2022 ANNUAL REPORT

The Armenian Nation is pushing through one of the most trying times of its modern history. Over the past three years, a seemingly endless cycle of atrocity has tested the resilience of our nation with war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and the loss of ancestral homeland. With this, the dictatorial regime of Azerbaijan seeks to break us – psychologically, physically, mentally. And break we shall not. Now, more than ever, it is imperative to reach deep into the coffers of our existence and find that unwavering willpower and strength to push on. At Huys Foundation, our response is resolute. We are renewing our pledge to our mission: empowering the brightest minds to obtain an excellent education, with a commitment to Armenia, the Armenian Nation, and Humanity. Today, we commit: 1. to increasing the number and amount of our scholarships, 2. to strengthening our focus on strategic areas of study, and 3. to doing our part to ensure that all forcibly displaced students from Artsakh have access to quality higher education. The power of education is limitless. Since our inception, we have seen the seeds of this power sprinkled across the personal stories of hundreds of applicants. Their application letters have revealed the maturity with which they process calamity and the resolve with which they approach the doors of higher education, clenched in their hands the roadmap to an eternal Armenia and a more just and peaceful world. It is this power that we are set to galvanize. As ever, the words of our motto ring true: Through Education to Eternity. The educated mind never succumbs. The fruits of the educated mind never perish. Instead, they pave the way to eternity. Our history has revealed and affirmed this lesson. Our future will bear witness to it as well. On Saturday, June 11, 2022, Huys Foundation held its inaugural Huys Gathering of Minds in Pasadena, California, bringing together around 50 participants for a vision-based discussion on Armenia and Armenians and their role within Humanity.

The program commenced with a benediction by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, expressing a powerful endorsement of Huys Foundation.

8

Next, CA State Senator Anthony Portantino delivered a special address, framing the significance of educationcentered organizations like Huys.

HUYSFOUNDATION.ORG

The opening continued with a presentation of our work by the Huys team, followed by dynamic one-on-one interviews.

First joining was Dr. Shushan Karapetian, Deputy Director of the USC Institute of Armenian Studies, who expounded upon the importance of not only preserving the Armenian language in the Diaspora as a pillar of identity, but also actually using it and treating it as a living construct.

ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Attendees then listened in on a video message by Narek Van, lawyer and CoFounder of Era 405, who touched upon developing cultural policy through multidisciplinary scientific analysis and acknowledging the strategic importance of Armenian Studies.

9

10

Next up, Prof. Keith Watenpaugh, Professor and Director of Human Rights Studies Program at UC Davis, shared insights on how Armenian identity postgenocide developed in the absence of political citizenship.

Dr. Sona Tajiryan, Postdoctoral Researcher at GIA, took the stage next, taking the discussion back 500 years to a time when Armenian merchants acted as mediators between empires and corporations, thus filling liminal spaces.

Also joining via video message was Larisa Hovannisian, Founder and CEO of Teach For Armenia, who asserted that Armenia's current education system was not designed by Armenians for Armenians and highlighted solutions.

Tigran Shahverdyan, representative of Gituzh, then made the case for Armenia boosting its support of R&D efforts for the purpose of developing knowledge.

Danielle Mikaelian Harvard Law School Juris Doctorate (J.D.) Huys Scholar 2022

“Promoting Justice and Accountability. I find it essential to have Armenians, or Armenian advocates, in legal positions of power. As an Armenian Harvard Law student, I hope to gain the knowledge to promote justice for the Armenian community, specifically through ensuring that there are repercussions for human rights abuses and discrimination against Armenians. As a student and graduate, I plan to act as a staunch supporter of Armenian issues, working with the Armenian Bar Association and international organizations to pass legislation upholding our causes and protecting our rights. As a Harvard Law School (HLS) student, I plan to join the Harvard Armenian Law Student Association to spotlight Armenian issues on the Harvard campus. I also hope to work with the Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations on international human rights work that spotlights the injustices perpetrated by other nations and demands accountability for their actions. Through working with Harvard Law’s International Human Rights Clinic, I will work alongside my fellow students and professors to target human rights issues relevant to Armenia and the Armenian nation.” Read Danielle’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/danielle-mikaelian/

Alec Ohanian Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health Masters in Public Health Huys Scholar 2022

“Seeing the immoral distribution of resources across our societies, the obvious choice for me was to fill the discord between wanting to create an equitable society, and actually working to make it a reality. For this reason, I will be taking a gap year in my medical studies to pursue an MPH with a concentration in Health Systems & Policy, and certifications in Global Health and Evaluation of International Health Programs. Following the completion of my MPH, I will apply into an Internal Medicine residency with the goal of specializing in Hematology/Oncology. Long-term, I intend to repatriate to Armenia once my educational loans are at a manageable amount. I continuously strive to understand the Armenian healthcare system and focus my projects to create a steppingstone for others to get more involved, because collectively – we can do more. I have already made connections with medical professionals in-country and from the diaspora for fruitful long-term collaboration. For the immediate term, these connections will facilitate my ability to dedicate the MPH capstone project at Johns Hopkins to strengthening the Armenian healthcare system. Specific projects I am working on are a global Armenian population health survey to better characterize our needs, and various initiatives to improve access to care for children with Type 1 diabetes in Armenia. One thing I am certain of is that our fate is in our hands. I intend to do my part to ensure a better future for our country and for our people.” Read Alec’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/alec-ohanian/

Julia Hintlian Harvard University PhD in the Study of Religion Huys Scholar 2022 (Armenian Studies Scholarship)

“My doctoral research focuses on Christian traditions in the context of the religiously diverse Silk Road in the late ancient period (approximately 200-1100 CE). I spent nearly two years living on-campus as a special student at the Saint Nersess Armenian Seminary in Armonk, New York. I have also spent considerable time teaching in the Armenian Church (at the Gevorkian Seminary in Etchmiadzin, Armenia, and at the Armenian Patriarchate’s seminary in Jerusalem, as a special guest of Patriarch Nourhan Manougian). I have two goals that I want to accomplish within the field of Armenian Studies in the future. First, I want to continue teaching both in and about the Armenian Apostolic Church, which has an ancient intellectual-spiritual tradition called the “vartabedutyun/ վարդապետութիւն.” Second, I want to encourage and foster more interdisciplinary and cross-cultural awareness between Armenian Studies and other academic fields.” Read Julia’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/julia-hintlian/ Established in 2019, the Armenian Studies Scholarship is awarded to a deserving scholar focusing on the interrelation of global civilization and Armenian heritage and the contributions of the Armenian nation to humanity.

Anna Hovsepyan King’s College London PhD, MPhil in Law Research Huys Scholar 2022 ( John Aroutiounian Scholarship for Service to Humanity)

“The new wave of courtroom deepfaked evidence is a tragedy for justice and requires research and understanding on how to combat falsifications, which my research will attempt to do. While for some not familiar with the topic might seem as if this is an exaggeration of the situation, as doctored videos have always been around, it is worth noting that there have already been cases with deepfaked recordings appearing in courtrooms. Aims: This research aims to identify to what extent synthetic media, in particular deepfakes, are compatible with justice, the rule of law, free speech, and democracy. It also aims to investigate whether the legal systems are ready to adapt to the changes it brings and the extent to which regulatory models can be adapted to the unique challenges it presents (e.g. from malicious deepfaked courtroom evidence and deepfaked child pornography to its use in metaverse and as a tool to assist people with special needs).” Read Anna’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/anna-hovsepyan/ Established in 2019, the John Aroutiounian Scholarship for Service to Humanity is awarded to a deserving scholar with a demonstrated commitment to ethical leadership and service to others. Gevorg Minasyan Massachusetts Institute of Technology Masters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy (DEDP) Huys Scholar 2022

“In many emerging economies, including Armenia, policy decisions are often made without rigorous research and sound evidence. As a consequence, most policies targeting education, healthcare, environment, and other vital aspects of our lives are not appropriately designed, lacking to induce efficient allocation of public recourses and tangible changes in social well-being. I do believe, however, that things could have evolved differently under well-informed decisions by policymakers and efficient targeting of public policies. My experience with real-life economics started in 2013 when I joined the research department of the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA). Since the aftermath of the global financial crisis, the CBA had been persevering to enhance consumer protection and financial inclusion through different literacy programs. However, most of the projects were based on anecdotal evidence and country-specific experiences. Hence, our team was delegated to evaluate these projects through experimental research and conduct a costbenefit analysis, which later translated into policy decisions and action plans. I hope to leverage the expertise and resources available at MIT to contribute toward cutting-edge research in Armenia and join the efforts in mitigating the gap between “the haves” and “the have-nots” that is still painful for many promising young people.” Read Gevorg’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/gevorg-minasyan/

Armine Kalbakian Columbia University Masters in Public Health Huys Scholar 2022

“I was born in Los Angeles, the product of three generations of diasporan displacement. I was raised in a strong Armenian community and inevitably grew up with an incessant longing to return to my homeland. Every decision I made regarding my academic and professional career was therefore contingent on its future added value for Armenia and the Armenian nation. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Artsakh War, I experienced a slight shift in my academic plans. I concluded that Armenia possessed more existential needs, notably those of national security and public health. As a result, I decided to pursue a Master of Public Health (MPH) and was eventually accepted to Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. Through my MPH in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia, I hope to support the Armenian nation in the following areas: Immigrant Health and Social Services, Primary Health Care in Armenia, Reproductive Health in Armenia, Higher Education for First-Generation Students. Every step I have taken and every step I will take is in the direction of our homeland. Through the Huys Foundation, I hope to inspire others and build a network of peers who will do the same.” Read Armine’s commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/armine-kalbakian/

Viktorya Harutyunyan American University of Armenia Bachelor of Engineering Sciences Huys Scholar 2021, 2022 (Engineering in Armenia Scholarship)

“I consider my mission to concentrate on my long-term goal and do my best from now to invest in the education of engineering and to develop an engineering mindset in children from their earliest years. To accomplish even a tiny part of this goal with my current knowledge and skills, which I gained during my academic program, I participate in a program enabling me to share my knowledge of engineering and mathematics with children from villages near the border. On the other hand, my relatively short-term goal is to be a part of the process of Armenia’s industrial development and wise use of our natural resources. Currently, I am more concentrated on developing my skills as a mechanical design engineer. With hard work and a team of professional engineers, it is possible to use our country’s natural resources and benefit from our manufacturing and recycling. Fortunately, there are and hopefully will be more initiatives that deal with plastic recycling in Armenia. Also, the concept of recycling is becoming widespread among people, which is very important nowadays.” Read Viktorya's commitment letter in full: https://huysfoundation.org/scholars/victoria-harutyunyaan/ Established in 2021, the Engineering in Armenia Scholarship is awarded to a deserving scholar studying in an academic program in Engineering and related fields at educational institutions in Armenia, with demonstrated accomplishments in their area of interest.
