NEWS FROM NUS GHANI

Regular, reliable and affordable public transport is key to our lives in Wealden. I have always been relentless in my work to secure more funding to deliver better infrastructure and services, and I’m proud that we’ve had some great successes in improving transport accessibility in Wealden over the past couple of years.

Thanks to the Department for Transport’s £1.9m investment at Eridge and £4.7m refurbishment at Crowborough, both train stations are now fully step-free, accessible to all commuters, and fit for the future. This comes in addition to the investment of £41.4m, which enabled East Sussex County Council to deliver improvements to bus services in Wealden and across the county; the £2 single bus journey cap which has now been extended to the end of 2024; and the investment of £157,000 to expand electric vehicle charging points in car parks across Wealden district including in Forest Row, Crowborough, Uckfield, Wadhurst and Hailsham.

I know from my regular surgeries and casework that potholes and road standards are one of the biggest concerns locally. I’m pleased that Frant, Groombridge and Uckfield will benefit from the nationwide programme of pothole repairs and road resurfacing projects, made possible by the first tranche of £8.3 billion in reallocated HS2 funding which saw over £52.4m allocated to East Sussex County Council as part of a long-term, 11-year plan to improve local roads. These muchneeded improvements will ensure smoother journeys as well as increase the safety of all road users, and I will continue to work with local authorities to ensure that Wealden continues to receive funding to improve the safety and durability of our roads.

However, I know that there is more to be done and I continue working to deliver further improvements for services in Wealden. I am always keen to hear your views, which allow me to better represent you in meetings with local authorities and putting forward a stronger case for additional resources for Wealden from national government including improving our transport network. If you’d like to share your thoughts and priorities with me, please feel free to do so online via my website at: www.nusghani.org.uk/transportsurvey

Trudi - Mothering Mojo

It doesn’t matter if this is your first or your fifth baby, where to give birth when the all-important day comes can be a difficult choice to make. You might assume you can only go to the hospital that is closest to you. You might think you have to go where your previous baby was born or where your GP tells you to book in. In which case you will be surprised at how much choice we have around Heathfield for families preparing to welcome a new baby soon.

Hospital

Your nearest main hospital with birth facilities is likely to be Tunbridge Wells (Pembury) or Hastings (Conquest). Both of these hospitals can offer you midwives, consultants, all the pain relief you could shake a contraction at and the ability to perform a caesarean birth should you need it in an emergency. This is a great option for those who prefer the idea of a high-tech/medically supported birth environment, those with higher risk factors or those under consultant-led care. You don’t necessarily have to stick with your nearest hospital, take a look at Haywards Heath and Brighton for comparison.

Midwifery-led Unit or Birth Centre

Our closest birth centre is Crowborough and we are so lucky to have it right on our doorstep. A more comforting and ‘home from home’ environment run by experienced midwives. Still plenty of pain relief options, including birth pools and sterile water injections. The postnatal rooms have double beds in them so your partner can stay with you overnight after the baby is born. If you need unforeseen emergency support you can be transferred by ambulance to the nearest consultant-led hospital at the press of a (phone) button.

Homebirth

Statistically, research shows this is the ‘safest’ place to give birth in terms of interventions, length of labour, pain scoring and breastfeeding. But for some reason has wavered in popularity for a generation or two (before that, it’s where we all did it!). You will still have the option of gas and air and a birth pool (if you hire/buy one). And if you don’t fancy the thought of being moved during labour but want the same quality of midwife as you would find in a hospital or birth centre, then this is a wonderful option.

" St. Swithun's day if ye do rain, for forty days it will remain. St. Swithun's day if thou be fair, for forty days it'll rain no more."

St Swithun was a down-to-earth Anglo-Saxon bishop, venerated by all and especially by the common folk of England. He was constantly on the move; travelling to all corners of Saxon England on foot, giving alms and feasting the poor. Born during the reign of king Egbert and in his latter years tutoring the young prince Alfred, he became one of England's best loved saints. In keeping with his love of the common folk he requested was to be interred under the pavement outside Winchester cathedral: "Where it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and the drops of rain from on high". But in 971 his remains were brought inside the new cathedral to lie beside the Egg kings of Wessex, but not before the outraged saint had beseached God to cast down a tremendous deluge upon the workmen opening up his grave. The legend of the forty days of rain may have some scientific basis as well; the jet stream will often have settled into a static position around the 15th of July, (The Saint's feast day); if it lies north of the British Isles we may count on a long period of continental high pressure, deflecting weather systems upon the heads of the Scots and ther sundry northern tribes, and if to the south, Atlantic and northerly weather may prevail, giving a wet and dreary summer, though full of the life-giving rain that St Swithun so loved.

So, back down at ground level we are aware that the gardener's work is never finished and even now, with the beds and borders in their full blaze of summer glory, a thought must be given to winter and to next season.

Spring flowering bulbs should be lifted and such subjects as autumn flowering Crocuses may be planted to give them a good chance to develop their flowers. Any branches on plum trees showing signs of silverleaf disease should be cut out at once and burned. This disease causes a metallic silvering of the leaf and can quickly spread around the whole tree. It is usually fatal.

Now is the time for thinning the apples. If the king fruit ( The one in the middle of the cluster ) has not already been removed and there are other fruits to take its place, then it is these king fruits that should go. Pears, plums and even dessert cherries will all repay careful thinning if there has been a heavy set, and in our garden there has been this year.

In the vegetable garden the planting of brassicas should be pushed ahead just as quickly as ground becomes vacant.

Continue to sow salads such as lettuce and radish for succession. A last sowing of French beans for a late crop may be made. Runner and French beans should be fed as they begin to make pods. Onions and shallots may be lifted and dried once the foliage starts to wither. And a fine sight they make hanging from the rafters in the shed. Celery must be watered frequently or it will bolt and run to seed. If the reader kept a bag of soot from last Autumn's chimney sweeping, as I'm sure we all did, a dusting of this makes an excellent deterrent to celery fly (One might try the local chimney sweep for supplies, I believe he advertises in this publication). Fruiting tomatoes should be fed regularly. This is a good time to gather herbs for drying, tied up in small bundles they make handsome companions to the knots of onions in the shed.

Faded flower buds of Delphiniums, Lupins, and other early flowering perennials should be cut out before seed is set to encourage secondary growth. Roses too, should be regularly dead-headed.

JULY GARDENING DIARY

For autumn flowers of Lupins and Delphiniums, the plants should be cut down at the beginning of this month and watered with a liquid fertiliser.

Cut grass makes an excellent mulch for carrot and spinach beds and around bush fruits, raspberries and Sweet peas, Lilies, Dahlias, Gladioli and other flowering plants, though not laid on too thick for fear of starving the soil of nitrogen.

As roses come to the end of their first flush of flowering, they can be fed with a high potash fertiliser to boost the second lot of flowers. Dead-heading of all faded blooms should be carried out at every opportunity.

Dahlias can be fed now but be careful to keep the feed well away from stems and leaves. Taller varieties should be securely staked.

Towards the end of the month we may start propagating many shrubs. For lack of space I refer reader to the relevant literature for methods of propagation. Cuttings of Forsythia, flowering Currant, Escallonia, Weigela and Deutzia and many other subjects will all root easily. Whilst we may allow ourselves on occasion to sit back in the shed indulging in a long pipe and quiet ruminations over our onions and herbs so fragrantly drying above us in the rafters, with its soundtrack of cooing wood pigeons and on the wireless, the clatter of Australian wickets a-falling, we must still occasionally gird ourselves to keep the hoe going as often as hoers' elbow will allow. All borders should receive a vigorous stirring from the Dutch hoe at least every seven days.

Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council

News from Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council

In May, Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council held its Annual General Meeting. This important gathering, among other functions, serves to elect the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Council for the upcoming year. The Council confirmed that Councillor Gill Snook and Councillor Simon Leney would continue in their roles as Chair and Vice-Chair, respectively.

The Council has completed its response to Wealden’s draft local plan. You can view the full response on our website at www.hwpc.org.uk. This comprehensive effort is crucial for providing the Parish Council’s feedback on a plan that will shape development and planning strategy through to 2040.

The Council organised a community meeting with South East Water about the major water main replacement works. This meeting gave local residents a valuable opportunity to speak directly with South East Water representatives and ask any questions they had about the project.

The demolition of the old East Sussex County Council Youth Centre has been completed, marking the end of Phase One of the project. The site will now be cleared in preparation for the construction of the new state-of-the-art Youth Hub, which is set to open its doors in Spring 2025.

The Councils Leisure, Amenities and Burials Committee agreed extra funding for maintenance work at Darch’s Wood during 2024/25 and would like to pass on their thanks to all of the Volunteers who work so hard to look after the site.

If you ever have any questions or concerns that you would like to raise with the Parish Council please do not hesitate to ring or email us, our details appear below

Seasonal Recipe of the Month

JULY

This month’s recipe is delicious salmon encoute. if you have a recipe you would like to share email heathfieldtowndiary@gmail.com.

METHOD

INGREDIENTS

1 onion olive oil

4 cloves of garlic

500g frozen spinach

1 x 320g sheet puff pastry

4 x 130g salmon fillets

2 large free-range eggs

1 heaped tb spoon red pesto

1 lemon

Preheat the oven to 220°C/425°F/gas 7. Peel and chop the onion and place in a pan on a medium heat with 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Peel, slice and add the garlic. Grate in the lemon zest, cook for 10 minutes. Stir in the spinach, cover, and cook for 5 minutes, for the last 5 minutes remove the lid, or until all the liquid has gone. Roll out the pastry and place it on its paper on a baking tray. Spread the spinach on the pastry, place the salmon fillets on top, use the paper to fold in the pastry to encase the salmon, leaving it exposed on the top. Brush the exposed pastry with beaten eggs, bake at the bottom of the oven for 15 minutes. While that is cooking, beat the pesto and remaining egg together. Once 15 minutes of cooking is finished, pour the egg mixture over the salmon and gaps. Return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. Serve with lemon if desired, enjoy!

Welcome to Walter & Mair, your local family Estate Agents

As a local family, we are proud to announce that we will soon be launching our services to Heathfield and the surrounding communities.

Walter & Mair is a well established successful Agency operating on the Surrey/London border and we are now ready to bring our unique services to our local community.

We go beyond the conventional to ensure your home truly stands out. From meticulous staging to handpicking the perfect photographs for our advertising, every detail is thoughtfully crafted to showcase your home in its best light, ensuring your property gets the attention it deserves.

Although we do not officially launch until September, we are open for valuations and home-moving advice. We look forward to meeting you soon.
