Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary December 2021
Female led modern funeral directors five star reviews.
Dear Readers, And here we are! December 2021 draws an eventful and bumpy year to a close. We hope that you survived it and that you are feeling optimistic for 2022? This month brings the welcome return of lots of festive events! Not to be missed is Horam's Christmas Fun Night on Thursday 2nd December - free glass of wine for adults and free gift for the kids and don't let the kids miss out on Santa's Grotto at Horam Village Hall on Saturday 4th December from 10-5pm. Santa & his elves, reindeer, festive music, rides and a Christmas market - see P10 for more information. Don't forget to get your turkey and other Christmas meat needs booked in with Davies & Son, Horam's brilliant butcher and browse the Diary for lots of local retailers to help with your gift inspiration. Let's keep Christmas 2021 local by supporting local traders. Boris's recent plea about climate change has still yet to be reflected in the governments's planning policy - we are still being dismayed by the number of developments on green space in Wealden. Please continue to comment on applications, it all helps and we have a duty of care to protect our green fields for future generations. Kind regards,
wn xx Lucy & Da Joint Editors

Are you feeling stuck? Michelle helps bereaved from feeling floored and frazzled on their grief journey to fulfilled and fabulous. The morning of February 21st 2004 my life was to change forever. My little sister had unexpectedly died in her sleep from SUDEP. You may know me as ‘The lady’ that turns Heathfield Purple to raise awareness of Purple Day. Ever since that awful day, I have made it my life purpose to guide those bereaved through their grief journey. For years I was a highly functioning depressed Mum and wife, hiding behind a happy mask. I was diagnosed with PTSD and took antidepressants for years. Healing from depression, anxiety and 15 years of antidepressants was the hardest but the most rewarding experience. I help others heal through their grief and give them the tools to recognise what their thoughts and feelings are telling them. Trauma is NOT the event itself, but how one reacts to the event. A loss will affect family members differently and the way they ‘cope’ will be unique to them. One's resilience to healing will also be dependent on other traumas they may have faced in the past. The autonomic nervous systems job is to keep us safe following Trauma and this is why just ‘talking’ it through will not help. Your body will literally react to what you tell it through your thoughts. Michelle is a Trauma informed ™ Coach, specialising in grief & loss. But also helps clients in their loss from divorce, separation and feeling overwhelmed and stuck in the past. I’m excited to share with you that ‘THE GRIEF JOURNEY’ subscription box is launching in the New Year, a monthly box to help you through your loss.

The Season of Giving Many local people will have been touched by the amazing support St Wilfrid's Hospice in Eastbourne have given to their friends & family that need their care. In our day to day work, we at White Feather Funerals see the incredible work they do for the families we meet. That is why we are proud to be supporting a brilliant new fundraising initiative from them this Christmas called 'The Giving Tree'. You can choose what you would like to donate and who you would like it in memory of and then they will hang a star or a dove on their tree at their Eastbourne site. We are offering our very own Giving Tree at our premises on Heathfield High Street too, where you can donate to St Wilfrid's or select another tag that you would like to fulfill such as donate blood, reach out to a friend or donate to a food bank. It's simple - follow the instructions on the hanging gift tags. You can provide St Wilfrid’s donations directly to Dawn or Lucy at White Feather Funerals either a cash or cheque donation or alternatively you can donate directly to the hospice in someone's memory to www.stwhospice.org/ event/lights-of-love Thank you for making a difference this Christmas
Your local, contemporary & independent, female led funeral directors. “Very passionate and nothing was too much to help me arrange. Dawn and Lucy are wonderful and showed so much empathy throughout. Mark the celebrant was amazing and listened to everything I advised to incorporate into the service. Thank you so much you guys the support you gave me was excellent through this very difficult time.” Miss N
White Feather FUNERALS
“I did not want the formal and usual crematorium funeral. Following a private committal, we were fortunate to be able to have a garden service and celebration at home, in the garden that my husband loved. Dawn and Lucy made this possible and organised the whole event with great sympathy and professionalism.” Mrs E
“From start to finish Lucy and Dawn were phenomenal at such an awful time. My mother would have loved them and they made sure she had the best send off. Thank you for everything. ” Mr S
“I really can’t speak more highly of Lucy and Dawn at White Feathers, they were brilliant and couldn’t have been more helpful during a tough time for our family. They were always there throughout the whole process to provide advice and guidance, with a kind, gentle touch and great attention to detail. It was such a comfort for us all to know that Mum was in the care of two compassionate and professional ladies, and along with the wonderful celebrant, Mark, and beautiful flower arrangement created by Ana, we were able to give Mum the loveliest of send offs. Our thanks again to you all.” Mrs S

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – December 2021 @ www.horam.com www.facebook.com/horamvillage
HORAM PARISH COUNCIL DONATES TO HORAM VILLAGE CHRISTMAS FUN NIGHT
Horam Parish Council has made a donation, this year, of £320 towards the Horam Village Christmas Fun Night which will be held on Thursday 2nd December. This goes towards providing the treasure hunt prizes, Christmas lights as well as the Christmas Tree on the corner of the High Street and Little London Road. As in previous years, your Parish Council is very happy to support this enjoyable village event and will, in addition, be paying for the band so there will be music on the night.
PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE – We hope that you will have noticed the new Cherry Tree
which has been recently planted in the Memorial Garden at the corner of High Street and Hillside Drive. Not only are trees part of our native, natural world and fascinating to look at as they change through the seasons, but each tree makes a contribution towards capturing carbon, so residents are also encouraged to plant a tree in their own gardens, if space permits.
HORAM PLAY PARK - UPDATE
The newly sown grass is sprouting well and has had it’s first cut (perhaps trim would be a better word) which helps to encourage root growth. It will need a few more trims, and more root growth, before it has grown sufficiently to allow re-opening of the Play Park. The Parish Council is liaising closely with the contractor as we are keen to re-open the Play Park as soon as it is ready. The skate board park remains open.
FINGER POSTS, BENCHES AND BINS
Finger posts are an integral part of our rural landscape, they guide the traveller and, in their own way, are as distinctive as a sculpture. Horam Parish Council has had the finger posts at the junction of Laundry Lane at Marle Green and at the junction of Ballsocks Lane by the pond in Vines Cross repainted; the one at the junction of Vines Cross Road and Laundry Lane is being worked on. Your Parish Council has also purchased a new bench-seat, this will be installed soon at the corner of Laundry Lane and Horebeech Lane to replace the one that became unsafe. The ‘dog-poo’ bin on the Cuckoo Trail and Downline Close has also been replaced by Horam Parish Council.
REMEMBER NOVEMBER – A RECAP
Horam Parish Council donated £20,000 towards a new minibus for Age Concern. This donation not only helped towards the purchase of this much needed minibus, but it enabled a higher specification minibus to be delivered some 6 months earlier than had initially been expected. It has been in service since 1st November, you may well have seen it driving around.
OUR HORAM PCSO
If you wish to bring anything to the attention of our PCSO (Police Community Support Officer) for Horam (Cathy Gilling) she can be contacted by email on catherine.gilling@sussex.pnn.police.uk However, for emergencies contact the Police by phoning 999.
PHOTOS, COMMENTS & VOLUNTEERS ARE ALSO NEEDED
Please take photos of the places/buildings in Horam Parish that you like, and also those that you do not like; then send with your comments to the Clerk (email below), the more photos you send the better. Volunteers are also needed for the steering group to help in the delivery of the Neighbourhood Plan to shape the Horam Parish of the future, PARISH CLERK - can be contacted either by e-mail: clerk@horam.com or 07900 576236. The Parish Clerk, RFO and the Councillors wish all residents of Horam Parish

COMMUNITY Young at Heart have had another busy month joined by Maynards Green Primary School, Parkside Primary School for the first time - thrilled to have the children on board, Punnetts Town Primary School and Skippers Hill. We have continued our poetry theme with the schools with both the children and members reading to one another. Little Tinkers Nursery School have now rejoined us for fun and games. The children bring so much pleasure and distraction to our members. We have been fortunate enough to have craft supplied by Cherry Spring Studio, Horam who are assisting on a weekly basis. Susie and Jed Franks joined us to talk about their bee keeping experiences and we made beeswax wraps with members. With Christmas fast approaching if anyone would like to join us for wreath making or Christmas lunch please get in touch with Rachel 07971032667 - nobody should be lonely! December Gardening Diary ' When dark December glooms the day and takes our Autumn joys away' Sir Walter Scott. Well not a bit of it, these may be the sentiments of a gloomy Scot, mired in his Arctic gloom, but we take heart from the month in which the sun is reborn and, though the worst rigors of winter are still ahead of us, there is the promise of rebirth ahead, once celebrated in the Roman Saturnalia and the Germanic Yuletide hunts, now personified by a girthful and jolly chap in a chimney. As in November, the weather this month is rarely an incentive to be out there upside down in a border, but the garden is a relentless tyrant, which may only be tamed by seizing every chance to press on. The edges of lawns may have been eroded away or died back from being smothered by overgrowth from the borders, lying leaves, or the depredations of children. The easiest way to make the edges good is to roll a length of turf along the edge and cut around it with a sharp knife, then roll it up, the outlined shape may now be excavated to an inch depth, the base broken down to a tilth and the new turf rolled back into place, a board to stand on will help bed the turf down, expelling any air, there should be no air pockets, especially under the edges. New plantings should be checked from time to time as frost or wind may have loosened the roots and loose plantings rarely survive; we must always have our mallet about our person to firm up any loose stakes. Any brassicas in the vegetable plot should likewise be checked for firm footing; brassicas greatly resent any looseness around their feet. Frost and gales in November will have seen to the last of the roses, thus we may reduce the top growth back a little and remove frosted flowers and hips, this will reduce wind resistance and present a more orderly appearance in the rose garden. This is not the main pruning, which may be done at the end of winter (Though many gardeners do this before Christmas) The harvesting of Brussels sprouts should be in full swing, starting from the bottom up and leaving the green tops until last. In the event of an 'Arctic blast ' being forecast, it may be worthwhile digging up some leeks and parsnips and heeling them into a trench so as to avoid having to harvest by hammer and bolster. Sometime between Alamein Day and the Ides of the month we may beg, borrow or otherwise purloin a number of twigs from some of the more forward of the trees and shrubs, including yellow flowering jasmine, willow, winter flowering viburnums, berberis, hawthorn, witch hazel and contorted hazel, these, when brought into a warm room and put in water should be in flower by Christmas, hinting at the rebirth and new life just around the corner. The No-mans' land behind the bonfire heap may supply teasels, whilst sea thistle and artichoke heads saved from last month will make for a fine Christmas display when spray-painted by the more responsible of the junior members in the family. The dried seed pods of Honesty make a fine sight shivering in a vase on the piano. Whilst the keen gardener will have been digging over the soil since Battle of Britain Day, it is not too late to keep up the digging when conditions allow. The more soil we can get exposed to the weather the better. Areas reserved for hardy annuals should be dug over as well, but unless the soil is very poor there is no need to dig in compost or manure as annuals flower best on poorer soil. Now most of the leaves have dropped, we may appreciate nature's architecture in the boughs and burls of the trees around us whilst also taking worried note of deciduous trees and shrubs that are starting to crowd over the lawns and borders, this encroachment eventually leads to a thin, mossy lawn and straggling shrubs straining for the dwindling light, in such cases we must be ruthless with the chain saw and loppers; Nature is constantly trying to crowd us out, thus in the time of the Egg kings the quality of a Saxon was measured by his willingness to strip to his badger pelt underwear in all seasons and with halberd in hand, wage unceasing battle on the forest around him.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Wealden District Council continue to ignore flooding issues caused by overdevelopment. With applications in to build close to the Pevensey Marshes and other land , discharging sewage from overflows from new developments onto it and predictions that it will be under the sea by 2050; Wealden's 2019 climate emergency declaration appears to be is just words, just like the governments. Latest threat to flooding in Horam is WD/2021/2458/MAJ, demolition of house and erection of 39 houses and associated roads and landscaping from Whitehall Homes. This site sites above properties on in Horam High street heading toward Maynards Green, adjacent to Bridge Farm light industrial estate. The land at Linda House has large ponds, one specifically large one already having been filled in previously to prevent flooding to commercial and residential buildings and land below on the B203. Fed by springs, where will this water go when the ponds are regularly breached. For nearly 30 years the pond has been flooding, draining onto Bridge Farm Industrial Estate, causing sewage to flow into the stream Waldron Ghyll and wash across the land at Stream Farm. In this year alone it has flooded more than 5 times. The owners of Stream Farm have appealed to the Environment Agency, Rivers Trust, Flood Risk Management for help and yet are still experiencing this. We already see the bottom of the hill flood regularly now, how much more water can it take? Please take your time to pass comment on this application that will negatively impact residents and those travelling through the village towards Heathfield.

Services this Christmas: Do you sometimes feel like the world is broken? Given the last 18 months, with the grief and disorientation of the pandemic, racial tensions, climate crisis, acts of terrorism, and countless other serious issues besides, ‘broken’ certainly seems to describe the world in which we live. And with this as the backdrop, Christmas then comes along as something of a gear shift with all its lights, adverts, sleigh-bell soundtracks and promise of merriment and good cheer. ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly’? The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!? Or a consumer-aimed coping strategy built around distraction?
