ers, d a e R r a De Happy New Year and welcome to 2019! We hope you had a great Christmas and are rested and refreshed ready to tackle the opportunities that a new year always brings? Thanks for all those who turned out for the Horam Fun Night on December 6th, wet and windy it may have been - but you turned out in your droves, for lucky dips, treasure hunts, raffles, Christmas shopping, carols, mulled wine, candy floss, hot chocolate and sausage rolls. We owe a great big thank you to Trish & Art of All Dressed Up for organising the evening and for all the traders who took part. The fun night always reminds us of what a great community we are part of, so thank you to all for making the evening such fun. This issue is all about new beginnings. What are you planning this year? Is it to get healthy & strong, change a lifetime habit that is holding you back? Change jobs, do some voluntary work, show kindness to others, shop local or learn something new? Whatever your plans are, we hope we can point you in the right direction. See P26-P39 for some suggestions. The diary is all about Horam, so if you have an interesting story, past or present, please do get in touch. We love to learn about Horam in days gone by, so those of you who are born and bred – drop us a line! Thanks again for your support in 2018, we hope to grow the diary to feature more of interest to local people. Best regards,

cy Dawn & Lu xx Joint Editors

Ancient Egyptian pyramid found in Horam! Rosemead The destruction of ancient meadows continues as Bovis press on with their plans for 123 dwellings. Horam Parish Council have been consulted on street names for the ROSEMEAD development. They were left puzzled as to why the names proposed by Bovis were Egyptian. Their suggestions were: Reda, Rojano, Diab, Albertina and Ninfa, which Bovis informed HPC are names inspired by Egyptian artists, dancers, mythology and history. So HPC have made their own suggestions, as follows: • Wild Meadow Flowers? • A reference to the Hayward Sisters who owned the farm for many years? or • A ballot for the soldiers who died 14/18 war If you would like to share your ideas with Bovis, please email Peter.Lawrence@bovishomes.co.uk or David. Dodds@bovishomes.co.uk HPC are having further talks with ESCC about the mini roundabout, street lighting & bridge.

Bimbo’s Woodyard/Valelands Nothing to report on the former, just that the latest Valelands application WD/2018/2542/ PO4 (behind former woodyard) seeks to use a strip of land from woodyard adjacent to existing lane that runs down the side of the site, with a view to access improvement. This application is to convert existing agricultural buildings into 5 dwellings. Southside (Horebeech Lane)/Hedgerows (A267 by May Garland)/Coxlow Farm No more news or planning applications for any of the above. Crematoriam Work to move live gas main on A267 has begun, currently looking at opening end of February, with open days in Jan & Feb 2019. No applications for houses as yet. Wealden Local Plan This should be going to the Planning Inspector by the end of January 2019.

If you are interested in being kept up to date about development in Horam, please subscribe to the Residents Group by emailing damocles25@btinternet. com and register for Wealden Alerts www.wealden.gov.uk 6

Charity No 1064375. Group Scout leader Paul Sutton 01435 813023. On the evening of 11th November at the commemoration of World War One centenary, the collection raised enough for Horam to donate £110 to each of the following: Benevolent Funds – for the Royal Navy, the Army, the Merchant Navy & the Royal Air Force. It was great to take part in the Horam Christmas fun night, despite the weather. The event was well attended and very enjoyable. All our thanks go to the organisers, well done! The Beavers & Cubs troops have had busy, fun and enjoyable meetings, since term began in September, finishing off with their party evenings before Christmas. Their meetings will restart in the 2nd week of January. Saturday 26th January 2019 is a Quiz Night in the HQ at 7:15pm – to book call Dave on 01435 812462 or 07889 652586

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS that won’t leave you feeling flat...unless we’re talking stomachs Let’s get this out the way quickly, making New Years Resolutions is goal setting-no more no less. Goals can be set and updated at anytime, whilst there is no obligation to wait for a new year to start to consider improving ourselves, I’m all for any excuse. Falling short of new years resolutions can leave you demotivated and have you fall straight back into old habits. Here are five pointers to help set your 2019 New Years resolutions, this list isn’t exhaustive but some ideas to consider: 1. Set habit based goals instead of outcome goals For example an outcome goal might be; ‘Reduce waist measurement by 5 cm for summer holiday’ Habits to set for this outcome goal might include; ‘Walk to work once a week’ or, ‘consume a minimum of 1.5 litres of water daily’. 2. Be realistic Make no mistake, your longterm outcome goals such as five year plans, should be big, ambitious and uncompromising. Above all, progress is made through consistency. If your goals are far removed from your current lifestyle the chances of sticking to them are slim. Small, incremental, habit based goals can be developed and built on when consistently accomplished. This serves to empower and further motivate the individual. In contrast, failing at a lofty goal reinforces the ‘you can’t do this’ narrative. 3. Write them down If they stay in your head they are just intangible, fluffy thoughts. Turn them into a document and make them real. Writing them down involves further organising your thoughts, highlights potential pitfalls and makes them more specific. 4. Tell your friends/significant other This adds accountability, no one wants their friends to know they can’t ‘tough it out’. In addition (if your friends are worth their salt!) they will be a support network to praise you when its going well and offer re-focus you during tougher periods. 5. If you are serious about improving your health markers, body composition or strength get to GO:VER GYM We are offering three months for the price of two for sign ups before January 15th 2019. In addition, we are so confident in our programmes, that we will give a full refund if you don’t get results! If you are getting results doing what you’re doing, where you are doing it - thats awesome, keep it up! If you haven’t made progress, have plateaued or are making progress oh so slowly - this is madness, change it up, pop down and lets get the ball rolling! We are the most friendly gym in Sussex with a fantastic community. Regardless of your goal we have the facilities, coaching staff and ethos to get you there. Here’s to 2019 being a belter! David Gover, Managing Director and head coach GO:VER GYM

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

New Year’s Resolution Idea: Make Your Own Beer for under 35p a pint! The main reason customers start making beer at home is cost. There is duty payable on beer you buy, but there is no duty on beer kits. That's why it works out so much cheaper than shop-bought beer. Once you've invested in the equipment, you can be enjoying beer for under 35p a pint! Start up costs are low, with an equipment-only kit costing less than £25. For example, the complete start-up kit on the left costs under £60 and includes absolutely everything you need to make 40 pints of Coopers European Lager. Your first batch will still cost less than £1.50 a pint. After that, the equipment and bottles are re-usable and you only need to buy the ingredients in a kit. Kits can cost as little as £13, depending on the brand. Even the top quality branded kits made by recognised breweries like St Peter’s work out at less than 75p per pint. Customers tell us the beers taste exactly the same as the ones you buy, if not better. This year we gave my Dad a complete Starter Kit for Father's Day and we helped him make his first batch. Dad is 81. Once we'd shown him once, he continued to make his own beer. No more carrying bags of cans and bottles home from the supermarket. Plus suddenly he has a new, very satisfying hobby! What’s involved in making a beer kit at home? Your beer kit will come with its own specific instructions. They basically all follow the same steps, which are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Clean and sterilise your equipment Add the contents of the kit to your bucket and add sugar and water Pop the lid on the bucket, pop in an airlock, leave to ferment for 1-2 weeks Bottle the beer, adding carbonation drops before sealing Leave for another 2-3 weeks to carbonate, condition and clear Drink and enjoy.

Almost Off Grid sells ingredients, equipment and kits to make your own beer, wine and cider at home. Order online at www.almostoffgrid.co.uk, or call us Monday-Friday on 01435 810199. Click and collect welcome, or we deliver in the TN21 area. Almost off Grid, High Street, Horam, TN21 0EZ www.AlmostOffGrid.co.uk

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

Do you suck your stomach in?

Do you know that sucking your stomach in can have a negative impact on your abdominals? I did suck my stomach in, I believed it made me appear thinner to conform with the culture and society pressure of wanting to appear skinny. What I was actually doing was holding the contents of my abdomen pressed into my diaphragm. If you suck your tummy in this is what you are doing too. This can actually lead to habitually dysfunctional breathing. There should be movement from your armpits to your pelvis when you breath. There are lots of reasons to breath properly. • • • • • • •

Feeding the blood with oxygen, which increase the blood flow. Helps to keep all our systems healthy, respiratory, circulatory, nervous, digestive, urinary, lymphatic. Maintaining calm. Helps with blood pressure and heart rate. Gets rid of waste. Burns sugars, fats and proteins. Helps mental clarity.

To name but a few, my advice is to stop holding the breath in and breathe properly into the belly. Within my Pilates class I teach how to breath properly when exercising and relaxing. There is a time and a place to engage the whole core. When exercising or lifting. Poor posture also has a huge effect on the ability to breath fully. Try this - slouch forward while sitting on a chair, try to take a large breath in while sitting like this. Now sit up straight and relaxed. Now take a large breath in. Instantly you can feel the difference. There is much more to breathing that you think . I believe many body problems are caused by not breathing correctly. So take a large breath in through the nose, let your belly expand and breath out through the nose. And stop sucking the belly in. Let it go! Nancy Procter.

COMMUNITY Can you help clean up Horam? Sadly our lovely countryside is often marred by litter. It not only looks awful, but it affects our wildlife, blocks our drains and can cause injury to dogs. You will have seen in a recent edition of the Diary that a fine of up to £75 can now be given to someone seen throwing litter out of their car. Local councils around the UK (including Wealden) have been using a campaign that originated in Australia (see pics), which some people have found offensive. Personally, I find the people who think it’s ok to drop litter offensive. The litter on the rural road I live on is regularly used by motorists who happily throw their empty coffee cups, lager cans or takeaway bags onto the verges. I just don’t understand why they can’t take it home? Our district council are unable to afford to have regular litter picking done, so have given the responsibility to the parish council, who with their limited funds pay for litter collection a few hours every week. However, this only covers the centre of Horam, the recreation ground, around the Village Hall and up to the petrol station on Little London road. Particular areas of concern are Horebeech Lane, Laundry Lane and the road from Horam to Maynards Green. Residents in Heathfield have been proactive and set up Brighter Heathfield, where volunteers are supplied equipment by Wealden District Council to keep the streets clean. Would anyone in Horam be interested in joining Brighter Heathfield and co-ordinating litter picking in the areas not being covered by the parish council’s man? If you are interested in getting involved please email us at hvcvillagediary@gmail.com and we can connect you with Brighter Heathfield to progress this. Lucy Atabey, Editor. It was great to see the community and local traders come together on this wet and windy evening! Locals turned out in force for the pop-up Christmas Markets in the old News & Food shop and outside Two Sisters Deli (the latter bearing the brunt of the wind and rain); for lots of great gifts to buy; delicious hot chocolate and mulled wine; treasure hunt for the kids and plenty of mince pies and chocolates to keep out the chill. Special thanks to Father Christmas (who knew Santa had such good taste in footwear) for taking time out of his busy schedule and to his very helpful Elf. Big thanks to those who contributed to the soundtrack for the evening - Wealden Brass Band, the lovely children from Maynards Green Choir, Christ Church choir and their ‘Ed Sheeranesque’ take on some much loved Christmas carols. Very kind of those that stayed to listen towards the end of the evening, you kept them going! Can’t forget to thank Art & Tricia from All Dressed Up for organising the whole thing, Dave Sutton for providing the sound system and all the Horam traders who stayed open late, offering refreshments and fun. Good to see the Co-op getting involved and our newest Horam Trader Davies & Son. #shoplocal

TN21 Environmental Aware We are very pleased to say that there was considerable interest in our clean air monitor project with one confirmed order. We have attended a recent meeting of the Friends of the Earth in Eastbourne to gain installation details and are keen to push forward as soon as possible. After the Festive season we hope that residents will have a chance to take a look at the ‘Clean Air Eastbourne’ site which will give much more information. We are also very grateful to the Enhancing Horam Committee for their backing and look forward to working with anyone who has an interest to do so. For updates and information, please ring 01435 812253.

Annually in early Spring on warm, wet nights, toads cross local roads to spawn in ponds. Many are killed crossing the road (being so small they look just like a leaf) and sadly toad populations nationally are in sharp decline. If you live on or near Foords Lane in Vines Cross and might be able to spare a few hours to help toads across the road (from January to March but dependant on weather conditions) please contact John on either mobile 07940 587404 or via email john.linda1@btinternet.com Many thanks to ESCC Highways for providing toad crossing signage near Wimbles Farm – please be aware the toads also cross at night by Foords Farm too.

Award Winning Local Nursing Home Oaklands Court has won national recognition at a prestigious care industry awards ceremony, scooping Care home of the year award. The Horam home beat off strong opposition to be awarded the Regional South award at the second annual Caring UK Awards. The awards, organised by Script Events and leading industry publication Caring UK, recognise excellence, innovation and achievement in all corners of the industry. To come out on top, the home went through a rigorous assessment process, which involved a site visit by a member of the awards’ team who toured the facility, chatted to residents and staff and examined all areas of the business from CQC reports to dignity within care. Detailed reports were then compiled and passed on to an expert judging panel, which included members of the National Care Association, Alzheimer’s Society, Care Forum Wales, Ageing and Dementia Research Centre at Bournemouth University and the Caring UK editor, who decided the winners in each category from the shortlists. Caring UK Awards event director Judith Halkerston said: “All our winners have had an arduous journey to this point – the standard of entries was overwhelming and every facility that walked away with an award should be extremely proud.” Karen Pratt general manager of Oaklands court said ‘It is without doubt the staff who create and maintain the standards of the home, Oaklands Court has an extraordinarily low staff turnover which speaks volumes of the happiness of the home, our staff and most importantly our residents. Team members and residents alike are immensely proud of being crowned Care home of the Year’

January Gardening Diary " Better to see a mad dog than a hot sun in January." Many an ancient and sage countryman has (grumblingly) confided to us that we will pay for the mild autumn by Valentine's Day, in which case we should take every chance now to push on with garden chores. There is much to be done before the great awakening when urgent tasks multiply and leave no time for pulling up arrears. As we surface, blinking and squinting into the new year we may find ourselves regretting that gross surfeit of lampreys we indulged in over Saturnalia and be casting about us for means of working off the corpulence and crapulence of the festive season. Might we start with mending the torn felt on the shed roof, or cleaning and disinfecting the green house or burning that pile of cuttings left over from the autumn pruning? Conditions allowing, we may be planting hedging plants, hardy climbers, deciduous shrubs, roses and the hardier perennials. As always we should be looking over recent plantings to see none have been loosened or lifted by frost. Towards the end of the month in sheltered spots we may be planting, always weather permitting, Jerusalem artichokes, horse-radish, rhubarb and shallots. A heavily cropped vegetable garden will slowly increase in acidity over the years, the change may be almost imperceptible but by degrees the quality and quantity of crops, especially brassicas, will disappoint; we may dig in extra manures and fertilisers to boost the yield but these may only increase the acidity. The PH must be adjusted. Assuming the reader carried out autumn digging and manuring, now is the time to lime. It is important to keep manuring and liming at least three months apart as they are uneasy bedfellows. Liming will also help to improve soil condition and workability by causing the very fine particles to be found in clay to join together into larger clumps, the happily named process called flocculation. In common with our children, the showy dahlia is a 'gross feeder ' and will certainly repay preparation carried out now; Planting sites may be dug over and manure added as well as bone meal, this mix will fester down nicely in time for planting in late spring. The herbaceous border may have become over-crowded with older plants and may need some attention as to lifting and replanting. To save time later on, those plants to be moved or divided may be dug out now and put in a shady corner with some covering over the root balls. The bed may now be dug over and quantities of horse droppings, compost and bone meal dug in. This preparation will save much time later on and as with the sites for dahlias, the mix will then have time to settle and gain some structure before re-planting. Likewise herbs such as sage and thyme can get scruffy and worn out, these too can be divided up and replanted at the end of the month. As with the lawn-loving Breton in the Asterix books, an Englisher’s pride is his lawn.

January Gardening Diary Having vigorously scattered the worms casts with the besom we may now apply topdressing at around four pounds a square yard, this may be gently spread back and forth with the back of a rake and a very calming job it is too. Cloches. We don't seem to see as many nowadays but they are essential for drying the soil and warming up the ground prior to sowing seed. By setting cloches out now we may gain ourselves a month's head start with the crop and be in a position come Spring to be gloating at the neighbours over our speedy crops. If cloches were put out at the beginning of the month we may, after the Ides, presume to sow some onion, lettuce, radish, broad bean and round seeded pea. Wood ashes from the wood burner will be greatly appreciated on the onion bed, important to store these in a dry place before use. Seed potatoes may be stood eye ends uppermost to start the chitting process. Faded flowers on Azaleas may be pinched off as one passes by. There are little jobs and big jobs to be seen to wherever we look. For those of us of a brooding, melancholy nature or those prone to ennui, work in the garden is the best possible remedy. There should be no time left for brooding or boredom.
