Signs of Spring are all around us. It’s a time when the promise of things to come at the end of Winter gives us all hope. What are you hoping for this month? Possibly not hearing the word Brexit?! Whilst the B word may have temporarily stalled business activity across the UK, closer to home there is lots of movement. Horam & Heathfield appear to be bucking the national trend with new businesses opening, new community groups launching and new local trader offers. This month we are looking to continue to support our local businesses by shopping local, give the big towns a miss and sample what is on offer on our doorstep. See P23 for local offers you don’t want to miss out on. You may not have been in any of these local shops for a while, do pop in to remind yourself how blessed we are to have such great local traders offering top quality goods & services. So whether it’s a leg of lamb, local daily baked bread, a beautiful bunch of flowers, milk in glass bottles, a fabulous slice of cake or some vintage, unique gifts & homewares – it’s all within walking distance! Delve into the diary for some great places to eat & shop to show your Mum how much you care for Mother’s Day! (31st March). The Co-op have advised that they are still in discussions with Post Office Ltd about the possibility of having a Post Office in-store – so no new news here yet. They are just waiting for a start date for repairs to their frontage. We hope you enjoy some new content in this month’s Diary. Some local history, a new column from a local the ‘Villager’s Diary’ and more. We are always keen to hear from our readers – if you have an interesting hobby or would like to share a day in your life – at work or in the community, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us an email to the address below.

PLANNING UPDATE

Several readers have already raised issues about parking on the road (especially with poor sightlines over bridge), damage to the bridge with heavy plant machinery & building materials being delivered, mud on the road etc. So the Diary have asked Bovis to keep the Diary updated. They have advised that the contractors parking will be located on site, and an effective construction management is in place to ensure damage to the existing highways will be minimised and any issue will be rectified accordingly. The development is also subject to a Section 278 agreement with East Sussex County Council to provide a range of offsite highway improvement works along Horebeech Lane, which will be commencing shortly. We have also been advised that the bridge, similarly to the roundabout, also needs lighting due to the new priority feature that has been approved. According to Bovis, the lighting positions have been strategically located and kept to a minimum, with 9 out of the 10 proposed street lamps positioned on the northern side of Horebeech Lane to reduce the impact on residents, whilst keeping safety a priority. Ultimately this is a requirement and determination of ESCC. Both the Residents Association & Horam Parish Council have made comments to ESCC about the number of lights being excessive.

Works carried out to date

In terms of the work they have carried out to date, this has included an ecological mitigation strategy, archaeology investigations, fencing enhancements to the northern boundary, and demolition of the existing farm buildings. However, the County Archaeologist Team are NOT happy. An email from them to Wealden in December 2018 states “The work that has been undertaken has identified large areas of archaeological remains” and advised that further investigation is required, but complained that “the heavy handed ecological clearance work* which has left the site in a total mess and damaged archaeological remains” is not acceptable. A Bovis Homes spokesman said: “We can confirm that a revised WSI has been submitted to the planning authority, outlining the further archaeological work to be carried out. We would also like to reiterate that we remain committed to ensuring that all the archaeological and ecological work that we are funding is carried out in accordance with our obligations and look forward to working closely with the local community while we deliver these much-needed new homes.” Bovis have also made their first CIL payment to Wealden District Council equating to a sum of c£1.3m, which they say should also enable the local authority to bring forward much needed infrastructure projects in the locality. The Resident’s Association & Parish council will be following this up with WDC.Further landscape and initial foundation works are also due commence soon. *This involves the turning over of all the soil with diggers to prevent local species from returning to the site.

Bimbo’s Woodyard

Fencing & plant machinery have gone up recently on this site for 2 large executive homes, but no work has yet begun.

Southside (Horebeech Lane)/Hedgerows (A267 by May Garland)/Coxlow Farm No more news or planning applications for any of the above.

Crematoriam

Work continues with road closures and traffic works alongside the entrance into the site. You are now able to see the structure from the road. This modern, multi-faith facility will include a Chapel to seat over 120 mourners, a Flower Court and a landscaped Garden of Remembrance. Provisions will include a car parking for 150 vehicles and a separate waiting area. A one hour slot will be allowed for each service. No applications for houses as yet.

Wealden Local Plan

A Planning Inspector was appointed at the end of January 2019. She is in the process of studying the plan. All enquiries relating to the examination should be submitted to the Local Plan Programme Officer Lynette Benton, who has been appointed to support the Inspector during the examination process. The Programme Officer may be contacted by email lynette.benton@wealden.gov.uk; by post FAO Local Plan Programme Officer, Wealden District Council, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, BN27 2AX or telephone on 07977 415678.

ADVERTISING ENQUIRIES HVCVILLAGEDIARY@GMAIL.COM

Mother’s Day – is it just a clever marketing idea from the USA? Where would we be without our Mums? However young or old you are – your Mum is often the centre of your universe. At around six or seven months, babies begin to realise that they are separate from you and not the same person. As toddlers our Mum is the person who kisses our tears away and sticks the plasters on. During our teenage years when we are beginning to find out our own character and shape our image, we don’t need her so much for hugs but much more for lifts, cash and food. Often it takes till you have your own children, to look back and reflect on how much your mum has cared for you and done for you. So it’s great that we can show our mums how much we appreciate them, isn’t it? Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it's often called Mothers' Day it has no connection with the American festival of that name. Traditionally, it was a day when children, mainly daughters, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother and family. Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday because the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed that day. Most Sundays in the year churchgoers in England worship at their nearest parish or 'daughter church'.Centuries ago it was considered important for people to return to their home or 'mother' church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their 'mother' church - the main church or cathedral of the area. Inevitably the return to the 'mother' church became an occasion for family reunions when children who were working away returned home. (It was quite common in those days for children to leave home for work once they were ten years old.) And most historians think that it was the return to the 'Mother' church which led to the tradition of children, particularly those working as domestic servants, or as apprentices, being given the day off to visit their mother and family. As they walked along the country lanes, children would pick wild flowers or violets to take to church or give to their mother as a small gift. The modern Mother's day began in the USA, at the initiative of Ann Reeves Jarvis in the early 20th century. This is not (directly) related to the many traditional celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have existed throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration (originally a commemoration of Mother Church, not motherhood as mentioned above). However, in some countries, Mother's Day is still synonymous with these older traditions. The U.S.-derived modern version of Mother's Day has been criticized for having become too commercialized. FounderJarvis herself regretted this commercialism and expressed views on how that was never her intention. Today Mother’s Day is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home-made cards to their mothers. It’s a day when pubs and restaurants are full to bursting and florists work 12 hour days. It’s also a bitter sweet day for those separated from their mothers or children by distance, dispute or death, so let’s remember these people and do something kind and thoughtful to bring a little joy. And finally, whilst it’s lovely to show your Mum how much you appreciate her on Mother’s Day. It’s just as lovely any other day of the year, and unexpected. So don’t make a fuss of her one day a year, call her often, take her out lots, tell her you love her and spend time with her. You only get one Mum.

Shopping & cake - the perfect combination! The Horam Emporium with Tpodz Cafe is the brainchild of Loz & Steve Wesson. They recently retired from running their famous Wesson's Cafe at the site and were looking for something else to do with this great space that didn't involve them doing much work! They hit upon the idea of an emporium for individual traders to come and rent stalls - much like The Needlemakers in Lewes or Snoopers Paradise in Brighton. An eclectic mix of new & vintage collectibles, art, clothing, ceramics, home ware, gardenaila, jewellery and unique gifts. It's a real cornucopia of interesting stuff. The Diary can report that a good few hours browsing, buying and then having a delicious lunch in Tpodz is the ideal thing to do with friends! A catch up and a birthday gift challenge solved - all in one lunchtime. Tpodz is run by local Horam lady Pip Dunnell. Pip moved to Vines Cross aged 10. She trained at catering college in Eastbourne before heading out to Oman to run a night club in her early twenties. After this she worked in Scotland in the hotel trade, returning to Horam in the 1980’s. Over the years she has had a variety of roles from ad sales to the motor trade. More recently she was looking for a career change and began looking into running a tea room (with the best coffee available!). She had spent some time looking for the right site. She was just about to sign a lease for a site elsewhere when Steve Wesson suggested she look closer to home. She literally popped out for a pizza and came home with a tea room! She runs the tea room with a great team including her best friend Susie. Tpodz is a lovely, light tea room with the most amazing cakes, delicious breakfasts & lunches and a warm friendly welcome. Pip uses local suppliers where possible - meat is from the village butchers Davies & Sons, eggs from Riverside Farm in Vines Cross. She is also looking into a reduction of plastic & packaging waste, with biodegradable and refillable options. Time spent at Tpodz is a welcome treat after a browse in The Horam Emporium. Both the tea room and the emporium are a marvellous addition to the village, we are so lucky to have such great local stores. If you haven't yet come in, do plan to visit soon! For more information on The Horam Emporium or to have a stall please contact Loz Wesson on (01435) 813999. Find them on Facebook or email them at wessonscafe@yahoo.co.uk For more information on Tpodz or to book an event contact Pip Dunnell on (01435) 810310 or at tpodztearoom@gmail.com

We need YOU!

You may recall me on my soap box about litter in our village. Our district council are unable to afford to have regular litter picking done, so have given the responsibility to the parish council, who with their limited funds pay for litter collection a few hours every week. However, this only covers the centre of Horam, the recreation ground, around the Village Hall and up to the petrol station on Little London road. Particular areas of concern are Horebeech Lane, Laundry Lane and the road from Horam to Maynards Green. Residents in Heathfield have been proactive and set up Brighter Heathfield, where volunteers are supplied equipment by Wealden District Council to keep the streets clean. I’ve been asking if anyone in Horam would be interested in joining Brighter Heathfield and co-ordinating litter picking in the areas not being covered by the parish council’s man? So far I have had three volunteers, this is the last call to readers to see if we can swell our ranks of rubbish mercenaries! Wealden District Council have kindly agreed to supply us with high-vis vests, bags, gloves and litter picker tools as part of their spring clean campaign. So all you will need is a ability to donate a couple of hours per month, some good walking footwear and a love of the great outdoors. If you are interested in getting involved please email us at hvcvillagediary@gmail.com and we can connect you with Brighter Heathfield to progress this. Lucy Atabey, Editor.

Maynards Green Forest School Y6

This term, Foxes class has been learning about the incredible story of Ernest Shackleton and his attempt to cross Antarctica in his ship the Endurance. The children have been thinking about what life might have been like for Shackleton and his crew. As part of their Forest School Learning they experienced what it must have been like for the crew to perform simple tasks, like tying knots, in the extreme cold of the Antarctic!. Despite the cold Forest School afternoons, the children showed great resilience and completed their tasks.

The Diary of a Villager

Looking forward to seeing our bees again Perhaps by the time you read this, we will know that our honey bees survived the winter. But as I write, we don’t know how they’re coping. No beekeeper knows whether their bees are surviving at this time of year, because it’s too cold to open up the hive and take a look. Honey bees don’t hibernate. They remain active inside the hive and only leave briefly if we have an unusually warm day. The girls (for there are no male drones in there at the moment, only female bees and their queen) have been huddling closely together in a ball, keeping their queen warm. As the outside temperature goes up and down, so the cluster size will get larger or smaller to adjust. It’s too cold to go and forage, and there are no reliable sources of pollen and nectar outside for them to eat anyway. So our bees will have been eating their honey. Bees make honey all summer long so they have supplies for the winter. To access their honey stores, the cluster will move around the hive as a group when the temperature rises. If it gets warm enough, some might break away from the main cluster to access a new area of honey, re-joining the other bees when it gets cold again. They may even be raising young bees. But prolonged cold winters are fraught with risk if you’re a honey bee. If bees break away from the main group and then it gets cold before they re-join them again, they will most likely die. If the cold spells go on too long and the bees can’t get out and have a cleansing flight, disease can form inside the hive which can wipe out the colony. If the hive stays damp for long periods, this is more likely to kill the bees more than the cold will. We left much more honey than we took from our hives last year. So, in theory, the bees have plenty of stores and shouldn’t run out. But if winter drags on and they can’t get out, the honey will run out. And if the bees simply can’t move the cluster to another part of the hive where honey is stored because it’s too cold for too long, the bees can starve to death even though there’s plenty of food inches away. So there’s a lot for us to think about, but not much we can do but wait. And hope, with our fingers tightly crossed, that our bees have survived the winter. Bev Toogood AlmostOffGrid.co.uk/blog

TUESDAYS TOGETHER

Tuesdays Together is a social group held at Union Church hall in the centre of Heathfield. We meet fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons from 1.45pm until approximately 3.30pm. All ages are welcome to come along for a cuppa, cake, chat and most importantly, company. We enjoy playing a variety of table top games including cards, dominoes, beetle and word games amongst others, played lightheartedly and with lots of laughter. For those who prefer quieter pursuits there is always a jigsaw puzzle on the go where you can enjoy spending time with like-minded puzzle solvers. The afternoon comes to a close with an informal fun quiz and sometimes an impromptu singalong. Why not join us one Tuesday for as little or as long as suits you? A warm friendly welcome is always waiting. We meet next on Tuesday 12th March. Looking forward to seeing you then. Vacancy for a Co-Opted Committee Member – Horam Village Hall Management Committee This past year has been another busy one for the Village Hall committee, with fundraising for the continuing improvement works throughout the hall including lighting, toilets, flooring, blinds and redecoration. With funds received from Beech Homes’ Merrydown development work has started on the provision of the new play equipment, skatepark and outdoor gym equipment. We still have projects to pursue and continue to fundraise for these. This work includes re-sanding the hall floor, purchase of new staging, upgrade of heating system and relaying the car park. As a Committee we hope we have developed, and continue to do so, a Village Hall that the village can be proud of and willing to use; one that is great value for money and a venue suitable for any number of uses and occasions. The committee meet every other month, our AGM takes place in November where all members re-stand for election. If you would like to find out more about what being a committee member entails please contact the secretary, Leigh Ellen Skeggs on 01435 810022 or horamvillagehall@gmail.com

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – March 2019 PLAY AREA, HORAM RECREATION GROUND Following delays due to the inclement weather, work on the play area is progressing and is hoped to be completed by the end of the month. A date for the commencement of work on the new skatepark has yet to be finalised. Any enquiries to be made to The Clerk at Horam Parish Council, e-mail: clerk@horam.com or telephone 07900 576236. Funding for this project has been provided by Section 106 monies from the Beech Homes/Merrydown development. ROSEMEAD, HOREBEECH LANE – BRIDGE, PROPOSED ROUNDABOUT AND STREET LIGHTING Horam Parish Council are deeply concerned about the proposed roundabout to feed the new development of 123 houses at Rosemead, Horebeech Lane. This will also bring additional lighting to the countryside which HPC has been told is required to reduce the speed limit in this location. HPC have also raised their concerns about the lack of a metal footway alongside the bridge. The parapets are being raised and the deck halved to make space for walkers leaving a priority road which will make it very dangerous for people crossing the bridge. Representations have been made to ESCC and to the developers Bovis Homes. Both were invited to attend a meeting to discuss these concerns. Unfortunately Bovis declined the invitation saying that they cannot see that there is anything further to add. However, the Chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor Cousins has been invited to attend a meeting with East Sussex County Councillor Bentley and officers from the Road Safety Team at County Hall, Lewes to present HPC’s concerns. DISTRICT AND PARISH COUNCIL ELECTIONS - 2nd MAY 2019 These elections are due to be held on Thursday, 2nd May 2019 with vacancies for parish councillors for the parish of Horam. If you are interested in standing as a candidate for the Parish Council further information can be sought from the Clerk of the Parish Council, their website or Wealden District Council’s website. Nomination papers can be obtained nearer the time direct from the Clerk or Electoral Services at Wealden District Council in Hailsham. Once completed the nomination paper must be returned to WDC offices at Hailsham. Each candidate requires a proposer and seconder from the Ward and the candidate needs to qualify under one or more of the set criteria. Members of the public are welcome to attend full Council meetings. If you are interested in joining the Parish Council and standing as a candidate then come along to the next monthly meeting which will be held at 7.30 p.m. in the Horam Centre on Wednesday, 13th March 2019 to view how the Parish Council works. HORAM PARISH COUNCIL’S ANNUAL PARISH MEETING Please note that the Annual Parish Meeting has been postponed until late May. At the time of writing this report the date has yet to be finalised. Full details will follow in next months’ edition. Horam Parish Council Clerk contact details: Telephone 01435 812151 (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings – 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.) Mobile: 07900 576236 or e-mail at clerk@horam.com or call into The Horam Centre (Tuesday, Thursday or Friday mornings).

New causes are chosen every 12 months, and applications for the next round open in March 2019. For more information go to www.coop.co.uk and search local community funding.

SUCCESS FOR LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP Following on from their recent success in getting local pollution monitors set up in the village (a big thank you to Cornelie & Peter from the group for getting the sensor up and running), local group TN21 Environment Aware met with charity The Friends of the Earth last month. They requested support from Friends of The Earth for the work they are doing locally. The charity advised that a specialist has been nominated to help local groups that are working in this important area. National Clean Air Day is on the 20th June and the group are aiming to be up and running for that day. A big thank you from the community and the Diary to the group for the work they are doing. The more development we have in the village, the more pollution becomes an issue. For more information or to get involved call (01435) 812253.

THE JOYS OF GROWING We are now in our twelfth year of trading and for those of you that have visited our nursery, River Mead Nursery in Vines Cross, you have probably heard either myself or Phil talk about how we gave up perfectly good jobs in order to pursue our dream (actually my dream but driven by Phil). Not many people are lucky enough to be able to say they are living their dream, or even be able to try to. So every time I open the gate with our 2 lurchers, Billy and Betsy, and walk back up the drive (especially on a sunny day), I consider myself very privileged. It has been and still is very hard work and not something lightly taken on, there are ups and there are downs. There are times, when you want to give up, for example, when a party of squirrels had squeezed into the greenhouse overnight and had managed to decimate our planted bulbs – every single crocus bulb in a pot – eaten, - every single snakes head fritillaria, eaten – every single miniature tulip, eaten – every pot of hybrid tulips turned over and the bulbs tipped out of the pots! A lot of clearing up to do and a lot of heartache. However, for every heartache there is always something heart-warming to make up for it. The first shock of yellow from the winter jasmine or forsythia, the first spring bulbs to show colour, autumn foliage and there are always new plant varieties to discover. By Julie Manktelow

SPRING STUNNERS! Whilst you enjoy the first flashes of colour from bulbs previously sown, now is the time to start thinking about how you want your garden to look this summer. Award winning pub group re-open The Heathfield Tavern Locals have welcomed the news that The Heathfield Tavern has been taken over by Ridley Inns, who run two other pubs in East Sussex. Matt Ridley says that The Heathfield Tavern will have elements of both The Highlands Inn in Uckfield and The Cock Inn in Ringmer with an emphasis on great food and a family friendly dining experience. They are looking to offer a menu with top quality ingredients, sourced locally where possible, featuring pub favourites like burgers, fish and chips, steak but also more high end dishes with daily specials for those looking for something a little bit different. Matt’s parents Ian & Val got into running pubs by chance when they learnt their regular pub The Cock Inn, was going up for sale. Looking for something to do in retirement they jumped at the chance to own and run their favourite haunt, and as Matt had worked most his teenage years there it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Matt was involved from day one and Nick dropped his corporate commuter life in London a few years later to join the family business. Both Matt & his brother Nick play an active role in managing the pubs, with the help of their sister Caroline and Nick’s wife Melanie. The building dates from the early nineteenth century and it is is the only pub in town. This is generally believed to be because in the nineteenth century the Plymouth Brethren (a conservative, low church, non-conformist, evangelical Christian movement originated in Dublin in the 1820’s) dominated Heathfield and the Heathfield Tavern was only permitted as it was built next door to a police house! We are lucky to have so many great country pubs around Heathfield & Horam, but generally all require a car journey. The Ridley’s plan to create some ambient outdoor space for visitors to the pub in Summer and improve the car parking provision, along with the introduction of a Sunday carvery. So if it’s a drink with the girls, a family lunch, a business meeting with refreshments, a special event or a pit stop for a pint – you will be guaranteed a warm welcome. Both the Cock Inn and The Highlands Inn have great reputations, so we are super excited to see what’s on offer at The Heathfield Tavern. Don’t forget to book early for a table for Mothers Day on 31st March! Call on 01435 864847 for bookings. For more information visit http://ridleyinns.co.uk/ Or visit their Facebook page. 54

March Gardening Diary

" As many mists as ye have in March, so many frosts in May "

March is one of the busier months of the year in the garden and it is a good thing to be kept busy during the long gloom of Lent. This year we have the added incentive of B-Day on the 29th, if, as we have been promised, all shops will be empty of all produce and all merchandise on the morning of the 30th, we may plan with more energy and diligence than usual to make the vegetable patch pay and to thwart the speculators and importers who are certain to use the day as an excuse to hike prices. The planting of deciduous trees, shrubs, fruits and roses should be finished as soon as possible to give them a chance to get a grip of the soil before drought may punish them. In a warm sheltered border we may be planting evergreens such as Laurels, conifers, hollies, azaleas and rhododendrons. Most herbaceous perennials can also be planted now. Rose pruning should be carried on this month, subject to the weather. Though many gardeners prune earlier, during winter, later pruning allows us to cut back to the best buds and to avoid hard frosts on new shoots. We should try to resist until the vernal equinox, (The 20th) and a week or so later if a Blackthorn Winter has really set in. Hybrid tea roses may be pruned back to five or so buds with all sickly and dead wood cut away. Climbing roses should have their side branches cut back to two buds. It is worth feeding the roses with a dedicated rose fertiliser now as the leaves are making their first appearance and spraying with a fungicide from now until June should keep the leaves looking clean all season. Unlike most bulbous rooted plants, snowdrops will benefit from being lifted and divided every few years as the clumps can become very crowded, leading to a mass of blind shoots. In the vegetable garden we should be aiming first at the creation of the all important fine tilth. As always, the weather is master. The soil should be visibly drying; better to wait until the end of the month or beyond before sowing a seed if there is any hint of stickiness. The reader will have dug over the plot thoroughly last autumn, digging in barrowfuls of horse droppings, compost, shoddy and celebrity magazines. The floods and gales of winter will have weathered the diggings down to an uneven crumbly surface. Patient raking eventually renders our seed bed smooth and fine, air pockets being trodden out as we go. We might allow ourselves five minutes leaning on the rake indulging in a short pipe and a gloat over our seed bed, well prepared and superior to next door's. Only now may we sow. The first sowings may be of peas, leeks, parsnips (always use new seed), broad beans, parsley, spinach and radishes, onion and shallot sets may be planted nearer the end of the month, a trowel is better than a dibber for these as any compaction encourages them to wriggle free of the ground. Garlic may still be planted but no time must be lost. New beds of Thyme, Tarragon, Mint and other herbs may be planted out towards middle of Lent. Early potatoes to go in from the Ides of March, planted about six inches down, these early plantings will run some risk from frost but it is good to see the neat rows of tight foliage as soon as possible and any frost-blackened shoots will soon be replaced. We are advised to carry around a bale of straw at all times during March and early April to spread over tender shoots in the case of a late frost. For those who commune with the moon and garden by her phases and the biodynamic system of lunar planting, root crops to be planted or sown during the waning gibbous, from the 21st to the 28th. The week commencing 29th March, B-Day, is the designated Barren phase on the lunar calendar....... Rows for runner beans may be prepared now, this should involve digging in barrowfuls of compost or horsey stuff a foot and a half down and allowed to settle down over the next six to eight weeks before sowing. Jerusalem artichokes may be planted near the end of the month, notorious breakwinds though they are, they are also very useful windbreaks on exposed sites and there is no better plant for hiding an unsightly fence or shed. Tired roots of rhubarb may be divided and replanted now and should regain their zest in a couple of years. We may hope that the long list of routine maintenance about the garden has been completed by Ash Wednesday as the new season will leave no time for pulling up arrears.

Local people: Donald Cockell -Horam’s heavyweight contender Diamond's Farm, Horam. A quiet valley of the Waldron Ghyll, populated by quietly staring ruminants. A spot where sheep may safely graze. How very different it looked and sounded sixty five years ago when the quiet pastures were given over to four hundred head of poultry, a hundred Wessex Saddle-back swine, a dozen Freisans, Short-Horn heifers, arable crops and the sound of loud clanging issuing from workshops as prefabricated Dutch barns were put together for loading onto waiting Leyland Chieftain lorries. The farm had been bought by Mr Donald Cockell, a young blacksmith from Battersea. It is a stirring, sometimes sad, but still inspiring story of a London boy, who grew fast and large and ended up a heavyweight boxer with a stab at the heavyweight championship of the world. Don was apprenticed as a blacksmith in Battersea in the early 1940s, a large physique and fondness for a sporting brawl led him to regular bouts at fairgrounds and parks in London. Seeing there might be a future in boxing, he turned professional in 1946, taking home £7 from his first bout. Having won more bouts and got on in trade, he married his childhood sweetheart, Irene. Soon they were casting about for a farm in the country to indulge an ambition to farm and to set up their own business. They alighted on Diamond's Farm on Vines Cross Rd. Diamond Farm Construction company was set up and he quickly set about building a workshop for fabricating iron farm buildings and garages. Whilst all this was in train, the farming side was built up with the above mentioned swine and cows and poultry together with a Persian cat named Haroun AlRashid (inevitably Rasher) a chatter of budgerigas, goldfish, a horse (Jack of Diamonds) bought for Irene, and an arthritic retriever, formerly much lauded as a 'fine rabbiter'. But even as all this activity was happening, he thought he would work his way up the boxing rankings. As one does. At first all went spectacularly well as he won the cruiser weight and light heavyweight British and Empire titles. Disaster then struck as he was wasted by rheumatic fever, this merged into a glandular disease which led to a great increase in weight, much of it in fat. Having been soundly beaten in the ring it looked like all was over for the 'Battersea Blacksmith' but through sheer hard work he came back, but unable to maintain his weight he was compelled to move up to the heavyweight division. Not his natural place. On his march up the rankings he fought in front of Prince Philip, the fight was against the (As the newspapers dubbed him) 'Blacker-than-a-chimney-sweep' negro Jimmy Slade. Those who vilify the Prince as a racist buffoon should have witnessed how Prince Philip, seeing Slade sidelined and alone before the fight, pushed his way, unprompted, through the crowds to pump him by the glove and crack a joke (oh how we would love to know what was said). Becoming British champion he was presented in May 1955 with the opportunity of a lifetime- a shot at the world championship in San Francisco against the title holder Rocky Marciano. The Americans were jealous of their boxing and considered the title to be their preserve. Much gamesmanship was employed, including the use of a much smaller ring, which would suit their own close fighting brawler and work against Don's footwork, The 6oz gloves usually used were exchanged for the holder's preferred 8oz gloves. But Cockell had a more worrying handicap; as a result of his weight-enforced move up to heavyweight he found himself too short and thus lacking the reach to fight effectively at this level. Marciano was considered such a terrifying and ruthless brawler that most pundits gave Cockell three rounds at most. In the event, despite the American landing low blows, head butting, using elbows and striking his opponent when down, Cockell went nine rounds before the third man stopped the fight. The challenger had been knocked down numerous times but never looked for a moment like giving in, it's painful to watch the old footage of the fight for the sheer number of crunching blows landed on the bloodied and insensate challenger, damage that would never be allowed nowadays. Indeed Marciano said after the fight that he had never fought a braver man nor hit anybody so hard and so many times. Cockell was never the same after the fight, being defeated in two further bouts before having his titles taken away. So, back to Horam and the farm and to bash out more Dutch barns. Though the Cockells were deeply involved with country life; we see Don supporting the Vines Cross Tug-of-war team and Irene opening the Lewes cage bird society meeting in 1955 (the show disappointed that year through too many of the budgerigar class being in moult) there was evidently tension beneath the surface. It seems Irene

64

d p h w w d n D w t b H Th o c L i O R h H L i t

didn't take to the locals or to country life as easily as her husband, indeed she is quoted in the newspapers as complaining of the lack of interest shown by the locals in her boxing champion husband, but we may also surmise the husband becoming short tempered with the strain of taking on too much. This all culminated in October 1956 with Irene hitching the caravan to her Hillman Minx and speeding away down Vines Cross Road. She was eventually tracked down to a forest in northern France where she had taken refuge with able seaman 'Taffy' Clarke. Divorce proceedings were issued but a reconciliation was agreed and Irene was back for Christmas. That winter was a hard one, the country had ground to a halt under blizzards and snow drifts and with the farm under a thick blanket of snow, it would be nice to imagine the scene in the farm house, with the children, Peter and Patsy, the dog, Haroun Al-Raschid the cat and the budgerigars all ensconsced by the fire and the sherry flowing freely. Though Don had ambitions to expand in Horam, with attempts to buy Horam Manor, which was then in the process of being requisitioned from the owner on the grounds of gross mismanagement and neglect of the farm, the purchase never happened and Diamond's Farm was sold. Don moved to Hastings to become the landlord of the Jenny Lind public house but eventually drifted back to London where he was employed in a machine shop. He died aged 55 in 1983. Of Don's time at the farm there still remains some walling and his workshop, a fine construction in excellent repair. Rumour had it that he built a sauna/steam room somewhere on the farm to help get the weight down for fights, we hope that one day a subterranean chamber will be discovered, complete with hanging title belts and the remains of Haroun Al-Rashid the Persian cat. Last words may be left to his American adversaries. As the prominent boxing pundit of the New York Journal put it: '"He's a game one...and those of us who watched him will not forget him. For Don Cockell's is the sort of courage that thrills you. He's no champion of the world, but he is a man". Fossor apud Horamum.

Close to Hand is an online community that connects you with local people who can lend a helping hand. We make it easy to arrange practical help and companionship at the same time as enabling local people to find flexible work with a purpose. In our experience, it's smiles all round. We realise that there are many reasons people look for help at home, at different times throughout their lives. Most of us have either been in a situation where we've needed a helping hand or, at the least, we can picture a time when we'd appreciate another person around to offer assistance. Close to Hand is different to an agency; in fact, it's not an agency at all, but an online platform connecting local home helpers with anyone looking for an extra pair of hands on an ad hoc or regular basis. Close to Hand Home Helpers are self-employed and set their own hourly rate, typically between £8-£15 per hour, meaning it's an affordable and flexible option. We bring people together by building a community based on trust and support. All members of our community connect directly with each other via our secure messaging service. Register online, browse local Home Helper profiles and make an instant connection. www.closetohand.co.uk
