Dear Readers, Welcome to what we hope will be Spring! After an incredibly miserable, sodden few months we approached Spring with some hope & trepidation only to be hit with the unprecedented chaos caused by the Covid 19 virus. So as Easter approaches we hope that the longer & sunnier days see off CoVid 19 and that no-one locally has been adversely affected by the virus. The illness has been impacting business, sporting & social events, we are hoping that by the time you are reading this we are back to normal, but we may be proved wrong. If when this issue hits your doormat, the over 70’s are definitely on lock down, then you may want to check in on your elderly neighbours or friends. A simple phone call (if you have their number), or a note through their door with your telephone number on should suffice. Remember to keep any receipts for shopping etc so they can settle up with you when their self isolation has finished. We would advise against sharing bank details with neighbours, unless you already have an established relationship, just as a precautionary measure. We would also encourage you to shop local with small businesses who rely much more on your trade than the big chains. Local people have formed groups to help those having to self isolate, please see P58 for contact details. Next month (CoVid 19 permitting) we will be celebrating VE day and this month’s issue features the story of a local chap, Ronald Parsons. The list for the National Toast to the Heroes has now been extended to include: veterans from the UK; Allied Forces and Commonwealth, child evacuees; anyone who contributed to the war effort including the Home Guard and emergency services. The organisers of the VE Day celebrations are on the look out for help setting up and clearing away on the day, for entertainers and anyone else who would like to be involved with this community event on Friday 8th May. To get involved please contact Trish at All Dressed Up in Horam, Dave Sutton or us at the Village Diary. Please note as of 19th March The Horam Fun Day is now cancelled. Please check in advance all events advertised in the Diary with the event organiser. We have to go to print around 2 weeks before the 1st of the month, so events advertised in this issue could be subject to postponement or cancellation, so please do check. And finally we always like to trumpet customer service that goes above & beyond, so we wanted to share with you our delight when we received a card and packet of wildflower seeds from Downwood Vets after Lucy’s son (aged 12) took his pet rat Valentine in, to be put to sleep. Valentine had a brain tumour and the vet could see how upset her owner was and dealt with the whole thing compassionately with much care and empathy. The card a few days later meant so much. Best wishes,

cy xx Dawn & Lu Joint Editors 2

Self isolation and your dog If you are stuck at home, with only the garden for your dog’s comfort breaks, there are a lot of games you can play in the house to alleviate your dog’s boredom. Games fall into two categories. Games dogs play by themselves, and interactive games that dogs that play with us. To avoid your dog developing attention seeking behaviours, interactive toys should be put away after playing and only bought out when you are intending to play with the dog. Toys can help keep your dog mentally stimulated, and physical occupied. Interactive games develop the bond between you and your dog. Kongs are one of the best toys for a dog to play with by themselves. They might be useful if you are feeling unwell. Trying to get food out of a Kong taps into the dog’s natural desire to chew. For many dogs having an outlet for this chewing behaviour can prevent problems developing. Use the original Kong, which is the strongest and safest. Pick some food your dog really likes and is safe for dogs, and push this into the Kong. Cheese is wonderful for this as it moulds to the shape of the toy and smells good to your dog. Next come bits that your dog will have to work at to get out. Ordinary dog biscuits are ideal because they get crunched up and then fall out of the hole straight into your dog’s mouth. Biscuits that come in different shapes are great because as the dog plays with the Kong he may suddenly get rewarded by a whole biscuit falling out as the Kong bounces along the ground. Some treats like fish have health benefits too. Wedge these in and stick them to the cheese at the bottom. Finally, bits of tasty treat that will fall out as soon as the dog touches the toy with his nose, to get the dog interested in the Kong.

Services for April & the foreseeable future: Please see also the letter written by PJ Guy, the Vicar of Horam:

In this unprecedented time and situation, with the Government’s advice on public gatherings, ALL normal activities (services, weekday groups, hall hire) at Christ Church have been cancelled already, and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Christ Church Horam Sunday services are cancelled, as are all meetings and groups using the church’s premises, in line with current advice. However, the church premises will be open for a few hours daily (12.00 to 19.00), should anyone wish to sit in quiet thought or prayer, whilst observing social-distancing recommendations. Together with other churches in the area, we will be offering support to any in need or adversity arising from the longer-term self-isolation recommendations; please do contact the Vicar if you need to speak with him. A Vicar’s Response to the Growing Crisis… The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted just how vulnerable we all are as individuals and as a human race. This is a worrying and disruptive time for so many. It’s no wonder our Prime Minister has spoken about the need to mobilise millions of people to help and support one another so that we get through this crisis. And that’s why communities like Horam need to rally together to provide the necessary support network needed to see us through the months of challenge ahead. How best can we do that? I don’t think that we can do better than follow the words of Jesus’ golden rule when he said: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you.” (Matthew 7:12) Four applications of this principle spring to mind in the current crisis: When we are vulnerable, we value those who protect. We can each play our part in protecting one another by taking our own responsibility seriously and take all the official precautions to stem the spread of the virus. When we are without, we value those who share. Let’s be careful not to give in to panic and selfishly stockpile food and resources. Let’s find out what others need, share what we have, and help those who self-isolate to get the supplies they need too. When we are in need, we value those who offer help. Some in our community will have no one they feel they can turn to for help. Who can we provide that help for? Let’s let them know now, so they know whom they can contact when the time comes. When we are lonely, we value those who offer friendship. Self-isolation will be tough, especially if this continues for months. Some will be in danger of loneliness, but we can help with regular contact by phone or social media. At times like this, friendship means the world. Who can we that friend to? As we all look out for one another I believe that God has given us ample resources to ensure we all get through this time together and our community will be strengthened. I know that for many, fear and anxiety at this time is real. The above care will certainly help alleviate some of those fears. But as the parish vicar, I would commend to you all the words of scripture which say, ‘Cast all your anxiety on God, because he cares for you’ (1 Peter 5:7). God wants us to turn to him in dependence and trust. He wants to give us his peace that transcends all understanding and to know the assurance of his love. Times of crisis can be times of spiritual growth and discovery. I don’t know where I would be without my relationship with Jesus Christ and if you don’t yet know him, I would urge you all to seek him at this time. I am available to talk with any who wish to speak through issues of faith and will be available to pray with people if requested. But more important than me praying for you, is to personally turn to the Lord yourselves. This can be done anywhere, but while the crisis continues the Christ Church building will be available as a place of prayer and quiet reflection between 12:00-19:00 each day. As a community, let’s look to the Lord together for his protection and for a swift end to this ordeal. And let’s seek to care for one another as we seek to navigate together the difficult months ahead. With love and prayers, PJ Vicar of Christ Church Horam

Local people in the spotlight: Davina Jones Knowing vs understanding The Diary sat down for a chat with the lovely Davina to find out what she is most looking forward to this Easter. Davina attends Christ Church on Horebeech Lane and is also very involved with their Jumping Beans toddler group. The church are very lucky to have her as she has a real talent for design and her ideas help the Jumping Beans team make Thursday mornings fun for mums & toddlers. Davina is a mum of 2 grown up boys and has a busy life. She is very approachable & friendly and always keen to help. We asked Davina a few questions about her background. Ed: Tell us a little bit about your background Davina. D: I grew up in a Christian household and gave my life to Jesus aged 11 whilst praying in my bedroom after church one day. I felt like He was there with me. However, hitting my teenage years running I somehow never really found the time or inclination to develop a personal relationship with him, God was quite literally put on the back burner whilst I pursued a typical teenage life of boys & clubbing. Ed: So how did you meet your husband Davina? D: I met Phil through a friend of a friend and we went out with one another for 8 years before getting married and having our eldest son. Ed: When did you find yourself wanting to dig a little deeper with God? D: In 2006 Phil was offered a job in Switzerland so we moved out there with two young boys (3 & 7) to start a new chapter in our lives. But I was very unhappy. I didn’t know anyone, I didn’t drive, missed my family back home. I was really struggling. I had had driving lessons back in the UK, so I went back home to sit my test and passed. I found myself with more time on my hands and I began to turn back to God. Ed: So what do you feel God has done for you in your life? D: Quite simply, he was there when I needed him. I hadn’t considered how unprepared I had been for life’s challenges. When we moved back to the UK from Switzerland both my boys were miserable and as a mum you want them to be happy. My faith really helped me during this time. Ed: Looking back over your life from when you gave your life to Jesus aged 11, how would you describe your relationship with God? D: I think I always knew He was there but only really turned to him in challenging situations – as many do! So I knew he was there, but I didn’t understand how he was relevant to me. But from my time in Switzerland up to present day, I have seen how a relationship with Him has changed me. Ed: How have you changed? D: I believe that God took me away from all my home comforts to Switzerland so that the feelings of loneliness made me turn to him. Since I have developed this relationship with Jesus I have become calmer, more patient & tolerant and have a much greater capacity to love. Now when I look back at the big challenges in my life I can see Him at work. In my late teens I was diagnosed with epilepsy. I was told I couldn’t have kids, wouldn’t be able drive or really live a truly independent life. My last gran mal seizure was when I was 20 and to this day I don’t take any medication for the condition. Ed: So, what is Easter like for a Christian with a close, personal relationship with Jesus? D: So, really knowing Jesus and understanding how he changed the lives of simple fishermen and all those who follow him, still amazes me. I am still so in awe of the fact that he gave himself as a sacrifice for me and anyone else who trusts in Him, and as bonkers as it sounds – he defeated death! So, this Easter I am very much looking forward to celebrating with my wonderful church family the incredible, undeserved grace of God.

During these uncertain times when some of our community are having to self isolate and some resources are scarce, we would encourage everyone to shop local. Your continued patronage could be the difference between the survival or failure of a small business. The bigger chains can take the hit and whilst their shareholders will suffer, we really do need to support our local, independent business owners. These people are our neighbours and part of our community. And the enviromnent will benefit too (as it has in China) from less trips in the car and more on foot, buying our provisions daily. Given that the vulnerable and elderly are self isolating, that just leaves the rest of us out on the streets. If we adhere to the hand washing and the social distancing we should all be fine. #shoplocal

Ronald Walter Parsons raised on Swansbrook Farm, Swansbrook Lane, was lucky to survive the war, as he served in the Royal Air Force as a Rear Air-Gunner in Lancaster Bombers and was awarded the D F C in September 1945. He died in 1986, just as he was about to retire as Manager of the wine shop which stood on the forecourt of the Merrydown Cider Company, where Merrydown Village is now established. Thank you to Jennifer Parsons for sharing her father’s story. Do you have a story about a friend or relative that contributed to the war effort? COMMUNITY

The colleagues at Horam Co-op would like to thank all their customers for their patience and understanding over the last few days. We are getting deliveries, but with a reduced range and quantity. As a result we are restricting the quantity of certain products customers can buy to ensure they go further. Please only buy what you need. From Saturday 21st March we will be prioritising elderly and vulnerable customers between 8am and 9am every day. From Sunday 22nd March, 3 colleagues with underlying health conditions will be self isolating for 12 weeks, which means there will be fewer of us available to work. We wish them well and ask that you continue to be patient with us. If we have the stock, we will get it on the shelves as soon as possible. Finally, I would ask you to look out for vulnerable neighbours and maybe pick up some shopping for them if they can’t get out. Sadly, we have no means of offering a delivery service ourselves. Thanks once again and stay safe.

April Gardening Diary

'Rain on Good Friday and Easter day, a good year for grass and a bad for hay.' Having survived the long gloom of Lent, gardeners will feel fitter from their abstentions and feel in good shape to get on in the garden, a good thing as April is a month of many tasks which will brook no delay. Growth is now so strong that it will soon be too late to prune or transplant many plants without risk of injury. Sown seeds should be checked and any that look doubtful should be re-sown now rather than delaying on the off-chance of improvement. There is truth in the old saying 'One for the pigeon and one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow.' April is a good month for planting laurels, conifers, hollies and other evergreen shrubs and hedging plants. Any rose pruning should be finished off as soon as possible. Climbing roses may also have been tackled last month, the small side branches off the main stems cut back to two inches. Hybrid tea bush roses should be cut back to four or five outward facing buds. It will be worth feeding the roses now and later on in the summer to encourage the new displays. Spraying with a fungicide at fortnightly intervals until June will keep the leaves shiny and fresh. Evergreens such as laurel, cupressus, box and yew may also be pruned now as well as any overgrown ivy. Towards the end of the month we may plant dahlias, fairly deep to ensure the new shoots miss any late frosts. As forsythias finish flowering they should be pruned, cutting out the stems that have just flowered and leaving the young shoots which will give the best displays next year. Daffodils and other early flowering bulbs should be dead-headed and allowed to die down naturally. Many a tidy-minded gardener resents these untidy obstacles to our lawn mowers but the bulbs must be given time to build up reserves for next spring. Lawn mowing starts in earnest this month. We may begin by finding our plastic grass rakes and sweep up any twigs and debris we have been ignoring all winter, maybe even locating our besoms to scatter worm casts, as these, when flattened by the mower make admirable sites for germinating weed seeds. The reader, having remembered to have the mower serviced, sharpened and oiled last autumn will now be ready to do the first mowing of the season, though with growth kick-started by the long-awaited high pressure that came in with the Ides of March, many a gardener will have started mowing two weeks ago. The first cut taking off the top inch or so to tidy things up and as growth accelerates the blades may be lowered by degrees. Mowing being a job we could delegate to other family members we might take this opportunity at the beginning of the season to tutor any of those underemployed youths and adolescents we have uncovered about the house in the art of mowing the lawn without losing digits or even whole limbs. Nothing could lower the esteem further or be more ignominious to a man in future life than having to admit to his peers that he lost his big toe under the lawn mower. The vegetable garden: Potatoes, those who commune with the moon will know that root crops go in from the beginning of the waning gibbous to the new moon, April's full (Super)

April Gardening Diary

moon is on the 8th, thus we may set out our pre-chitted potato tubers from the 8th until the 23rd. The gentleman who discovers celebrity gossip magazines about the house may profitably use them as lining to the potato trenches, this material will expand and hold water, saving time with watering later in spring and summer. We may continue sowing lettuce, peas and radishes as well as brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broad beans and kale. Parsnips sown last month may be thinned, this is very important as overcrowding in the nursery will lead to thin straggly specimens which will never recover their figures. In the event of a frosty spell, that bale of straw we have been carrying about this last month may now be used to spread around the haulm of any new potatoes that are showing. Main crop carrots should be sown towards the end of the month. Leeks and onions may still be sown but without delay. Trenches for runner beans may now be dug. For a bumper crop we may dig in a foot and a half of compost or horsey stuff which will settle down in time for sowing or planting out later in May. Though runner beans are a relatively easy crop, they do give what they get. So as the sun strengthens and the multifarious cotyledons of weed tarnish the earth we must keep that hoe going in the beds and the borders, aside from offering capital exercise to our pectorals and pelvic floors, this frequent airing and stirring of the soil really is a great aid to growth and general well-being in the garden.

COMMUNITY

As always we’ve had a really busy month - we have had visits from Little Tinkers Nursery School, Dallington Primary School, Bricklehurst Manor School, Broad Oak Primary School - not forgetting the wonderful Angela with Cake and Wine Club Choir members. We’ve celebrated Valentines Day, Pancake Day, World Book Day. We have had a pottery demonstration and then all made pottery animals hosted by the brilliant Alex O’Reilly. We had a visit from Diane, a Pearly Queen from Cowbeech! We’ve also got a new screen up at the Club so are able to show members recordings of our highlights. On World Book Day we used it to show the story of “The Gruffalo” to Little Tinkers. Due to the current climate we have been forced to close our doors for now - but we’ll be back! Thank you so much for your continued support! Kindly sponsored by Axell Eames Funeral Directors.

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE We do not envy those working on the housing development sites in what has been the most disgustingly wet few months. The site manager at Rosemead commented recently that it was a really horrible, wet & windy site to work on.

Rosemead Site Manager Steve Bowen has advised that they are currently on schedule despite the gruesome weather. The rain however, has delayed the external communal landscaping of the completed areas. They advised that they have fixed the pond discharge onto Horebeech Lane with the assistance from East Sussex Highways. The bridge works are on schedule and hopefully by the time you read this the road will be open again and access will be available over the bridge. Please note from this point traffic coming from the village will have right of way. There are still 5 plots occupied & 7 plots reserved. Build has begun on the affordable housing from Optivo, 2 small blocks of flats have been started. The Diary has enquired about the tree planting to the Northern & Eastern boundaries of the site. This was part of the planning conditions and the Diary suggested that this is the time of the year to be planting trees. Residents feel strongly that the public footpath to the East should be shielded by trees from the development and equally the fields of Diamonds Farm to the north would benefit from the proposed planting. If trees aren’t planted soon (as per the conditions on planning approval), the window for this year will have been passed. The Diary has also been advised that the lighting of the street lights around the roundabout and entrance to Rosemead is imminent. As we went to press, the site manager also advised that the build may be affected by the Corona virus, only time will tell.

Traffic collection data on Horebeech Lane

For the last couple of weeks) co-incidentally when the road works were there and the road was closed for 2 weeks) there have been traffic counting monitors outside Christ Church. The Diary has asked the Parish Council, Parker Dann and Wealden District Council for information but to date have not discovered what they are related to. The site manager advised that the roundabout and road up to the bridge would be resurfaced starting Monday 23rd March, which should raise a collective sigh of relief from drivers regularly using this road.
