ers, d a e R r a De We hope you had a good Easter and had time to catch up with family & friends? Hopefully, by the time you are reading this work will have begun on the Horam Co-op frontage for completion by 17th May. Further investigation into the mystery smell has revealed the cause. It’s an issue with the run off from the freezer units in store, with water collecting and becoming stagnant underneath the floor. Solutions to this are being explored, so hopefully it will be sorted out soon. Don’t forget the annual community fund that the Co-op offer to local groups and societies, launches for this year on 18th May. In addition to this, there is a separate fund which groups can also ask for donations for fundraising amounts. Pop in store to see Karen Ellis, the Co-op member Pioneer for Horam & Heathfield or visit www. coop.co.uk and search for local community funding for more information. This month we have even more local content - including a great historical article about the origins of Horam Chapel courtesy of Nicola Walker, local historian and custodian of the Heathfield, Horam, Hellingly & Villages in Old Photographs Facebook page; a point of view from a local nature lover; our Diary of A Villager and a first-hand account of surviving ovarian cancer from an inspirational local lady. Our own local litter picking group started collecting rubbish around Horam last month to clean up the areas in the village not covered by the Parish Council’s litter man. Big thank you to Horam WI for instigating this and co-ordinating the local volunteers. Air pollution seems to be in the news of late. Many local councils are beginning to monitor levels of air pollution as more evidence is revealed about the serious health effects– one third of deaths worldwide from stroke, lung cancer and heart disease are due to air pollution. Local environmental group TN21 Enviromental are working on building & testing a unit to measure the levels in Horam. We are always keen to hear from our readers – if you have an interesting hobby or would like to share a day in your life – at work or in the community, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us an email to the address below. Best regards,

PLANNING UPDATE Rosemead
Bovis have advised that archaeology work is currently being undertaken, and is expected to continue for at least three weeks*. Ecologists are also carrying out work concurrently, and they are expected to be on site for a minimum of six weeks*. In the coming weeks, the team will be looking to clear the next field, and establish temporary access to the site, which will allow them to install the site compound. As work progresses towards the start of home building, the Bovis Homes team will be looking to strengthen the site team and recruit build specialists to fill key roles on site, and would welcome applications from the local community. The team are currently looking to recruit an experienced telehandler (CPCS cardholder) as well as a labourer (with a valid CSCS card). Anyone interested in these roles should contact Site Manager Jamie Miller Hudson at Jamie.MillerHudson@bovishomes.co.uk Bovis advised that this site ‘will eventually become home to a total of 123 one to fivebedroom properties, of which 43 will be designated as muchneeded affordable housing, including a mix of rented and shared ownership homes. The plans also include provision for children’s play areas, as well as extensive landscaping, including enhanced woodland, and large areas of public open space’. The Diary asked if the developer could avoid netting hedges and trees as this is a major issue currently nationwide. Bovis declined to answer this question.
Bimbo’s Woodyard
Reptile fencing (the green stuff) around the part with planning consent has been erected.

The official opening date for this facility has been put back to May 2019 (originally March 2019). There will be open days in May and information for local businesses on how to engage with the crematorium at some point during this month.

Maynards Green Community Primary School Year 4 Forest School
This term we have enjoyed time in the great outdoors. We have been looking for signs of the changing seasons as Winter turned into Spring. When we got to the woods, me, Keira and Robert saw something amazing; the holly seed we planted last year had grown into a little holly tree! We were so pleased! After that, we went and built a bug hotel out of a hollowed out part of a tree. By then, it was raining, and we thought of making a shelter. Sadly, it was time to go back to school.
Whilst walking along the Cuckoo Trail, we had to look for 3 things: • two sticks, no bigger than the length from your elbow to your finger • signs of Spring • and if we could notice any difference between opposite sides of a tree trunk. We found out that moss often grows on one side of a tree which is the north side because it is the side the sun never gets to. Moss likes dark, damp places to grow; this place is ideal. Knowing this little tip can be helpful if you’re stuck or lost and want to know where North is. By Ewan. Churches Together in Heathfield & District

Country Life On all his past perambulations through the countryside around Horam the writer can't recall a more effulgent year for hazel catkins. It seemed during February and March that every hedge and copse was alight with the bright yellow streamers. We aren't immediately reminded of any folklore about a good filbert year but a set of conditions must have come together to produce such a display. We might suppose this abundance will lead to a bumper cobnut year and a corresponding increase in Dormouse numbers. We have two species of Dormouse, the common russet coloured beast so familiar as well as a much more limited ancient Italian immigree, larger, less coloured and known as the Edible dormouse, a great Roman delicacy. A nasty thought and thankfully since the Romans left our island we haven't seen any Graham Chapman lookalikes hawking otter's noses, lark's tongues or jugged dormice. Dormice, as their name implies, spend most of their time sleeping and thus have longer lives than most of their rodent kind, up to four years, and being too laid back and sleepy to afflict man with myriads of offspring has further endeared themselves to human kind. One of the great joys of an Autumn stroll along the hedgerows must be the discovery of the miniature Dutch clogs so meticulously fashioned out of cobnuts by these patiently knawing rodents. But before they can gorge on filberts they must feast on honeysuckle nectar and more worryingly, caterpillars. Dormice, being of the Rodentidae are natural fodder for owls and most aerial raptors. These hunters and scavengers appear to have increased dramatically over the last ten years. The writer hasn't looked at the statistics but has himself noticed a marked increase in numbers for all manner of birds. As a boy, whilst out on bird-watching expeditions, armed only with binoculars, penknife and margarine and white sugar sandwiches, we were denied such common sights as goldfinches, buzzards both common and honey, kites, ravens, peregrine falcons, migrating osprey, herons and many other species which seem almost everyday sights now. To this list we may balance a decline in house sparrows ( Though the colony living in the author's soffits are still going strong since 1928) and starlings and there can be no finer adornment to a garden than a murmuration of these spivs of the avian world shrieking and squabbling around the bird table. But even these are appearing more numerous over the last couple of years. A very sad story though is the decline in swallow numbers. Year on year for twenty summers we have watched a steady decline, probably down 90% over this period. As we know, a major cause are certain elements in the Spanish population who think it a joy to take the twelve bore to migratory birds at the Strait of Gibraltar, rather hard cheese for a bird, weighing less than a 50p piece, which has already winged its way right across Africa from the Cape and across the endless expanse of the Sahara. Though the omnipotent EU appear to indulge this sport there is no doubt that EU environmental legislation has led to the general increase in bird numbers in the UK. It may be hoped that this is one legacy of EU membership we may retain. But alas we can't blame the Europeans for everything. Rapacious greed is also to blame, one has in mind again the transparent villainy and greed and corruption with led to the Rosemead

Country Life development on Horebeech Lane. What the so-called wildlife surveys carried out on this land (at great cost to the owner, who was of course quite unsure as to whether her application would be approved and carried out before the planning application had been officially received by Wealden Council) didn't pick up on was that this was a wet field, full of springs and so a tremendous reservoir of insect life, and being orientated roughly East-West, was a perfect hunting ground for swallows which would congregate on the power lines in the adjacent field (the field abutting Laundry Lane, with the footpath to Vines Cross Road) waiting for sunset and at the right moment sally forth to scoop up the flying insects then back-lit by the setting sun. Now the diggers have scraped the field away to build 123 orange nylon boxes we won't expect the returning swallows to breed here again. But let us not overshadow the natural wonders of Spring with such dark ruminations. Though so much of rural England has been lost to enrich the shareholders and directors of national house building firms, we may go on seeking and observing the works of art in the great gallery of nature and hopefully be the happier for it and in fear that the neglect of such joy-giving beauty may lead us to being banished to that limbo where Dante tells us reside those that during their earthly lives 'Wept when they might be joyful'.

The Arrival and growth of the Maynards Green Assembly In 1859 – the year that Charles Darwin published the revolutionary ‘Origin of Species’ - John Noakes, a general shopkeeper and his two sons attended an open-air gospel assembly in Burwash – one of many that were sweeping across the country at this time. The religious preaching had such a phenomenal effect on these unassuming ‘working class’ Sussex men that they returned home ‘saved’ by The Lord, determined to share their new belief with the community. The following year, Mr Noakes and his sons commenced work in the communities around Burwash spreading the glad tidings. This included Maynards Green where they walked the eighteen-mile round trip to organise and attend gospel testimony – usually in a local field, where a number were also inspired. After, the growing group would meet in a local cottage to ‘break bread’ together – members of the Haffenden, Rumary and Delves families amongst them. In 1867, funds were raised for a cottage in Maynards Green to be purchased, allowing meetings and worship to be held all year round. In fact, the assembly was so successful that just 8 years later, a site was acquired, and a Gospel Hall known as ‘Delves Chapel’ was opened. It measured 21 x 19 feet and held 60 worshippers but as time went on it was not unusual for 100 to attend any meeting, pressing into and overflowing out of the building.
The first Gospel Hall – ‘Delves Chapel’.
By this time, the Chapel was also attracting people from as far as Brighton, arriving by train from Hailsham – the nearest station – and walking seven miles up the Horeham Road to stay the weekend. By 1880 the Horeham Road and Waldron Station was opened, and the closer transportation links resulted in yet more visitors from Eastbourne, Hastings and further afield, keen to listen to the message of the gospel.
The car a travelling preacher used to visit Maynards Green.
By 1905, it was decided to build a new and much larger hall and a 43 x 29 ft building was constructed a short distance from the old chapel, which would accommodate 250 to 300 people and was known as ‘the New Gospel Hall’. By 1908, this was licenced for weddings and later funerals although burials would always take place in the churchyard at the Independent Chapel at Chapel Cross.
The Great War touched Maynards Green as it did every other town and village across Sussex and beyond but the community still retained the faith and the community was strong.
26
The minutes held for the Church School at Maynards Green report that in 1920, the Head teacher Mr J Jervis requested that the school close for the annual Gospel Hall Sunday School treat as it was anticipated that out of 151 children currently on the
register, at least 100 would be absent for this occasion, which was agreed by the school managers. The Sunday School treat was usually held on Delves Field and consisted of sports, games and tea and was a much-anticipated event. It was usual for itinerant preachers to regularly visit, pitching up in a caravan or staying locally and preaching in the Hall or if the weather allowed - outdoors. In the summer, often a marquee was erected at Delves Field. The preacher would often move on to the Vines Cross Chapel afterwards. In 1925, there was an address by ‘Mr Gordon The 1914 Whit Monday gathering outside the ‘New Gospel Hall’, Maynards Smith of British Ghana’ which attracted around 300 worGreen shippers and, on another occasion, the local newspaper specifically remarked that there had been a ‘coloured’ preacher in attendance. Often tea was provided in the Maynards Green School. The railway and the Second World War changed the communities of Maynards Green and Horam and as time went on the hamlet at Maynards Green diminished and the village of Horam grew. In 1994, the ‘New Gospel Hall’ was sold and a new purpose-built chapel was built in Horam in 1995, where it continues to be a popular and well supported local church today. CLEANING UP HORAM
The Diary, on behalf of the local community would like to thank Horam WI for helping to set-up and coordinate our very own litter picking group in Horam! We now have a group of local volunteers who will be working together to keep Horam tidy. The group kicked off their efforts last month as part of the month-long Great British Spring Clean campaign supported by Wealden District Council. The Great British Spring Clean is a campaign with one simple aim: to bring people across the country together to clear up the litter that blights our environment. Wealden District Council is again supporting the campaign by providing equipment, refuse bags and waste collection services for Wealden volunteer litter picking groups. Last year they supported 37 groups of volunteers who collected some 2.5 tonnes of litter at events across the district. Thank you to our volunteers for giving up their time to make our village a nice place to live.

A busy time at Hidden Spring Vineyard! Not content with bottling over 11,000 bottles of their own wines on site for the first time ever last month, Chris & David still found time to run some brilliant events at the vineyard. Early April saw a great charity quiz night to raise funds for Phabkids, an organisation that provides residential activity holidays for children with disabilities. The evening was a great success with £1,008.20 being raised. Thanks to everyone who took part! They also launched their series of Dinner At The Vineyard events, kicking off with two tapas evenings. Horam Home Kitchen supplied the delicious Spanish dishes, whilst hosts Chris & David supplied the the stunning wine. The Diary’s Editors took it upon ourselves to enjoy an evening at Hidden Spring (for research purposes only, of course) and came away happy and full. The food was absolutely amazing and the Hidden Spring Vineyard Bacchus (2016) with it’s fresh & floral elderflower, pear and white peach tones was the perfect wine to accompany the robust flavours of the dishes we ate. The service was top notch too, unobtrusive and we didn’t have to wait for anything. Check out their ad on P10 for details of forthcoming events. Don’t forget their special offer for May, see voucher P70.

COMMUNITY TN21 Environment Aware Ash Tree Dieback popular native tree (Fraxinus escelsior) One of our most common native trees across the uk, often used for making tool handles. Ash Tree Dieback is caused by a deadly tree fungus (Chalara), spreading more quickly than predicted. It causes leaf loss, crown dieback and bark lesions, in infected trees and spread by the release of spores. The disease is usually fatal, it blocks the water transport system, which causes the problem in trees. First detected in the UK in 2012. A battle to save Ash trees covers Europe. These trees are very important ecologically for nesting birds, insects, rare lichens and moss. There is a risk that some of these species could be lost or severely affected. We can’t afford to ignore the effect Ash Tree Dieback could have on our woodland life. Millions of trees near buildings, roads and railways will have to be cut down. Trees could be protected from devastating Dieback disease with the help of natural soil treatment claim researchers. In 2016 one tree ‘Betty’ was found to be resistant growing alongside diseased trees, and more have been identified. Seeds from resistant trees could be saved and planted in an orchard, and would take decades to grow, instead of hundreds of years. At present there is a ban on any Ash tree seed movement for bio security reasons. More information from Woodland Trust. Tel: 0800 026 9650 Email: woodlandtrust.org.uk Ruth Buckingham

Mireille’s Story When you are 39 you feel nothing can stop you, you are in prime health, you are unstoppable. I had two kids aged 7 and 11, and life was busy. I had lost weight and was feeling quite proud of how I looked. Whilst in the bath one day I noticed my tummy felt hard, my time at the gym was paying off or so I thought. Over a short period of time I began to notice other changes in my usual toileting habits, these changes were extremely subtle, but I began to take notice. I didn’t make an appointment with the doctors, I just waited for a medication review and tagged it on to the end of the appointment. In the future I would learn how lucky I was, having a female doctor who knew her stuff. After an examination I was booked in for an ultrasound, and so the raft of scans and blood tests began. Doctors confirmed I had a very large mass but thought that this could be benign, but surgery was needed soon. The surgery turned out to be huge, as well as the removal of a 19cm cyst, they performed radical hysterectomy, removed lymph nodes, my omentum and appendix. After five and a half hours of surgery, I came round to a still optimistic surgeon. The relief was short lived, the pathology results revealed cancer but also two forms of the disease. I was informed if the surgery was six weeks later it would have been too late. So once recovered from the surgery, chemotherapy began. Why am I telling you this, I hear you say? Well, once my chemo was finishing, I became involved in a charity called Target Ovarian Cancer and met other women who had gone through the same thing. It was at this point I realised just how lucky I was! Many of these women had gone back and forth to their GPs convinced something was wrong.
54
Mireille’s Story They had become bloated, had changes to their toilet habits but were just told it was their age or they had IBS.By the time some ladies had been back and forth to the doctors six or so times, it was too late for them. As a family we became involved with the charity fundraising and attending focus groups etc. Target Ovarian Cancer noticed how women’s concerns were being brushed off by GPs and created a Continuing Professional Development teaching package for GPs to high light the importance of early diagnosis in the cancer. The fact that IBS rarely presented itself in the forties and not only menopausal women were affected by this devastating cancer. This CPD package was so good it became awarded winning.Target Ovarian cancer continue to raise awareness of the disease and support research. Ladies if you have these symptoms, please get checked out by the GP and don’t take no for an answer if you feel these signs and symptoms are not being taken seriously, quick actions save lives. And me, well ten years on I am well, happy and most of all grateful to a Mireille enjoying a night out with the Diary GP that took me seriously. Editor’s!

May Gardening Diary ' A wet and windy May, fills the barns with corn and hay. ' We are informed that May is statistically one of the driest months of the year, when damp westerly airstreams are less common, this anticyclonic weather may lead to night frosts and May frosts are the bane of all gardeners. Really tender subjects like dahlias, begonias, cannas, etc, may be best planted nearer the end of the month. In the borders and vegetable garden routine hoeing should be carried on. At the risk of becoming a hoe bore, the value of a Dutch hoe cannot be overstated; regular hoeing destroys weeds, loosens compaction, aerates the soil and breaks up the capillary action and so reduces evaporation. The borders are left looking fresh and ship-shape. A hoe vigorously plied is one of the great aids to good growth. For those gardeners with 'Hoers' Elbow', the alternative is the mulch. The main rules are that it should be laid deep, at least four inches and away from any stems, the ground should have first had a thorough soaking (From rain, not hose), this locked-away moisture may be retained for a considerable time. Any raw or uncomposted material should be avoided. Green waste, wood shavings, straw or wood bark, when used fresh may lead to denitrification of the soil. Yes, bacteria in the soil which usually convert nitrogen into useable nitrates can become starved of oxygen and so are forced to separate the oxygen molecules from the soil-bound nitrates, which are then lost to the atmosphere. We write this not only to appear clever and well-read, it really does happen, especially on undug slightly acid soil - that being just what we have here in our corner of the county. If mulch you must, then a thorough diggingover and removal of perennial weeds followed by a dressing of nitrogen should be carried out first. In the vegetable patch it is important to thin previously sown crops, this job brooks no delay; overcrowding in the nursery can weaken and distend plants to such a degree that they may never fully recover their figures, their health and their vigour. This is the beginning of the season proper for the biting and sucking pests, since the EU has scotched the more effective sprays and chemicals, so that our old favourites DDT, arsenic and Agent Orange are no longer available, alternatives should be found to keep pests down. We hear talk of garlic sprays... Strawberry beds may be matted or have straw laid down and runners not required for propagation may be removed as they develop. We may now sow seeds of French and runner beans in those deep compost filled trenches the reader prepared in March. Peas, carrots, parsnip, lettuce, radish and spinach may also be sown now.
62
May Gardening Diary Brussels sprouts need a long season to fully develop so the quicker they can be transplanted to their permanent quarters, the better. Brassicas always planted firmly. It is customary to pinch out the tops of broad beans when in flower, this should greatly reduce the black fly problem, especially on those plants which weren't started off last October. Early potatoes should be earthed up little and often. Rhododendrons and azaleas may have any dead flowers picked off to allow new growth to form. Any pruning here must be carried out immediately after flowering and before next year's flower buds form. As daffodils and other early flowering bulbs finish flowering it is as well to remove dead flowers to prevent seed formation and encourage the growth of bulbs. Irksome and unsightly obstacles to our mowers they may be, but the dying foliage must be allowed to wither in its own time. Any remaining pruning of Forsythia may now be completed, leaving the youngest shoots, as they will bear the best blooms next year. We are advised not to 'Cast a clout 'till May is out', there is confusion over this saying; it might refer to the month itself or that we must not cast any clouts until the May Tree (Hawthorn) is out, during the months of May and June, either way, we may be mindful of the possibility of late and damaging frosts. We may also gain some postponement of that finest sight of Spring, namely the first sightings of the seminaked, tattooed and egg-white young gentlemen strutting up Horam High Street.

The Diary of a Villager
Did you make Sloe Gin last autumn from the berries of the blackthorn bush? If you did, you may be ready to strain your gin. Leaving you with a bowl of plump, ginsoaked sloes. On Twitter the other day, someone had strained her sloe gin. She wondered whether the sloes could be used for something else before throwing them away. Oh yes, they can. Sloe Port is not technically port. It is a fortified wine, with sloe gin plus brandy added to red wine. You would be hard pressed to find a smoother, more delicious drink to enjoy in front of a warm fire than homemade Sloe Port. And as we come into Summer, this is the perfect time to make it. You’ll be glad you did when the nights start drawing in again. You can make Damson port from Damson Gin in the same way. It is equally delicious.
Sloe Port Recipe – 1 litre
You will need • About 500g of left-over sloes from drained sloe gin • 1 750ml bottle of cheap red wine • 100g sugar • 200ml brandy • A clean preserving jar with a flip top lid.
Making Sloe Port
Method
Put the gin-soaked sloe berries, sugar and red wine into the jar and seal. Shake every day for 3 weeks to dissolve the sugar. Then add the brandy and shake well. Stick in a corner somewhere dark and forget about it (I know) for at least 3 months. When you’re ready to drink your port, strain it again. This time your sloe berries will only be good for the bin unfortunately, but they can at least feel they’ve given wonderful service. Decant into bottle, leave for a couple of weeks to settle and enjoy. Page 1 of 1 Bev Toogood AlmostOffGrid.co.uk/blog

Sew Lovely by Jilly was created by Jilly Wingfield who has an obsession for clothes, shoes and accessories. Jilly was fed up with high street stores and wanted more individual boutique pieces, but at affordable prices. With help from a friend Sew Lovely by Jilly was born – the launch being in Burwash village in September 2016. Sew Lovely by Jilly started with “pop up shops” in the local area and also house parties. It has now gone from strength to strength and Jilly opened her private dressing room in January 2018. Appointments are available 7 days a week and a personal shopping service is offered as standard in a relaxed atmosphere. Pop by, have a glass of fizz and enjoy ‘sociable shopping’ at its best! Groups of friends are welcome too – why not get the girls together for an afternoon of giggles. Jilly has clothing for all shapes and sizes as well as shoes and jewellery.
