Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary December 2020

Doing funerals differently!

Dear Readers, Well we made it to the end of 2020! What a challenging year it has been for us. We hope that by the time you read this our lockdown has been lifted and we are able to go out and meet up with friends & family. This is after all what Christmas is about. Why not give yourself the day off leading up to Christmas and book a table at The Star Inn, Old Heathfield or The Brewers Arms in Vines Cross – their Christmas menu’s look absolutely delicious and you get to avoid the washing up! We know because of lock down that many of us will be behind on our Christmas gift shopping. Can we implore you this Christmas to support local businesses and avoid the big on-line retailers? We are blessed with many talented local artisans creating unique gifts and small, local businesses offering great services or experiences. These local businesses have been very much affected by lockdowns and lack of demand because of Covid 19. Please see P44 for our Local Christmas Gift guide and support local businesses. Why not take the kids to see the charity christmas lights on Little London road? See P10 for details. Because of the pandemic local churches will still be facing challenges and many may be planning to broadcast their key services by Zoom to give everyone the opportunity to feel involved. Christ Church & Horam Chapel will be broadcasting their services, including Christ Church’s very popular Christingle service and carol services from both. More details to follow – please see their ads in this month’s issue. If you have found yourself feeling lonely or low from the consequences of the pandemic, then you may want to check in with a Zoom service to get a taste of what local churches offer, without actually having to leave your home. Christmas is an important time for all of us, especially this year and for those like me (Lucy) who believe that it is a time for celebration as it marks the amazing birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the good news that this brought to the world. Jesus paid the price for our sins on the cross which means that anyone who trusts in Him has the free gift of grace and eternal life. Whether you believe or not, you may still enjoy the traditional festive services that local Christian churches offer, bringing our community together after a particularly difficult year. Thanks again to our readers for your continued support of the Diary, to our loyal & committed delivery team, and to our advertisers. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. Love wn xx Lucy & Da

A welcome change.

When Lucy & Dawn created White Feather Funerals, they wanted a break from tradition. They wanted a light, airy, welcoming space that no-one would feel intimidated to enter. Often funeral directors premises can be dark and dour and unwelcoming. Especially as so many display coffins or funeral accessories in their windows. Whilst at some point families may have to look at these items to make their own choices, White Feather believe that it is hard enough going into a funeral directors to arrange a loved ones funeral, without being immediately presented with funerary products that shout death. That's why they choose a light airy window display with brand ambassador Pete the Peacock, watching the world go by. Why not pop in for a cuppa and plan your own? Sometimes life surprises us, and we are placed in a position of trust to organise someone’s funeral after a tragic accident or an unanticipated short illness. The person left behind whose job it is to organise a fitting send off for you, has the unenvied task on their hands. We promise it isn’t morbid. Life is intrinsically linked to death, it is an inevitability we all face. So, be kind to your family & friends and jot down a few preferences in advance. You can do this on our website or book an appointment to come in to see us. You have nothing to lose and a sense of peace to gain. Love, Lucy & Dawn

Christmas and your dog Naturally we want to treat our pets as part of the family during the festivities, including giving them a taste of our own Christmas indulgences. Most owners in this country feed their pets the same diet throughout the year. The digestive system of our modern pets has adapted to this type of diet, so when they are suddenly faced with turkey and all the trimmings, gastroenteritis is often the result. “No laughing matter when you have a houseful of guests and your veterinary surgery is shut!” Even worse especially with an older dog, a fatty Christmas dinner could cause pancreatitis which is potentially fatal. Christmas is always a busy time, and with people, food and decorations everywhere sometimes our we leave things out that are dangerous for our dogs to investigate. A google search will give you a list of items that are poisonous to dogs. Christmas is of course, a time like no other and with crackers and noisy toys it can be frightening for our pets. Even the less sensitive ones can find it all a bit too much. Try to keep a good routine, and make sure your dog has a safe, quiet place to rest when he needs it. Always supervise dogs and children. So, remember this December... •

Carry on feeding your pet as normal. Find non edible ways of involving them in the fun. Toys, walks and attention are just as good.

•

Avoid giving any new food treats (even ones designed for pets) if they are unfamiliar.

•

Store food carefully. Beware of dogs helping themselves to uncovered food on surfaces and low tables.

•

Chocolate – contains a toxic ingredient called theobromine. Dark chocolate contains the highest level of this substance.

•

Raisins – in mince pies, Christmas pudding and fruit cake. These are very toxic and can cause kidney failure in some dogs. Not all dogs will be sensitive but unfortunately there is no way of knowing which will be affected.

•

The holly and the ivy. Both these festive plants, often used as decorations, can cause dogs to get ill if eaten. They can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Similarly, mistletoe and peanuts can make your dog poorly if they eat enough.

•

Pets are inquisitive, especially puppies, and will play with, chew or swallow batteries. Batteries can cause electrical or chemical burns inside the body.

•

Do supervise young curious puppies, at all times. It is not uncommon for them to chew through the Christmas tree lights and give themselves a shock.

•

Tinsel and ribbon are beautiful around the house at Christmas, but pets can find it an incredibly eye-catching toy. If eaten, these pretty decorations can cause gut impactions which can cause serious injury to your pet. HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND STAY SAFE.

If you would like to bid for one of our cream teas please email info@hwpc.org.uk with your bid. The two highest bids will each receive a cream tea for two. The current highest bids and the successful bids will be shown on our website www.hwpc.org.uk and on our facebook page. All monies received will be going to Cancer Research. JESUS was born into very humble circumstances. Yet the angels sang "Oh come let us adore Him" there was no room at the Inn, so He was born in a cattle shed and laid in a feeding trough. Shepherds welcomed Him, Wise men travelled thousands of miles to worship Him. For over three years JESUS preached the gospel And performed many miracles. He never wrote a book, He had nowhere to lay his head. His crucifixion was based on trumped up charges by evil men. Yet no other was good enough to pay the price for our sins. When JESUS died God blocked out the sun and darkness came over all the earth. Over two thousands years later, He is the central figure of human history. PLEASE make Christ the centre of your Christmas this year. Wishing our Fellowship friends a joyous Christmastime and a Blessed New Year.

The snow fell softly without a sound. Even the wind was quiet, Watching with awe, As tree and hedgerows, field and meadow, Slowly changed colour from black to white. The night was silent, More silent than that night Those thousand thousand years ago, When a star shone brightly Over a humble stable, proclaiming the birth of one, Who, too, would transform Black to white, And cover a world of darkness With His eternal light. December Gardening Diary ' When dark December glooms the day and takes our Autumn joys away' Sir Walter Scott. Well not a bit of it, these may be the sentiments of a gloomy Scot, mired in his Arctic gloom, but we take heart from the month in which the sun is reborn and, though the worst rigors of winter are still ahead of us, there is the promise of rebirth ahead. Whilst once this rebirth was celebrated in the Roman Saturnalia, it is now supplanted by Christmas and the birth of a redeemer. As in November, the weather this month is rarely an incentive to be out there upside down in a border, but a garden is a relentless tyrant, which may only be tamed when we take every chance to press on. The edges of lawns may have been eroded away or died back from being smothered by overgrowth from the borders, lying leaves, or the depredations of children. The easiest way to make the edges good is to roll a length of turf along the edge and cut around it with a sharp knife, then roll it up, the outlined shape may now be excavated to an inch depth, the base broken down to a tilth and the new turf rolled back into place, a board to stand on will help bed the turf down, expelling any air, there should be no air pockets, especially under the edges. New plantings should be checked from time to time as frost or wind may have loosened the roots and loose plantings rarely survive; we must always have our mallet about our person to firm up any loose stakes. Any brassicas in the vegetable plot should likewise be checked for firm footing; all brassicas greatly resent any looseness around their feet. Frost and gales in November will have seen to the last of the roses, thus we may reduce the top growth back a little and remove frosted flowers and hips, this will reduce wind resistance and present a more orderly appearance in the rose garden. This is not the main pruning, which may be done at the end of winter (Though many gardeners do this before Christmas) The harvesting of Brussels sprouts should be in full swing, starting from the bottom up and leaving the green tops until last. In the event of an 'Arctic blast ' being forecast, it may be worthwhile digging up some leeks and parsnips and heeling them into a trench so as to avoid having to harvest by hammer and bolster. Sometime between Alamein Day and the Ides of the month we may beg, borrow or otherwise purloin a number of twigs from some of the more forward of the trees and shrubs, including yellow flowering jasmine, willow, winter flowering viburnums, berberis, hawthorn, witch hazel and contorted hazel, these, when brought into a warm room and put in water should be in flower by Christmas, hinting at the rebirth and new life just around the corner. The No-mans' land behind the bonfire heap may supply teasels, whilst sea thistle and artichoke heads saved from last month will make for a fine Christmas display when spraypainted by the more responsible of the junior family members. The dried seed pods of Honesty make a fine sight shivering in a vase on the piano.

December Gardening Diary Whilst the keen gardener will have been digging over the soil since Battle of Britain Day, it is not too late to keep up the digging when conditions allow. The more soil we can get exposed to the weather the better. Areas reserved for hardy annuals should be dug over as well, but unless the soil is very poor there is no need to dig in compost or manure as annuals flower best on poorer soil.

Shop local this Christmas After a particulary challenging year, local businesses need your support to maximise activity in the weeks leading up to Christmas. For many, this is their only chance of survival. So please think carefully about sourcing gifts this Christmas from local traders, rather than the usual big, on-line brands. Why shop local? 1) By helping your local high street, you help your local economy. 2) Save jobs – and create even more. Growing the number of jobs locally makes where we live a better place to live & work. 3) Great deals. You may be surprised to see how competitive independent retailers can be. Independent retailers are more likely to reward regular customers. 4) Preserves the heart of the community. A thriving high street guarantees the potential of a village, encouraging people to socialise & shop locally. 5) Unique gifts. Lots of one-off, hand crafted items can be found from local, independent businesses, guaranteeing gifting from unique, not mass produced ranges. 6) You can buy from someone you know. Much more satisfying to know you are helping a local business person support their family, than help shareholders maximise their return on investment. 7) You can help the environment. Many local businesses source their good locally, which helps everyone to reduce their carbon footprint. Less unnecessary journeys & packaging mean less impact.

Local Development Update Development update December 2020 Wealden District Council are still working on their new Local Plan. They have now published the results of their ‘Call For Land’ You can find all the SHELLA Sites old and new at a very useful site called https://stopvinescorner.co.uk/shelaa-2020 Green sites are previously offered sites, yellow new sites offered since January 2019.

56

Local Development Update Please see the map opposite for the sites in Horam, which have been offered up to Wealden for potential development. WDC are currently working on a consultation called Direction of Travel as part of their new Local Plan, to look at travel & ecological impacts of developing the towns & villages across Wealden.

Flooding & development It won’t have escaped your notice that with the very wet weather there has been a considerable increase in flooding locally. Sites where no flooding occurred previously are becoming regular flood spots. The Cuckoo Trail bridge on Horebeech Lane, the bottom of the hill on Laundry Lane and the flooding outside Stream Cottages in Horam before the hill approaches Maynards Green have become an issue or previous flooding massively increased, with the banks of the river here being regularly breached. Sandbags are becoming an everyday sight locally. There is popular opinion that the increase in the amount of development locally is messing with the water table and this flooding is the result of that. There is no solid evidence currently, but this is surely another concern for local residents as the expansion of Horam continues unabated. If you are concerned about the impact of development on our village you can join one of these groups:

Useful groups & contacts • WASP (Wealden Alliance of Sensible Planning) https://www. wasp2020.org/ • SWOT (Save Wealden from Over Development) find them on Facebook, good community of residents, experts and collection of relevant experience & data. • Sign up to Horam Residents group mailing list – I only occasionally email so you won’t be deluged, email me your name & address to lucyleaflets@gmail.com • Sign up for Wealden’s Alerts – visit https://my.wealden.gov.uk/ but make sure you set your alerts for the longest distance from your address to ensure you get all the local planning applications emailed to you. This Christmas will be strange, but it needn’t be without hope... Without doubt, this year Christmas will be strange; definitely, the strangest in my lifetime. As I write, none of us is quite sure what to expect, what will and won’t be allowed. People are anxious and fearful. Cancellations and disappointments seem inevitable. This year, December feels bleaker and darker than ever.

But although Christmas will be strange this year, it needn’t be without hope. For right at the heart of the season is an incredible act of God in history that has given hope to humanity ever since. The Bible puts it like this (Isaiah 9:2): “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.” This light has been shining for the last 2000 years and every Christmas it is announced to the world once again. Perhaps this year, more than ever, we need the significance of what God has done for the world in Jesus to dawn afresh upon our lives. Why not use this Christmas to give the significance of Jesus a second thought? This year it is easier than ever, with all our services being live-streamed. Simply contact us or login to one of our services listed over the page and allow the light of God to shine into your life. We’d love you to join with us. In difficult times, we all look for hope. Don’t miss the opportunity this Christmas gives to discover the light and hope God has for you. We wish everyone in Horam and Vines Cross a safe and hope-full Christmas. PJ Guy, Vicar of Christ Church Horam Simon Cottingham, Elder, Horam Chapel
