Doing things differently!

Dear Readers,

Hello and welcome to October! Every month throws up new challenges & new rules to remember and adhere to. It's all very confusing and challenging but community is key. If we can support one another during these difficult times, then we can get through it. It's heartening to know that even through these unusual times, people are able to adapt and evolve. Local builders firm Orchid really struggled in lock down to secure the building materials they needed to continue, the existing projects they were working on. They had to source materials themselves, gaining valuable experience in this market. Come September, they have secured premises at Wickers Yard on Vines Cross Road and launched their own builders merchants. The DIY'ers of Horam and surrounding areas are very well served now by two local companies, Orchid & Balcombes on Hailsham Road. And of course, your editors have launched a new business, read all about it on pX. Let's continue to support local businesses! Thoughts go to all us parents sending our kids back to school and our babies off to university. By the time you read this I will have driven no1 son in an overpacked car a few hours from Horam to his new home in another part of the country. Very close to a locked down area. And he won't be able to experience the normal freshers week. But he won't know any different, so hoping that the excitement of a new environment, new mates and not having his mum & dad breathing down his neck will be enough to make this a good experience! If you haven't already, please return the questionnaire on the GAP project in last month's Diary. Lots of effort from volunteers has gone into these plans to enhance our community assets. We need our green & open spaces even more than ever given the level of development in Wealden.

Doing things differently We hope you had time to read last month’s issue and hope you will have seen the article about our new venture. It may seem an opportunistic cash in on a pandemic, but we can assure you that the timing is purely coincidental and is something Dawn & I have been working on for over a year. It’s actually something I have been thinking about for 10 years, on and off. Last year a friend of mine died suddenly and his funeral was unlike any funeral I had ever been to before. All the other funerals I had been to followed a very similar format in similar venues. Sure, there was the occasional personalisation of one, but nothing that truly reflected the person’s life. My friend’s funeral was so HIM! Dawn organised her Mum’s funeral in 2018, she said she felt that the experience with the funeral director was very much a tick box exercise and that she hadn’t been made aware of the different options available to her. “Had I known what I know now, I would have made several different decisions. I feel saddened that I never had the opportunity to provide my mum with a truly reflective funeral of the beautiful person that she was”. Needless to say Dawn and I have been working together for the last couple of years and during this time we have had many conversations. Dawn was very much working through her own grief when we took over the Diary, Then with the sudden loss of my friend, we found ourselves having endless conversations about death, funerals and grief. Together, last Autumn we discussed launching our own funeral directors. We approach this Autumn having been trained, educated ourselves on all the available local facilities, had hands-on experience, found premises and launched on Heathfield High Street (fingers crossed by the time you are reading this!). We aim to do things differently, getting to know our customers and offering them lots more choice for their loved ones’ send off. We aim to create highly personalised funerals, rather than offering packages derived from lots of tick boxes. We don’t have years of experience in the business, but we have relationships with people that do and we have the passion and drive to ensure our customer’s needs are met. We hope that you will be able to entrust us with the responsibility of caring for your loved one and we will encourage you to be involved in the plans as much, or as little as you want or need. A ‘good’ funeral can make all the difference to the grieving process, and knowing that you have created a funeral that your loved one would want, can be a comfort to you. What to do if your pet is stolen Yesterday I had a phone call from a panicked friend, whose young bitch had disappeared from their garden. We knew one of the scenarios was that she had been stolen. It was important to act quickly and make the dog “too hot to handle”. She immediately flooded social media with pictures. Luckily the dog was found and taken to a pub, and within hours they had the dog back. So, what should you do if your dog goes missing? Speed is of the essence. By raising awareness and keeping your missing pet’s profile high you have a much better chance of being reunited. • If your pet has disappeared from your garden or is missing locally, search the area and hand out your contact details to neighbours, postmen, local dog walkers and others who cover the local area. Also post your pet’s details on any local Facebook community site •

If your pet is microchipped, immediately inform your microchip database

Ensure there is someone available to receive calls at the phone number that is on the tag

• If your dog is lost on a walk and you have had no luck calling him, go back to your car as dogs are often able to find their way back there. If your dog is sociable with people check any areas where people may gather like cafes or shops. Leave your contact details and a description of your dog just in case •

Report the loss to your local authority animal warden

• If you believe your pet has been stolen, report the theft to the police and ask for a Crime Reference Number. Also check if there was any CCTV operating in the area that might provide clues •

Contact other local services to make them aware your pet is missing such as:

• Register your pet as missing on as many Missing Pet websites as possible. The adventure of a (not so black) cat called Sooty Sooty is just like any other cat. They have their routine. A bit of exploring, lots of sleeping, some eating and fuss on her terms. When she left early on Thursday and didn’t come back for breakfast I thought nothing of it. She’s probably dining out again on some delectable New Pond Hill rodent. It was a lovely day, not unusual not to see Sooty until tea time. I bet she’s probably gone to visit one of the neighbours. Got to love a good fish pond! Five pm. No Sooty. I’m starting to get slightly worried now. All the dogs and cats get fed at five. Usually everyone starts following me around from 4:30 onwards in the hope that I may give in and feed them early. What ensued over the next couple of days was endless trips up and down the hill, checking ditches, verges and social media. Thank goodness for WhatsApp and Facebook! My lovely neighbours searched gardens, garages and outbuildings, the Heathfield Community shared and shared my post. No Sooty. Saturday morning there was the dreaded phone call from the vets. A black cat had been brought in - found in our vicinity. It’s hard to find distinguishing markings on a black cat that’s actually rather brown. It turned out not to be Sooty (my thoughts are with whoever the owner is). By Saturday evening (after much searching) I had pretty much given up all hope when Louis (one of the PTs at Isenhurst gym) knocked on my door to say that there was a cat stuck down a drain and he had heard I had lost one of mine. I went to get the cat basket while my husband went outside. I needn’t have bothered. On hearing his voice Sooty had leapt into his arms and he was already carrying her back home. We are horrified that Sooty found herself trapped in a storm train on the busy A267, how anyone heard her is a miracle! We are so grateful to the passers by that heard her and to our local community that were brilliant in so many ways. Sooty is home, tired, a little thinner and under house arrest for the next few days! Cam Nichols.

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – October 2020 HORAM PLAY AREA, SKATE PARK AND THIRD AGE EQUIPMENT The play area continues to be very busy, especially at weekends, and users are reminded of the social distancing regulations, especially with the news that infection rates for COVID-19 are on the increase (at the time of going to press). Users are reminded to be considerate with the disposal of litter and, where possible, take their litter home with them. Guidance for users are attached.

GAP PROJECT – HORAM VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

HPC would like to point out that the questionnaire in last months’ edition for a GAP Project is the idea of the Village Hall Management Committee. The Parish Council has no involvement at this stage.

EMPTYING OF LITTER BINS

Wealden District Council’s contractor is introducing a new scheduling system for managing the crews that empty litter and dog waste bins. Although this system will make the service more reliable, there appears to be some teething issues that need to be resolved. Hopefully these will have been rectified before this goes to press.

COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY (CIL)

Following on from the article for suggestions for using CIL monies in last month’s Diary only two responses have been received.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

The deadline for receipt of applications for Community Grants has now closed.

PARISH COUNCIL OFFICE

The Parish Council office is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings from 9.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. Social distancing measures are in place and masks are required to be worn should you need to enter the office. The Clerk is available other times and can be contacted either by e-mail: clerk@horam.com or telephone her mobile on 07900 576236.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS - All meeting dates, including full Council, Finance and Planning are listed on the Parish Notice Board, the website and in the Horam Centre window. These meetings will continue to be held remotely until Government restrictions are lifted. However, members of the public can join the meeting by requesting a link to do so from the Clerk at least 24 hours before the meeting. HORAM MEMORIAL STONE - PLAQUES

Parents must read this guidance and ensure their families follow it carefully for the safety of their children and others.

This equipment is checked regularly for damage and wear and tear.

This is shared equipment, used at your own risk.

Do not use this equipment if you or any member of your household has Coronavirus symptoms, or are self-isolating.

You are advised that children should not use this equipment if they are clinically or extremely clinically vulnerable.

Make sure you have hand sanitiser with you before entering the playground.

Encourage everyone in your family to wash their hands with hand sanitiser regularly, and as a minimum, before and after using the playground.

Encourage children to avoid touching their faces

You MUST maintain social distancing from others unless they are from the same household - current advice is to maintain at least 1 metre and consider wearing a face mask.

October Gardening Diary

' For every fog in October, a snow in winter.'

The piece of gardening lore quoted above couldn't in any way have been more inaccurate for this last twelve months but as we are fond of old traditional proverbs, we are resolved to repeat it annually until it comes true. Rain, wind and cloud characterise our weather in October, though we may hope for an Indian summer about the middle of the month when a short spell of mellow anticyclonic weather often occurs. We should be taking full advantage of these gentle spells to finish up our autumn digging. This may be facilitated by any impending 'Lock-downs'. Deadline Trafalgar Day. All species of weeds made a strong showing in autumn, so that hoe should be doing brisk work; for great mischief they will do if left unchecked at this late season. We may now make a start with tidying up the perennials in the herbaceous border, some gardeners prefer to leave the old topgrowth on the plant for winter protection whilst some like to clear away the old growth once flowering is finished, leaving to leave a more shipshape and tidy border. A tidier border feels healthier and less prone to harbouring disease and mould over the winter and also allows the soil to be more effectively forked over. Dahlias may be lifted once the foliage has blackened, there is little point in leaving them in beyond the end of the month as tuber growth will be completed by then. Around the middle of the month we can may start planting out wallflowers, polyanthus, forget-me-nots, Sweet Williams, Canterbury bells, foxgloves and other similar plants which are grown as biennials or for a spring bedding display. Before putting these in, the soil should be dug to a spades' depth. Fertiliser may be added but only of the slow releasing types, i.e bone meal and not a quick release nitrogen based spring or summer fertiliser. The last cut of the lawn will now take place, the blade height may be lifted; no golfing green cuts in October. The vegetable plot. Push ahead with autumn digging. We dwelt on dung and his cousins at length in the last issue but it is worth reminding ourselves again that September and October are the months to dig in old horse droppings or compost, especially important for brassicas, not too much for the root crops or you may end up with amusingly shaped vegetables next year. Bastard trench heavy ground, throwing in newspaper, Christmas jumpers, gossip magazines, sharp sand, compost and rats; anything to improve the texture and workability of our clay. Only after a morning of bastard trenching may we, without guilt or self-reproach, indulge in that long pipe in the potting shed. Make the most of the last of the Runner and French beans by picking all sizeable beans daily, especially if frost is forecast. Autumn sown broad beans are a must, a sturdy two inch bean plant seen pushing through at Christmas makes a happy sight and bodes well for an early and black fly resistant crop in spring. In anticipation of rain and gale, it is very important to firmly stake Brussels sprouts. All brassicas need to be firmly planted; they greatly resent any movement or looseness around the roots. Top growth of Jerusalem artichokes can be cut down but no need to lift the roots as they may be dug as required. Beware of a surfeit of this root in polite company. ging in plenty of old manure with a handful of bonemeal. It pays to do this well in advance of planting to allow the mix to fester down and the air to escape, likewise new rose beds should be thoroughly prepared, especially so on our clay soil. Rambler roses may now be pruned and trained, the aim is to cut out as much of the growth that has already flowered, those that make strong growth from the base should have the old stems cut out at ground level whilst those which make little basal growth should have the old growth cut back to a point just above that at which the strong new growth starts. Now that the last of the Australian wickets have fallen, we may, with a sigh, bestir ourselves to switch off the wireless set, knock out our pipes and end our ruminations in the shed and get out into the garden, there are jobs to do wherever we look and we are losing three minutes of light a day, so we can ill afford any tardiness in the garden.

Keeping Horam tidy Local resident Virginnia signed Horam Litterpickers up to Keep Britain Tidy's Campaign last month. They always welcome more volunteers but advisewe are not a social group going round in a mob like some other local groups. Seven volunteers are active at the moment covering the village centre, Chiddingly Road, Grange Close, Marle Green, Vines Cross Road, Cuckoo Trail steps, Horebeech Lane etc. Their Vines Cross helper is out of action at the moment. Wealden DC will be supplying more bags for litter collection. There have been complaints about the overfull litter bins around the village, Wealden District Council‘s contractor have brought in a new scheduling system for emptying of bins, which appears to have some teething issues!

Local Development Update Water issues

Today as I write this, our drive has developed another pipe burst that South East Water have had to come out and fix. This is the 3rd time in a couple of years. Thankfully, this time it wasn’t as dramatic, last time our entire drive erupted and had to be replaced by SE Water. The men doing the repair work advised that a combination of the age of the network, the increased demands upon it from more households and the decrease in rainfall was causing the Sussex clay to contract and crack the Victorian cast iron network. Their job is to ‘patch & repair’, which ultimately leads to strain being put on another weaker area of the network. The increased development in the area sees large attenuation ponds to soak up groundwater, diversion of underground springs and an additional burden on already struggling network.

People buying homes on new developments

It occurred to me that although I know I represent the views of some of the local community, it is definitely not all and the last thing I would want to do is make the residents of new developments feel unwelcome. You are more than welcome, we understand what attracted you to the area, the rolling fields and rural life, the opportunity to move away from a crowded town or city to the country. However, the more that development of fields happens for houses, the less rural the area becomes and the lifestyle you bought into starts to disappear. We need fields to support our food production and our local habitat. Messing with that brings consequences for existing and new residents. But please understand that the village welcomes you, the frustration with over development of the area is NOT directed at you.

A planning system that favour developers Cauldavon (up to 60 homes, Horebeech Lane)

In late September, residents who had objected to the application above got some good news. The application had been withdrawn by the applicant. However, it is wise not to celebrate this ‘win’. A new application will have to have new objections to be considered for rejection. All previous objections, regardless of how close the new plans are to the old application will be disregarded. This happens with many applications. Asking residents to comment again on an application that bears a close resemblance to the previous application is a challenge. We are not able to object to Wealden District Council about this, we have to accept it. Just one more example of how one sided the planning system is in favour of developers. What can we do? Pampered in Horam I recently had the pleasure of laying down for half an hour in the lovely, calm surroundings of Serenity Beauty's new treatment room at the Horam Emporium. I hadn't snuck in there for a quick catnap but, to have a gel pedicure. Charlotte Blackham who runs the beauty salon was previously at Hare Kutz in Horam but since August has a brand, spanking new salon in the Horam Emporium. The usual level of care I lavish on my feet is to ignore them! Other than cutting the nails, sanding the rough skin underside with builders sandpaper and occasionally whacking on some varnish if the weather allows them to be exposed, I am a kind of low maintenance type! So having someone make my weird feet look pretty(ish) was a real treat. Charlotte gave me a vast selection of gel colours to choose from and I went for a vibrant shell pink. After soaking my feet in warm water and prepping them, I got to lie back and relax whilst Charlotte worked her magic. Even though the salon is in the middle of the Horam Emporium, it is a little oasis of calm and Charlotte is very good at what she does. I ended up dear reader with feet that looked cared for and feminine (still weird, but she can't work miracles!). He said " For sure, the highlight would be receiving the Wealden Hero award, not knowing we were even nominated, that was definitely a great feeling! To know it’s the customer's voice who gave us this award is special!". We asked him what mistakes he has made that have been valuable for learning? He said " Mistakes - we’ve definitely made a few! Probably my worst mistake would be ordering when tired and over ordering significantly, luckily it worked out for us but it was a week of winging it! It’s obviously a lot harder when we over order, because we are subject to dates with fresh produce or even under ordering!. I have forgotten to order at times, now I have to prompt myself every evening with a reminder!. I have even accidentally picked up the wrong produce from the abattoir. I’ve learned to slow it down & stop rushing, that’s when the mistakes are made! We commented that it was obvious that he has a strong work ethic, and asked what drives him. He said " What drives me - definitely my family, I want to be able to use the shop to spend more time with them in the future. Also my Nan, she always said I would do well at something, so it’s nice to put the shop to that at difficult times - it definitely gives me motivation! We asked him if he had to start all over again, what would he do differently? He said " I probably wouldn’t do anything differently, the shop has gone from strength to strength! It’s a pleasure knowing genuine, quality produce will eventually speak for itself. "

He said " I would definitely be keen to expand the business & get my Mrs involved in the shop, hopefully even sooner! We are running out of space! I’m always thinking of something unique to keep us a little different from our competition. There’s definitely changes to come, but Horam is where we want to stay!

A message from Nus Ghani (MP) about local businesses supporting the community. Covid-19 is the most profound societal, economic and public health challenge since the Second World War. It has taken a great toll on our everyday way of life and posed a great danger to our lives. However, the outbreak has also brought out the very best in human nature and our community spirit. The volunteer-led collective efforts from Wealden residents to fight the pandemic and support their local communities have been astonishing. In July, I launched the “Wealden Hero Award” to extend my gratitude to Wealden residents for their extraordinary efforts and to celebrate their unyielding determination to support the community throughout the crisis. From the overwhelming number of nominations I received, I know that so many people across Wealden have made personal sacrifices and put their own lives at risk to help others. I had the privilege to meet some of them throughout the summer. Despite the difficulties that local businesses have faced, our village stores in Upper Dicker, Laughton, Maresfield, Five Ash Down and Hartfield have remained opened and worked tirelessly to provide essentials to the community. Our small family businesses, such as the Perryhill Farm and Davies & Sons butchers in Horam have gone above and beyond to supply local produce and provide deliveries to vulnerable customers. The wonderful English Soap Company has donated thousands of their products to foodbanks, hospitals, care homes and those in need. Our pubs, such as the Buxted Inn and Hailsham’s King’s Head Cacklebury, have served as hubs for volunteers to operate from and offer lifeline services to those shielding. Our community radio stations Uckfield FM and Hailsham FM have been instrumental in sharing latest information and guidance. New friendships have been created through wonderful projects such as “Scrubbers United” and the “Sewing Crow-Bees”, which have brought together volunteers of all abilities to create PPE and face coverings for frontline workers and the community. New community leaders have emerged across the constituency in an effort to organise local response and mobilise a team of volunteers to support those in need. I have been truly heartened to see so many acts of kindness throughout this unprecedented time and I cannot thank all these wonderful individuals enough for ensuring that our vulnerable neighbours had familiar faces to turn to for support and for going above and beyond throughout the crisis. The responsibility to keep each other safe has become a defining feature of our lives and I am so proud that Wealden has set a fine example.
