You know how us Sussex folk love our fireworks - well after a 2 year hiatus - we finally have some local displays coming up - see our What's On page for more details! We hope that you are enjoying the delights of open fires & wood burners, hot chocolate and onesies after your stunning Autumnal walks in our beautiful countryside (the bits that haven't yet been built on!). This month sees the beginnings of Christmas activity, the very exciting Santa's grotto in Horam in December and start your Christmas shopping at Heathfield Women in Businesses Christmas Market on Sat 27th November at Union Church, Heathfield and Horam Manor Christmas Market on the 14th. Lots of brilliant stalls from local artists & crafters - hand made Christmas gifts and decorations, ceramics, toys, beauty, homewares and much more. Don’t miss Horam Christmas Fun Night either on the 2nd December, come and support your local traders. In September The Green Party held a very useful Planning Workshop for local residents to help them respond to over development in Horam and surrounding areas. They covered planning law, a view point from local & district councillors and how they are trying to challenge the status quo - read more about this on P40. And have you despaired at our throwaway society and really would like to get things fixed, rather than adding them to landfill? Did you know about the brilliant Repair Cafe that is held monthly at Horam Village Hall? Take your broken item into the experts at Horam Village Hall to see if it can be given a new lease of life. HORAM HIGH STREET – RESURFACING
We have been told by East Sussex County Council that our High Street is to be resurfaced with the work due to start on 25th and last until 29th October. By the time you receive this edition of the Village Diary the work should have been completed. The High Street has been in poor condition for a long time now, so this resurfacing is welcome. They have apologised for any noise disruption this may have caused. Please be patient and polite to the contractors doing the work. Any comments should be directed to ESCC Highways (https://www.eastsussex.gov.uk/roadsandtransport/roads/) or to Bob Bowdler our County Councillor cllr.bob.bowdler@eastsussex.gov.uk.

Our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for Horam (Cathy Gilling) intends to hold a public surgery outside the Co-Op at 10.00 hrs (10 am) on Tuesday 2nd November. This is an opportunity for you to discuss any matters that concern you. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY AND COMMEMORATION
The Parish Council will be laying a wreath at the War Memorial (at Christ Church, Horebeech Lane) on Sunday 14th November as part of the Village commemoration ceremony. Another wreath will be laid at the Memorial Garden (at the corner of Hillside Drive and High Street) at 11.00hrs on 11th November to coincide with the National two minutes of silence. In this Centenary Year of the Royal British Legion, the Parish Council has installed a ‘Tommy’ silhouette at the Memorial Garden. Tommy will be removed after Remembrance Sunday and then used again in future years.
PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE – Horam Parish Council will be planting a Cherry Tree in the
Memorial Garden at the corner of High Street and Hillside Drive. The date to be advised. Residents are encouraged to plant a tree in their own gardens, if space permits. We may not have the space that Capability Brown had, but we can still invest in the future ‘look’ of Horam; as well as do a small bit towards capturing carbon dioxide.

The drainage works have been completed. Unfortunately, we have been advised that the Play Park should not re-open until the newly sown grass has grown sufficiently. The good news is that the newly sown grass is sprouting well, but it has not yet grown sufficiently to allow re-opening of the Play Park. The skate board park will remain open while this work is being carried out.

Repair Café Heathfield open at last! We waited over 18 months to finally open the doors. Our new Repair Café launched on 11 September in Horam Village Hall. Seven skilled women and men were lined up to help local residents repair rather than throw away faulty goods: a whole array of different objects were rejuvenated, from a family tent with a faulty zip, much-loved teddy bear, toaster, computer, stool to a broken axe handle, motor bike screw, clock, radio and lacklustre jewellery in need of polishing. BUT, why were there no broken bicycles to fix? Three young experts were eager to help but not a single bicycle arrived. Does the much-talked-about cycling revolution not apply to Horam and Heathfield? Customers left content with the help they had received; those who simply wanted to check things out, promised to come back next month with their own faulty objects. There was a lot of amiable chat between repairer and client and amongst the visitors over tea or coffee and succulent home-made cakes. It proved, if it needed proof, how invaluable this project is. It helps save money and the planet by denting our throw-away culture; and, last but not least, it fosters a community spirit which we all need badly, especially after the pandemic lockdowns. October Gardening Diary “If there's ice in November that will bear a duck, there'll be nothing after but sludge and muck." The weather this month is rarely an incentive to work in the garden, but the abandonment of the garden to its own devices during the dark months is a great mistake as there is as always much to be done, right through winter. Autumn digging will have been started by Battle of Britain Day with the digging-in of compost, manure and we hope shoddy too. This digging-over should be carried on and completed this month, no need to break down the clods as rain and frost over the winter will render the diggings down to a good workable condition. In the established border deep digging will not be possible, but a light forking between the shrubs will help to aerate the soil, whilst digging in any compost, dung, leaves and annual weeds will increase the humus content of the soil. All good things. This month is a good time to plant roses, fruit trees and ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs. It is surprising how much root they will make by Christmas if planted whilst there is still some warmth left in the soil. Firm staking is essential with any new planting and should never be an afterthought; moving roots are fatal to the prospects of newly planted trees and shrubs. Autumn bonfires, surely one of the great joys of gardening; A still and misty November morning, a crackling bonfire, a thermos of sweet tea and a long pipe is all that we wretched sinners may reasonably hope for. Having established working or even friendly relations with our non asthmatic or bronchial neighbours we should not feel guilty at spending a whole morning leaning on our rakes musing at the flames and breathing in the evocative scents of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, particulates and the sundry other volatile organic compounds that make up that most comforting of autumn fragrance. Aside from the sheer idle enjoyment of it all, this is the only way to dispose of rose leaves with mildew or black spot, apple and pear leaves with scab, white fly on cabbage and Sprout leaves and blighted tomato and potato foliage. Putting such stuffs in the 'Green bin' may risk spreading disease around the county through the bags of compost thus sold on, likewise putting it on our own compost heaps ensures disease next year. We are told that composting creates Methane, a green house gas twenty times as effective as the Carbon dioxide released by a bonfire. The lawn may need some attention at this time of year, we might to aid drainage and increase aeration by easing any compaction; A garden fork pushed in half way and jerked backwards will effectively loosen the top layers, the lawn should be worked over in this way every six to eight inches, this may seem an onerous job and as we may still be wheezy from our morning by the bonfire, may be delegated to any under-employed youths we may uncover about the house or indeed any child deemed capable of hard labour.

Development Update Helping residents fight over development On 26th September the Green Party held a planning workshop in Horam Village Hall, `Wealden's Beautiful Countryside: How we can stop the concrete spreading'. It was a great success. The hall was packed, the seven speakers (from all levels of local government and Horam anti-planning movement) talked about various aspects of planning, from the law, to the way district councillors deal with applications, to the influence of parish and town councils, Green Party alternative ideas and Horam local activism. See a list of the material considerations residents are meant to quote in any objections to planning application on the following page. Horam Village Hall Management Committee Vacancy for Two Charity Trustees and Notice of Annual Meeting – Friday 19th November 2021 Would you like to join us as a trustee of Horam Village Hall and Recreation Ground charity no. 305527 This past year has been another busy one for the Village Hall committee, with continuing improvement works throughout the hall and recreation ground that have included outdoor table tennis, new windows, re-sanded floor, the outdoor planters and the invaluable defibrillator. We continue to work on the Get Active Pathway (GAP) and pump track as we await the decision on the planning application so that we can start to fundraise for this well supported project We still have projects to pursue and continue to fundraise for these; new kitchen roadside signage, electric charging points and cycle racks. As a committee we hope to have developed, and continue to do so, a village hall that the village can be proud of and willing to use; one that is great value for money and a venue suitable for any number of uses and occasions - a venue for entertainment, community events and leisure activities. As volunteers, is very much appreciated the time committee members give up, we have a booking secretary who takes care of the regular hall users (each night of the week) and the private bookings at the weekends. The management committee comprises of charity trustees and representatives of the main user groups (Scouts, Football, Bowls, Tennis, Allotments, and the Flower Show). The committee meet a maximum of six times per year to take care of the management of the hall.
The annual meeting will take place on 19th November 7:30pm at the hall – please join us, all welcome
