Dear Readers, Well, it’s been kind of wet, hasn’t it? Joking aside, we have all had enough of the rain, haven’t we? Aside from the damage to gardens, flooding and the affect this long wet winter will have on nature’s seasons, our heart goes out to those of you who work outdoors. A mud fest of epic proportions, where rain stops play so often that schedules slip, pay is missed and people are soaked to the skin. Spare a thought too for the dog walkers, braving the rain to keep the dog from losing it’s mind and then towelling it down/bathing it to change it back to it’s original colour! Sadly, the more fields we lose to housing estates will only further upset the natural balance of our landscape, leading to issues for residents. Wealden residents are calling for more educated building, more affordable properties not built on flood plains or farmland, but built on brownfield sites. They want investment in the correct level of infrastructure to support more households. If you want to find out more search for Save Wealden from Overdevelopment on Facebook. If you haven’t yet completed & returned the Neighbourhood Plan questionnaire from Horam Parish Council, please ensure you have your say about the future of Horam, the deadline is 28th March 2020. Please see Planning Update on P34 for more detail on these issues. Unfortunately, a house in Horam was burgled last month and a resident was conned out of £40 by a ‘tradesman’ driving a grey van with the registration S820 NDP. Please keep your eyes peeled. The village is gearing up for the VE Day celebrations in May and are keen to feature the stories of local folk who fought in WW2 or have a connection to it. The organisers also want to honour these people on the day. Please do get in touch if you can suggest someone – use our email address below. Best wishes

What is Alabama rot? Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) Alabama rot is a disease that damages blood vessels in the skin and kidney of dogs. It causes ulcers on a dog’s skin, but sadly it causes kidney failure which can be fatal. The actual cause of Alabama rot is not known. It can affect any dog of any breed, age, or size. The majority of dogs who have been treated for Alabama rot in the UK have been walked in muddy and/or woodland areas. More cases are reported between November and May than between June and October, which suggests the dogs are more likely to be affected in winter and spring. The first signs you may notice if your dog has contracted Alabama rot are lesions or ulcers on the skin. These could appear as a patch of red skin, or as an open ulcer or sore. These sores are most commonly found on a dog’s paws or lower legs, but they can also be found on a dog’s face, mouth or tongue, or on their lower body. Signs of kidney failure include loss of appetite, thirst, tiredness and vomiting. If your dog is showing signs of sore skin or ulcers and you know these have not been caused by an injury, it’s a good idea to contact your vet. The earlier this disease is caught and treated professionally, the higher the chances of recovery. As the source of Alabama rot is unknown, there is no way of making sure you stay away from the cause – but there are things you can do to prevent your dog from being affected. Thankfully, the disease is not always fatal and the earlier it is caught, the greater your dog’s chances of survival. •
Try to avoid very muddy areas.
•
Wash your dog’s feet and legs after walks.
•
Check your dog’s body once a day, checking them regularly for the signs listed above
•
If you are in doubt, give your vet a call. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

What would we do without them? Taxi drivers, cleaners, cooks, payday lenders, locator's of lost 'stuff', nurses, agony aunts........mothers wear many hats and we'd be pretty lost without them. So why not treat her on 22nd March and show her how much you appreciate her myriad skills, patience and hard work? You could take her out for Sunday lunch to the carvery at Lakeside, a great pub meal at The Heathfield Tavern or afternoon tea in lovely surroundings at The Stonehill Restaurant at Holy Priory. Spoil her with a beautiful bunch of flowers or gift from Ana's Flowers at The Black Barn, Horam Manor - or even better book her into Ana's spring flower workshop on 5th March (see What's On for details). Or, how about a delicious slice of homemade cake in Tpodz? Or would she like some pampering? Lots of quality therapists on our doorstep - The Crystal Rooms, Horam Natural Therapy Centre, Serenity Beauty, White Rose, Emma Smith Beauty, Sonia Funnell or some gel nails at Cutting Edge? Or maybe a quirky 'statement' piece for her home or garden - visit Mays Terracotta in their new home at Heathfield Market, or some new bedding plants from Rivermead Nursery? A stylish gift for her home or to wear from M2B, a unique hand-made piece from Threadneedle Textiles? So much to choose from locally. Go on, spoil her, she is the only one you've got!

TN21 Environmental Aware...........Sustainability and Climate Change I believe most people by now are environmentally aware. The drastic effect of climate change, and the effects of this globally, and the UK impact, with flooding and storms, devastated homes, and farmers in despair with loss of agriculture and livestock feeding pastures. There are measures to help combat the worst effects, solar panels, wind farms, hydroelectric dams, tidal barriers: electric cars, hydrogen fuelled trains biofuel buses. Being holiday travel aware, and our carbon footprints. Plastic and packaging retailers are now streaking ahead with many ways to reduce these and to find alternati ves. We can all reduce, reuse and recycle in food, plastic, paper, glass, textiles and household items, saving rainwater for gardens, save electricity, turn off unnecessary lights, and standbys. Save energy shopping locally and choosing local produce, use public transport if available! support wildlife and nature conservation activities if you can, or by donations or subscriptions if you can’t. Community projects to improve locally. Joining campaigns and petitions, lobbing MPs. These can all help bring change. Wildlife friendly, bee and butterfly attracting flowers, bee and bug homes, wildflower gardens. Involving children to love and protect the environment, so important. Feeding birds, The big garden birdwatch, is extremely useful, and the experts RSPB can check the rise and fall of many species, and a better understanding of how we can help. Organic seeds some seeds are coated with pesticides and damaging to earthworms and the earth, Check with seed suppliers and local nurseries, if they supply organic seeds or where available, and if actually sourced in the UK. We need governments who stand up for nature, with laws and adequate funding. Nature loss and climate change are entwined and need to be tackled together wildlife will return if we make a space for its regrowth and habitat, e.g. wetlands, moss, peatbogs. After Greta Thunberg’s dramatic speech to the nations, our failure to tackle climate change effects, in September dedicated young people took part in the global youth and climate strike, fighting for our planet. They are the nation’s most powerful advocates, along with Greta and David Attenborough, showing us the way. The fight for natures recovery and the climate crisis, are the fights for our generation, and we face the challenge of leaving the world in a better place. Nature has a healing power for us all, and our planet. If we all did our bit, even the smallest changes, we could all improve the prospect of climate change. Ruth Buckingham

Why Horam needs a Neighbourhood Plan As detailed in last month’s issue, we are facing a massive increase in new houses in Horam since Wealden’s Local Plan has been rejected by the Government Inspector. Because of this, Horam Parish Council want to introduce a Neighbourhood Plan, which although won’t impact the numbers, will give residents the chance to influence where houses are built and what they look like. In addition to this having a Neighbourhood Plan means that the Parish Council will receive a much higher percentage of developer contributions to use in the village for the community.
What do the Parish Council use developer contributions to pay for? Developer contribution has recently paid for the paths alongside the recreation ground and leading up to Maynards Green School (from the village) to be cleared to make access safer & easier for pedestrians. It is paying for the resurfacing of the Village Hall car park; the planting of 900 trees alongside the boundary of the recreation ground to shield the new Four Season’s housing development and go some way towards mitigation for the loss of habitat to this development. At the time of writing, Horam Parish Council had only received 15% of the questionnaires back, they require at least 50% to progress to the next stage of the process. Thank you to those who have already completed the questionnaire, if you haven’t yet, please take 5 mins to complete it by 28th March 2020. Hard copies are available from Horam Centre, but were also delivered with the February issue of the Diary. Alternatively, visit the Horam Parish Council website at www. horam.com/neighbourhood-plan/ to complete the survey on line. NB: If completing on-line and wishing to add additional comments, please click on any ‘other’ option and a text box will appear, please write your comment there.
Rosemead Update The work to the bridge started 17th February which will involve a combination of traffic lights and road closure from 16th March for 2 weeks whilst a pavement is created for pedestrians and the parapet of the bridge is raised accordingly. No traffic apart from school buses will be given access, so diversions in place. As mentioned in our last issue, a solution for surface water on the road outside the sales centre has been found and agreed upon, and work will commence very soon. The road surface either side of the roundabout is also on the list to be addressed as a priority.
Southside (opposite Rosemead) WD/2018/0509/MAJ This application for 58 homes has gone to appeal from owners Chailey Homes Ltd vs Wealden District Council. On the 19th February the Full Council voted to agree to withdraw the Local Plan following the Inspector’s rejection of it, and begin creating a new one. Because of this, this appeal WILL NOT BE CONTESTED and will therefore receive the green light to proceed.
Land off the B22203, Maynards Green, TN21 0DE WD/2017/1132/MAO This application for 26 houses went to appeal and the Inspector advised that because the development was contrary to the development plan and that there are no other considerations which would outweigh his findings, the appeal should not succeed.
May Garland The application has been rejected and recommendations made to the applicant to make changes. If you are concerned about the over development of Wealden, we would recommend you search for the group Save Wealden from Over Development on Facebook. This group is made up of residents across Wealden who are really concerned about how much of our green spaces are being built upon and that the majority of these developments are limited to executive homes that local people cannot afford.

Fed up of being indoors over the winter? Free on Wednesday mornings? Come to Wellbeing Wednesdays and spend some quality time in nature with us.Wellbeing Wednesdays will enable you to: • Engage with the outdoors and really appreciate the beauty of spring at our lovely site. • Meet others and socialise around a campfire with a cuppa. • Get some fresh air and gentle exercise. • Observe and learn about local wildlife. • Try some mindfulness and sensory connection activities. We’ve got funding from the National Lottery Community Fund to provide Wellbeing Wednesdays sessions as a free service for four sessions. Dates are April 15, April 29, May 6, and May 27 and times are 10.15am – 12.30pm. If the project is successful we may be able to get more long term funding. Wellbeing Wednesdays is open to anyone aged 30-65 from the Horam, Hailsham, Heathfield and Eastbourne areas. There are 12 places available. For more info or to book a place, contact our lead facilitator Caroline White at info@sacredearthland.co.uk These are just some of activities we’ll try: • Sensory walking – building your awareness of our underused senses (hearing, smell, touch and intuition). • Walking and talking around the Sacred Earth site – visiting our woodland, walking around our lake, observing the wildlife (you may get to meet our resident herons!). • Nature-based mindfulness – bringing elements of nature into a breathing-based meditation. Our 40-acre site is just off the Cuckoo Trail, where the Horam Brickworks used to be. It has woodland, farmland, two large lakes and a pond. It has been managed to encourage biodiversity and has a wider range of flora and fauna than the surrounding countryside, making it the ideal location to see interesting plants and wildlife. We have a large, comfortable yurt that is heated by a woodburner and can be used in colder or wet weather. There is also a covered kitchen area, large outdoor fire pit with seating, compost toilets and space for parking up to 15 cars.

Chile & Easter Island Recently The Travel Concept has concentrated on showcasing South America, it is a fascinating part of the world with some beautiful and exciting destinations to offer. Chile being a prime example of this, the longest and thinnest country in the world runs from the Andes to the Pacific and shares its borders with Argentina, Peru and Bolivia. Chile also has territories in Polynesia and Antarctica, making it a tri-continental nation. From the high Andean plateau to the untouched southern territories at the other end of the country, Chile invites you to live adventures in the middle of the world’s driest desert, in the unique rainy temperate forest of South America, in front of millennial glaciers that are waiting to be discovered or under the watchful eye of the Andes in the middle of the buzz of modern citites like its capital, Santiago. These cultural and climatic contrasts have left an imprint on the identity of the country and its people. Warm, energetic, approachable and kind, Chileans share the love for their land, which invites you to build relationships beyond boundaries, to live unique experiences and to discover Chile. Recently, one of the Travel Concept’s Partners recently visited Chile and Easter Island, she had this to say about her experience: The mystery of the famous Moai statues is brought to life by the local guides, whose families’ date back to the 13th century – the time these statues were created. It raises questions like, “Who built them?”, “Why were they made?”, and “How did they move them from one side of this island to the other?” There is a lot of mystery around the last question, the only way to discover more is to include Easter Island in your itinerary to Chile. A five hour flight from Santiago will get you to this mysterious island in the middle of the South Pacific. The Rosaria wine valley (an hour’s drive from Santiago) gives you a beautiful landscape filled with beautiful vineyards. Here you can relax, enjoy the food and wine before continuing your journey around Chile. Walking through the Valley of the Moon in the Atacama Desert (one of the driest places in the world!) is certainly a must – I experienced scenery that can only be compared to the surface of the moon! For Astronomy lovers this area has the clearest night skies so perfect for stargazing. The final part of my trip took me onto Patagonia, and the epic scenery of the Torres Del Paine National Park. Patagonia Camp was my home for five days. A beautiful property with luxury yurts overlooking Lake Toro and the Paine Horns in the distance. Activity lovers, photographers and wildlife lovers will revel in this amazing part of Chile. If you would like to find out more about South America and the many destinations it offers get in touch with Tracy and Bianca from The Travel Concept.

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – March 2020 NEIGHBOUROOD PLAN Constructing a Neighbourhood Plan Stage 1: We would like to thank residents that have completed and returned the Questionnaire that was delivered with last month’s Village Diary. Unfortunately, to date we have only had a 15% response. It is critically important that we have a higher percentage of returns to enable us to progress with preparing a Neighbourhood Plan. It is clear from the responses received that residents are very concerned about the future of the village. Please help us to move forward and develop a Neighbourhood Plan for Horam by completing the Questionnaire. The questionnaire can be completed on-line using the following link: https://www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/SGDTZTT A hard copy of the questionnaire can also be obtained from the Parish Council office at the Horam Centre (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings 9.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m.) a reply paid envelope is also provided. FOOTPATHS Improvement works have been carried out to the footpaths from Stillyans up to Maynards Green school and along the A267/in front of the village hall. These works were identified by HPC for improvement and financed by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) payments from developers. HORAM PLAY PARK Due to the appalling ground conditions the play park is still closed off until the ground improves. The mud on the very expensive kit will do long term damage, so to avoid this happening the area must be protected. Any further damage and this could also become unsafe. It will be open again as soon as is possible even though the rain shows no signs of letting up. The Third Age equipment will also be useable as soon as the ground has dried up. Apologies for the ongoing inconvenience. SKATE PARK The skate park is still open and access can be gained from the side road near the hedge. Once again parents and guardians are reminded to ensure that their youngsters wear protective kit at all times. The skatepark is not a playground and is meant for users aged eight upwards. Visitors are requested to use the litter bins considerately and take anything large home with them. PLEASE NOTE that these bins are NOT for the disposal of dog waste. A bin, especially for the disposal of dog pooh, is provided on the recreation ground – PLEASE USE THIS! HORAM MEMORIAL STONE - PLAQUES Plaques for the memorial stone are available for purchase at a cost of £110.50 and can be ordered from the Parish Council. Please contact the Clerk, Sally Blades clerk@horam.com, m:07900576236 or 01435 812151 on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings for further information. PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS - 2nd Wednesday every month, Full Council meeting, 7.30pm in The Horam Centre, High Street, Horam. The Planning Committee will meet prior to that at 6.45 p.m. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT Monday evening Planning Committee meetings ONLY, will commence at 6.30 p.m. This will continue until the 30th March 2020 when they will revert back to 7.30 p.m. All committee meeting dates, including Finance and Planning are listed on the Parish Notice Board, the website and at The Horam Centre. March Gardening Diary
" As many mists as ye have in March, so many frosts in May " With the ever quickening pace of climatic warming, we wonder whether old weather lore still holds true; does anyone remember the last Maytime frosts? March is considered by many to be the beginning of the gardening year and one of the busier months of the year in the garden and it is a good thing to be kept busy during the long gloom of Lent, but with Dennis casting down trees to the left of us and to the right of us, it all feels rather apocalyptic and hopeless. This month sees the last full moon of winter, the so-called Worm Moon, or Sap moon, Crow Moon, Crust Moon, Sugar Moon, Chaste Moon or Lenten Moon, it matters not so long as it brings a change in our weather fortunes; We are tired of the daily row to work. The planting of deciduous trees, shrubs, fruits and roses should be finished as soon as possible to give them a chance to get a grip of the soil before drought (!) may punish them. In a warm sheltered border we may be planting evergreens such as Laurels, conifers, hollies, azaleas and rhododendrons. Most herbaceous perennials can also be planted now. Rose pruning should be carried on this month, subject to the weather. Though many gardeners prune earlier, during winter, later pruning allows us to cut back to the best buds and to avoid hard frosts on new shoots. We should try to resist until the vernal equinox, on the 20th and a week or so later if a Blackthorn Winter has really set in. Hybrid tea roses may be pruned back to five or so buds with all sickly and dead wood cut away. Climbing roses should have their side branches cut back to two buds. It is worth feeding the roses with a dedicated rose fertiliser now as the leaves are making their first appearance and spraying with a fungicide from now until June should keep the leaves looking clean all season. Unlike most bulbous rooted plants, snowdrops will benefit from being lifted and divided every few years as the clumps can become very crowded, leading to a mass of blind shoots. In the vegetable garden we should be aiming first at the creation of the all important fine tilth. As always, the weather is master. The soil should be visibly drying; better to wait until the end of the month or beyond before sowing a seed if there is any hint of stickiness. The reader will have dug over the plot thoroughly last autumn, digging in barrowfuls of horse droppings, compost, shoddy and celebrity magazines. The floods and gales of winter will have weathered the diggings down to an uneven crumbly surface. Patient raking eventually renders our seed bed smooth and fine, air pockets being trodden out as we go. We might allow ourselves five minutes leaning on the rake indulging in a short pipe and a gloat over our seed bed, well prepared and superior others'. Only now may we sow. The first sowings may be of peas, leeks, parsnips (always use new seed), broad beans, parsley, spinach and radishes, onion and shallot sets may be planted nearer the end of the month, a trowel is better than a dibber for these as any compaction encour-

ages them to wriggle free of the ground. Garlic may still be planted but no time must be lost. New beds of Thyme, Tarragon, Mint and other herbs may be planted out towards middle of Lent. Early potatoes to go in from the Ides of March, planted about six inches down, these early plantings will run some risk from frost but it heartens to see the neat rows of tight foliage as soon as possible and any frost-blackened shoots will soon be replaced. We are advised to carry around a bale of straw at all times during March and early April to spread over tender shoots in the case of a late frost. For those who commune with the moon and garden by her phases and the biodynamic system of lunar planting, root crops to be planted or sown during the waning gibbous, from the 9th to 16th. Rows for runner beans may be prepared now, this should involve digging in barrowfuls of compost or horsey stuff a foot and a half down and allowed to settle down over the next six to eight weeks before sowing. Jerusalem artichokes may be planted near the end of the month, notorious breakwinds though they are, they are also very useful windbreaks on exposed sites and there is no better plant for hiding an unsightly fence or shed. Tired roots of rhubarb may be divided and replanted now and should regain their zest in a couple of years. We may hope that the long list of routine maintenance about the garden has been completed by Ash Wednesday as the new season will leave no time for pulling up arrears. Quid Hortos Colit
