ers, d a e R r a De Well May was an eventful month! The quintessential annual Heffle Cuckoo Fair with it’s traditional country themes took place and was well attended; the local elections were watched with interest, with the independent & green candidates gaining a respectable number of votes but the Conservatives coming out top; Horam Manor campsite changed hands with the Harmer family returning to the normal life of living in a house without being surrounded by caravans, motorhomes & tents; a rent a bike scheme was rolled out on the Cuckoo Trail and Horam Manor‘s May Fair was lots of fun and raised a considerable sum for Parkinson’s UK. Hidden Spring Vineyard won an award for their wine and Maynards Green School were classed as OUTSTANDING by OFSTED! A quick flick through the pages of the Diary will show you a number of local community groups for those seeking friendship, chat and other activities. Please make the most of these groups, they are usually run by volunteers and are not for profit and there are plenty to try to see what suits you best. This month sees the welcome return to the Diary of Wheelgates Canine Behaviour & Training column. With the very experienced Alison Burgess sharing tips on how to train your dog. Finally, please help the Village Hall get the funding they need, see P70 for full details.

Do you have a training or behaviour problem with your dog? Alison of Wheelgates Canine Behaviour & Training is here to answer any questions you may have regarding your dog’s behaviour. Question: “Our dog persistently barks whenever the car slows down. She travels in a largish cage behind the front seats and whimpers and squeaks for the first few hundred yards but then settles and lays down quietly until: a) She recognises we are near somewhere she has walked in the past; b) I slow the car down for any reason - junctions, roundabouts, and so on - then the squeaking and whining continues, until I get back on the move again. I tried all sorts of things, but I have failed to correct it.” Alison’s answer: This is a very distracting behaviour and important to resolve. If this dog’s experience of car travel is that the journey always ends in a free run in the park, the dog is likely to be barking from excitement. Lots of short journeys to parks often result in dogs developing this excitable behaviour. The car slowing down is a predictor that it is about to stop, and the fun in the park will begin. They don’t allow for the fact the car may be slowing down for a junction! Whining is the canine equivalent of “Are we nearly there yet?” Rather than trying to correct the dog, which rarely works, we can change what is in his mind. Take the dog out for more rides in the car, which do not end in a walk. Every time you need to use the car, and it is safe to do so, take the dog with you. Of course, you cannot leave your dog in the car, but there may be many occasions when it can accompany you for the journey, and back again without ever getting out. The dog should very quickly learn it often travels in the car and home again with none of the previous excitement of a walk. In time the anticipation ceases. Lots of long and boring journeys for your dog should do the trick! I do hope this helps and your travelling become more peaceful! Email dogtraining@wheelgates.co.uk and your question may be chosen to be answered in our next issue. Your name will not be published.

PLANNING UPDATE

The build continues and we are waiting for the archaeologists to come back on site to finish their investigations – see more in statement from developer below. According to WDC Planning, the drainage systems have yet to be agreed for the site and that it is being suggested that the attenuation ponds are replaced with water tanks. Watch this space. Unfortunately, Bovis do not have a great reputation with house buyers. 85% of customers who left a review on Trust Pilot rated them as ‘bad’. It would be good advice to suggest that buyers, should always check the tenure of the lease, the service charges required for maintenance of the estate and get an independent surveyor’s report to check the quality of the build before buying.

Statement from Bovis 17/05/19: ‘This week marks an exciting milestone in the development of our new Rosemead Place location in Horam, as the first homes go on sale off-plan from our nearby location at Burfield Grange, Halisham (BN27 1PB). If you’d like to hear more about the range of three, four and five bedroom family homes on offer at Rosemead Place, our team at Hailsham would be happy to talk you through the plans. On site, work is progressing well, with the first three show homes on schedule to open during the summer. Temporary access to the site is now open so deliveries to site will be made easier and we’d like to extend our thanks to nearby residents, who have been extremely understanding during this period. Work to the main entrance has begun and we are progressing well with our other units. Archaeology is still on-going, and we are hoping for an update from our contractors once this is complete so we can share our findings with the local community’.

Crematoriam

Open days for local businesses were held in May. Funerals have already taken place, whilst the team continue to finish off the landscaping at the site and other works. There will be an open day for the general public on 15th June – please see What’s On page and their advert on P55 for more details.

Wealden Local Plan

The Planning Inspector has finished her first review of the Local Plan. The public meetings begin from Tuesday 28th May to Thursday 30th May after the Diary goes to print, so an update will appear in our July issue. For more information please contact the Programme Officer: email lynette.benton@ wealden.gov.uk; by post FAO Local Plan Programme Officer, Wealden District Council, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, BN27 2AX or telephone on 07977 415678.

Fathers Day Sunday 16th June So how are you going to treat your Dad this Father’s Day? Perhaps we can help with some suggestions to keep him sweet and keep it local? Maybe you can treat him to lunch at The Wheel in Burwash or the The Heathfield Tavern? If he is into his wine, why not pop down to The Hidden Spring Vineyard and pick up some of their award winning wine, or book in for dinner? Or take him for a day fishing at Horam Manor and spoil him with the excellent carvery at Lakeside? Is he into his trains? Take him for tea & cake in Tpodz and let him browse Tim’s Toys and enjoy the trains and model cars from yesteryear. Is he feeling a bit tense & stressed? You could book him a massage at Horam Natural Therapy Centre. Or maybe pop down to Davies & Son and grab him some dry aged steaks to make him a special meal at home. Spoilt for choice, aren’t we?! We asked you to nominate your Dad to appear in the Diary this month with a dedication. Julieann Evans got in touch and shared this great picture with us: “This is my Dad. He passed away in 2006 and I still miss him every day. He was always the one I turned to for support. But I miss most that he hasn’t seen my boys grow into fine young men. He would be so proud of them.

Maynards Green Community Primary School is Outstanding! Happy and motivated children, committed staff, and above-average attainment across all subject areas are just some of the highlights listed in Maynards Green’s recent OFSTED report. Maynards Green Community Primary School has been deemed ‘outstanding’ by a recent two-day Ofsted inspection. Highlighting pupils’ strong progress and above-average achievement in all areas of the curriculum, the inspectors also noted that the children were very happy and motivated, with parents appreciating the care and support provided by the school staff. ‘We are delighted with this outcome and feel that it is a true reflection of the hard work and determination of the whole staff team,” says Mrs. Poole, headteacher of Maynards Green. “We are particularly pleased with the comments in relation to our ‘exceptional curriculum’, as much work has gone into planning and delivering a curriculum for the children which is inspiring and offers exciting and memorable learning activities. Children have always been at the heart of our work and the report very much reflects our child-centred approach’. The school is situated in a peaceful, rural setting adjacent to the beautiful Cuckoo Trail in the heart of East Sussex. There are currently 217 children on roll, with a waiting list for all years. The two-day Ofsted inspection, which happened just before the Easter break, highlighted many outstanding features, including the exceptional curriculum, the progress and achievement of the pupils in all subject areas and the nurturing and inclusive environment. The early years provision was commended for being highly engaging and stimulating, and their exemplary practice is used as an example to other schools in the area. Parents and pupils alike agree that Maynards Green deserves this ‘outstanding’ OFSTED rating. One parent has said, “This a magnificent achievement and I am very proud to belong to such an excellent school.” Children say, “We love Maynards Green School. The Inspectors asked us about our school, and we told them how much we love coming to school every day. We told them that it is fun, but we learn a lot too.” The chair of Governors, Phil Williams, is quick to praise the Head and her dedicated team, “The Governors stand in absolute awe of and admiration for the entire team of staff at Maynards Green School – from Headteacher, leadership team, teachers and classroom assistants to all the support staff – what a phenomenal group of dedicated, caring people, whose efforts to inspire children to be educated, bright, joyful and rounded human-beings-in-the-making have been recognised so clearly in Ofsted’s findings.” He continues, “The language of praise in the report is nothing short of breath-taking, and thoroughly deserved; the Governors know that they are very privileged to be associated with Maynards Green School, its great staff and amazing children. Congratulations to all on this much-deserved outcome!” Mrs. Poole says the school plans to celebrate this success and have asked the pupils for their ideas on how to do this. “‘Children are currently talking about how we might celebrate this fantastic achievement and, so far, suggestions include a whole school sleepover, a mufti day with fun activities and a whole-school picnic lunch and a wholeschool visit to somewhere interesting and exciting!”

HOBBIES & LESISURE THE HEFFLE GOLF SOCIETY Its likely, if you're under 45 that you are unaware that one of the most active Golf Societies in Sussex was formed 26 years ago in Heathfield. The HEFFLE GOLF SOCIETY has organised over 450 UK and European events since 1994 and the success we have had in this area is the reason we are trying to increase local interest again today . We play midweek at least once a month throughout the year and to date have played over 140 different courses. We are currently enjoying 4 rounds of golf in Southern Spain and in late June/ early July have a 3 game trip to the Dorset area. Between these events we will be playing on Tuesday June 18th at the Weald of Kent and then on Wednesday 17th July at a venue to be decided. We play courses with a little variation and surprise added during each year so keep an eye on our website www.hefflegolf.com for details. It's open to all and gives information on all of our events, future, current and past. There is NO JOINING FEE and NO ANNUAL SUBS. All we ask is for your participation and adherence to the levels of etiquette expected by golf courses. Male & female players of all abilities are welcome. What you pay is the price we are charged at each course for 18 holes and breakfast plus a small sum of about ÂŁ4 to cover our prize fund, our website and admin cost. Of course the whole purpose of this communication is to try to attract some new members so why not give us a try. Competitive, regular and varied golf without joining and being committed to one club was the original aim of the society, that's still the aim today. Ring us on 07777 682038 or email jeff.brain@btinternet.com if you'd like to find out more.

The Perils of Poo

A lot of litter consists of the small plastic bags that dog walkers use to pick up behind their dogs. Either along public footpaths, or festooning trees - blowing in the wind! Whilst we applaud the owners for collecting their dog’s poo, this is only step 1 of the process. Step 2 is to find a dog poo bin and deposit your bag or take it home with you. Unfortunately, step 2 is where some dog owners falter, leaving the bags to ruin our beautiful countryside. There is however a more serious outcome. The bags left on footpaths on farmland often get eaten by sheep, cows, horses & other grazing animals, which can be fatal. In addition to this parasites found in the faeces can cause death and miscarriage for pregnant cows & ewes. Ozymandius, the ram at Diamonds Farm, has contacted the Editors on behalf of his ewes. He states that he and his ladies are not happy about dog poo bags being left in their grazing fields, crossed by the Right of Way; left hanging on trees or on the stiles. He says that this is not nice and would walkers please not do it. He respectfully requests that you take dog poo home with you (bag it & bin it) or leave it to biodegrade naturally somewhere appropriate away from the sheep. It can be a source of contamination & disease in sheep. It is well known that sheep carcasses have been condemned at abattoirs because of contamination from parasites related to faeces from unwormed dogs. Thank you very much for your understanding. The Editors.

Setting up a Water Station for Bees.

We visited our hives last week. It wasn’t particularly warm weather, yet there were lots of bees drinking from the tray of water we set up for them last year. Like other animals, bees need water to drink. But honey bees also have other uses for water. They use it to cool the hive in warm weather, and to control the humidity. And nursing bees need water to produce the jelly with which they feed the larvae. A jar of old honey in the kitchen cupboard will become viscous and crystallise. The same can happen to honey in the hive. The bees use water to thin this honey, otherwise they can’t use it. And since they rarely store water in the hive, bees need a source all year round. You will often find bees around stagnant water, muddy holes and other (to us) undesirable wet areas. Scientists think that is partly because bees find water by smell rather than sight. Hence bees are more attracted to smelly water than sparkly clear water fresh from the tap. Once they find a water source, bees will return to it again and again. To create a water source for bees, find an old container. We repurpose old black seedling trays (the ones without holes of course!). Pour water over a variety of pebbles, twigs and leaves in the tray. Ensure there are plenty of stones peeping up above the surface of the water so the bees can stand safely on them. That way they can have a drink without falling into the water and drowning. Bev Toogood

Wealden Crematorium’s Local Florist Your local florist Ana O’Kill has over 25 years of experience in the business and knows that flowers are a simple and beautiful way to help people express their feelings and emotions, at a time of great sorrow, loss and confusion. Ana & her team at Cuckoo Flower Co understand that it is possibly the first time that you may have had to order flowers for a funeral. They can offer expert guidance about floral tributes, from a simple tied posy to a more elaborate coffin spray. They are constantly striving to reduce their waste and are happy to produce eco-friendly tributes ; simply tied bunches, tied with raffia or a woven willow or Birch frame, through which seasonal flowers are threaded. They liaise closely with undertakers in Heathfield and surrounding areas so that you can rest assured that they take great care of every aspect of your funeral flowers and ensure they are delivered in good time and in pristine condition.

Let us help you to select the perfect flowers for your loved one. We are passionate about using British produce & local suppliers and have the creativity to tailor your tribute to fully reflect their character.

Air pollution – should we be concerned?

A study titled ‘School Children and Air Pollution 2015’ by Researcher Professor Chris Griffiths, from Queen Mary’s Blizard Institute said air pollution in UK towns and cities is a major health problem. This study is the first to test the impact of targeted pollution control areas, on long term lung growth and health of children. Poor air quality is the largest risk to public health in the UK, as long term exposure can cause chronic conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory disease, as well as lung cancer, leading to reduced life expectancy. Separate analysis by Unicef UK suggests 1 in 3 children live in areas with highest levels of air pollution, which could lead to health conditions such as asthma. Evidence shows that particulate matter PM 2:5 exposure is the most lethal type of air pollution for human health and children are the most vulnerable to its effect. PM 2:5 exposure refers to tiny particles of air pollution, diameter less than the width of a human hair. Exposure during the initial stages of development can lead to stunted lung growth and affect brain development, and lead to long term health conditions. Worryingly, one third of our children could be filling their lungs with toxic air. Every year health effects from PM2:5 exposure cost the NHS and social care £40 million.Public Health England research shows even the smallest improvement in air quality could reap massive benefits for children and the UK tax payer. Schools need dedicated programmes that will help with air pollution. We all need clean air for a healthy life, so the quality of air we breathe matters hugely. A national campaign to raise awareness about the importance of clean air is held every year, Clean Air Day June 20th June. TN21 Environment Aware in Horam is providing air quality monitors in polluted areas and the school in time for clean air day. Submitted by: Ruth Buckingham from TN21 Environmental Awareness.

Local child Luis already suffering

Local boy Luis Walker is still waiting, 1 year on for Theresa May to make good on her promise to resolve the stand off between the NHS and Veretex for the drug Orikambi that could improve his health and increase his life expectancy. Luis’s mother Chris is asking for support for the following: Please will everyone with a spare few minutes help support his mum’s fight for drugs for Luis: Please use copy below to send an email with your name at the bottom to this address hsccom@parliament.uk Subject: Orkambi Inquiry. Dear Dr Wollaston, It has been more than two months since you wrote to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, following an inquiry into the situation which means cystic fibrosis patients remain untreated with modulator drugs manufactured by Vertex Pharmaceuticals. No time scales were put in your letter and the parties subsequently agreed to not provide a running commentary of negotiations. While the rationale behind this was accepted by most people at the time, now that talks have not reached a conclusion after a considerable time, it is essential that the Committee use it’s power to call for an update. The level of anxiety and pain felt in the community, is second only to the irreversible loss of health experienced by patients with this continued delay. HSC must demand to see what has been presented by both sides in negotiations since the March inquiry and provide an update to the CF community. We are relying on your independent intervention in this situation. Best regards,

June Gardening Diary "A dripping June brings all in tune" June is one of the more pleasing months of the gardener's year, the blooms of spring may have faded but in their place is a wealth of summer blossom. By the end of the month we may give in the urge to drive the mower over the old daffodil foliage, this two month stay of execution will have helped the bulbs to build up for next year. The season of the sucking and biting pests is in full swing so to allow for a good night's sleep, the diligent gardener must wage unceasing war on insect pests, not such an easy job now the EU has scotched our most effective treatments, though we may hope that Agent Orange and DDT don't make a come back if we leave the EU. If aphides and caterpillars are allowed to multiply unchecked they will wreak havoc in the flower garden and amongst the vegetable and fruit crops. Straightforward washing-up liquid and water in a spray bottle will work for aphids and the collecting of caterpillars may be profitably delegated to the underemployed youths and children we may uncover about the house. It is at this time of year that the benefits of deep and thorough winter digging begin to show; Drought has nothing like the same effect on thoroughly prepared ground as it has on shallow soil hastily dug to the depth of a mere few inches. Planting out of any tender subjects remaining is a job for the first week of the month. Summer bedding will at last be ready, room for growth should be allowed when planting, water until established. Our minds may now be turning towards displays for next spring. Wallflowers, fox gloves, sweet william, forget-me-nots and canterbury bells may be sown now in finely prepared beds to give them as long as possible to grow before planting out in autumn. Staking and tying and the feeding of plants that are actually in bud and bloom are other tasks which command our attention; A heavy June downpour will quickly lay any tall plants face down and spread-eagled across the lawn, always a chastening sight. Be alert to suckers growing from the bases of roses, they usually have more thorn and leaf than an ordinary stem and should be removed on sight. We may not be afeard to thin out crowded stems of such plants as Rudbeckia, Helianthus, Michaelmas Daisies, Phloxes and Solidagos. A few strong stems will make a far better display than overcrowded clumps. No faded flower heads should be allowed to remain on Rhododendrons and Azaeleas, snapping them off above the foliage will free the new growth and the buds will thus be freed from restraint and begin at once to grow vigorously. Yellowing leaves on the aforesaid plants may indicate a liming of the soil which should be corrected with an acidifier. Any black bristly buds that won't open must be removed and burnt. Old Paeony flowers should also be removed, though one may wish to keep a few seed pods on the old types which make useful material for dried-flower displays at Christmas. In the vegetable garden we may continue to remove all unwanted runners in the straberry bed. Seeds of French and runner beans may still be sown, that deep trench of organic matter the reader dug in some months ago will pay back with a heavy crop. Lettuce, radishes and

62

June Gardening Diary spinach can still be sown for succession. Maincrop Turnips and Swedes around the middle of the month. Plant Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and Savoys as the ground becomes available. Continue with the thinning of previously sown crops; overcrowding in the nursery bed will produce rangy and straggling specimens which will never regain their figures. Earth-up Potatoes little and often as growth proceeds. We should cease cutting Asparagus around the middle of the month and give the bed some nourishment to encourage strong top growth of the stems still remaining. That hoe should be stirring the soil from time to time to break up any panned surfaces and keep the soil from drying out and baking hard. No Hoers' Elbow please. During the summer months plants in pots should be watered every day regardless of the weather and given a liquid feed once a week. If we have kept up to speed with jobs through winter and spring we should soon have a thoroughly effulgent garden, one fit to make our neighbours green with envy, calling for just some minor daily pottering, so allowing us the time to enjoy long pipes in the sunshine listening to the summer noises of bees buzzing at safe distance and the merry sounds on the wireless set of Australian wickets a-tumbling.

Mykonos – something for everyone! In this issue, Bianca and Tracy from The ‘Little Venice’ in Mykonos Town. Travel Concept share their knowledge of Greece's most famous Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, Mykonos. With its Mediterranean climate, this sparkling paradise offers something for everyone. If you're looking for a vibrant and colourful atmosphere with an up-beat nightlife, or simply want to explore its charming towns – steeped in history and local traditions, then this destination is the perfect choice! In Chora, the local name for Mykonos town, you can stroll around narrow streets and admire the iconic white- Tracy and Bianca washed houses with their colourful frames, surrounded from the Travel Concept, on a recent by colourful bougainvillea. Visit the local church, Town fact-finding trip to Hall and the Castle situated above the harbour. A visit here would not be complete without a wander along Ma- Mykonos toyanni street, lined with chic, high-end stores, charming cafes and stylish restaurants. Mykonos boasts a lively waterfront with brightly coloured fishing boats and azure waters. There are many beautiful photo opportunities as well. The "Little Venice"18th century district is one of these. It's dominated by grand captains' mansions with colourful balconies and stylish windows. You will also see the quaint 16th-century windmills which overlook the town. There are plenty of great beaches to choose from too. Some offer a more peaceful, bohemian vibe, whilst others suit a more family-orientated experience, there is even a selection of beaches for jetsetters and party-goers. No stay on Mykonos would be complete without a visit to the tiny archaeological island of Delos, the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. The island boasts the ruins of a market place, an amphitheatre, and includes the iconic Terrace of Lions statues, which date back to 7th century BC. Having revisited the island recently, we can advise on the best places to stay, beaches to relax on, and restaurants to eat at and with only a 3.5 hours flight time from the UK, we think it’s the perfect choice for a holiday – Mykonos will certainly meet all your expectations and will not disappoint!

Countrybike comes to the Cuckoo Trail The app-based cycle rental company, set up by husband and wife team, Tim and Suzy Seddon in 2017, aims to make the Wealden countryside more accessible to its residents and visitors. Following the success of the Ashdown Forest cycle hire scheme, The Cuckoo Trail hire scheme is being rolled out in stages along the former 11-mile railway line throughout 2019. Bikes will be available to Photo shows L-R Suzy Seddon, Isabel hire at sites in Polegate, Horam and Heathfield from the end of April. Garden, Tim Seddon. Further sites in Hailsham and Hellingly will follow later in the year. Bikes can be hired by using a mobile app on a Pay-as-You-Go basis and cost just £5 per bike for the first hour (£2.50 per 30 minutes thereafter). A monthly subscription plan is also available on the mobile app offering even cheaper prices to those looking to use the bikes on a regular basis. Co-Founder of Countrybike Tim Seddon said: “By using internet enabled locks and a mobile app, the technology allows us to place bikes remotely without the need to be there to facilitate their hire and return. This in turn enables us to open up the countryside to bike hire in a way that simply has not been possible in the past. This opportunity fits well with our strategy to open up cycling to those wishing to explore the local countryside. With the Cuckoo Trail being mainly off-road and reasonably flat, we believe it is perfect for cyclists of all levels.” Unfortunately, a number of the bikes were subject to quite significant vandalism in Heathfield at the start of May along with another isolated incident at Polegate. So for the time being, the bikes have been removed from these sites whilst the company look into increased security to tackle this anti-social behaviour going forward. The bikes are still available to hire at the Horam site. Further details can be found at www.countrybike.co.uk
