Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary May 2020
Dear Readers,
As I write this we are entering our 5th week of lockdown. We hope you and your families are keeping well in these difficult times. We decided to produce a May edition of the Diary because it is important to get information out to those in the village without access to the internet, so with the kind support of our advertisers, here it is (albeit a smaller number of pages than normal)! In this issue you will find information from the local support groups that are giving up their time and resources to help us all in these challenging times. So whether you need a prescription or shopping picked up, some on-line gym classes, some strategies to manage your mental health during this strange time, some digital socialising – pub quizzes, someone at the end of the phone, the list goes on. So, be kind to yourself and others while we all try and navigate this challenge together. Kind regards,

Preventing Separation problems Trainers and behaviourists are expecting a few dogs may be presenting with separation anxiety problems when the lock down is lifted and normal life resumes. They have been with their owners 24/7! It is comforting to have a pet to share this time with, especially if you live alone. However it’s important that you do not let your dog become so reliant on your presence that when you return to work, or start to leave the house again, it becomes a problem for them. There are a few things you can do to prepare them. • Reduce your dog’s dependence on you, taking into consideration of all your dog’s senses. Behind a baby gate, your dog can still see and hear you, but can’t touch you. Behind a closed door with a radio on, and you chatting or singing he can hear you but not see you or touch you. Make sure your dog has a bed of his own, and encourage him to use it sometimes and not always be cuddled up next to you. Build up slowly to times when your dog cannot see or hear you. • Prevent your dog following you everywhere. Shut the door when you go to the bathroom! • If more than one person lives in your house, encourage everyone to feed, play and spend time with your dog, reducing his dependence on one person. • Give your dog a chew toy such as a Kong for limited, random amounts of time, whilst he is in his bed. Ignore him completely while he is chewing. After about a week, give your dog a signal that it is “chew time” and start to move around the house while he is busy or go to a different room. Make sure the Kong is a special treat and don’t leave it lying around. • Try to keep the same routine with your dog that you would have if you were working, so if you work in the mornings, make sure your dog settles down by himself during this time. Hopefully your dog will be company for you, but not develop an over dependence on your presence during this difficult time. Stay safe everyone.

Horam, the war & VE Day
The first week of May 1945 witnessed the final convulsions of the war in Europe, with The Austrian Corporal and his bride dead in the Fuhrerbunker, the Soviet Guards armies under Vasily Chuikov, the ruthless defender of Stalingrad bulldozing over the Zeelow Heights and into Berlin in an orgy of rape and revenge. Monty's British armies sweeping all before them in their drive across the North German plains, and on May 8th came the final surrender of all Axis forces in Europe. The news brought wide-spread celebrations and joy to the streets of Allied cities, whilst the Canadians indulged in huge riots and the looting of 600 liquor stores, the local papers in Sussex reported 'Extended jollification', with the hanging out of flags and bunting, dogs seen trotting along wearing huge tri-coloured bows and numerous spontaneous renderings of 'God Save The King'. Children in Vines Cross school were entertained with athletic contests, tea and 'a conjuring entertainment' with the children thoroughly enjoying themselves. Arrived home were POW's Edmund Baldy, Montague Champion Jones and Percy Hobden. Names evocative of old England! Trawling through the newspapers of the time the impression one gets of that week was of a great out-pouring of relief through joy but always tempered with the knowledge that the war was very far from finished, with whole British armies still in battle contact with the 'Yellow Peril'. The Japanese had shown that fatalistic oriental courage that the armies of Western democratic societies found so hard to beat. The belief was that possibly another two years were needed to eject the Japanese from every archipelago in the Pacific and the home islands and at a greater cost in lives than in the European war. Preparations for Little Boy and Big Boy and the flight of the Enola Gay were unknown and unimagined. Indeed when the writer was tracking down eye-witness accounts of VE Day, one of his subjects, an old soldier of colossal vintage told him ' Sorry old boy, can't help, I was still in the Far East bashing the Japs.' A thoroughly interesting and entertaining account of a local family's experience was sent to the diary by Steve Ziegler, son of Gladys Ziegler, nee Funnell. Gladys lived with her family in Waldron and was employed, aged sixteen in making fuel tanks for Spitfires near Tanners Manor. With East Sussex in the thick of it, the family frequently took to the Anderson shelter, Curly the dog bagging best place at the first peep of the siren. In 1940 Possingworth Manor became the home for The Alconquines 2nd French Canadian Division.

Horam, the war & VE Day
Along with many other local girls, she took a great interest in the colonial soldiers and started stepping out with a soldier named Jonnie (who was sadly killed in the Dieppe Raid). All North American soldiers were lumped together under the description of 'over paid, over sexed and over here' and the Canadians of Waldron were no exception, leading to frequent dust-ups outside The Star public house. After Jonnie's death, Gladys and her sister took work at the Croydon aerodrome and as with tens of thousands of others, flocked to the Mall for the VE Day celebrations. Gladys was duly crushed in the crowd and had to be rescued by fellow revellers. Meanwhile back in Waldron the rest of the family with Curly the dog, took to The Star to toast victory with a small Burton ale, wartime blackcurrant concentrate and packets of crisps.
Gladys eventually returned home. At this time Possingworth Manor became full of returning soldiers from Italy, to eventually be demobbed and dispersed. It would be the same camp that Gladys would meet Steve's father, George Ziegler after he returned from fighting at the terrible battle for Monti Casino. Lockdown Ramblings
16
The endless torrents and biblical deluges of winter finally ended with one last great spasm of rain on March the 5th. The present writer was delighted to find his rain gauge recording 1.6 inches of rain (40mm if you are French) and instructed his children to duly note the figure in their rainfall charts. March being the start of the outdoor year for myriads of ramblers, birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts also saw the beginning of the great lockdown, leaving so many gnashing their teeth at lost opportunities, and not only fans of Liverpool Football Club either. Whilst exercise for the sake of such activities as birdwatching, nature observation and painting were to be strictly verboten, we were instructed that daily exercise would be tolerated and a good thing too as the lockdown has so far coincided with a prolonged period of high pressure; to have this latest Chinese export here in earnest from December or January would have been unthinkable. The present observer has been walking his dog on a loop from Horebeech Lane to Vines Cross, west to Hidden Spring Vineyard and back across the fields of Diamond's Farm early on most mornings of the lockdown and finds he has had an unparalled opportunity to observe the great awakening. Firstly of course, one is delighted by the primroses on the banks and in the ditches. The great glory of the woodlands in March and early April is the wood anemone, a blanket of white stars luminous in the gloom of the woods. These were past their best by the Ides of April and were slowly superceded by the bluebell, really a plant of May, the writer sadly shook his head at the ever advancing seasons, as when one is presented with a hot cross bun before Good Friday. Premature bluebells aside, the great glory of early morning walks at this time must be the dawn chorus. During late March and April it consists mainly of sedentary british citizens, the great tit, Parus major, the blue tit, Parus caeruleus, the chaffinch, Fringella coelebs, the blackbird, Turdus merula, the song thrush, Turdus philomenus and rising above all, the staccato shoutings of the mistle thrush, pleasingly known as the storm cock. Heard accompanying all this from one spot on the walk were sundry other woodland sounds; the cawings of various corvids, angry churrings of startled squirrels ( North American invaders, not pretty pointy eared British types) and that most evocative sound of greater spotted woodpeckers, Dendrocopos major, drumming furiously on dead boughs to establish their territory, an echoing medieval sound to take one straight to a twelth century woodland, complete with Norman rotter and his hunting retinue and hidden Saxon villeins risking their lives for a coney. Just as dog and man were leaving the woods they were stopped dead by that landmark sound of Spring, the call of the cuckoo, Cuculus canorus. A curate's egg of a sound if ever there was one; whilst ushering in Springtime for many, it also represents an outrage to motherhood and morality in general. After such musings the Cuckmere tributary on Diamond's Farm was crossed and the far hill breasted as a great mewing and shrieking above revealed a tremendous wake of buzzards, Buteo buteo, wheeling in the early thermals, eleven being counted together, the writer's record for the district. This same wake a few days later appeared to tolerate an interloping red kite, Milvus milvus. The Reader's Digest book of British birds recorded only twenty breeding pairs in 1977 and those confined beyond Offa's Dyke. Along with many other species of bird in Britain, they have made an astonishing recovery over the last twenty years. P.S. Thou shalt not eat bats.

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE
I did consider leaving out the planning update this month, because let’s face it, some more houses in Horam hardly ranks up there as important during the bigger challenges the village, nation & world are facing right now. But on reflection, felt that it was relevant. During lockdown with the work on the Rosemead site stopped, we have experienced the quietness, the birdsong, the noise of the ewes & their lambs, the cock crowing and the hens clucking. It has felt like it did when we first moved to Horam 18 years ago and it has been glorious. But I understand this is just an aberration in the face of progress and that once all this is over we will be returned to business as usual, with Southside (opposite Rosemead/58 homes) winning at appeal and the latest application for Cauldavon (abutting Rosemead to the east/60 houses) getting approval. This means that within a ¼ mile on Horebeech Lane, there will be 241 new homes. Without a local plan Wealden are on the back foot with developers and Rosemead has already set a precedent. If that sounds like someone who has given up, then I am sorry, I have misled you. I haven’t given up on less pollution, less light pollution, less wildlife, less oxygen - with trees making way for houses. I don’t want more traffic, more congestion, parents having to drive their children to school because the local school is full, to hang on the phone of a morning to secure a Dr’s appointment, to watch as no investment is made to the infrastructure to support all these new households. Southern Water have taken legal action against Bovis for consistently jamming their pump with silt & concrete running off site and into the drainage system, resulting in the sewage pumping station opposite Rosemead being regularly overwhelmed. After this lockdown the government will be desperate to get the economy going again, and housebuilding is it’s cornerstone for tax & income generation. The market may flounder for a while, but it won’t stop it in it’s tracks. So if you care about the countryside, please lodge your comments on the Cauldavon planning application. It may feel like shouting into the wind, but at least you will know you did something. You will note on the Cauldavon application, that is made on behalf of the owner by a company called Welbeck based in London. Welbeck don't build houses, they are just ‘land sharks’ so are unlikely to have taken an option on the land. They are more likely to have signed an agreement with the landowner that involves them applying for planning permission and when this is granted, they will "help" the landowner to sell the land to a housebuilder and take a percentage of that sale price. Thus, Welbeck's only exposure is the sum they have paid the landowner (a few tens of thousands) and the cost of applying for permission. Against that, they will grab say 20 - 30%* of the price received for the land, which could be about £6m. So, for an outlay of say, £300k*, they could get £1.5m* back. *Estimated figures only. Planning application No: WD/2020/0368/MAO Notes for responses: - the land at Cauldavon features in WDC’s SHELAA report Jan 2019 under 2 references, 889/3030 for the strip abutting Laundry Lane and 830/3030 for the site where the house currently is and the field behind, that abutts Rosemead. Both are classified by Wealden as ‘suitable for housing’ and states ‘additional transport assessments would be required to assess impact development would have on the wider road network to establish a suitable access either from Horebeech Lane or the adjacent site (Rosemead), which has planning permission’. Which may explain why Bovis have yet to plant up the Rosemead boundary with this site as stated in their planning permission. - currently with the collapse of the Local Plan, planning officers should be using the existing village boundary, Cauldavon does not fall within this. - an entrance to this estate just after a sharp bend in a 60 mile an hour speed limit is dangerous.
18
- Broad Oak school has closed & nearest primary is over subscribed (Maynards Green).
LOCAL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE - East Sussex Highways will say more street lighting for new entrance directly contradicting Wealden Dark Skies policy. - ask how planning apps will be dealt with during Covid 19 lockdown? - usual infrastructure issues e.g. Southern Water are currently suing Bovis for continually blocking their pump on Horebeech Lane and making it break so they have to keep emptying the tank and fixing the pump. Silted water running offsite has been the culprit. - the very recent flooding on this road has demonstrated that run off of the RM site is a big challenge, diverting the water elsewhere will result in flooding to existing housing and 3 large sites in this quarter of a mile stretch will surely overwhelm the water course by the Cuckoo Trail that water is currently being diverted to? - the application advises connection to mains sewerage, currently none of houses in this clump around Cauldavon are connected to the mains. How will this work? Southern Water said Rosemead would overwhelm the current sewage infrastructure without considerable additional infrastructure, how can the system support Southside & Cauldavon too? - traffic on Horebeech Lane? Pollution levels will rise regardless of the electrical charge points, bike parking and proximity to the Cuckoo trail that the app will detail. There is no big employer nearby, so commuting from these estates will be high. * SHELAA details land offered up for development to WDC. Lucy Atabey, Editor 19

May Gardening Diary ' A wet and windy May fills the barns with corn and hay. ' We are informed that May is statistically one of the driest months of the year, when damp westerly airstreams are less common, this anticyclonic weather may lead to night frosts and May frosts are the bane of all gardeners. Really tender subjects like dahlias, begonias, cannas, etc, may be best planted nearer the end of the month. In the borders and vegetable garden, routine hoeing should be carried on. At the risk of becoming a hoe bore, the value of a Dutch hoe cannot be overstated; Regular hoeing destroys weeds, loosens compaction, aerates the soil and breaks up the capillary action and so reduces evaporation. The borders are left looking fresh and shipshape. A hoe vigorously plied is one of the great aids to good growth. For those gardeners with 'Hoers' Elbow', the alternative is the mulch. The main rules are that it should be laid deep, at least four inches and away from any stems, the ground should have first had a thorough soaking (from rain, not hose), this locked-away moisture may be retained for a considerable time. Any raw or uncomposted material should be avoided. Green waste, wood shavings, straw or wood bark, when used fresh may lead to denitrification of the soil. Yes, bacteria in the soil which usually convert nitrogen into useable nitrates can become starved of oxygen and so are forced to separate the oxygen molecules from the soil-bound nitrates, which are then lost to the atmosphere, we write this not only to appear clever and well-read, it really does happen, especially on undug slightly acid soil, that being just what we have here in our corner of the county. If mulch you must, then a thorough digging-over and removal of perennial weeds followed by a dressing of nitrogen should be carried out first. In the veg. patch it is important to thin previously sown crops, this job brooks no delay; overcrowding in the nursery can weaken and distend plants to such a degree that they may never fully recover their figures, their health and their vigour. This is the beginning of the season proper for the biting and sucking pests, since the EU has scotched the more effective sprays and chemicals, so that our old favourites DDT, arsenic and Agent Orange are no longer available, alternatives should be found to keep pests down. We hear talk of garlic sprays... Strawberry beds may be matted or have straw laid down and runners not required for propagation may be removed as they develop. We may now sow seeds of French and runner beans in those deep compost filled trenches the reader prepared in March. Peas, carrots, parsnip, lettuce, radish and spinach may also be sown now. Brussels sprouts need a long season to fully develop so the quicker they can be transplanted to their permanent quarters the better.

May Gardening Diary Brassicas always planted firmly. It is customary to pinch out the tops of broad beans when in flower, this should greatly reduce the black fly problem, especially on those plants which weren't started off last October. Early potatoes should be earthed up little and often. Rhododendrons and azaleas may have any dead flowers picked off to allow new growth to form. Any pruning here must be carried out immediately after flowering and before next year's flower buds form. As daffodils and other early flowering bulbs finish flowering it is as well to remove dead flowers to prevent seed formation and encourage the growth of bulbs. Irksome and unsightly obstacles to our mowers they may be, but the dying foliage must be allowed to wither in its own time. Any remaining pruning of forsythia may now be completed, leaving the youngest shoots, as they will bear the best blooms next year. We are advised not to ' Cast a clout 'till May is out ', there is confusion over this saying; it might refer to the month itself or that we must not cast any clouts until the May Tree (hawthorn) is out, during the months of May and June, either way, we may be mindful of the possibility of late and damaging frosts. We may also gain some postponement of that finest sight of Spring, namely the first sightings of the semi-naked, tattooed and egg-white young gentlemen strutting up Horam High Street.
