Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary January 2022

Female led modern funeral directors five star reviews.

Dear Readers, Happy New Year! As we had to write this letter in early December to meet Christmas print deadlines, we can only hope that the new Covid variant did not disrupt your Christmas plans too much? Those looking forward to new year holidays, may well have been met with disappointment once again. However a new year is upon us and so we must try to look ahead with as much optimism as we can muster (never easy in the depths of January!). If you need cheering up, why not book for the comedy night at the end of this month at the village hall to raise funds for Horam Village Hall? See P23 for details. Or visit the fabulous new Sew Inspired in Mayfield, High Street. We hope you are encouraged to think about getting more exercise into your life by this months Active column - see P22 for inspiration. Those of you who have despaired at the over development of Horam and surrounding villages may be encouraged to read a letter to Michael Gove from seven local parish councils about their concerns on P42. Let's do this 2022!

Helping families create truly personal goodbyes.

EW S

“Mum spent some time planning parts of her funeral and had the opportunity to meet with both Lucy and the recommended celebrant, Mark, prior to her passing. This made our job a little easier when the time came and to be honest, Lucy and Mark were on hand whenever we needed their guidance and honesty. The process was easy and relaxed in the planning and on the day, the service felt calm and personal to us. We would recommend White Feather Funerals“ Mrs C “We were delighted with Lucy and Dawn’s part in arranging my husband Ken’s funeral. They were both truly professional and yet compassionate in their dealings with me and my family and were there at all times with their help when needed. Their assistance ensured that my husband had a truly memorable send off, exactly what we wanted and a day that will remain forever in all our memories. We are so pleased we chose White Feather at this most difficult time. Thank you so much from all the Whittakers. Bless you both.” Mrs W “Great service, in every sense of the word. Lucy and Dawn were excellent in helping the family navigate the many options and completely open minded to our wishes and suggestions. I recommend White Feather Funerals without hesitation.” Mr S “I did not want the formal and usual crematorium funeral. Following a private committal, we were fortunate to be able to have a garden service and celebration at home, in the garden that my husband loved. Dawn and Lucy made this possible and organised the whole event with great sympathy and professionalism.” Mrs E

Active Horam & Vines Cross New Year, New You Whilst jogging along the cuckoo trail recently, I got chatting to a fellow runner from a local running club. He informed me that he had first taken up running during the first lockdown where he had completed the fantastic Couch to 5k programme. Just 18 months later he was training for his first marathon. He was 70. The New Year brings with it the opportunity to make a fresh start and begin a journey to become more active and reach those 150 recommended minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (anything that makes you feel hotter and breathe faster) each week.

Why?

Physical activity delivers immediate mental health and social benefits and has a longterm positive impact on our physical health. Getting active in the way that’s right for us – whether that’s returning to a sport or activity you once loved or giving something a go for the first time – and planning how we’re going to keep going through these darker and colder months – will help us cope with the ongoing impact of the pandemic and help us to lead longer, happier and healthier lives.

How? We are extremely lucky living in Horam and Vines Cross to have nearby access to recreation grounds, walking routes, the cuckoo trail and a host of sports clubs, gyms and indoor activity venues making it easy for you to get started and find something that you enjoy. Additionally, the Join the Movement campaign continues to provide advice, guidance and inspiration on ways to keep or get moving in 2022, regardless of your current ability, beginning in the comfort of your own home. Finally, the Healthy Wealden website provides a whole host of information on how to get active locally. Why not join a local guided walk?

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – January 2022 www.horam.com & www.facebook.com/horamvillage

A Happy and Healthy 2022 to all residents of Horam Parish. HORAM PARISH COUNCIL COMPLAINS TO THE TOP ABOUT UNSUSTAINABLE OVERDEVELOPMENT Horam Parish Council was the driving force behind a letter that was composed and signed by seven, likeminded Parish Councils and sent to The Right Hon Michael Gove MP. The letter was the brain-child of the Chairman of Horam’s Planning and Highways Committee. As you can imagine with seven Parish Councils involved, each with their own resident’s concerns, there were inevitably more than seven views being expressed in those editorial meetings! But he stuck at it, after a couple of months the words were agreed and the letter signed; it was sent by Horam Parish Council on behalf of all seven signatories. Your Parish Councillors would like to thank Sally, our Parish Clerk, for her patience and professionalism keeping track of each and every re-write and update; and for doing it on top of her usual, busy workload. The letter, addressed to The Right Hon Michael Gove MP, Secretary of State (whose brief includes Housing - among a lot of other things) was also copied to The Prime Minister, all local and nearby MP’s (as far away as Brighton and Hastings), Wealden District Council and the press. At the time of sending this page to the Village Diary Editor, we had yet to receive a response from Mr Gove. They were your, Horam Parish residents, concerns that went into the letter. Your Parish Council will keep you updated as to any response and progress.

HORAM PLAY PARK - UPDATE

The newly sown grass is sprouting well and has now had a couple of cuts which helps to encourage the root growth that makes it strong enough to survive the footfall in this popular place. The Parish Council is liaising closely with the contractor as we are keen to re-open the Play Park as soon as it is ready. The skate board park remains open.

FINGER POSTS, BENCHES, BINS AND BOARDS

The re-painting of the finger posts has been completed. The new bench-seat has been installed at the corner of Laundry Lane and Horebeech Lane, this replaced the one that became unsafe. A new litter bin for Vines Cross is on order. The Parish Council Notice Board by the Memorial Garden has been replaced. Sitting, as it does, in the High Street between the car park and the shops it is in an ideal place for residents to stop and read the notices about your Parish. Notices are also displayed in the window of the Parish Council office in The Horam Centre, as well as on Horam Parish Council’s website and Facebook page:- www.horam.com & www. facebook.com/horamvillage

OUR HORAM PCSO

If you wish to bring anything to the attention of our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for Horam (Cathy Gilling) she can be contacted by email on catherine.gilling@sussex.pnn.police.uk However, for emergencies contact the Police by phoning 999.

IMPORTANT - PHOTOS, COMMENTS & VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO NEEDED

Please take photos of the places/buildings in Horam Parish that you like, and also those that you do not like; then send with your comments to the Clerk (email below), the more photos you send the better. Volunteers are also needed for the steering group to help in the delivery of the Neighbourhood Plan to shape the Horam Parish of the future.

COMMUNITY

This year Young at Heart has continued in all sorts of different guises - adapting where necessary to support our amazing members through difficult times - isolation and loneliness has been worse than ever with Covid spoiling many a plan. However, Young at Heart were able to invite the children back from the start of the Autumn term - a wonderful distraction for all. We have put in place the "Poetry Together" scheme which was started by Giles Brandreth and backed by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. We have split the room to have the children join us reading their poetry that they have written or found and in return we have done the same. The response has been incredible and hugely rewarding for both parties - imaginations have "run wild"! Wonderful to see our members invigorated by words - both to read and hear. Little Tinkers Nursery School join us on a Thursday - their sweet faces and fun antics are a joy to behold. Our weekly craft is now organised by Cherry Spring Studio, Horam, whose innovative ideas have kept everyone busy. Qi Gong with the brilliant Rowana Mladek and music and singing with the incredible Angela Brooks and Cake and Wine Club Choir whose strength, support and talent is second to none. Bingo, quizzes, home cooked lunch and home baked cake for tea are also part of the day. Most of all we have provided company, entertainment, fun and laughter to those who might otherwise not see or speak to anyone in their week. Combatting isolation and loneliness is a subject Young at Heart are passionate about, equally if you have a family member with dementia we are more than happy to provide some respite. If you have a family member, friend or neighbour who you think might benefit please do not hesitate to contact Rachel on 07971 032667 - we would love to meet you! In the meantime, all at Young at Heart wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Lots of love from us all xx

January Gardening Diary " Better to see a mad dog than a hot sun in January." So, as we emerge, blinking into the low January sun and bilious from a surfeit of sherry and lampreys, we one and all should be out in the garden to take every chance to push on with garden chores. There is much to be done before the great awakening, when urgent tasks multiply and leave no time for pulling up arrears. So how may we work off that corpulence and crapulence of the festive season? Might we start with mending the torn felt on the shed roof, or cleaning and disinfecting the green house or burning that pile of cuttings left over from the autumn pruning? Conditions allowing, we may be planting hedging plants, hardy climbers, deciduous shrubs, roses and the hardier perennials. As always we should be looking over recent plantings to see none have been loosened or lifted by frost. Firm staking is vital here. Towards the end of the month in sheltered spots we may be planting, always weather permitting, Jerusalem artichokes, Horse-radish, Rhubarb and Shallots. A heavily cropped vegetable garden will slowly increase in acidity over the years, the change may be almost imperceptible but by degrees the quality and quantity of crops, especially brassicas, will disappoint, we may dig in extra manures and fertilisers to boost the yield but these may only increase the acidity. The PH must be adjusted. Assuming the reader carried out autumn digging and manuring, now is the time to lime. It is important to keep manuring and liming at least three months apart as they are uneasy bedfellows. Liming will also help to improve soil condition and workability by causing the very fine particles to be found in clay to join together into larger clumps; the happily named process of flocculation. In common with one’s children, the showy dahlia is a 'gross feeder ' and will repay preparation carried out now; Planting pockets may be dug and backfilled with herbivore poo manure together with bone meal, this mix will fester down in time for planting out in late spring. The same method works well for pumpkins, courgettes or any crop that will produce heavily from a single plant. The herbaceous border may have become over-crowded with older plants and may need some attention as to lifting and replanting, those plants to be moved or divided may be dug out now and put in a shady corner with some covering over the root balls. The bed may now be dug over and quantities of horse droppings, compost and bone meal dug in before plants are relocated. As with the lawn-loving Breton in the Asterix books, an Britisher’s pride is the lawn. Having vigorously scattered the worms casts with the besom we may now apply topdressing at around four pounds a square yard, this may be gently and rhythmically spread back and forth with the back of a rake, and a very calming job it is too. Cloches. We don't seem to see as many nowadays, but they are essential for drying the soil and warming up the ground prior to sowing seed. By setting out cloches now we may gain

38

ourselves a month's head-start with the crop and be in a position come Spring to be gloating over our unseasonably early crops. If cloches were put out at the beginning of the month we may, after the Ides, presume to sow some onion, lettuce, radish, broad bean and round-seeded pea. Wood ashes from the wood burner will be greatly appreciated by the onions, important to store these in a dry place before use. Seed potatoes may be stood eye ends uppermost to start the chitting process. Faded flowers on Azaleas may be pinched off as one passes by. There are little jobs and big jobs to be seen to wherever we look. For those governed by the fourth humor, melancholia, or those by nature prone to ennui, work in the garden is the best possible remedy. There should be no time left for brooding or boredom. Do not eat bats.

LOCAL PARISH COUNCILS SAY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Horam Parish Council were very pleased to be the driving force behind and a signatory on a letter to The Rt Hon Michael Gove, MP, from seven, like-minded, concerned Parish Councils about the scale of overdevelopment in rural East Sussex. These seven Parish Councils, working together and voicing the concerns of their parishioners, are seeking a meeting with him in his position as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations to discuss their concerns about the environmentally unsustainable development that is taking place throughout rural East Sussex. The letter was sent on 8th December - see over for a copy. Residents are thankful that parish councils are speaking up for us.
