NEWS FROM CORNELIE USBORNE
New Council Leader
In accordance with the Alliance agreement, Cllr Rachel Millward (Deputy Leader of the Council from May 2023) became the Council’s Leader on May 15th, and Cllr James Partridge moved from being Leader to Deputy Leader. They will swap again in May next year. My best wishes go to both.
Horam station hub on the Cuckoo Trail
With help from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), Wealden Council will enhance the Cuckoo Trail: a new Horam Hub with new picnic tables; bike repair station, kiosk with toilets, enhanced entrance from High Street, heritage and visitor information; weekly free green gym sessions and health walks along the Trail.
PLEASE VOICE YOUR OPINION: Thu, 11 July, Horam Centre, either 10-2 or 18 -19.30.
Explore Wealden Wine trail
12 local vineyards, including Hidden Spring Vineyard in Horam, have joined forces with WDC to open a trail for the public this summer, for wine tastings and picnics, vineyard tours and nature trails. Also taking part are Tickerage Winery, Blackboys; Beacon Down Vineyard near Heathfield.
New grants for outdoor sports
The Council will spend part of their Community Infrastructure Fund on outdoor sport provision. Grants totalling £200,000 a year will be available for the next 3 years; applications start later this year. Sports eligible include cricket, football, rugby union, tennis, lawn bowls, hockey and netball.
False rumours
circulate that outside councils are buying social and affordable housing in Wealden. I have established to the best of my ability that there is no truth in these rumours. Wealden has 100% of nomination rights in such housing agreements and uses them fully. Moreover, a council buying housing in another area must notify that council. There are no such notifications.
You’ll find me at the Repair Café, Horam Village Hall, 13 July, 9.30-11am.
Cornelie Usborne, Green Party councillor for Horam & Punnetts Town, cllr.cornelie.usborne@wealden.gov.uk, 07979336401.

Seasonal Recipe of the Month
July
Each month we will have a seasonal recipe, if you have a recipe you would like to share email horamvillagediary@gmail.com. This month’s seasonal recipe is delicious Salmon En Croute.
METHOD
INGREDIENTS
1 onion olive oil
4 cloves of garlic
500g frozen spinach
1 x 320g sheet puff pastry
4 x 130g salmon fillets
2 large free-range eggs
1 heaped tb spoon red pesto
1 lemon
Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7. Peel and chop the onion and place in a pan on a medium heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Peel, slice and add the garlic. Grate in the lemon zest, cook for 10 minutes. Stir in the spinach, cover, and cook for 5 minutes, for the last 5 minutes remove the lid, or until all the liquid has gone. Roll out the pastry and place it on its paper on a baking tray. Spread the spinach on the pastry, place the salmon fillets on top, use the paper to fold in the pastry to encase the salmon, leaving it exposed on the top. Brush the exposed pastry with beaten eggs, bake at the bottom of the oven for 15 minutes. While that is cooking, beat the pesto and remaining egg together. Once 15 minutes of cooking is finished, pour the egg mixture over the salmon and gaps. Return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. Serve with lemon if desired, enjoy!

If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they’ll fly away. But if you spend your time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come to you. When you focus on improving yourself, everything you want will come to you. We attract based on who we are, not what we want.
As a Somatic Trauma informed Coach, I witness a lot to how the power of ones thoughts enables us to move through the curve balls in life and to find pockets of joy. Your mind is sometimes like a scratched vinyl record, the needle gets stuck. You keep playing the same thought pattern over and over and over. It’s not easy to lift the needle to reset your mind but knowing how to reset neural pathways and consciously stop the internal chatter and clear your mind is the breakthrough. One way is breathwork; Follow your breath moving in and out of your body. There are many different styles of breathwork that can help. Speak to yourself as if you were your best friend, with kindness and abundance. And as an unhealthy, sabotaging thought arises, replace it with a positive, supportive one.
Meditation is a great way to stop negative thought patterns and to change patterns of behaviour and create new habits. Meditation doesn’t have to be crossed legged, you don’t have to be sitting still and motionless. My meditation journey started with movement and a guided meditation during a fast paced walk in woods and across our beautiful fields in Horam and beyond, This helped me shift out of a freeze survival response and focus on me. Pausing is not something that society looks upon with affection or approval, more often than not we are praised for ‘being strong’ and ‘keeping going’ however this is one sure way to burn out and those feels will remain supressed.
The health benefits of meditation are impressive. Thousands of scientific studies have shown the benefits include stress reduction, better sleep, lower blood pressure, decreased depression and anxiety, improved cardiovascular function, and strengthened immunity. You’ll quickly discover meditating lifts your mood and enables you to feel increased happiness and peace.
With love and strength Michelle xxx

Trudi - Mothering Mojo
We’ve all heard the phrase “it takes a village to raise a child” and, ironically, many of us reading this do live in lovely villages. But, when you have a baby, it can often feel isolating and lonely. Not to mention overwhelming and like you’ve been deskilled. Throw in some extra challenges like feeding issues, sleep deprivation and lack of family nearby and you have the recipe for a miserable postpartum.
You might suggest just ‘getting out’ and meeting other mums. And whilst this can be helpful, it’s sometimes hard to know where to start. And what about the house? It might be slowly unraveling and getting out might feel like you’ve just got to come back to it again.
Birth Doulas are fairly well known now, but less people know about Postnatal Doulas, although word is getting out and we are growing in popularity. In fact, from 2020 to 2022 we have seen a 50% increase in the number of families supported postnatally (2,463 in 2021 just from Doula UK doulas alone).
A postnatal doula is someone who is employed to ‘mother the mother’. It’s different from a nanny, maternity nurse, home help or health visitor. But a practical mix of all of those, and then some. We might do some light chores around the house, hold the baby whilst you sleep and prepare a dinner for when the rest of the family get home. Making sure the mother is rested, nurtured and supported.
Although anyone can claim to be a doula, A Doula UK doula will have excellent training and a thorough mentoring programme under their belts. Postnatal doulas often come with other skills. I am also an Infant Feeding Specialist (I volunteer at the NHS Crowborough Breastfeeding Café every Thursday), a Holistic Sleep Coach and Pelvic Floor rehabilitation yoga teacher.
A postnatal doula might also know about where to get further specialist support for particular issues like tongue tie, allergies, etc. She might know where the local baby massage, sing and sign, baby yoga and other groups are. She will possibly even run one of them herself.
I have been a doula, both birth and postnatal, for 17 years. I’ve also got three children of my own. So I’ve seen it all. There is nothing my client can tell me that will shock me, she can be her most authentic self with me and I will carry all of her emotions alongside her. We usually become great friends and share some really special moments together. But it’s also okay if I just empty her dishwasher, coo over baby and then be off to the next mum.
If you’re interested in employing a postnatal doula or gifting a postnatal doula to a new mum, please feel free to get in touch with me directly via trudi@motheringmojo.com or look for information on doulas at www.doula.org.uk
JULY GARDENING DIARY
" St. Swithun's Day if ye do rain, for forty days it will remain. St. Swithun's Day if thou be fair, for forty days it'll rain no more."
St Swithun was a down-to-earth Anglo-Saxon bishop, venerated by all and especially by the common folk of England. He was constantly on the move; travelling to all corners of Saxon England on foot, giving alms and feasting the poor. Born during the reign of King Egbert and in his latter years tutoring the young Prince Alfred, he became one of England's best loved saints. In keeping with his love of the common folk he requested his mortal remains be interred beneath the pavement outside Winchester Cathedral: "Where it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and the drops of rain from on high". But in 971 his remains were brought inside the new cathedral to lie beside the Egg Kings of Wessex, during which process the outraged saint beseached God to cast down a tremendous deluge upon the workmen engaged in opening up his grave. The legend of the forty days of rain may have some scientific basis; the jet stream will often have settled into a static position around the 15th of July, (the saint's feast day); if it lies north of the British Isles we may count on a long period of continental high pressure, deflecting weather systems upon the heads of the Scots and ther sundry northern tribes, and if to the south, atlantic and northerly weather may prevail, giving a wet and dreary summer, though full of the life-giving rain that St Swithun so loved.
So, back down at ground level we are aware that the gardener's work is never done and even now, with the beds and borders in their full blaze of summer glory, a thought must be given to winter and to next season. Spring flowering bulbs should be lifted and such subjects as autumn flowering crocuses may be planted to give them a good chance to develop their flowers. Any branches on plum trees showing signs of silverleaf disease should be cut out at once and burned. This disease causes a metallic silvering of the leaf and can quickly spread around the whole tree. It is usually fatal.
Now is the time for thinning the apples. If the king fruit ( the one in the middle of the cluster ) has not already been removed and there are other fruits to take its place, then it is these king fruits that should go. Pears, plums and even dessert cherries will all repay careful thinning if there has been a heavy set.
In the vegetable garden the planting of brassicas should be pushed ahead as soon as ground becomes vacant. Continue to sow salads such as lettuce
and radish for succession. A last sowing of French beans for a late crop may be made. Runner and French beans should be fed as they begin to make pods. Onions and shallots may be lifted and dried once the foliage starts to wither. And a fine sight they make hanging from the rafters in the shed. Celery must be watered frequently or it will bolt and run to seed. If the reader kept a bag of soot from last autumn's chimney sweeping, as I'm sure we all did, a dusting of this makes an excellent deterrent to celery fly (one might try the local chimney sweep for supplies, I believe he advertises in this publication). Fruiting tomatoes should be fed regularly.
This is a good time to gather herbs for drying, tied up in small bundles they make handsome companions to the knots of onions in the shed.
Faded flower buds of delphiniums, lupins, and other early flowering perennials should be cut out before seed is set to encourage secondary growth. Roses too, should be regularly dead-headed. For autumn flowers of lupins and delphiniums, the plants should be cut down at the beginning of this month and watered with a liquid fertiliser. Cut grass makes an excellent mulch for carrot and spinach beds and around bush fruits, raspberries and sweet peas, lilies, dahlias, gladioli and other flowering plants, though not laid on too thick for fear of starving the soil of nitrogen.
As roses come to the end of their first flush of flowering, they can be fed with a high potash fertiliser to boost the second lot of flowers. Dead-heading of all faded blooms should be carried out at every opportunity.
Dahlias can be fed now but be careful to keep the feed well away from stems and leaves. Taller varieties should be securely staked.
Towards the end of the month we may start propagating shrubs. For lack of space I refer reader to the relevant literature for methods of propagation. Cuttings of forsythia, flowering currant, escallonia, weigela and deutzia and many other subjects will all root easily.
Whilst we may allow ourselves on occasion to sit back in the shed indulging in a long pipe and quiet ruminations over our onions and herbs so fragrantly drying above us in the rafters, with its soundtrack of cooing wood pigeons and on the wireless, the clatter of Australian and West Indian wickets a-falling, we must still occasionally gird ourselves to keep the hoe going as often as hoers' elbow will allow. All borders should receive a vigorous stirring from the Dutch hoe at least every seven days.
