Horam & Vines Cross Village Diary January 2021
Female led funeral directors
Dear Readers, Happy New Year to you all! We do hope you were able to have some kind of half decent Christmas with family & friends, in person or on a screen. It has been a challenging time for all, we hope you managed to snatch some joyful moments. January is notoriously one of the most difficult months of the year. People are generally lacking in funds, relations are strained after spending time together, the days are short, the nights long and dark - BUT remind yourselves that we survived a hugely difficult year and are coming out the other side. There is an inoculation programme being rolled out for Covid 19, which in theory should loosen the tightened restrictions we have been living under. When things are difficult it is very helpful to break stuff down into smaller chunks. Each day, try to record the things that have made you smile, or that you have been grateful for. This can be in the form of a journal or a jar with post it notes. This is especially helpful to look back on, during the darker days. And remember to talk – it’s a cliché but a problem shared really is a problem halved! I (Lucy) blessed to have a faith. My relationship with Jesus gives me hope that there are better days ahead, and whilst I navigate the storms of life, He walks with me. If you would like to find out more about the hope that is offered by Christianity, then I would highly recommend the on-line Christianity Explored course run by P J Guy from Christ Church, Horam. It runs for 6 weeks and is only a couple of hours a week and will be starting later this month – see Christ Church’s ad on P18 for more details. Thanks again to our readers for your continued support of the Diary, to our loyal & committed delivery team, and to all of our advertisers.

Living Alone Heavenly Father, your prescence means more than I can say I know you're here with me throughout each passing day Giving just enough patience, strength, guidance, wisdom, love A gentle rebuke, lots of forgiveness, cleansing from above. I don't know how I'd manage a day 'walking' on my own It's always been so very hard learning to live alone, But as we go along you remind me of your laws, Protect me from danger, help me to pray and hold my hand in yours. When loneliness comes sweeping in, in it's gnawing, aching way You help ease the pain and give me strength to say "I'm a child of my Heavenly Father - he'll work things for the best. " And "Please Lord, will you give my mind and spirit rest?" You do not always take a broom and sweep the grief away, But you do give grace and courage to live for you each day. Lord, you never said that living for you would be an easy task But you did say that when I am in need, I only have to ask. And your Holy Spirit will fill me with good things from above And give me what I need the most - your forgiveness, peace and love. Thank you Jesus. By Gill Joy.

COMMUNITY
! e r e h l til s e r ’ We After what seems like an eternity, we’re pleased to announce that we’re starting to meet again on Sunday mornings at 10.30am. We’ve had to organise things a bit differently - there are limits to what we can do, limits to the number of people who can attend, the need to maintain social distancing in the building, etc. Unfortunately, we’re not in a position to start our mid-week clubs (Toddlers, Treasure Seekers, and BiF) just yet. Sorry – we miss them too! When we can do so safely, we will let you know! Obviously, this is under constant review, so may need to change depending on current guidelines. We are very lucky to have such an amazing charity locally that cares for our wildlife. WRAS are always grateful for donations of towels, pillow slips, blankets and cat food. These items can be left at: Unit 8, The Shaw Barn, Whitesmith, BN24 5QU. Why not visit their charity shop in Eastbourne? 01323 643111. January Gardening Diary " Better to see a mad dog than a hot sun in January." And so for the fourth consecutive January we are told to expect the return of rationing and the spectacle of empty shelves and grumbling huddled masses outside the village grocery. So to avoid becoming a huddled mass we must think of self-sufficiency; becoming skilled growers of vegetables and cunning snarers of conies. But we must beware of being tricked by a few fair days of clement weather into sowing our seed too early; as we work off the Christmas surfeit of lampreys and port we must tighten our belts and await the brighter days of early Spring before venturing to draw out a drill. In the event of the weather being 'open', we may take every chance to push on with garden chores. There is much to be done before the great awakening when urgent tasks multiply and leave no time for pulling up arrears. So how may we work off the corpulence and crapulence of the festive season? Might we start with mending the torn felt on the shed roof, or cleaning and disinfecting the green house or burning that pile of cuttings left over from the autumn pruning? Conditions allowing, we may be planting hedging plants, hardy climbers, deciduous shrubs, roses and the hardier perennials. As always we should be looking over recent plantings to see none have been loosened or lifted by frost. Towards the end of the month in sheltered spots we may be planting, always weather permitting, Jerusalem artichokes, Horse-radish, Rhubarb and Shallots. A heavily cropped vegetable garden will slowly increase in acidity over the years, the change may be almost imperceptible but by degrees the quality and quantity of crops, especially brassicas, will disappoint, we may dig in extra manures and fertilisers to boost the yield but these may only increase the acidity. The PH must be adjusted. Assuming the reader carried out autumn digging and manuring, now is the time to lime. It is important to keep manuring and liming at least three months apart as they are uneasy bedfellows. Liming will also help to improve soil condition and workability by causing the very fine particles to be found in clay to join together into larger clumps; the happily named process of flocculation. In common with one’s children, the showy dahlia is a 'gross feeder ' and will certainly repay preparation carried out now; Planting sites may be dug over and manure added together with bone meal, this mix will fester down nicely in time for planting in late spring. The herbaceous border may have become over-crowded with older plants and may need some attention as to lifting and replanting. To save time later on, those plants to be moved or divided may be dug out now and put in a shady corner with some covering over the root balls. The bed may now be dug over and quantities of horse droppings, compost and bone meal dug in. This preparation will save much time later on and as with the sites for dahlias, the mix will then have time to settle and gain

January Gardening Diary some structure before re-planting. Likewise herbs such as sage and thyme can get scruffy and worn out, these too can be divided up and replanted at the end of the month. As with the lawn-loving Breton in the Asterix books, an Englisher’s pride is his lawn. Having vigorously scattered the worms casts with the besom we may now apply topdressing at around four pounds a square yard, this may be gently and rhythmically spread back and forth with the back of a rake and a very calming job it is too. Cloches. We don't seem to see as many nowadays but they are essential for drying the soil and warming up the ground prior to sowing seed. By setting out cloches now we may gain ourselves a month's head-start with the crop and be in a position come Spring to be gloating over our unseasonably early crops. If cloches were put out at the beginning of the month we may, after the Ides, presume to sow some onion, lettuce, radish, broad bean and round-seeded pea. Wood ashes from the wood burner will be greatly appreciated by the onions, important to store these in a dry place before use. Seed potatoes may be stood eye ends uppermost to start the chitting process. Faded flowers on Azaleas may be pinched off as one passes by. There are little jobs and big jobs to be seen to wherever we look. For those governed by the fourth humor, melancholia, or those by nature prone to ennui, work in the garden is the best possible remedy. There should be no time left for brooding or boredom.

COMMUNITY Young at Heart have had a busy month - we have made Christmas baubles, mini lamp shades for fairy lights, Christmas wreaths, plenty of baking and of course sung with the amazing Angela. Our numbers are growing each week. Sadly we still can't have the children but we are able to have our Christmas lunch on Tuesday 22nd December with carol singing and a surprise visit by Dinky, the miniature Shetland pony! We launched our Young at Heart "Lockdown Cakes and Bakes" Cook book which Waitrose, Heathfield have kindly hosted our sales - I still have some spare copies if anyone would like one? Around 70 recipes with the story of Young at Heart and how we have evolved and adapted through Covid. We have had huge support from so many sources - what a wonderful community we have! On behalf of Young at Heart we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Kindly sponsored by Wealden Funeral Care.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE Are the government finally seeing sense? On Wednesday 16th December 2020 Robert Jenrick decided to abandon an algorithm that would have dramatically increased housebuilding in the Conservative’s southern heartlands – including Wealden. This U turn sees England’s 20 biggest cities taking up the lion’s share of new homes under revised plans drawn up by the housing secretary, after a backlash from Conservative MP’s. In the light of this news, should we be asking Wealden District Council to call a moratorium on accepting any more planning applications for more than a single dwelling or extensions, until they have been given a firm start date from developers for build out of approved applications*? If developers cannot start building within a certain time frame, should Wealden be issuing penalties for developments not started or with no end date commitment for completion? If you want to stem the loss of green pastureland in South Wealden, why not drop a line to Stacey Robins, current Head of Planning at Wealden District Council at Stacey.Robins@wealden.gov.uk *Current number as of April 2020 in Wealden was 6227 houses with permission to build. Enforcement notice for Rosemead Farm, Horebeech Lane You may recall from previous updates that the northern and eastern boundaries of the Bovis site at Rosemead Farm had tree planting conditions as part of the Reserve Matters planning permission, given in 2018. These conditions stated that these boundaries should be planted with trees ‘within the first planting season’. That would have been over 2 years ago. Despite writing to Bovis on numerous occasions, the planting has still not begun. The matter has now been referred to Wealden District Council Enforcement Team who advised in an email on 16th December 2020 that “We have received confirmation that the necessary planting is scheduled for January/February2021, which will fall within the accepted planting season. Whilst it has been acknowledged by the developer that this planting should have already taken place, it is not considered appropriate or proportionate to pursue formal enforcement action all the while they are cooperating. The matter will be reviewed in early February but it is hoped that the matter can then be closed.” The site manager informed the Diary that planting is scheduled to commence on w/c 25/01/2020. These conditions were imposed for a reason. To mitigate the change to the look and feel of Horebeech Lane that occurred by granting permission for a 123 house estate on green fields. The tree planting was also designed to shield the land owner and his livestock to the north (Diamonds Farm) and protect the view from the public footpath (Cauldavon) that runs across the land to the east of the site. Two years growth has been forgone, whilst Bovis happily plant trees on the completed streets of the estate. This lack of consideration for the local community and Wealden’s ineffectual enforcement speaks volumes about who is being listened to.
Correction In our December edition we discussed recent flooding and the water table locally. A local resident with considerable experience in these matters got in touch to bring attention to some inaccuracies in the Editor’s comments. He advised that flood events are NOT related to the water table and that major development may have the effect of lowering the local water table. He went on to explain that the real cause of the flooding would be poor drainage (many local gardeners will identify with the challenges of our local London clay!) and climate change. Wealden District Council declared a Climate Emergency in July 2019, yet continued to approve hundreds of new dwellings across the district – changing natural habitats for ever and loading additional pollution onto the roads. Lucy Atabey, Editor.
