Huw Morgan

Hi I am Huw. I am a creative, driven, and cooperative product design engineer with 1 years’ worth of junior designer experience. I am a social issue designer and committed to contributing quality products that help people. I am a graduate of Middlesex University where I studied Product Design Engineering, BEng where I came out with a first class degree.

Experience and live projects

Skills During the year I worked on a set of exhibits for Alexandra Palaces learning zone, CRADL- a proof of concept/test rig to show how EIT can provide a new respiratory management tool for pre-term babies, as well as other shorter projects. My work on placement consist of CAD, Prototyping skills and detailed research for engineering and product design ideation.

While at university a company approached us as a studio to help them create a new casing for a server stack that could sit in a variety of office environments. Project consists of mainly ideation and concepts for the client. During my final year I helped SMASHFestUk in collaboration with science and technology council, Uk research and innovation, British science association, the national lottery, royal academy of engineering to develop another experience. The project consisted of body storming and video prototyping to show the client how the experience would function.

Industrial design

The part that really interests me with industrial design is background research and technology ideation. Taking a problem thoroughly researching it and then finding innovative new ways to solve it is what I love to do when I work on projects.

Experience and exhibit design

As a designer I have also dealt with a lot of experience and exhibit design. These skills I believe are very transferable to industrial design, they work within the same problem solving and ideation skill set as product ideation. Similar prototyping styles are used with in products when making UX and UI. Finally you use the same process of research before design to set the similar restrictions to yourself.

My passions

I do a lot of design projects outside of my jobs or university such as making my own plant pots for a self made Arduino powered irrigation system in case I forget to water my plants. I really love the endless capabilities of this career and I do use it every day just because it is design that allows life to be made more simple.

Stasis

A dual sensor cancer tracker

Stasis uses proven technology from two existing sources and creates a devices that is reliable and innovative to give patients an idea of when they should make emergency appointments and during those appointments gives the doctor health data from between check-ups. All it takes is a scan a week to build an accurate record of how your moles or skin lesions evolve.

Experimenting with thermistors

The validity of this project came from creating a proof of concept that demonstrated from monitoring variation in the speed of thermal recovery after the skin was rapidity cooled a device could prove that there was angiogenesis developing and thus could track new forming cancers. This is an example of someone of the resources and techniques I went through before finally getting to the final technical rig.

This was my state of the art in depth analysis looking at other medical products for inferences. I also believe it’s important to find other peoples’ opinions and insights so when I did this I tried to involve people with those different perspectives. “Medical products need to look, feel and work like a medical product to be taken seriously enough to be bought.”

One of the main insights was about making something project was creating a easy to use product. Creating early prototypes helped with the experience prototyping and body storming. This also gave me the information as to how I should train other people to use it. 11

Tocahive Universal office server stack The Brief. To develop a small computer stack that could be installed at a company’s office that helps automate jobs that contained information that fell under GDPR and wouldn’t be allowed on external servers for safety reasons.

Solo live project Time span- 3 weeks

15

Huw Morgan

After the initial briefing and questioning we broke down the clients needs and turned them into criteria in our designs. When we broke down these needs we split into groups. This allowed us to get multiple perspectives and have collaborative design.

17

Huw Morgan

I began the ideation with thumbnail sketches which I could quickly translate to illustrator sketches.

From these sketches I found simpler forms were easier when trying to fit their space envelope into the form, it also stuck closer to their brief and my criteria. 18

Huw Morgan

One of their main criteria was developing a way for the device to be cooled separate to the fans. This would mean the stack would be quieter as the fans work less. I took inspiration from heat syncs and using an increased surface area to create a higher conductive rate to the surrounding air. I also used heat conducting aluminium (aluminium 6060) as the main material to help.

19

Huw Morgan

The first presentation to client showed that they thought idea was not user friendly. They said the object looked like a cactus and because of that it did not make them want to put it in an office space. This gave me a new set of constraints where I needed to make it userfriendly and approachable. 20

Huw Morgan

These restraints lead me to my final design concept-

Methuselah A visual centre piece in any office that invites you to feel how hard its working. 21

Huw Morgan

Using haptic feedback you can put your hand on the case of Methuselah and feel a vibration that varies in size depending on how many cores and percentage of the CPU that is being used. It also has a glanceable interface that allows you to see if there is an error.

22

Huw Morgan

This final form used large “Knots in the other shell of wood to increase the surface area allowing for that same level of heat distribution. By using this you could reduce the amount the fans had to cool the machine overall making the whole server stack run quieter.

23

Huw Morgan

Finally the size of the computer stack made it so the internatl compnents sat one on top of the other, allowing for it to take up the smallest footprint on the floor.

This allows it ot be placed in a variety of office spaces without taking up a whole area of a room. 24

SMASHFest UK Ideals Community

SMASHfestUK is an organisation that works for equality, diversity and inclusion in STEM. To achieve this they set up interactive events around the UK to promote and engage BAME audiences. These events are for the community by the community.

Empowering & inspiring

The events and company have a set of ideals. They have an entertaining lead, a strong narrative plot, they are in and with the community, they are cross sector, intergenerational, they empower the community.

Unification

SMASHfestUK always has a mass disaster theme at the core of every event, this is to create unification. It puts everyone on the same mission and is a good reason to get excited as a child and it allows the adults to get involved as well.

Diamond light source For this project we worked in teams and with partners in industry. This meant finding their brand ideals and working within them. The main partner was Diamond Light source. A UK lab that has a particle accelerator. Smashfest UK was going to be having the main part of its project based there. 28

Huw Morgan

Basic 3D prototyping wouldn’t work with this brief so we body stormed and made video prototypes to test our games and better illustrate to the client what we were working on. These were all used as an assets to show the client to demonstrate our thought process at the final pitch.

29

Jump from room to room through the Baxter initiative

The Baxter initiative is the portal system of this experience, it allows the participants to enter into Diamond light source’s labs without being there.

This also gives the children the experience of meeting a Baxter without SMASHFest UK taking them round the country. 30

Huw Morgan

It was important to show how we invisioned the layouts of our games for the projects. We kept it basic and made it so all that was required was a television, a VR headset and a printer. One of the requirements of this task was to use as little as possible.
