How was your March? Did you enjoy the diverse and varied weather conditions?! We hope they haven’t played too much havoc with your gardening plans? See this months’ gardening diary for some sage advice on what to be up to out there in April. We had a good response to our local offers page last month, so we are back this month with some more great offers for you on P68. We are very lucky in Horam to have our own High Street, but it will only thrive if we use it! This Easter why not get your meat from Davies & Sons, your cards from All Dressed Up; fresh locally baked bread, home-made scotch eggs & banoffie pie from the Village Stores; beautiful flowers & gifts from The Cuckoo Flower Co; a fabulous slice of cake or some vintage, unique clothes, gifts & homewares from Tpodz & The Horam Emporium? Or a fab, foodie Easter hamper from Two Sisters Deli or treat yourself or someone else to a brand new you at Cutting Edge or Horam Natural Therapy Centre – it’s all within walking distance! The Co-op have advised the Diary that work to repair their window will commence on 26th April and should finish around 17th May. Further investigation into the odour pervading the store is also underway. Don’t forget the community fund that the Co-op offer to local groups and societies – pop in store to see Karen Ellis, the Co-op member Pioneer for Horam & Heathfield or visit www.coop.co.uk and search for local community funding for more information. Easter is upon us and we hope you spend it well, catching up with loved ones, sharing a meal and eating lots of delicious chocolate. Easter for me (Lucy) is the most important time of the year. It’s more than just time off work, bunnies, eggs & chocolate. For me it marks the anniversary of Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven — and observing this holiday can teach Christians a lot more about faith than cute baby bunnies & chicks! Easter starts with Good Friday, which commemorates Jesus' crucifixion and death. Where Good Friday is essentially a day of mourning, Easter Sunday celebrates Jesus' evasion of death. It's not uncommon for Christians to greet each other by saying "Christ has risen" in the same way they'd say "Merry Christmas." It celebrates Christians' belief in the divine power of Jesus and the hope that loss leads to something new. Check out the Easter services at Christ Church & Horam Chapel if you want to join in the celebration – a warm welcome is guaranteed! Find out what Easter means to someone else from the village on P74. We are always keen to hear from our readers – if you have an interesting hobby or would like to share a day in your life – at work or in the community, we would love to hear from you. Just drop us an email to the address below. Front cover image credit: Phil Williams/Horam Manor Farm. Best regards,

PLANNING UPDATE
As we write, the archaeologists are currently on site looking at evidence of iron ore pits, believed to be related to the furnace at Boring House Farm and the smelting works at Marle Green. Hopefully more information should follow this month. Sadly, it appears that Bovis are not engaging with the Parish Council who like the residents, have concerns over the bridge, the lighting and the roundabout planned. See the Horam Parish Council update on P42 for more details. There is evidence of possible further development on Horebeech Lane beyond Rosemead being explored, as surveyors have been taking measurements during March to the east of the Rosemead site. This is currently outside of the current development boundary for Horam. However, Wealden District Council have advised that if the Planning Inspector decides that there aren’t enough new houses allocated to Horam, then she can propose that it be changed. Watch this space. The Diary asked Wealden how the initial CIL payment of c£1.3m from Bovis will be spent. They advised that currently the system allows for a payment of £100 per existing household in the parish to be passed to the Parish Council to spend locally. The remaining amount sits with the District Council and if they deem further infrastructure is required locally, some of it may be invested in the parish.
Bimbo’s Woodyard
A revised planning application has been submitted for this site. It appears that cheaper building materials (wood cladding rather than tile hanging) have been suggested and slight alterations to the space between the 2 executive homes.
Southside (Horebeech Lane)/Hedgerows (A267 by May Garland)/Coxlow Farm No more news or planning applications for any of the above.
Crematoriam
The official opening date for this facility has been put back to May 2019 (originally March 2019). There will be open days in May and information for local businesses on how to engage with the crematorium, at some point during this month.
Wealden Local Plan
The Planning Inspector has concluded her initial consideration of the submitted Local Plan. Details for hearing sessions will be set out in her forthcoming Matters, Issues & Questions, which will be published on the examination website. Further details will be provided in next month’s issue.

Local people: Fighting corruption in Sussex The present writer, having just read of the litany of villainy and municipal corruption that made possible the Rosemead development on Horebeech Lane, found himself so shocked and appalled that such goings-on could happen in God's own England that, to calm down and purge evil thoughts of the injustice of it, he betook himself on a forced march up to Old Heathfield and beyond. During the walk he found himself ruminating at the edge of field in Cade Street and, dwelling over the mutability of human affairs, realised with a start that he was gazing at the monument which marks the spot where Jack Cade was slain. Failing memory was wracked; was there here a dimly remembered story of a rising against corruption and a violent retribution by the state?
10
So who was this rebel who rocked the state in 1450? Alas very little is known, even the name is dubious. John or Jack Cade was probably born in Sussex between 1420 and 1430 and was a member of the lower orders, possibly a yeoman farmer, though he was also claimed as the son of a doctor from Surrey and again, as a dabbler in sorcery. Wherever he came from, he undoubtedly had a strong character and his crusading passion to correct the abuses of the state saw him nicknamed 'Jack mend-all'. This natural leader soon found himself at the head of a widespread rebellion and hailed as the 'Captain of Kent'. What were the roots of this disorder? The war with France was not going well, with the loss of Normandy and attacks on the coastal counties by French forces, the country was debt ridden and taxes were rising to pay for the ongoing war, whilst foreign markets for English wool were being lost. To cap all this there was a wide-spread belief that the king was surrounded by grasping and unscrupulous advisors, or as their manifesto, called 'The Proclamation of Grievances' puts it: 'Considering that the king, our sovereign Lord by the insatiable, covetous and malicious persons Cade Street monumentwhere that daily and nightly are about his Highness, Jack Cade lost his life. and daily inform him that good is evil and evil is good'
Local people: Fighting corruption in Sussex Rebellion is really as misnomer, as the uprising was more a widespread movement to restore justice and order in the land and rid the king of his corrupt ministers. In that June of 1450 Cade led towards London a motley collection of citizens, including shopkeepers, craftsmen, MPs, knights, squires and churchmen. The king thought to quell the movement quickly and sent his men to meet the rebels. Cade here shows cunning in laying a successful ambush at Sevenoaks and routs the king's forces. Having held the 'Place of Slaughter' he strips the armour from their dead leader and dons it himself. The king took immediate fright and fled to Warwickshire, whereupon Cade led his forces into London. Having naturally set up headquarters in a public house, his men set up tribunals and tried, convicted and beheaded some of the king's chief ministers. Having had his manifesto accepted by the king's representatives, Cade led his men back through the city, but the mob, having found itself masters of the city, with all its merchandise and ale houses intact naturally succumbed to drunkeness and pillaging and fornication (as indeed any lowly denizen of Sussex should do). The Londoners thereupon turned against the rampaging country folk and running battles took place all along London Bridge, hundreds were slain and injured. The Archbishop of Canterbury mediated and pardoned Cade's men in the name of the king, but no sooner had the rebel army left London than the ministers reneged on their agreement, and the king revoked his pardons. A writ was sent out for the apprehension of Cade and a price of 1000 marks (660 pounds) put on his head. Having been chased across Kent, Cade was finally cornered by Alexander Iden and slain in a garden in present day Cade Street, his corpse inevitably quartered and his parts sent out to the country as warning against treason. The social and economic abuses of the time went unaddressed and the king's reneging on his promises led to further rebellion, the biggest being in Sussex and led from Robertsbridge, this time the tone was far bloodier and the target was the king himself. ' But them as comes to Sussex, they mustn't push and shove, for Sussex will be Sussex and Sussex won't be druv' (W.V. Cook)

The Diary of a Villager Homemade Citrus Household Cleaner It’s April, so is it Spring Cleaning time? You may have read about ingredients contained in household cleaning products, and how we should use fewer of them to reduce the chemicals in our homes. I should start out by saying: I’m no expert. Cleaning products containing chemicals is probably a given, and there are many chemicals which are entirely harmless. After all, an everyday product like salt is a chemical. And some ingredients you include in your homemade cleaner will be the same as the active ingredients in those you buy. But some of them won’t be. And there is mounting evidence that expensive ‘antibacterial’ soaps and cleaners are no more effective than good old soap and water. So why not have a go at making your own cleaner? This Homemade Citrus Household Cleaner has replaced a range of kitchen, bathroom and floor products in our cupboard under the sink. It’s perfect for use in every room, and it smells great too. To make it, simply add the following ingredients to a 500ml spray bottle: • 6 tablespoons Distilled White Vinegar, from the supermarket • 2 tablespoons of liquid Castille soap, widely available online • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • Half tablespoon of Borax/Borax Substitute, available from your local hardware shop • 20 drops of Grapefruit Essential Oil. Top the spray bottle up with hand-hot water from the tap. Give it all a good shake to incorporate everything. Then grab a cloth and get cracking! Your Cleaner will store indefinitely, though the fragrance evaporates over time. If you want to give it boost, just add a few more drops of essential oil. Bev Toogood AlmostOffGrid.co.uk/blog CHURCHES TOGETHER IN HEATHFIELD & DISTRICT LENTEN REFLECTIONS 2019 “ HOW AND WHY DID JESUS PRAY? “ All sessions held at 6.30 pm. at Heathfield Community Centre, concluding around 8.00pm with refreshments. Everyone is welcome. Sunday 7th April: - Matthew 46 – Jesus Prays on the Cross Speaker: Mr. Marcellus Edmonds

COMMUNITY Young at Heart have had a busy month! Having hosted a Scottish Day we have since hosted a Welsh Day for St David's Day. The morning was a pottery workshop kindly supervised and prepared by Alex O'Reilly. Members enjoyed Shepherds Pie for lunch followed by tossing pancakes with a choice of toppings. Maynards Green School joined us for the afternoon with Wendy joining us to show off her wool spinning expertise with the opportunity for others to try. We then had lambs visit which formed good entertainment for all! For tea we baked Bara Brith and celebrated another Young at Heart Birthday. Young at Heart are offering a ÂŁ10 lunch for those with their own transport. Please contact Rachel Gibson, Tel: 07971 032667. We would love to meet you!
Are you retired, widowed, lonely or just bored? Would you enjoy spending an active day outside your home? With free local transport there and back? If the answer is YES then we would love to meet you! Please call 07971 032667 or visit youngatheart.me.uk

Lakeside is located on Horam Manor Farm behind the newly built housing estate on the old Merrydown Cider factory site. Lakeside overlooks one of the nine fishing lakes, and backs on to the riding stables. It shares the estate with nature trails, an art studio, small independent workshops, and a friendly modern camping and touring park. Martin and Rachel took over in 2010 and with over 30 years experience in the catering trade have been improving the business and building since arriving. The kitchen has had a major refit, a new bar and cellar installed offering a growing selection of draught lagers and bitters, the garden has been landscaped with ample seating and a play area. The Sunday Carvery has proven to be very popular, and with spring just around the corner, Friday and Saturday evening service will commence again offering bistro style specials until the end of the summer.

April Gardening Diary
' Rain on Good Friday and Easter day, a good year for grass and a bad for hay.'
62
Having survived the long gloom of Lent, by mid-month the gardener will feel fitter from his abstentions and feel in good shape to get on in the garden, a good thing as April is a month of many tasks which will brook no delay. Growth is now so strong that it will soon be too late to prune or transplant many plants without risk of injury. Sown seeds should be checked and any that look doubtful should be re-sown now rather than delaying on the off-chance of improvement. There is truth in the old saying 'One for the pigeon and one for the crow, one to rot and one to grow.' April is a good month for planting Laurels, conifers, hollies and other evergreen shrubs and hedging plants. Any rose pruning should be finished off this month. The equatorial bloom we experienced in late February rather kick-started things, so for most gardeners rose pruning will probably have been done by now, in fact heat in february is the worst possible thing for nature, hence the old saying 'All the days of the year curse a fair Februeer.' Climbing roses may also have been tackled last month, the small side branches off the main stems cut back to two inches. Hybrid tea bush roses should be cut back to four or five outward facing buds. It will be worth feeding the roses now and later on in the summer to encourage the new displays. Spraying with a fungicide at fortnightly intervals until June will keep the leaves shiny and fresh. Evergreens such as laurel, cupressus, box and yew may also be pruned now as well as overgrown ivy. Towards the end of the month we may plant dahlias, fairly deep to ensure the new shoots miss any late frosts. As Forsythias finish flowering they should be pruned, cutting out the stems that have just flowered and leaving the young shoots which will give the best displays next year. Daffodils and other early flowering bulbs should be dead-headed and allowed to die down naturally. Many of us resent these untidy obstacles to our lawn mowers but the bulbs must be given time to build up reserves for next spring. Lawn mowing starts in earnest this month. We may begin by finding our plastic grass rakes and sweep up any twigs and debris we have been ignoring all winter, maybe even locating our besoms to scatter worm casts, as these, when flattened by the mower make admirable sites for germinating weed seeds. The reader, having remembered to have the mower serviced, sharpened and oiled last autumn will now be ready to do the first mowing of the season, only taking off the top inch or so to tidy things up and as growth accelerates we may by degrees lower the blades. Being a job we could delegate to other family members we might take this opportunity at the beginning of the season to tutor any of those under-employed youths and adolescents we have uncovered about the house in the art of mowing the lawn without losing digits or even whole limbs. Nothing could lower the esteem further or be more ignominious to a man in future life than having to tell his peers he lost his big toe in the mower. The vegetable garden: Potatoes, those who commune with the moon will know that root crops go in from the beginning of the waning gibbous to the new moon, the March full moon fell on the 21st and April's on the 19th, thus we may set out our pre-chitted tubers until the 5th but not
April Gardening Diary again until the 20th. The gentleman who discovers celebrity gossip magazines about the house may profitably use them as lining to the potato trenches, this material will expand and hold water, saving time with watering later in spring and summer. We may continue sowing lettuce, peas and radishes as well as Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, broad beans and kale. Parsnips sown last month may be thinned, this is very important as overcrowding in the nursery will lead to thin straggly specimens which will never recover their figures. In the event of a frosty spell, that bale of straw we have been carrying about this last month may now be used to spread around the haulm of any new potatoes that are showing. Main crop carrots should be sown towards the end of the month. Leeks and onions may still be sown but without delay. Trenches for runner beans may now be dug. For a bumper crop we may dig in a foot and a half of compost or horsey stuff which will settle down in time for sowing or planting out later in May. Though Runner beans are a relatively easy crop, they do give what they get. So as the sun strengthens and the multifarious cotyledons of weed tarnish the earth we must keep that hoe going in the beds and the borders, aside from giving fine exercise to our pectorals and pelvic floors, this frequent airing and stirring of the soil really is a great aid to growth and general well-being in the garden.

National cuckoo shortage?! The Heffle Cuckoo Fair happens every year in April. This year it is on Saturday, 27 April from 11:00-16:00. It dates back to an old tradition started in 1315 where Dame Heffle (Old name for Heathfield) used to arrive at a gypsy market and release Cuckoos to announce the start of Spring. The Heffle Cuckoo Fair is held at the original site at Cade Street, Old Heathfield. It begins with a procession and then Dame Heffle arrives to release the Cuckoos. Unfortunately, Cuckoos are notoriously people shy and hard to locate, so racing
pigeons are used instead. This is followed by various performances throughout the day from local groups including Morris Dancing, musical groups, dance troupes and much more. There are numerous stalls representing local crafts & art, locally produced food & drink, plants, charity & community groups. Also to enjoy are birds of prey, vintage cars, an old fashioned fun fair, dog show, kids activities and lots, lots more! It is a fun day out for all the family. Time to escape the ‘ordinary’
It’s that time of year when the long winter months are drawing to a close and as we emerge from our period of hibernation our thoughts turn to sunshine, excitement and some serious R & R away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. The downside is, in order to discover our ‘happy place’ we will have to spend a serious amount of time researching destinations and even then we won’t be entirely sure we’ve made the right choice until we get there – a serious gamble with a lot of hard-earned cash. Enter the Travel Concept – an award-winning agency, based in Mayfield. Many people do not think to employ the services of a travel agent, believing that it will ‘bump-up’ the cost of a holiday, but this is simply not the case, indeed there are better deals to be had and a wealth of knowledge to tap into that you just can’t find on Google. The benefits don’t just stop when you’ve made your booking either, help and advice with regard to passports and visas, flight check-ins and as much information as you need about the location to ensure your vacation is a success. Always on hand, the girls ensure you are supported right up until the time you step back through your own front door, totally rejuvenated. It’s hard to choose from so many remarkable locations, but right now the Far East is popular, with Cambodia topping that list. There’s a special something about this stunning part of the World – an almost palpable air of mystique and sense of authentic adventure that inspires all who visit. Perhaps it’s the merging of ancient and modern worlds or the sheer rich diversity of it’s amazing land and seascapes. Explore impressive temples with orange-robed monks, discover charming towns and new cultures, or venture deep into a vast tropical wilderness – home to an array of wildlife. Head for the sunny shores, beautiful beaches with protected reefs. Discover private island resorts offering exceptional luxury. Best of all you can do as much or as little as you like! Whether its sandy beaches, snowy mountains, extreme adventures, or simply just pottering down a river, exploring new cultures, architecture and scenery – don’t leave it to chance, talk to the experts!
