WHAT’S ON IN THE COMMUNITY
With the amazing weather we’ve been having, we’ve been making the most of our minibus and the “great outdoors”, this has included school visits to Bedes to bake, Maynards Green drawing caricatures, Five Ashes to see their Matilda rehearsal! Joining us has been Punnetts Town joined by Hands on History and Blackboys for reading and games. We joined Little Tinkers Nursery School to see Mens Sheds in action and joined the children for afternoon tea. Other outings have included a trip to Birling Gap - a trip to the beach which some members hadn’t done in years, visited mares and foals and a trip to Hilliers Garden Centre! Keeping everyone busy and plenty to talk about is key to the wellbeing of our members. Nobody should be bored and lonely! Please contact Rachel 07971032667 if you feel a friend or relative might be interested. Kindly sponsored by Wealden Funeral Services and Trevaskis Consulting Ltd.

Formerly part of Heatherden Estate, the 40 acre woodland site was bequeathed to the Cross-In-Hand Amenities Society and was renamed Darch`s Wood in 1994 in honour of Mrs Margaret Marr Darch who wanted the woodland to be for the benefit and enjoyment of the public.

The Amenities Society was formed in 1970 to protect historically important buildings and lands of Cross-In-Hand.
The Society’s role in managing the wood is to restore, enhance and maintain the woodland, which involves the removal of invasive laurel and rhododendron, clearing areas around veteran trees, and making good the footpaths. The natural habitat is being enhanced by retaining areas of dead wood for small animals and insects, clearing silt from the pond and watercourses inhabited by fish and aquatic creatures and by the planting of native tree saplings. Some activities cease during spring and summer to encourage bird nesting. An ornamental bridge, benches and fencing are being repaired and maintained.
The benefits of the Society`s efforts can already been seen by the return of bluebells, common spotted orchids and other woodland flowers. These attract insects such as the speckled wood butterfly and golden ringed dragonfly.
The long term aim of the Society is to reverse decades of neglect and to bring Darch`s Wood back to being a `gem` of natural woodland that anyone can visit for a stroll, a picnic or to walk the dog.
The Society is a charity and all of its members are volunteers. Some volunteers form a `work party` that go to the woodland once a week to help with the clearance and maintenance work. The Society relies on a small membership fee, a long term Forestry Commission grant and generous donations of funds and materials needed to carry on with the necessary work. There is a lot to do.
If you would like to get involved by joining the Society, making a donation or joining the work party please get in touch by visiting the Society`s web site - chamsoc.org.uk - and email the Membership Secretary, Mike Baker.
