Dear Readers, Happy New Year and welcome to 2020, we hope you had a great Christmas and fun at new year? Because of Christmas we had to go to print a week earlier, so there may be some stuff that has gone on nationally and locally that we aren’t mentioned in this issue. Google has provided some hilarious predictions for the year 2020: •

All roads will become tubes

•

We will have both telepathy and teleportation

•

Nobody will work & everyone will be rich

•

We will make it to Mars.

•

Everything will be made of steel

•

We would be able to vote on-line

The last one would have saved us from getting wet last month, wouldn’t it! Some thank yous are in order, firstly to Art & Tricia from All Dressed Up for their organisation of the Christmas Tree and the Horam Christmas Fun Evening and secondly to all the traders that took part. We would also like to thank Dave Sutton for the lights & sound for the performances, Maynards Green School choir, Diamond Dance, Heathfield Youth Drama Choir, Christ Church Choir and Wealden Brass Band – it was a bit damp and blustery (we expect nothing less!), but there was a good turn out and people enjoyed themselves. If you’ve gorged yourself on Quality Street or had far too many mince pies you might be interested in getting fit and healthy for the new year – we recommend the services of Weald Fit & Therapy who have an ad with us this month. But this got us thinking about how we are generally prepared to invest in our physical health, but overlook our emotional well being/mental health. Please see the interesting article in this issue about how we can improve our mental health. You may be looking for something that brings you happiness & contentment – see page 68 for local man Matt’s story about how he managed to lessen his anxiety and experience the joy in small things. Make a note of the date of Horam Village Hall’s open day on Saturday 25th – they are celebrating Village Halls Week 2020 by offering a FREE cream tea and refreshments – see their ad for more details. And finally, if you would like to have your voice heard about development in Horam, see P32 to find out how. Happy New Year

Suggestions for Canine New Year resolutions 1.

Get booked into a training class, or if you already attend one, try some new activity with your dog. There are a host of them to choose fromtrick training, scent work, cani-cross.

2.

Go on more adventures with your dog. Visit dog friendly places that you will both enjoy.

3.

Get more exercise with your dog, improving health for both of you.

4.

Learn more about canine body language. It will help you understand your dog, make training easier and crucially, help you to predict problems before they occur.

5.

Incorporate training in your everyday life. Just 5 minutes a day will soon mount up. Think what you could achieve!

6.

Learn more about canine nutrition and check your dog’s weight regularly. Visit www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk to ensure you are feeding your dog a balanced diet.

7.

Go on one new walk a month. Beaches are normally much more accessible in the winter months and the bonus is don’t take your dog home covered in mud! Take care though and make sure you know about the dangers. Particularly be aware of fat bergs and other things that greedy dogs might eat. Perhaps get booked into a good training class first to teach your dog a “leave it” command!

8.

Ensure your dog is happy to be groomed and handled all over. Your vet will thank you. If your dog doesn’t like their paws being touched, even just picking them up before a walk so that it becomes a predictor of something pleasant, will make a difference.

9.

Exercise your dog’s mind. Lots of ideas for this on the internet, but even hiding dry food and encouraging them to search is a start. Brain work is as tiring as a walk, and sniffing activities are very calming for your dog.

10. Finally remember why you wanted a dog in the first place. Is s/he enriching your life? If not, get help from a qualified trainer or behaviourist, don’t struggle alone. Let 2020 be the year you fix any problems you may have. SPECIAL OFFER: Send your behaviour or training questions to dogtraining@wheelgates.co.uk . If appropriate your question will be answered in the next edition of the diary. Plus, one problem will be chosen this spring for a free 1-2-1 consultation.

Menopause Matters... Finally, there is talk of the menopause, probably because as the world stands at the moment there are more women with the menopause than any other time in history. Here is a very brief piece about the menopause. In some circles this is still not spoken about, and definitely the symptons of menopause not discussed, other than jokes about hot flushes. Which if you are having them is not funny at all. The menopause, what do you know about it? What would you like to know? Here are a few facts that you may or may not know. Some this may be obvious and others shocking. The peri menopause generally naturally begins around the age of 40 with the actual menopause occurring around the age of 51, give or take a few years. This is does not include those ladies which have had a hysterectomy or some cancer treatment. There is a lot of misinformation regarding HRT and it is certainly recommended that you do not believe scare mongering newspaper headlines. Undertake your own research. It is not for everyone but the evidence of what illnesses it does keep at bay are not worth ignoring and the symptoms it can control life changing for those suffering. Women in general are at a lower risk of coronary heart disease, however, after the menopause the risk increases to the same as men. 1 in 2 women suffer with a bone problem over 50 as opposed to men which is 1 in 5. It is important to keep social, eat well and stay physical. The need for physical exercise increase as it seems to take more work for the body to stay still let alone get fitter. Women with a BMI of over 36 will wet themselves, another reason to get fit. During the menopause the body carries fat around the belly in order to get estrogen. However this fat is toxic as it produces stress hormones called cortisol as well as inflammartory proteins known as cytokines. These force your body to produce more insulin, which increases your appetite and in turn increases the storage of fat in fat cells. This then causes one to put on more belly weight and also can set you up to develop insulin resistance, something that can cause heart disease and type 2 diabetes. So keeping fit and eating well is paramount to a good menopause and good health as we get older. Keep drinking alcohol to a minimum. It can act as a trigger, such as hot flushes, night sweats, it can make depression and your mood worse. On a pelvic health conference recently I learned that there are more female suicides around the age of 51-54. And more females give up their careers at this age also. There are many books available on this subject. However, information is moving fast menopause matters. co.uk is very informative independent website it also carries links to a world of good information. Don’t take my word for it, get informed and get fit.

Look after your Mind.................................... It’s like ground hog day. We over indulge at Christmas and then flock in our droves to gyms in January to repent for our gluttony. The average cost of a gym membership per year in the UK is £480. If you use the facilities regularly then £40 per month seems a small price to pay for taking care of your physical health, but let’s face it how many of us go regularly? So whilst we are not going to argue that exercise is bad for you and agree that it can have a surprisingly good affect on your mental health, does it not seem odd to you that it isn’t the norm to invest in our mental health too? You may have sat down early this month to jot down some new year resolutions after a particularly fractious Christmas & New Year. The media portray this time of year as the perfect time for families to get together and have fun, but let’s face it, some of us won’t be laughing after our festive breaks. So, if you feel like you are stuck in a rut with destructive behaviour, damaging relationships or increasing anxiety now is the time to do something about it and break the cycle that you are trapped in. In the UK we spend 50% less on our mental health compared to our physical health. Even more worrying, one in four of us don’t know where to start when it comes to improving our everyday mental health. When was the last time you actively invested in your own well being? Help yourself There are lots of options out there that you can explore and it’s worth trying a few things to find out what works best for YOU. There are plenty of DIY solutions like walking or running regularly (there are thousands of walking and running groups around the country). One in particular is definitely worth checking out RunTalkRun www.runtalkrun.com set up by local Horam girl Jessica Robson. Or meet at the clock tower in Heathfield High Street every Wednesday at 10am for a guided group walk around Heathfield including the Cuckoo Trail. You could look into online counselling, try meditating (loads of great apps on the market), start a gratitude diary to record the good (however little) things that happen to you everyday. Get a pet, or offer to walk someone elses’s dog, check you are getting enough sleep, take up wild swimming, join a church – the list goes on. Help from an expert If you find yourself with issues that require help from an expert, then there are many local therapists that are available to offer the right kind of support you need. You may have to try a few different kinds of therapy to find the right one that suits your needs. Don’t be disheartened if something doesn’t work, it just means you need to find another method that works for you. We are lucky to have lots of different specialists locally. We have asked a couple to contribute to this months’ Diary to illustrate the choice available. Reality Therapy Counselling Counselling often helps you gain a better understanding of your past and present conflicts, to recognise, appreciate and use your own resources, and to be able to consider new possibilities for dealing with difficult situations. This may involve clarifying choices and opportunities for bringing about positive change, or alternatively it may help you come to terms with those aspects of your life that you are unable - or do not wish to change.

20

................................................in 2020 Counselling can help you evaluate the thoughts and beliefs you may have that might be counter productive, or even destructive in your life. Reality Therapy is a method of counselling, that is highly focused, interactive and applicable to almost every area where counselling or psychotherapy is practiced. Additionally, the practical skills, ideas and approaches of Reality Therapy have also been successfully applied to many other areas, including teaching, coaching, mentoring, managing, supervising, relationships and self development (most notably in the areas of stress management, anger management and self esteem programmes). The core of Reality Therapy is the idea that regardless of what has 'happened' to us, what we may have done, or how our needs may have been unmet or violated in the past, to be happy and effective we must live and plan in the present. It enables people to clarify how they can best fulfil their needs; to evaluate their own behaviours and make more effective and need satisfying choices, both now and in the future and, importantly, without infringing the needs of others. Integral Eye Movement Therapy (IEMT) IEMT is a form of therapy that has had dramatic positive results for people with traumatic life experiences. If you have had a trauma in your past and feel you can not get over, or that it stops you from moving forward, IEMT could help. The method involves holding the problematic imagery in mind whilst the eyes are moved in different directions. The result of this is often that the imagery loses its emotional impact and becomes far less disturbing. IEMT can be used content free - so you do not necessarily have to discuss what the trauma was if you feel you cannot talk about it (as long as you are aware of what the trauma was yourself). Sessions can be specifically for IEMT or offered as part of standard counselling sessions. Content provided by Adrian Gorman. Further information on Reality Therapy can be found at Adrian’s website www. ctrt.co.uk Further Information on IEMT can be found at https://integraleyemovementtherapy.com/

Hypnotherapy techniques Is it the end of 2019 or a new beginning for 2020 As we approach a new decade is it time to reassess our priorities . There is so much uncertainty around – will we leave the EU at the end of January? will we have a majority or minority government – will our public services improve or remain much the same – will our economy improve or weaken – lots of questions to debate without clear answers? At the same time what about improving our psychological and emotional health so that we are prepared as much as possible for the new decade. Various techniques can be helpful to counter this stressful period in our lives including hypnotherapy Self Hypnosis and Neuro Linguistic and Self Hypnosis all of which can help to restore mental agility and greater emotional balance and self esteem. Hypnotherapy allows the unconscious mind to become more available to positive changes and to build greater inner resources and to change your thinking patterns Three tips; 1. 2. 3. 4.

Christ Church Fellowship meets on Tuesday 28th January at 2pm Our speaker is Dr Joanna Shawcross..... Freedom from torture. Meeting followed by a sumptuous tea. All welcome.

One of our main events for 2020, and a new one for us too is Benidorm or Bust which is a rally for old (cheap) cars. Two of our team have acquired a 1996 Mercedes C230 for £100 via a relative, who sadly passed away from prostate cancer. The aim of the rally is to drive from Dover to Benidorm over a five day period, a total of 1400 miles there and then 1400 back. There are several challenges on the way including scooter races, space hopper races etc. The team are Paul and Bradley a father son combo who are both Cuckoo for Cancer committee members plus Pauls other son DJ and his god-son Andy ( a mechanic – very handy). They are car number 62. The aim is to raise as much money as possible for Cancer Research UK. Target £5,000.00. All expenses for this rally are being met by Paul and his family, who as a family, have experienced Cancer first hand and via very close friends. They are looking to sell In Memory stickers (minimum donation £5) for those who have sadly passed away, are battling or have successfully battled Cancer. Write your own message and your sticker with its message will undertake the long journey. They are also looking for local businesses to sponsor them. Donation a minimum of £250 to have a panel of the car all to yourself with company logo etc. on. As Paul is using the car as his personal run about your company details will be seen all over Sussex and Kent for the next six months. Plus of course on the trip to Spain. Follow the teams progress up to the event and then during the five days of the rally via the Facebook page – Team Pad B Benidorm or Bust 2020. Via their Just giving page or by telephoning me Sue Mosey on 01435 813505. Help us to help others beat Cancer.

Horam Neighbourhood Plan The housing allocation for Horam has risen from 100 dwellings to 750+ In view of this increase Horam Parish Council, would like to develop a Neighbourhood Plan. (NP) When 'made' a neighbourhood plan becomes part of the local statutory development plan and must be taken into account by the local planning authority when making planning decisions. Neighbourhood planning gives local people a direct say in decisions that affect them. What a Neighbourhood Plan cannot do is stop growth. What a Neighbourhood Plan can do is: • • • • • •

Develop a shared vision for your neighbourhood. Guide type and design policies used to determine planning applications. Identify and protect local green space. Protection of the environment. Enhancement of biodiversity. Financially benefit the Parish by receiving 25% of developer contribution uncapped to spend locally. This is referred to as the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). Without a NP the Parish only receives 15% of developer contribution and that is capped at £100 per dwelling.

Constructing a Neighbourhood Plan Stage 1 • • • •

•

The first stage of the process is to have a Parish wide consultation that will be used to shape the policies for our local plan. The Initial consultation is by way of a Questionnaire that will be delivered to you with the February Parish Diary. it is critically important that we have a tremendous return of completed Questionnaires. We have to be able to demonstrate to external assessors that the plan is influenced by your feelings and opinions about the future of the Parish which will be provided by the responses to the Questionnaire. At the Parish Annual Meeting on 22nd April 2020 we will feedback and discuss the results of the Questionnaire and next steps.

The Neighbourhood Plan process will take more than a year to complete but if we don’t produce a Neighbourhood Plan, the future of where we live will continue to be decided elsewhere.

Sri Lanka – beaches, culture and wellness retreats…… Situated on the edge of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka enjoys year-round sunshine – between April and September the beaches on the East coast are best, perfect for family holidays; or get away from our long winters and head to the west coast between November and April. Endless golden beaches, no less than eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore, several national parks with an incredible variety of wild animals – including elephants, leopards, crocodiles and monkeys – alongside an impressive array of exotic birds. 'Blue' and 'Sperm' whales can be seen off the coastline, there are dolphin sightings at certain times and a variety of sea turtles also make an appearance throughout the year. As a bonus, in the centre of this delightful island, are the lush, central highlands where traditional tea plantations – some dating back to Colonial times – can be explored. Now that all the festivities are finished for another year and the decorations have been put away, it is the ideal time to plan a trip to this incredible destination with everything it has to offer. You could even treat yourself to a week of wellbeing before heading off to explore. We have the perfect recommendation, a 1926 Colonial planter’s bungalow, set in a 62-acre private tea and rubber estate, offering excellent accommodation, exceptional food and an extraordinary experience. You can explore the estate, visit the local tea factory or relax by the pool and take in the stunning views. Enjoy yoga and a variety of massage therapies in the most incredible of settings and be inspired by their chefs to cook some local delicacies! Tracy, from the Travel Concept took a trip there a few years ago and it is definitely on top of her revisit list! Sri Lanka, packs in a lot of experiences in a relatively small island and trying to do it justice in a word-restricted article would be impossible! However, if you are interested in finding out for yourself just how exciting your next holiday could be, call The Travel Concept and speak to the experts!

Divorce, Separation................................. Entering the New Year can be exciting, however, for many, this time of year can be a time of upheaval, change and sadness bought about by the end of a marriage. At Kay & Pascoe, we appreciate that you may not have done this before, but we have, so let us guide you through. Divorce If your marriage has irretrievably broken down there are 5 options, you can use to divorce your spouse and they are: 1.

5 years separation;

2.

2 years separate, where both parties consent;

3.

Desertion;

4.

Adultery; and

5.

Unreasonable behaviour;

1-3 are based on a period of separation, 4 & 5 are based on allegations of fault. Our priority at Kay & Pascoe is to work with you to find a realistic and practical ground that suits you, your spouse and most importantly your children. Finances At Kay & Pascoe, we truly believe that there are better ways to resolve the financial disputes than “having your day in court” including: 1.

Mediation;

2.

Collaborative approach;

3.

Round table negotiations; and

4.

Solicitor based on paper negotiations

Each process allows couples to put their children’s needs first and helps encourage creative outcomes, suiting each family’s individual requirements. It ensures that couples can keep the terms of any agreement private. Sitting face to face can be hard and is not always required, but it can also help couples maintain an amicable relationship. If all alternatives are exhausted and unsuccessful then Kay & Pascoe will advise you on whether arbitration or court proceedings are the most appropriate for you. We guide you step by step until you obtain a binding decision. Once a financial solution is reached, either through Court or using an alternative method of dispute resolution, this will be recorded in a “Financial Remedy Order” or “Consent Order”. Without an Order, the party’s financial claims against each other will remain open, even after divorce. This can mean that for some couples a financial claim is made many months or even years after the decree absolute was granted.

40

At Kay & Pascoe, we offer a comprehensive and thorough service. We will explain all the different procedures that are available and will advise you about the caselaw used to resolve the issues that arise in your case. As specialists, we have all the tools and connections to help you plan your future and find solutions.

East Sussex family lawyer calls on prospective candidates to commit to family justice Ahead of the General Election, a local family lawyer, and Chair of East Sussex Resolution, Sharon Kay, has called upon prospective parliamentary candidates (PPCs) in the East Sussex area to commit to supporting reforms to the family justice system, including the introduction of no-fault divorce. The call is part of a countrywide campaign by Resolution, the national family justice body, whose members work to help families to resolve their disputes constructively, keeping the best interests of any children at the forefront. After vital legislation on divorce reform and protection for victims of domestic abuse fell due to the General Election, Resolution, which represents 6,500 family justice professionals in England and Wales, Sharon Kay is calling on candidates to pledge to support their urgent re-introduction in the new Parliament. They are also calling for legal protection for unmarried couples, and funding for early legal advice, as part of their ‘Fairness for Families’ manifesto. As a member of Resolution, Sharon Kay from Kay & Pascoe LLP is trying to engage with local candidates to ensure a commitment that Sussex’s future MP will champion these long-overdue reforms.

January Gardening Diary " Better to see a mad dog than a hot sun in January." Many an ancient and sage countryman has, grumblingly, confided, in sotto voce that we will pay for the mild autumn by Valentine's Day, in which case we should take every chance now to push on with garden chores. There is much to be done before the great awakening when urgent tasks multiply and leave no

time for pulling up arrears. As we surface, like pit ponies, blinking and squinting into the new year we may find ourselves regretting that gross surfeit of lampreys we indulged in over Saturnalia and be casting about us for means of working off the corpulence and crapulence of the festive season. Might we start with mending the torn felt on the shed roof, or cleaning and disinfecting the green house or burning that pile of cuttings left over from the autumn pruning? Conditions allowing, we may be planting hedging plants, hardy climbers, deciduous shrubs, roses and the hardier perennials. As always we should be looking over recent plantings to see none have been loosened or lifted by frost. Towards the end of the month in sheltered spots we may be planting, always weather permitting, Jerusalem artichokes, Horse-radish, Rhubarb and Shallots. A heavily cropped vegetable garden will slowly increase in acidity over the years, the change may be almost imperceptible but by degrees the quality and quantity of crops, especially brassicas, will disappoint, we may dig in extra manures and fertilisers to boost the yield but these may only increase the acidity. The PH must be adjusted. Assuming the reader carried out autumn digging and manuring, now is the time to lime. It is important to keep manuring and liming at least three months apart as they are uneasy bedfellows. Liming will also help to improve soil condition and workability by causing the very fine particles to be found in clay to join together into larger clumps, the happily named process of flocculation. In common with one’s children, the showy dahlia is a 'gross feeder ' and will certainly repay preparation carried out now; Planting sites may be dug over and manure added as well as bone meal, this mix will fester down nicely in time for planting in late spring. The herbaceous border may have become over-crowded with older plants and may need some attention as to lifting and replanting. To save time later on, those plants to be moved or divided may be dug out now and put in a shady corner with some covering over the root balls. The bed may now be dug over and quantities of horse droppings, compost and bone meal dug in. This preparation will save much time later on and as with the sites for dahlias, the mix will then have time to settle and gain some structure before re-planting. Likewise herbs such as sage and thyme can get scruffy and worn out, these too can be divided up and replanted at the end of the month. As with the lawn-loving Breton in the Asterix books, an Englisher’s pride is his lawn. Having vigorously scattered the worms casts with the besom we may now apply topdressing at around four pounds a square yard, this may be gently and rhythmically spread back and forth with the back of a rake and a very calming job it is too. Cloches. We don't seem to see as many nowadays but they are essential for drying the soil and warming up the ground prior to sowing seed. By setting out cloches now we may gain ourselves a month's head-start with the crop and be in a position come Spring to be gloating over

January Gardening Diary our unseasonably early crops. If cloches were put out at the beginning of the month we may, after the Ides, presume to sow some onion, lettuce, radish, broad bean and round-seeded pea. Wood ashes from the wood burner will be greatly appreciated by the onions, important to store these in a dry place before use. Seed potatoes may be stood eye ends uppermost to start the chitting process. Faded flowers on Azaleas may be pinched off as one passes by. There are little jobs and big jobs to be seen to wherever we look. For those governed by the fourth humor, melancholia, or those by nature prone to ennui, work in the garden is the best possible remedy. There should be no time left for brooding or boredom.

Time to shift the............................................. Physical activity provides many health benefits. Here at Weald Fit and Therapy based in Heathfield and the surrounding area, we want you to reap the benefits that come with getting fitter and partaking in regular exercise. And don’t worry, it’s not all about “no pain, no gain” or tortuous high intensity classes. Did you know that the suggested amount of raised heart rate work in a week is 30 minutes, 5 days a week to improve your health? That doesn’t have to be in a gym, but could be walking, a sporting activity, or vigorous housework.

Science and Research

We have looked at several leading authorities to see what their experts are saying based on exhaustive research and scientific evidence.

A Healthy Lifestyle Can Help You Unwind

Bupa, the private healthcare company reports that regular exercise is an important ingredient of a healthy lifestyle. It not only helps you manage your weight but it also reduces your risk of developing diseases and it can help prevent and treat mental health problems. Your wellbeing and mood can be boosted and it’s a great way of unwinding from the stresses and strains of life. Also a soothing and calming body massage can help, which is another service we provide. Wow – that sounds pretty good for starters! Dr Laurence Heslop, Lead Physician at Bupa MSK Services says, “Sedentary lifestyles, jobs and long commutes have put us more at risk of the dangers of inactivity compared with previous generations. Exercising the previously stated 30 minutes 5 times a week will reduce these risks.”

Some of the benefits of regular exercise: • Keep Your Heart Healthy • Keep Your Muscles, Bones and Joints Strong • Reduce Your Chance of Diabetes • Control Your Body Fat Percentage • Reduce Your Risk of Some Cancers • Improve Your Mental Health and Wellbeing

Exercise is Good for the MInd

The Royal College of Psychiatrists says that the mind can’t function unless your body is working properly and to do this your body needs regular exercise. It’s true that most of us feel good when we are active.

Fighting Diabetes

Being active can help you lose weight or maintain a healthy weight says Diabetes UK. It also increases the amount of glucose used by the muscles for energy, so it may sometimes lower blood glucose (sugar) levels and help the body to use insulin more efficiently – regular activity can help reduce the amount of insulin you have to take.

Helping to Prevent Cancer

Cancer Research UK reports that being physically active isn’t just good for your heart as there is lots of evidence that it can also reduce the risk of developing breast, bowel or womb cancer. It goes on to state that keeping active could help to prevent around 3,400 cases of cancer every year in the UK. It seems that all the leading organisations have positive things to say about regular exercise including the Alzheimer’s Society, Mind, The British Heart Foundation, Macmillan Cancer Support and the National Health Service.

Why Not Start To Get Fitter Today?

Local people........................................ This month we are sharing the story of a mother & son from Horam, who have had their share of headlines over 2019. You may wonder why their names or faces sound and look familiar to you… you have probably seen them in the newspapers, on the TV news or programmes like This Morning. They have had a rollercoaster of a year and the Diary caught up with them to find out all about it.

The early years Luis was diagnosed at 3 weeks old with Cystic Fibrosis (CF), see diagram opposite. CF is a genetic disorder that affects mostly the lungs, but also the pancreas, liver, kidneys and digestive system. Long term issues include difficulty breathing and increased mucus in the lungs as a result of frequent infections. Luis was prescribed medication & treatment straight away and it was a battle to feed him as a baby. He has taken more anti-biotics in his 9 years, than most adults will have in their entire life. Luis currently needs over 20 tablets daily and has to use nebulisers 4 times a day, every day. Each time Luis gets a cold he risks a chest infection, and over time this leads to scarring in the lungs which affect their efficiency. He has been under the joint care of Eastbourne & Kings College London with a team Chris describes as ‘incredible’.

A solution comes to market When Luis was diagnosed the Consultant predicted that within 5 years a drug would be available that could make management of CF much easier. This came true with the introduction of a drug called Orkambi by US pharmaceutical company Vertex, in 2016. This was welcome news to Chris & Luis, because Luis had already spent time in hospital and missed much of his first year at school. However, Vertex was not willing to offer a price for the drug that the NHS could afford. And so the fight began.

The campaign begins Chris & other parents began campaigning to get an agreement between the company and the NHS. Time dragged on and still no deal was struck. Some patients with CF died waiting and those that didn’t, continued to endure more decline in their health.

Luis adds his voice to the campaign At age 7 Luis didn’t understand why he couldn’t get Orkambi and became so frustrated that he decided to write to the Prime Minister Teresa May to ask her to help. Another one thousand letters were sent to Teresa May from children with CF around the country, desperate for an intervention in the talks. An MP called Theresa Pearce read Luis’s letter at PMQ’s demanding that the government help to achieve a speedy resolution for these people. Months passed, talks continued but still no resolution in sight.

64

...........................Christina & Luis Walker The power of a letter Luis said to his mum, how would the head of Vertex feel if it were his son suffering from CF? So, he wrote another letter, this time to Vertex. Chris and other campaigners encouraged hundreds more people to write to them too. A petition was created and signed by 85,000 people worldwide pleading with the company to drop its price. During this time Chris & the other campaigners had several meetings with MP’s, Vertex, NHS, NICE – desperately trying to get the drug funded to stop anymore suffering.

Parents set up a buyers club Seemingly having exhausted all avenues Chris & some other parents set up the CF Buyers Club so they could at least import (at considerable cost) the non-branded drug from Argentina.

Who else could help? Chris then decided to appeal to the head of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn and wrote him a letter with an accompanying drawing from Luis, who by now was aged 9. They were invited to meet with the Labour leader at his party conference in Brighton. There they took the ‘Strawfie Challenge’ – which involves breathing through a straw while holding your nose for 1 minute, to gain an insight into the struggle to breathe CF sufferers face day in day out. The next day their plight was included in the conference speech. Jeremy Corbyn was struck by Luis’s determination and thought for others and liked his drawing – so much so that he asked him to design his official Christmas card for 2019!

Orkambi finally licensed in England On 24th October, a day before Chris was due to book a flight to Argentina to buy the non-branded drugs, Orkambi and another Vertex drug called Symkevi were finally granted funding by NHS England. This was the news Chris and thousands of other families were waiting for. At the time of going to press, Luis had an appointment scheduled at Kings College Hospital for 18th December to start treatment.

Not the end of the story However, there is a sting in this tale. The 3 years wait has allowed damage to Luis’s lungs which is irreversible. Vertex has just brought a new, much better CF drug to market called Trikafta which can be used to treat 90% of patients vs Orkambi which is only effective for 50%. The fear is for a repeat of the situation Chris and others have endured. Many families will have to campaign for this new drug to be licensed for use by the NHS. For more information on their fight you can visit: https://justtreatment.org/story/luis

What is a Christianity Explored course?

It’s a course that runs for 7 weeks, consisting of 90 mins of video & discussion a week (at a time that suits you) based on Mark’s Gospel from the Bible. It can be done in a small group or one to one.

What sort of person goes on a Christianity Explored course? You don’t have to tick a specific box to come on this free course. You can be someone who has never thought about whether there might be a higher power; an atheist; someone that has had a faith and lost it or someone following another religion. You won’t be brainwashed and it isn’t a prerequisite that you become a Christian, but an opportunity to work out where you might ‘fit in’ in the world.

Let’s ask someone local, who’s done the course, for his thoughts….

Matt is a 39 year old, married father of three who works in digital design. He did the course 3 years ago with PJ Guy at Christ Church, Horam.

Matt, why did you do Christianity Explored? I’d achieved all the things I had set out for in life. I had a beautiful wife, wonderful children and a successful business of my own, but worryingly – I still wasn’t content. I felt that something was missing and I couldn’t put my finger on what it was. I began to think that my dissatisfaction was a flaw in me, maybe I was just too hard to please or didn’t appreciate what I had got? This led to destructive behaviour that masked these feelings, I drank too much and partied too hard. I was running the risk of losing the family I loved. So, when my wife mentioned the course to me, I thought it might well be a magic cure for my drinking and behaving like a 19 year old. What did you enjoy about the course? It was great to learn about the things that I had made a lot of assumptions about (based on minimal knowledge)! It gave me time to sit and think about life and where I fitted into it, rather than rushing from one thing to another, trying to please everyone. What surprised you about the course? That PJ fitted the course around my schedule and I wasn’t expected to believe in Jesus

68

at the end of it. I learnt that no question was too much and I asked loads of them! I didn’t hold back, and as I got further in I tried to be receptive to different points of view – especially when I saw that fundamentally running my life ‘my way’ wasn’t making me happy. What didn’t you like about the course? Some of the things we discussed challenged my pre-conceptions, so that was a little unnerving. I was concerned that if I was going to buy into Christianity, I would actually have to change how I had been living my life. What happened at the end of the course? Well, I finished the course, full of enthusiasm thinking my life was going to change. But slowly I stepped away and went back to my old habits. But looking back, I feel like a seed was definitely planted, because a year on I finally acknowledged that I had a problem with alcohol, which I finally got help for. As the fog cleared I opened my mind up again to the relevance that Christianity might have for my life. I had witnessed my wife, who is a Christian, shouldering the burden that was me for so long, with such

FIND US ON FACEBOOK

patience and how her faith had helped her, that once again I thought that maybe it could help me. So, what was the thing that led you to believe that Christianity was something for you? After a period of recovery, I started to look back on what I had learnt and begin to see things from a Christian point of view. It became clear to me that if you lived the way Jesus teaches us to live in the gospels, though it is sometimes harder – it takes away the anxiety, the loneliness, the lack of contentment and the responsibility of being wholly responsible for my own destiny. Having a relationship with Jesus means that I can give over stuff to Him that I may have wrestled with for months, trying to work out how I could ‘fix it’. I have also come to have faith, that whatever the situation life throws at me, as long as I hand over my problems and be grateful for the things I have, the right thing happens – even if it is not necessarily the thing I wanted.

What would you say to someone who thinks they just don’t have the time in their busy life to give up 10 ½ hours of it for this course? The irony is that I thought I had such a busy life, that I definitely didn’t have time to spare to something so alien to me. But just that small commitment means I am now living a much happier life and am able to focus on what is important rather than all the other distractions the world throws at me (and all of us) on a daily basis. So, if this has sparked your curiosity and you would like to come on this FREE course starting in JANUARY at Christ Church Vicarage, (with refreshments!), where you have the opportunity to ask as many questions as you want with NO obligation to come away a Christian, then please contact: PJ Guy - pjguy316@btinternet.com or call 01435 813372 What do you have to lose?

Bridgeford’s Best Bites....................................Osteopathy Tips TENNIS ELBOW

A common musculoskeletal condition, known as lateral epicondylitis, causing pain on the outside of the elbow, near the joint. Although it is usually self-limiting, meaning it gets better without treatment, symptoms may last 6-24 months. Pain on the inside of the elbow, medial epicondylitis is less common and known as golfer's elbow.

Anatomy:

The elbow joint is surrounded by muscles that move the elbow, wrist and fingers. The tendons in the elbow join the bones and muscles together, and control the muscles of your forearm.

Symptoms:

Pain ranges from mild discomfort while using the elbow to severe pain even when the elbow is still. It can be felt on the outside of upper forearm, below the elbow bend and can travel down to the wrist, forearm and back of hand. Pain can be experienced when lifting, bending or extending the arm, twisting the forearm to open a jar or door handle or gripping small objects, like a pen or screwdriver.

Causes:

Strenuous overuse of the muscles and tendons, particularly those of the forearm which are used to straighten the wrist. Strain can cause tiny tears and inflammation where these attach near the bony lump at the outside of the elbow, called the lateral epicondyle. This can result from repetitive activities that twist the wrist such as racquet sports, throwing javelin or discus, decorating with a paintbrush or roller, using a screwdriver, garden shears or scissors, typing or playing the violin, etc.

Diagnosis:

If rest does not ease the pain, the doctor will check for swelling and tenderness and ask you to extend your fingers and flex your wrist with elbow extended; ultrasound or MRI scans are only used if nerve damage is a suspected cause of pain.

Treatment:

No single intervention proven the most efficient, some combination treatments give better results; more studies are needed. Physical Therapy/Osteopathy massage and manipulation to relieve pain, encourage blood flow, improve movement. Resistance exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles, reduce pain, improve grip strength. Strapping, taping, support bandage or splint to reduce pain, improve grip strength. Cyriax deep friction techniques and supervised exercise program both beneficial; conflicting studies regarding treatment of choice between these two and steroid injections. Acupuncture with needles and laser beneficial short term. Platelet rich injections using an extract of the person's own blood; not proven effective. Bone marrow injections using plasma rich in growth factors and mesenchymal stem cells; significant short to medium term improvement, further development needed. Corticosteroid injections into the joint may help reduce pain; long term effectiveness not proven. Medicinal leech therapy used where pain is major symptom. Leeches inject saliva with anti-inflammatory, thrombolytic, anti-coagulant and blood and lymph circulation enhancing properties into the tissues during blood withdrawal; specific analgesic substance in leech saliva not yet identified. Leech therapy pain relief is often rapid, effective and long-lasting. Drugs painkillers like paracetamol and anti-inflammatory (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, also available as topical cream or gel. Shock wave therapy through the skin may reduce pain, can cause minor bruising and skin reddening; more research needed. Non-surgical treatments not better in longer term. Surgery Arthroscopy may be recommended as a last resort, to remove the damaged part of the tendon.

Prevention:

Avoid straining elbow tendons and using the wrist and elbow more than the rest of the arm, include larger upper arm and shoulder muscles. Improve technique and strength for sports and activities than can cause tennis elbow; warm up and stretch beforehand. Use tools/rackets of appropriate weight for your strength and keep grip size bigger to avoid strain. We are happy to advise you on your health matters.
