ers, d a e R r a De We hope everyone’s ‘back to’ – school, university, work, diet, fitness regime, usual routine went without a hitch after the summer. Your editors had a fun-filled summer with Dawn & family sampling the delights that Florida had to offer whilst our family drove 5,300 miles through France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria & Turkey. We made it back all intact minus our brake pads! We hope whatever you did over the Summer holiday’s you are recharged and refreshed and ready to face Autumn head on. This months’ issue lists all the local bonfire events throughout October & November, plus very exciting news about the Heathfield & District Society’s first bonfire event in Heathfield this year for 62 years! We do love our bonfires in East Sussex, we took some American friends to Battle Bonfire last year and they couldn’t get over the big deal it is here. The celebrations mark both Guy Fawkes Night and the burning of 17 Protestant martyrs in Lewes's High Street from 1555 to 1557, during the reign of Mary Tudor. We are also helping you get winter ready, with some hints and tips to help get your home & garden prepared for what without doubt the Daily Express will be referring to as ‘Arctic winter to hit UK’. The Co-op frontage repair is finally complete, work to the ‘Christmas tree’ base will commence, so we are ready for Christmas. We are looking for a new delivery volunteer for a slot in Horam, please get in touch if you are active & enjoy pounding the streets once a month. Best regards,

cy Dawn & Lu xx Joint Editors

Crows & cowls Corvus Monedula. So-called for their imagined fondness for money, in shiny coin, not notes or cheque. An accusation considered unproven by this chimney sweep as, frustratingly, nothing shiny of any description has he found in any of the multitudinious jackdaw nests he has removed. Whilst on the one hand this short article may be seen as a thinly disguised and blatant attempt to further business, it may be hoped to be salutary and of some use in reducing costs for the customer in the long run. The western Jackdaw, the Jack part of course signifying the diminutive of the daw, being the corvid part. His reputation has historically been something of a curate's egg. Our cousins beyond Offa's Dyke considered the bird holy from its fondness for nesting in church steeples whereas other cultures consider it an omen portending impending death in the household should one enter through a chimney, in others still, a sign of divine favour should one cross the bride's path on the way to the altar. As with all creatures of higher intelligence, they are strictly hierarchical, unwed females being naturally at the bottom of the pecking order, frequently denied food and shelter in times of scarcity and need and generally pecked at and harassed by all the colony. Hard cheese though this may seem, upon marriage, which is life-long, she automatically, irrespective of her own virtues, adopts the status of her husband and without further ado sets about bullying and harassing all those beneath her social status. In spite of their apparent ubiquity, they are not as tremendously fecund as one imagines, only one clutch of eggs being laid annually with no further layings in the event of brood failure. But it is their nesting habits that put them in such bad odour with the householder. From this chimney sweep's long and sad experience of nest removal, it has been observed that nests are usually confined to brick-built chimneys, especially where there is a bend involved, the pair continuously dropping twigs, almost always Ash, until one catches on the bend and so on until an adequate platform has been achieved. The top of this platform is then often lined with a beautifully laid and finished daub of mud, bonded to the chimney walls and tempered with hair for strength and kept scrupulously clean. The sight of a clutch of glossy blue eggs nestled in one of these immaculate saucers is one of life's great glories. But maybe not for the householder who sees nothing of this and who knows only that his long and gleefully anticipated first fire of the season, a great and signal day of autumn, has resulted only in a house-full of acrid smoke, screaming smoke alarms and barking dogs. But it need not be like this. Nests may be removed and a bird and rain guard affixed to the chimney pot, but there is a window for this, Jackdaws will start surveying nest sites and commence building operations in December, and up to nine eggs will be ready to start passing down the oviduct as early as January, it being an offence to interfere with the nest from this time on, we may thus remove nests between July and January. A roof is a treacherous place to be after October, even without frost, the algae and moss attain alarmingly slippery properties and are best shunned. Jackdaws are very much creatures of habit and routine, a pair will always use the same chimney and in the event of the couple both succumbing to the shot gun or van on the Hailsham by-pass, there will assuredly be sons standing by to inherit the family property. If suspicious bird activity is suspected, it may be best not to delay a call to one's sometimes besooten but always helpful chimney sweep. Visits and advice are always freely given.

Dog Food................Part 2 Dry Foods

The majority of British dogs are fed on dry foods. Their popularity owes a lot to their convenience. Dry foods can be produced in a number of ways:Extrusion is by-far the most common cooking method for dry dog foods. A growing number of critics claim that the multiple levels of processing and high temperatures they involve may destroy many of the natural nutrients. Supporters, however, advocate that the cooking process kills parasites and might actually increase digestibility. Baking is an alternative cooking method that allows foods to be cooked at lower pressures than extrusion and therefore may leave more of the nutrients intact. Baking does, however, usually rely on a certain amount of wheat gluten to bind the biscuits. Cold pressed dog foods are growing in popularity rapidly as they present all of the advantages of more conventional dry food processing but without the potentially damaging high temperatures. Ingredients do, however, still have to be dried and ground before pressing and some, like grains, also have to be pre-cooked so there is a certain level of processing, but the final stage is a lot less intensive than extrusion. Air drying takes things one step further as the ingredients usually start the procedure fresh rather than ground or pre-cooked, and the process may reduce the damage to proteins, vitamins and enzymes compared to conventional cooking methods. Some air -dried foods need to be rehydrated by adding water so, while these packs might seem small, the volume of food you get from them is considerably larger. Freeze dried foods are created by first freezing and then gently heating the ingredients within a vacuum to remove any moisture. In this way, the nutrients undergo very little damage making it arguably the most 'natural' form of dry food available. The disadvantage is the cost but they store well without the need for any artificial preservatives. Many freeze dried diets require rehydration with water before feeding. Information taken from www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk. Once you have decided which category of food you would prefer to feed, you can use the filters in this this website to find the best options for your dog. If your dog has any health problems you should consult your vet or a canine nutritionist for advice. Bridgeford’s Best Bites......................... Sciatica - Low Back Pain with Many Causes Sciatica is a common type of pain caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.

Anatomy: The spine typically has 24 vertebrae; 7 neck, 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar. The vertebrae turn on facet joints, arched wing-like structures that stick out either side of the rear part of the vertebrae. They stop the vertebrae from bending and twisting too far and protect the spinal cord, the vital network of nerves running through the centre of each vertebra. Nerves exit the spine from the either side of spaces between two vertebral bodies, separated by an intervertebral disc. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, going from the pelvis, through the buttocks, down the legs to the feet. Intervertebral discs, complex fibro-cartilaginous structures that act as shock absorbers for daily activities separate the vertebrae. They are about 2.5cm in diameter and 5mm thick with a tough, fibrous outer membrane called the annulus fibrous, an elastic core inside called the nucleus pulposus and a cartilaginous endplate. The cells of these structures change as we age; starting as gel, fluid filled sacs in children and hardening to become less elastic and more prone to injury and degeneration with ageing producing pathological symptoms such as back pain and sciatica.

Symptoms: Patients with chronic low back pain and sciatica, experience pain, burning, tingling or numbness radiating down their leg or foot due to compression or irritation of the lumbar nerve root. Pain is often worse when sitting and shooting pain can make it difficult to stand up; there can be pain in the buttock and weakness in the leg or foot. The reasons for this compression can be many and varied and the pain can be debilitating. Urgent medical attention is needed where there is loss of bladder or bowel control or progressive weakness in the lower limb.

Causes: Spinal disc problems such as degeneration, herniation (the disc swells and bulges pressing on nerves) , prolapse (herniation of the nucleus pulposus) can be extremely painful and often need medical treatment. Stenosis, narrowing of the spinal canal from osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, a condition where one vertebra slips forward over another and corda equina all need medical attention. Rare causes can be cysts, epidural veins and tumours, but often there is no obvious cause. Less serious causes can relate to myofascial imbalances, muscle spasms, nerve root irritation, inflammation and postural / biomechanical changes, such as those in pregnancy.

Diagnosis: Thorough neurological and orthopaedic evaluation is needed; X-rays, MRI and CT scans as well as nerve conduction tests can confirm diagnosis. Medical history is taken, reflexes are tested and examination of back, hips, legs for strength and flexibility.

20

........................Osteopathy Tips Treatment: Medical interventions include anti-inflammatory pain medication, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks and surgery. Studies are conflicting about which type of disc surgery is preferred, best timing of surgery and long term outcomes; your doctor will advise you based on a full diagnosis.

Management: Studies are conflicting regarding preferred management. Manipulative therapy showed useful for back pain though not always for sciatica. Targeted exercise and stretching can be helpful; bed rest is not helpful and staying active and strong is important in the long term; though debilitating pain of acute sciatica can make it difficult to exercise. Acupuncture dry needling to specific muscles helped as did targeted deep soft tissue massage. Risk factors: Modifiable risk factors included smoking, obesity, occupational factors and health status. Non-modifiable factors included age, gender and social class. We are happy to advise you on your health matters and offer a free 15 minute spinal check, without obligation. First bonfire night in Heathfield in 62 years! The Diary are very excited to tell you that the Heathfield & District Bonfire Society reprised the group last year and have been working hard behind the scenes to bring bonfire night back to Heathfield with a bang this year. The society (these groups are often referred to as ‘Bonfire Boyes & Belles’) are a group of volunteers who wanted to see Heathfield represented in the annual Sussex celebrations of Guy Fawkes failed coup and to remember the Sussex Martyrs who were persecuted and burnt to death. The last time Heathfield had its own society & bonfire event was back in the nineteen fifties, and H & DBS reckon that after a 62 year wait, it’s time to reinstate this beloved Sussex tradition. The original society existed from 1890-1893 and the bonfire was held at the Cade Street recreation ground (where the war memorial & beacon are). There is a record of a lady being very badly burnt during this period from the ill effects of a ‘Battle rouser’ – a firework created in 1890 in nearby town Battle, shaped long and circular (like a cigar) that you lit at one end and let go on its merry way, whizzing around at random with random sparks coming off, left, right & centre. After this the Heathfield Bonfire Society didn’t get up and running again until the 1950’s, from 1951-1957 and this time round it was held at Tower Rec with the focus being on The Prince of Wales (now The Heathfield Tavern) pub as HQ. Back then the society ‘strip’ was any HDBS visit to the kind of fancy dress including dressing up as a baby in a Isle of Wight circa 1957. pram (we are still trying to source pictures of this!). The procession route for these years is shown in the photo above right, the celebration after the bonfire & fireworks display was held in the large beer garden of the pub (now Heffle Court). So 26th October 2019 will see the Heathfield & District Society kick off their first bonfire night in Heathfield in 62 years to the day. The uniform of this latest society will be the familiar bonfire ‘smugglers’ stripes in the Heathfield flag colours of black, white & green. Other members of the society, known as ‘pioneers’ will dress in the Mexican ‘Day of The Dead’ themed costumes. This time round the event will be help at Heathfield Community Centre on Sheepsetting Lane . Details of the procession & timings will be available in their 2019 programme, which will be available for sale from 12th October in High street shops and also on the High street on the two Saturday’s preceding the event.

TN21 Environmental Aware Green energy is generated from natural and renewable energy sources that can be replenished, as opposed to finite sources such as oil or coal. Studies show many more jobs would be created if investment in clean renewable energy was increased, than in fossil fuels. Supporting technologies that allow renewable electricity generation means sustainable energy systems for life. The excellent article on electric cars by Ian Goswell in the August issue, highlighted the latest improvement, and helps reduce the anxiety about travel times and various charging options. There are 11,000 charging points across the UK, in service stations, car parks, retail sites and private driveways, reducing CO2 emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles. Greta Thunburg and the youth climate strike movement she sparked on 5th March is effective, because of a clear message and simple tactic. Determined to do something herself, addressing politicians and business leaders, causing a wave of global action. A figurehead for a fast growing movement. This is the generation alive today that will be most affected by climate change in the future. The planet we live on, and the world that today’s school children and young people, will grow up to inherit, is in danger. We should support the Youth Climate Strike. “The future for life on earth depends on our ability to take action. Many individuals are doing what they can but real success can only come if there is a change in our Societies, our Economics and our Politics. I’ve been lucky in my lifetime to see some of the greatest spectacles that the Natural World has to offer. Surely we have a responsibility to leave for future generations a Planet that is healthy and inhabitable by all Species“ Sir David Attenborough. Do your bit for the environment, use renewable electricity and gas sustainable sources. It doesn’t take much to start changing the world, a clean green energy supplier. Very simple - one phone call and it is all done for you. The greatest and cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use – even better reducing consumption! Horam Manor Farm, Horam TN21 0JB Behind the newly built Merrydown Village Housing Estate in Horam lies Horam Manor Farm, where you can discover an array of small businesses to delight including Lakeside, a café, bistro and bar. This converted barn from Penrose Farm was blown down in the 1987 hurricane and re-erected where it is today. It now offers a relaxing and slightly quirky venue for home cooked meals with a view over one of the many fishing lakes and woodlands. Martin and Rachel took over in 2010 and have enjoyed growing the business and meeting so many of the villagers and the local businesses on the estate, but still to this day new customers say “We never knew you were here!” to the staff, even those who have lived in Horam for years! How wonderful, that they have found Lakeside at last. An Ideal Venue Lakeside is also available for private hire after closing and is a great venue for a family party with a bar offering a selection of draught lagers and ciders, Sussex best bitter and a selection of spirits including Opening Times a wide variety of local and speciality gins. Food service until Buffets or seated dining is available. Monday 9am ~ 5pm 3pm Tuesday 9am ~ 5pm 3pm Speak to Martin about your requirements. Book early for Christmas! Wonderful willow A few weeks ago, the Diary took part in a willow workshop run by the immensely talented Dominic Parrette from Sussex Willow. Dominic has 18 years of experience creating beautiful willow sculptures, woven plant supports and fencing as well as traditional frame baskets. Luckily for local residents, he teaches other people to create their own sculptures at The Cartlodge, at Horam Manor Farm. Dom runs day courses from 10-4pm, once a month in these beautiful surroundings. Maximum group size is 8 people, to allow for Dom to give the right amount of support to each eager pupil. I have to be honest and say that I have never been blessed with a ‘crafty’ side, that anything I have created has generally taken 3 times as long as everyone else, making the exact same thing. But the experience, isn’t just about the end result (thank goodness), it’s also about learning a new skill, slowing down for a while and getting completely absorbed with something that is incredibly tactile. I didn’t hold out high hopes for my creation on the course to look anything like it should, but was up for having a go. This course was to make a willow fox; I was hoping it might look vaguely like one, if only to deter any more poultry genocides in my back garden. Dom made it all seem very easy. He broke the process into mini stages, helping us to create the ‘sub-frame’ from buff willow, using wire and a few crafty zip ties to hold it all together. We were then taught how to create the haunches and chest of our fox using more willow, followed by the head, snout, ears and tail. Towards the middle of the afternoon, we began the process of ‘filling in, adding depth and shape’ to our fox. What was incredible was that everyone’s fox was uniquely different, some looked life-like & slinky and others like mine, more like a deer/ vulpine hybrid! Dominic offered calm and assured help to anyone that needed it. As the workshop due to a close, we were all completely obsessed and kept finding places to fill in or enhance our pieces. Dom offered the opportunity to take more willow home, so you could continue to work on your sculpture. However, he made the fatal error of making more tea (with home-made biscuits), which the majority of us took as a signal to continue feverishly ‘finishing’ our animal there and then. It’s been a long time since I did anything like this, that demanded my complete attention, the hours passed in a flash and it was just so relaxing. Some of the other people on the course said it felt like therapy, it certainly was a welcome day away from the usual chores! So if you fancy something different, or want to treat someone you love to something special, why not check out Dominic’s courses at www.sussexwillow.co.uk Lucy, Editor.

October Gardening Diary ‘For every fog in October, a snow in winter.' The piece of gardening lore quoted above couldn't in any way have been more inaccurate for this last twelve months but as we are fond of old traditional proverbs, we are resolved to repeat it annually until it bears fruit. Rain, wind and cloud characterise our weather in October, though we may hope for an Indian summer about the middle of the month when a short spell of mellow anticyclonic weather often occurs. We should be taking full advantage of these gentle spells to finish up our autumn digging. Deadline Trafalgar Day. All species of weeds made a strong showing in September, so that hoe should be doing brisk work, for great mischief they will do if left unchecked at this late season. We may now make a start with tidying up the perennials in the herbaceous border, some gardeners prefer to leave the old topgrowth on the plant for winter protection whilst some like to clear away the old growth once flowering is finished leaving to leave a more shipshape and tidy border. A tidier border feels healthier and less prone to harbouring disease and mould over the winter and also allows the soil to be more effectively forked over. Dahlias may be lifted once the foliage has blackened, there is little point in leaving them in beyond the end of the month as tuber growth will be completed by then. Around the middle of the month we can may start planting out wallflowers, polyanthus, forget-me-nots, sweet williams, canterbury bells, foxgloves and other similar plants which are grown as biennials or for a spring bedding display. Before putting these in, the soil should be dug to a spades' depth. Fertiliser may be added but only of the slow releasing types, i.e bone meal and not a quick release nitrogen based spring or summer fertiliser. The last cut of the lawn will now take place, the blade height may be lifted; no golf green cuts in October. The vegetable plot. Push ahead with autumn digging. We dwelt on dung and his cousins at length in the last issue but it is worth reminding ourselves again that September and October are the months to dig in old horse droppings or compost, especially important for brassicas, not too much for the root crops or you may end up with amusingly shaped vegetables next year. Bastard trench heavy ground, throwing in newspaper, Christmas jumpers, gossip magazines, sharp sand, compost and rats, anything to improve the texture and workability of our clay. Only after a morning of bastard trenching may we, without guilt or self-reproach, indulge in that long pipe in the potting shed. Make the most of the last of the Runner and French beans by picking all sizeable beans daily, especially if frost is forecast. Autumn sown broad beans are a must, a sturdy two inch bean plant seen at Christmas makes a happy sight and bodes well for an early and black fly resistant crop in spring. In anticipation of rain and gale, it is very important to firmly stake Brussels sprouts. All brassicas need to be firmly planted; they greatly resent any movement or looseness around the roots. Top growth of Jerusalem artichokes can be cut down but no need to lift the roots as they may be dug as required. Beware of a surfeit of this root in polite company. Sites for November planting of fruit trees may be thoroughly prepared now by digging in plenty of old manure with a handful of bonemeal. It pays to do this well in advance of planting to allow the mix to fester down and the air to escape, likewise new rose beds should be thoroughly prepared, especially so on our clay soil. Rambler roses may now be pruned

and trained, the aim is to cut out as much of the growth that has already flowered, those that make strong growth from the base should have the old stems cut out at ground level whilst those which make little basal growth should have the old growth cut back to a point just above that at which the strong new growth starts. Now that the last of the Indian wickets have fallen and our bowlers and batsmen have emerged as record breaking heroes, there is no excuse not to be out there in the garden, there are jobs to do wherever we look and we are losing three minutes of light a day, so we can ill afford any tardiness in the garden please.

COMMUNITY Young at Heart closed for August but we hosted a stand at the French Market which proved a huge success! The market was very well attended with lots of positive feedback. We were right next to the stage and as a result we danced all day - even though it was a very hot day! Fantastic community spirit and plenty of talented participants! Angela who sings with us sang with her Cake and Wine Club members followed by her band. We are extremely fortunate to have her enthusiastic involvement with Young at Heart! We restarted on 3rd September with Little Tinkers Nursery School joining us with their new set of older children. We say a fond farewell to the children who joined us for the last year as they all start “big school” but would welcome any back for tea and cake! Please call Rachel on 07971 032667 if you have a family member or friend who might be interested in joining us! Kindly sponsored by Axell Eames.

A river trip fit for an Empress! In the August edition of Horam & Vine Cross News we wrote an article about whether or not a cruise holiday would be a choice of holiday you would be interested in and whilst we do not intend to go over old ground, it appears that this is a subject that many people are interested in. Recently, Tracy followed her own advice and enjoyed a cruise on the River Rhine. Here she shares her experiences with you… “I thoroughly enjoyed my first river cruise on Uniworld’s ‘River Empress’ – no sea sickness, a different city and experience every day, outstanding food and service, relaxed and intimate surroundings – what’s not to love? Uniworld ships are like floating boutique hotels, each one unique and stylish, literally a work of art! The rooms are spacious and sumptuous – Savoir beds and a pillow menu – needless to say I slept like a baby. The food was some of the best I have had. Uniworld don’t stock-up; supplies are picked up at each stop using local farmers and producers. The menus are different every day and they are created to give you a flavour of where you are visiting and include wines. Each day a new experience, an array of excursions to choose from – some active, some more sedate and a few unique options thrown in. Most days I was spoilt for choice! The service is what truly sets Uniworld apart. The staff-to-guest ratio is the highest in the industry and they employ their own staff. Their knowledge and ‘nothing is too much trouble’ attitude is a breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed the soups and without asking they gave me the recipes… it’s the little things that make a big difference. There is a huge choice of river cruises on the market, however in my opinion Uniworld are exceptional and when comparing prices remember with Uniworld everything is included even the flights! During my time on-board I made a short video which can be found on our website which will also help to give you some idea of what you can expect and I am always happy to discuss any aspects of river cruising with you should you have any other concerns. You can find the video at: https://thetravelconcept.co.uk/river-cruise-experience.html Picking the right holiday is essential, with our knowledge and experience, we can not only get you the best deal but the best cruise to suit you personally. Why not make the most of our latest Uniworld offer – EXCLUSIVE TO THE TRAVEL CONCEPT. See the advert opposite for details.

Pick It Up Put It Down Reaches Fundraising Target for Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex! ‘Pick It Up Put It Down’ - local fundraiser for the Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex ignited our Sussex Summer - as promised - on the 10th of August, with; live music, entertainment, athletic competitions and local food and refreshments. The event began in memory of local athlete and butcher Dan Osborne who passed away in a car accident, has moved forward celebrating fitness and fun while donating all of it’s profits to the Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex who were one of the emergency services at the scene after the accident took place. The day launched into an explosive start with the PIUPID Games, where 110 athletes from across Sussex, ascended to Heathfield Rugby Club to test their strength, stamina, and agility, as mixed pairs in a 15 minute top secret workout. This year the Games offered a brand new challenge, inviting 10 mixed teams consisting of two men and two women, to take on a newly designed challenge that we’ve never seen before. Winners of the Pair Event; Tara Sanger and Daniel Hunter-Evans, the Team Event; Katie Hickling, Liam Smith, Amanda Martin and Ted Sardar and the Masters Category; Teresa Barford and Mark Griffin, who are all local residents - have been training for months to have achieved podium finishes. As the weather settled towards the evening and the athletes returned alongside hundreds of local residents, PIUPID Sundown - the evening festival - turned on the sound to local big-band The Big Kahuna, King Konga, DJ M-Froning and plenty of entertainment, from Festival Face-Painting, photo-booths, live auction and the hand-shaken cocktails at the signature PIUPID Bar - ‘The Bar-Bell’. Louis Chavannes, founder and organiser said “I am so incredibly proud of everyone who is a part of the event, from our volunteers, organising team, athletes, spectators and attendees. It is a true product of community spirit and generosity, and the support it generates for the Air Ambulance is invaluable. We are very close to confirming the exact funds we have raised, but I am over the moon to be able to say that we have met our target of bringing our funds raised over the last 5 years to over £20,000!” A number of local businesses and sponsors have been supporting the event: Kay & Pascoe LLP, Talent Team, Strength Vitality, Tower Gate, Coppards, Isenhurst, Pomfrets, Vince Building, N Smith Electrical, Halcyon and Sussex Steel Construction Ltd. PIUPID will be re-igniting the summer on the 1st of August 2020. You’re all invited!
