White Feather FUNERALS
Proud to have 23 verified 5 reviews. Female led, independent funeral director. Supporting and empowering you in celebrating a loved one’s life, at the end of their life, however you choose.

Traditional to contemporary and everything else in between. Independent personal service. Transparent and open minded.
Lucy and Dawn at White Feather were excellent in all aspects of organising my dad’s funeral. Due to family coming from abroad we needed to arrange things quickly. From our first meeting I found Lucy’s compassion and understanding, and easy character, gave me confidence that everything would be arranged efficiently and to a high standard, which it was. I chose White Feather Funerals as I loved the fact it was female led, and as dad had been cared for by 5 female carers at home, felt it was fit ting that his final journey be conducted by ladies. I would not hesitate to recommend Lucy and Dawn to anyone seeking a truly compassionate, efficient, and down to earth team. Thank you so much White Feather. Mrs A
This year sees the first display in Heathfield by Heathfield Bonfire Society for many years. So, it is really important that it is a well attended event locally, as aside from a great night out, it raises funds for the following year and it would be great to have a local display back every year. See P39 for more details on the Heathfield bonfire and other local displays.
Last month saw the very sad passing of our Queen, a momentous occasion in many lives. It can feel strange to feel grief for someone you didn’t really know, but it can also trigger grief from those you have known, loved and lost. Next month, White Feather Funerals will be running a memorial service for all of the families they have looked after in the last couple of years with an open invite to the community to join them and remember someone dear to them - see P4 for more details.
Are you making use of the monthly Repair Café in Horam? Local experts give up their time to fix the things you don’t want to throw away, so why not give them a go? See P18 for details.
Thank you to all of those who wrote to Wealden District Council about the planning application to extend the Rosemead estate and signed the petition against the further loss of green fields - see P42 for the usual monthly development update. Don’t miss Horam Parish Council’s consultation day at the Horam Village Hall on Saturday 15th October from 10.00am to 5.00pm to show the progress of their Neighbourhood Plan and for you to give your feedback. See P24 for more detail.
Make the most of Lakeside Cafe’s winter opening from Wednesdays to Sundays, see P19 for details about what’s on!
Don’t forget, the clocks go back on Sunday 30th October - the clock on my car dashboard will finally show the right time for the next six months!
Kind regards,

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN -
Saturday 15th October, 10.00am to 5.00pm at Horam Village Hall
In 2011 there were 1,155 dwellings in our Parish, in the last 11 years another 680 have been built, granted planning permission or are in planning applications already submitted The need for a Neigh bourhood Plan is even more pressing; however we have to be able to demonstrate to external assessors that the plan is influenced by your (the residents) feelings and opinions about the future of the Parish. Horam Parish Council are holding a consultation day at the Horam Village Hall on Saturday 15th October from 10.00am to 5.00pm to show the progress of our Neigh bourhood Plan and for you to give your feedback. We need as many residents as possible to attend this consultation to give us this feedback. Refreshments will be available. Please help us to shape the future of where we live or it will continue to be decided elsewhere.
POP UP YOUTH HUB
The first week of the Pop Up Youth Hub began on the 12th September in the Village Hall car park. This project is funded by Horam Parish Council. The feedback will give guidance on the way forward to try and reduce the anti-social behaviour in our PARISH. A polite reminder, to report all ASB to the police on 101@sussex.police.uk
WATER
During planning meetings members have expressed their ongoing concerns regarding the actions of Southern Water pumping sewage into the sea with what seems little regard for the environment and human health. HPC have written to OFwat and continue to challenge Wealden District Council.
FOOTPATH NO. 11
HPC is pleased to report that it funded a section of a public footpath from the corner of Laundry Lane. This was waterlogged through wet spells and we now hope that this problem has been solved.
CLOSURE OF POST OFFICE
We have received Official Notification that the outreach post office for HORAM and elsewhere has ceased.

OCTOBER GARDENING DIARY
' For every fog in October, a snow in winter.'
Rain, wind and cloud often characterise our weather in October, though we may hope for an Indian summer about the middle of the month when a short spell of mellow anticyclonic weather often occurs. We should be taking full advantage of these gentle spells to finish up our autumn digging. Deadline Trafalgar Day.
Weeds make a strong showing in autumn, so that hoe should be doing brisk work; for great mis chief they will do if left unchecked at this late season. We may now make a start with tidying up the perennials in the herbaceous border, some garden ers prefer to leave the old topgrowth on the plant for winter protection whilst some like to clear away the old growth once flowering is finished, leaving to leave a more shipshape and tidy border. A tidier border feels healthier and less prone to harbouring disease and mould over the winter and also allows the soil to be more effectively forked over, though this removal of the top cover give less protection from frost.
Dahlias may be lifted once the foliage has blackened, there is little point in leaving them in beyond the end of the month as tuber growth will be completed by then.
Around the middle of the month we can may start planting out wallflowers, polyanthus, forget-menots, Sweet Williams, Canterbury bells, foxgloves and other similar plants which are grown as biennials or for a spring bedding display. Before putting these in, the soil should be dug to a spade’s depth. Fertiliser may be added but only of the slow releasing types, i.e bone meal and not a quick release nitrogen based spring or summer fertiliser.
The last cut of the lawn will now take place, the blade height may be lifted; no golfing green cuts in October.
The vegetable plot. Push ahead with autumn digging. We dwelt on dung and his cousins at length in the last issue but it is worth reminding ourselves again that September and October are the months to dig in old horse droppings or compost, especially important for brassicas, not too much for the root crops or you may end up with amusingly shaped vegetables next year. Bastard trench heavy ground, throwing in newspaper, Christmas jumpers, gossip magazines, sharp sand, compost and rats; anything to improve the texture and workability of our clay. Only after a morning of bastard trenching may we, without guilt or self-reproach, indulge in that long pipe in the potting shed. Make the most of the last of the Runner and French beans by picking all sizeable beans daily, especially if frost is forecast. Autumn sown broad beans are a must, a sturdy two inch bean plant seen pushing through at Christmas makes a happy sight and bodes well for an early and black fly resistant crop in spring. In anticipation of rain and gale, it is very important to firmly stake Brussels sprouts. All brassicas need to be firmly planted; they greatly resent any movement or looseness around the roots. Top growth of Jerusalem artichokes can be cut down but no need to lift the roots as they may be dug as required. Beware of a surfeit of this root in polite company. Sites for November planting of fruit trees may be thoroughly prepared now by digging in plenty of old manure with a handful of bonemeal. It pays to do this well in advance of planting to allow the mix to fester down and the air to escape, likewise new rose beds should be thoroughly prepared, especially so on our clay soil. Rambler roses may now be pruned and trained, the aim is to cut out as much of the growth that has already flowered, those that make strong growth from the base should have the old stems cut out at ground level whilst those which make little basal growth should have the old growth cut back to a point just above that at which the strong new growth starts.
Now that the cricket season is over we may bestir ourselves to switch off the wireless set, knock out our pipes, end our ruminations over the onions drying in the shed and get out into the garden, there are jobs to do wherever we look and we are losing three minutes of light a day, so we can ill afford any tardiness in the garden.
Bonfire is back this year!!
Following the procession in 2019, Heathfield District & Bonfire Society are back with a bang on Saturday 22nd October. After a year of hard graft and fundraising events, they are putting the finish ing touches to what promises to be the highlight of 2022 for Heathfield. With a torchlight procession followed by bonfire and display at Sheepsetting Lane, this will be an excellent night for the town. Programmes will be available to buy this month in shops in Heathfield. For full details please visit their website or Facebook page. Website link: http://www.heathfieldbonfiresociety.co.uk/event-info/ Facebook page link: https://www.facebook.com/heathfieldbonfiresociety/ Other firework displays this month & next locally: Hailsham Saturday 15th October, Cowbeech Friday 28th October, Battle Saturday 5th November, East Hoathly & Halland Sat 12th November.

RESIDENTS HAVE HAD ENOUGH
On 3rd August 2022 Wealden District Council launched a new survey for residents to shape their new corporate plan called The Future of Wealden. I have only seen exposure on-line, not had anything through the post, have you? The consultation closed on 30th September so as you read this you will be too late to share your views. If you see any of Wealden’s social media posts, you will have seen the ma jority of comments made by residents are negative about the over development of Wealden.
As you will note from last month’s update, residents aren’t against housing development, it just needs to be sustainable and affordable. In the last three years Wealden has built NO social housing but currently has over 4399 dwellings approved to be built in the district. On a recent post about the consultation invit ing resident’s views on the future of Wealden, a resident wrote exactly what a lot of us are thinking:
“I have - big question is are you listening to people’s thoughts?
Almost every post you put up contains comments that bemoan the way the district is being overdevel oped & planning is being run by developers, not planners. Are you really listening, or just paying lip service? As for the consultation, there seems to be a huge bias in your questions here. It’s all geared to answers that will support continued and excessive overdevelopment of the district, with very little thought for the consequences.
Where is the focus on well-being? Where is the focus on the way resident’s mental health is being af fected by the rate of change being enforced on small communities? Where are you looking to interact with Parish Councils or local groups that have genuine concerns? Where is the focus on infrastructure. It’s pointless trying to be carbon neutral when you insist on plonking large urban estates in places where there is no public transport. The roads are becoming more clogged with traffic & dangerous; we need slower, safer, better roads. What about health - have you tried getting accepted as a NHS patient at a dentist? The doctors are completely over capacity and we are now waiting 7 days for a prescription due to the demand on the poor overworked workers at surgeries! How’s water getting on? We can barely sup port the current population without more strain being placed on our at capacity utilities. Any idea where kids might go to school? Because the local village schools in many small villages that you are trying to turn into towns cannot cope, so kids are going to school miles away…needing car transport to get there.
How about protecting productive farmland and refusing to build anywhere that has been productively farmed, rather than covering it with concrete that will exacerbate the flooding, reduce bio-diversity and have an irreversible effect on the delicate ecological balance?
When you start to focus on the well-being and mid-long term affects all the housing will have on our com munities, when you listen to the depression that is felt by many as their way of life is being eroded, when you realise that you are ripping the soul out of the district, then perhaps we will have a plan that benefits all. Right now, all the focus is on money, revenue, replacing lost funding from central govt…& of course we understand that for many services funds are not available. But the way you are headed, is a very dangerous downwards spiral.”
Thank you to all the residents, who have objected to the application to merge Horam into Marle Green, by extending the Rosemead estate on Horebeech Lane right up to Laundry Lane (WD/2022/1694/MAO). As this column is written nearly 100 objections have been submitted to Wealden and over 364 local people have signed the resident’s petition which has also been submitted to Wealden.

WHAT’S ON IN THE COMMUNITY
Young at Heart kicked off with a stand at Le Marche - a wonderful event which makes you feel proud to be part of the community - if you have never been it’s well worth going and occurs on the bank holiday weekend in August. We restarted at the Club on 6th September welcoming old and new members - so good to be together again after the August break. Coffee time was very chatty with everyone catching up on news! Cherry Spring Studio kindly organised our morning craft and Marco the Magician joined us in the afternoon - he’s hugely talented at entertaining all age groups with his magic and singing. On Thursday we hosted Qigong followed by the brilliant Angela Brookes supported by Cake and Wine Club Choir. Little Tinkers Nursery School joined us in the afternoon. Today we have had Jayne Torville joining us to tell of her Olympic experience and the fun of working on Dancing on Ice, joined by Punnets Town Primary School. Incredible talent on our doorstep! Nobody should be lonely! Please contact Rachel 07971032667 if you have a friend/family member who might be interested! Kindly sponsored by Wealden Funeral Services and Trevaskis Consulting Ltd.
