We hope you survived the June deluge! Our gardens really needed that rain, but not the best environment for weddings, BBQ’s and festivals .See our special feature this month about how to create a stylish outdoor space without expensive landscaping. June was a busy month for Horam. We had the Wealden crematorium official open day for those of you curious to find out what is all about. Over 400 people attended the day, see P54 for more details. Broad Oak & Horam Junior Football Club held their annual tournament, Maynards Green School held their Summer Fair. July looks set to be another busy one, check out the What’s On pages. This month sees the return of the village’s annual Fun Day, can’t quite believe a year has flown by so quickly. There is plenty of information about what’s on at the Fun Day in this month’s Diary – some new attractions, Horam Home Kitchen’s Fun Day bake off, a fancy dress competition and loads of other great stuff! There are still stalls available for the day, see the Fun Day ad for contact details. Don’t miss it on Sun 14th July, it’s a great day out and raises much needed funds for local groups. The Diary will be there, do come and say hello. Also this month are plenty of open gardens under the NGS scheme; a very interesting talk from The Beachy Head Chaplaincy Trust about their literally, life saving work and TV’s Antiques Roadshow, filming at Battle Abbey! Don’t miss out on Horam Natural Therapy Centre’s taster day, where you can get to try all manner of different treatments from only £15. Have you registered and paid for your garden waste to be removed yet? Wealden have advised that from 1st July we no longer put our glass in our glass box, but in our main recycling bin – see their website for more details. The rebuilding of the Co-op frontage is now imminent. The plans had to be revised and go back to Wealden for approval, after it was discovered that more structural work was required for the foundations. There is still no news about the Post Office, but the Diary have asked manager Rachel to chase this up. We have been thinking about a letters page in the Diary – we’d love to know if you think this would be welcomed? We are now working on our August edition to ensure all is done before we take our holiday’s with our families. So, please if you have anything to share, do get in touch ASAP as we will be going to print a few days earlier than our usual deadline of the 16th of the month for our August edition. Best regards,

Here comes summer - keep your dog safe •
Consider walking in the cooler part of the day, early morning or later in the evening.
•
Some dogs love to sunbathe, but don’t let yours toast himself too much or he could get sunstroke. Use pet sunblock on a pink nose or hairless areas.
•
The onset of warmer weather may mean your dog picks up fleas, ticks or harvest mites. Grass seeds can work their way under the skin, so check your dog regularly on his return from your walks.
•
If you are thinking of taking a car journey with your dog, consider the weather and your journey in advance, especially if you don’t have air conditioning in your car. Think about whether the journey is absolutely necessary for your dog. If it is: o Make sure your dog has plenty of space in the car and isn’t confined or forced to sit in direct sunlight. o Make sure there is shade provided: even in an air-conditioned car a dog can become too hot if in full sun. o Make sure plenty of stops are taken with lots of water available to drink. A useful website is www.drivingwithdogs.co.uk - walks and dogfriendly pubs and coffee shops within five minutes of UK motorways. o Take cold water in a thermos rather than a plastic bottle so it stays cold rather than being lukewarm. o Never leave a dog unattended in a car, even with the window open and water available. Even cars left in the shade can heat up alarmingly quickly and every year dogs die from over heating.
Email dogtraining@wheelgates.co.uk and your dog training question or behaviour problem with your dog may be chosen to be answered in the next issue. Your name will not be published.

PLANNING UPDATE Rosemead
The build continues apace, even with the weather in June hampering progress. The larger 3/4/5 bedroom houses are now available for sale off plan from £369,995 - £539,995 with the offer of stamp duty on all but the 5 bedroom house being paid by the developer. Other schemes are available to help people buy these new homes. The Diary have enquired (at local people’s request) when the smaller houses and flats will be available for sale. We have yet to have confirmation from Bovis and one local resident was told on the phone recently, that they aren’t building any flats. The flats, social housing and smaller houses remain on their current plans, so unless the developer responds we are unable to provide any further information. This applies to the change from attenuation ponds on site to deal with groundwater to tanks. The Diary were still waiting for Wealden District Council and Bovis to comment at time of going to press. The Diary have also advised Bovis that the description of local amenities for the village is incorrect, that we no longer have a post office or newsagent as stated in the sales copy on their website.
Bimbo’s Woodyard
Building work has finally begun on this site, a couple of years after Bimbo was given notice from the yard where he had worked for 46 years. The site will feature 2 large executive homes, with some modification from the original plans made to materials used. A neighbour to the yard has suggested some great names for the houses - Crouch End, Old Woodyard House, what do you think?!
Crematoriam
The Wealden Crematorium threw it’s doors open to the general public on 15th June to showcase the facilities and answer any questions visitors might have. Please see P54 for more details. The contracted final section of the Sec 278 highway works were being completed mid June, so hoping all done by the time you read this and no more traffic lights on this stretch of road!
Wealden Local Plan
The Planning Inspector has finished her first review of the Local Plan. The Wealden Local Plan Examination Stage 1 will resume again on July 30 and July 31 9:30am at the East Sussex National Hotel, Little Horsted, Uckfield TN22 5ES. The Inspector will finish the Matter 1 HRA session held over from the 23 May 2019. This will be followed by matter 2 (Spatial Vision, Air Quality Considerations) which was held over from the 28 May 2019. Further details will be available nearer the time. Members of the public are welcome to come and observe. Please visit Wealden District Council’s website for more information or contact the Programme Officer: email lynette.benton@wealden. gov.uk; by post FAO Local Plan Programme Officer, Wealden District Council, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, BN27 2AX or telephone on 07977 415678. Heathfield Ironmongers celebrating....... This month Heathfield Ironmongers celebrate their hundred year anniversary! Before World War 1, an ironmongery company called A.F. Smith which was based in Hailsham, opened a shop in Heathfield. By 1st July 1919 this business had evolved to become Heathfield Agricultural and General Ironmongers Limited and was renamed in September 1919 as Heathfield Ironmongers Limited therefore, this year they are able to celebrate their Centenary. During the last one hundred years Heathfield Ironmongers have employed seven managers, the first being Mr William Phillips who managed from 1919 to 1974. After working in the shop for 10 years, Clare Smith, in 2010, was employed as the first female manager. She is still very busy keeping Heathfield Ironmongers strong presence in the High Street today . The business that Mr Phillips managed was more extensive than it is today. As well as the shop he also managed various buildings at the rear known as 'The Sheds'. The Sheds comprised of many different parts of the Heathfield Ironmongers business. There was 'Plumbing' which included the installation and servicing of boilers and pipework (this continued until the 1960s); 'Glaciers', a window-making and a key cutting service; a farrier who shoed the many local horses and a blacksmith that made items of ironwork, including these beautiful gates at Hadlow Down Church. It is understood that the blacksmiths was phased out in 1940s, after the Second World War. The 'Plumbers' continued to have a trade counter, lawn mowers were repaired and a concrete mixer was hired out! The trade counters finally closed in September 1993, the land was sold and developed into what is now the Co-op Car Park which opened in March 1995. During 1957 Heathfield Ironmongers developed Kent and Sussex Fuels which supplied heating oil to businesses and the general public. For many years Heathfield Ironmongers and Kent and Sussex Fuels displayed and demonstrated BBQs at the Heathfield Agricultural Show. . Kent and Sussex Fuels also presented a cup for ''Champion Ploughman. Reversable Plough' from 1970 to 1989.
22
Kent and Sussex Fuels was finally sold in 1996.
100 years of service to the community! The Heathfield Ironmongers shop continued to be re-fitted and developed into the shop that we see today (see images alongside) and experienced some interesting or memorable events along the way. The first ever January sale was in January 1969 and continues to be a firm favourite with their customers today. In 1970 the shop had to purchase new tills and adding machines for the advent of decimalisation! To enhance sales and to develop interest in new products for customers, the shop held a' Fondue Demonstration' with a professional chef during the Christmas of 1978. (see right). During the research for their centenary, many little anecdotes have come to light such as, in 1977 the manager at the time, Mr Dabson found their first ever wages book for 1919, with the following extract: W E Phillips then aged 32 joined the company and was paid 10d (old pence) an hour, his weekly wage was just over ÂŁ2.

HOBBIES & LESISURE Playing Latin American Rhythms
Silver Sounds is a fun, Brighton based percussion band playing mainly Brazilian rhythms on drums and various percussion instruments. It started life around 15 years ago as a group of older people showing they could have fun and make a noise while playing and enjoying the rhythms of samba, samba reggae, Cuban reggae, funk and many other Latin American rhythms led by our Mestre, Paul Deretti Dodd who has many years of immersion in these rhythms. He leads international groups of children at UNICEF events and leads or plays in many other Brighton bands. Silver Sounds Senior Samba is a community band for older people who are free to practise at lunchtime. They perform at festivals, marathons and other celebrations in and around Brighton and Hove. They also run workshops for small or large groups and can add a touch of carnival to any occasion. They are a friendly group of people who welcome newcomers. They meet in St George's Crypt, Kemptown from 12.30 to 14.30 every Friday. The Crypt is wheelchair accessible with a lift and a wheelchair friendly toilet. Just turn up. The first session is free. For bookings and related information phone Sue on 07786 219 438 Search for SILVER SOUNDS website for pictures & information. If you’re interested in coming along I go just about every Friday leaving Horam about 10:50 am returning at about 3.30 pm traffic dependant and can give you a lift if you wish. ROY on 01435 812718 or 07720 850716
Last month Co-op kindly donated funds from their Community Fund to two local groups. The first to benefit was Horam Village Hall, who will be using the money to make internal improvements. The second was Age We Care, another local community group helping older local people to meet up - see px for more details! HOBBIES & LESISURE THE HEFFLE GOLF SOCIETY Its likely, if you're under 45 that you are unaware that one of the most active Golf Societies in Sussex was formed 26 years ago in Heathfield. The HEFFLE GOLF SOCIETY has organised over 450 UK and European events since 1994 and the success we have had in this area is the reason we are trying to increase local interest again today . We play midweek at least once a month throughout the year and to date have played over 140 different courses. We are currently enjoying 4 rounds of golf in Southern Spain and in late June/ early July have a 3 game trip to the Dorset area. Between these events we will be playing on Tuesday June 18th at the Weald of Kent and then on Wednesday 17th July at a venue to be decided. We play courses with a little variation and surprise added during each year so keep an eye on our website www.hefflegolf.com for details. It's open to all and gives information on all of our events, future, current and past. There is NO JOINING FEE and NO ANNUAL SUBS. All we ask is for your participation and adherence to the levels of etiquette expected by golf courses. Male & female players of all abilities are welcome. What you pay is the price we are charged at each course for 18 holes and breakfast plus a small sum of about ÂŁ4 to cover our prize fund, our website and admin cost. Of course the whole purpose of this communication is to try to attract some new members so why not give us a try. Competitive, regular and varied golf without joining and being committed to one club was the original aim of the society, that's still the aim today. Ring us on 07777 682038 or email jeff.brain@btinternet.com if you'd like to find out more.

COMMUNITY Young at Heart have had another busy month! We have had a flower arranging demonstration from the fantastic Jenny - everyone's arrangements looked very professional! Little Tinkers Nursery School have been brilliant in supporting us for the majority of afternoons along with All Saints and St Richard's and Dallington Primary Schools. We hosted our stand at the Heathfield Show which proved a huge success and one we will definitely repeat. Angela and some members from the Cake and Wine Club Choir continue to entertain us on a Thursday morning wonderful! We have hosted two Cupcake Days in aid of Alzheimers Society - a cause close to our hearts. We are also supporting the petition against over 75 year old's having to pay for their TV licences - for some it is their only contact with the outside world and potentially the only voices they hear on a day by day basis. Should anyone have a friend/relative/neighbour who would like an outing - please contact Rachel - tel: 07971 032667 - we would love to meet you!

Wealden Crematorium officially opened The Diary attended Wealden District Council’s new crematorium public open day on Saturday 15th June. The open day provided visitors with the opportunity to gain an insight into the working of the Council’s new crematorium and take a look around the buildings and grounds in a relaxed and informal way. Their friendly staff were on hand to answer any questions visitors had. Visitors were able to visit the ceremony hall, the flower court, the book of remembrance room and the memorial gardens. They also had the chance to take a peek behind the scenes and were shown the crematory which houses the cremator and the emission control equipment etc. The crematorium has screens for those unable to get inside the main service hall at very well attended services, or watch live from anywhere else in the world if distance prohibits being there in person. Local suppliers supported the event. Refreshments were provided by Two Sister's Deli in Horam, their famous sausage rolls were very popular! There were also beautiful and inventive flower displays from Horam's Cuckoo Flower Co. There has been much thought into how to remember loved ones with options from a gold leaf on a contemporary metal tree sculpture to personalised, small 'tombs' to hold up to two urns. The newly landscaped grounds are gradually starting to become established and the wildflower meadows are now gaining some colour with poppies, daisies and cornflowers in bloom.

July Gardening Diary " St. Swithun's day if ye do rain, for forty days it will remain. St. Swithun's day if thou be fair, for forty days it'll rain nae mare." St Swithun was one of those attractive Saxon bishops, venerated by all and especially by the common folk of England, to whom he devoted his life's work. He would often be seen travelling to all corners of Saxon England on foot, giving alms and feasting the poor. Born during the reign of king Egbert and in his latter years tutoring the young Atheling Alfred, he became one of England's best loved saints. In keeping with his love of the common folk he gave orders that his body was to be buried under the pavement outside Winchester cathedral; "Where it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and the drops of rain from on high". But In 971 his remains were brought inside the new cathedral to lie beside the Egg kings of Wessex, but not before the outraged saint had cast down a tremendous deluge upon the workmen opening up his grave. The legend of the forty days of rain may have some scientific basis though: the jet stream will often have settled into a static position around the 15th of July (The Saint's feast day), if it lies north of the British isles we may count on a long period of continental high pressure, deflecting weather systems upon the Scots and Scandinavians and if to the south, Atlantic and northerly weather may prevail, giving a wet and dreary summer, though full of the life giving rain that St Swithun so loved. So, back down at ground level we are aware that the gardener's work is never finished and even now, with the beds and borders in their full blaze of summer glory, a thought must be given to winter and to next season. Spring flowering bulbs should be lifted and such subjects as autumn flowering Crocuses may be planted to give them a good chance to develop their flowers. Summer pruning is an important task in the fruit garden. The formation of fruit buds on trained and bush trees is encouraged by the shortening of the leading and lateral shoots at this season of the year. Any plum branches showing signs of silverleaf disease should be cut out at once and burned. This disease causes a metallic silvering of the leaf and can quickly spread around the whole tree. It is usually fatal. Now is the time for final thinning of apples. If the king fruit (The one in the middle of the cluster) has not already been removed and there are other fruits to take its place, then it is these king fruits that should go. Pears, plums and even dessert cherries will all repay careful thinning if there has been a heavy set. In the vegetable garden the planting of brassicas should be pushed ahead just as quickly as ground becomes vacant. Continue to sow salads such as lettuce and radish for succession. A last sowing of French beans for a late crop may be made. Runner and French beans should be fed as they begin to make pods. Onions and shallots may be lifted and dried once the foliage starts to wither. And a fine sight they make hanging from the rafters in the shed. Celery must be watered frequently or it will soon run to seed. If one kept a bag of soot from last Autumn's chimney cleaning as I'm sure we all did, a dusting of this makes an excellent deterrent to celery fly (one might try the local chimney sweep). Fruiting tomatoes should be fed regularly. This is a good time to gather herbs for drying, tied up in small bundles they make handsome companions to the knots of onions in the shed. Faded flower buds of Delphiniums, Lupins, and other early flowering perennials should be cut out before seed is set to encourage secondary growth. Roses too, must be regularlt dead-headed. If it is desired to secure autumn flowers from Lupins and Delphiniums, the plants should be cut down at the beginning of this month and watered in with a good fertiliser. Cut grass makes an excellent mulch for carrot and spinach beds and around bush fruits,
62
July Gardening Diary raspberries and Sweet Peas, Lilies, Dahlias, Gladioli and other flowering plants, though not laid on too thick for fear of starving the soil of nitrogen. As roses come to the end of their first flush of flowering, they can be fed with a high potash fertiliser to boost the second lot of flowers. Dead-heading of all faded blooms should be carried out at every opportunity. Dahlias can be fed now but be careful to keep the feed well away from stems and leaves. Taller varieties should be securely staked. Towards the end of the month we may start propagating many shrubs. For lack of space, I refer reader to the relevant literature for methods of propagation. Cuttings of Forsythia, flowering Currant, Escallonia, Weigela and Deutzia and many other subjects will all root easily. Whilst we may allow ourselves to sit back in the shed indulging in a long pipe and quiet ruminations over our onions and herbs so fragrantly drying in the rafters, with its soundtrack of cooing wood pigeons intermingled with leather on Australian stumps, we must still occasionally gird ourselves to keep the hoe going as often as hoers' elbow will allow. All borders should receive vigorous attention from the Dutch hoe at least every seven days.

Maynards Green Forest School Year 6 This term, Foxes class has been learning about the incredible story of Ernest Shackleton and his attempt to cross Antarctica in his ship the Endurance. The children have been thinking about what life might have been like for Shackleton and his crew. As part of their Forest School Learning they experienced what it must have been like for the crew to perform simple tasks, like tying knots, in the extreme cold of the Antarctic!.
Despite the cold Forest School afternoons, the children showed great resilience and completed their tasks.

Local people: How I conquered my addiction I started smoking as a pre-teen. I remember a time when I went round the streets with my friends looking for discarded dog ends for tobacco to roll our own cigarettes. I also remember smoking rolled up cigarette papers on their own, I wouldn't recommend it your throat really burns! These were experiments and I didn't start smoking properly until I was 15-16. I stole my first packet of cigarettes from the ice-cream parlour I worked in, during the summer holidays. The first drag on that cigarette was really powerful and made me feel dizzy. Over the next few years, I tried at times to cut down or give up. I tried herbal cigarettes but I couldn't inhale them! I tried smoking a pipe and cigars - these I could inhale! I also tried basic will power but after a few days, felt a bit weird in the head. I did manage to give it up smoking for a while, but I went back to it and was eventually chain smoking roll ups. I was especially bothered about it when I read the Bible and it said that we are slaves to whatever overcomes us, and I knew I was a slave to tobacco. I felt miserable about it, but at the same time powerless to do anything about it. It was at this low point I decided to be baptised. I decided to do so because I had read that Jesus was baptised and I reasoned that if I were to follow him, which I sincerely wanted to, then I needed to be baptised too. Also, it had occurred to me that when I became a Christian, I noticed that I stopped swearing - without even trying! On the day of my baptism I deliberately didn't smoke. I felt really bad. so I asked Jesus to help me. That evening after the baptism I thought I would come out of the water feeling ecstatic, I didn't, I just felt wet! I got back to my flat and found an old dog end I had thrown into the grate. I lit it and had a puff and felt nothing at all. The addiction to nicotine had completely gone! Jesus had answered my prayer and not once in the last 37 years have I wanted to smoke! To find out more about how Jesus sets people free visit www.christianityexplored.co.uk or come to church. There are two great, friendly churches in Horam. Horam Chapel (where I go) and Christ Church. You will be guaranteed a warm welcome at both. By Peter Bauer

Visit Namibia....a land of big skies, big contrasts & a big heart… Namibia is never at the top of many people’s ‘traditional’ safari destinations, but Tracy and Bianca from The Travel Concept excel in searching out incredible destinations that are a little more adventurous, whilst still offering the same high-quality that one would expect from an independent travel agency. ‘Experiential travel’ is the new word in the travel industry and with all their contacts and knowledge, The Travel Concept can help their clients experience so much more than the average package holiday has to offer. Namibia is one of those ‘off-the-beaten-track’ destinations – you won’t find big cats at every turn and the animals make it difficult for you to find them in their corner of this beautiful African wilderness; but find them you will! Spend a day scouring rugged mountain scenery for a herd of desert adapted elephants or hike to find a precious rhino with its new born calf. These magical moments only add to the sense of satisfaction when you do come across them and the overwhelming sense you are in one of the few remaining truly “wild” areas of our planet. There are few places in Africa where the wildlife comes second to the stunning scenery. At four times the size of the United Kingdom but with only a population of 2 million, the feeling of space and solitude is truly breath-taking. Damaraland is similar to the dramatic mountain scenery of the Scottish Highlands, but as the views get bigger and go on and on in every direction, without sight nor sound of civilization, it’s unlike anywhere else on earth! You can split your visit between driver guides and a fly-in segment along the renowned “Skeleton Coast.” The combination makes for some amazing contrasts, both with the comfort of a guide who knows all the best routes with picnic spots on land coupled with stunning scenic views from the air. Finally, pass over the “great sand sea” in a light aircraft – a memory you will never forget! From the elephants, rhinos and rock engravings to shipwrecks, seafood, sunsets and sand dunes, Namibia has so much to offer that to capture it all in a word restricted article would be impossible! However, if you are interested in finding out for yourself just how exciting your next holiday could be, call The Travel Concept and speak to the experts!
You deserve a holiday… …and your relaxation starts before you even hit the beach. We’ll save you hours of research to find you the perfect holiday. And because we’re independent travel experts we’ll get you a better deal too. To plan your perfect holiday contact Tracy and Bianca on 01435 866555.

Easy ways to create a stylish garden Luckily for us, living in the South East means we get to spend a good amount of time in our garden during the summer months. All the efforts gone in over winter & spring are easy to see at this time of year. So whether it’s BBQ’s, garden parties or just relaxing in a deck chair with the paper, how can you really personalise your garden and create the look you like? A stylish garden need not involve a hefty price tag or months of workmen landscaping your back yard. There are some simple ways to add your mark and create a garden that you want to spend all your time in.
Accessorise your outdoor space There are so many items to choose from at May’s Terracotta in The Horam Emporium. From statuary, arbors and other unique & wonderful garden accessories – there is something to suit any garden. May has over 34 years experience in the business and has customers who come back to her time and again to source specific items. Her business almost started by accident after she & her husband retired to Spain in 1983. Deciding that they weren’t quite ready for the retired lifestyle, May noticed the range and design of garden pots available on the Costa Brava and thought that the UK might be a good place to showcase them. So they bought a consignment and used a horse-box to transport them back home. Back then business was much simpler! They used to visit independent garden centres with their horse box, the retailer chose what they wanted, they off loaded it and then May typed up the invoice on her portable typewriter and the retailer paid for the goods! As time went on they based themselves in locally and began to source items other than pots, going as far afield as the Far East to find new and interesting items and shipping them back to UK in a container. Due to ill health they decided to pack up the wholesale business and concentrate on retail. May had the good idea of planting up pots and having charity sales for various local and national charities. Her first one was for the NSPCC and was such a success, the charity asked her to repeat it. This one off event turned into 14 years worth of running these sales benefiting big and small charities. “Mays“ moved to Horam Manor and set up an area as a retail nursery but due to planning issues had to leave this site. However, Wessons café became The Horam Emporium and May became one of their first retailers. The products available at The Horam Emporium are just a taster of what May can offer, check out her website (currently being updated) for more products or ask if you are looking for something specific.
An extra room on the outside If you find yourself outgrowing your home or need a quiet space to spend time on your hobby, there is a ready-made solution! Aside from being Horam’s largest employer, Newton and Frost fencing was established in 1979 and has since developed into one of the largest fencing contractors in the UK. In 2009 the company undertook a large expansion with its premises in Horam, a new yard area now holds a vast stock of timber and fencing materials. They also offer a complete design service of stunning buildings ranging from contemporary garden offices, summerhouses, workshops, sheds, log cabins to bespoke builds. So if you’ve decided you need some space for work, drawing, practising your instrument or giving your teenagers somewhere they can learn to be semi-independent, check out their range of 16 different designs!

Make a statement You will be spoilt for choice at Roundwood of Mayfield for items that really make a statement. A dazzling array and choice of planters, statuary, firepits & burners, water features, barrels & water butts, tap-stands, oak cubes and plinths, gazebo’s, architectural pieces, outdoor buildings and so much more. If you are looking to add a traditional touch to your outdoor space, check out their garden furniture. They have a unique range which includes fold away wrought iron benches, reclaimed timber coffee tables and oak sleeper benches hand crafted by them in East Sussex.
DIY garden design If you are on a budget, creating your perfect look needn’t be limited by your spend. There are many ways to upcycle old items as accessories for the garden. Pretty much anything can be used as a pot as long as there are holes in it to allow drainage – from old tin cans, mop buckets, watering cans, cook ware, colanders, the options are endless! Build a sofa out of old wooden pallets, turn a vintage window into an outdoor mirror. Scouring tips and skips is always worth mentioning. See these pictures from a local garden for some inspired uses of indoor items, outside! How about creating a bespoke piece of art for your garden with local basket maker Dominic Parette at Sussex Willow? See P76 for details.
