Dear Readers,
Further to the apology I posted on Facebook on the 24th June, I would like to apologise again for any upset caused by my permitting in the publication in the July issue, a statement entitled `Potholes’ and `Would you vote for a communist Party?’ It contained a number of falsehoods and misleading statements.
Best wishes,
Dawn, Editor
I exercised poor judgement in allowing this article to be published. Please be assured this will not happen again. The diary is here as a positive source of information and news for the village and this will not be compromised again.

YOUNG AT HEART’S GREEN FINGERS PROJECT WITH FROGHEATH LANDSCAPES
Young At Heart is a non-residential, intergenerational community interest companyfor those who are retired, providing an active day outside the home with other likeminded adults. Based in Heathfield, the club provides a variety of activities integrating several local primary and nursery schools.
GREEN FINGERS PROJECT
With funding from Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council, Young At Heart launched The Green Fingers Project and chose Frogheath Landscapes’ Director Steve to organize the planting with their members and school pupils. Steve has visited their club house at Heathfield Cricket Club and various primary schools with planting pots, soil and seeds and other materials to get multiple generations into planting.
HELP FROM OTHER LOCAL BUSINESSES
Rapkyns Nursery kindly provided polytunnel space for the seeds to germinate which have already begun turning into super plants and wildflowers (seeds of which were kindly donated by Agrifactors). The plan is for them to be planted out around the club and in the grounds of the primary schools.
PLANTING FOR ALL AGES
Young At Heart are dedicated to supporting the elderly in our community and reducing loneliness. Not only is this project social, it is also mentally and physically stimulating. Feeling the soil in one’s fingers and using motor skills to fill pots and plant seeds helps with mobility. Introducing the younger generation to planting is Steve’s passion and he loves seeing the children proud to show off their work and learn from the older members.
GREEN FINGERS WILL BE BACK
Whilst the project is paused for the summer holidays, Frogheath Landscapes look forward to seeing the plants and flowers when activities resume in September.
For more information about Young At Heart or to get involved as a member or volunteer, please visit their website: www.youngatheart.me.uk
If you would like Steve to do a planting demonstration for a club or school close to your heart, please contact Frogheath Landscapes on info@frogheath.co.uk

Dear Mrs Trellis!
You obviously Haven’t a Clue!
Your notice in the July issue of the Village Diary about `Potholes’ showed thispotholes are the remit of the County, not District Council.
• It was libellous to insinuate that I was prioritised for pothole repairs in my lane.
• Ignorant: why would a Tory-controlled council favour a Green District Councillor?
• malicious to include misleading personal information.
• Finally, cowardly to hide behind a pseudonym, rather than owning up.
The second part of the page is complete nonsense and should simply be ignored.
This kind of offensive contribution has no place in a Village Diary. The editor was ill-advised to include this copy and has apologised. Sadly, this is not the first attack on me, and this incident, likely to be by the same perpetrator(s), has now also been reported to the authorities.
Cornelie Usborne, Green Party Councillor, Wealden District Council.

NEWS FROM CORNELIE USBORNE
PLANNING GOOD NEWS
In its July meeting PCS approved the latest application of Horeham Flat Farm, Chiddingly Road, subject to the omission of two plots (40 and 41) on the SE side of the site to protect the trees nearby. If not acceptable, it goes back to the committee.
Local Plan
The recent consultation on the draft Local Plan produced 1500 responders, 12,500 answers plus 130 longer “essays” covering multiple issues. This level of engagement is well above the average for similar processes in other councils. The responses are now being reviewed for the next phase of the local plan process. All comments are available by visiting https://consult.wealden.gov.uk/kpse/ event/2726CE98-03BA-4520-8558-361BAA45F784/peoplesubmissions
Local Government Association Peer Review
We have engaged with the Local Government Association who recently conducted a peer review. The report found that Wealden is well-run and performing well with a clear ambition to meet new challenges and ambitions. It made recommendations to improve communications across the organisation and with residents, work more closely with local organisations and residents to plan services and restructure the way we internally scrutinise plans and decisions. Members and staff are now working hard to act on the recommendations.
Lobbying government
Just before the elections the previous government required councils to produce a ‘productivity report’. We used this opportunity to flag-up what we need from government, including increased funding to reflect local needs, knowing what we have to spend three years in advance instead of only one year, as at present, increase investment in transport and force water companies to invest to stop sewage spills and water leakages, and ban no-fault evictions for people renting their housing.
There is no Repair Café during August. It will return on 14 September and I hope to see you then, Horam Village Hall, 9.30-10.30am. Cornelie Usborne, Green Party councillor for Horam & Punnetts Town, cllr.cornelie.usborne@wealden.gov.uk, 07979336401

HORAM PARISH NEWS
Horam Parish Council welcome Andrew Lee as the new co-opted councillor. He has plenty of experience in this role as a past councillor for Horam. All the vacancies have now been filled and 11 councillors are in place.
We hope residents enjoyed the Cuckoo Trail Exhibition at the Horam Centre on the 11th June which displayed all the exciting changes to the Cuckoo Trail platform in Horam. Cllr Cousins, Knight, Roberts and Billings were also present alongside officers from WDC.
Great news - The parish council have booked another Skate Jam for Friday 23rd August. The event will run from 10am-3pm at the Horam Skate Park and is open to all ages and abilities. There will be coaching sessions in the morning followed by a chance to showcase your skills at a fun competition with prizes in the afternoon. So please save the date!! Staff from the Horam Detached Youth Sessions will also be in situ to engage with the youngsters too.
We also hope some of the local children are enjoying the Horam Detached Youth Session on a Monday evening from 6pm-7pm which is open to children and young adults from the ages of 10 to 19 at the Horam recreation ground. Younger children are welcome if accompanied by an appropriate adult. The parish council continues to actively work with East Sussex County Council to find a permanent youth facility for the young people of Horam.
The bus shelter at Maynards Green will shortly be undergoing some repair work.
The parish council have agreed on the model of stair climber to be purchased for their offices but are still awaiting news on the success of their grant application to WDC which will help to pay for this piece of equipment.
Wealden District Council’s crematorium has been experiencing some antisocial behaviour in the form of young people driving quad bikes around the grounds – both on and off-road. The police have been informed and have been offering support in the form of extra patrols. Please report any incidents directly to Lisa Fiddimore, Crematorium Manager – 01323 443400.

NEWS FROM NUS GHANI
I am hugely grateful to the voters of Sussex Weald for their support and for returning me to Parliament. It truly is an honour to serve this wonderful area and represent the residents of Crowborough, Eridge, Rotherfield, Wadhurst, Mayfield and Five Ashes, Heathfield, Horam, Hailsham and all the villages in between.
Since first being elected as the Member of Parliament for Wealden in 2015, I have always endeavoured to do my best for all our communities, helping over 12,000 residents every year, and delivering some fantastic successes including securing over £3m for Beacon Academy in Crowborough and over £500,000 for Uplands Academy in Wadhurst; multi-million-pound accessibility improvements at Eridge and Crowborough train stations; £297,000 for a new Health and Community Centre in Mayfield; several grants for sports facilities in Hailsham; supporting the delivery of a new exercise pathway in Horam; and delivering over £65 million to support our businesses through Covid to protect local jobs.
I will build on this strong record of action and do as I always have done - continue being a strong local voice for Sussex Weald and work to improve our lives as well as those of our future generations.
The Conservative Party has suffered a grave defeat at the election, and we must learn our lessons from it. I wish the new Government every success in delivering for the country. But a Labour super majority has diminished our voice as they set to create new laws and policies on areas that impact our lives, our jobs, our green spaces and access to public services. My work to hold the Government to account in Westminster has already begun and I will do all in my power to ensure that Sussex Weald is protected and continues to prosper as a unique, rural constituency.
Politics should be about making a difference, not making a noise. Too much about politics today is, as Shakespeare wrote, ‘sound and fury, signifying nothing’. I will stand with those that tell the truth, address people’s real problems and face up to the challenges our country faces. I promise to work with utmost integrity, continue to fight for what matters to you, and to make things happen, regardless of how hard it is or even how unpopular. Thank you.
Nusrat Ghani Member of Parliament for Sussex Weald

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT
Horam’s Neighbourhood Plan now on homeward leg!
Before the Horam Neighbourhood Plan can be put to a local referendum for final approval, it has to go through an independent Examination. This process has now been completed and the Examiner, Mr Ashcroft, has concluded that, subject to some modifications, it meets the necessary conditions and can proceed to referendum.
This is really good news. It means that its policies – which have been developed lo cally specifically for the Parish - can become part of the legal planning framework. In essence, it will provide a much stronger local flavour in planning decisions.
The Examiner’s Report, as well as the submitted Neighbourhood Plan that he as sessed, can be viewed on the ‘Neighbourhood Planning’ page of Wealden District Council’s (WDC’s) website.
Of particular note, Mr Ashcroft:
agrees that, in general terms, the ‘Settlement Pattern and Landscape Charac ter’ policy takes a positive approach to the settlement pattern within the parish
agrees that the Waldron Ghyll Valley is a “valued landscape” - and he makes this more explicit in his modified wording
supports all the identified important local views and green spaces, with just a couple of exceptions. Understandably, he deletes those which applied to the field east of Rosemead, as that now has planning permission for housing, as well as a local green space designation of the open land in front of Discovery Way, as it would conflict with a current proposal for housing in WDC’s emerging Local Plan
regards the Design policy as an “excellent local response” to national policy
is essentially supportive of other polices, including those for housing mix, man aging flood risk, the village centre, biodiversity, and the Cuckoo Trail, albeit with some modifications, mostly to improve the Plan’s effectiveness.
The one disappointment is the exclusion of the ‘settlement gaps’ policy, although he appears sympathetic to the intent and considers that it may be reviewed when WDC’s Local Plan is adopted. He also usefully adds that the separation of settle ments may still be considered as part of the Local Plan’s formulation.
Next steps:
The Neighbourhood Plan now needs to be amended to take on board the Exam iner’s conclusions. WDC will then formally decide about putting it forward to referen dum.
This is likely to be in September, when local residents will have the final say (by a simple majority vote) on whether they want WDC to use the Horam Neighbourhood Plan in determining planning applications.

‘How we do anything, is how we do everything’; What do you feel when you read this quote? What emotions come up for you? So, how we are in our day to day lives has a significant impact on who we are. We are affected at a cellular level by everything that has ever happened to us, good, bad or indifferent. How we react to the said event is how we embody and move through on a day to day basis.
Let’s take the recent global pandemic as an example; The world stood still and evoked fear and panic in many, we are seeing a massive increase in autoimmune diseases, sick days from work and school, social anxiety is at an all time high and the UK mental health statistics report that more than 1 in 7 UK adults say their mental health is currently bad or the worst it’s ever been, the NHS shows an estimated 600 million patient interactions within the community, 1.7 million contacts every day. So we would be led to believe that it is all doom and gloom, and when we are hit with curve balls and adversity it is hard to get out of that dark place, but how we do anything is how we do everything right. As a somatic Trauma informed Coach I see daily the effects of ‘lifeing’ on my clients and how this event has taken control of their day to day life. As we work through the ways to shift trauma stored in the nervous system, it is beautiful to see those lightbulb moments of moving from feelings of anxiety, depression and stuckness to a place of post traumatic growth. Trauma, after all can not be scaled (in psychology they refer to big T’s and little T’s), what happened to you is unique to you and how your nervous system responds to an event is your journey which is why one size, healing does not fit all.
So, the question you might be asking is; How can one look after their well-being in this fast paced world, when you’re juggling so many balls and wearing so many hats. It feels impossible right ??? let’s flip that to I’m possible ( I love playing with the meaning of words as how we think and what we tell ourselves has the biggest impact on healing and feeling our best self). Is it easy to slow down – no, is it easy to heal – no. But what I do know from personal lived experience and as a Trauma informed Coach is that those light bulb moments on the healing journey are incredibly motivating to continue and understanding why we feel the way we do is the key to our whole wellbeing. Wellbeing therefore has to therefore encompass whole SELF (emotional, mental and physical experience).

AUGUST GARDENING DIARY
" If the 24th of August be fair and clear, then hope for a prosperous autumn that year."
The brilliant tints of summer tend to give way later in the month to the richer, though softer, golds and bronzes of autumn, highlighted with vivid colour from phloxes, gladioli, and hollyhocks. By removing spent flowers before seed pods have a chance to form, summer flowering subjects may be induced to keep blooming for a greatly extended period, and if the garden is to be left intended during holiday time, we may take this a step further by removing all flowers and buds on summer bedding to ensure they will not spend themselves in seed production before our return. The temporary relief thus afforded the plants will be reflected in a gay display on our return. We must not relax warfare against insect pests and diseases. Fungoid diseases can be troublesome at this season and as soon as noted due measures should be taken. Watch especially roses for black spot, rust and mildew, although once tarnished, leaves may not be to be improved by application of sprays, the disease will be handicapped in its progress by prompt treatment now. If the fungus is prevented from maturing spores, this will reduce the risk of more serious attacks next year.
In the vegetable patch we might maximise yields by feeding runner and French beans and also tomatoes, likewise Brussels sprouts and winter greens. It is well to pinch out the growing points on outdoor tomatoes as soon as three trusses of fruit have set, to hasten ripening, later trusses are unlikely to mature. During dry spells the flowers of runner beans will often wither without setting; a fine spray of water over the whole plant often helps to encourage a good set of beans.
As crops are harvested the ground may be hastily filled again with sowings of lettuce and spinach or planted up with cabbages and other winter greens. The maincrop potatoes can be lifted from this month onwards. We should now be turning our attention to hedge clipping. Some, such as the privet need trimming numerous times throughout the season, but for the majority one or twice a year is sufficient. This should be done no later than August to give the shrubs a chance to harden the new growth before the onset of winter.
The large-leaved evergreens, such as Laurel, should be trimmed with secateurs, not hedgecutters as these will leave ragged brown - edged leaves. Always cut your hedge narrower at the top than the bottom. When dealing with young hedges, especially those of beech, hornbeam, leylandii and thuja, it is advisable to allow them to reach the required height before taking out the tops. In the meantime just trim the ends of the branches to encourage them to thicken up.

Best Gifts for New Parents!
As a doula of 17 years and counting, my job is often referred to as ‘mothering the mother’. It’s a huge privilege and one that I love. It’s often hard, though, to explain what I do and how much of a help a doula can be before, during and after the new baby arrives. Those heady, whirly, frightening, lovely, new first days are often gone in a blink. So fast that it’s quite hard to remember how it was as soon as it’s gone (usually about the 6-12 week mark – what we refer to as ‘The Fourth Trimester’).
If you have a child, child-in-law or step-child about to welcome a new baby, here is a list of some of the things I, as a doula, might do or bring, that you can do yourself to be a huge support to the new family. It might not be how you would have liked it or what you think is best for your new grandchild/relative, but after 17 years I have a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn’t. So here are my top tips.
What to bring the new parents:-
- Ready-made homemade meals for the freezer
- Snacks and drinks, easy to hand the new mum
- Non-bio washing powder (the shock of how much washing a baby can make never cease to amaze a new parent!)
- A willingness to do some light chores, run the hoover round or take the car for a wash
- An offer to look after ‘things’/other children whilst mum, dad and baby go for a nap.
What not to bring new parents:-
- Bottles or dummies (find out their feeding preferences first!)
- Frilly outfits or toys that clutter the house
- An expectation to hold the baby, that is mum and dad’s prerogative for now
- Opinions on how to look after a baby – wait to be asked!
- Friends, children or pets
- Any book by Gina Ford
- Flowers (it’s just another thing to keep alive!)
But, did you know, you can often buy a gift voucher for a doula, cleaning company or food delivery service? This is way better than a teddy or chocolate. For more information go to www.motheringmojo.com or www.doula.org.uk
