. Satisfied that the vegetable and live stock are safe we may proceed to the great jobs of the month, namely the harvesting of fruit and the digging-in of dung. Apples and pears remaining on the branch may be picked just as soon as they will readily part from the tree, those allowed to fall will inevitably be bruised and bruises are fatal to the prospects of stored fruits, though not to the making of cider. Raspberries and blackberries may be pruned, cutting out all stems which have borne fruit this year. Main crop potatoes should be lifted as soon as the haulm dies down, there is nothing to be gained by leaving them in the ground and in the event of a wet spell there is every prospect of them making secondary growth. The digging-over and manuring of the ground starts this month, whilst there is warmth left in the soil for the dung to fester down before inert winter sets in. We may begin by Battle of Britain Day and be finished by Trafalgar Day at the latest. The full benefits of dung may only be gained when done hand in hand with deep digging, the best results gained by trenching or bastard digging, which may seem a penance but only after a hard spell of bastard digging may we lean back against the shed to fully savour that long pipe whilst gloating over our superior diligence and work ethic. Some words on dung and his cousins. Plants build themselves from the gases of the air and the minerals in the soil, thus one of the foremost jobs of the gardener is to maintain a productive soil. Traditionally animal manures have been the staple fare, the best is that which has been dry stored, the value of dung is greatly reduced when left for years in the elements. Where possible we should avoid using dung which contains wood chippings or saw dust as these can be detrimental to the soil. Pig and sheep droppings are higher in nitrogen than horse and cow. For heavy soils, being what most of us East-South Saxons are blessed with, we should use strawy manures. For those that can't get their hands on dung, the compost heap is a good substitute. The heap should be built up with alternating layers of green soft stuffs and slightly woody fibrous cuttings. If one has garden lime to hand, a sprinkling every six inches is helpful. Chicken droppings will act as a great accelerator. Faster and better results are gained from a covered heap; a sheet of old corrugated iron or even sacks to keep out excessive rain and to keep in some heat. The compost is ready to use when it smells earthy. For very heavy soils we may contemplate the digging-in of shoddy, a good time to discreetly dig in those Christmas jumpers. Wool shoddy better than cotton shoddy. For those of us that enjoy nothing more than dragging home pleasing items of flotsam from the beach, we may fill our boots with seaweed, which makes an excellent addition to the soil. Green manures are an good substitute for dung, there are

September Gardening Diary many varieties out there and the good gardener should always have a packet of seeds by them; whenever a patch becomes vacant it may be sown and the resulting growth dug in. We shouldn't forget to lime the veg. patch annually, though not for the root beds. Lime has the joyful ability to cause flocculation among the fine particles in clay and so make our soil more workable as well as balancing the acidity caused by heavy cropping from the soil; Lime never to be applied with manures or compost, a three months' gap to be observed. Those keen on onions will be sowing now, the reader having remembered to first prepare the ground with those dry-stored ashes saved from the wood burner. Lettuce and parsley for winter use may be sown on recently vacated ground, dug over but not manured. Evergreen shrubs, including hollies and conifers may be planted now. Rhododendrons may be transplanted but care must be taken to keep the roots from drying out. Early bulbs may be planted, including crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaria and narcissi and also biennials such as wallflowers, foxgloves, canterbury bells and verbascum. Sweet peas may be treated as ordinary autumn-sown hardy annuals, the seeds sown outdoors now where they are to grow next year, choosing a sheltered and well drained spot. We may also be increasing our stock in the borders by division of existing plants. Many fleshy-rooted perennials will take root after division now and may safely face the winter. If left for another six weeks they will be ready for slumber and will then lie inert in cold wet soil, possibly rotting off before the spring awakening. Michaelmas daisies now in flower may become heavy when wet, it is as well to stake these, as tall stems flopped across the lawn are a chastening sight. The growth of vigorous climbers such as clematis and wisteria may be cut back now. Climbing roses will lately have been sending up new shoots, these will bear the best flowers next year and should be tied in now as they are brittle and easily damaged by winter gales. To clothe an arch or middling sized garden structure, an alternative to the climbing rose is to allow a bush rose to keep on growing, less work and easier to manage. More than ever, the hoe will have its work in the borders, September is the great month for weeds and hidden away under the foliage they will do great mischief if overlooked at this late stage, care should be taken not to let them get the upper hand. The days may be shortening but there is no slackening off in the work to be done.

Machu Picchu................................. In this issue The Travel Concept share a blog written by Aurelie, a visitor to Peru… Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic places in South America. It is a mystical place full of history, hidden deep in the Andean Mountains. The high quality of the stonework and the mystery surrounding it makes it a must-see for many people. For this same reason, some may choose to skip Machu Picchu as they feel it is too full of tourists. Nevertheless, I think that most people will find a connection with the citadel, whether that is due to its rich history, the beautiful scenery or for spiritual reasons. The night before my visit, I stayed in the small town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu. It’s a lovely little town with many restaurants and souvenir shops. The town has a sociable atmosphere, and everyone is excited at either the prospect of visiting the citadel – or buzzing from having visited already! The next morning, I woke early, eager to walk up to the ruins (some of the group opted to skip the walk and take the bus up after 7am). It was quite a strenuous walk, but the accomplishment of making it all the way up to Machu Picchu in the manner that the Incans would have originally done it, was an incredible reward. The gates of Machu Picchu open at 6 a.m. Although there was a small queue, it was still relatively quiet. It definitely gets much busier after 12pm, so if you want to avoid the crowds then try to arrive as early as possible. The other incentive to arrive early is to chance to see the morning clouds disperse, revealing the full beauty of Machu Picchu. Our expert local guide took us around the ruins, explaining the incredible story of the Incas. He pointed out the different areas of the city, including the Temple of the Sun and the Intihuatana stone, which is believed to have functioned as a solar clock. There are so many different theories regarding Machu Picchu but to this day its existence remains a mystery, making it absolutely fascinating. By mid-morning, we had walked around the site and decided to continue upwards to Machu Picchu Montaña (Mountain). We were fairly hesitant after our earlier hike but decided that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! After two hours of walking up uneven stairs, we were beginning to fade. However, we persevered and I’m so glad we did! The views were absolutely stunning – such a
64
................ a world of colour, culture and dreams wonderful experience. If you feel Machu Picchu itself is too touristy then you will love Machu Picchu Montaña as only a few brave people tend to make it all the way to the top. As we reached the summit, my sense of accomplishment was huge. This experience was one of the greatest of my life so far, and if you’re heading to Peru then make sure that you visit Machu Picchu too! If Aurelie’s blog has given you a yearning to visit this mysterious and iconic destination, then The Travel Concept has a fantastic ‘Highlights of Peru’ tour with prices starting from just £2,549 per person. They also offer lots of holiday destinations which can be tailored to your specific requirements. Get in touch to find out more…
