HORAM & VINES CROSS VILLAGE DIARY July 2022

Female led modern funeral directors five star reviews.

Dear Readers, Woah that was a hot Summer that lasted those 3 days from 15-17th of June! Let’s hope it returns for July, so the Horam Fun Day can come back with resounding success, after it’s hiatus because of Covid. For more information and to get involved see P14 for details. Thank you to all those that made the Horam Big Bash for the Platinum Jubliee such a fantastic day! See P x & x for pictures and coverage of the day. What with the increased cost of print & paper we have had to eschew the usual Development Update column in order to accommodate the coverage of this fantastic community event. But please be aware (as mentioned in the Horam Parish Council update this month) that even though the site opposite Rosemead (Old Orchard House/Southside) was dismissed by the government inspector in 2020 as an unsustainable and inappropriate site and a further application by the developers Chailey Homes was refused by Wealden in March this year for similar reasons, the developer has lodged an appeal against this decision to Wealden. Their agent Parker Best claim that the housing need trumps any prior decisions. Housing need should not trump an unsustainable and inappropriate site outside of the village boundary with poor drainage measures (the planning committee members expressed grave concern over drainage issues but were advised by planning officers not to have it recorded, as it would give grounds for an appeal) and transport links. Cauldavon the site diametrically opposite this site was refused in July 2021 for the same reasons. These reasons haven’t changed. The Council have asked government for housing numbers to be reduced to more sustainable levels - whilst developers continue to push for more fields to be concreted over. The appeal was only communicated to those who previously objected and objections were requested by 22 July 2022. We hope that the inspector assigned this case supports their colleagues prior decision, that the public benefit does not outweigh the adverse effect on the village of this site being developed.. Horam Parish Council are making good progress on the Neighbourhood Plan - see P25 for details. The local community speedwatch group are looking for new members, if you can spare the time please think about volunteering, it is a good deterrent to speeding and possible accidents resulting from it locally - see P20 for details. We hope that as the children break up for the school holidays and families look forward to long awaited holidays, that you all have a marvellous summer.

Supporting Local Families. Over the past two years local ladies Dawn Bew & Lucy Atabey have supported many local families after they have lost loved ones. White Feather Funerals is the only local, female led, independent funeral director in Heathfield and many families come to them - because they are ladies. They work with families to create unique and personal send offs - from Harry Potter themed funerals, garden funerals to live performances and art installations, high street processions with bonfire societies and fireworks, unusual hearses and beautiful horses. Their compassion and attention to detail help to make a difficult time, just a tiny bit easier.

Proud to have 21 verified 5

reviews.

Very passionate and nothing was too much to help me arrange. Dawn and Lucy are wonderful and showed so much empathy throughout. Mark the celebrant was amazing and listened to everything I advised to incorporate into the service Thank you so much you guys the support you gave me was excellent through this very difficult time. Exciting community news Are these Sussex words familiar to you? snork - neigh speckles - freckles squall - scream flintermouse - bat Horam Village Hall are excited be working with Dialect and Heritage Project, a National Lottery funded project based at the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture with 5 partner museums across the country, our local partner museum is the Weald and Downland Museum in Singleton. The aim of the project is to spread the word about the Survey of English Dialects which saw a group of field workers travel around over 300 rural villages in the 1950s in order to capture dialects and record the traditions of the area. Together they hope to celebrate language – past and present – and bring this archive collection, full of our dialect heritage, back into communities where it truly belongs. As part of the project they are also looking to update the survey and possibly get in touch with descendants of the original participants. Horam was one of the villages which took part in the original survey. The Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture (housed at Leeds University) holds a wealth of material related to the Survey and later work into folk culture – you can search the collection for yourself on the Leeds University Special Collections website if you are interested.

Note for your diary: Horam Village Hall will be holding an open day on Saturday 24th September with a free cream tea, where the project team will: · give a talk about the project and findings of the Survey of English dialects that took place in Horam · encourage participants to contribute their own dialect words and experiences to be stored as part of the updated survey. · have a stand with interactive material based on the rich archival material. · give you the opportunity to record updated responses to the survey The project leaders are particularly keen to get in touch with anyone who may remember the survey and/or their descendants. We have the participants names so please do get in touch if you are interested in finding out more. Please contact us if you are a local historian, care home manager or anyone who feels they can help spread the word to residents of Horam in 1950s. Amy Stone of Dialect and Heritage Project is really keen to meet and speak to as many people/groups from the village as possible, so please get in touch with Amy on 07521059113 / a.stone2@leeds.ac.uk or horamvillagehall@gmail.com. HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – July 2022 At the recent Finance meeting items for discussion were the Internal Audit Report and End of Year Accounts. Everything looks in order and compliant. Now for the External Audit. Horam Parish Council (HPC) are still getting feedback regarding the youngsters and some young adults misbehaving at the Skate Park and Play Park. The seesaw has had to be taken out of use as it has developed a fault. The seat on the zip wire was removed by vandals and we had the chain removed so younger people could not use it and perhaps damage themselves. There was an agenda item on June’s full Council meeting to try and decide a way forward. Please report any anti-social behaviour you may see by contacting 101. We have had more positive news on the broken glass. HPC are looking to get quotes for a new finger post and repairing a public footpath. There was great excitement from some quarters when the Land at Old Orchard, Horebeech Lane was turned down at Wealden District Council’s Planning Committee South (PCS). Sadly, that was short-lived as it has now gone to appeal. That was always going to happen. Just to add insult to injury there is now another application for 25 new dwellings in Chiddingly Road. When you read this the 20 selfbuild in Chiddingly Road would have gone to PCS for consideration. Please remember WDC do not send out letters to neighbours anymore, so be please on your guard. What an amazing day the Jubilee in Horam turned out to be. The weather was perfect, the Street Party for the children was well received, everyone behaved and had a nice time. The beacon lit up the night sky and the fireworks were splendid. Horam knows how to throw a party. Well done the organisers and helpers. A dry run for the Fun Day if one were needed. On a sour note, it was discovered late in the day there were at least 40 FAKE tickets, what for? It was not a football match and the total loss has not been calculated yet. We hope you are proud of yourselves! Thank you to Maynards Green school for their assistance in the poster competition for Horam Parish Neighbourhood Plan. The winners received their prize in the Horam Centre on the 10th May. Their ideas have been amalgamated into the main logo and looks fun with emphasis on the environment.

OUR HORAM PCSO – EMAIL ADDRESS If you wish to bring anything to the attention of our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for Horam (Cathy Gilling) please email catherine.gilling@sussex.police.uk. There is a dedicated email address (roads.communications@sussex.police.uk) for reporting instances of speeding. However, for emergencies contact the Police by phoning 999.

Neighbourhood Plan Logo competition As part of Horam's Neighbourhood Plan we ran a Poster Competetition at Maynards Green School. We asked the children for a drawing of what they thought the Parish might look like in the future. Prizes were awarded to the winners in each year group. Their entries were very impressive and had a strong emphasis on climate change and nature. The Logo for our NP has been designed from elements of their entries. Some of the words they used will be incorporated in the Neighbourhood Plan to strengthen messages around climate change and the efforts that have to be made to help address it. The NP Poster Competition prize giving took place on Friday 10th June 2022 at the Horam Centre. Virginia Roberts kindly handed out the prizes as Chair of HPC. The winners received a £20 book token, a laminated print of their entry and an exercise book with their entry and name on the cover. The runners up received a colouring book with crayon/pencils and confectionery. Both the winners and runners up received a photographic print of the logo. We would like to thank Maynards Green School for rolling out the competition and all the entrants for the thought and effort they put into designing their posters.

The winners were Erin, Hollie, Lily and Hattie

The runners up were Charlotte, Patrick , Tilly and Blissy

July Gardening Diary " St. Swithun's day if ye do rain, for forty days it will remain. St. Swithun's day if thou be fair, for forty days it'll rain no more." St Swithun was a down-to-earth Saxon bishop, venerated by all and especially by the common folk of England. He was constantly on the move; travelling to all corners of Saxon England on foot, giving alms and feasting the poor. Born during the reign of king Egbert and in his latter years tutoring the young prince Alfred, he became one of England's best loved saints. In keeping with his love of the common folk he requested was to be interred under the pavement outside Winchester cathedral: "Where it might be subject to the feet of passers-by and the drops of rain from on high". But in 971 his remains were brought inside the new cathedral to lie beside the Egg kings of Wessex, but not before the outraged saint had persuaded God to cast down a tremendous deluge upon the workmen opening up his grave. The legend of the forty days of rain may have some scientific basis as well; the jet stream will often have settled into a static position around the 15th of July, (The Saint's feast day); if it lies north of the British Isles we may count on a long period of continental high pressure, deflecting weather systems upon the heads of the Scots and the Viking North, and if to the south, Atlantic and northerly weather may prevail, giving a wet and dreary summer, though full of the life-giving rain that St Swithun so loved. The writer's face was rather egged last month; on bemoaning the six weeks of drought up until time of writing, the skies then opened for the succeeding ten days before the print went to press. The perils of printer's deadlines. So, back down at ground level we are aware that the gardener's work is never finished and even now, with the beds and borders in their full blaze of summer glory, a thought must be given to winter and to next season. Spring flowering bulbs should be lifted and such subjects as autumn flowering Crocuses may be planted to give them a good chance to develop their flowers. Any branches on plum trees showing signs of silverleaf disease should be cut out at once and burned. This disease causes a metallic silvering of the leaf and can quickly spread around the whole tree. It is usually fatal. Now is the time for final thinning of apples. If the king fruit ( The one in the middle of the cluster ) has not already been removed and there are other fruits to take its place, then it is these king fruits that should go. Pears, plums and even dessert cherries will all repay careful thinning if there has been a heavy set. In the vegetable garden the planting of brassicas should be pushed ahead just as quickly as ground becomes vacant. Continue to sow salads such as lettuce and radish for succession. A last sowing of French beans for a late crop may be made. Runner and French beans should be fed as they begin to make pods. Onions and shallots may be lifted and dried once the foliage starts to wither. And a fine sight they make hanging from the rafters in the shed. Celery must be watered frequently or it will bolt and run to seed. If the reader kept a bag of soot from last Autumn's chimney sweeping, as I'm sure we all did, a dusting of this makes an excellent deterrent to celery fly (One might try the local chimney sweep for supplies). Fruiting tomatoes should be fed regularly. This is a good time to gather herbs for drying, tied up in small bundles they make handsome companions to the knots of onions in the shed. Faded flower buds of Delphiniums, Lupins, and other early flowering perennials should be cut out before seed is set to encourage secondary growth. Roses too, should be regularly dead-headed. For autumn flowers of Lupins and Delphiniums, the plants should be cut down at the beginning of this month and watered with a liquid fertiliser. Cut grass makes an excellent mulch for carrot and spinach beds and around bush fruits, raspberries and Sweet peas, Lilies, Dahlias, Gladioli and other flowering plants, though not laid on too thick for fear of starving the soil of nitrogen. As roses come to the end of their first flush of flowering, they can be fed with a high potash fertiliser to boost the second lot of flowers. Dead-heading of all faded blooms should be carried out at every opportunity. Dahlias can be fed now but be careful to keep the feed well away from stems and leaves. Taller varieties should be securely staked. Towards the end of the month we may start propagating many shrubs. For lack of space I refer reader to the relevant literature for methods of propagation. Cuttings of Forsythia, flowering Currant, Escallonia, Weigela and Deutzia and many other subjects will all root easily. Whilst we may allow ourselves to sit back in the shed indulging in a long pipe and quiet ruminations over our onions and herbs so fragrantly drying in the rafters, with its soundtrack of cooing wood pigeons and on the wireless, the clatter of Indian and Boer wickets a-falling, we must still occasionally gird ourselves to keep the hoe going as often as hoers' elbow will allow. All borders should receive a vigorous stirring from the Dutch hoe at least every seven days.

Horam's Big Bash - what a brilliant day! Last month Horam did the queen proud with their Platinum Jubilee celebrations. After 10 months of planning and organising, everyone enjoyed the Jubilee ‘Big Bash’ and Beacon Lighting Ceremony and the weather was exceptionally kind! The event was exceptionally well attended, unfortunately to the extent that at least 43 event tickets were found to have been fraudulently photocopied! It put enormous pressure on the BBQ, causing longer than anticipated queues, with more burgers needing to be sourced, as the organisers had only catered for the ticket holders and helpers . It also meant that Steffi Mason spent extra time cooking on the BBQ, so was unable to do the kids face painting and party dancing. However Steffi told us aside from this, community spirit was in abundance when their BBQ packed in & they still had over 100 people to feed, 2 guests from the park ran and got their BBQs so they could carry on! She said that all the locals were absolutely lovely, supportive & understanding even though they had to wait over half an hour to be fed. The counterfeit tickets also impacted the bar, as they ran out of certain drinks too early, because again, they had only catered for the ticket numbers legally sold. We now know why the queues seemed endless! Aside from the challenges it presented, it also meant that the Horam Community Event Fund was down by at least £430.00 (the estimated cost of the ticket money and all the free food and drink supplied.) Chloe Dodson-Shanks proved to be the Platty Jubes top baker with this marvelous creation! Local people all came together to organise, set-up, provide entertainment and make sure everyone had a great day. No event would be possible without the help and support of volunteers. Therefore we would like to thank the following for helping make the Horam ‘Big Bash’ such a splendid event. In no particular order-Paul Sutton & 1st Horam Scouts, Sue Fletcher and helpers, Steffi Mason, Claire Read, Lesley Leppard, Andrew Leppard, Tina Killner, Ian Killner, The ladies of Horam WI, Kim Chatfield, Sheena Cane, Laura Strong, Devina Guyton, Sarah Holloway, Grace Holloway, George Holloway, Jo Brookbank, Jon Brookbank, Lou O’Kill, Bernie Wilkins, Darren Casey, Mandy Pearce , Janette Goss plus all the other helpers who joined in on the day whose names we have not got. And a big thank you to the artists and entertainment crew: The Jam Busters, Tilsmore, Lou O'Killl, Wine and Cake Club Choir, PJ Guy, Sue Sutton (Trumpeter), Issie Foster (piper), Leighton (Town Crier), Chris Roche (sound & lighting), Sarah Marsh (MC), Newick Bonfire Society and not forgetting Horam Motley Jubilee Choir. And a massive thank you to organisers - Art & Tricha Marsh and Dave Sutton!

WHAT’S ON IN THE COMMUNITY Young at Heart has had a busy time - we hosted a stand at the Heathfield Show which turned out to be a very social occasion with children from Little Tinkers Nursery School, past and present joining us for activities - lovely to see the childrens engagement and hearing the memories from those who have left! The weather was amazing and it was a truly successful day. We then hosted a Jubilee Day at Heathfield Park Cricket Club which we shared with the Cricket Club. Soft ball cricket was played, Rowana Mladek lead our Qigong session followed by Marco the Magician who entertained all the generations, Lucinda Muschialli hula hooped with members and children alike. A BBQ followed with Gino the Ice Cream Man joining us - this was a very popular visit as once again the weather was on our side. We were joined by Angela Brooks and Cake and Wine Club Choir for some Jubilee cheer for the afternoon - a huge array of cakes were served along with teas and coffees with the added bonus of the Club bar being open! A thoroughly enjoyable day for all! Nobody should be lonely - please contact Rachel Gibson 07971032667 - should you have friend or family who might be interested. Kindly sponsored by Wealden Funeral Services and Trevaskis Consulting Ltd.
