Welcome to the month of bonfires, sausages, fireworks and staying in! This month is pretty special this year, because it’s 100 years ago that The Great War came to an end. You’ll see in our What’s On page that there are lots of events on 11th November marking this occasion. Why not take part, we owe so much to those that fought for our country – read more on page 44 about some of our local boys that paid the ultimate price for our freedom! The bonfire season is upon us, please consider when planning your event, that we live in a rural area with livestock and horses in many surrounding fields. Please take all the necessary precautions you can to combat the consequences that fireworks can have on livestock and pets. Have you ever visited Horam Park Golf Club? The darker nights aren’t an issue with their new, refurbished and upgraded floodlight driving range. Pop down for a spot of practice and something tasty to eat and drink in their friendly, welcoming clubhouse. Please see this months’ Business Spotlight on the club on page 34 to find out more about this hidden gem. We are all very sad to see News & Food close their doors for the final time and the Co-op have advised that they are not going to be taking the PO within their store. We have asked them why not, and at the time of going to print are still awaiting an answer. Unfortunately the Post Office have made running their services exceedingly unfruitful, so the chances of reinstating one in the village are slim. Watch this space. Comments on the Draft Local Plan were submitted last month and we wait to see what the Planning Inspector thinks of Wealden’s plans to double the number of people in Horam, it is anticipated that this will be in January 2019. In the meantime, please see page 12 for this months planning update.

58 Merrydown (currently being built out) 59 Grammont/Rydon, A267 end of Chiddingly Rd, currently being built out 20 Coylet Farm, Horebeech Lane – static mobile homes
We offer a full range of Building Surveying and Architectural Services on all building types
3 Vreeburg, Horebeech Lane (currently being built out) Some of the remaining sites have been identified within the development boundary but don’t have live planning applications in yet: • 250 Coxlow Farm, off of A267 west of the village. • 36 on crematorium site (Wealden’s own building company responsible for this build). • 68 Hedgerows , Chiddingly Road. This was originally meant to be for 38 houses but the Town Planners Parker Dann (who have designed the plan and were responsible for Rosemead ) have increased it by almost 50%. Those who made it to their ‘public consultation’ will have had the opportunity to comment on the plans. Areas of concern were: • Too many houses on the site – buying into a rural idyll and then finding yourself on an urban estate is not good. Wealden’s own planning guide is 30 dwellings per hectare. This site is 3 acres = 1.21406 hectares. • Road layout/access onto A267/traffic safety No thought had been given to the impact of traffic approaching from the south. Four cremations a day will mean increased road load into and out of the crematorium, with traffic queuing behind hearses and funeral corteges. Those with less tolerance may be tempted to overtake this bottleneck and approach the access of Hedgerows onto A267 at speed.

Ringing Remembers Honouring Bell-Ringers who lost their lives in WW1 When church bells rang out on 11 November 1918, they announced the end of the most catastrophic war the world had seen. In 2018, a nationwide project was launched to honour the 1,400 bell-ringers lost during the First World War. They aimed to recruit 1,400 new ringers across the country. 11 bell-ringers from 9 towers across Sussex are known to have lost their lives in WW1. All Saints Church in Old Heathfield advertised for recruits to learn the art of bell-ringing. I went along to my first meeting in May 2018, and was hooked! Whilst learning, I have often thought about Harold Jenner. Harold was born in Hellingly, grew up in Heathfield and rang at All Saints, where I ring now. He volunteered, and joined the Royal Sussex Regiment. In 1915, Harold was transferred to the front. In May that year he was shot through the head. Whilst Harold survived, his health rapidly declined and he was discharged from service. He married and the couple lived in Church Street, Heathfield. But sadly, his condition worsened. Harold died on 2 November 1918, aged 28. His young wife Daisy never remarried. She died in 1966, and was buried with Harold. Church bells will ring out across our nation on 11 November, just as they did on that day 100 years ago for the Armistice. Whilst I have discovered that bell ringing is rather more challenging than it looks, I still hope to be ready to participate! Beverley Toogood, Horam (with thanks to Nicola Walker for her research on Harold Jenner and the many other men from our area who fell in WW1)

Free Workout Anyone? Horam Village Hall Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in our public consultations over the last two years, regarding the redevelopment of the play area, new adult outdoor gym equipment and a new skate-park. We are pleased to announce that Horam Parish Council have taken over responsibility for the redevelopment. We are delighted the adult fitness equipment has already been installed to the left of the car park. The play area is soon to be closed off and the installation of new play area equipment will start mid-November, and be completed within a few weeks thereafter. The building of the skate park will take place after the completion of these first two elements, at a date yet to be advised.

As you may be aware, since the new Merrydown development there has been less parking near the recreation ground. Because of this we have noticed an increasing number of people parking on the grass in front of our hut, in the driveway (exclusively used by leaders), or between us and the village hall. As the weather changes, vehicles parked on this grass churn up the ground making it hard to keep tidy. We will shortly be adding planters around our circle to deter this happening and help protect our users. When mowing we have also noticed an increasing amount of dog poo, please remember to bag and bin. All leaders at the Scout hut are unpaid volunteers who keep the hut and surrounding area tidy for the good of its users, so please support us by following our rules. Thank You. Paul Sutton, Group Scout Leader

reen G s d ar ar y Mayn nity Prim u Comm l Schoo This term, Monkeys class (Year 3) has been learning about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. This year, Sukkot starts on 23rd September and lasts until 30th October. It reminds Jews that their ancestors lived in tents as they wandered in the desert on their escape from Egypt to Israel. Every synagogue builds a Sukkah for the whole community every year. Families who have enough space in their back garden often build their own Sukkah there. In Israel, many flats are specially planned so that a Sukkah can be put up on the balcony. Fruit is hung in the Sukkah because Sukkot is a harvest festival. These are examples of Sukkah:

Once they had learned about the festival, the children had the challenge of building their own miniature Sukkahs using material, sticks and anything else they could find on the field! Some of the final Sukkahs:
“I didn’t realise they were for eating “I think Sukkot brings friends and family in. I thought they were for sleeping!” and new people together.” “I think Jews deserve to celebrate for a time for family to get together, to eat and drink happily and to celebrate the escape from Egypt.” I learned that they escaped from Egypt because they were slaves and they went on to Israel. “I think it’s nice to bring friends and family round to have a meal in a Sukkah.”

Business Spotlight A True Hidden Gem
HORAM PARK GOLF CLUB
HORAM PARK GOLF CLUB
We look forward to welcoming you
There has been a golf club on Chiddingly Road since 1985. It was built by Glen Johnson – who used to play football for Aldershot. He may well have had the same idea as current owner Steve Greenfield. Steve bought the club in 2004 because he loved golf and was intent on improving his handicap. Unfortunately, running the club takes up most of his time and he now rarely gets a game in! The club is run by Steve and his son Adam and it’s immediately obvious from the atmosphere at the club, that this is a family run business. Unlike lots of golf clubs where you need to know the right people or have a healthy income to be a member, this club breaks all those stereotypes. It’s friendly, inclusive and welcoming to all, any age, any experience can come along and enjoy the beautiful 9 hole course set amongst mature trees and lakes. In fact, they encourage everyone to play one another by a weekly draw from a hat – matching golfers of all different ages, gender and experience. This encourages the community feel of the club and helps people to learn from one another. If you feel that you need some support to learn the basics or improve your game – they can help. Their fifteen bay, all weather, floodlit driving range has just been fully refurbished and there is also a pitch & putt course for you to practice your short game, or have fun with the family. There is an indoor swing studio where their professionals can video your golf swing and help you improve it. Youngsters can sign up for the Young Masters Junior golf summer camps or the YMG Junior Golf Academy for boys & girls, 6 to 14 years old. And if you aren’t into golf, enjoy a freshly cooked meal or drink in the clubhouse, no membership required! Both the bar and restaurant are available for hire for functions and parties. If you haven’t yet found this lovely spot in the Sussex countryside, we highly recommend a visit.
WONDERFUL PRACTICE FACILITIES We have a 15 bay covered & flood lit driving range. Open all year round. New balls just arrived. BAR & RESTAURANT Available to hire for functions & parties Open to the public 7 days a week SUPER SUNDAY SPECIAL Delicious English breakfast only £2 when paying for green fee 9 or 18 holes PITCH & PUTT COURSE Our pitch & putt course is fun for all the family & also a perfect place to practice your short game. We will proceed to publish as shown above unless we receive any
Horam and The Great War This year sees the centenary of the end of the First World War as fought on the Western front. Looking across the Channel we saw that visiting the sites of the Battle of the Somme would involve no more effort than a drive to Portsmouth, so in an attempt to inform a typically ill-informed pre-teen about one of the most formative events in British history, the author and his wife thought it a good idea to send the child up the road The Sutton Brothers to the Horam war memorial to record the names, he was then set to work on the Commonwealth war graves commission website to find any that were buried on the Somme and then transported to France to track down his names for this short feature. Of the thirty four names on the Horam war memorial, four would be easily accessible to us in the Somme area, of these, two have known graves and two are remembered only on the Thiepval monument to the missing of the Somme, two of over 72,000 with no known grave. Some of the very last names from the great 1916 battle to be recorded for the memorial to the missing were Arthur Gilbert Decimus and Anthony Godfrey Dorman MC, brothers who fell within hours of each other in the last days of the battle. Following the accidental death of their father in Eastbourne, Emily Dorman moved with her children to Brooklands in Horam. They were obviously a get up and go family, with the father making his fortune in iron and steel, Decimus becoming Scout leader of the Horeham Scout troop and Anthony taking holy orders at King’s College London. Both brothers fought through the summer on the Somme and died during the closing days of the fighting, when the coming of winter and the infamous mud put a stop to the offensive. Private D. Dorman was killed fighting at the Battle of the Ancre, last resting place of many Sussex boys whilst his officer brother fell leading his company over the top in a different part of the great Somme killing grounds. Such was the ferocity of the fighting that neither body was ever identified, seen now as just two names amongst the 72,000 at Thiepval. Harry Sutton was from a farming family living at Redlands House on Vines Cross Road. As soon as he turned eighteen he enlisted with the 15th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps and left for The Western Front. The family received a cruel shock when news of Harry’s death preceded the official telegram via a letter from the nursing sister. Harry Sutton is buried in a quiet corner at Heilly station cemetery, another of those beautiful and dignified Lutyens designed cemeteries. Being loyal sons of Empire, his father chose ‘Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori ’ for his epitaph. The present tranquillity of the site, on a slope backed by woodland and far from major roads belies the chaos and noise of the place in 1918, so near the front line and, as a casualty clearing station, thronged with the wounded and dying. So pressured was the place that many bodies were interred together in the same grave, as can be seen from the personal details, sometimes up to three sets on each stone. A long way from Vines Cross Road indeed. From the location and the date of his death, 2nd September 1918 we might presume he fell near the end of the Battle of Amiens, during the March to Victory. The Battle of Amiens was the high-water mark of the German 1918 Spring Offensive, designed to take Amiens, the hub of the British Expeditionary force and key to our whole front line, with the British out of the war the French and the rest of the allies would have had to sue for peace. Famously the Germans were stopped by the Australians on the Roman road at the Eastern approaches to Amiens at the Village of Villers-Bretonneux. It was the conclusive turning point of the war, the place where began the ‘March to Victory’ and site of the burial of our next Horam soldier. Robert Budd was an older soldier, having first joined up in 1901 with the Royal Field
48
Artillery, probably under age at sixteen. By 1905 Robert had married Florence Piper at the Hailsham registry office and by 1912 had produced three children. The eldest of whom, Jack, was one of 94 children at Vines Cross school, The family now lived in Vines Cross with Robert taking work as a farm labourer. Immediately at the outbreak of the war, the owner of Herstmonceux Castle, Colonel Claude Lowther MP applied for permission to raise bodies of troops, which were to become the 11th, 12th and 13th (Southdowns) battalions Royal Sussex Regiment, otherwise known to us as Lowther’s lambs and to the Germans as ‘ The Bastard Sussek’ Robert joined the 11th Bt. and though he kept quiet about his previous army experience, his abilities saw him promoted to sergeant by June 1915. On the 30th of June 1916, the 11th bt. with the 12th and 13th, took part in the infamous ‘Battle of the Boar’s Head’, an attempt to pinch out a German salient at Richebourg as part of a diversionary action on the eve of the great Somme battle. In the annals of the regiment, this action is known as ‘The day Sussex died’. Within three hours 380 men were killed and over 1000 wounded. The idea of the Pals’ battalions seemed a good one during the jolly summer of 1914 when the boys were marching out to give the Boche a bloody nose and it would all be over by Christmas, but no one foresaw the effect of barbed wire and the Maxim gun. The loss of half a battalion in one action often saw the loss, at a stroke, of all the young manhood of a village, or a whole cricket team or, as on the action of the 30th of June, the loss of six pairs of brothers in three hours. The destroying of the Accrington and Sheffield Pals just down the road at Serre would see whole factory floors emptied in minutes. A few weeks before the Boar’s Head debacle Robert had the misfortune to find himself sitting atop a huge German mine which was duly exploded, killing those around him and leaving him buried, suffering ‘Mine shock’ at it was known, he kept his head and rallied the defence of the shattered line, seeing off the German attack. For his conduct he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal. We may surmise that in the long glorious autumn of 1914 he had reason to believe his youthful adventures with the army were behind him and he was looking forward to quiet family life in Vines Cross. The call of King and Country changed all that, no use trying to recount the grappling throat to throat with the Germans and the carnage and murder all about him to his little children and the mothers in the playground of Vines Cross School... With most of the original battalion already dead, Robert’s luck ran out on the 3rd of September whilst the remains of the 11th fought their way up the Ancre Valley at Beaumont Hamel. After their ordeal on the Somme the survivors were sent to Passchendaele in 1917, at the end of that hell the scanty remnants of Lowther’s Lambs were disbanded and dispersed to other regiments.

WELLBEING Robert Budd now lies buried in Villers-Bretonneux cemetery, incongruously, a farm hand from Vines Cross lying side by side with ANZACS in the shadow of the great Australian national memorial.
Kinesiology including cranial & visceral
The overseas Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries are some of the great glories and legacies of the Empire, it can be difficult sometimes from this side of the Channel to fully take in the sacrifices made but we would recommend to anybody to make the short trip to France to experience the scale and beauty and tranquility of these monuments and the sheer scale of it all, the author was astonished daily by the design and care lavished on them and the unique story told by each one. And to the informing of the youth? Well he now knows he can buy six fresh croissants for a Euro in the boulangerie in Peronne. We must say a big thank you to Mrs Nicola Walker, who has recently published an excellent book on our local war dead, ‘Here Dead We Lie’ and from which we take most of the research contained above. And also for her suggestions and corrections with the text. Picture of the Sutton brothers reproduced with kind permission of Shirley Reed.

It’s almost time for thoughts to turn to Bonfire Night, and warming drinks to keep the cold at bay. Mulled Cider is perfect at this time of year. Even its golden colour reminds you of autumn. This recipe is based on one from a newspaper, adapted over the years. It's easy and delicious. And if you make your own cider, it's remarkably cheap! If you don't have cider you can use, cheap shop-bought (sparkling or still) is fine. Sparkling will become still anyway, when heated. If you want to reduce the alcohol, increase the apple juice and reduce the cider, and/or leave out the brandy/calvados. Mulled Cider Recipe - makes about a litre Ingredients

0.75 litres of cider 200ml apple juice 2 tablespoons of sugar (more if you have a sweet tooth) a tot of brandy or calvados a dash of vanilla extract a small slice of root ginger, grated half a cinnamon stick 3 cardamom pods, crushed 1 clove 1 star anise - optional (because not everyone likes it. I don’t!) half an orange and half a lemon, cut into thin slices To garnish: sliced apples, rosemary sprigs, a sprinkle of cinnamon, cinnamon stick, star anise.... Method Put the cider, apple juice, brandy/calvados, vanilla extract, sugar plus any juice from the oranges and lemons, into a large saucepan. Gently heat until the sugar has dissolved. Then add everything else except the garnish. Turn off the heat and let the spices infuse into the liquid for a couple of hours or so. If cloves are not really your thing, fish it out after half an hour (if you can find it!). 20 minutes before you're ready to serve, strain the cider into another saucepan. Gently heat it again, then leave on a low heat to keep warm. Serve in glass mugs with a ladle, beautifully garnished. Alternatively, pour your lovely mulled cider into a flask to take out with you. November Gardening Diary
SERVICES
“If there’s ice in November that will bear a duck, there’ll be nothing after but sludge and muck.” The weather this month is rarely an incentive to work in the garden, but the abandonment of the garden to its own devices during the dark months is a great mistake as there is as always much to be done, right through winter. Autumn digging will have been started by Battle of Britain Day with the digging in of compost, manure and we hope shoddy too. This digging-over should be carried on and completed this month, no need to break down the clods as rain and frost over the winter will render the diggings down to a good workable condition. In the established border deep digging will not be possible, but a light forking between the shrubs will help to aerate the soil, whilst digging in any compost, dung, leaves and annual weeds will increase the humus content of the soil. All good things. This month is a good time to plant roses, fruit trees and ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs. It is surprising how much root they will make by Christmas if planted whilst there is still some warmth left in the soil. Firm staking is essential with any new planting and should never be an afterthought; moving roots are fatal to the prospects of newly planted trees and shrubs. Autumn bonfires, surely one of the great joys of gardening; A still and clear November morning, a crackling bonfire, a thermos of sweet tea and a long pipe is all that we wretched sinners may reasonably ask for. Having established working or even friendly relations with our non asthmatic or bronchial neighbours we should not feel guilty at spending a whole morning leaning on our rakes musing at the flames and breathing in the evocative scents of nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, benzene, particulates and the sundry other volatile organic compounds that make up that most comforting of autumn smells. Aside from the sheer idle enjoyment of it all, this is the only way to dispose of rose leaves with mildew or black spot, apple and pear leaves with scab, white fly on cabbage and Sprout leaves and blighted tomato and potato foliage. Putting such stuffs in the ‘Green bin’ may risk spreading disease around the county through the bags of compost thus sold on, likewise putting it on our own compost heaps ensures disease next year. We are told that composting creates Methane, a green house gas twenty times as effective as the Carbon dioxide released by a bonfire. The lawn may need some looking after at this time of year, we might aid drainage and increase aeration by easing any compaction; A garden fork pushed in half way and jerked backwards will effectively loosen the top layers, the lawn should be worked over in this way every six to eight inches, this may seem an onerous job and as we may still be wheezy from our morning by the bonfire, may be delegated to any under-employed youths we may uncover about the house or indeed any child deemed capable of hard labour. The collecting up of leaves continues apace, it is important to keep the bulk of them off the grass, especially sycamore and the larger leaves, a yellowing lawn heading into winter is not the thing. Real afficionados of leaf mould will keep the mould of years constantly moving from one bin to the next and exclude Sycamore and other big shiny leaves, but however you make it, though low in nutrients, the resulting mixture is a good conditioner of the soil, very useful for us South Saxons plodding about in our Sussex clay. Pruning of apples and pears should begin this month. We have not room enough here to go into all the methods of pruning but for those of us who are worried by the obscurities of pruning lore, first identify your tree and refer to the literature before sallying forth, genned up and armed with the secateurs; bush trees are frequently overpruned which results in jungles of new growth the following year but very little fruit, much better to cut back individual branches, either those dead, diseased or crossing than to cut back all the branches. Plums and cherries should not be pruned during the winter months because of the risk of silver leaf infection. If the weather is too inclement for outdoors work we may without guilt retire to the shed to sharpen and grease the tools. The mower should have done its work for the year, we may aim to see it serviced, oiled and safely in winter quarters by the beginning of Advent, thus easing the burden on the gentlemen who service them, averting the grumbling in Spring when the hordes descend, trunks full of mowers for immediate servicing.
