Welcome to Autumn and Bonfire season! Sadly because of Covid and insurance issues, Heathfield & District Bonfire Society are unable to put on a display in November. So, let's hope the dodgy weather hasn't scuppered the pumpkin crops for Halloween! Last month saw the closure of a Horam institution. We are sad to announce that Horam Village Stores have closed their doors for the last time. Everyone in the village wishes Peter a speedy recovery from his recent ill health, so he can get stuck in to enjoying his retirement. His magnificent Banoffee tarts were the stuff of legend, along with his home made pork pies and Scotch eggs. I want to personally thank Peter for introducing me to the benefits of kefir and sharing his Christmas drinks recipes with me. I sure we have all sampled the lovely cheeses and other delights from his many trips across the Channel and stopped to pat his dog Rogan. Many locals will have fond memories of Peter over the many years he has served the village. Thank you Peter! This month's development update focuses on the wanton destruction of land at Coxlow House on the A267 opposite Horam rec. More valuable trees, flora & fauna destroyed - see page 40 - 41 for more details. Don’t miss the return of ‘The Pogue Traders’ on Oct 30th from 9pm at the May Garland!

Local Vines Cross residents Skip & Jan Maskell are part of our wonderful Diary delivery team, making sure you get the Diary every month. Last month saw them celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on 25th September 2021! They married at Christ Church in Horam on the 25th September 1971 after meeting at a tug of war meeting (how very East Sussex!) Skip lived in Cowbeech and Jan lived in Horam. After they married, they moved to Hellingly, before moving to Vines Cross where they have lived for 47 years. They have one daughter named Samantha. Many congratulations to them both!

CELEBRATING A YEAR OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE This time last year Dawn & I embarked on our biggest challenge. After 3 years of working on the Diary together, we fulfilled a long term desire to open a contemporary, female led funeral directors. A company that put the families it served at the heart of it’s business. Giving people all the choices available to them to ensure that a unique and personal send off could be created for their loved one. Most of us have similar experiences of a funeral. Usually at a church or a crematorium within a standard time frame. We wanted to be able to give families both the traditional choice, if that is what they wanted but also services at alternative venues, or even to hold the funeral at home. Despite the unreliable weather this year, we have arranged some amazing garden funerals, which provide a more relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time for friends & family to contribute in beautiful surroundings. These contributions give those attending an amazing insight into someone’s life, that they may never have known. It also avoids the logistics of getting mourners from the funeral venue to the wake. We launched our business purely co-incidentally in a pandemic and lock downs meant that we struggled to meet families face to face, but we still managed to create unique services, even holding one in our family snug at our premises on Heathfield High Street. Over the last twelve months we have had a variety of vehicles taking people to their final resting place, including a Land Rover and a leopard print vintage Daimler, we’ve had art installations at a funeral and live performances of spoken word and music from friends & family. This has been for both Dawn & I a very rewarding year, to be able to support families in their loss and help to create a farewell that is perfect for their loved one is our driving force. We have had incredible reviews from the families we have served and we intend to continue providing a clear, transparent & flexible service for anyone who finds themselves having to arrange a funeral. IMPORTANT – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – HELP SHAPE HORAM OF THE FUTURE

As part of the Design Statement for what our Parish will look like in the future, the Parish Council need volunteers to be part of a Steering Group to help shape how residents would like Horam Parish of the future to look. Please contact the Clerk, (email and telephone are below). The more residents support we get, the more the Planning Inspector takes note.

Please take photos of the places/buildings in Horam Parish that you like, and, also those that you do not like; then send with your comments to the Clerk (e-mail below), the more you send the better. This will help the Steering Group and the delivery of the Neighbourhood Plan to shape the Horam Parish of the future, the way we would like it shaped; not just for us, but for our children, our grandchildren and future generations. TREE WARDEN

Sadly, our very effective Tree Warden, Chris Smith, passed away recently. The Parish Council is looking for a resident volunteer to take over this important (although unpaid) role. We do not want professional tree surgeons. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic and will enjoy a reason to be out in all weathers around the Parish. It is not a full-time nor even regular part-time role; it is more an as-and-when role for you to make your own; some training will be given. Please contact the Clerk if this interests you.

PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE – Horam Parish Council will be planting a Cherry Tree in the Me-

morial Garden. The date of this will be advised, but is likely to be this month, weather permitting. Residents are encouraged to plant a tree in their own gardens, if space permits. We may not have the space that Capability Brown had, but we can still invest in the future ‘look’ of Horam; as well as do a small bit towards capturing carbon dioxide.

NOW FOR SOME MORE GOOD NEWS – Donation to Age Concern Community Mini-Bus

Horam Parish Council has made a donation of £20,000 to Age Concern towards the cost of their brand-new Community mini-bus. This mini-bus is a vital link which enables older residents of our Parish to get to and from shops and various social events, it will be replacing the old one very soon.

UNFORTUNATELY SOME NOT SO GOOD NEWS - HORAM PLAY PARK

As you will already be aware, the drainage improvement works started in mid-September. Unfortunately, we have been advised that the Play Park should not re-open until the newly sown grass has grown sufficiently. This is to preserve the surface as well as for safety reasons, reluctantly, the Parish Council has agreed to this even though it means that the Play Park will be closed during the October half-term. These works are being funded by Horam Parish Council and it is hoped that they will improve the surface of the play area during the winter months. The skate board park will remain open while this work is being carried out.

Unfortunately, the email address for Cathy Gilling our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for Horam that was given in previous editions of the Village Diary was erroneous. If you wish to bring anything to her attention she can be contacted by email on catherine.gilling@sussex.pnn.police.uk However, for emergencies contact the Police by phoning 999. Her next surgery will be held in the Horam Centre on Tuesday, 5th October from 10.00 a.m. until Noon.

COMMUNITY Young at Heart started our new term with Jayne Torvill generously sparing the time to come and talk to our members, Dallington Primary School and Punnetts Town Primary School via Zoom. Questions and answers unbarred! The last time Jayne visited us I was asking if she’d ever skated in the wild on a frozen lake - her answer had been no. Since then Jayne and Christopher Dean filmed, “Skating on thin ice”, their quest to find a suitable frozen lake to skate but with climate change it was hard to find. A documentary to watch. Jayne recalled it being incredible but absolutely freezing! Christopher Dean rang Jayne during our session so we were all able to talk briefly with him too! We have started a new scheme with the primary schools, Poetry Together, which was started by Giles Brandreth and backed by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. The children are bringing poems they have written to Young at Heart to read to our members. Members are choosing poems to read to the children. This week Evelyn, aged 92, brought her Whinnie the Pooh book which she was given for her 4th Birthday to read an extract from. Heartwarming - I’m sure there wasn’t a dry eye. We then composed a poem between the school and members which was very amusing and ended up as follows On the day we visited Young at Heart, We all read poetry “Oh what a lark”! Lions, Tigers, Zebras and of course the hippo too, Evelyn read her poem all about Whinnie the Pooh, Stars, planets, Pluto and mars, We all read our poems and we were stars. Toby went on holiday to The Isle of White, He ate fish and chips - they were alright! Washing machines, laundry, washing and leaves, Were all poems members had up their sleeves. The story of the meatball ended in a bush, The poor meatball ended as mush! We heard about the teacher shopping on a Saturday, Who would have thought that teachers are allowed out for the day! October Gardening Diary ‘ For every fog in October, a snow in winter.' Rain, wind and cloud often characterise our weather in October, though we may hope for an Indian summer about the middle of the month when a short spell of mellow anticyclonic weather often occurs. We should be taking full advantage of these gentle spells to finish up our autumn digging. Deadline Trafalgar Day. Weeds make a strong showing in autumn, so that hoe should be doing brisk work; for great mischief they will do if left unchecked at this late season. We may now make a start with tidying up the perennials in the herbaceous border, some gardeners prefer to leave the old topgrowth on the plant for winter protection whilst some like to clear away the old growth once flowering is finished, leaving to leave a more shipshape and tidy border. A tidier border feels healthier and less prone to harbouring disease and mould over the winter and also allows the soil to be more effectively forked over, though this removal of the top cover give less protection from frost. Dahlias may be lifted once the foliage has blackened, there is little point in leaving them in beyond the end of the month as tuber growth will be completed by then. Around the middle of the month we can may start planting out wallflowers, polyanthus, forget-menots, Sweet Williams, Canterbury bells, foxgloves and other similar plants which are grown as biennials or for a spring bedding display. Before putting these in, the soil should be dug to a spade’s depth. Fertiliser may be added but only of the slow releasing types, i.e bone meal and not a quick release nitrogen based spring or summer fertiliser. The last cut of the lawn will now take place, the blade height may be lifted; no golfing green cuts in October. The vegetable plot. Push ahead with autumn digging. We dwelt on dung and his cousins at length in the last issue but it is worth reminding ourselves again that September and October are the months to dig in old horse droppings or compost, especially important for brassicas, not too much for the root crops or you may end up with amusingly shaped vegetables next year. Bastard trench heavy ground, throwing in newspaper, Christmas jumpers, gossip magazines, sharp sand, compost and rats; anything to improve the texture and workability of our clay. Only after a morning of bastard trenching may we, without guilt or self-reproach, indulge in that long pipe in the potting shed. Make the most of the last of the Runner and French beans by picking all sizeable beans daily, especially if frost is forecast. Autumn sown broad beans are a must, a sturdy two inch bean plant seen pushing through at Christmas makes a happy sight and bodes well for an early and black fly resistant crop in spring. In anticipation of rain and gale, it is very important to firmly stake Brussels sprouts. All brassicas need to be firmly planted; they greatly resent any movement or looseness around the roots. Top growth of Jerusalem artichokes can be cut down but no need to lift the roots as they may be dug as required. Beware of a surfeit of this root in polite company. Sites for November planting of fruit trees may be thoroughly prepared now by digging in plenty of old manure with a handful of bonemeal. It pays to do this well in advance of planting to allow the mix to fester down and the air to escape, likewise new rose beds should be thoroughly prepared, especially so on our clay soil. Rambler roses may now be pruned and trained, the aim is to cut out as much of the growth that has already flowered, those that make strong growth from the base should have the old stems cut out at ground level whilst those which make little basal growth should have the old growth cut back to a point just above that at which the strong new growth starts. Now that the cricket season is over we may bestir ourselves to switch off the wireless set, knock out our pipes, end our ruminations over the onions drying in the shed and get out into the garden, there are jobs to do wherever we look and we are losing three minutes of light a day, so we can ill afford any tardiness in the garden.

Development Update More destruction and loss of bio-diversity Coxlow House/Coxlow Farm On the last bank holiday this Summer, residents of Grange Close had to endure the noise of heavy plant machinery ripping out trees, hedging, flora & fauna from a strip of land alongside Coxlow House. This land faces onto the Horam Bowls Club on the A267 and leads to Coxlow Farm land. Coxlow Farm has been offered up in the Wealden District Council document know as SHELAA as a possible site for 250 houses. It has been on the SHELAA for a few years, but no planning application has yet been submitted. Sadly, this clearance work is an indicator that a planning application will soon be forthcoming. Residents have complained to Horam Parish Council and local councillor Sue Stedman about the destruction of this site, with no notice and on a bank holiday. The developer Woolridge Group have sent an apology to the clerk at HPC, but no further details have been shared. We sent some questions to Woolridge to respond to or issue a statement, but despite chasing for a response, we didn't hear back in time for our deadline. Woolridge have said to HPC that they are happy to hear from residents, if you do get in touch - please let us know if you receive a response. The questions posed were: • • • • • • •

Who owns the land? Where are the ecological & biodiversity reports for this site, undertaken before clearance commenced? Has a bat survey been conducted on the Nissan hut on the land? Do you have the authority to commence this work? Are you acting on behalf of the land owner with an option to gaining planning approval? When will you be submitting an application? Horam Village Hall Management Committee Vacancy for two Charity Trustees Would you like to join us as a trustee of Horam Village Hall and Recreation Ground Charity no. 305527? This past year has been another busy one for the Village Hall committee, with continuing improvement works throughout the hall and recreation ground that have included outdoor table tennis, new windows, re-sanded floor, the outdoor planters and the invaluable defibrillator. We are very happy that the application for the Get Active Pathway and Pump track has now been approved, so that we can then start to fundraise for this well supported project. We still have projects to pursue and continue to fundraise for these. These includes a new kitchen, roadside signage, electric charging points and cycle racks. As a committee we hope we have developed, and continue to do so, a Village Hall that the village can be proud of and willing to use; one that is great value for money and a venue suitable for any number of uses and occasions. A venue for entertainment, community events and leisure activities. As volunteers, it is very much appreciated the time committee members give up. We have a booking secretary who takes care of the regular hall users (each night of the week) and the private bookings at the weekends. The management committee comprises of Charity Trustees and representatives of the main user groups (Scouts, football, bowls, tennis, allotments and flower show). The committee meet a maximum of six times per year to take care of the management of the hall. Our Annual Meeting takes place in November at the hall. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank John Timbs for his years of service to Horam Village Hall.
