September 2022 Female led modern funeral directors five star reviews. HORAM & VINES CROSS VILLAGE DIARY

White Feather FUNERALS Lucy and Dawn at White Feather were excellent in all aspects of organising my dad’s funer al. Due to family coming from abroad we needed to arrange things quickly. From our first meeting I found Lucy’s compassion and understanding, and easy character, gave me confidence that everything would be arranged efficiently and to a high standard, which it was. I chose White Feather Funerals as I loved the fact it was female led, and as dad had been cared for by 5 female carers at home, felt it was fitting that his final journey be conducted by ladies. I would not hesitate to recommend Lucy and Dawn to anyone seeking a truly compassionate, efficient, and down to earth team. Thank you so much White Feather. Mrs A Proud to have 23 verified 5 reviews. Female led, independent funeral director. Supporting and empowering you in celebrating a loved one’s life, at the end of their life, however you choose. Traditional to contemporary and everything else in between. Independent personal service. Transparent and open minded. Last month saw some challenging temperatures and whilst gardeners anguished, beach babies were happy, then the flash floods came. As temperatures rise fires in summer become more commonplace, a fire broke out in Grange Close in July destroying a hedge and damaging the neighbouring houses. We aren’t helping climate change matters by concreting over all of our green pasture land in South Wealden. Sadly, last month the government inspector found in favour of the developer for the land adjacent to Old Orchard House, giving the green light to 38 houses opposite Rosemead. Now, Horam is facing another possible loss of green fields with a potential extension to the Rosemead estate – the application for Cauldavon that is immediately to the east of Rosemead and is the field that is traversed by Horam 11 a very popular public footpath. There is a general strength of feeling that enough is enough. If you feel overwhelmed about the over development of the village, maybe you would like to sign a petition for this particular planning ap plication, that if successful will merge Horam into the hamlet of Marle Green? If you would like to add your signature to object to this application then please email hvcvillagediary@gmail.com See P42-43 for full details. Following on from recent incidents of anti social behaviour in and around Horam Rec with vandalism, smashed glass on the football pitches, drug deals being done in the carparks and dangerous driving, local groups and the police have been looking to address this issue. It has been agreed that more CCTV is required and grants are currently being sought for this. In addition to this, there has been some great news – a new 12 week programme funded by Horam Parish council starts this month to give local young people stuff to do, see P22 for full de tails. Please remember to report anti social behaviour so it can be tackled, see the Horam Parish Council Update for contact details. But it isn’t all bad news, this summer saw much community spirit with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations and Horam Fun Day – two very successful demonstrations of what good can come when we work together as a community. Wishing you a fruitful September.

Carry your precious memories with you. MEADOW MEMORIALS Abby Lamb Memorial jewellery created with compassion Cremation ashes - Hair - Pet fur - Breastmilk Meadow memorials jewelleryabbyfromthemeadow@gmail.commeadowmemorials
Meadow Memorials was started by local lady Abby Lamb in lock-down. She was already making beautiful jewellery using pressed wild flowers and resin with her com pany From the Meadow by Abby and during lockdown she had been asked to create a cremation ashes ring for a friend. Using the skills she had as an experienced resin jeweller, she quickly realised that producing memorial jewellery that means so much, felt like a huge honour. She works with cremation ashes (both human and pet), hair, fur, horse mane, dried flowers, fabric, buttons and even breastmilk, which is becoming popular as a way of commemorating that precious time. Backgrounds available range from plain colours, shimmer backgrounds and crushed synthetic opal or crushed coloured glass, all of these give a different effect. She works mainly in 925 silver and 9k gold but can also work in non precious metals if your budget is limited. She can mix a wide variety of colours and has been asked to match items such as eye colour, a special dress and a dog collar. She uses a very high quality resin and only works on one piece at a time, to give each commission a hundred percent of her attention. She takes the creation of these memorial pieces very seriously and treats every ‘inclusion’ that she is given with the utmost respect and care. Abby says that some people know exactly what they want, while others like to be advised. Abby prides herself on having a friendly, approachable nature - so if you would like to chat without obligation, then please do get in touch with this talented local artist via email or social media.

The recently launched Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a grant of £5,000.00 towards the costs of in stalling a heat pump system. Renewable heating systems are also zero-rated for VAT. As with any heating system it is important to ensure that the amount of heat lost from a property is kept to a minimum. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme requires minimum levels of thermal efficiency such as loft insulation, double glazing, and cavity wall insulation to qualify for the grant. The Future of Heating
Ltd have been designing, installing, and maintaining Air Source Heat Pumps for over 10 years; in all types of property from new builds to properties that are over 300 years old. An Air Source Heat Pump harvests ‘free’ energy from the outside air, typically delivering three to four times more heat energy than the electrical energy that the system uses. This heat energy is transferred into the heating / hot water system and operates in a similar way to a conventional boiler system via underfloor heating or modified radiator systems.
With high energy prices, and the transition away from fossil fuels being very much in the spotlight many people are considering changes to the way we drive, the way we power and heat our homes - the future is becoming electric; so how does the ‘electric future’ of heating work, and is it right for your Aspenhome?Renewables

As a response to the anti-social behaviour we have recently been experiencing in Horam mainly centered around the recreation ground, local groups were looking for solutions to combat this and support local young people. A meeting was held with Sussex Clubs for Young People at the village hall last month, resulting in the introduction of a 12 week programme of SCYP’s Purple Bus Outreach Scheme. Funded by Horam Parish Council, the Purple Bus will visit the recreation ground every Mon day evening from 18:30 to 20:30 starting 12th September. The Street mate youth workers will reach out to young people where they hang out, offering support, guidance and games and activities for a group such as rounders or football. A meeting took place last month at the Village Hall, to allow the organisers to give the user groups on the recreation ground and the public more details and aims of the Streetmatescheme.workers go out on foot with their mobile unit. Whatever they are doing they are working to build trust with the young people and the surrounding community They have a long experience of working with a variety of issues facing young people such as: • involvement in anti-social behaviour or petty crime • getting into trouble at school or being frequently excluded • being affected by relationship problems • using drugs, alcohol or other harmful substances • being at risk of homelessness or family breakdown Focusing on the future is really important for young people. This means helping them to access training or further education is a big part of what they offer. They empower young people to make positive decisions about their lives and build their confidence and self-esteem, enabling them to access opportunities so they can reach their full potential. https://sussexcyp.org.uk/streetmate

ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR At HPC’s full Council meeting in August an idea was proposed to engage with “Sussex Clubs for Young People” to find out the needs of local youngsters and to try and find a way forward to prevent the anti-social behaviour escalating. It is hoped we can work with this Group and run a pop-up Youth Club over 12 weeks and find more permanent ways of reducing some of the issues we are currently experiencing. After a recent theft of the seat on the Zip Wire we have now had the Team Swing stolen (cost in the region of £1,500). So what I hear you ask are the great jobs of the month?
The harvesting of fruit and the digging-in of dung. Apples and pears remaining on the branch may be picked just as soon as they will readily part from the tree, those allowed to fall will inevitably be bruised and bruises are fatal to the prospects of stored fruits, though not to the making of cider. Raspberries and blackberries may be pruned, cut ting out all stems which have borne fruit this year. Main crop potatoes should be lifted as soon as the haulm dies down, there is nothing to be gained by leaving them in the ground and in the event of a wet spell there is every prospect of them making secondary growth.
The digging-over and manuring of the ground starts this month, whilst there is warmth left in the soil for the dung to fester down before winter inertia sets in. The full benefits of dung may only be gained when applied with deep digging, the best results gained by trenching or ‘bastard digging’, which may seem a penance but only after a hard spell of bastard digging may we lean back against the shed to fully savour that long pipe whilst gloating over our superior diligence and work ethic.Traditionally animal manures have been the staple fare, the best is that which has been dry stored, the value of dung is greatly reduced when left for years in the elements. Avoid using dung which contains wood chippings or saw dust as these can be detrimental to the soil. Pig and sheep droppings are higher in nitrogen than horse and cow. For heavy soils, like those in our gardens, we should use strawy ma nures. The compost heap is a good substitute. The heap should be built up with alternating layers of green soft stuffs and slightly woody fibrous cuttings. If one has garden lime to hand, a sprinkling every six inches is helpful. Chicken guano will act as a great accelerator. Faster and better results are gained from a covered heap; a sheet of old corrugated iron or even sacks to keep out excessive rain and to keep in some heat. The compost is ready to use when it smells earthy. For very heavy soils we may contemplate the digging-in of shoddy; a good time to discreetly dig in those woolly Christmas jumpers. For those of us that enjoy beach walks, we may fill our boots with seaweed, which makes an excellent addition to the soil. Green manures are a good substitute for dung, there are many varieties out there and the good gardener should always have a packet of seeds by them; whenever a patch becomes vacant it may be sown and the resulting growth dug in. We shouldn’t forget to lime the veg. patch annually, though not for the root beds. Lime has the joyful ability to cause flocculation among the fine particles in clay and so make our soil more workable as well as balancing the acidity caused by heavy cropping from the soil; lime never to be applied with manures or compost, a three months’ gap to be Thoseobserved.keen on onions will be sowing now, the reader having remembered to first prepare the ground with those dry-stored ashes saved from the wood burner. Lettuce and parsley for winter use may be sown on recently vacated ground, dug over but not maEvergreennured. shrubs, including hollies and conifers may be planted now. Rhododendrons may be trans planted but care must be taken to keep the roots from drying out.
‘September blow soft ‘till the fruit’s in the loft’ 38
Early bulbs may be planted, including crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaria and narcissi and also bienni als such as wallflowers, foxgloves, canterbury bells and verbascum. Sweet peas may be treated as ordinary autumn-sown hardy annuals, the seeds sown outdoors now where they are to grow next year, choosing a sheltered and well drained spot.
Look to increase our stock in the borders by division of existing plants. Many fleshy-rooted perennials will take root after division now and may safely face the winter. If left for another six weeks they will be ready for slumber and will then lie inert in cold wet soil, possibly rotting off before the spring awak ening. Michaelmas daisies now in flower may become heavy when wet, it is as well to stake these. Climbers such as clematis and wisteria may be cut back now. Climbing roses will lately have been sending up new shoots, these will bear the best flowers next year and should be tied in now as they are brittle and easily damaged by winter gales. More than ever, the hoe is your friend - September is the great month for weeds they will do great mischief if overlooked at this late stage.

WD/2022/1575/MAJ ERECTION OF 15 DWELLINGS, OPPOSITE FRESHFIELDS MAYNARDS GREEN. Previously the application for 26 houses was refused, the revised number of houses
irrelevant to the reasons for refusal. Development Update
This monthly update isn’t meant to be an exhaustive update on all applications in the area. There are plenty of small infill applications that won’t be detrimental to the area, I just try to highlight those that may have a more substantial impact. is

The overdevelopment of Horam I expect many of you are tired of reading about new planning applications in and around the village and being implored to write in with your objection to Wealden’s Planning department. Only to be asked again and again to object to subsequent applications for the same site or submit your thoughts to an Inspector, when a developer launches an appeal for an application that has turned down. You may think it isn’t worth doing, because the applications all eventually get approved and nothing we as local residents can do, will make any difference. I understand this, as I often feel that all the thousands of hours I have spent over the last 7 years, keeping abreast of applications, communicating them to the community, advising on what to object on, who to write to - have been wasted hours as more and more applications get the green light. However, like many people my dogged determination is driven by the nagging fear that we are losing this green space forever and that the impact on the climate and our environment is wholly negative. Yes people need houses, but the current calculations the government uses are based on, are out of date. People also need infrastructure and employment to make development sustainable, both of which we are lacking in Wealden. It seems to make logical sense to build where these two things exist and to make these new houses affordable, sustainable and energy efficient. Did you know that in the last 3 years WDC has added zero social housing stock for local residents? But profit margin drives the market and logic is therefore often overshadowed. What we have to ask ourselves, is if we just don’t bother, how much more will be allocated to Horam in the coming years? If we continue to fight to keep green pasture then we may stem the tide, if we choose to do nothing we will continue to be flooded with more and more building and find ourselves living in a village with heavy traffic, increased levels of pollution, unable to get a place for our kids in the local school, an appointment at the doctors, have a view of a sea of red houses on our bike ride or walk on the Cuckoo Trail and suffer the consequences on the environment. Challenges are being made by Wealden and councillors on numbers, request for counting those already approved but not built out in those numbers and to Highways and Southern Water on their assurances they can cope with more dwellings (when anecdotally residents see they can’t). So, if you are able to voice your concerns to Wealden, please continue to do so.
• It is outside the village development boundary in the Council’s Local Plan
• As elevated pasture overlooking the High Weald AONB and crossed by a much-used footpath, it is a highly valued part of the countryside setting of the village.
Development Update
45 Reasons to object: • Site is wholly within the AONB (Area of outstanding natural beauty) • Development backs onto the Cuckoo Trail. • Traffic & parking already an issue because of the school. • No spaces for children on this development at oversubscribed local school. • No amenities in Maynards Green – so wholly car dependant. • Issues with access. WD/2022/1694/MAO ERECTION OF UP TO 46 DWELLINGS AT CAULDAVON, HOREBEECH LANE AND FIELD BEHIND, ACCESS VIA ROSEMEAD
The following are:
• It’s development would lead to the complete coalescence of Horam and Marle Green, contrary to Local Plan polices.
• Horam has already seen, or has committed, a substantial number of new dwellings, such that this is not justified. A petition has been organised by local residents to submit to the planning officer and will be brought round to residents to sign. If you haven’t been asked and would like to sign it then please email hvcvillagediary@gmail.com and we will pass on the request.
Lucy Atabey
Christ Church Fellowship meets on Tuesday September 27th at 2pm. Our speaker is Andrew Walker he will tell us about the work of Matthew 25 in Eastbourne. The meeting will be followed by afternoon tea. All welcome
• The development would spoil the rural character of the historic Laundry Lane
• The field is too far from the village’s main services and bus stops to provide ready access to local, or wider, services by non-car modes, contrary to national policies.
Reasons to object: Those residents living on Horebeech Lane including Rosemead will have already been subjected to 4 years of noise, dust and light pollution, increased traffic from the build out of Rosemead as well as the inadequate road layout. However, these unfortunately are not ‘material considerations’ that the planning department will take into account.
