Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary March 2021

Female led funeral directors

Dear Readers, Thankfully, we finally welcome the Spring more enthusiastically than we have ever done. As I type this I am fixating on March the 8th being the D Day for the UK. A day when kids go back to school, parents go back to work (if it still exists) and life gets back to some semblance of normality. I yearn for two pages of events for our long forgotten and sorely missed What’s On pages and I acknowledge how deep we have all had to dig to keep going through these challenging months. We have got one What’s On ad this month for the return after last month’s success, of The Big Christ Church Zoom On-line Quiz on 26th March, see P16 for details. But herald the Spring, the new growth it brings, some warm sunshine, the opportunity to possibly meet up with friends & family outside. We all ponder on the domestic passport idea currently being discussed by the powers that be, and how those with immunisations will be able to go freely to shops, restaurants, cinemas and other public places. But that leaves those low down on the immunisation priority list on the back foot. And what about those who don’t want to be immunised for fear of the negative affects it could bring? Right now, in our world, navigating the new normal is incredibly daunting. I hope that the longer days and more clement weather enable us to experience the freedom we have so sorely missed. So with this in mind, this month’s issue sees some interesting contributions from and about local people. Don’t miss the story of Horam’s oldest man on P39, discover new walks you haven’t yet done on P22 and hear about a local dog breeder who has competed at Crufts on P14. We salute the staff and management in our local care homes for caring for the most vulnerable in our community and keeping them safe. We thank local community members who have gone above and beyond to offer support to local people – Sarah Cook, Darren Casey from D J Casey Treecare and local men Lou O’Kill, Jason Lindfield for preparing and taking down the village Christmas tree, plus Tricia Marsh from All Dressed Up for organising it. We thank local healthcare staff for immunising us and caring for people in their own homes. There are many other local people who we don’t have names for to thank, who have delivered supplies to neighbours, walked dogs and checked in with the lonely and in need in our village. Your kindness has given us all hope for the future, so thank you. Keep safe and keep looking out for each other!

Vaccine Update from Nusrat Ghani MP Covid-19 Vaccine Target Hit We have reached our goal of offering a vaccine to the top four priority groups by 15 February, meaning over 15 million most vulnerable people have been offered the jab! The Sussex vaccination programme continues in full swing and nearly 450,000 vaccinations have been given to date. This fantastic progress marks an important milestone in our fightback against the virus and each dose administered represents a triumph over the virus. The rollout has been a great success across Wealden, and I want to thank everyone involved in this huge national effort, especially the Sussex Health and Care Partnership, East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, our local NHS leaders in East Sussex, all GP practices in Wealden and volunteers who have made the vaccine rollout happen.

Who has had the jab in East Sussex? 92% of all 80s, 92% of over 75s, 90% of over 70s & 87% of all extremely clinically vulnerableall eligible care home residents, with the exception of those care homes with Covid outbreaks, who will be offered the vaccine at earliest opportunity deliveries of the vaccines continue to homebound patients Vaccines are our way out of this pandemic, and I would like to urge everyone who has been invited to book an appointment but not yet done so, please do take up the offer as soon as possible. You can contact your GP, book online via the NHS website https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/coronavirus-vaccination/book-coronavirus-vaccination/, or call 119 free of charge, anytime between 7am and 11pm, seven days a week. Vaccinations now offered to over 65s and “at risk” groups From mid February, people aged over 65 and individuals aged 16-64 in an “at risk” group are also starting to receive letters inviting them to book their vaccination appointment. Please note that the timing of when people will get the vaccination depends on the availability of the vaccine. This is the largest vaccination programme ever undertaken and it will take some time to get to everyone.

New Testing Site I am pleased that the testing capacity across Wealden continues to expand. In addition to site at Croft Road car park in Crowborough, a new Local Test Site has opened at the South Road Car Park (BN27 2AU) in Hailsham. Anyone experiencing a high temperature, a new, continuous cough, or a loss or change to sense of smell or taste should book a test at www.nhs.uk/coronavirus, by calling 119, or using the NHS Covid-19 app.

National Booking Service opened up to health and care staff The majority of eligible health and care staff in Sussex have already received their first vaccination. Those that have yet to take up the offer are now able to book their appointment at one of the vaccination centres or pharmacy-led vaccination services through the national NHS booking service website or by calling 119.

Update on Covid cases and infection rates Fantastic news! New cases in Wealden continue to decline from 316 to 197 cases reported on 3rd and 10th February respectively. I continue to hold regular surgeries for local businesses and residents to offer help and to ensure that their concerns are reflected in government policy. If you need urgent assistance regarding coronavirus, please email me at: nusrat.ghani.mp@parliament.uk and provide as much detail as possible about your query.

WHEN IS A MIN PIN NOT A MIN PIN? Hello, my name is Colin and I live in Horam with my wife, Hazel, our two dogs and eighty year old tortoise. Those of you who use the Cuckoo Trail or Horebeech Lane may have seen us with our two small black and tan dogs, and maybe asked yourself, what are those breed of dogs? Minature Dobermans? Long Legged Daschunds? Minature Pinschers? Pekenese (as some family asked us at a service station on the M1 some years ago)? Or even, are they dogs? Well, they are in fact English Toy Terriers (Black & Tan) to give them their full title. The clue is in the name, as I tried to explain to a lady in Eastbourne once: “oh, I have one of those except it’s a reddish colour” I am afraid you do not, as they are only black & tan and the markings are almost identical on all of them. The English Toy Terrier is probably one of the oldest native breeds of dog and most certainly the smallest. Back in the 19th century their prowess at rat killing was highly prized and the small black terriers were matched dog against dog in the “rat pits” of that period. When that sport was made illegal their popularity continued and they were exhibited at fledgling dog shows at that time. Unfortunately they fell into decline and are now on the Kennel Clubs list of vulnerable breeds with only around 100 being registered each year. We are fortunate enough to have four of these wonderful little dogs in our family and last year, our little girl, Lily, was given Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts. She had already won three Best Puppy in Show at Open Shows and two Group One in Toy Puppy Groups at Championship Shows. So we are very proud of her and our grandson, Jack, who expertly handles her in the show ring. And Lily’s mother is due another litter of puppies at the end of February; so we do have something to look forward to in these topsy turvy difficult times. In the meantime, keep safe and say “hello” if you see us around about Horam.

How are you?

It's a question we all ask each other, and we usually say 'I'm fine'. We say this, even when we are far from feeling fine. This last year has been challenging for all people, regardless of their age or their status. Some of us have lost loved ones, lost jobs, had to become teachers whilst working from home, experienced boredom, loneliness, anxiety and fear. It is easy to be consumed by all of the negativity, the restrictions on our freedom and the lack of something to look forward to.

Give gratitude

There are many different ways we can try to change our mindset, some of them really small things. Try writing a journal each day, recording the things that made you smile, your favourite memory of the day, a funny thing your child said, the people you said hello to on your walk that day, a sweet email or message from a friend, a small act of kindness someone showed you. Make an effort to dress up to stay in on a Friday night (check out FrockUp Friday group on Facebook), have Zoom drinks with friends, pull a team together for The Big Quiz from Christ Church (it's free), put some favourite songs on and have a kitchen disco, dancing and laughing are proven ways to lift your mood. Go for a walk, go for a run, do an online exercise class where no-one can see you sweat! Re-read a favourite book and rewatch a favourite film. Cuddle your kids, your dog. Have a bath, put clean bedding on your bed and have an early night listening to an audio book, rearrange your sock drawer, catalogue all those old photographs in old fashioned photo albums and get your kids to write silly captions. And if the things you try don't work, remember that tomorrow is another day. Sending hugs out to every reader.

Fourth Big Christ Church Zoom Quiz (and it’s free!!)

Friday 26th March 2021

Doors open (online) at 7.30pm for 8.00pm (10.00pm finish)

Teams: up to 6 members (Zoom - so local or geographically spread) Rounds: 4 question rounds + 1 picture round (Questions will be pitched at an ‘easy’ level but multigenerational teams are the key to doing well!)

What you need to do NEXT: • choose your team name - get your team together (2 to 6 members) • compile a list of team members & email addresses used for login to Zoom • email team & login details to: events@christchurchhoram.org - by 24/03/21 • final notes & details of the Zoom Meeting ID & Passcode will then be sent out

Are you fed-up with doing the same old walks? Given our only outdoor pastime over the next few months has been confined to walking locally, you may have exhausted all the local walks you know. Walking in Sussex www.walkinginengland.co.uk/ sussex is the website for you! With hundreds of walks to download and print, free, it also has books of walks, contact details for all the walking groups in the county and much more. Whether you want to walk on your own or with a group all the information is there in one place. Founder, John Harris said ‘There is so much walking information on the web but it is difficult to find. Walking in Sussex (part of the Walking in England suite of websites (www.walkinginengland.co.uk) – one for each county in England) has brought it together in one place so whether you are walking from home, or away on holiday, you will be able to find a walk suitable for you’. With walks from half a mile to twelve miles plus long, and a note of suitability for pushchairs and wheelchairs, everyone can find a walk to enjoy.

Christ Church Horam - Supporting Community In these unprecedented times, there are many in our community suffering unbearable loss, separation, hardship and loneliness. We are limited by what contact is currently permitted, but we believe prayer can bring strength, relationship and restoration. We can offer you someone to talk to, someone to offer friendship, someone to pray with you or for you.

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – March 2021 HORAM PLAY AREA, SKATE PARK AND THIRD AGE EQUIPMENT

Due to vandalism and parents lifting their children over the fence to use the equipment, the play park remains open. Users are reminded that, despite the success of the vaccine rollout, and the decrease in the number of COVID cases people are reminded to keep to social distancing regulations, wear a face mask and use hand sanitiser. The ground is still very wet due to the unprecedented amount of rain that has been falling and users are asked to take care.

PARISH COUNCIL VACANCIES

Vacancies for parish councillors exist. If you would be interested in serving as a parish councillor then please feel free to contact the Clerk to inform her of your interest or submit an application or cv direct to her. If you need any further information before committing yourself then please either contact her or Michael Cousins, Chairman of the Council.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN

It is a year ago since so many of you completed the Neighbourhood Plan Questionnai and our consultants re drawing up the historic character of the Parish, however due to Covid-19 we have been unable to hold any community meetings. In order to progress our Parish Neighbourhood Plan we need to have further community engagement. Please can you assist by participating in Placecheck. Placecheck is the simplest way of finding out what people think and starting the process of making change happen. Placechecks have been carried out in the early stages of neighbourhood planning and a wide range of local initiatives. Please take part as we need to be able to demonstrate to external assessors that the plan is influenced by your feelings and opinions. The Placecheck web link: www.placecheck.info/maps/horam

PARISH COUNCIL OFFICE

Due to COVID-19 the offices will be on restricted hours. However, the Parish Clerk is available and can be contacted either by e-mail: clerk@horam.com or telephone her mobile on 07900 576236.

Please help stop more fields on Horebeech Lane being made into housing estates. This application WD/2020/2063/MAJ was dismissed by the government Inspector last year as being unsuitable and unsustainable. The application has been resubmitted by Chailey Homes and has dropped from 58 to 51 dwellings and the position of one house altered slightly. No evidence of any other changes to improve it's sustainability are evident. If you haven’t yet commented on this application for another housing estate opposite Rosemead on Horebeech Lane and backing onto the Cuckoo Trail (where a huge badger sett exists), please do as comments needed ASAP before it goes to Wealden South Planning Committee. If Wealden give this application the green light, the land at Cauldavon immediately next door to Rosemead will be the next estate. Between the bridge on Horebeech Lane and Laundry Lane will resemble a small town! Visit https://planning.wealden.gov.uk/ or send an email to planning@wealden. gov.uk remembering to quote the application reference of WD/2020/2063/MAJ

Horam says goodbye to it’s oldest man

Charlie Marchant, Horam's oldest man passed away on January 17th during hospitalisation from a fall at home. Charlie had achieved the impossibly ancient age of 101, though his vigorous nature and upright bearing belied his years. Many of us would have met Charlie and his dog Jacko, a similarly vigorous Parsons Terrier (a long legged Jack Russell) outside their home on the Cuckoo Trail, Charlie busy keeping the garden immaculate whilst Jacko patrolled the perimeter. Charlie was born in December 1919 in Ticehurst, the family soon moved to East Hoathly where he was schooled. The late 1930s saw Charlie working on a farm in Laughton but war soon intervened, Charlie enlisted immediately and soon found himself patrolling the Channel in a Royal Navy gunboat. He then joined 7th battalion Royal Sussex regiment and was sent to Rochdale for training. This is where he met his future wife Mary, to whom he was to be married for 59 years. Incidentally, her family appeared none too happy that she was to marry a Southerner! The 7th Battalion Royal Sussex formed part of the British 36th Division which was sent India and eventually to Burma to fight with General Bill Slim's 14th Army in its fightback aginst the Japanese, and had the distinction of being the only British battalion to be supplied exclusively by air for an extended period. Charlie would have been part of the advance across the Irrawaddy in the campaign to roll up the Japanese and capture Mandalay. Quite a change from Edwardian farming life in the Low Weald; No dropping in to the Six Bells for a Harvey's and pickled egg on the road to mandalay. On returning to Blighty, Charlie married Mary and two children were duly brought forth. After a short interlude in Rochdale, they moved to East Hoathly before settling for good in Horam in 1965. By this time Charlie was clerk of works for the County Council until his retirement. Charlie's interests were wide and varied; He bred Budgerigars, Canaries and Finches and would have been a regular exhibitor at the Horeham bird shows in the '50s, one newspaper article of the time recorded that the 1955 event was spoiled by too many of the Budgerigar class being in moult, we may be sure, knowing Charlie's military efficiency, that the Marchant budgie wasn't one of them. Charlie's other interests included the drawing of agricultural subjects and the making of very finely detailed ship models, both hobbies obviously reflecting fond memories of his past occupations. I only met Charlie a few times but the impression was of vigour and with a vice-like handshake, immaculate turnout and a general nononsense attitude, he symbolised Old England in fact and will be missed by all, right down to the Great, Great Grandchildren. Charlie's life was neatly bracketed by two of the world's worst pandemics; He was born during the Spanish 'flu and died during Covid19, but as he wouldn't suffer fools or germs lightly, he was touched by neither. Rest in peace Charlie. Dec 1919-Jan 2021.

March Gardening Diary " As many mists as ye have in March, so many frosts in May " March is one of the busier months of the year in the garden and it is a good thing to be kept busy during the long gloom of Lent. This year we have the added incentive of B-Day on the 29th, if, as we have been promised, all shops will be empty of all produce and all merchandise on the morning of the 30th, we may plan with more energy and diligence than usual to make the vegetable patch pay and to thwart the speculators and importers who are certain to use the day as an excuse to hike prices. The planting of deciduous trees, shrubs, fruits and roses should be finished as soon as possible to give them a chance to get a grip of the soil before drought may punish them. In a warm sheltered border we may be planting evergreens such as Laurels, conifers, hollies, azaleas and rhododendrons. Most herbaceous perennials can also be planted now. Rose pruning should be carried on this month, subject to the weather. Though many gardeners prune earlier, during winter, later pruning allows us to cut back to the best buds and to avoid hard frosts on new shoots. We should try to resist until the vernal equinox, (The 20th) and a week or so later if a Blackthorn Winter has really set in. Hybrid tea roses may be pruned back to five or so buds with all sickly and dead wood cut away. Climbing roses should have their side branches cut back to two buds. It is worth feeding the roses with a dedicated rose fertiliser now as the leaves are making their first appearance and spraying with a fungicide from now until June should keep the leaves looking clean all season. Unlike most bulbous rooted plants, snowdrops will benefit from being lifted and divided every few years as the clumps can become very crowded, leading to a mass of blind shoots. In the vegetable garden we should be aiming first at the creation of the all important fine tilth. As always, the weather is master. The soil should be visibly drying; better to wait until the end of the month or beyond before sowing a seed if there is any hint of stickiness. The reader will have dug over the plot thoroughly last autumn, digging in barrowfuls of horse droppings, compost, shoddy and celebrity magazines. The floods and gales of winter will have weathered the diggings down to an uneven crumbly surface. Patient raking eventually renders our seed bed smooth and fine, air pockets being trodden out as we go. We might allow ourselves five minutes leaning on the rake indulging in a short pipe and a gloat over our seed bed, well prepared and superior to next door's. Only now may we sow. The first sowings may be of peas, leeks, parsnips (always use new seed), broad beans, parsley, spinach and radishes, onion and shallot sets may be planted nearer the end of the month, a trowel is better than a dibber for these as any compaction encourages them to wriggle free of the ground.

March Gardening Diary Garlic may still be planted but no time must be lost. New beds of Thyme, Tarragon, Mint and other herbs may be planted out towards middle of Lent. Early potatoes to go in from the Ides of March, planted about six inches down, these early plantings will run some risk from frost but it is good to see the neat rows of tight foliage as soon as possible and any frost-blackened shoots will soon be replaced. We are advised to carry around a bale of straw at all times during March and early April to spread over tender shoots in the case of a late frost. For those who commune with the moon and garden by her phases and the biodynamic system of lunar planting, root crops to be planted or sown during the waning gibbous, from the 21st to the 28th. The week commencing 29th March, B-Day, is the designated Barren phase on the lunar calendar....... Rows for runner beans may be prepared now, this should involve digging in barrowfuls of compost or horsey stuff a foot and a half down and allowed to settle down over the next six to eight weeks before sowing. Jerusalem artichokes may be planted near the end of the month, notorious breakwinds though they are, they are also very useful windbreaks on exposed sites and there is no better plant for hiding an unsightly fence or shed. Tired roots of rhubarb may be divided and replanted now and should regain their zest in a couple of years. We may hope that the long list of routine maintenance about the garden has been completed by Ash Wednesday as the new season will leave no time for pulling up arrears.
