aders, e R r a e D Congratulations! You made it through the long, dark month of January and survived. The start of the year is generally when we take stock of where we are and what we want to do with the coming year, but paradoxically the time when we are in a kind of stasis due to an expensive Christmas, a plod till payday, dark mornings, cold days, Dry January, Brexit - the list goes on. Well, the good news is that we are one month in and Spring is around the corner so now is the time to get things done. Whatever your situation, means or health - a change can make a big difference. It doesn't have to be a costly or big change. It can be something simple like learning a new skill, reducing the amount we drink, catching up with a friend, getting out in the fresh air more often or something more fundamental. Moving house, having an extension, decluttering, changing career, having a baby, getting married. But here is a tip. Whatever your to-do list looks like, make it realistic. Prioritise the important stuff and organise the tasks into different schedules. I don't know about you, but I don't think I am alone in writing a great big long to-do list (including stuff already done so I can cross it off immediately!) that never ever get's completed. Jobs just get added to the following days list and that makes us feel frustrated. How about we focus on a task a week that is easy to achieve on top of our day to day commitments? Let's set realistic expectations on ourselves. And always be kind. We may never know what the person who jumped the queue, was rude or unfriendly is going through. Responding in the same manner will often escalate the negativity rather than dispersing it. Let's stop wishing the time away with our endless lists, impatience and attention on what we don't like and try to live in the moment, notice the good stuff - a funny joke (see below, you are welcome), a kind gesture, a cute baby (or dog!), sparkling frost, a sunny day or an unexpected compliment. // Breaking news: // : Sad news from the NestlĂŠ factory today. A night shift worker was crushed beneath a case of chocolate that fell 20 feet off the storage racking. He called for help repeatedly but every time he shouted "The Milky Bars are on me" his colleagues just cheered. No more information at this time. And if all that fails - remember February is a short month. :-)

PLANNING UPDATE
You may have read in last month's issue about the unusual Egyptian names that Bovis were suggesting for the Rosemead development. Like Horam Parish Council, several residents contacted Bovis about this, offering up their own suggestions based on meadow flower names, local people and local history. Bovis advised that they have chosen generic meadow flower names for the estate - Marigold Gardens, Poppy Drive, Rosa Villas, Cornflower Avenue, Speedwell Avenue. We think maybe the village would have preferred less generic names like Brickyard Road, Ironworks/Bloomery St, Cannonball Close, Poultry Place and/or rail station related as so close to site of old railway line and station eg Horam Halt. Bovis have advised that the flower names have already been approved by Wealden District Council, so won't change. Please see opposite page for latest plan. HPC are continuing discussions with ESCC about the mini roundabout, lighting & bridge.
Bimbo’s Woodyard/Valelands
No update from last month: Nothing to report on the former, just that the latest Valelands application WD/2018/2542/PO4 (behind former woodyard) seeks to use a strip of land from woodyard adjacent to existing lane that runs down the side of the site, with a view to access improvement. Still current on Wealden site for comments this application is to convert existing agricultural buildings into 5 dwellings.
Southside (Horebeech Lane)/Hedgerows (A267 by May Garland)/Coxlow Farm No more news or planning applications for any of the above.
Crematoriam
Work to move live gas main on A267 continues, currently looking at opening in March, with open days in February 2019. No applications for houses as yet.
Wealden Local Plan
This should be going to the Planning Inspector by the end of January/early February 2019.
Developers approaching local landowners
We have been made aware that developers have been approaching land owners on Laundry Lane. This is outside of the latest, published Wealden District Council development boundary for Horam, but may have something to do with access to the local sewage plant at Vines Cross. This is purely a speculation and cannot be corroborated by fact at the time of going to print.
If you are interested in being kept up to date about development in Horam, please subscribe to the Residents Group by emailing damocles25@btinternet. com and register for Wealden Alerts www.wealden.gov.uk 6

Move or Improve ?
Spring is not far off and you may be itching to get on with the things you had planned for your home this year. It could be an extension, a conservatory, new flooring, windows, kitchen, bathroom; a garden over-haul, a lick of paint, or a new wood burner. Perhaps it's all those little jobs you have been putting off. Cleaning that guttering, putting up those shelves, decluttering and sorting out effective storage solutions. Whatever is on your to-do list, the majority of us won't have the time or the skill to do a professional job ourselves. Which is where we come in - the Diary is full of local professionals who have years of experience doing their jobs professionally & efficiently, so you can get on with the day to day stuff. Here are a few tips on improving your home, either to enjoy it more or get it sold. Even if you aren't planning on going anywhere in the foreseeable future, understanding the improvements that will add value to your home will help you to work out which projects are worth doing. Cosmetic changes like a loft conversion, or a new kitchen are often the most obvious and popular choices, but don't overlook the value that will be added through some basic structural repairs. Identify and Remedy Structural Problems: Make sure you fix any major structural problems before tackling any cosmetic improvements or repairs like redesigning the kitchen or bathroom, changing flooring and redecorating. Ensure Central Heating is in Working Order: Adding or updating the central heating system will always add more to the value of a property than it costs and needs to be done in conjunction with improving the general energy efficiency of the building. Improving the efficiency will include: sealing any drafts around doors and windows (but not airbricks), replacing windows that are beyond repair with double glazing, add insulation into the loft space. Update Services: Updating services, such as wiring and plumbing, is a disruptive job and will involve lifting floors and chasing out plaster walls, so it’s essential to complete the work before making any cosmetic improvements. Electricity: Updating the electrics may be essential if the house has not been rewired for some years. You should be able to tell by looking by the meter if there is an old fuse box, you probably need to rewire the house and install a modern consumer unit with a RCD (residual circuit device) for safety. Plumbing: Old pipework can be very furred up, leading to poor hot and cold flow, knocking or rattling sounds and other noises at worst, it can lead to burst pipes. Consider a pressurised plumbing system, rather than gravity fed, as it eliminates the need for a header tank, thus freeing up space, and ensures good pressure on both the hot and cold supplies. Replace Windows: Double-glazing is considered an essential by most buyers and can add considerable value to a property. Where windows need replacing, they should be replaced like-for-like although it will be necessary for them to be double glazed to meet the current building regulations, unless the building is listed or in a Conservation Area. For most listed buildings, plastic windows are not acceptable to English Heritage. When it comes to higher value period properties, aesthetics start to become a more significant factor, to the extent that a premium can be placed on a property that still has its original period windows, providing they are intact and functioning well. In such properties, it is often only worth replacing windows that are either beyond repair or inappropriate in terms of style, or where they could add more light.

If you are looking for a big change and want to upsize, downsize or have a new view, you are best off seeking the advice of a local estate agent. They know the local market well and will be able to offer valuations, advice and possible new homes to view. So, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started on that list!

Can you help clean up Horam? Sadly our lovely countryside is often marred by litter. It not only looks awful, but it affects our wildlife, blocks our drains and can cause injury to dogs. You will have seen in a recent edition of the Diary that a fine of up to £75 can now be given to someone seen throwing litter out of their car. Local councils around the UK (including Wealden) have been using a campaign that originated in Australia (see pics below), which some people have found offensive. Personally, I find the people who think it’s ok to drop litter offensive. The litter on the rural road I live on is regularly used by motorists who happily throw their empty coffee cups, lager cans or takeaway bags onto the verges. I just don’t understand why they can’t take it home? Our district council are unable to afford to have regular litter picking done, so have given the responsibility to the parish council, who with their limited funds pay for litter collection a few hours every week. However, this only covers the centre of Horam, the recreation ground, around the Village Hall and up to the petrol station on Little London road. Particular areas of concern are Horebeech Lane, Laundry Lane and the road from Horam to Maynards Green. Residents in Heathfield have been proactive and set up Brighter Heathfield, where volunteers are supplied equipment by Wealden District Council to keep the streets clean. Would anyone in Horam be interested in joining Brighter Heathfield and co-ordinating litter picking in the areas not being covered by the parish council’s man?
If you are interested in getting involved please email us at hvcvillagediary@gmail.com and we can connect you with Brighter Heathfield to progress this. Lucy Atabey, Editor.
Horam Co-op recently presented Dave Sutton with a cheque for £200 from their Community Fund, so the 1st Horam Scout Troop can buy heaters for their HQ in Horam.

I would like …….. shares in the 1st Horam Scout Group 100 Club, November 2018 to October 2019, at £1.00 per share, per month (i.e. entry for next 10 months is £10 per share). I attach a cheque for £……….. payable to the 1st Horam Scout Group. Name ……………………………………. Telephone Number …………….……………… Email ………………………………………..Address ……………..…………………..…………..… ………………………………………………………………………….………………………… Send to: Dave Sutton, Pollards, Vines Cross Road, Horam, TN21 9EE. Please support your local Horam/Maynards Green Speedwatching Group! We work under the auspices of Sussex Police, Operation Crackdown. The main aim of speed watching is road safety education, making our roads less dangerous and persuading drivers to respect the speed limit. Our group of concerned local residents has been carefully trained by Sussex police and started monitoring traffic in December last year. The many sympathetic hoots and friendly signs by passing motorists and the expressions of gratitude by pedestrians is very encouraging. This and the marked reduction in speed by most drivers as they spot us and our radar speed meter goes some way to compensate for the chilly winds and icy feet. New volunteers most welcome! Full training and support given by Sussex Police, please ring 07979336401 to express your interest in joining us.

COMMUNITY Young at Heart was started in May 2018. The inspiration came from the documentary “Old People’s Home for 4 year Olds” which was shown for the first time in 2017 set at a care home in Bristol. The relationship between children and the elderly is a wonderful combination which both age groups benefit from. The elderly have so much knowledge and wisdom to share and the children are like sponges and want to learn. We are in the very fortunate position of hosting Young at Heart from Heathfield Park Cricket Club, Old Heathfield, which offers one of the best views from any English Cricket Club. At Young at Heart we are visited by All Saints and St Richard’s Primary School, Broad Oak Primary School, Parkside Primary School, Maynards Green Primary School, Dallington Primary School and Little Tinkers Nursery School on a week by week basis. The children arrive with their reading books and are paired up with Young at Heart members to be heard to read. We then lay on activities to suit both generations. The mornings are spent making a craft which members take home. There is always a home cooked lunch and home baked cakes for tea - everyone enjoys the food! We also offer free transport for the local area. It is a fun and varied day and a distraction for those needing “something more”. Please contact: Rachel. Tel: 07971 032667, rachel@youngatheart.me.uk, youngatheart.me.uk, Young at Heart Heathfield (Facebook), for further details. We look forward to meeting you!
Are you retired, widowed, lonely or just bored? Would you enjoy spending an active day outside your home? With free local transport there and back? If the answer is YES then we would love to meet you! Please call 07971 032667 or visit youngatheart.me.uk

HORAM PARISH COUNCIL – February 2019 PLAY AREA, HORAM RECREATION GROUND Work resumed on the play area w/c 7th January 2019. Unfortunately, due to the recent unprecedented heavy rain during the works, problems were experienced with flooding on the area of the playground and unexpected remedial works had to be undertaken to prevent problems arising in the future. Once the play area has been completed, works on the new skate park will commence. Once the entire project has been completed the Village Hall Management Committee will then take back responsibility for the whole area from the Parish Council, who have been managing the project from start to completion, but will retain ownership of the equipment. Any enquiries to be made to The Clerk at Horam Parish Council, e-mail: clerk@horam.com or telephone 07900 576236. Once completed the nomination paper must be returned to WDC offices at Hailsham. Each candidate requires a proposer and seconder from the Ward and the candidate needs to qualify under one or more of the set criteria. Members of the public are welcome to attend full Council meetings. If you are interested in joining the Parish Council and standing as a candidate then come along to the next monthly meeting which will be held at 7.30 p.m. in the Horam Centre on Wednesday, 13th February 2019 to view how the Parish Council works. Do YOU have a bucket list? I don’t know if you’ve seen the film The Bucket List? It’s a comedy-drama with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The basic plot is that two terminally ill men are on a road trip with a wish list of things to do before they “kick the bucket”. They go skydiving, fly over the North Pole, visit the Taj Mahal and drive motorbikes on the Great Wall of China, amongst other things. I don’t know if you have a list of things you want to do before you die, but the idea has become increasingly popular. It’s not meant to be a morbid list, but rather a collection of fun, exciting and inspirational things to do and strive for. It might be learning an instrument, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, parachute jumping, learning another language, helping rebuild homes where a disaster has struck, swimming with dolphins, standing in the Sistine Chapel...the list is endless. There are so many great and wonderful things to do. Not everyone has a bucket list, but if we did, they would all be different. As a Christian, I believe there is one thing though, that should be on everyone’s bucket list of things to do and that’s to seriously look into the claims and identity of the person of Jesus Christ before we die. We’ve just celebrated Christmas where we have remembered his coming in history. If Jesus really was God on earth, then we’d be very wise to listen to what he said and did and into the reason why he came and walked amongst us before we ‘kick the bucket’ and meet him face to face. Jesus said, ‘I have come that you may have life, and have it to the full’ (John 10:10). It’s an outrageous thing to say, but I for one believe it to be true, and if I could live my life again, knowing Jesus would still be at the top of my list. Everything else in this life we will leave behind when we die, but a relationship with Jesus is the only thing that we’ll be able to take with us. At Christ Church we regularly run courses to help people explore who Jesus is. If that’s something you’d be interested in, please get in touch. Life’s too short to put it off. PJ Guy, Vicar, Christ Church, Horam.
Identity is a seven-week course that uses John’s Gospel to clear up the confusion about who we are and who God is. Each session gradually reveals more about the identity and mission of Jesus and shows why he is the key to life and the one who can answer our big questions.

February Gardening Diary ‘All the months of the year curse a fair februeer” Just as for January, no good will come from a warm February, cold and dormancy is still what’s called for in the garden. If the wind is in the east at the beginning of the month, winter is likely to remain for some weeks to come, indeed snow and ice may be expected, but if the wind is mild and westerly we may expect the worst of winter to be behind us. During clement spells of weather we should be pressing on with the steadily lengthening list of jobs to be carried out in the garden. Winter flowering shrubs may be pruned as they finish their flowering. With Winter Jasmine train as many recently flowered shoots along the wall as necessary and cut back the rest to four buds from the base, these should then make good growth for next winter. Buddleia Davidii is a subject that greatly enjoys hard treatment, sometime between St. Patrick’s Day and Good Friday prune back to four or so buds. Hydrangea paniculata may be treated in the same way, likewise the red and yellow stemmed dogwoods, the stems of these may be used as cuttings; place them in fine soil in a sheltered out-of-theway spot and they should make root by autumn. All too often we see weak and sickly plants in the border, but this can be avoided with a just a few hours’ light work; those plants which have not been recently moved may be fed with a general fertiliser, preferably with manure or compost lightly dug in at the same time. It will pay to start spraying the roses at the end of the month as the stems will most likely be hosting overwintering fungal spores, the main thing is to prevent the appearance of mould on the leaf, by which time it is too late to eradicate, regular applications as directed and early into the season should see off the fungus for the rest of the year. Box edgings may be planted and if wallflowers, forget-me-nots and polyanthuses are still to be put out, this should be done without delay, we may also be planting hollyhocks, verbenas, foxgloves, sweet Williams and Canterbury bells. Our thoughts may at last be turning to which crops we may be sowing now to encourage and cheer us through the long gloom of Lent. Any ground preparation or early seed sowing must be governed by the weather. Excess rain or cold should see us off to the shed for yet more tool sharpening and brooding over seed catalogues. Outdoor sowing is still fraught with danger of failure, but a month’s head start may be gained with the use of cloches, sadly not seen as often nowadays as they might be. The keen vegetable gardener will have been greatly cheered by that most glorious of early winter sights, namely the the upthrustings of a line of sturdy green cotyledons which heralded a successful germination of their broad beans. If the weather is fine and ‘open’ and the reader has a south facing or otherwise sheltered veg. patch it may pay to sow some seeds under cloches, assuming of course a fine tilth has first been achieved. Onion, pea, parsnip, lettuce, broad bean, Brussels sprout and radish may be tried. Radishes must be grown fast to be tender and mild, any check to growth leads to hot and woody specimens, disdained even by the poultry. Protect from frost. Garlic and shallots to go in around Valentine’s day. Mice find peas dipped in diesel or paraffin to be an unappetising snack. That long-neglected Rhubarb clump may now be lifted and divided. One good eye per clump. For sticks to be proud of, divisions should not to be harvested until next year. Fruit trees grown in lawn or meadow will benefit from a helping of Nitrogen. Chives may be divided and replanted at the end of the month. For many of us March is the beginning of the gardening year but much important groundwork carried out now will greatly ease the pressure later on.
