Trudi - Mothering Mojo
Best Gifts for New Parents!
As a doula of 17 years and counting, my job is often referred to as ‘mothering the mother’. It’s a huge privilege and one that I love. It’s often hard, though, to explain what I do and how much of a help a doula can be before, during and after the new baby arrives. Those heady, whirly, frightening, lovely, new first days are often gone in a blink. So fast that it’s quite hard to remember how it was as soon as it’s gone (usually about the 6-12 week mark – what we refer to as ‘The Fourth Trimester’).
If you have a child, child-in-law or step-child about to welcome a new baby, here is a list of some of the things I, as a doula, might do or bring, that you can do yourself to be a huge support to the new family. It might not be how you would have liked it or what you think is best for your new grandchild/relative, but after 17 years I have a pretty good idea of what works and what doesn’t. So here are my top tips.
What to bring the new parents:-
- Ready-made homemade meals for the freezer
- Snacks and drinks, easy to hand the new mum
- Non-bio washing powder (the shock of how much washing a baby can make never cease to amaze a new parent!)
- A willingness to do some light chores, run the hoover round or take the car for a wash
- An offer to look after ‘things’/other children whilst mum, dad and baby go for a nap.
What not to bring new parents:-
- Bottles or dummies (find out their feeding preferences first!)
- Frilly outfits or toys that clutter the house
- An expectation to hold the baby, that is mum and dad’s prerogative for now
- Opinions on how to look after a baby – wait to be asked!
- Friends, children or pets
- Any book by Gina Ford
- Flowers (it’s just another thing to keep alive!)
But, did you know, you can often buy a gift voucher for a doula, cleaning company or food delivery service? This is way better than a teddy or chocolate. For more information go to www.motheringmojo.com or www.doula.org.uk

Do you have concerns regarding traffic speeds in Heathfield?
Heathfield Speedwatch group has been operating regular roadside sessions in the town since March 2018. The group records the details of vehicles exceeding the speed limit. The registered keeper of the vehicle receives a letter from the Police via Operation Crackdown and persistent speeders are visited by the Police. Also, those who abuse the operators can be reported to the Police.
What does Speedwatch do?
Speedwatch is not designed to get drivers prosecuted or fined, the aim is to educate drivers to drive safely at or below the speed limit.
We need more volunteer operators
Currently we are able to run 1-2 sessions a week. With more volunteers we could run more sessions and have enough cover for holidays and illness. You do not need to commit a large amount of time to Speedwatch. One hour a week would be ideal, but less or more is also fine. More volunteers allows for more flexibility in the group.
How to volunteer
Volunteers need to complete a short e-learning session which covers the safety elements of the role. After that is completed training is arranged at a Speedwatch session. Once you have been trained you can join a team of 2 or 3 at Speedwatch sessions on a regular basis. All equipment is supplied. It is a rewarding voluntary role with the knowledge that you are helping to keep people safe.
To join us either contact the co-ordinator, details above, or you can register yourself of the system. Go to www.communityspeedwatch.co.uk and select Register. Then Registration > join existing group > Sussex > Wealden District > Heathfield ESFRS then follow the on-screen prompts to register and to complete the e-learning.

" If the 24th of August be fair and clear, then hope for a prosperous autumn that year."
With reference to the above; heaven knows why but it was a piece of country lore. The brilliant tints of summer tend to give way later in the month to the richer, though softer, golds and bronzes of autumn, highlighted with vivid colour from phloxes, gladioli, and hollyhocks. By removing spent flowers before seed pods have a chance to form, summer flowering subjects may be induced to keep blooming for a greatly extended period, and if we nurse forlorn hopes of getting aboard an aircraft this summer, we may take this a step further by removing all flowers and buds on summer bedding to ensure they will not spend themselves in seed production before our return. The temporary relief thus afforded the plants will be reflected in a gay display on our return.
We must not relax warfare against insect pests and diseases. Fungoid diseases can be troublesome at this season and as soon as noted due measures should be taken. Watch especially roses for black spot, rust and mildew, although once tarnished, leaves may not be to be improved by application of sprays, the disease will be handicapped in its progress by prompt treatment now. If the fungus is prevented from maturing spores, this will reduce the risk of more serious attacks next year. In light of numerous forecastings of universal starvation and doom we may suppose all the gardens of Britain have been put over to vegetable production. To maximise yields we should be feeding runner and French beans and also tomatoes, likewise Brussels sprouts and winter greens. It is well to pinch out the growing points on outdoor tomatoes as soon as three trusses of fruit have set, to hasten ripening, later trusses are unlikely to mature. During dry spells the flowers of runner beans will often wither without setting; a fine spray of water over the whole plant often helps to encourage a good set of beans.
As crops are harvested the ground may be hastily filled again with sowings of lettuce and spinach or planted up with cabbages and other winter greens. The maincrop potatoes can be lifted from this month onwards. We should now be turning our attention to hedge clipping. Some, such as the privet need trimming numerous times throughout the season, but for the majority one or twice a year is sufficient. This should be done no later than August to give the shrubs a chance to harden the new growth before the onset of winter. The large-leaved evergreens, such as Laurel, should be trimmed with secateurs, not hedgecutters as these will leave ragged brown - edged leaves. Always cut your hedge narrower at the top than the bottom. When dealing with young hedges, especially those of beech, hornbeam, leylandii and thuja, it is advisable to allow them to reach the required height before taking out the tops. In the meantime just trim the ends of the branches to encourage them to thicken up.

Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council
News from Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council
In June, the Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council proudly supported, sponsored, and participated in the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings. This poignant celebration and remembrance of sacrifice took place at the Cade Street War Memorial, and was organised by Heathfield and District Bonfire society. As part of the event, our Chairman, Councillor Gill Snook, read a proclamation and laid a wreath. In a powerful display of unity, the beacon was lit, joining over a thousand others across the country.
This month, we were delighted to award grants to several deserving local organizations, including Cuckmere Flood Forum, the Welcome Baptist Church (to aid in the running of a SEND (Special
Educational Needs and Disabilities) children’s group), Heathfield Bonfire Society, and Cross-in-Hand Bowls Club. These grants are dedicated to supporting projects that make meaningful contributions to our community.
We are thrilled to announce our participation again in this year’s Le Marche event! Visit our stand for an engaging, environment-themed quiz with exciting prizes for the top three winners. Don’t miss the chance to say hello and meet some of our dedicated Councillors. We look forward to seeing you there!
If you ever have any questions or concerns that you would like to raise with the Parish Council please do not hesitate to ring or email us, our details appear below.

If you spend your time chasing butterflies, they’ll fly away. But if you spend your time making a beautiful garden, the butterflies will come to you. When you focus on improving yourself, everything you want will come to you. We attract based on who we are, not what we want.
As a Somatic Trauma informed Coach, I witness a lot to how the power of ones thoughts enables us to move through the curve balls in life and to find pockets of joy. Your mind is sometimes like a scratched vinyl record, the needle gets stuck. You keep playing the same thought pattern over and over and over. It’s not easy to lift the needle to reset your mind but knowing how to reset neural pathways and consciously stop the internal chatter and clear your mind is the breakthrough. One way is breathwork; Follow your breath moving in and out of your body. There are many different styles of breathwork that can help. Speak to yourself as if you were your best friend, with kindness and abundance. And as an unhealthy, sabotaging thought arises, replace it with a positive, supportive one.
Meditation is a great way to stop negative thought patterns and to change patterns of behaviour and create new habits. Meditation doesn’t have to be crossed legged, you don’t have to be sitting still and motionless. My meditation journey started with movement and a guided meditation during a fast paced walk in woods and across our beautiful fields in Horam and beyond, This helped me shift out of a freeze survival response and focus on me. Pausing is not something that society looks upon with affection or approval, more often than not we are praised for ‘being strong’ and ‘keeping going’ however this is one sure way to burn out and those feels will remain supressed.
The health benefits of meditation are impressive. Thousands of scientific studies have shown the benefits include stress reduction, better sleep, lower blood pressure, decreased depression and anxiety, improved cardiovascular function, and strengthened immunity. You’ll quickly discover meditating lifts your mood and enables you to feel increased happiness and peace.
With love and strength Michelle xxx

Wealden Works is a charitable organisation that runs free employability courses, to 16–24-year-olds who are NEET (not in employment, education or training) and are living in the Wealden area, offering both work and life skills to those attending. Wealden Works are there to support, provide guidance, networking opportunities and resources to help discover those hidden careers and employment opportunities to young people, whilst offering a unique 1:1 consultancy service to those just needing advice and guidance on career and employment opportunities and support with CV writing.
Choosing a career, apprenticeship, or further education course, (and in most cases also coping with mental well-being issues), is a challenging experience particularly for young people in rural areas. Our main aim is to provide professional career advice and personal guidance to create positive pathways for young people.
During the programme participants will receive a mix of both life and work skills, achieve accredited qualifications, employment opportunities, help producing professional CVs and introductions to local businesses understanding of personal budgeting and independent living, as well as various workshops, help to ensure they have the life skills to move forward with their lives.
The biggest challenge these young people face is not their determination to move forward but the barriers they face on their journey.
We moved into our new premises which are located on Station Road Heathfield, these premises have been created to provide a safe, and inviting place for young people to be. Our first group from our new building started on the 3rd July 2024 and so far we have 8 young people enrolled with us.

News from Oakdown and Carricks
Residents and staff have had a busy spring, our fantastic staff are always discovering new places for the residents to visit in the local and wider community, more recently those include Fishers Farm Park in West Sussex and the Butterfly Gardens at Ditchling Common – both are well worth a visit!
Even with all the wet days staff have managed to pick sunny days to visit the seaside at Bexhill, Eastbourne and Hastings, with some groups of residents it is essential to find places that are wheelchair friendly and the seaside promenades are just that luckily!
A big event this spring was a quiz hosted by ‘The Friends of Oakdown Trust’. The Friends of Oakdown Trust is a registered charity, founded over 30 years ago by a dedicated group of relatives to raise funds to provide extra support for our residents that they wouldn’t otherwise have access to. Since fundraising began the Friends have raised and donated over £100,000 in sensory, musical instruments and gardening equipment as well as diverse, accessible entertainment. A big achievement for a little charity! More recently they set and achieved their most ambitious ever fund-raising goal yet to install a hydrotherapy pool at Oakdown House. The pool was opened in 2022 and this amazing facility enables the residents’ access to a truly wonderful on-site sensory experience. The swim jets help the more able with exercise and the warm water jets & LED lighting provide a safe & sensory environment for gentle physio and stretching exercises, for those less able.
The quiz in April 2024 raised over £500 towards the next big fundraising drive for the Trust which is to install an all-weather enclosure & over-head tracking hoist, so it becomes a truly year-round facility for the residents. Look out for more fundraising events on our Facebook and Instagram pages or of you would like to support the Friends of Oakdown Trust or make a donation please contact the charity treasurer, Barbara Kingham, at friends@oakdownhouse.co.uk. The swim spa is used and enjoyed by both Oakdown House and Carricks Brook residents.
We love to hear why our staff enjoy their roles at Oakdown House and Carricks Brook so I will leave you with this one from Em:
"As a resident's key worker I get him his daily essentials, spend 1:1 time with him and have such a lovely bond with him. I enjoy being his key worker because I’ve been able to get to know him and his needs so well and it gives me great pleasure to see him happy."
