Dear Readers, Welcome to December! Can you believe it – Christmas AND a general election?! Whatever your thoughts on the impending election, we hope that you will vote for local business this December and buy as many Christmas gifts as you can locally. See our December Local Christmas Gift Guide on P60 for more details on unique, locally made gifts. Don’t miss the Horam Christmas Fun Evening on Thursday 5th December – loads of Christmas goodies, treasure hunt, Father Christmas’s Grotto, hot food, Christmas shopping from local businesses. Don’t forget to put your Christmas order in with our local butcher Davies & Son. Keep it local with their turkeys from Sheffields in Vines Cross, less than 1 mile away! We mentioned last month about a car traffic accident between a horse and car on the bridge on Horebeech Lane. The Diary are pleased to inform readers that because this incident was an injury incident and the driver refused to leave his details, the police have visited the driver and now shared his details with the owner of the horse. As you will be aware, development of Horam continues apace and the Parish Council have decided to give the village the opportunity to create a Neighbourhood Plan (our next issue for more details), this doesn’t mean we are able to reduce the number of houses being built, but that we can influence where they are built and what they look like. Keep an eye on issues in January & February next year to find out how you can have your say. Check out this month’s Planning Update, couple of new applications are flagged. If you are looking to avoid the cooking & washing up that goes hand in hand with hosting Christmas lunch at yours, don’t forget, it’s not too late to book lunch out – see inside for great eateries locally. If you haven’t yet been to church at Christmas, why not try one of our local church services? Between Christ Church and Horam Chapel there are lots of festive events to get you in the mood - carols, Christingle, Christmas eve or Christmas morning services, see ads on P6-7 & P13-14 for more information. And finally, we would like to thank our readers, advertisers and faithful delivery crew for your continued support in 2019. Getting the Diary out every month can be a slog; but it’s made so much worthwhile when we get such great feedback from the community! Wishing you all a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year. Kind regards,
cy xx Dawn & Lu Joint Editors

How to keep your dog safe at Christmas To ensure your dog remains safe this Christmas, Blue Cross has teamed up with the Veterinary Poisons Information Service to ensure you’re in the know about what dangers to keep your dogs away from during the festive season. Chocolate The chemical theobromine, which is a bit like caffeine, is found in chocolate and is toxic to dogs. Avoid putting any chocolate on or under the Christmas tree, as the temptation might be too great for our four legged friends. Christmas pudding and mince pies. Grapes and their dried products (currants, sultanas and raisins) are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small quantity can cause severe kidney failure. Onions, garlic, leeks, shallots and chives can cause toxicity, whether uncooked or cooked. Initially there can be vomiting and diarrhoea but the main effect is damage to red blood cells, resulting in anaemia. This may not be apparent for several days after ingestion. Alcohol can have a similar effect in dogs as it does in their owners when drunk in excess. They can become wobbly and drowsy and in severe cases, there is a risk of low body temperature, low blood sugar and coma. Dogs may help themselves to any unattended alcohol left lying around over Christmas, so ensure it's always out of their reach. Macadamia nuts can cause lethargy, increased body temperature, tremor, lameness and stiffness in dogs. A sugar-free sweetener called xylitol is often found in the sweets we consume over Christmas, as well as chewing gums, mouthwashes, toothpastes and supplements. It is poisonous to dogs and, although the amounts in different products vary, even one to two pieces of chewing gum can cause toxic effects in a small dog. Plants such as Poinsettia, Ivy, Mistletoe, Holly berries and Christmas trees all pose risks. Decorations made of plastic, paper or foil are of low toxicity although may obstruct the stomach. Glass decorations could pose a risk if chewed or swallowed. Nicotine is toxic to dogs, and cigarette butts are especially dangerous - so it's important not to leave any ashtrays in reach of dogs or dropped on the floor where they may eat them. Nicotine replacement patches and e-cigarette refills can also pose a risk. Symptoms of poisoning include vomiting, excess saliva and hypertension. Keep your dogs safe and have a happy Christmas!

PLANNING UPDATE
Rosemead As mentioned previously, the roundabout has raised a few issues for residents living opposite it. They have had problems coming out of their drives safely, with some motorists choosing to carry on straight over, rather than around the roundabout. The developer has advised that once the work to the bridge is completed (pavement and room for 1 car, priority to cars from north), the road furniture is installed and the street lamps are operational, that the layout will be safe. However, there are concerns about traffic backing up at peak times either side of the bridge, plus the inconvenience this will bring to the two properties opposite and the pollution kicked out by the waiting traffic. Need for a footbridge? The Diary and HPC would like to see a metal footbridge (as in Horam High Street) to allow pedestrians to safely cross the Cuckoo Trail, whilst traffic moves north & south across the bridge. This is however, not in the plans. If you agree that a footbridge may be a better solution please take a few minutes to email Kal.Kamboh@eastsussex.gov.uk Principal Officer, Transport Development Control at ESCC Highways quoting the Planning App ref of WD/2017/2651/MRM. The Diary have also asked Bovis about what measures can put in place to limit the current localised flooding on the road adjacent to the show homes. Bovis have advised that to date 6 properties have been sold, but that they cannot be inhabited until the utilities have been installed, which they estimate to be in December, so the first residents could move in from January 2020. Bimbo’s woodyard The build continues and a new application has been submitted WD/2019/2184/FA for this site to change conditions to allow for limited exterior lighting. There is no detailed description of the exterior lighting wanted for this development on this application other than 'limited exterior lighting'. The applicant says 'It would be reasonable for limited exterior lighting to be permitted much as most householders enjoy'. The replacement drawing detailing these changes 4679.8C is not available to be viewed, so the application cannot be commented upon properly or accurately. By exterior lighting one could mean anything - from an outside front door light, lamp posts, or security lights - without knowing what is intended means it is impossible to comment in any detail! Exterior lighting on this rural lane with no street lights contradicts Wealden's Dark Skies Policy. Site vehicles parked on Chiddingly Road Residents of Chiddingly Road have been experiencing issues with site traffic parking on the road. One resident approached the site manager of the Rydon Homes development at the top of Chiddingly Road and was advised that on-site parking was being completed to avoid further congestion. He also offered to speak to the site manager at the Four Seasons development behind the tennis club, as some parked cars were from this site. Horeham Flat Farm Planning application WD/2018/2526/MAO for houses on the adjacent to the Wealden Crematorium. Local residents concerns over proposed 2.5 storey houses. Wealden’s Local Plan Because of the forthcoming election we are now in purdah, this means that the The Planning Inspectorate findings for Wealden’s Local Plan will not be released until after the general election.
10
The General Election The forthcoming election is the last thing we need just before Christmas. We need to be very thorough when considering the candidates standing, with the utmost scrutiny. Wealden declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ earlier in the year but don’t appear to be deterred from approving large developments on green field sites, many of which are at a high risk of flooding. Doesn’t that strike you as highly hypocritical? Sadly, some of the biggest donors to the Conservative Party are the big developers. With this in mind, we ask if you feel strongly about this issue to email your comments to: Chris.bending@wealden.gov.uk and nusrat.ghani.mp@parliament.uk

Christmas – a time to celebrate! Christmas is a party. A birthday party to be precise. And birthdays are meant to be celebrated. It’s why the season’s greeting is “Merry Christmas!” Ironically, at most Christmas parties the person whose birthday we’re supposed to be celebrating is completely ignored. He’s never even mentioned. Although Jesus is the reason for the season, he’s often overlooked or merely mentioned along with Frosty the Snowman, Father Christmas and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and a long list of celebrated fictional characters. Getting ready for Christmas can be a great deal of work. With all the pressure of buying presents, writing cards, putting up lights, decorating the tree, organising meals and getting the house ready, we have little time to enjoy the true meaning of Christmas. Yet, the opening statement from the angels to the shepherds at Bethlehem (in Luke 2:10), tells us that God has wonderful news for us. News worth throwing a party for: I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. This news is worth celebrating for three reasons: First, it is personal: “I bring YOU.” Second, it is positive “GOOD news of great joy”. Third, it is universal: “for ALL the people.” It doesn’t matter who you are, what you’ve done, where you’ve been, or where you’re heading – this news is for you. Why not take time to come along to one of our services over the comingweeks and discover God’s great news for you at the heart of Christmas.
Our services are listed on the opposite page and we’d love you to join us. We wish everyone in Horam and Vines Cross a very happy and meaningful Christmas.

The First Coming
It came in the darkest of nights To a world gasping; A desert land. It came in the hush To a world waiting As a shadow Waits. It came as a flutter A twilight bird Wings breaking the deepest waters The cries of dreams The sighs of souls. It came tender In the murmur of the newborn In the ache of the swollen heart. It came as a whisper Soft on the lips of hillsides. It came in the song of the stars. It came as a rainfall Unexpected Passing eyes set on throne rooms Iron fists Grand shows. It came, mist-like Through the tear of the mother The sweat of the soil The dew on the cobweb In the cattle shed. It came to its own As hands unfurl Arms reach Eyes bloom. It awoke Like a flower uncurling Like a flame on the darkness And all who saw its light Understood. DanStevers.com

A Christmas message So Christmas is almost upon us and some of us will be dreading it for many reasons. It could be an elderly person who is dreading a lonely Christmas; an unhappily married couple who are wondering how they are going to navigate Christmas to give their children a happy, family Christmas; a mother with children whose husband will be working away for Christmas; someone who has lost a loved one and this will be their first Christmas without that important person; it may be a family wondering how their limited budget can stretch to food AND gifts for the festive period. Let me tell you a story that I heard the other day: I was at the supermarket yesterday and heard a loud crash and something shattering. Being nosy, I walked towards the sound and saw some people whispering and looking back to the end of the next aisle. When I walked down that aisle, I saw an older lady had hit a shelf containing a festive dinner service with her shopping trolley and many plates, bowls and serving dishes had fallen to the ground and broken. She was kneeling on the floor embarrassed, frantically picking up the shattered pieces, while her husband was peeling off the bar code from each broken dish saying “Now we will have to pay for all this!” I felt so bad for her, and everyone was just standing there staring at her!! I went and knelt beside her and told her not to worry and started helping her pick up the broken pieces. After about a minute, the store manager came and knelt beside us and said, “Leave it, we will clean this up. Let’s get your information so you can go to the hospital and have that cut on your hand looked at.” The lady, totally embarrassed said, “I need to pay for all of this first.” The manager smiled, helped her to her feet and said, “No madam, we have insurance for this, you do not have to pay anything!” For you who have read this so far, I would like you to give me a minute. Wherever you are, close your eyes, and imagine God doing the same for you! Collect the pieces of your broken heart from all the blows life has thrown at you. God will heal all your wounds, and I assure you that your sins and mistakes will be forgiven. You see, we all have the same insurance, and it’s called Grace. When you accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior and ask for forgiveness, the Manager of the universe, GOD, will say to you “Everything has already been paid for, now go on your way, all is forgiven!” You will see from this month’s Diary that there are ways we can help other people in these situations by donating to Food banks, volunteering our time to help others and more. We could also go to one of the many local church services in Horam over the Christmas period, to find out about the real meaning of Christmas and discover God’s love for us. Lucy Atabey, Editor.

The initiative aims to bring local young and older people together, to create a wildlife-friendly peace garden at the Sacred Earth site, 40-acre of land of an abandoned brickworks on Horebeech Lane in Horam. As well as supporting local biodiversity, the project encourages participants to develop friendships, learn new skills and make them feel part of a community. It provides experiential outdoor learning, therapeutic and mentoring projects in which nature plays a key part. Their aim is to help combat loneliness and isolation. This funding will help them provide a series of sessions, run by experienced facilitators. The project aims to: •
build confidence and emotional intelligence in young people
•
combat isolation, loneliness and depression in older people
•
create a new community of inter-generational friendships
•
improve on the nature conservation work they’ve already done at their site.
Touchstones will start again next year. It will revolve around the creation of a peace garden, which will become a connection hub for young and old. Participants will spend time preparing and cooking their food outdoors as well as growing it.
Interested in getting involved or have more questions? Contact Phil Greenwood at phil@sacredearthland.co.uk or on 07554 127926.
Cuckoo for Cancer is a local fundraising group, hosting events to raise much needed funds for Cancer Research UK. During 2019 we raised £11,000 via our events plus another £3,538 through donations. We are very grateful for all the help and support we get, both locally and further afield. The money we raise goes to The CRUK Research Laboratories at Sussex University in Brighton. A discovery centre dedicated to understanding the biology of cancer. If anyone would like to be involved with the group or help in any way then please call Sue Mosey on 01435 813505.

A sense of smell Aromatherapy is a holistic healing treatment that uses 25 concentrated natural plant extracts to promote health vo % o uc ff and well-being. The therapist uses aromatic essential he firs ro tt oils medicinally to improve the health of the body, n rea pr ev tme mind, and spirit. The oils are composed of tiny moleiou nt s p , se cules that can penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream, ag e e. causing physiological effects. They also quickly reach the brain via pathways from the nose as they are inhaled, connecting with an area of the brain that deals with memories and emotions – this helps to change how we feel quickly, completely bypassing the conscious mind. Local lady Anna Kaye has a long history of experience in holistic healing, besides having put in plenty of hours caring for the elderly, mentally ill and children with disabilities, she has recently qualified as an aromatherapist and luckily for us, is practising in Horam. Anna is passionate about the benefits of aromatherapy massage and recognises that aromatherapy can be of benefit, both as an occasional treat to de-stress and relax, and also as a valuable way for people to work more deeply on themselves, with regular sessions over a period of time.
Why not beat the winter blues with aromatherapy? It can be used to treat a number of conditions, such as: • • • •
Chronic pain Muscle spasms High blood pressure Inflamed joints
• • • •
Depression Lowered immunity Scarring and other skin conditions Stress
Call Anna, a fully qualified aromatherapist & holistic therapist based in Horam on 01435810052 or 07449611803, or email her at massage@anaroma.co.uk www.anaroma.co.uk 32

Southern States of the USA There are eleven states to be discovered in the south of the USA and every single one of them has something historical to shout about which has shaped the culture of today on both sides of the pond. Recently, Bianca from The Travel Concept, spent seven days visiting just three of the states and her week was crammed full of interesting and exciting places to visit. Starting in Nashville, the capital city of Tennessee state and also the Country Music capital of the world there are plenty of places to visit including the Grand Old Opry, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Johnny Cash Museum Tennessee is also home to the famous ‘Jack Daniels’ whiskey and is the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Bianca’s next stop was Downtown Memphis. Located on the famous Mississippi River, the city itself has experienced quite a rebirth in the last few years. Areas such as Beale Street – said to be ‘Home of the Blues’ offers dozens of bars and clubs, most of whom offer live music. Carrying on with the musical theme, no visit to Memphis would be complete without a trip to ‘Gracelands’, home the King of rock and roll himself, Elvis Presley. The South is also famous for its involvement in another important period in American history. The National Civil Rights Museum is located at the former Lorraine Motel, where civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated on 4th April 1968. Here you can walk through history and learn more about this tumultuous and inspiring period in history. Bianca’s journey took her even further south, visiting historic towns such as Natchez, the original capital city of Mississippi and home to the grandest collection of antebellum homes the South has to offer. The last stop on Bianca’s road trip, and the one she was most excited to visit, was New Orleans – and it didn’t disappoint! Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter is famous for its many bars and jazz clubs. The first ever cocktail was created here. A ‘Hurricane’ is a must try – but be careful to drink it slowly! During Bianca’s road trip she sampled many traditional foods, including ‘dry rub ribs’ at Charlie Vergo’s Rendevous restaurant, dinner at BB Kings and Itta Bena’s in Nashville and sampled Louisiana’s famous Creole and Cajun cooking in New Orleans. The Southern States has so much to offer and Bianca’s ‘7-day’whistle-stop-tour’ only scratched the surface. During her trip she visited many hotels at each stop and is now well placed to offer guidance and advice to anyone wishing to visit.

How am I going to pay for Christmas? As Christmas approaches, some families will be worried about what they are going to eat over the festive period. Whilst we may be out splurging on additional goodies we wouldn’t normally buy, they are thinking about how they are going to feed their children enough, every day. During school holidays, those children with families on a low income will be missing their warm, cooked free school meal which puts even more pressure on already stretched household budgets. Why not grab two of some of the things you buy when food shopping and donate the spare one to a local foodbank or shelter - like Matthew25 in Eastbourne? Collections points for Hailsham ,Crowborough & Hastings Foodbanks (that also serve Hellingly, Horam & Heathfield): •
Waitrose, Station Road, Heathfield.
•
Co-op Food, Upper Horsebridge Road, Horsebridge.
•
Churches across Heathfield.
•
Sainsburys, Station Road, Heathfield.
Collection points for ‘Christmas in A Box’ items for food banks & local shelters: Christmas in a Box is a local initiative from Horam residents, mother and daughter Sarah & Georgia Cook. This is the second year for this project and involves the collection of festive grocery items and accessories – e.g. crackers, gifts, cards, decorations. •
Co-op Heathfield for “Christmas in a Box” items. Every Sunday from 10.30-4pm plus permanent donation box (up until 15th December 2019). Search for Christmas In a Box - East Sussex on Facebook for more details.

A busy month! We’ve had Jack from Art Chocolat join us to share his Chocolatier skills - the results were outstanding and delicious! We made candles from rolling beeswax, decorated filing boxes to name but a few crafts. All Saints and St Richard’s, Dallington, Broad Oak Primary Schools have all joined us for activities along with Little Tinkers Nursery School who join us every Thursday for crafts, fun and games. We were lucky enough to be recorded by BBC Sussex Radio which was aired on Danny Pike’s Show along with a live interview. The wonderful Angela Brooks and some of her choir members from Cake and Wine Club lift our spirits every week with their enthusiastic singing - infectious! Kindly sponsored by Axell Eames. Please contact Rachel Gibson on 07971 032667 if you would like to see what Young at Heart is all about - we’d love to meet you!

December Gardening Diary ' When dark December glooms the day and takes our Autumn joys away' Sir Walter Scott. Well not a bit of it, these may be the sentiments of a gloomy Scot, mired in his Arctic gloom, but we take heart from the month when the sun is reborn and, though the worst rigors of winter are still ahead of us, there is the promse of rebirth ahead. Whilst once this rebirth was celebrated in the Roman Saturnalia, it is now supplanted by Christmas and the birth of a redeemer. All is intricately entwined. As in November, the weather this month is rarely an incentive to be out there upside down in a border, but a garden is a relentless tyrant, which may only be tamed when we take every chance to press on. The edges of lawns may have been eroded away or died back from being smothered by overgrowth from the borders, lying leaves, or the depredations of children. The easiest way to make the edges good is to roll a length of turf along the edge and cut around it with a sharp knife, then roll it up, the outlined shape may now be excavated to an inch depth, the base broken down to a tilth and the new turf rolled back into place, a board to stand on will help bed the turf down, expelling any air, there should be no air pockets, especially under the edges. New plantings should be checked from time to time as frost or wind may have loosened the roots and loose plantings rarely survive, we must always have our mallest about our person to firm up any loose stakes. Any brassicas in the vegetable plot should likewise be checked for firmness, all brassicas greatly resent any looseness around their feet. Frost and gales in November will have seen to the last of the roses, we may reduce the top growth back a little and remove frosted flowers and hips, this will reduce wind resistance and present a more orderly appearance in the rose garden. This is not the main pruning, which may be done at the end of winter (Though many gardeners do this before Christmas) The harvesting of Brussels sprouts should be in full swing, starting from the bottom up and leaving the green tops until last. In the event of an 'Arctic blast ' being forecast, it may be worthwhile digging up some leeks and parsnips and heeling them into a trench so as to avoid having to harvest by hammer and bolster. Sometime between Alamein day and the Ides of the month we may beg, borrow or otherwise purloin a number of twigs from some of the more forward of the trees and shrubs, including yellow flowering jasmine, willow, winter flowering viburnums, berberis, hawthorn, witch hazel and contorted hazel, these, when brought into a warm room and put in water should be in flower by Christmas, hinting at the rebirth and new life just around the corner. The No-mans' land behind the bonfire heap may supply teasels, whilst sea thistle and artichoke heads saved from last month will make for a fine Christmas display when spraypainted by the more responsible of the junior public. The dried seed pods of Honesty make a fine sight shivering in a vase on the piano. Whilst the keen gardener will have been digging over the soil since Trafalgar Day, it is not too late to keep up the digging when conditions allow. The more soil we can get exposed to the weather the better. Areas reserved for hardy annuals should be dug over as well, but unless the soil is very poor there is no need to dig in compost or manure as annuals flower best on poorer soil. Now most of the leaves have dropped, we may appreciate nature's architecture in the boughs and burls of the trees around us whilst also taking worried note of deciduous

December Gardening Diary trees and shrubs that are starting to crowd over the lawns and borders, this encroachment eventually leads to a thin, mossy lawn and straggling shrubs which are straining for the dwindling light, in such cases we must be ruthless with the chain saw and loppers; Nature is constantly trying to crowd us out, thus in the time of the Egg kings the quality of a Saxon was measured by his willingness to strip to his badger pelt underwear in all seasons and with halberd in hand, wage unceasing battle on the forest around him. So, after exerting ourselves thus and with the nights long and dark we may look forward to many happy hours wallowing in the bath, using up all the family's hot water and with the new season's seed catalogue firmly in hand, ruminate over next year's colours and crops in the garden.
