ers, d a e R r a De We can’t quite believe we are on the countdown to Christmas and on our fourth edition of the Diary! We hope you have enjoyed the new look diary over the last few months? Please continue to let us know what you would like to see or contribute to the content in the diary. We are always looking for local stories from local people – please do get in touch. December is always a very busy month for us all, always lots on – do check our What’s On page for local festive events & activities. Christmas can be the best of times or the worst of times. We are guilty of putting a lot of pressure on ourselves to have that ‘perfect’ family Christmas. Some of us will be alone or will have lots of family and friends around us - but still feel alone; some of us will be missing loved ones we’ve lost this year. Lots of us will be worrying about how we are going to pay for it. When you do your Christmas shopping why not buy one extra of something for someone less fortunate than you? See P50 (foodbank article) for further details. The commercialisation of Christmas is always an issue, how can we counter this? Maybe ask someone who might be on their own to lunch, or pop some home-made mince pies in and have a Christmas drink with them. Come to a local service at Christ Church or Horam Chapel for candlelit carols and fun Christingle services for a real community, festive experience. Whether you have a faith or not, most of us still celebrate Jesus birthday, go to page 48 for some more thoughts about the reason for the season. And finally, let’s shop local! Here in Horam we are lucky to have some great shops and cafés, including a fantastic new butcher. Let’s keep our high street alive by choosing gifts and food from local, independent traders. Don’t forget the Horam Christmas Fun Evening on 6th December, we hope to see you there. Wishing our readers, advertisers, contributors and volunteers a very happy Christmas & New Year!

Our advertisers would like to wish their customers a very Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year. The snow fell softly without a sound , Even the wind was quiet, Watching with awe , As tree & hedgerow, field & meadow, Slowly changed colour from black to white . The night was silent, More silent than that night, Those thousand , thousand years ago, When a star shone brightly Over a humble stable , Proclaiming the birth of One , Who, too, would transform Black to white And cover a world of darkness With his eternal light. PLANNING UPDATE Rosemead Farm

You will have seen that work has begun on site. The house on site has been demolished, some of the telegraph poles have been replaced in the back west field as they were rotten, the ground is beginning to be dug over and they have removed approx. 62 metres of ancient hedgerow and cut down one oak tree. Michael Cousins (Chair HPC) has written to Wealden about the large stretch of hedge removed in comparison to the final approved plan. He has yet to hear back. East Sussex Highways have written to HPC to ask for their comments on 10 street lights from Cuckoo trail bridge to new 30mph sign along Horebeech Lane. The highway proposals include: · a new mini roundabout junction providing access to the proposed housing development · a system of street lighting to illuminate the proposed mini roundabout and adjacent footways. The lighting will extend from the Cuckoo Trail road bridge eastwards to the proposed 30mph speed limit gateway (10 columns). · extension of the 30mph speed limit eastwards and provision of a 40mph buffer speed limit (both subject to further consultation and Traffic Regulation Order) · priority working and a new footway over the Cuckoo Trail road bridge · footway widening improvements along Horebeech Lane up to the new site access. HPC are going to comment that 10 street lights seems excessive and reiterate their original comments that a right hand turn lane is preferable to a mini-roundabout.

Coxlow Farm & Hedgerows

No applications have been submitted yet. As mentioned in last month’s diary at Hedgerows there were originally meant to be for 38 houses but the Town Planners Parker Dann (who have designed the plan and were responsible for Rosemead ) have increased it by almost 50%. Those who made it to their ‘public consultation’ will have had the opportunity to comment on the plans. Areas of concern were: · Too many houses on the site – buying into a rural idyll and then finding yourself on an urban estate is not good. Wealden’s own planning guide is 30 dwellings per hectare. This site is 3 acres = 1.21406 hectares. · Road layout/access onto A267/traffic safety. No thought had been given to the impact of traffic approaching from the south. Four cremations a day will mean increased road load into and out of the crematorium, with traffic queuing behind hearses and funeral corteges. Those with less tolerance may be tempted to overtake this bottleneck and approach the access of Hedgerows onto A267 at speed. If you didn’t get the chance to attend the public consultation, please submit your comments to Mark Best @ Parker Dann – mark @parkerdann.co.uk

If you are interested in being kept up to date about development in Horam, please subscribe to the Residents Group by emailing damocles25@btinternet.com and register for Wealden Alerts www.wealden.gov.uk 12

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM HORAM VILLAGE HALL This past year has been another busy one for the Village Hall Committee, with our continuing improvement works throughout the hall and, at long last, work starting on the provision of the new play equipment and skatepark outside, enabled by funds received from the Merrydown development. Hopefully, you will have noticed by now the outdoor gym equipment that was installed nearly a month ago to the side of the car park. This has been very well received and seems to be getting a considerable amount of use. Inside the hall the toilets have been fully refurbished and new flooring laid in the communal areas. In the past 2 years we have attained approx. ÂŁ25k of funding for our Village Hall Improvement Project and continue to fundraise for future projects which include re-sanding the hall floor, purchase of new staging, upgrade of heating system and relaying the car park. At the AGM held in November, all existing members of the committee agreed to stand again until next November and will be joined by one new member. We would like to thank these volunteers, all the groups represented on the recreation ground for all their services to the community and to everyone in Horam who has supported our community hall. Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2019.

TN21 Environment Aware Community Air Monitoring Project

22

We are a group of local residents with concerns about the environment and, in particular, issues of health, wildlife and global warming. We are embarking on a community project to monitor air quality in Horam and Maynards Green using low cost equipment which will provide real time input to a publically accessible website. The project is based on a proven model already in use by residents of Devonshire West in Eastbourne. (for further information please see http//eastbourneair.com). We anticipate siting about six monitors at suitable locations in the village. The monitors themselves are inconspicuous units which can be suspended from a window ledge and feed in information via WiFi. We are very much hoping that this will be a community building exercise within the Parish and hope to involve schools, youth groups and elderly groups. The cost of each monitor is £35.00 and can be purchased from Friends of the Earth in Eastbourne. You can see the ones already in place by looking up clean air eastbourne. The map is part of the Luftdaten network which maps air quality around the world, the data is sent into the network and has no maintenance therefore no other cost. The monitors have been compared by Dr Kevin Wyche the Professor of Atmospherics at Brighton University who agrees they are very close to the DEFRA monitors for the PM2.5 emissions that are our concern in Horam. We hope some of the community saw the report on ITV News at Ten on the 1st October where it showed the City of Stuttgart in Germany concerned about their air quality so much that a high number of residents had invested in the same Monitors that we are wanting to use here in Horam. They reported as we have that the quality of their monitors are comparable to the DEFRA ones. The report showed them in many locations as well as the map that gives the colour variations on amounts of pollution. We would like this to be a community venture so that children grow in the knowledge that our actions can become the results we will have to live with in the future. Take a look at ‘clean air Eastbourne’ where you will see a short video showing the actual building of these devices and learn about the organisation, it will show you the most updated results in Eastbourne, let’s get Horam on the map. If anyone wishes to participate in a build of these devices, please do get in touch and we will organise it to take place here in Horam. Tel 01435 812253. The Enhancing Horam Committee have stated their support for our project. Please can we remind you that our beloved hedgehogs need the space to travel from garden to garden, so any help you can give by leaving enough space for them to pop under the fences, would be very helpful.

SEASONS GREETINGS EVERYONE Say everyone! Christmas is here, Everybody’s happy, full of good cheer. And of course, putting up the decorations, Setting the scene for the celebrations. Oh, mustn’t forget the food & drink, Never a moment to stop and think, Shopping for presents, sending out greetings. Getting prepared for the family meetings Rushing about, dashing here, dashing there, Ever so busy, not a second to spare. Each of us though, should take some time out, To reflect on what Christmas is really about. It happened one night, a long time ago, Neath brightly lit skies which were all aglow. Greeting the morning, the news of Christ’s birth, Sent from Our Lord to dwell here on earth. Each of us knows the story of old, Virgin Mary, his mother we’re told. Eastern Kings, bearing gifts, travelled far, Relentlessly following the brightest star. Yes, we should remember this date, Ought to rejoice & celebrate. Now is the time for us here on earth to Exalt! Sing praises for Jesus Christ’s birth.

Business Spotlight Declan Davies is a man on a mission. He wants to provide the village with a top quality butcher, offering a wide range to suit all tastes and pockets with an old school style of customer service. By the time you read this Declan will have opened Davies & Sons. Family Butchers on the site of Horam Butchers and is looking to demonstrate why your local butcher is the place to go for quality, local meat, pies and cheeses. He will always go out of his way to help his customers find what they need and is also highly regarded by local farmers/small holders for the service he provides preparing their animals for the table. Family man Dec aged 26, has four children under 10 with his childhood sweetheart Sam and lives in Heathfield. Moving here from Kent where he was a fire alarm technician, Dec embarked on a big career change and began working for his father in law at Butchers Hook on Hailsham Road. Having trained under the expert tuition of Terry Adams for the last 3 ½ years, he realised he had found something that he was really good at and is full of great ideas for his first shop! He is looking to stock as much local produce as possible, including game, Sussex made cheeses and locally hand-made pies. Pop in to discover what is ‘sausage of the week’, what is in this weeks’ seasonal meat pack or pick up some gourmet sausage rolls. If he doesn’t have what you want, he will do his best to get it in for you - you only have to ask. Dec is keen to train up his sons to work for this family business. Declan Jnr age 9, is already showing a big interest in learning the trade. Opening Mon-Sat 6 days a week from 7am-5pm, Dec Apprentice butcher is keen to get to know the people from Horam. This Christmas, he will be offering some top quality meat for your festive centre-piece including local turkeys from J R Sheffield in Vines Cross. So, why not pop in to see what’s on offer and put your Christmas order in?

Let’s shop local. Use it or lose it!

Christmas – a time to explore... We’re all looking for something this Christmas...

Perhaps you’re looking forward to getting to Christmas - to enjoying all the presents, the food, the family and yes...even the jumpers? Or maybe you’re just hanging on through gritted teeth in the hope of getting through Christmas and coming out the other side unscathed? This year discover a new way to approach Christmas by grabbing hold of a joy that lasts beyond the turkey and tinsel, the sparkle and stress! It’s time to rescue Christmas! As Churches in Horam, we want to help all in our community explore the joy of God’s amazing love in sending his Son into the world. Why not take time to come along to one of our services over the coming weeks and discover God’s great news for you. (See the listing on the opposite page - we’d love you to join us)

We wish everyone in Horam and Vines Cross a very happy and meaningful Christmas. PJ Guy

The Nativity:

It came in the darkest of nights To a world gasping; A desert land. It came in the hush To a world waiting As a shadow Waits. It came as a flutter A twilight bird Wings breaking the deepest waters The cries of dreams The sighs of souls. It came tender In the murmur of the newborn In the ache of the swollen heart. It came as a whisper Soft on the lips of hillsides. It came in the song of the stars. It came as a rainfall Unexpected Passing eyes set on throne rooms Iron fists Grand shows. It came, mist-like Through the tear of the mother The sweat of the soil The dew on the cobweb In the cattle shed. It came to its own As hands unfurl Arms reach Eyes bloom. It awoke Like a flower uncurling Like a flame on the darkness And all who saw its light Understood. DanStevers.com

A recent aerial view of the Wealden Crematorium and grounds showing the main buildings, car parking and landscaping work underway

Wealden Crematorium Update

Driving past the crematorium site on the way to Hailsham you might think that there is not much happening but behind the hoardings, and hidden in a dip in the landscape, construction work is moving ahead at a pace. The main buildings, car parking and the landscaping is all due to be completed on schedule. Whilst the construction work will finish around Christmas time the crematorium will not open until early March 2019. This is due to the works to the front entrance having been delayed because Southern Gas Networks need to move a live gas main on the A267 which they are not able to do until December. The Planning Conditions do not allow the crematorium to open for services until the entrance and road improvements have all been completed, which should be by around the end of February. Wealden is planning to arrange open days during January and February so that local businesses and the public can come and visit the new crematorium before it opens. For the curious this will also provide a unique opportunity to see what happens behind the scenes at a crematorium.

Help other families enjoy Christmas Horam Chapel are running a Christmas food collection for Hailsham Foodbank to fill 100 festive food bags for distribution from the first week in December through to Christmas. The purpose of these bags is to give each of the families that redeem the Foodbank vouchers, something festive for the season. Suggested festive items: Tins of biscuits, cheese biscuits, chutneys/ pickles, jars of pickled onions, crackers, napkins, stuffing mix, gravy granules, advent calendars, chocolates, nuts, dates etc. Anything accepted, except for perishable items. Please drop your items off to us at the chapel, please leave in reception if the church is open or outside the front door. Thank you. Horam Chapel, High Street, Horam, TN21 0ER.

I've made a lot of Homemade Irish Cream over the years. After much fiddling to get the taste as close to that-brand-beginning-with-B as possible, this is the one. Two Horam residents have already confirmed this tastes even nicer than the shop bought version, at a fraction of the price. Fabulous to give away as special homemade gifts this Christmas. Or just drink it all yourself! You will never want the shop-bought stuff again. I promise. Homemade Irish Cream - makes 1 litre Ingredients 397g tin of Condensed Milk 360g Evaporated Milk 1 tsp Glycerol 2 tsp Creme de Cacao 1 tsp coffee powder 1 cup (250ml) of whisky Grated dark chocolate to serve Method Put everything except the grated chocolate in a blender. Blend well, ensuring the condensed milk is fully incorporated, as it has a tendency to lurk at the bottom. Pour into a nice bottle. Store it in the fridge. Whilst I'm not convinced refrigeration is essential because of the amount of sugar and alcohol in it, being kept cool prevents the Irish Cream from separating which can happen at room temperature. That is because this Irish Cream doesn’t contain the additives commercial ones have to prevent that happening. So keep it cool, and shake the bottle well each time you have some to ensure everything is fully mixed. Serve in shot glasses with grated dark chocolate over the top (because there aren't enough calories in this already). Or in a tumbler over ice. Almost Off Grid is an online business in Horam. We sell Creme de Cacao, Glycerol and bottles, as well as ingredients, equipment and kits to make your own beer, wine and cider at home. Order online at www.almostoffgrid.co.uk, or call us Monday-Friday on 01435 810199. Click and collect welcome (and free!) Monday-Friday, or we can deliver in the TN21 area. 01435 810199

Annually in early Spring on warm, wet nights, toads cross local roads to spawn in ponds. Many are killed crossing the road (being so small they look just like a leaf) and sadly toad populations nationally are in sharp decline. If you live on or near Foords Lane in Vines Cross and might be able to spare a few hours to help toads across the road (from January to March but dependant on weather conditions) please contact John on either mobile 07940-587404 or via email john.linda1@ btinternet.com Many thanks to ESCC Highways for providing toad crossing signage near Wimbles Farm – please be aware the toads also cross at night by Foords Farm too.

December Gardening Diary ' A warm Christmas, a cold Easter' As in November, the weather this month is rarely an incentive to be out there upside down in a border, but a garden is a relentless tyrant, which may only be tamed when we take every chance to press on. The edges of lawns may have been eroded away or died back from being smothered by overgrowth from the borders, lying leaves, or the depredations of children. The easiest way to make the edges good is to roll a length of turf along the edge and cut around it with a sharp knife, then roll it up, the outlined shape may now be excavated to an inch depth, the base broken down to a tilth and the new turf rolled back into place, a board to stand on will help bed the turf down, expelling any air, there should be no air pockets, especially under the edges. New plantings should be checked from time to time as frost or wind may have loosened the roots and loose plantings rarely survive, we must always have our mallest about us to firm up any loose stakes. Any brassicas in the vegetable plot should likewise be checked for firmness, all brassicas greatly resent any looseness around their feet. Frost and gales in November will have seen to the last of the roses, we may reduce the top growth back a little and remove frosted flowers and hips, this will reduce wind resistance and present a more orderly appearance in the rose garden. This is not the main pruning, which may be done at the end of winter (Though many gardeners do this before Christmas) The harvesting of Brussels sprouts should be in full swing, starting from the bottom up and leaving the green tops until last. In the event of an 'Arctic blast ' being forecast, it may be worthwhile digging up some leeks and parsnips and heeling them into a trench so as to avoid having to harvest by hammer and bolster. Around the Ides of the month we may beg, borrow or otherwise purloin a number of twigs from some of the more forward of the trees and shrubs, including yellow flowering jasmine, willow, winter flowering viburnums, berberis, hawthorn, witch hazel and contorted hazel, these, when brought into a warm room and put in water should be in flower by Christmas, hinting at the rebirth and new life just around the corner. The No-mans' land behind the bonfire heap may supply teasels, whilst sea thistle and artichoke heads saved from last month will make for a fine Christmas display when spray -painted by the more responsible of the junior public. The dried seed pods of Honesty make a fine sight shivering in a vase on the piano. Whilst the keen gardener will have been digging over the soil since Trafalgar Day, it is not too late to keep up the digging when conditions allow. The more soil we can get exposed to the weather the better. Areas reserved for hardy annuals should be dug over as well, but unless the soil is very poor there is no need to dig in compost or manure as annuals flower best on poorer soil. Now most of the leaves have dropped, we may appreciate nature's architecture in the boughs and burls of the trees around us whilst also taking worried note of deciduous trees and shrubs that are starting to crowd over the lawns and borders, this encroachment eventually leads to a thin, mossy lawn and straggling shrubs which are straining for the dwindling light, in such cases we must be ruthless with the chain saw and loppers; Nature is constantly trying to crowd us out, thus in the time of the Egg kings the quality of a Saxon was measured by his willingness to strip to his bear pelt underwear in all seasons and with halberd in hand, wage unceasing battle on the forest around him. So, after exerting ourselves thus and with the nights long and dark we may look forward to many happy hours wallowing in the bath, using up all the family's hot water and with the new season's seed catalogue firmly in hand, ruminate over next year's colours and crops in the garden.
