Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary September 2021

Female led modern funeral directors five star reviews.

Dear Readers, How was your August? The summer weather continued to baffle us all and challenge the majority of us stay-cationing in the UK. It has caused arguments in local houses about putting the heating on in August! And it has caused my tomatoes to succumb to blight. However, we were spared for the brilliant Horam Village Celebration day. The marquees battled the wind, but not a drop of rain fell. It was lovely to see familiar faces again and everyone enjoyed a great afternoon - see P8 for more details and photos. Enjoying the celebration day on the rec with the playground, skate park and table tennis tables reminded us all what a great community asset it is for our village. Did you know about the planned 'health path'. for the rec? We have mentioned the planning application in previous issues to create a path that will allow the rec to be used 365 days of the year. Which would be welcomed by dog walkers, parents with prams & pushchairs and there is another track that can be used for bikes - see P40-41 for more details and how you can support the application. Have you tried the Plant Power Grub food van yet? In Horam every Thursday for the most delicious vegan fast food - see P42 for details. Good luck to everyone returning to school, university and work this month!

A Great Afternoon! We do hope you made it along to the Horam Village Celebration Day last month? What a lovely treat it was seeing the community coming together to put on an afternoon of entertainment, food and drink. Was a real pleasure to see lots of familiar faces after the lack of social contact we have all endured over the last year. A huge amount of hard work and good will went into making this a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. So, some well deserved thank yous are in order. Firstly, a huge thank you to Art & Tricia Marsh and Dave Sutton for creating the event and organising it. They would like to thank the following people, who helped make the day possible: Horam Manor Country Park for donating and cooking the burgers and setting up and breaking down and so much more. The Horam WI ladies for baking, donating and serving the cakes, and also making the sandwiches and filling the lunch boxes and serving these as well. The ladies from Christ Church for baking and donating some of the cakes and serving the teas and ice cream in the village hall kitchen.Sarah Marsh for providing the PA and being MC for the day. The Scouts for helping set up and break down. Those of the Fun Day committee that helped with everything. Michael Cousins of Horam Parish Council for all his help and in keeping the grounds clean. John Hudson, Jo Brookbank and Sarah and George Holloway for their help on the bar and clearing up. Lou & Lottie O’Kill for their entertainment. The Co-op, Horam Traders Association and Ana’s Flowers for the prizes on the prize draw. The Village Hall for allowing us to use the Hall and Recreation ground. The sponsors - Horam Parish Council, The Co-op, and Horam Traders Association for their generous donations. Roy Cullen for taking some great photographs of the day. Also everyone else that helped or stayed behind to pack up. Tricia & Art and Dave apologise if they have forgotten anyone that helped. They also want to thank. everyone that came to make it such an amazing event.and are very pleased that all the hard work of the last few months paid off!

"A funeral isn't a day in a lifetime, it's a lifetime in a day."

Helping families create truly personal goodbyes. “Lucy and Dawn at White Feather Funerals were fantastic. They opened my eyes to how different funerals can be. We chose to celebrate our Mums life in her beloved garden. With lots of additional touches to make a very sad day a very memorable one. It felt much more like a celebration than a traditional funeral. We chose a purple cardboard coffin and unusual transport to give our mum a good send off. Dawn and Lucy made a very difficult time much easier. I would highly recommend them. “ Mrs E

“The service provided by Lucy and Dawn was wonderful at a very distressing time. We felt both dad and us were taken care of by them, they carried out our wishes exactly making our final goodbye very peaceful, not having to worry about any details just saying goodbye. A very different experience to my mums funeral with a larger funeral company which was very impersonal and felt like it was all about the money not our family saying goodbye.” Mrs R “Very passionate and nothing was too much to help me arrange. Dawn and Lucy are wonderful and showed so much empathy throughout. Mark the celebrant was amazing and listened to everything I advised to incorporate into the service. Thank you so much you guys the support you gave me was excellent through this very difficult time.” Miss N

Empathetic, considerate, brilliant from start to finish. I could not rate them more highly. Ms D 27a High Street, Heathfield, TN21 8JR. 01435 408650 www.whitefeatherfunerals.com

The play park and skate park continue to be very busy and users are reminded that they should comply with the latest government advice and regulations about social distancing, wearing of face coverings and use of hand sanitiser. Please be considerate to ALL users, take all litter home; or if that is not possible, use the litter bins provided.

DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT WORKS TO HORAM PLAY PARK

Drainage improvement works are due to start on Monday 13th September. Therefore, the Play Park will be closed for a period of approximately three weeks until early October. However, the exact dates and duration of the closure will be very weather dependent and so details will be posted in the window of The Horam Centre and on the Horam.com website nearer the time. Nusrat Ghani Update

Nusrat Ghani, MP for Wealden, has presented the team at Manor Pharmacy in Horam with the Wealden Hero Award.

The fantastic team at Manor Pharmacy provides vital services to Horam communities. Since the beginning of the pandemic, they have worked tirelessly to deliver medicines to the homes of vulnerable residents and help them stay safe and well. As the pressure on GP practices grew throughout the Covid crisis, more people have been turning to pharmacies when they needed healthcare advice and the team at Manor Pharmacy have gone above and beyond to remain open throughout the winter lockdowns and under all weather conditions.

Nusrat was accompanied by District Councillors for Horam & Punnetts Town Susan Stedman and Bob Bowdler to present the team with the Award. Nusrat Ghani said: “Pharmacies are part of the fabric of our local high streets and they are essential health and wellbeing assets for the many rural village communities across Wealden. Following many nominations from the community, this Award reflects how valued the team at Horam’s Manor Pharmacy is by local residents. Last year, Horam’s Davies & Sons Butchers were awarded the Wealden Hero Award for providing the community with essential foodstuffs throughout the pandemic and I’m pleased to have returned to Horam again this year to present the award to another fantastic business on Horam high street.”

September Gardening Diary 'September blow soft 'till the fruit's in the loft ' The two great jobs of the month are the harvesting of fruit and the digging-in of dung. Apples and pears remaining on the branch may be picked just as soon as they will readily part from the tree, those allowed to fall will inevitably be bruised and bruises are fatal to the prospects of stored fruits, though not to the making of cider. Raspberries and blackberries may be pruned, cutting out all stems which have borne fruit this year. Main crop potatoes should be lifted as soon as the haulm dies down; there is nothing to be gained by leaving them in the ground and in the event of a wet spell there is every prospect of them making secondary growth. The digging-over and manuring of the ground starts this month whilst there is warmth left in the soil for the dung to fester down before winter inertia sets in. We should begin by Battle of Britain Day and be finished by Trafalgar Day at the latest. The full benefits of dung may only be gained when applied with deep digging, the best results gained by trenching or 'bastard digging', which may seem a penance but only after a hard spell of bastard digging may we take to the shed to fully savour a long pipe and gloat over our superior work ethic. Some words on dung and his cousins. Plants build themselves from the gases of the air and the minerals in the soil, thus one of the foremost jobs of the gardener is to maintain a productive soil. Traditionally animal manures have been the staple fare, the best is that which has been dry stored, the value of dung is greatly reduced when left for years in the elements. Where possible we should avoid using dung which contains wood chippings or saw dust as these can be detrimental to the soil. Pig and sheep droppings are higher in nitrogen than horse and cow. For heavy soils, being what most of us East-South Saxons are blessed with, we should use strawy manures. For those that can't get their hands on dung, the compost heap is a good substitute. The heap should be built up with alternating layers of green soft stuffs and slightly woody fibrous cuttings. If one has garden lime to hand, a sprinkling every six inches is helpful. Chicken guano will act as a great accelerator. Faster and better results are gained from a covered heap; a sheet of old corrugated iron or even sacks to keep out excessive rain and to keep in some heat. The compost is ready to use when it smells earthy. For very heavy soils we may contemplate the digging-in of shoddy; a good time to discreetly dig in those Christmas jumpers. Wool shoddy better than cotton shoddy. For those of us that enjoy nothing more than dragging home pleasing items of flotsam from the beach, we may fill our boots with seaweed, which makes an excellent addition to the soil. Green manures are a good substitute for dung, there are many varieties out there and the good gardener should always have a packet of seeds by them; whenever a patch becomes vacant it may be sown and the resulting growth dug in. Those keen on onions will be sowing now, the reader having remembered to first prepare the ground with those dry-stored ashes saved from the wood burner. Lettuce and parsley for winter use may be sown on recently vacated ground, dug over but not manured. Evergreen shrubs, including hollies and conifers may be planted now. Rhododendrons may be transplanted but care must be taken to keep the roots from drying out. Early bulbs may be planted, including crocuses, snowdrops, fritillaria and narcissi and also biennials such as wallflowers, foxgloves, canterbury bells and verbascum. Sweet peas may be treated as ordinary autumn-sown hardy annuals, the seeds sown outdoors now where they are to grow next year, choosing a sheltered and well drained spot. We may also be increasing our stock in the borders by division of existing plants. Many fleshy-rooted perennials will take root after division now and may safely face the winter. If left for another six weeks they will be ready for slumber and will then lie inert in cold wet soil, possibly rotting off before the spring awakening. Michaelmas daisies now in flower may become heavy when wet, it is as well to stake these, as their tall stems flopped across the lawn are a chastening sight. The growth of vigorous climbers such as clematis and wisteria may be cut back now. Climbing roses will lately have been sending up new shoots, these will bear the best flowers next year and should be tied in now as they are brittle and easily damaged by winter gales. To clothe an arch or middling sized garden structure, an alternative to the climbing rose is to allow a bush rose to keep on growing, less work and easier to manage. More than ever, the hoe will have its work in the borders, September is the great month for weeds, and hidden away under the foliage they will do great mischief if overlooked at this late stage; care should be taken not to let them get the upper hand. The days may be shortening but there is no slackening off in the work to be done. Do not eat bats.

Development Update Horam Recreation Health Path There is a planning application WD/2021/0930/MAJ for the construction of a health path with ancillary works, including the erection of a shelter and a cycle pump track for community benefit..at Horam's recreation ground. As the village grows from development, more and more people will be wanting to make use of the recreation ground and it's facilities in Horam. Currently, during the winter months the recreation ground is not always accessible due to the weather and the continuing issues with drainage. A community survey was distributed to every household in the greater Horam area – over 1400 flyers were delivered. In addition, many users of the recreation ground were approached and asked to complete a questionnaire. Social media was also used to try and gauge if Horam wanted this new facility. The results of the survey showed very clearly that Horam wanted these facilities – over 95% of the responses were strongly in favour. Maximising the use of this valuable community asset is essential for many reasons, some of which we have listed below: • • •

• •

We are all being encouraged to exercise more in the fresh air and we are very fortunate to have the recreation ground – all ten acres of it. Sadly, the whole area gets waterlogged and is very muddy for about a few months of the year – only dog walkers with wellies are able to use the area then. The proposed one km perimeter pathway, with it’s all weather surface, will enable all sections of the community to exercise 365 days a year – dog walkers, joggers, baby buggies, bicycles, walkers, the less mobile, will all be able to use the pathway rain or shine A halfway house is also planned to offer shelter from the weather, when needed. The creation of a Pump Track has also been included in the overall project – this specially designed area is for youngsters who want to improve their balance skills on bikes, scooters, skates or boards.

Both Hailsham and Battle have already created their own exercise pathways around their recreation grounds in the past 18 months – they are both very well used by the locals. If you support the creation of the health path, please email planning@ wealden.co.uk quoting the application reference, your full name & address and the reasons you support this application. Alternatively, you can write to Planning, Wealden District Council, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, BN27 2AX.
