Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary June 2021

Independent modern funeral directors

Dear Readers,

This month we are rejoicing that we have had restrictions lifted and actually have some what's on things to tell you about! There are sadly a couple of cancellations to inform you of - The Annual Horam Flower Show & The Horam Fun Day, but we do have a village event to look forward to in August on VE day. A chance for us all to get together as a community after a long and difficult year - see P22 for more information. Plus, a jumble sale in July! This month also seems another plea from me to comment on a planning application for Horebeech Lane that will see the Rosemead estate extended eastwards by 60 houses, across the field on the corner of Horebeech & Laundry Lane, currently traversed diagonally by a much loved & well used footpath. Please take the time to write in, if we say nothing, our green fields will continue to be concreted over. On that topic, last month the local elections saw the Green party make good in roads into the traditionally Tory held areas. The results were as follows: Bob Bowdler (Con) 2,015 Cornelie Usborne (Green) 1,754 Barry Simons (Lab) 292 Since the last election of 2017 the Green party increased their votes by +528%, the Cons by +2% and Labour lost votes by -10%. Libdems & UKIP did not stand. Overall ESCC now has (2017 elections in brackets): Con 27 (30) LibDems 11 (11) Green 4 (0) Independents 3 (5) One can only hope that a better mix of Independent and Green councillors will have an positive impact to stem the decimation of Wealden's green space, under the mainly Conservative control to date. Let's see if these foundations can be built upon over the next couple of years before the District elections in 2023. We are trying to update our Useful Contacts page - so if you are involved with any local groups, please let us know if we have the current contact listed. We very much hope that you are enjoying the local pubs and restaurants inside space, especially after such a chilly, wet May! Don’t forget the Post Office is at The Horam Centre, every Monday morning until 12 noon.
