Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary
November 2020
Doing funerals differently!
Dear Readers, Your Editor is breathing a MASSIVE sigh of relief as we begin November because her lovely joint Editor Dawn is finally back!!!! You have no idea how happy this makes me, her financial finesse and attention to detail make life so much less stressful. Welcome back Dawn – we missed you! As we head towards Christmas in such uncertain times, we ask that you support local businesses when buying gifts and food for the festive season. The small, independent traders are relying on this busy period to compensate for the disruption caused by lockdown earlier this year. Because of Covid, Horam traders are unable to offer the usual format of the Horam Christmas Fun Night and instead are planning a “Horam Christmas Shopping Day”. Local shops are hoping to do a Christmas shopping day on Saturday 5th December, with a outdoor treasure hunt, village raffle with cash prizes in Horam pounds and hopefully a Father Christmas! With customers being spread out through the day and a socially distanced Santa outside somewhere, we are sure we can get something to work in lieu of the Fun Night. We are thinking we could also pipe some carols into the street, if public singing is still banned. Local lady Kelly Bruce was aware that local artisans were going to struggle this year, given that Christmas markets are not able to go ahead, so she launched A Countryside Christmas virtual winter market on Facebook to give local people the opportunity to see all that was on offer from local artists & retailers. Search for A Countryside Christmas – Heathfield Winter Fair on Facebook. In Heathfield local traders, with the support of the Heathfield Chamber of Commerce, have recently launched a campaign called “Think Heathfield” to get local people thinking about shopping with the many independent local retailers this Christmas, rather than the big brands and online stores.
So stay safe & well and shop local. Best wishes,
wn xx Lucy & Da Joint Editors

Doing funerals differently! After opening our doors in October we have been busy seeing local celebrants, other local service providers and finishing off our snagging list!
Forward thinking
In our first week we were delighted to be asked by a lovely, local lady to help her plan her funeral. Unlike many people, even though she isn’t suffering from any major health problems, this lady had thought about her final send off in detail. She explained that she wanted to make sure that her family knew exactly what she wanted and that they didn’t have to second guess what would be right for her. She explained that it was important for her to know that everything had been taken care off, to avoid any additional stress on her loved ones at such a difficult time. We feel really strongly about the emotional & practical benefits of planning ahead, which is why we have devoted a whole section of our website just to that. There is a simple no-obligation form to complete on-line for free, prompting you to think about much more than the basics – like your Desert Island Disc top 10, what colours you’d like people to wear, what you would like to leave friends & family to remember you by and much more. If you’d rather do it in person, we’d love to help record your wishes over a cuppa.
The limits of a format
It may surprise you to know that there are plenty of venues you can hold a funeral. The service does not need to be limited to a church or a crematorium. We are blessed in Wealden with some beautiful venues from barns to oast houses. You can have a service (led by whoever you want) and a wake at the same venue. That means there is no break in proceedings, no-one has to navigate their way to another location and most importantly, you aren’t under the same time restraints as you would be at a crematorium or following the formula of a church service. By their nature, both settings will offer the same format (more or less) for every funeral. If you decide to opt for an alternative venue you can have more time, which means more flexibility and additional content to create a truly, personalised send off. Close friends and family can choose to have a committal at church or crematorium later that day, or even the next day.
The restrictions of tradition
Did you know that you don’t have to have a hearse for a funeral, or a limousine? Just because this is what has been traditionally done historically, doesn’t mean it is compulsory. You can choose another more fitting mode of transport to the funeral or just go in your own cars. There is of course nowadays, much more choice with coffins. Many more durable, recyclable natural materials from cardboard, felt, wool, willow & much more. Far too much money is spent on high end coffins that will go in the ground or into the cremator. It is imperative that families are shown the wide choice available. We promise we will NEVER give you a huge file of coffins to look at, but a thoughtfully curated recommendation of just a handful to choose from. And if what you want isn’t there, we can still source it.
A different look & feel
Traditionally funeral directors shop windows have been shuttered or cluttered with urns or other funeral accessories. We have a bright, airy window that allows everyone passing to see clearly into our premises, with Pete the Peacock in pride of place in our window. Pete is the face of our company as he represents the white feather connection and also honours a dear friend Lucy (one of the founders) lost last year. His name was Ade and he died suddenly & tragically a year ago – you can read more about him and how he inspired Lucy to follow her dream, on our website. Ade moved from London to Norfolk into the coach house on a country estate and inherited his own peacock called Pete. At Ade’s funeral, friends got the chance to take away one of Pete’s beautiful tail feathers that had naturally been shed over the years and collected by Ade’s wife Rosie. So we had to have a peacock and he had to be called Pete. We have endeavoured to make a space that is welcoming, comforting, gentle and calm. We have a snug where families can spend time with their loved ones before the funeral happens and we care for your loved ones, right here on site. So you can rest assured that we will guide you through the process and personally care for your loved one on our premises.
No boxes to tick and no packages to choose from
We offer a bespoke service that isn’t bundled up into several packages to choose from. Bespoke doesn’t need to be expensive. Each element chosen will be added to create a truly unique farewell.
Pop in for a cuppa
If you are passing we would love to have a chat over a cup of coffee or tea. We might even share our posh biscuits with you! If you want to see what a modern, forward thinking female led, funeral directors looks like and chat about the many options available that you may never of heard of, please stop by! Love, Lucy & Dawn

Autumn Dangers for Dogs •
As the nights get darker and the days colder, one thing to consider is reflective strips on practical jackets and outerwear, if appropriate for your particular dog and where you walk.
•
Halloween can be a frightening time for dogs. Take care to watch how your dog reacts to members of the family suddenly acting and looking very different. Please think twice about dressing them up in fancy dress as they may not like it and can chew and swallow buttons or loose bits of material which can get stuck in airways or obstruct intestines requiring an emergency visit to the vet.
•
Fireworks Night is looming with its whizzes and bangs that usually go on for a lot longer than just one night. It is a little late for a desensitisation programme for anxious dogs but not too late to ask your vet or behaviourist for the best plan for your individual dog. This could include, calming aids, plug-ins, medications, and buying or building a den. Please also consider signing and sharing the 'Limit Sale & Use Of Fireworks' petition. https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/319891
•
Finally, with wetter weather increasing, be aware of signs of a lungworm infection which may include coughing, breathlessness, weight loss, reduced appetite and diarrhoea with more advanced cases causing spontaneous bleeding & fits. Obviously contact your local vet immediately if you spot any of these signs and to help prevent lungworm infection occurring ask your vet for details of preventative products. Bring toys and water bowls indoors at night as these can all be covered in snail and slug slime which carry this potentially fatal disease. STAY SAFE-YOU AND YOUR DOG

The next meeting was in the HQ a social distance and coronavirus safe game of conkers (using Broom handles and face masks) though to be better fun than virtual meetings. ! e r e h l l i t s e We’r After what seems like an eternity, we’re pleased to announce that we’re starting to meet again on Sunday mornings at 10.30am. We’ve had to organise things a bit differently - there are limits to what we can do, limits to the number of people who can attend, the need to maintain social distancing in the building, etc. Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to start our mid-week clubs (Toddlers, Treasure Seekers, and BiF) just yet. Sorry – we miss them too! When we can do so safely, we will let you know! Obviously, this is under constant review, so may need to change depending on current guidelines. GAP PROJECT – HORAM VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HPC would like to clarify that Horam Village Hall’s Management Committee are responsible for this project. Their plan is to create a footpath around the recreation ground. Comments made in a recent issue of the the Sussex Express and County Herald suggested that HPC were going to fund some of this project from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). HPC would like to point out that there has been no official consultation or discussions with them, so WE are unclear how this idea came about? There has been rumour and murmurs that is all. Until HPC receive a proper thought-out proposal there are no plans to fund this project in part or otherwise. Furthermore, other than the Play Park, Skate Park and the 3rd Age equipment there are no future funding plans in this part of the Village.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
One of the initial requirements of a Neighbourhood Plan is to show the characterisation of Horam Parish.(Horam/Vines Cross/Maynards Green/Marle Green/Burlow) It was clear from our survey that a lot of residents have families that have lived in the village for generations so to assist with this characterisation we would greatly appreciate any gems of information or photos of how the Parish used to be. If you are able to assist please could you contact the clerk on 01435 812151 or email clerk@ horam.com

The Parish Council office is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. Social distancing measures are in place and masks are required to be worn should you need to enter the office. Saving the moat at Michelham Priory - an update from Nus We are extremely lucky that East Sussex has such a rich history and boasts many great heritage sites. Wealden is home to many extraordinary medieval sights and has a unique history of hammer ponds, which were crucial to the Tudor and Stuart iron industry that was established within the High Weald. The jewel in the crown of Wealden’s medieval heritage is Michelham Priory, located in the beautiful countryside of Upper Dicker. It dates back to 13th century and is a Grade I listed building, which was home to evacuees and troops during WWII. It also has a historic watermill and forge. I visited Michelham Priory this summer and I was shocked to learn about the ongoing issues with water supply to the Priory’s moat – the longest continual medieval water-filled moat in Britain. I have serious concerns about the lack of maintenance of two water control structures which manage the water supply to the moat, by the Environment Agency (EA). This has led to gradual silt deposition, increasing growth of invasive aquatic plants, and made the historic watermill inoperable. During the Covid-19 crisis, a facility such as this mill is absolutely vital to prevent flour shortages. The moat has to be de-silted and water has to be returned to it immediately, or it will be lost forever. Last month, I raised the issue at an urgent debate in Parliament and demanded immediate interventions to ensure the future viability of this critical local gem. As a result, I have met with our area representatives from the EA to find a workable solution. I am pleased that they have committed to urgently review the issue and provide a tangible plan for solving the problem, and a long-term management strategy. Our heritage sites are vital to the local economy and the cultural fabric of the area. From your correspondence, I know how passionately residents across Wealden care about Michelham Priory. Many of you wrote to me about the volunteering you do to maintain the gardens, buildings and the mill. It was also touching to hear your fond memories of swimming and fishing on the moat, and even offering your diggers for de-silting. I greatly appreciate all your support and I look forward to working with the EA and meeting regularly to discuss the progress of this case. To let such a unique and culturally significant site disappear would be a devastating historical, social and economic loss for East Sussex. I am not going to let this happen on my watch. The pandemic has changed how we work and I am no longer able hold public surgeries. However, I continue to hold virtual meetings and casework is undertaken daily. If you are a Wealden resident and require my assistance, please email nusrat.ghani.mp@ parliament.uk. Nusrat Ghani, MP.

November Gardening Diary
The weather this month is rarely an incentive to work in the garden, but the abandonment of the garden to its own devices during the dark months is a great mistake as there is as always much to be done, right through winter.
Autumn digging will have been started by Battle of Britain Day with the digging in of compost, manure and we hope shoddy too. This digging-over should be carried on and completed this month, no need to break down the clods as rain and frost over the winter will render the diggings down to a good workable condition. In the established border deep digging will not be possible, but a light forking between the shrubs will help to aerate the soil, whilst digging in any compost, dung, leaves and annual weeds will increase the humus content of the soil. All good things. This month is a good time to plant roses, fruit trees and ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs. It is surprising how much root they will make by Christmas if planted whilst there is still some warmth left in the soil. Firm staking is essential with any new planting and should never be an afterthought; moving roots are fatal to the prospects of newly planted trees and shrubs. Autumn bonfires, surely one of the great joys of gardening; A still and clear November morning, a crackling bonfire, a thermos of sweet tea and a long pipe is all that we wretched sinners may reasonably ask for. Having established working or even friendly relations with our non asthmatic or bronchial neighbours we should not feel guilty at spending a whole morning leaning on our rakes musing at the flames and breathing in the evocative scents of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, particulates and the sundry other volatile organic compounds that make up that most comforting of autumn smells. Aside from the sheer idle enjoyment of it all, this is the only way to dispose of rose leaves with mildew or black spot, apple and pear leaves with scab, white fly on cabbage and Sprout leaves and blighted tomato and potato foliage. Putting such stuffs in the 'Green bin' may risk spreading disease around the county through the bags of compost thus sold on, likewise putting it on our own compost heaps ensures disease next year. We are told that composting creates Methane, a green house gas twenty times as effective as the Carbon dioxide released by a bonfire. The lawn may need some looking after at this time of year, we might to aid drainage and increase aeration by easing any compaction; A garden fork pushed in half way and jerked backwards will effectively loosen the top layers, the lawn should be worked over in this way every six to eight inches, this may seem an onerous job and as we may still be wheezy from our morning by the bonfire, may be delegated to any under-employed youths we may uncover about the house or indeed any child deemed capable of hard labour. The collecting up of leaves continues apace, it is important to keep the bulk of them off the grass, especially sycamore and the larger leaves, a yellowing lawn heading into winter is not the thing. Real afficionados of leaf mould will keep the mould of years constantly moving from one bin to the next and exclude Sycamore and other big shiny leaves, but however you make it, though low in nutrients, the resulting mixture is a good conditioner of the soil, very useful for us South Saxons plodding about in our Sussex clay.

November Gardening Diary
Pruning of apples and pears should begin this month. We have not room enough here to go into all the methods of pruning but for those of us who are worried by the obscurities of pruning lore, first identify your tree and refer to the literature before sallying forth, genned up and armed with the secateurs; bush trees are frequently overpruned which results in jungles of new growth the following year but very little fruit, much better to cut back individual branches, either those dead, diseased or crossing than to cut back all the branches. Plums and cherries should not be pruned during the winter months because of the risk of silver leaf infection. If the weather is too inclement for outdoors work we may without guilt retire to the shed to sharpen and grease the tools. The mower should have done its work for the year, we may aim to see it serviced, oiled and safely in winter quarters by the beginning of Advent, thus easing the burden on the gentlemen who service them, averting the grumbling in Spring when the hordes descend, trunks full of mowers for immediate servicing.
Quid Hortos Colit Local lady Rosamund Russell braves the shave!! You will have read in last month's issue that because Rosamund had been looked after so well by the wonderful Macmillan nurses, she wanted to raise funds for them, so other people can benefit from their amazing support. Last month she brought the shave forward for fear of lockdown shutting down her local hairdresser Cutting Edge. Julie at Cutting Edge started at the back of Rosamund's thick head of hair, in order for her to get used to it, before removing all traces of her hair and sending her off into the outside world, with her beanie hat at the ready! Well done Rosamund - you are indeed very brave. If you would like to donate to Rosamund's fundraising please use the link below: https://bravetheshave.macmillan.org.uk/shavers/rosamund-russell

COMMUNITY Young at Heart has reopened! Very different to how we usually operate - full PPE, social distancing, no children but we are together. This "lockdown" period has meant those who were suffering already through loneliness have been affected even more - we are happy to be a shoulder or a distraction. Craft has resumed on a Tuesday and music with the wonderful Angela Brooks on a Thursday along with a quick bake and bingo. Plenty of delicious food cooked by the amazing Claire - and home baked cake to take home - no one goes home hungry! We had Laura Russell visit us from Trug and Trowel - she makes really lovely dried flower wreaths and demonstrated to our members who consequently made their own. Thrilled to be able to support and showcase local talent. Bernard supports our music sessions with his piano accordion and harmonica - both a real skill and instruments you don't see being played much any more. We are extremely lucky. Please contact Rachel on 07971 032667 if you have a family member or neighbour who you feel would benefit - we would love to meet them! Kindly sponsored by Wealden Funeral Services.

The GAP at the REC – Get Active Pathway We have just finished a public consultation to install an all-weather, 1 km long, 2.5m wide pathway around the Recreation Ground to enable residents and visitors to walk, cycle, jog, scoot, wheel buggies or ride mobility scooters around the perimeter to enjoy the outdoors and exercise. We are also considering the provision of a pump track which is a course for honing skills on cycles, balance bikes, scooters and skateboards. We are delighted with the survey results, a total of 478 responses were received via the paper survey and Facebook poll. * 212 (96.8%) of paper survey respondents, are in favour of installing a pathway around the recreation ground. * 249 (95.5%) people said on a Facebook poll that they were in favour of the Pathway around the recreation ground. * 206 (94%) of paper survey respondents, are in favour of installing a pump track at the recreation ground. The overall consultation findings show very high support for the two new facilities. This is backed up by the many comments and suggestions. These are wide ranging, and linked to current relevant issues in Horam, such as the increase in housing and population, access to the ground, and the desire for more trees at the recreation ground. "Hope it happens as looks lovely. Good initiative. Lovely for kids and go for a walk" "The pathway is a wonderful idea for people like myself with mobility issues" "Another great asset for the community to meet and share whilst being more active physically" "Good to have somewhere to walk in any weather away from traffic" "Given current situation, facilities like this should be implemented for people who are socially isolated" "Great opportunity, allow more people to use recreation ground. Open up area to disabled users" "Improve mental health for children (pump track)" "Supportive of all efforts to increase health, wellbeing and fitness of our local community and feel this would be of benefit, fully support the proposals" “The pump track is a great idea as it can be used by so many age groups for various skills and building confidence” “This is a great idea – fully in favour. We need a safe place for small kids to ride bikes and scoots” We are now applying for planning permission so we can apply to the many different sources of funding we have identified. If you would like to get touch with regard to the project please email horamvillagehall@gmail.com Horam Village Hall and Recreation Ground Management Committee

** Sunday 8th November: Sadly, the impossibility of adhering to social-distancing provisions means that this annual Remembrance Sunday service, which normally takes place at the War Memorial outside the church, cannot be held this year. There will be a brief ceremony for a small group representing the uniformed youth brigades and the Parish Officials, but this will be a private gathering. Please note that due to Covid-19 restrictions, facemasks are to be worn at these services, handcleansing will be available, and social-distancing is to be observed. These latter provisions mean that capacity is limited to approximately 30 people at the service, but with unlimited capacity to join us from your homes, live by Zoom, as an alternative. If you would like to join us, physically or by Zoom, please make contact with the Vicar to reserve your place by Friday lunchtime of the week you intend to come, or to find out the details of joining us on Zoom.

Heathfield Funeral Services As one of the longest-established businesses in our community The Waterhouse Family, now in the 4th generation, have been providing professional, caring funeral services for almost 100 years. Operating two branches, Heathfield Funeral Service in Heathfield and C Waterhouse & Sons in Burwash, we remain an independent, family-owned business that is proud to combine traditional values with a modern approach. The personal touch is central to our work and there is someone to help 24 hours a day, every day of the year. All calls are answered personally by a member of the family or their local team – not a call centre. No funeral is the same. Each one is organised with sensitivity and awareness of each families’ individual needs and preferences. You can be sure of a sympathetic and professional service that will help ease what can be a stressful time. In particular at the moment, the team can guide you through the changes to funeral arrangements under the current Covid restrictions. Options include a traditional service, with appropriate numbers attending; or a direct to cremator service with the opportunity to take a moment of reflection with the hearse if desired. The details of arranging a funeral are important, from choosing a suitable coffin which reflects each families’ wishes to personalising the service with bespoke service sheets. We have transparent pricing for all services and facilities and an estimate of the cost of the funeral is provided once the arrangements have been discussed. Full details and services that we offer can be viewed on our business website at www.heathfieldfunerals.co.uk. To discuss your needs on the telephone, please contact Wendy Mitchell who will be able to deal with any enquiries.

Local Development Update Wealden District Council recently published sites offered by land owners for potential housing development, following a call for sites from them earlier this year. If you look at the map to the right it shows in yellow the sites offered since January 2019 and the green offered up before that date, (which please note is only a little darker than the woodland green). Wealden are now thinking about their new plan and the rules may well not be the same as last time. Therefore, some of the green sites deemed unacceptable in 2019 may on reassessment, be deemed acceptable, and vice-versa. The new orange area for Horam equates to 46.65 hectares – HOWEVER not all these sites will be suitable for development, and it is also important to remember that an entire site is not always suitable and can only be partially developed. We have to accept that Horam will continue to be a contender for possible development, falling within the South Weald and having amenities - a high street with shops. However there is still the issue of lack of infrastructure and land for it, if all available suitable sites are developed into housing, that leaves no land available for schools, healthcare etc which will be needed as the local population swells.
Existing site update Rosemead Farm
The build out continues with landscaping and tree planting on site. Sadly, still no trees planted along the Eastern & Northern boundaries of the site, despite it being stipulated clearly in the application approval documents dated 30/04/2018 under para 5 it mentions the condition regarding landscape buffering requiring compliance in the first planting season. There is no obvious application seeking to defer this and Bovis have yet to offer an explanation for the delay, despite the Editor asking on several occasions over the last 2 years. The Editor asked the site manager for an update on the situation and he advised that planting and trees are on order and he has requested an early November start. The planting is intended to shield neighbours from seeing the estate and protect the views of walkers using the popular footpath that crosses the field (Cauldavon) on the Eastern boundary. The delay in planting these boundaries has done neither and two years of growth have been lost. The developer can theoretically be served by Wealden District Council with an Enforcement Order which may result in a fine.
Horebeech Lane Cuckoo trail bridge
There are cracks appearing on the bridge and there has been an ongoing issue with the drain outside of The Hall, which has led to flooding on a few occasions now on the north side of the bridge. Please note that the drain issues have NOT been caused by Bovis. The steps onto the Cuckoo Trail from the northern side of the bridge remain closed at the request of East Sussex Highways, the site manager of Rosemead is chasing for an update on whether these steps will be removed/shut off but have been asked to keep fencing up for the time being
Cauldavon
Application withdrawn, but this does not mean it won’t come back. As explained previously in this column, there is a track record of ‘unpopular’ applications being withdrawn, resubmitted with minor changes,

Local Development Update previous objections ignored and approval by Wealden’s Planning Committees. An example of this is a hot topic at Wealden currently. A letter (shown bottom of opposite page) signed by several concerned councillors was sent on 19/10/20 to the Chief Executive & Leader of Wealden District Council concerning a site on Eridge Road in Crowborough. Despite months of requests for full disclosures, Wealden have only released a couple of documents. The letter explains the situation.
Southside (opp Rosemead)
This site lost at appeal earlier this year with the Government Inspector finding that it was unsustainable & unsuitable. Sadly, that does not mean it won’t come back. In the light of the new white paper on planning from central government, Wealden’s work on their new 5 year plan and the precedent set by Rosemead permission, this site may well be re-visited.
Four Seasons
The build out of this site just past recreation ground in Horam continues. Last month the Editor delivered to 15 occupied houses on site and was admiring the layout and quality of the build. Many houses are positioned so they face out toward the recreation ground and the site has a really nice feel to it. Rydon Homes site (A267 end of Chiddingly Rd). Build out continues. Coylet Farm ( Horebeech Lane) static mobile homes, build out continues. Hedgerows, Chiddingly Road. Permission for 53 houses, build not started yet, apparently delivering new homes in 2021. Once all these sites with permission are built out that will be an additional 272 homes in Horam.
Housing need
These figures were provided by Mark Bawden, Housing Development Project Officer at Wealden District Council at the end of September 2020. Bedrooms Required A B C D Grand Total 1 25 47 221 124 417 2 7 31 107 106 251 3 3 30 74 33 140 4 2 9 14 2 27 5 2 2 Grand Total 37 117 418 265 837 This need is for the entirety of Wealden, you can see that the highest demand is for 1 & 2 bedroom houses. Are these being built? Developers tend to favour the 4-5 bed executive style homes and the 35% affordable (on sites of 11+ dwellings) are often not built due to developer unseen costs, or built but too costly for housing associations to buy (Merrydown) so end up in private sale/rental market. Developers continue to plan homes which are not the kind of housing we need in Wealden. In South Wealden, assessed housing need states (as detailed above) that the area ideally requires about 80% 1 and 2 bedroom properties to balance the housing stock, whilst developers ignore this genuine demand and submit plans for developments with 70-80% 3 and 4 bedroom homes.
