program A classic love story about a girl whose heart is torn between two men. Huong is a beautiful and privileged Vietnamese girl who has grown up knowing that she would marry her childhood love, Quang, the boy next door. All is well until Quang suddenly leaves to study in America for two years. Huong befriends a noble thief named Bao and their bond grows stronger as she gets more involved with his family. When Quang returns to Vietnam, Huong discovers that she is torn between the two. Will Quang be able to win back her love, or has Bao and Huong's two hearts already become one?

message

from the president kevin dao

First off, I would like to thank everyone in attendance for your support by being here with us tonight in our 33rd Annual Vietnamese Culture Night: “Two of Hearts”. In the past few months, over 100 students at UC Irvine have come together and spent countless hours at meetings, rehearsals, late night practices, prop sessions, boba fundraisers, sponsorship runs, and everything else in between. Why? It’s because of tonight. Tonight, they want to present to you and everyone else in the community all their hard work and dedication into an entertaining show that is created, managed, and performed by college students. It is amazing at what we can accomplish. I would like to thank everyone on staff as well the members. Taking the laughter and smiles on your faces, add a little dash of stress (from your contributions) to that, throw a lot of chaos into the mix, and then finally stir it all together with your commitment and passion for VSAUCI to create an amazing year. It is an honor and a privilege for me to be your president and witness how the organization evolved in the past three years that I’ve been involved in. On behalf of the Vietnamese Student Association at UCI, I would like to thank the friends, family, colleagues of our crew as well as our sponsors and the community, on and off campus, for what you have done for us. Without your help, this night would not have been possible. And once again, I would like to thank everyone in attendance because without you all, we would have no one to share all our hard work with. Sit back and enjoy the show folks!

message

from the vcn coordinators Welcome to The 33rd annual VSAUCI Culture Night 'Two of Hearts!' Last year was a tale about a comedy that followed four friends as they went on a journey to find treasure. This year, I wanted to focus culture night into being a drama. I drew inspiration from various love stories, and even from real life. As you watch the story unfold, keep in mind the title of the story itself. "Two of Hearts" is more than just a card. It's representative of the interaction between the characters, and the characters themselves as well. I hope you enjoy watching this story as much as I've enjoyed creating it.

david luong After directing Culture Night two years in a row, I was fortunate enough to come back for the three-peat. The story is darker than the last two, but I was looking forward to trying something different. Two of Hearts started with a random conversation last summer with my co-coordinator, Bryan Chiem, about The Phantom of the Opera. By the end of the night, we already had half of the script developed. Looking back, the journey to this night went by in the blink of an eye. Before the night is over, I just want to take the time to thank each and every one of you for coming out. It really makes all our hard work worthwhile to see our friends and family members in the audience. I also cannot express enough my gratitude towards all the support behind the curtain. Everyone involved in the show has sacrificed weeks into preparing for this show. I hope the audience will clap extra loud for them tonight.

ABOUT CHOIR VSA UCI Choir was founded in 2005 to perform in VSA UCI’s 26th Vietnamese Culture Night (VCN): Silhouette of a Distant Family. The choir brings together individuals with varying musical backgrounds and provides an opportunity to learn from one another, while at the same time, incorporating everyone into one unified harmonious voice. Over the past seven years, choir has grown to perform for other events aside from VCNs, such as the Tet Festival and Rose Pageant. This past year, VSA UCI Choir was promoted to year-long active status, allowing for a further increase in vocal presence and dedicated members that want to express their love for music and entertainment.

ABOUT modern Our new name Because we are an entry team, this is where it all begins. Whether it is about one's growing interest in dance, one's journey to becoming a more charismatic and experienced dancer in the hopes of making it into one's dream team, or simply about creating unforgettable memories with your friends, it all starts with Level V Origins (LVO).

Level 5 Dance Team (formerly known as VSA Modern and Sublime Dance Team) was created in the fall of 2006 as a recreational dance team for the growing Vietnamese student population that had an interest in dancing. The team exists to provide the opportunity for those who have never had previous dance experience to explore hip hop dance. Our goal is to develop and hone leadership skills through our shared passion for dance while also expressing our Vietnamese-American identity.

ABOUT traditional dance The VSA UCI Traditional Dance Group (TRANCE) began in 2004 and aims to reach high cultural value through performances. The dances are choreographed and performed by VSA UCI members and friends. The goal is not just to entertain or to dance, but also to explore and interpret the vast culture through learning traditional dance routines. TRANCE hopes to elevate the significance of Vietnamese culture through the use of Vietnamese songs and dance performances.

ABOUT lion dance Gi贸 Nam Mua Lan (Southern Wind Lion Dance) was founded in Fall 2004 originally as a fund raising group for the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) of the University of California, Irvine and performs throughout the Orange County area. The primary aim of the VSA is one which strives to preserve and promote the Vietnamese culture in our school and surrounding community. Since then the team has developed new goals but we still dance for the love and fun of the art. We hope to create strong bonds, not only among our teammates, but with other lion dancing groups across the OC. Gathering our influence from the Four Winds, we combine the traditional and modern style of lion dancing to form our own unique way of presenting the art.

about shadow ninjas

The art of Shadow Ninjas has been around on Earth for 400 years but it wasn't until five years ago that the secret arts would find its way to UCI. Under the guidance of Master Kevin Dao, the ninjas spent hours and hours embracing the darkness and perfecting their techniques that involves defying the laws of gravity and manipulating the environment around them. While the training has been hard for them both physically and mentally, the ninjas have come a long way since then and are ready to change the stage in a blink of an eye. This year, their performance will be quite different from the previous years but the ninjas hope that they will be able to provide an entertaining experience for the audience.
