Dear Readers,

A Note From Your Editor

Welcome to my first magazine for Heathfield, hopefully by now the sun is shining and the rain is long gone. Let me introduce myself, my name is Dawn and I am not new to publishing magazines, I have been publishing magazines for 12 years and I currently publish three, including the Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary. I have had several of my advertisers encouraging me to publish in Heathfield, so after putting out a Facebook post, where the response was overwhelming, it was clear that Heathfield was crying out for a community magazine, so here we have it the Heathfield Town Diary.

NEWS FROM NUS GHANI

I am sure that like me, you were deeply saddened to hear the news about His Majesty The King and The Princess of Wales’s recent cancer diagnosis. My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family, and I wish both His Majesty and Her Royal Highness a full and speedy recovery.

This sad news has brought into focus how impossible cancer is to avoid, how it can affect any of us, and how it is never far away. We all know someone who is impacted by this dreadful disease, and like many families across Wealden, my family too has been affected by cancer and its devastating consequences.

The impact of cancer on a young person is particularly heart-breaking. The diagnosis of childhood cancer is some of the worst news a parent can possibly receive, and as children often cannot advocate for themselves, we must do it for them. I continue supporting several local families that have been impacted by childhood cancer, including in Mayfield, Crowborough and Forest Row, and I have called for more awareness, genetic testing and more funding for research for childhood cancer.

However, there is some good news and thanks to ongoing breakthroughs in research, cancer survival in the UK has doubled in the last 50 years. Some cancers are prevented completely, and an early diagnosis really can change lives and outcomes.

During the pandemic, the country’s endeavour was used to tackle the virus and we must now remain committed to applying this same spirit to tackling cancer. I welcome the Government’s commitment to reducing waiting times for cancer care and multi-billion-pound investment to help deliver millions of additional checks, scans, and operations, and expand the number of surgical hubs across the country.

I am hugely grateful for the range of healthcare services provided in Wealden and across East Sussex, and I would like to strongly encourage anyone who is worried and may have symptoms to get them checked out. Please do make sure that you attend your screening appointment, and get the ball rolling early on treatment, if required.

Wealden Works is a charitable organisation that runs free employability courses, to 16–24-year-olds who are NEET (not in employment, education or training) and are living in the Wealden area, offering both work and life skills to those attending.

Wealden Works are there to support, provide guidance, networking opportunities and resources to help discover those hidden careers and employment opportunities to young people, whilst offering a unique 1:1 consultancy service to those just needing advice and guidance on career and employment opportunities and support with CV writing.

Choosing a career, apprenticeship, or further education course, (and in most cases also coping with mental well-being issues), is a challenging experience particularly for young people in rural areas. Our main aim is to provide professional career advice and personal guidance to create positive pathways for young people.

During the programme participants will receive a mix of both life and work skills, achieve accredited qualifications, employment opportunities, help producing professional CVs and introductions to local businesses understanding of personal budgeting and independent living, as well as various workshops, help to ensure they have the life skills to move forward with their lives.

The biggest challenge these young people face is not their determination to move forward but the barriers they face on their journey.

We are incredibly excited as we are just about to move into our new premises in Heathfield high street, these premises have been created to provide a safe, and inviting place for young people to be.

"A

JUNE GARDENING DIARY

dripping June brings all in tune"

Gardeners and farmers alike are hoping the proverb cited above comes to pass, as we have now had nearly two months with no appreciable rainfall. It will come of course, and the way our weather seems nowadays, it will probably mean twelve weeks' worth in a morning. And on the first morning of Wimbledon too probably.

June is one of the more pleasing months of the gardener's year; The blooms of spring may have faded but in their place is a wealth of summer blossom. By mid-month we may give in the urge to drive the mower over the old daffodil foliage, this two month stay of execution will have helped the bulbs build up for next winter. The season of the sucking and biting pests is in full swing so to allow for a good night's sleep, the diligent gardener must wage unceasing war on insect pests.

If aphides and caterpillars are allowed to multiply unchecked they will wreak havoc in the flower garden and amongst the vegetable and fruit crops. Straightforward washing-up liquid and water in a spray bottle will work for aphids and the collecting of caterpillars may be profitably delegated to the underemployed youths and children we may discover stooging about the house. It is at this time of year that the benefits of deep and thorough winter digging begin to show; Drought has nothing like the same effect on thoroughly prepared ground as it has on shallow soil hastily dug to the depth of a mere few inches.

Planting out of summer bedding will be carried on, room for growth should be allowed when planting, water until established.

Our minds may now be turning towards displays for next spring. Wallflowers, fox gloves, sweet william, forget-me-nots and canterbury bells may be sown now in finely prepared beds to give them as long as possible to grow before planting out in autumn.

Staking and tying and the feeding of plants that are actually in bud and bloom are other tasks which command our attention; A heavy June downpour will quickly lay any tall plants face down and spread-eagled across the lawn, always a chastening sight.

Be alert to suckers growing from the bases of roses, they usually have more thorn and leaf than an ordinary stem and should be removed on sight.

We may not be afeard to thin out crowded stems of such plants as Rudbeckia, Helianthus, Michaelmas Daisies, Phloxes and Solidagos. A few strong stems will make a far better display than overcrowded clumps.

No faded flower heads should be allowed to remain on Rhododendrons and Azaeleas, snapping them off above the foliage will free the new growth and the buds will thus be freed from restraint and begin at once to grow vigorously. Yellowing leaves on the aforesaid plants may indicate a liming of the soil which should be corrected with an acidifier. Any black bristly buds that won't open must be removed and burnt. Old Paeony flowers should also be removed, though one may wish to keep a few seed pods on the old types which make useful material for dried-flower displays at Christmas.

In the vegetable garden we may continue to remove all unwanted runners in the strawberry bed. Seeds of French and runner beans may still be sown, that deep trench of organic matter the reader dug in some months ago will pay back with a heavy crop. Lettuce, radishes and spinach can still be sown for succession. Maincrop Turnips and Swedes around the middle of the month. Plant Brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and Savoys as the ground becomes available.

Continue with the thinning of previously sown crops; overcrowding in the nursery bed will produce thin and straggling specimens which will never regain their figures.

JUNE GARDENING DIARY

Earth-up Potatoes little and often as growth proceeds.

We should cease cutting Asparagus around the middle of the month and give the bed some nourishment to encourage strong top growth of the stems still remaining. That hoe should be stirring the soil from time to time to break up any panned surfaces and keep the soil from drying out and baking hard. No Hoers' Elbow please. During the summer months plants in pots should be watered every day regardless of the weather and given a liquid feed once a week.

If we have kept up to speed with jobs through winter and spring we should soon have a thoroughly effulgent garden, one fit to make our neighbours green with envy, calling for just some minor daily pottering, so allowing us the time to enjoy long pipes in the sunshine, listening to the summer noises of bees buzzing at safe distance and on the wireless the happy sound of New Zealandish wickets a-falling.

Heathfield Farmers’ Market is held on the third Saturday morning of every month in the Co-op car park with FREE parking. The market runs from 9am to 12.30pm.

There is always a good number of stalls selling a wide selection of locally produced food, plants and crafts.

Trudi - Mothering Mojo

We’ve all heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” and, ironically, many of us reading this do live in lovely villages. But, when you have a baby, it can often feel isolating and lonely. Not to mention overwhelming and like you’ve been deskilled. Throw in some extra challenges like feeding issues, sleep deprivation and lack of family nearby and you have the recipe for a miserable postpartum.

You might suggest just ‘getting out’ and meeting other mums. And whilst this can be helpful, it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. And what about the house? It might be slowly unraveling and getting out might feel like you’ve just got to come back to it again.

Birth Doulas are fairly well known now, but less people know about Postnatal Doulas, although word is getting out and we are growing in popularity. In fact, from 2020 to 2022 we have seen a 50% increase in the number of families supported postnatally (2,463 in 2021 just from Doula UK doulas alone).

A postnatal doula is someone who is employed to ‘mother the mother’. It’s different from a nanny, maternity nurse, home help or health visitor. But a practical mix of all of those, and then some. We might do some light chores around the house, hold the baby whilst you sleep and prepare a dinner for when the rest of the family get home. Making sure the mother is rested, nurtured and supported.

Although anyone can claim to be a doula, A Doula UK doula will have excellent training and a thorough mentoring programme under their belts. Postnatal doulas often come with other skills. I am also an Infant Feeding Specialist (I volunteer at the NHS Crowborough Breastfeeding Café every Thursday), a Holistic Sleep Coach and Pelvic Floor rehabilitation yoga teacher.

A postnatal doula might also know about where to get further specialist support for particular issues like tongue tie, allergies, etc. She might know where the local baby massage, sing and sign, baby yoga and other groups are. She will possibly even run one of them herself.

I have been a doula, both birth and postnatal, for 17 years. I’ve also got three children of my own. So I’ve seen it all. There is nothing my client can tell me that will shock me, she can be her most authentic self with me and I will carry all of her emotions alongside her. We usually become great friends and share some really special moments together. But it’s also okay if I just empty her dishwasher, coo over baby and then be off to the next mum.

If you’re interested in employing a postnatal doula or gifting a postnatal doula to a new mum, please feel free to get in touch with me directly via trudi@motheringmojo.com or look for information on doulas at www.doula.org.uk

Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients, add the ricotta mixture and mix gradually until smooth. Add the chopped strawberries.
