Charcoal Burners Barn Horam Manor Farm East Sussex TN21 0JB

Dear Readers, After a very wet October, we are looking forward to a cold and crisp winter! Snuggling up in front of the fire in our pyjamas after a suitably filling & warm supper, maybe with a nice glass of red or a steaming hot chocolate? Only 7 weeks to Christmas too – don’t miss our Local Gift Guide, some great gift ideas from local businesses. In this month’s issue we have some interesting insights into the history of Rosemead Farm, this building site has hidden depths – in more ways than one. The build of the 123 houses presses on, with the show homes now open. There have been concerns raised about the safety of the new roundabout outside this development, Horam Parish Council and Horam residents have expressed their dismay at the position of the roundabout leading to some motorists continuing straight on, rather than around the roundabout. This poses considerable danger to houses opposite Rosemead, when residents are attempting to exit their drives. See Horam Parish Council update on P42 for more details. In addition to this, a horse was clipped by a car recently on the bridge. The horse was being led by it’s owner (also with her dog) across the bridge to access the Cuckoo Trail via the ramp. The driver didn’t want to wait and pushed by, injuring the horse on it’s rear flank. The driver pulled over ahead to inspect the damage to his car, but refused to give the horse owner any details. Although there were witnesses and his number plate was taken, the police have advised that no further action will be taken. Let us hope that the new pavement over the bridge will avoid this happening again. In other planning news, there is an application for the site at the May Garland for partial demolition of pub (south wing) and alterations to the carpark for 9 residential units. For more detail visit www.planning.wealden.gov. uk and search for WD/2019/1628/F. We hope some of you were able to enjoy the first bonfire night for 62 years (to the day!) from Heathfield & District Bonfire Society at the end of October? Please make a note of the Horam Village Christmas Fun Night on Thursday 5th December – including late night shopping, Santa’s grotto, Wealden Brass Band, carols, refreshments, treasure hunt, grand raffle and much more! We are still looking for help with one of our delivery rounds in Horam, if you can spare a couple of hours every month to help out – please do get in touch. Best regards,

How to Prevent your Dog from being Stolen Discovering your dog has been stolen and never knowing what happened to him has to be an owner’s worst nightmare. Dogs can be stolen for a number of reasons including breeding and ransom.

How can you keep your dog safe? • Over 50% of dogs are stolen from gardens. Make sure your garden is secure and no-one can enter without your knowledge. Don’t leave your dog unsupervised in the garden, keep an eye on him at all times – it only takes seconds to lift a dog over the fence. •

19% of dogs are taken from breaking into homes. If your dog is left at home, make sure your home security is good. Be aware if anyone has been watching your house and your movements.

•

16% of stolen dogs are taken from owners out walking their dogs. Vary the times you walk and the routes you take and beware of strangers asking you questions about your dog or trying to play him or her. Teach your dog to come back to you when called. Dogs running off can become vulnerable to thieves.

•

7% of dog thefts are dogs that have been tied up outside shops or other premises. They are an easy target for any opportunist thief.

How to Prevent your Dog from being Stolen •

Dogs left in locked cars are also an easy target even if you leave the car for just a few minutes. 5% of all stolen dogs are taken from vehicles.

•

Neutering your dog will reduce the risk of a dog being stolen for breeding purposes. Some people include this information on the dog tag.

•

Ensure your dog wears a collar and tag at all times, even in the house. This is a legal requirement in public places. Do not put your dog’s name on the tag because a friendly dog could easily be enticed away if its name is called.

•

Choose a dog walker, dog sitter or boarding kennels carefully. Ideally take recommendations from people you trust and do ask for and check any references.

•

50% of dogs stolen are puppies or young adults. Be extra vigilant if you have a pregnant bitch or a litter of puppies. Be especially careful if you have advertised the puppies for sale, thieves will stop at nothing to steal a whole litter to sell.

The history of Rosemead Farm Introduction

Archaeology South-East (ASE) was commissioned by Bovis Homes to undertake archaeological work on the development site to meet the terms of a planning condition imposed by Wealden District Council on the advice of East Sussex County Council. Initial work consisted of an examination of written sources, followed by a geophysical survey of the site. The results of both hinted that there was potential for the presence of archaeological deposits at the site, and the mechanical excavation of trial trenches in December 2018 proved that archaeological features did indeed survive. Full-scale excavations began in early March 2019 and continued until the middle of July. Although examination of the excavated material is ongoing, limited conclusions can be drawn at this stage, subject to revision after the specialist work is completed. It is clear that the site was linked to the local iron production, a hugely important industrial activity in the Weald from the Iron Age through until the early nineteenth century. There was also limited evidence of activity before the discovery of iron.

Prehistoric Activity

The earliest material recovered from the site consisted of a small assemblage of prehistoric flintwork, suggesting ‘hunter-gather’ activity in the general area. The recovery of worked flint from high ground overlooking a river valley fits comfortably into the known pattern of Mesolithic use of the Weald, dating from c.10, 000BC.

Roman Iron-Working

The first evidence of sustained activity at the site came from a ditched enclosure occupied during the first and second centuries AD. Pottery and waste material from a Roman iron-production furnace had been dumped in pits within the enclosure and in the enclosure ditch itself, but unfortunately the actual furnace (or furnaces) lay outside of the site.

Later Minepits

The vast majority of the archaeological features found at the site were minepits, deep shafts dug for the extraction of naturally-occurring iron ore from the underlying geological deposits. More than a thousand of these features were found, and those examined were as much as 5m in diameter and 4m in depth. The use of shaft minepits to extract iron ore is thought to date from the medieval and post-medieval periods; the Romans used larger quarries. Only a handful have previously been scientifically excavated, with only one positively dated (to the medieval period) on the basis of dendrochronology (tree-ring dating). However, it is thought that the workings at Horam relate to the extraction of ore for the Heathfield Furnace, a blast furnace built by the Fuller family in the 1690s, located less than 2km from the site. Clearly ore was dug locally for this furnace, as documentary sources show that an ‘iron miner’ named Richard Barton was attached to the furnace in 1741.

Future Work

Clearly the priority of the ongoing analysis will be dating the minepits. Unfortunately timbers discovered within them proved unsuitable for dendrochronology, but charcoal samples may prove suitable for radiocarbon dating. A full report will be produced in due course. Bridgeford’s Best Bites,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, WHIPLASH INJURY A sprain of the soft tissues of the neck, when they become stretched and damaged. It is common after a car accident when the neck is forcefully thrown forwards, backwards or sideways; the extreme flexion of the neck then whips back in the other direction. It can also occur from a blow to the head during sport or an assault. The cervical spine, or neck is designed to be flexible and is less protected than the rest of the spine leaving is more vulnerable to injury. Anatomy: The neck consists of 7 cervical vertebrae; the first 2, the atlas and axis are shaped differently from the remaining five and allow movement of the skull from side to side and backward and forward. Between each vertebrae is a disc and a nerve exiting from the spine. There are many complex muscles and ligaments in the neck to allow its movement and support. The anterior longitudinal ligament, running along the front of the spine is often injured during whiplash. Symptoms: Common symptoms include pain, tenderness, discomfort and stiffness in the neck area with limited mobility; swelling, muscle spasms, headaches, pain in the shoulders, arms, jaw and lower back. Less common symptoms include pins and needles, numbness or weakness in the arms and hands, tiredness, dizziness, insomnia, poor concentration, memory loss and irritability. Symptoms may become worse a few hours to a few days later. You will need to seek urgent medical attention if you have more severe symptoms such as blurred vision, nausea, ringing in the ears or difficulty breathing. Causes: Common causes include road traffic accidents and collisions, a blow to the head by a heavy object, during sports or an assault, a slip or fall where the head is jolted backwards, head-banging, a roller coaster ride and bungee jumping. The over-extension and recoil damages ligaments and tendons in the neck. You are more at risk if you are a woman because your neck muscles are often less developed, an athlete particularly in high risk sports, you have poor posture or congenital spinal problems; also if your car head restraints are badly fitted. Complications are more likely if you are over 65, have immediate pain after the injury, have nerve damage or numbness or are unable to walk or sit down. Diagnosis: You will need to see your doctor if you have pain and stiffness in the neck, numbness or tingling following a road traffic accident or impact to the head. The doctor with examine your neck for the range of movement, swelling, tenderness and damage to muscles, ligaments and discs, and may also test your reflexes. X-rays, MRI or a CT scan may be required to rule out more serious injuries, such as a fracture, spinal cord compression or nerve injury. Treatment: Self-help includes using ice packs to reduce pain and swelling, heat packs to soothe muscle pain, maintaining a good posture, especially at the computer, avoid sitting or lying down for long periods, sleeping on your front or using more than one pillow, a supportive pillow may be helpful. Whiplash is thought to

get better on its own in a few weeks or months or after some basic treatment; keeping your neck mobile and continuing with normal activities, specific exercises and stretches, taking paracetamol or ibuprofen painkillers or something stronger from your doctor if needed. You may be referred to a specialist or pain clinic if the pain persists for a long time. Osteopathic/Manual Management: Take a detailed case history to understand the nature of the problem and surrounding issues. Examine the neck, shoulders, arms, jaw and spine and all surrounding tissues; muscles, ligaments, nerves, fascia, etc., for movement, strength and functionality and assess nerve pathways. Consider the effect of the force of impact on the whole body. Perform orthopaedic and neurological tests. Treat to reduce muscle tension, nerve irritation and soft tissue pain. Advice regarding specific exercise and stretching the neck and shoulders. Treatment may include manipulation, deep soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques, fascial techniques, dry needling, etc. We are happy to advise you on your health matters .

TN21 Environmental Aware Horse Chestnut Tree Disease, Aesculus hippocastaum Huge chestnut trees are common in our parks and gardens and occasionally in woodland. It is thought called horse chestnut because it was commonly used as a horse medicine. The spikey round green fruit hang in groups on trees and split open in Autumn to reveal the brown conker inside. It is under threat from two invaders. The Leaf Miner Moth and a Bacterium. The Leaf Miner larvae damages the leaves with brown splotchy areas causing the leaves to drop off, leaving the tree vulnerable, but does not kill it. Bleeding Canker is a bacterial infection causing open lesions on the bark bleeding sap. This sadly will kill the tree. Our trees and woods face a challenging combination of pressure, climate change, pollution, attack from diseases and pests, urban development and introduction of non-native trees and plants. More than 1,000 irreplaceable ancient woods have been threatened by development over the last 10 years, and there is weak legislation protection for our precious woods. Dwindling grant funding is adding to the pressure. Tree pests and diseases are of particular concern and are sweeping through the countryside. At least 20 have been introduced and are attacking our native trees, 6 have reached epidemic levels. Ancient woodland and trees are some of our most valuable assets. They are irreplaceable and home to many threatened wildlife. HS2 rail link is the biggest threat to UK ancient woods at present. There should be no further loss of ancient woodland and trees. But not all doom and gloom. Restoration is the careful process of removing these threats, and enabling natural regeneration of native trees and plants, and helps wildlife to thrive. Around 40% of UK ancient woodland has been replanted with non-native trees causing deep shade across woodland floor. Restored ancient woodland is a rich diverse habitat that now covers just 2% of the UK much of what is left is being damaged, and once gone cannot be replaced, but through restoration damage can be stopped, which encourages these habitats to recover and reverse years of decline. “Observatree” is a tree health early warning system ensuring tree pests and diseases are spotted and reported quickly, so they can be eliminated or controlled. You can help support the Woodland Trust, they plant, protect and restore, with researchand evidence they influence government policy, become a member, or volunteer, school activities, support an appeal, give a donation or will giving. Free Trees for Schools and Communities Tree planting is vital with Climate Change to help UK hit zero carbon emission by 2050. Contact Woodland Trust. Tel. 03330 333 3300. woodland trust.org.uk

Canada – well a bit of it anyway! Canada is vast, in fact it’s the second-largest country in the World, so trying to decide what to do first would have been mind-boggling! We’d used the services of The Travel Concept on previous occasions, so we knew that a phone call to Bianca outlining our plans would simplify everything for us. As per usual, the girls were right on-point. After me changing my mind a few times and Bianca’s patience – added to the excursions that Tracy researched for us before we left – meant we had a tailor-made dream holiday waiting for us! Our 1,500km road trip across just a small part of this beautiful country did not disappoint. We flew into Toronto and spent three days discovering everything the city had to offer – including, of course, the CN Tower. The tower dominates the skyline across the city and even when you can’t see it it’s reflected in the many glass-fronted skyscrapers that make up ‘Down-town Toronto’. The city itself is bustling and cosmopolitan, where the second spoken language is Chinese (French being down as far as 12th on the list) and the diversity of restaurants, bars and eateries reflects this. One thing we did struggle with but got used to eventually is the fact that what you see on a price tag is not what you pay at the till, so we had to do lots of quick sums in our heads before buying anything! After picking up our hire car, our next stop: Niagara Falls! The iconic Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side of the river, to be precise. To stand that close to so much water cascading over a 50m drop is one of those life-defining moments that is hard to put into words. As Lake Erie pours into Lake Ontario the noise is deafening and the spray that fills the atmosphere covers everything leaving on-lookers soaking wet in a matter of seconds. Thanks to Tracy’s careful planning on our behalf within 24hrs we’d seen the Falls from a helicopter, been right up as close as you can get from the decks of the ‘Hornblower’ and explored the tunnels behind the cascading water. After so much excitement and the ‘kiss-me-quick meets Vegas’ atmosphere which surrounds the Falls themselves we were definitely ready for the more genteel sophistication of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Just a half hour drive from the Falls and steeped in heritage, its 19th Century architecture and surrounding vineyards meant we were able to spend a couple of days exploring butterfly sanctuaries and enjoying picturesque walks along the banks of Lake Ontario. Next we headed north to Collingwood in the Blue Mountains. We stayed at a purposebuilt ski resort which in Summer focuses on water sports, mountain biking and other sporting activities. We, however, enjoyed exploring the local town, laying by the pool soaking up a few rays and eating out in the village which is built around the lake. The quaint wooden buildings, which are reminiscent of a Western film set, give a rustic feel to the place – but I imagine that its Winter when this resort is at its best. The lake freezes over and is used for skating and the snow-covered lodges look like something from a fairytale whilst the snow-topped mountains which surround the resort offer some fantastic skiing opportunities for all ages and abilities. The remainder of our holiday was spent between family, exploring Kingston and Ottawa and resting up at a cottage just a couple of hours drive from the city. The countryside around the area is untouched and peaceful and our canoe trips across the lake at sunrise were only interrupted by the sound of our oars in the water and the Loons calling out to each other in the early morning. We fell in love with Canada but feel like we have only just scratched the surface of what this beautiful, hospitable country has to offer – we still have Montreal, Quebec, Vancouver and British Columbia and Banff to discover – definitely a destination to revisit! If you fancy a bespoke holiday in Canada, whether it be for Winter sports or a Summer break, call The Travel Concept – you won’t be disappointed! written by a Travel Concept client

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – November 2019 NEW ROUNDABOUT – HOREBEECH LANE Several complaints have been received about the new roundabout in Horebeech Lane serving the Bovis development. The Parish Council were only consultees to this application and objected most strongly to the proposal for a roundabout and the necessary lighting which comes with it. Unfortunately, the application was approved despite our objections. All the complaints have been referred to the Planning Department at Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council’s Highway Safety Section.

COMMUNITY

September kicked off with new members joining. It’s wonderful to witness the difference an outing makes to our members! We’ve had Bricklehurst Manor, Skippers Hill, Maynard’s Green and Broad Oak Schools join us in the afternoons and Little Tinkers Nursery School join us every Thursday afternoon. We’ve assisted with school topics such as “Poppy Day” and “1066”. Our Tuesday crafts have included soap and candle making - as always, every individual has their own design - the results have been outstanding! We managed to raise a staggering £317:59 in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief selling cakes we’d baked and decorated through Skippers Hill School and Little Tinkers Nursery School! Please contact Rachel 07971 032667 should you have a friend or relative who might be interested - it’s a free first session! Kindly sponsored by Axell Eames

November Gardening Diary If there's ice in November that will bear a duck, there'll be nothing after but sludge and muck." The weather this month is rarely an incentive to work in the garden, but the abandonment of the garden to its own devices during the dark months is a great mistake as there is as always much to be done, right through winter. Autumn digging will have been started by Battle of Britain Day with the digging in of compost, manure and we hope shoddy too. This digging-over should be carried on and completed this month, no need to break down the clods as rain and frost over the winter will render the diggings down to a good workable condition. In the established border deep digging will not be possible, but a light forking between the shrubs will help to aerate the soil, whilst digging in any compost, dung, leaves and annual weeds will increase the humus content of the soil. All good things. This month is a good time to plant roses, fruit trees and ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs. It is surprising how much root they will make by Christmas if planted whilst there is still some warmth left in the soil. Firm staking is essential with any new planting and should never be an afterthought; moving roots are fatal to the prospects of newly planted trees and shrubs. Autumn bonfires, surely one of the great joys of gardening; A still and clear November morning, a crackling bonfire, a thermos of sweet tea and a long pipe is all that we wretched sinners may reasonably ask for. Having established working or even friendly relations with our non asthmatic or bronchial neighbours we should not feel guilty at spending a whole morning leaning on our rakes musing at the flames and breathing in the evocative scents of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, particulates and the sundry other volatile organic compounds that make up that most comforting of autumn smells. Aside from the sheer idle enjoyment of it all, this is the only way to dispose of rose leaves with mildew or black spot, apple and pear leaves with scab, white fly on cabbage and Sprout leaves and blighted tomato and potato foliage. Putting such stuffs in the 'Green bin' may risk spreading disease around the county through the bags of compost thus sold on, likewise putting it on our own compost heaps ensures disease next year. We are told that composting creates Methane, a green house gas twenty times as effective as the Carbon dioxide released by a bonfire. The lawn may need some looking after at this time of year, we might to aid drainage and increase aeration by easing any compaction; A garden fork pushed in half way and jerked backwards will effectively loosen the top layers, the lawn should be worked over in this way every six to eight inches, this may seem an onerous job and as we may still be wheezy from our morning by the bonfire, may be delegated to any under-employed youths we may uncover about the house or indeed any child deemed capable of hard labour. The collecting up of leaves continues apace, it is important to keep the bulk of them off the grass, especially sycamore and the larger leaves, a yellowing lawn heading into

November Gardening Diary winter is not the thing. Real afficionados of leaf mould will keep the mould of years constantly moving from one bin to the next and exclude Sycamore and other big shiny leaves, but however you make it, though low in nutrients, the resulting mixture is a good conditioner of the soil, very useful for us South Saxons plodding about in our Sussex clay. Pruning of apples and pears should begin this month. We have not room enough here to go into all the methods of pruning but for those of us who are worried by the obscurities of pruning lore, first identify your tree and refer to the literature before sallying forth, genned up and armed with the secateurs; bush trees are frequently overpruned which results in jungles of new growth the following year but very little fruit, much better to cut back individual branches, either those dead, diseased or crossing than to cut back all the branches. Plums and cherries should not be pruned during the winter months because of the risk of silver leaf infection. If the weather is too inclement for outdoors work we may without guilt retire to the shed to sharpen and grease the tools. The mower should have done its work for the year, we may aim to see it serviced, oiled and safely in winter quarters by the beginning of Advent, thus easing the burden on the gentlemen who service them, averting the grumbling in Spring when the hordes descend, trunks full of mowers for immediate servicing.

Following a turbulent year full of Brexit and concerns about climate change, there appears to be a shift in priorities for the consumer. Our alarming rate of consumption and throwKe away mentality seems to have been impacted, with people e it l ping looking to reuse, upcycle & recycle goods. There is also evioc dence that consumers are preferring to put their money back al into their local economy by buying from local, small businesses, rather than the big retail brands behemoths of the likes of Amazon, Argos for example. The popularity of companies like Esty and Not on the High Street has given small businesses the opportunity to reach a wider audience of people looking to buy hand-made, unique gifts. This month our local gift guide provides you with a range of VERY local, small businesses to buy this years’ Christmas gifts from. Not only will you be limiting the miles travelled by the products and putting money back into the local economy, you will be buying unique gifts that show much thought about the person you are gifting to. Let’s keep it local. Ana’s Flowers Choose from a range of quirky candle holders & homeware from Ana @ Two Sisters Deli, or book onto her course to create a Christmas door wreath. See main ad on P65.
