Welcome to May, we hope that the last couple of weeks of step 1 of restriction lifting has made life more bearable for you? Have you braved the outside/inside a tent at your local pub yet? Were you keen enough to queue for a pint at 12:01am on the 12th April? Let's hope as May progresses mother nature brings us some more clement weather in order to be able to spend time in a pub garden without getting a bad case of frostbite! Seriously though, we should all just layer up and go anyway to support these local businesses after the tough year they have had. Were you queuing outside Farrago to stock up on bamboo socks or at Trading For You, The Factory Shop and Heathfield Ironmongers to replace all the pots and pans you have worn out by baking & cooking during these long, long months? We hope that you have been visiting all of the Horam & Heathfield local shops, cafes, hairdressers. I had my hair cut on the 12th April and it was absolute bliss. Thinking of all of those hairdressers and their sore feet and backs, as they fight to meet the pent up demand from their very hairy customers! We wish all our local businesses the best as they reopen and commence trade after such a prolonged time in limbo. We applaud those new local businesses starting up too - local lady Sally Bennett has just launched her new nursery equipment cleaning company Prim Prams by Nana to help out those busy local mums! We also are sad to see the closure of the Horam Natural Therapy Centre at the end of this month and thank Galit and her team of therapists for supporting the community and it’s health needs over so many years. This month sees local elections on Thursday 6th May for councillors to represent Wealden East at East Sussex County Council and elections for Wealden District Council for Heathfield North & South. Please see P44 - 45 for manifesto's from the party candidates looking to be your voice. We also bid a sad farewell to two well loved locals in this issue - you may have frequented Keith Irwin's hardware shop on the High Street many years back or, stopped regularly in the High Street for a natter with the lovely Kath Smith? Take care to follow the guidelines of each phase for our return to normality, it may seem tiresome but none of us want another lockdown. A fond farewell to two much loved residents Last month we said goodbye to another one of Horam's much loved residents, Kathleen Smith. She was the kindest, sweetest lady with a lovely twinkle in her eyes and everyone that knew her will be missing that twinkle. Kathleen Croft was born in 1933 in Bodle Street Green. She had five siblings, though one child died in infancy. Her Dad was a well digger and also worked the land and woods.She attended school in Herstmonceux and after school worked at the castle there, as a maid and then at Amberstone Hospital as an auxiliary nurse. After she married she took on the role of housewife and mother to her three children Kevin, Julie & Glen. We asked her eldest son Kevin how he would describe her to someone who didn't know her and he said she was very gentle, kind and loving, compassionate and emotional, always interested in others and she loved a good giggle! She attended Christ Church on Horebeech Lane for 60 years and that is where I was lucky enough to meet her. PJ Guy, the vicar at Christ Church said “Kathleen Smith was a dear member of Christ Church Horam for almost 60 years. She was much loved by all, making everyone feel that they were her special friend. Kathleen was devoted to meeting each week to worship with her church family and had a real, living relationship with Jesus, her Lord and Saviour. It was her faith in Jesus that enabled Kath to face her death without fear, confident that when the time came, her Good Shepherd would take her home to be with him in eternity. She was a dear sister, and she will be greatly missed, but we all take comfort in the knowledge that she is now with her Lord, which is better by far.” We miss you Kath and are so grateful for the sunshine you brought into our lives. Keith Irwin and his family moved from Orpington to Horam in October 1976 to run and live above the Horam Hardware business in the premises that is now the Horam Parish Council office. As Keith had spent his working life prior to this in Gamages (a large departmental store in London) and following this other businesses such as Medhursts /The Co-Op and Allders he was well suited to serving customers. Keith, his wife at the time Gillian, and their two sons Phil and Clive all worked in the shop at times over the years. Keith was known for his helpfulness. Customers would come in wanting, “one washer like this one” or “ a bolt this size” and he would rummage around and invariably return with exactly the item required. Keith enjoyed serving customers and told many stories over the years including an attempted shop lifting (one individual tried to conceal a large spanner in his boot), a few celebrity regulars or people arriving with a treat for Rex, the family Alsatian who used to sit on the outside step and watch the world go by. We are sure that as Keith often struggled to hear, there were several people who may have wanted four candles but went away with fork handles. It was that kind of shop. He retired from the hardware business in 2001 after 25 enjoyable years. Keith continued to live in the Heathfield area until his death on 24th February 2021 at the age of 84. Philip Irwin

HIS LAST ACT OF KINDNESS Over 13.6 million people watched The Duke Of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip's funeral. It was widely agreed that is was a beautiful, poignant and elegant service with very little fuss, befitting the Prince who hated any 'faff'. From the Land Rover hearse he specifically designed for purpose to the carefully chosen readings, hymns and music, this moving send off was a unique reflection of who he was. Having had Philip at her side for 73 years the Queen would have consulted him on many decisions she has made. How tender and kind was this parting gesture to his lifelong partner and soulmate, to organise and decide on the detail of his own funeral? It shows great thoughtfulness that he spared her in her grief from making what can often be difficult decisions. Organising a loved one's funeral can be a heavy burden to bear, especially as you struggle with the shock and sadness that their death brings. It can be very stressful to get different family members to agree on the things your loved one would have wanted, especially if you had never had that conversation with them whilst they were still alive. We applaud Prince Phillip for showing the world the difference planning ahead can make. As we watched in heartbreak as the Queen sat alone at her husband's funeral, it brings some comfort to know that he took the extra burden of organising his funeral off of her shoulders. We see first hand the distress disagreements about details for a funeral can bring and also how some families struggle to meet the costs for a funeral. We believe it shows great kindness and foresight to plan and pay for your funeral in advance. That way no-one is placed in the position of referee, has the burden of making important decisions or has worry about how they are going to pay for the funeral. HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – May 2021 HORAM PLAY AREA, SKATE PARK AND THIRD AGE EQUIPMENT The play park and skate park continue to be very busy and users are reminded to keep to social distancing regulations, wear a face mask and use hand sanitiser. Users are also reminded to take their litter home with them, or if not possible, use the litter bins provided. Please be considerate for ALL users. Drainage works to help alleviate the flooding in the play park will take place late September after the children return to school. The play park is likely to be closed for up to three weeks whilst the work is carried out. These works will be paid for by Horam Parish Council using their Community Infrastructure (CIL) funds. Improvement to the footpaths and verges in Horebeech Lane and on the A267 in front of the village hall have all been completed. These works were paid for by the Parish Council using their CIL monies. ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING Because of recent legislation introduced by the Government regarding the holding of virtual meetings, Annual Council has been brought forward to Wednesday, 5th May 2021. HORAM PARISH COUNCIL All the vacancies have all been filled and the Parish Council has a full complement of eleven members. COMMUNITY Another busy month at Young at Heart! The introduction of Yoga has been a huge success. We are now trying out Qigong with the brilliant Rowanna similar moves to Yoga - very relaxing! Our Bingo sessions have been joined by Little Tinkers Nursery School via Zoom. Wonderful for our members to see the children’s happy faces. Angela Brookes continues to “wow” us each week with her fantastic enthusiasm for singing everyone’s favourite songs giving everyone the opportunity to sing and dance along! Crafts have included flower arranging, Mandala rock art, Easter wreaths and hot cross buns. We were visited by week old lambs at Easter time who were loved by all! May Gardening Diary ' A wet and windy May fills the barns with corn and hay ' In the borders and vegetable garden routine hoeing should encouraged. Regular hoeing destroys weeds, loosens compaction, aerates the soil and breaks up the capillary action and so reduces evaporation. The borders are left looking fresh and shipshape. A hoe vigorously plied is one of the great aids to good growth. For those gardeners with 'Hoers' Elbow', the alternative is the mulch. The main rules are that it should be laid deep, at least four inches and away from any stems, the ground should have first had a thorough soaking (From rain, not hose), this locked-away moisture may be retained for a considerable time. Any raw or uncomposted material should be avoided. Green waste, wood shavings, straw or wood bark, when used fresh may lead to denitrification of the soil. Yes, bacteria in the soil which usually convert nitrogen into useable nitrates can become starved of oxygen and so are forced to separate the oxygen molecules from the soil-bound nitrates, which are then lost to the atmosphere, we write this not only to appear clever and well-read, it really does happen, especially on undug slightly acid soil, that being just what we have here in our corner of the county. If mulch you must, then a thorough digging-over and removal of perennial weeds followed by a dressing of nitrogen should be carried out first. In the veg. patch it is important to thin previously sown crops, this job brooks no delay; overcrowding in the nursery can weaken and distend plants to such a degree that they may never fully recover their figures. We may now sow seeds of French and runner beans in those deep compost filled trenches the reader prepared in March. Peas, carrots, parsnip, lettuce, radish and spinach may also be sown now. Brussels sprouts need a long season to fully develop so the quicker they can be transplanted to their permanent quarters the better. Brassicas always planted firmly. It is customary to pinch out the tops of Broad Beans when in flower, this should greatly reduce any black fly. Early Potatoes should be earthed up little and often. Rhododendrons and Azaleas may have any dead flowers picked off to allow new growth to form. Any pruning here must be carried out immediately after flowering and before next year's flower buds form. As Daffodils and other early flowering bulbs finish flowering it is as well to remove dead flowers to prevent seed formation and encourage the growth of bulbs. Irksome and unsightly obstacles to our mowers they may be, but the dying foliage must be allowed to wither in its own time. Any remaining pruning of Forsythia may now be completed, leaving the youngest shoots, as they will bear the best blooms next year. And so, with the mercury rising, we may look forward to that finest sight of Spring, namely the first sightings of the semi-naked, tattooed and egg-white young gentlemen strutting up Horam high Street.

Tribute To His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke Of Edinburgh

I am sure that like me, you were deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, last month. In Parliament, I joined the Prime Minister in paying tributes to His Royal Highness and on behalf of Wealden I humbly sent our heartfelt sympathies to Her Majesty. His Royal Highness dedicated his life to public service and devoted himself to The Queen, the country and the Commonwealth. His legacy will continue to provide support and spirit to generations to come across the world. The Duke will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by the people of Wealden as he had so many long links to the area, especially his support for developing young people’s outdoor skills. The Duke was a Patron of two local outdoor youth projects – Hindleap Warren, nestled in the Ashdown Forest, and Bowles Rocks, located near Eridge. I had the pleasure of meeting His Royal Highness and he was always very charming with a hint of mischief. I was on the receiving end of his frank banter when he shook my hand and declared that “MPs were just getting younger and younger these days!” – I took it as a compliment! He was one of those rare people that could span generations and backgrounds with his encouragement and infectious optimism. If our small interactions with The Duke had such a lasting effect, one cannot imagine the impact of the loss on Her Majesty The Queen, having had 73 years of companionship from her loving husband. The Prince was a modern man and recognised his role to his leading wife. In a letter from their honeymoon The Prince speaks of his ambition to “weld the two of us into a new combined existence that will not only be able to withstand the shocks directed at us, but also have a positive existence for good”. The power of this existence has done a huge good over the last seven decades and we will be forever grateful for the invaluable contributions to public service. The Duke will be fondly remembered and much missed. My thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. God save The Queen.

Active Horam & Vines Cross The pandemic has shown us just how important being active is to both our physical and mental health. It makes us feel better and will ultimately make us live a longer, happier and healthier life. But how much should we do to gain the optimum health benefits? How active should I be? The UK’s Chief Medical Officers have created a series of physical activity guidelines for different stages of life. The guidelines state that children and young people (5-18 years) should “aim for an average of 60 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity (walking, scooting, cycling) a day”. All activities should make you breathe faster and feel warmer. Adults (19-64 years) should aim to do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity (brisk walking, hiking, dancing) or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity (running, walking up stairs, playing sports like football or netball) each week. Generally, it is recommended that: •

You aim to be active every day

•

You include muscle strengthening activities (carrying heavy shopping bags, yoga, lifting weights)

•

The more you do the better

•

Time spent sitting or lying is reduced

•

The type and intensity of your activity is appropriate for your level of fitness

There are also additional guidelines for older adults, disabled adults, pregnant women and women after childbirth. How can I become more active? Too often it is heard that someone ‘isn’t sporty’ however sport is just one way of being active. There is an activity to suit everyone that they will find fun and engaging, whether that is hiking, cycling, gardening, weight lifting, cross fit, yoga, tai-chi, aerobics, kayaking, swimming, pilates, skipping or martial arts – just to name a few.
